No. 5 on Korea's Google Play weather chart with only about a thousand installs a day: a veteran weather studio's new skin

What it is A free, ad-supported weather app that adds a local news feed on top of forecasts, radar and alerts, and the news even sits ahead of the weather tab.

Why it took off Amber Weather, a veteran global-expansion studio, relaunched under a new package name, and in early October it ramped up across a dozen-plus countries at once (most likely paid user acquisition, though a sister calculator-lock app with 270M installs may also be cross-promoting it); Korea's weather chart has a low bar, so about a thousand installs a day is enough for 5st place.

CHow you could follow Don't build another generic weather app; what's worth borrowing is the "weather + local news feed" approach to raise ad revenue per user. Teams that already have a payback model for paid acquisition could try it inside their own utility apps, or build more local news + weather for older US users.

Grade C: the weather + news monetization idea is worth studying, but it relies on a decade of data, ad integrations, acquisition models and a sister-app traffic pool that a follower won't have. The weather category saw a pile of new skins at the same time, and the product itself has no differentiation, so copying it directly isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

In early October, "Live Weather - News," an app launched in August with a forgettable name you couldn't even find in search, suddenly jumped from one or two hundred installs a day to over a thousand, reached #6 on Google Play's Korea weather free chart by November 5, and was listed on weather charts in 14 countries at once. Behind it isn't a new team but Amber Weather, which has been making weather apps for ten years. This piece covers why it charted, where the money comes from, what you can take from it, and why I don't recommend copying it.

A five-star review

On Oct 7, a US user named Karen Koch gave it five stars on Google Play: "It doesn't just tell me the local weather, it has news too. I don't think I'll ever delete it." The next line is more telling: "I don't think there are too many ads either. I actually like looking at the ads. I'm of the older generation, and I often find things in them that interest me." 15 people marked it helpful, and the developer thanked her 6 days later.

That review pretty much sums up the business: a local weather plus local news app whose users are older, willing to scroll a feed, and don't mind ads. The app charges nothing and earns from ads.

What it is

A free, ad-supported weather app with no in-app purchases: hourly and 14-day forecasts, rain radar, severe weather alerts, plus a news feed. The first screenshot on the store page isn't weather, it's news, with the bold headline "Weather & Local News, All-in-one App," and on the phone is a story from Patch, a local news site in suburban New York: "Storm topples scaffolding, two workers injured." The bottom has three tabs, and news comes before weather.

The news is aggregated via RSS. The store description includes a dedicated disclaimer for news publishers: if we pulled in your site, it means we're using your RSS; if you don't want to be included, contact us to remove it, and if you want to be included, contact us too.

Who's behind it

The developer name on the store page is Smart Utils Dev Team, but the "About the developer" section lists Amber Mobile Limited, with an address in Central, Hong Kong, a phone number with a Beijing prefix (+86 185), and a website of amberweather.com (Google Play, 11-06). That's Amber Weather: Beijing Amber Chuangxiang's global-expansion weather brand launched in 2015, whose team traces back to Infolife, one of China's earliest companies to go global, and which owns a set of older weather plugins with millions of installs (Baidu Baike, Google Cloud customer case studies).

Two more apps sit under the same developer account: HideU, a calculator-lock app launched in 2021 with about 270M cumulative installs and still gaining 960k a week; and SafeBrowser, launched in May 2026 with 460k installs (Google Play, 11-06).

Amber co-founder Song Rui said two things in an interview with an overseas-expansion outlet that fit here: weather needs are "use it and leave, you shouldn't extend session time for commercial purposes"; and on product selection, "don't focus only on retention and frequency... acquisition might be cheap enough to recover ad spend quickly." The first line refers to the older products; this app uses a news feed to do exactly what it says shouldn't be done, extending session time. The second line describes exactly how this app makes its living.

How it took off

Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates): Sep 8 cumulative 714, Sep 29 3,825, Oct 5 7,444, Oct 13 16,788, Oct 27 32,191, Nov 6 41,731. The first five weeks were one or two hundred a day; in early October it jumped past a thousand a day, then settled between several hundred and three thousand a day. 7-day new installs: 9,540.

