IELTSMate: IELTS Speaking Prep · Boiskhon

# A Vietnamese student searched for an IELTS website and installed this instead: an AI IELTS app built by one person, 40k installs in 3 months from a name collision

**What it is** An AI test-prep app for IELTS only: four skills, it first measures your band with a short test, then schedules 15 minutes a day based on your exam date; speaking has an examiner voice, writing gets scored against the official criteria in one minute, explanations available in Vietnamese, billed monthly by subscription.

**Why it took off** A free Vietnamese IELTS website with the same name has been recommended on TikTok since July; the website itself has no app. When Vietnamese users search "ielts mate" on Google Play, this is the first result. It then caught that traffic with a Vietnamese store page, Vietnamese grading, and Vietnamese rating prompts.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy an AI IELTS app; instead take two small tactics from it: pick a country with high IELTS demand and few native-language resources (Central Asian countries other than Uzbekistan, South Asia) and build a fully native-language version, using store search to grow; and keep an eye out for local exam-prep websites that suddenly go viral without an app, since their brand name is traffic nobody else is claiming (watch out for trademark risk).

C grade: it got its traffic from one name collision, which later entrants can't get; AI-scored IELTS apps are already crowded, and its revenue is hard to see. The two lessons worth taking are "claim the brand keyword nobody has claimed" and "native-language localization for small languages"; copying the whole thing isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

IELTSMate is an AI IELTS app that an Uzbek-born engineer runs as a side project. It went live on Google Play in August, reached about 42k installs by Nov 6, and charted only in Vietnam. The product is decent, but most of its volume doesn't come from the product: a free Vietnamese IELTS website with the same name is being heavily recommended on TikTok, and that website has no app.

### One TikTok and one search box

These videos all push the website ieltsmate.vn. The website's FAQ never mentions an app at all. A Vietnamese student who watches a video and wants it on their phone opens Google Play and searches "ielts mate"; the first result, with a large card, is com.bois.ielts, the app this piece is about. It has no connection to that website.

The Play version of this app went live in Aug 7, and from mid-August it started getting a few hundred installs a day. The timing lines up.

### What it is

An AI test-prep app for IELTS only, with all four skills. Each skill starts with a few-minute quick test that gives a band range; you enter a target score and an exam date, and it spreads the weeks in between into a plan of roughly 15 minutes a day.

- Speaking: an examiner voice reads the questions and gives a band on fluency, vocabulary, and grammar, and corrects mistakes in your own words; one Part 2 cue card a day, with band 7 sample answers and audio; a full three-part speaking mock exam was added at the end of October.

- Writing: Task 1 and Task 2 are scored within a minute, graded separately on the four official criteria, followed by a sentence on "what you'd need to do to gain another half band".

- Reading has 168 lessons, graded by question type such as True/False/Not Given and heading matching; listening has 15 lessons, each one covering a single question trap; there are also 7 spaced-repetition vocabulary sets.

- Feedback can be chosen in Vietnamese, English, or Russian.

The first quick test per skill is free, after which it's an auto-renewing subscription at $7.99–$17.99 per tier (the in-app purchase range on the Play store page, 11-06); from Nov 1 the lowest tier went up from $3.99 to $7.99.

The developer is Boiskhon Bakhodirov. The Play developer address is in Menlo Park, California; a LinkedIn profile with the same name lists a Google software engineer of Uzbek origin. The iOS version is under a Kyrgyz company, listed first in June 26. The earliest reviews on the US iOS store are from Uzbek names, praising the design as "not looking like a 2005-year-old app", which looks like a cold start driven by personal networks (inference).

### What the numbers look like

| Date | Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|
| 8-15 | About 470 |
| 9-01 | About 10.5k |
| 10-01 | About 28.3k |
| 11-06 | 42,294 (last 7 days, +3,501) |

Install counts are third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy); the Play page shows the bracket "10k+". It grew fastest from mid-August to mid-September, at roughly 600–700 installs a day; afterward it settled at 300–500 a day. No single day in the whole curve is a spike, which doesn't look like concentrated paid acquisition or a video suddenly going viral; it looks more like people searching for it every day.

