Boomio - AI Movie Templates · EASTERLY TECHNOLOGY LIMITED

"No free trial, straight to payment": Boomio, an AI movie-template app, is a sample of a Beijing team copying its own playbook

What it is Upload a photo, apply a movie-style template, and AI generates a short video or image, billed as a weekly or annual subscription.

Why it took off The same team behind RevMod, which had 336k installs, renamed and repositioned the old shell, ran steady paid acquisition daily from mid-October, and placed it in the less competitive "Utilities" category, so it quickly hit Top Grossing in mid-sized markets like Italy, Brazil, and Thailand.

CHow you could follow it Don't copy the movie-template category, which is already packed. Learn its process instead: pick an open, single-purpose AI visual scenario, test store copy cheaply, scale paid acquisition in mid-sized markets once it works, and add the free trial it lacks.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and replicable, but the photo-to-video space it sits in is already saturated by PixVerse, Kling, and dozens of new clones each week, with some rivals in the same month up to fifty times its size. The process is worth learning; directly following it isn't worth the cost. Few people know about it

Boomio is an AI app on Google Play that turns a single photo into a short video using a movie template. It launched in July and barely got any installs for three months, then in mid-October it suddenly started pulling in two or three thousand people a day. In one month it went from 2,400 to 37.6k installs and charted in the Tools top grossing lists in 7 countries, including Italy, Brazil and Thailand. The product itself has nothing new. What's worth watching is the team behind it: how they took a dormant shell, changed its name, put budget behind it, and squeezed into the top paid charts. Anyone thinking about this category should also see clearly that it is already very crowded.

Three one-star reviews

On Nov 2, a user named Dovud Rakhimov left a review on Boomio's Google Play page: "No free trial, you'll regret buying it 100%. Video quality is far from okay, and it doesn't support photos taken on iPhone." The next day, Adam Demetriou wrote: "No trial at all, zero credits to start, asking you to pay before you've seen any result. Feels like a scam." On Nov 4, Izwan from Malaysia said he subscribed to the weekly plan but the credits never showed up in his account, and logging back in gave a "network error."

These three reviews spell out Boomio's business clearly: users are brought in by ads, hit a paywall as soon as they open the app, pay for a weekly subscription that converts to credits, and spend those credits generating videos. The Uzbek and Malaysian names line up with the countries where it charted.

The rating history is more telling. By Nov 3 it had 245 ratings with not a single one- to three-star review, all four and five stars, averaging 4.8. Then on Nov 4, 44 one-star reviews appeared at once and the average dropped to 4.17 (Google Play star distribution, 11-03, 11-04). An app with 245 ratings and no negative reviews at all is rare when it grows organically. The early positive reviews were most likely solicited (inference); real user feedback only started coming in once the volume went up.

What it is and how it charges

The store page now calls it "Boomio - AI Movie Templates," with the one-line description "Explore AI movie templates and create cinematic videos." It lists three features: movie-style templates ("add your photo and step into the story"), text or image to video, and AI image generation. Subscriptions come in weekly and yearly tiers, and in-app purchases run from $3.99 to $49.99 per item (Google Play store page, 11-06). The iOS version in the Spanish store is €8.99 per week or €34.99 per year.

The app didn't always have this name. On iOS it was still called "Boomio-AI Photo & Video Maker," and the featured slot on the Play developer page still showed the old name. The official site, boomioapp.com, is older still and reads "Create Your Digital Self," selling AI avatars, hairstyle trials, AI dance and tattoos. So the same shell has tried three different pitches, and the store ended up with "movie templates." I couldn't find the exact date of the rename.

Why it took off in mid-October

According to third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy), Boomio's cumulative installs were 22 in Aug 1,984 and 14 on Oct 2,447, adding only a few hundred over those two months. Then from Oct 21 to 9,022 and from Oct 26 to 21,162 it jumped, after which it steadily added 1.4k to 4k a day. From Nov 6 to 37,559 it added about 7k over 16 days (Google Play install counts, 11-06; Play refreshes its numbers every other day, which is why some days look like 0).