This is the shape of an acquisition tap being opened, not the shape of word of mouth spreading. Several clues point the same way:

  • Charting in 14 countries at once: 11-06 Korea #5, Japan 44, Argentina 44, Spain 49, US 50, Mexico 60, with South Africa, Hong Kong, Nigeria, UAE, Singapore, Brazil, Turkey and Germany between 68–130 (Google Play weather free chart). When several markets pop at once, it's usually because they were bought together.
  • No discussion at all: X shows only 30 posts searching "Live Weather - News" over the last ~0 days, and on the web it only appears on auto-generated listing pages.
  • Very few ratings: 158 ratings in total, averaging 4.4 stars, with five stars making up three-quarters.

So it's most likely bought user acquisition (inference, I haven't seen its ad creatives directly). Another possible source is cross-promotion within the family: on HideU's Korean store page, the "other apps by this developer" section shows its Korean name, 실시간 날씨 & 뉴스; whether the apps cross-promote inside the product is unverified.

"#5 in Korea" sounds less impressive than it is

Korea's weather free chart ranks by recent velocity, so the bar is low. On the same day, #1 Nice Weather gained 310k in a week, #4 Meteored has over 8,000 million cumulative installs, and Korea's official weather agency app gained only 5,045 in a week and still ranked #7 (Google Play, 11-06). An app getting about a thousand installs a day worldwide reaching #5 shows the chart is easy to climb, not that it has many users in Korea.

Its real users are more likely in the US: the screenshot city is New York, the news is US local news, and the visible reviews are in English (inference).

Where the money comes from

Only ads. No in-app purchases, no subscription. Weather is something you open for a glance and close, once or twice a day, which leaves little room for ads; add a local news feed, and users keep scrolling, with an ad slot on every screen. Older users like Karen Koch, who "like looking at the ads," are exactly the audience these feeds are worth the most to. The US's NewsBreak follows the same path of "local news + feed ads."

Revenue is not visible. At 40k installs, it can't be large (estimate). For Amber, the value of this app may lie less in what it earns by itself and more in using a new package name, ready-made weather data and ad integrations to test whether "weather + news" can push per-user ad revenue above what it costs to acquire a user.

The bad reviews also show where the product sits: one Oct 4 one-star review says "the radar is totally inadequate, it doesn't show rain where it's supposed to fall... zooming to street level is a joke, seriously false advertising, uninstalled". Another five-star review says "I've had this app on my phone for five years". The app has only been on the store for just over two months, so that user most likely mixed it up with a different weather app they had before. It's also possible the store listing was swapped (unverified).

Who it's competing with

At least 8–9 similar apps launched in the past 2026 years under "Live Weather / Daily Weather / Weather Alarm," and it's only one of them. Its growth ranks around #9 among new weather apps in the same period. This niche has no open spot, and it doesn't lead on any metric.

If it were you

Verdict: C. Worth learning from, but don't copy it. It works because of things you don't have: ten years of weather data and ad integrations, a payback-tested paid acquisition model, and a sibling app with 270M installs. The product itself gives users no reason to pick it.

Who it fits: Teams already running an ad-monetized utility app, with a paid acquisition payback model, who could test "weather page + local news feed" as a way to raise ad revenue per user inside their own weather or utility app.

Who it doesn't fit: Indie devs with no paid acquisition experience who are counting on organic store traffic. The weather charts are full of paid-acquisition utility apps, and ASO alone won't get you in. The Korean chart is easier to enter, but only because everyone is racing for it.

If you still want to build it, how: Don't build another generic weather app. The interesting part is the half shown in its screenshots: local news plus local weather for older US users. Pick one clear region or audience (a state, or an immigrant community with its own language), make the news source more local and cleaner than an RSS grab bag, keep weather as a supporting element, and monetize with an in-feed ad.

How to get users: Paid acquisition only. Start with a small budget in one country and check whether a user's ad revenue over 7 days covers the install cost. If it doesn't, stop. Don't count on scale to dilute the cost.

Window: No window. Weather is a year-round need, so there's no first-mover race. That also means there's no rush.