It has charted in only one place: the Vietnam Google Play Education free chart, first entering the top 100,10-29 in Oct 12, at #146,11-06 and then #80. On iOS, the most reviews come from the Uzbekistan store (32) and the Vietnam store (31); the US store has only 10 (iTunes, 11-06).

On Play it sits at 4.7 stars with 700 ratings, and the one- and two-star reviews are 0. Ratings are about 1.7% of installs, far above what education apps usually get. The Vietnam page's text reviews are just "good" and "Good", plus one bad review: "I didn't want to upgrade to Pro, it charged me by itself, I want to cancel and get a refund." (10-24)

### Where users come from

**Traffic from a same-name website is spilling into store search.** This is the best explanation, but it's only indirect evidence. Play's search-term source data isn't visible from outside. What points that way: the website keeps getting recommended on Vietnamese TikTok, it has no app of its own, searching the store for the brand name returns this app first, it only charts in Vietnam, and the launch timing lines up. It also doesn't look deliberate: the iOS version, June, was called IELTSMate before that Vietnam video wave, so it looks more like they got caught in the name collision and went with it (inference).

**It did see this traffic and went after it.** The Vietnam Play page is fully translated into Vietnamese, and the description has a section titled "GIẢI THÍCH BẰNG TIẾNG VIỆT" (explanations in Vietnamese). Writing and speaking feedback can be given in Vietnamese. Over two months the version went from 1.8.x to 2.2.4.

**They kept testing store keywords.** The first half of the name, "IELTSMate", never changed. The second half went from Reading & Listening to Reading Prep, then Prep & Essay, and now Speaking Prep. The description is packed with Band, Part 2 cue card, Task 1/Task 2, General Training, and long-tail terms like immigrating to Australia or Canada.

**Rating prompts.** Few low stars, almost no text reviews, and a high rating share. It looks like they show the in-app rating prompt right after users get their band score and are happy with it (inference). The high ratings in turn help it rank higher in the store.

**Nothing found.** No ads from it in the Meta ad library. No discussion on X, Reddit, Product Hunt, or in the media. Whether it runs Google App Campaigns can't be checked from outside.

### Who it's competing with: this category is already crowded

| Product | Where | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Mate(ieltsmate.vn) | Vietnamese website | One reading-practice article on the homepage, done by 53k people | Free practice and study rooms, no app, and automatic speaking scoring is still marked "coming soon". Same name, different owner, and it's the source of this app's traffic. |
| Prep | Vietnam-based, Android / web | Play 388k installs, +1,642 over the last 7 days | An established AI IELTS platform, large in size, but growing more slowly than this app lately |
| IELTS Exam Preparation App | Android, global | Play 347k installs, +3,473 over the last 7 days | Question bank plus courses; over the last 7 days its gains have matched this app's |
| IELTS Prep: English Band 9 | iOS | 382 ratings from Uzbekistan, 371 from Vietnam | Competes head-on in the same two markets, mostly a question bank |
| IELTS AI Tutor and others | Android | Play 12.7k installs | Also promotes AI scoring, but didn't take off |
| ELSA Speak, Praktika | Global | tens of millions | General speaking practice, doesn't score against IELTS criteria |
| ieltsmate.net, ieltsband.space, ieltsmates.com | Web | Not verified | More IELTS sites with the same or similar names |

(Install counts are for Google Play, 11-06.)

The product is genuinely good: it tests your level first and then builds a plan, scores against the four official criteria, and gives explanations in your native language. The free Vietnamese websites don't have any of that. But there are plenty of IELTS apps with AI scoring and study plans, and none of them grew like this in Vietnam. Product quality explains why people stay and why they get high scores after they arrive. It doesn't explain why this app, why Vietnam, or why it took off starting in August.