Two details stand out:

  • No new version shipped when it started picking up. The 1.1.6 version was last updated Sep 24, and the next one, 1.1.8, didn't come out until Oct 29. So the surge wasn't driven by a product update.
  • The curve is flat with no spikes. The number of daily installs stayed about the same, unlike a single video going viral. It looks more like a fixed daily ad spend.

There's also no organic buzz off-platform. Searching "boomio" on TikTok turns up a French rapper and a blind box shop. On X, there's not a single post about the app in the last 30 days. Meta's ad library has no page for it. The TikTok ad library (which only covers ads targeting Europe) has nothing. The Google ad library's match for the same name is most likely a different company. None of the three ad libraries confirms anything, but "growth starting with no release, a steady daily volume, and simultaneous entry into a dozen mid-sized markets' paid charts" is the typical pattern of paid acquisition on Android. The channel is most likely Google App Campaigns or an ad network (inference, fairly confident).

Who's behind it: a team with a proven playbook

The developer is EASTERLY TECHNOLOGY LIMITED, a Hong Kong entity with 4 apps on Play. Its flagship is RevMod AI-Car Tuning & Design, where you upload a photo of a car and AI customizes it and changes the color. It launched in April 2026 and now has 336k installs and 13k ratings, with in-app purchases from $2.99 to $119.99. On the App Store, RevMod is sold by Beijing Tiger Creative Technology Co., Ltd, which also makes apps for pets, AI portraits and antique appraisal. In October it launched a treasure appraisal app called "Qu Jian Bao" in the China iOS store.

So this is a Beijing team operating through a Hong Kong entity, running a portfolio of "single-function AI visual tools + weekly subscription" apps. Once RevMod worked, they moved the same playbook into adjacent use cases: pick a visually striking feature that users will pay for, list it cheaply to test the name, and when a test converts, add budget and target markets with low bids and existing subscription habits, such as Italy, Brazil, Mexico and Southeast Asia. Boomio is the newest member of that portfolio. Its iOS version dropped off all charts from the start in October, so the team seems to have put its effort into Android.

The money is real

On Nov 6, Boomio charted in the Google Play Tools top grossing list in 7 countries: Italy 46, Thailand 64, Malaysia 71, Brazil 83, Argentina 98, Mexico 98 and Turkey 154. When it first appeared on the chart on Oct 29, it was ranked 176 in Brazil and 125 in Mexico, and climbed steadily over the following week. AppWinners also logged it that day at 56 in Colombia and 63 in Chile, and at 83 on the overall top grossing chart across all apps in Uzbekistan.

Getting onto the charts this fast is partly thanks to the category choice. The Tools top grossing list is mostly VPNs, antivirus and cleaners, with few AI video apps, so an app doesn't need much revenue to get seen. On the Italian chart it was the only AI video generation app. In the Photography or Entertainment categories, the same revenue probably wouldn't have made the list (inference).

Who it's competing with

"Turn a photo into a video with a template" has been one of the most crowded niches on Google Play from 2025 to 2026. Boomio is small within it:

AppLaunchedScale (Google Play installs, 11-06)How Boomio compares
PixVerse2024-0979.6M, 7 days +520kCustom models, with template effects as the selling point
Kling AI (Kuaishou)2025-0134.8M, 7 days +750kThe model makers' own apps; shells like Boomio most likely call their APIs (inference)
Hailuo AI(MiniMax)2025-0127.8MSame as above
Nexus - AI Video Generator2026-0312.4M, +1.85M in 7 daysSame template-shell model, but ad spend two orders of magnitude larger
Beyo: Cinematic AI Video2026-022.95MClaimed the "cinematic AI video" positioning first
Mervious / Miuci AI2026-071.93M / 1.46MLaunched the same month as Boomio and already at the million-install level
DanceHit: AI Dance Generator2026-07410kOnly does an AI dance template, directly overlapping Boomio's old website pitch
FilmForge / Filmlet2026-0974k / 53kPhoto-to-cinematic-video, similar scale to Boomio, also run as a portfolio of small apps
CineDream, HoneyDrip, Afterglow and others2026-08 to 1020k to 130k eachShells built on a shared set of generic templates plus weekly subscriptions, also charting in India, Indonesia, Thailand and Italy

"Movie template" is a phrase Beyo, CineDream and FilmForge all use, and the underlying tech is most likely third-party video models. Boomio doesn't have a clear edge in features, quality or price. It got where it is because the team knows how to buy installs and reuse its playbook, not because its product is better.