Signs you've misread it: ① It passes several hundred thousand installs before December and, after paid acquisition stops, daily installs don't fall back to one or two hundred. That would mean the news feed really drives organic retention and word of mouth, so the product has real substance. ② The same developer account launches another "weather + news" package, or Amber adds the news feed back to its older weather app. That would mean they've run the numbers and the approach pays back, so it's worth copying in your own utility app. ③ The opposite: if by December its chart positions have all dropped and updates have stopped, the test failed, and even a well-resourced team couldn't make this work.

Live Weather - News (com.best.liveweather.news): why it works

In short: this is a weather + RSS news package launched in 2026-08 by Amber Creative (琥珀创想, Amber Weather / Infolife family), a long-established Beijing-based team that goes global with utility apps. It sits under the same developer account as HideU Calculator Lock, which has 270M installs. Daily installs of about 1,000–1,400 are enough to reach #5 on Play's free weather chart in a low-barrier market like Korea. It works because of the team's resources and distribution (most likely paid acquisition, possibly on-platform cross-promotion), not the product. Its only differentiation is a news feed inside the weather page, which mainly adds ad slots rather than giving users a reason to come.

1. Basic data (source: googleplay library, 2026-11-06)

  • Developer: Smart Utils Dev Team. The developer website lists amberweather.com, contact phone +86 185 1890 7203 (Beijing number range), email [email protected] (Play store page). Store launch date listed as 2026-08-23.
  • Cumulative installs 41,731,7 days +9,540 (+23%), rating 158 reviews, 4.39 stars. Star distribution 1★13 / 2★0 / 3★8 / 4★10 / 5★119 (app_snap 2026-11-06). Ad-supported (ad_supported = True), no in-app purchases (offers_iap = False).
  • Version: 1.0.3(10-23) → 1.0.4(11-03).
  • Growth curve since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 09-08 714 → 09-29 3,825 → 10-05 7,444 → 10-13 16,788 → 10-27 32,191 → 11-05 41,731. The first 5 weeks saw only one or two hundred installs a day; in early October it jumped to about 1,000+ a day, then held steady at 600–3,000 a day. That's the shape of stable growth after a spend switch-on, not the exponential curve of organic virality.
  • Charts (chart_rank, tracked daily from 10-29 to 11-06): Korea weather free chart #15 → #5 (steadily climbing); US #37–52; Argentina #40–57; Japan #44–62; Spain #49–62; Mexico #55–69; South Africa, Hong Kong, UK, Nigeria, Singapore, UAE, Brazil, Turkey and Germany between #68–145. 15 storefronts charted at the same time, which points to a coordinated multi-country push rather than organic growth in any single market.
  • Neighbors on the Korea weather free chart the same day: #1 Nice Weather (9.15M installs, 7 days +310k), #4 Meteored (81.9M), #7 the official Korean Meteorological Administration app (7 days +5,045). This chart ranks by recent velocity and the bar is low. The app only does about a thousand installs a day worldwide and still reached #5, so "KR #5" sounds impressive but the volume is small.

2. Who's behind it: Amber Creative / Amber Mobile (the key evidence of resources)

  • Two more apps are in the library under the same developer account: HideU: Calculator Lock (launched 2021-05, 271,188,167 cumulative installs, 7 days +960k, #5 on the India utilities free chart) and SafeBrowser (launched 2026-05, 460k installs, 7 days +55k). All three apps list amberweather.com as the developer website (googleplay library, app table). AppMagic lists this publisher as headquartered in Hong Kong; AppBrain says "active since 2015, about 300M installs" (search result snippet, page not opened).
  • amberweather.com belongs to Amber Weather. Baidu Baike says it was launched by Beijing Amber Creative Technology Co., Ltd. 2015-08-10. The team traces back to INFOLIFE, one of China's earliest utility apps to go global. The older weather widget apps in the library under "Weather Widget Theme Dev Team" (mobi.infolife.*), with 700–9.8M installs, are theirs. Sources: baike.baidu.com/item/琥珀天气, enjoyglobal.net/detail/news/anshupo, cloud.google.com/customers/intl/zh-cn/amber-mobile.
  • The co-founder Song Rui's approach, described in an Enjoy go-global interview, matches this app:
    • "Weather needs are simple: you open it and leave. Don't stretch usage time for commercial reasons."
    • Early on they avoided paid acquisition. After the market matured, they moved to competing on "acquisition capability, product capability and monetization capability" together.
    • On product selection: "Don't focus only on retention and frequency... paid acquisition may be cheap enough to recover spend quickly."