### Money

Revenue isn't public, and it has never appeared on any top-grossing chart. The only sign is the bad review about automatic charges, which shows some people did move from trial to subscription. Add the price increase in early November, and it looks like the developer is testing how to monetize. With 40k installs and Vietnam's spending power, revenue is probably not high (estimate, no public figures).

### If it were you

**The verdict:** Don't copy this app as it is. Its growth came from a name collision that you can't replicate, and the AI IELTS app category is already crowded. The parts worth learning are two smaller plays: first, store search terms where a brand exists but has no app; second, using native-language explanations to win IELTS markets where smaller languages are underserved.

**Who it suits:** Indie developers who can build solid AI scoring on their own, and who understand a country with high IELTS demand where there are many English apps but few native-language explanations (countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, or Nepal), ideally if they're from there.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone hoping to stand out with "AI IELTS scoring" as a feature alone, since that's no longer new. Also anyone counting on high prices, because these markets have limited spending power.

**How to do it:**

- Pick one country and localize both the feedback and the store page into its language. Don't make a generic global English version. Vietnam is already taken by this app, and Uzbekistan is its home market, so stay out of both.

- Follow its funnel: a free first test per subject that gives a band score, then an immediate push to subscribe, with the rating prompt shown at that same moment.

- Regularly watch the free IELTS prep sites that get promoted most on local TikTok, plus study communities, and check whether they have apps. If they don't, a brand name in the store with nothing behind it is traffic no one is serving. Using someone else's brand name carries trademark and misleading-marketing risk. It's a gray area, so weigh it yourself.

**How to get users:** Store search is the main channel. Keep a stable brand term in the name, and rotate high-volume keywords like Speaking, Writing, and Band in the subtitle. Pack the description with long-tail terms locals actually search for (study abroad, immigration, General Training). Partnering with prep creators on local TikTok who promote question-bank sites could work (inference).

**When the window closes:** Localization doesn't have a clear window. But whoever builds ratings and rankings in one country first will make it hard for later entrants. Name-collision traffic is one-off, and if you wait until others have built it up, it's too late.

**Signs you've misread it:** The localized store page has been live for a month or two and still can't get into local charts; or a local AI IELTS app already offers native-language explanations (like Prep in Vietnam); or the brand you're borrowing launches its own app, or you run into a store complaint. If any of these happen, stop investing more.

Where users come from

- Inference **Same-name website TikTok seeding → Play brand-name search spillover** : TikHub search for IELTSMate: accounts like @ielts.hacking have been promoting the website IELTS Mate since July, including one quote that reads "seeding web IELTS Mate"; ieltsmate.vn has no app; in Play's Vietnam search, "ielts mate" returns com.bois.ielts first; it only charts in Vietnam

- **Verified** **Store ASO keywords** : the subtitle changed from Reading Prep to Prep & Essay, then to Speaking Prep, and the description is packed with long-tail IELTS terms; the install curve is steady with no spikes

- **Verified** **Vietnamese localization** : writing feedback supports English, Russian, and Vietnamese; the Vietnam Play page is fully in Vietnamese

- Inference **In-app rating prompt / rating filtering** : among 722 ratings, one- and two-star reviews are 0, there are almost no text reviews, and the rating share of installs is about 1.7%

- Inference **Warm-network cold start (iOS)** : the earliest reviews on the US iOS store (6–July) all carry Uzbek names

- Inference **Paid ads** : not in the metaads library; no Google App Campaigns (UAC) data, unverified

## IELTSMate: IELTS Speaking Prep (com.bois.ielts), and why it took off

> Channel: Google Play (the same app also exists on iOS under id6779455084). Research date 2026-11-06. The bottom line: **This is a well-built solo AI IELTS app, but most of its Play traffic didn't come from the product itself. The most likely cause is a free Vietnamese IELTS website with the same name, "IELTS Mate" (ieltsmate.vn), which has been heavily promoted on TikTok since July of 2026. The website has no app, so Vietnamese users who search Play for "ielts mate" find this app first.** It also added Vietnamese feedback and localized the store page into Vietnamese to catch that traffic.