If it were you

Verdict: The app itself isn't worth copying. The photo-to-template-video category is already saturated by PixVerse, Kling and dozens of new shells every week, and some same-month launches are already 50 times Boomio's size. What's worth learning is the team's playbook, not the category.

Who it suits: small teams that already run one or two subscription apps, have spent on Google App Campaigns, and can calculate the acquisition cost and payback period per subscriber. What you need is the ability to turn "swap the visual scenario and run it again" into a repeatable pipeline.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who has never run paid ads and is counting on TikTok organic reach or store search. This category has no organic content buzz at all; everything is bought, and people who can't do the math will just lose money. It's also a bad fit for anyone who wants to build a better AI video model, since you can't compete with Kuaishou or MiniMax on models.

How to do it: Stop making "AI movie templates." Follow this team's approach and pick a single visual scenario that isn't saturated yet, like RevMod's "photograph your car, room, pet or yard and let AI redesign it," where users understand the value instantly and will pay for the result. List it cheaply first and test two or three names and one-line descriptions on the store page, then add budget to whichever converts. Pick a less competitive category (such as Tools) so you can actually get onto its top grossing chart. Then fix what Boomio got wrong: give one free generation before the paywall, make credits show up instantly after subscribing, and support iPhone photos (HEIC). The three one-star reviews are about exactly these three things.

How to acquire users: Google App Campaigns, plus ad networks, starting in low-bid markets with a subscription habit like Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand and Malaysia, and skipping the US. Use before-and-after creative showing "this photo → this video."

When to move: Video model API prices are still falling, so the barrier to building a shell keeps dropping. Each new scenario goes from validated to saturated in just a few months (this Boomio category has been full since early 2025), so once you pick a scenario, you need to start buying within one or two months.

What would mean you got it wrong: ① Boomio stops growing after November and drops off the top grossing charts, which would mean even a team with a proven playbook can't make money at this price point. ② Google Play tightens rules on paywalls shown without a trial, or requires AI subscription apps to offer a free experience first, which would break this "pay at the door" conversion. ③ When you search Play for your chosen vertical, you find three or more look-alikes with 100k+ installs already spending on ads, which means that spot is taken too.

Boomio - AI Movie Templates (com.boomio.boom.android): why it took off

Channel: Google Play; developer EASTERLY TECHNOLOGY LIMITED; category TOOLS; store debut 2026-07-09; research day 2026-11-06.

One line

This is an AI app that turns a photo into a "cinematic" short video or image using templates (weekly/annual subscriptions, in-app purchases $3.99–$49.99). There is nothing new in the product. It took off because a Beijing team running an AI app portfolio (Hong Kong entity EASTERLY) repositioned a shell that had sat idle for three months as "AI movie templates", and installs have grown steadily since mid-October. Most of the volume is most likely bought, but that is unverified. It sits in the TOOLS category, which makes it easy to spot on TOOLS top-grossing charts in several mid-tier markets. Compared with similar apps launched around the same time, its scale is small.