Weather + news, free + ads, is exactly a category where paid acquisition is cheap and ad revenue pays it back.

  • Bottom line: this isn't a new team's new product. It's an established weather team's next variant under a new package name, with the data sources, ad monetization and acquisition capability already in place.

3. Competitors (all doing "weather + radar + alerts," many with news too)

Verdict: this category is already packed, and it doesn't lead on any dimension.

4. Growth tactics

  • Paid acquisition (likely, no direct evidence): 15 stores charting at once, jumping from a hundred or two a day in early October to over a thousand a day, then flattening out, with zero content or media discussion. That is the typical shape of Google App Campaigns / ad network scaling. Our googleads / metaads libraries only track products on our list, and this one isn't on it (adv_map returns nothing), so we can't confirm it.
  • Cross-promotion from a sister app (possible, unverified): under the same account, HideU has 270M installs and is still growing about 130k a day. Google Play's 'More by this developer' section also shows this app (the Korean HideU page surfaces 「실시간 날씨 & 뉴스」). Whether the apps cross-promote inside the product, I haven't checked.
  • Store search / ASO: the title uses the generic phrase 'Live Weather - News' and is localized (Korean 「실시간 날씨 & 뉴스」), so it picks up organic weather-related searches. Once it's in the top 5 on the KR chart, chart exposure brings in a bit more traffic on its own.
  • Content / creators / media: X (x-radar, last 30 days, both 'Live Weather - News' and HideU have 0 posts) and web search turned up no discussion at all. Searching the Korean 「실시간 날씨 & 뉴스」 returns only car voice-assistant copy, which has nothing to do with it. Confirmed: none.

5. Why it took off

  1. The team has resources: the Amber group has run weather tools for a decade, so data sources, ad monetization and acquisition models are ready to use; HideU, with 270M installs under the same account, can send traffic over, and the account's standing carries weight.
  2. Distribution through scaling: after the spend switched on in early October it added about 1,000+ a day, with 15 countries charting together. The growth curve looks like paid acquisition, not word of mouth.
  3. Low chart bar: Korea's Play weather Top Free ranks by install velocity. Even the official Korea Meteorological Administration app, at 7 days + 5,045, can rank #7, so a thousand-odd global installs a day is enough to reach the top 5. 「KR #5」 amplifies its visibility.
  4. The product is decent but unremarkable: 4.39 stars, 1★ at 8%, no notable wave of bad reviews, enough to retain the users it bought.

6. Differentiation

The only thing that could pass as differentiation is 'weather page + RSS news feed': the description specifically includes a disclaimer for news publishers and 'contact us if you want to be included'. Its real function is turning a weather app you open and close into a feed you can scroll, adding ad slots and extending session time. That's a monetization design, not a reason users come. AccuWeather and The Weather Channel have had 'weather news' for years, so it's not new. It didn't break out because of differentiation.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: few people know about it yet. Revenue isn't public, no media or X coverage exists, and it only appears on auto-generated chart pages from Appfigures / Similarweb.
  • Copycats: it's hard to say who copied whom. At least eight or nine "Live Weather / Daily Weather / Weather Alarm" clones launched in the same period in 2026, and it was itself one of the copycats.

8. What to borrow

  • The playbook of an established team: 'old category, new bundle ID, plus a news feed bolted on.' Cost is low, using ready-made data sources, ad SDKs and acquisition models.
  • Pushing for rank in low-bar storefronts (weather Top Free on Play in KR and JP), trading chart exposure for organic installs.
  • Weather is 'open and leave' demand, and adding a news feed is the standard way to lift per-user ad revenue (ARPU).
  • For outsiders, the real barrier to this opportunity is paid-acquisition payback capacity and traffic pools, not the product. Without those two, don't copy it.

9. Uncertain

  • Whether it runs ads, on which channels, or how much it spends, there's no direct evidence (it's not on our ad library list).
  • Whether HideU sends it traffic inside the app: not verified.
  • Revenue: ads only, scale can't be estimated. Given the 40k install base, it's not large.
  • The 08-23 launch date may have been reset when the listing was updated. With no review sample, retention can't be judged.