### 1. Basics

#### Rename history (ASO testing keywords)

The store name has changed several times: "IELTSMate: Reading & Listening" (AppBrain iOS page) → "IELTSMate: IELTS Reading Prep" (APKPure 1.8.5, Softonic, CNET) → "IELTSMate: IELTS Prep & Essay" (AppInsider still caches this name, New Zealand App Store) → now "IELTSMate: IELTS Speaking Prep". The brand word "IELTSMate" never changed; the subtitle keeps shifting from Reading to Essay to Speaking, testing which high-volume term sticks.

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **IELTS Mate(ieltsmate.vn)** | Web (Vietnam) | 2025–2026 (TikTok seeding from 2026-07) | The homepage single reading questions have been done by 53k people; Threads @ieltsmate_vn has 6.4K followers | 100% free, built around "practice together" study rooms and VOL/Actual Test question banks; **no App** . Speaking is recording-only, with auto-scoring "coming soon". Same name, different company, but for this App it's a traffic source, not a rival. |
| IELTSMate(ieltsmate.net) | Web (Chinese team, Alibaba Cloud Shenzhen OSS, yuan pricing) | About 2023 | People on r/IELTS discuss it going down, and there's an r/IELTSMate subreddit | Cambridge IELTS 4–19 computer-based mock question bank + membership; question-bank type, also same name |
| Prep(vn.prep) | Android / Web (Vietnam) | About 2021 | Play 388k installs, +1,642 over the last 7 days | A long-established Vietnamese AI IELTS/TOEIC platform with large scale, but its Play growth is now slower than IELTSMate's |
| IELTS Exam Preparation App(arturagapov) | Android | About 2024 | Play 347k installs, +3,473 over the last 7 days | A long-established question-bank plus course tool with global reach; IELTSMate's 7-day increase has already matched it |
| IELTS AI Tutor(SteadyLabs) | Android | Early 2026 | 12.7k on Play | Also focused on AI scoring, small volume |
| IELTS Prep: English Band 9(Inviral Tech) | iOS | 2023 | 382 ratings from Uzbekistan, 371 from Vietnam | Head-to-head on iOS in Uzbekistan / Vietnam |
| IELTS Speaking Assistant(Virtual Education OU) | iOS | 2016 | Uzbekistan 1,096 reviews, Education Top Free #39 | Only speaking question banks and sample answers, no scoring |
| IELTS by IDP / British Council | Official app from a major company | 2022 | IDP iOS, a hundred or two hundred reviews across each store | Official registration, score checks, free sample tests; no AI scoring or daily plans |
| JumpInto, YouPass, ai4ielts.com | Web / iOS (Vietnam) | — | Not verified | A "free practice website" pushed on Vietnamese TikTok alongside the IELTS Mate website |
| ELSA Speak / Praktika / Stimuler etc. | Android/iOS | 2016–2022 | Tens of millions of installs | General AI speaking practice that doesn't give band scores against the four IELTS criteria |
| smalltalk2.me, ieltsband.space (also called "IELTSMate – AI Speaking Companion"), ieltsmates.com | Web | — | Not verified | AI speaking mock-test websites; another name collision on top |

Verdict: **this category has no shortage of competitors, it's crowded** (AI-scored IELTS apps and websites are everywhere). IELTSMate's 7-day Play increase has already matched the largest IELTS-specific App by install base and beaten the local Vietnamese Prep, but this speed doesn't look like it came from winning on features.