1. Data: how it took off

  • Nearly flat for three months after launch. Cumulative installs estimated by AppstoreSpy: 08-22 was 1,984,10-14, then 2,447, with single digits to a few dozen per day in between (googleplay library app_day_ext).
  • Installs jumped in the third week of October: 10-21 to 9,022,10-26 to 21,162. After that, roughly +1.4k to +4k per day: 11-01 was 27,953,11-03, 33,901,11-06 was 37,559 (googleplay library app_day; on days with 0 gains, Google refreshed the numbers a day late). Over the last 7 days: +16,391 (app_profile.installs_gain_7d, 11-06).
  • The curve is flat, with no spikes. Daily volume is roughly constant, which looks like a fixed budget being spent, not content going viral.
  • No new version was released when installs started climbing. The updated_at dates for version 1.1.6 are 2026-09-24,1.1.8 and 10-29 (app_snap). So the rise was not driven by a product update. It looks more like paid acquisition or a change to the store listing (the rename is covered below).
  • Paid signals: 11-06 entered the TOOLS top-grossing chart in 7 countries: Italy 46, Thailand 64, Malaysia 71, Brazil 83, Argentina 98, Mexico 98, Turkey 154 (chart_rank). It first appeared on our charts on 10-29, ranking in Brazil 176 and Mexico 125, and climbed steadily over the following week. AppWinners recorded it the same day in Colombia 56 and Chile 63, and in Uzbekistan's overall top grossing chart 83 (https://appwinners.eu/app/android/com.boomio.boom.android/boomio-ai-movie-templates). AppInsider recorded it first appearing on Android charts 10-21, then expanding into new countries 10-22 and 10-23, and entering Brazil 10-23 (https://appinsider.io/apps/boomio-ai-photo-video-maker-6789019545).
  • Rating is slipping: from 10-29 to 11-03 on 4.8,11-04, it has since settled at 4.17–4.29 (app_snap.score). The early high scores may have come from early or incentivized reviews, and as real users arrived in volume the ratings started pulling the average down. The total rating count is 301, about 0.8% of installs, which is normal.

2. Who made it

  • EASTERLY TECHNOLOGY LIMITED has 4 apps on Play (AppBrain). The main one is RevMod AI-Car Tuning & Design: 2026-04-23 on the store, 336,381 installs, 13,653 ratings, in-app purchases $2.99–$119.99 (googleplay library). On iOS, RevMod's seller is Beijing Tiger Creative Technology Co., Ltd (appstore library; apps.apple.com/sn/developer/beijing-tiger-creative-technolog…), which also publishes PetFun, Woola-AI and others. Other products: InstaAntique antique appraisal (Play), 趣鉴宝 (China App Store, 2026-10-05 listed), PopDance (reelsup.app, same entity).
  • Conclusion: this is a Beijing team running an app portfolio through a Hong Kong entity, built around "single-feature AI + subscription". Boomio is a new addition to the portfolio, and the playbook copies RevMod: pick a visually striking use case people will pay for, sell weekly subscriptions, and buy traffic in mid-tier markets.
  • Boomio is on iOS too (id6789019545, still under the old name "Boomio-AI Photo & Video Maker", weekly subscription €8.99 and annual subscription €34.99 in the Spanish store). AppInsider logged it as 10-05 on iOS "dropping off every chart," which suggests iOS never took off and the team put its effort into Android.

3. The positioning changed: from "photo-to-video generation" to "AI movie templates"

  • The old name was "Boomio-AI Photo & Video Maker". The iOS listing, old AppBrain links, and the "more apps" recommendation slot on the Play developer page still carry that name. On Play it is now "Boomio - AI Movie Templates", with the one-line description "Explore AI movie templates and create cinematic videos".
  • The official site, boomioapp.com, still uses the earlier positioning: "Create Your Digital Self", with selling points of AI avatars, hairstyle try-ons, AI dance, and tattoos. That doesn't match the store's "movie templates" angle, which suggests the store copy is being used for ASO and positioning tests while the website hasn't been updated to match.
  • The exact date of the rename is unverified. Given that installs picked up after 10-14 without a version change, the rename and description update were probably done at the same time as the paid acquisition push.

4. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing

"Turn a single photo into a video with AI templates" has been one of the most crowded categories on Play since 2025–2026.

CompetitorsPlatformLaunchedScale (googleplay library, 11-06)How Boomio differs

Web: Higgsfield, LTX Studio, invideo's trailer generatorWeb2024–2025Not verified"Movie trailer" tools aimed at creators, not templates for everyday users

Conclusion: there are many competitors, and most are bigger. Boomio has no clear advantage in features, models, or pricing.