### 3. Growth tactics: where users come from

#### Lookalike sites on Vietnamese TikTok: 3.1 brand-search spillover on Play (the main, strong indirect evidence)

- Searching TikTok for "IELTSMate", the first 20 results are almost all Vietnamese-language videos, mostly promoting the **website** IELTS Mate:
    - @ielts.hacking posted a string: "Các mom phải lên IELTS MATE làm VOL ngay" (07-30,3,409 views), "Cảm ơn IELTS Mate đã đồng hành cùng e trong 3 tháng hè" (09-26,4,377), "nguyện **seeding** web IELTS Mate suốt đời" (11-01, literally writing "seeding" themselves), "con web luyện 4 skills 100% FREE" (10-06), and more, posted continuously from late July to November;
    - @maccaigimakhonggioiielts: "Web là IELTS Mate nha" (10-03 2,164, 10-20 1,008); @hauhoctap: "3 trang web luyện đề… Jumpinto Youpass IELTSMate" (10-21,3,742); @reach7.0: "Web luyện speaking miễn phí" (10-27,20,601); the official account @ieltsmate.official links ieltsmate.vn in its bio;
    - English account @echoenglish17: "The best website I've found for Computer-Based IELTS practice" #IELTSMATE (07-21.2M views).

- The FAQ on ieltsmate.vn never mentions an App throughout; the product is a website (Jina read ieltsmate.vn/en/faq).

- **Searching "ielts mate" in the Play Vietnam store, the first result (with a large card) is com.bois.ielts** (Jina read play.google.com/store/search?q=ielts mate&hl=vi&gl=vn).

- The timing lines up: TikTok seeding volume started in late July; this App's Play version launched 8-07, and from mid-August it was getting several hundred installs a day. On Play it has only charted in Vietnam; its iOS Vietnam review count (31) is close to that of its "home" market Uzbekistan (32).

- It also actively catches the traffic: feedback supports Vietnamese, and the whole Play store page is localized into Vietnamese ("GIẢI THÍCH BẰNG TIẾNG VIỆT").

- **There is no direct evidence for this one** (we can't see the search-term source from the Play backend), so confirmed=false. It also can't be concluded that it was deliberate name-piggybacking: the iOS version was already called IELTSMate in June, before the Vietnamese TikTok volume rose, so it's more likely a name collision that it then picked up.

#### 3.2 store keywords / ASO (confirmed in use)

The subtitle keeps changing (Reading → Essay → Speaking), and the description is stuffed with long-tail terms like Band, Part 2 cue card, Task 1/Task 2, General Training, Australian PR, and Canada Express Entry. The install curve is steady with no spikes, which fits how search-driven traffic looks.

#### 3.3 rating prompt / rating filter (strong indirect evidence)

Of the 722 ratings, one- and two-star reviews are 0, and there are almost no written reviews; the Vietnam page shows only things like "good" and "Good", plus one complaint about auto-charging: "I didn't want to upgrade to Pro, please refund." The rating count is about 1.7% of installs, much higher than a typical education App. It looks like an in-app rating prompt fires when the experience is good (e.g., right after a user gets a band score), possibly asking "do you like it?" first to filter responses. The 4.7–4.9 star average in turn helps store search ranking.

#### 3.4 warm-start from friends (iOS)

The earliest US iOS reviews (late June to early July) are all from Uzbek names, praising things like "the design doesn't look 2005 years old" and "the algorithm is the best", which looks like a cold start inside the developer's own circle.

#### 3.5 what I didn't find

- Meta ads: our metaads library has no advertiser record for this App (the library only tracks products on its list, so a miss doesn't mean they didn't advertise).

- X: x-radar found "IELTSMate" 0 times in the past 90 days.

- Reddit, Product Hunt, press coverage, TrustMRR: none found. The discussions on r/IELTSMate and r/IELTS are about ieltsmate.net, not this App.

- An Uzbek Telegram channel is probably another channel (IELTS is very popular in Uzbekistan, and the developers are Uzbek), but our Play library has no Uzbek store, so this is unverified.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **Borrowed traffic from the same-name website** : Vietnam's free IELTS website "IELTS Mate" has been seeded continuously on TikTok since late July, and it has no App itself. When Vietnamese users search the brand name on Play, this App comes up first. That's why it has only charted in Vietnam on Play, and AppInsider's first recorded chart entry is also Vietnam (10-12).

2. **The product isn't a shell** : 168 reading lessons, 15 listening trap lessons, 7 spaced-repetition vocab sets, essays scored on the four official criteria in one minute with a "what it takes to go up half a band" note, speaking with examiner voices, live captions, and band 7 sample answers with audio. A full three-part speaking mock was added at the end of October. Every subject's first test is free. Users come in for the brand name, find the thing works, stay, and leave ratings.

3. **Fast shipping, good localization** : in two months it went from 1.8.x to 2.2.4, adding General Training letter writing, Vietnamese and Russian feedback, account deletion, and a string of crash fixes. The Vietnamese feedback and Vietnamese store listing show the developer saw the Vietnamese traffic and went after it on purpose.

4. **Rating management** : no low-star reviews, 4.7–4.9 stars, and the review count is climbing, which feeds back positively into Play search ranking.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- Compared with free Vietnamese IELTS websites (IELTS Mate, YouPass, JumpInto), it's a **native app** with **AI speaking scoring** (those sites still say "coming soon"), a 15-minute daily plan, and native-language feedback.

- Compared with global question-bank IELTS apps (arturagapov, Inviral), it's **test first, then plan against your exam date** . Scoring is aligned to the official four criteria, with advice on how to improve. Overall it's an "AI examiner + personal coach plan" approach.

- Compared with general-purpose AI speaking apps (ELSA, Praktika), it only does IELTS and scores against IELTS criteria.

- **These differences are real, but they aren't the main reason it took off.** Plenty of IELTS apps have AI scoring plus a plan (IELTS AI Tutor, IELTS Mentor AI, Prep and others), and none of them grew like this in Vietnam. The best explanation for "why this one, why Vietnam, why from August" is that the brand name collided with a website being promoted heavily on Vietnamese TikTok that had no app of its own. The product determines whether the traffic it catches sticks around and turns into good reviews.

### 6. How visible it is

- Revenue isn't public, there's no Top Grossing rank, no media or X accounts have covered it, and it hasn't launched on Product Hunt.

- Only data aggregators like AppInsider, AppBrain, and APKPure index it.

- Bottom line: **hardly anyone knows about it yet** .

### 7. What others can learn

- **Look for "brand with no app" gaps** : when a web product or community brand is heavily promoted on TikTok but has no app with the same name in the store, brand-name searches in the store are traffic nobody is catching (watch trademark and misleading-claim risk; this is a gray area).

- **Localize for big small-language IELTS markets** : in countries like Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, where IELTS demand is high, English-only apps dominate and local-language feedback is scarce, adding native-language feedback can capture local search.

- **"Free first test to get a band score, then use a plan to sell the subscription"** : the first test per subject is free; right after the user gets a score, push the subscription, and show the rating prompt at the same moment.

- A Google engineer building on the side got to 40k installs in three months, which suggests the barrier in this category is distribution, not technology.

### 8. Still unclear

- Play search-term sources aren't available, so "brand-term spillover" is an inference: strong indirect evidence, no direct evidence.

- We don't know what share of Play installs come from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, or Russian-speaking regions, because our Play data doesn't cover those storefronts.

- Revenue is unknown: there's no Top Grossing rank, and the only evidence of paying users is one complaint about "auto-charging", which likely means trials converting to subscriptions.

- We don't know whether it runs Google App Campaigns (UAC); we have no data on that.

- Starting at 11-05, a batch of 65 three-star ratings suddenly appeared that doesn't match the previous days' distribution, possibly a data glitch on Google's side.

- If the operator of ieltsmate.vn launches its own app, or complains about this same-named app, its traffic could dry up.