5. Growth tactics: where users come from

  • Paid acquisition (inferred, strong): daily volume is steady rather than spiky; installs surged with no new version; and it hit the top grossing charts in IT/BR/MX/TH/MY/CO/CL/AR/TR/UZ, mid-tier markets with cheaper traffic, all at once. These are typical traits of an Android app being bought through ads, most likely via Google App Campaigns or ad networks. The evidence is indirect:
    • Meta Ad Library (metaads): no Boomio Page and no ads pointing to this package name. However, this library only covers advertisers that appear in keyword search top results, so finding nothing doesn't prove there was no spend.
    • TikTok Ad Library (tiktokads, covers European advertisers only): mapped, status no_ads.
    • Google Ads Library (googleads): matched to an advertiser named "Easterly Pty Ltd" with mid confidence. Its first creative appeared on 2024-04, well before the app launched, and it ran 0 ads within 7 days. It's most likely a different company with the same name, so this isn't evidence.
  • Organic TikTok / X content: TikHub searches for "boomio" return only unrelated results, such as the French rapper boomiofficiel and the blind-box shop boomi.la. None relate to this app. x-radar shows 0 posts in the last 30 days. No sign of organic content or creator-driven growth.
  • Store search / ASO: renamed to "AI Movie Templates" to target search terms like "AI movie" and "movie templates". Placed in TOOLS rather than the more crowded PHOTOGRAPHY, ENTERTAINMENT, or ART_AND_DESIGN. The size of the effect is not quantified.
  • Migration of existing users / cross-promotion: RevMod, from the same developer, has 336k users. Whether there is cross-promotion has not been verified.
  • Media / celebrities: none found.

6. Why it took off (and how far it has actually gotten)

  1. The team had a proven playbook and budget: RevMod already validated "single-feature AI visuals + weekly subscription + mid-tier market ads", and Boomio copies it.
  2. Repositioned and funded in mid-October: installs went from a few dozen a day to 2 thousand a day, and then 2–4 thousand a day, with a steady curve.
  3. The category already has paying users: users have already been taught by PixVerse, Kling, and many template apps to pay for turning a photo into a cinematic video. A new app with compelling creatives can charge weekly subscriptions right away, so it can reach TOOLS top-grossing charts in mid-tier markets as soon as the spend starts.
  4. Category arbitrage: the top of the TOOLS charts is dominated by VPN, antivirus, and cleaner apps, with few AI video apps. Modest revenue is enough to get it noticed (on the Italian chart, where it ranked 46, it was the only AI video generation app).
  5. But don't overrate it: 37.6k installs and +16k over 7 days is lower-to-mid tier for this category. Mervious and Miuci, both launched the same month, have already passed a million. The rating slide from 4.8 to 4.2–4.3 also shows the product isn't earning lasting goodwill.

7. Differentiation

  • On the surface, the differentiation is the "movie templates" angle (cinematic scenes, action sequences, blockbuster effects), plus the TOOLS category placement.
  • This isn't real differentiation: Beyo (Cinematic AI Video), CineDream, and FilmForge all use the same "cinematic" pitch, and the underlying tech is most likely calling third-party video models. It took off through ad spend and the team's ability to reuse a playbook, not through differentiation.

8. How many people have seen it

  • Revenue is not public, there is no press coverage, and nobody is discussing it on X or TikTok. Only auto-generated pages from AppBrain, APKPure, AppWinners, and AppInsider mention it. Very few people know about it yet.
  • But this space is already crowded, with new template shells launching every week. "Nobody knows about Boomio" doesn't mean "nobody is doing this".

9. What to borrow

  • Validate with one app (RevMod) that "single-feature AI visuals + weekly subscription + mid-tier market ads" pays back, then replicate in batches across adjacent visual use cases (movie templates, dance, antique appraisal).
  • Launch cheaply first and test positioning through the store name and description. Only add budget once a pitch converts.
  • Pick categories with weak competition and aim for that category's top charts (TOOLS is easier to chart in than PHOTOGRAPHY or ENTERTAINMENT).
  • For paid acquisition, favor low-CPM markets with a subscription-paying habit, such as Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, and avoid the US.

10. Still unclear

  • The specific ad channels and spend (none of Meta, TikTok, or Google Ads Library has been confirmed).
  • The exact date of the rename, and whether the rename or the install surge came first.
  • Which video model it runs on, and whether the per-generation cost and weekly subscription price cover acquisition cost, i.e. whether it pays back.
  • Retention and real conversion rates (chart rank shows revenue exists, not that it pays back).
  • Whether RevMod cross-promotes it.
