Turning weekend pickup football into FIFA cards: FUTTEAM, the Spanish brothers' app, one Reel drove 10K installs
What it is It turns your real goals and assists in amateur football into FIFA-style player cards whose stats go up as you play. You can also build clubs, set lineups, and play other teams with opponent-signed scores.
Why it took off The developer's Instagram video from 2025 October, "manage your amateur team like an Ultimate Team club", went viral. They caught those people with a web version first, then in 2026 August, when the app launched, they went back to the comments to bring people in. Building a team means recruiting teammates, and score confirmation needs opponents, so one person brings a whole team.
BHow you could follow it Take the "real-match-driven cards plus opponent-signed scores" model to Brazilian Portuguese pickup football, basketball or padel, sports not yet carded, use short video to build traction, then partner with venues and amateur leagues so the organizer pays.

A Spanish-language amateur football app that turns the games you play with friends on Sunday into Ultimate Team player cards, with stats that only go up through real matches confirmed by opponents. No ads, no media, just over 10K installs on Google Play, all from the developer's own viral video a year earlier. The hook is strong, but growth has slowed in the two-plus months since launch, and no payments have shown up yet. Below: how it got started, where it's stuck, and whether it's worth doing again in another country or with another sport.
A video asking "can you imagine it?"
In 2025 October 18, a small Spanish studio of two brothers called brodevs (developer name Mario Sanchez Colmenero) posted an Instagram Reel. The opening line of the caption was:
¿Te imaginas gestionar a tu equipo de fútbol amateur como si fuera un club del FIFA Ultimate Team? (Can you imagine managing your amateur football team like a club in FIFA Ultimate Team?)
It goes on: rate your friends, set lineups, log games, see who's really the weekend MVP, "stop using Excel", free at futteam.com. The video got 39.4k likes and 154 comments (Instagram, 11-06). Most comments were from Latin American users asking plain questions: "Is there a nine-a-side mode?" "Does it work on Apple?" "I can't find it on the Play Store" "I always thought being a pro player was a dream, now it feels possible, lol".
There was no app yet; a web version caught this wave. Ten months later, in 2026 August, the app launched on iOS and Android, and the developer went back to the old video's comments and replied one by one: "FUTTEAM is now on iPhone and Android, download it at futteam.com and start raising your card's stats with real matches."
What it actually is
The first line of the store page is "Tu carta de fútbol, con tus números de verdad" (Your football card, with your real numbers).
- A card that levels up: pick position, build and dominant foot; after each match is "verified", goals, assists, clean sheets and minutes move the attributes up or down. The card design borrows FUT's tiers (bronze, silver, gold, legend, icon), and the stats use the same RIT, TIR, PAS categories.
- A club: make your own crest and kit, invite teammates with a link, play anywhere from 2-a-side to 11-a-side, and drag cards to set the starting lineup. Teammates not signed up yet? Add a "ghost member" placeholder and swap in the real person when they join.
- Opponent-signed scores: two clubs play each other, one side reports the score, the other confirms, edits or disputes within 48 hours, and the organizer rules if time runs out. The store page puts it plainly: "Here, the data can't be faked."
- Seasons and leaderboards: seasons run from Aug 1 to Jul 31 of the following year, like a real league; at the end, cards are archived with their photos. There are also player and club rankings and challenges for points to redeem card skins, lineup backgrounds and +1 attribute boosts in the "monthly shop".
Revenue comes from subscriptions plus in-app purchases: the store page lists Player, Pro and Elite tiers, billed monthly or yearly, which unlock creation limits and card progression; Google Play lists in-app purchases at $1.79–$89.99. The website says "free to start, no ads".

Source: Google Play installs (9–October are third-party estimates). September was about 200 installs a day; in October it dropped to 50–130 a day, and the last 7 days added +651. No rating on Play yet. It only squeezed into Mexico's Sports Top Free, climbing from #10-29 to #176 and then to #11-06 (rank 98).
iOS is on Aug 21. 11-06 Spain has 13 ratings, all 5 stars; Mexico has 4 (4.25 stars). On the Sports Top Free chart, Mexico is #74, Venezuela 73, Chile 83, Spain 207. The only money-related signal is #43 on the Panama Sports Top Grossing chart. Panama's market is tiny, so that rank can be carried by a few subscriptions. Its TikTok bio says "+16k users"; the gap versus Play is likely older iOS and web users (inferred).
Where users come from: a year of daily posting
I found no paid acquisition: the install curve has no step-jump typical of paid ads. On X, searching "futteam" turned up 0 posts in the last 90 days, and no media has written about it. The traffic is almost all earned by the developer:
- A year of daily posts. brodevs 2026-08-31 broke down on TikTok: starting 2025-09-01, he posted one video a day, with 3,550 followers across all platforms at the time. Of 365 videos, 143 were programmer one-liners, and 222 were memes, App demos, FUTTEAM ads, and Pokémon pack openings. His best stretch was 2025 10–November, when several videos passed 100k views and he gained 1,000 followers a week. His own takeaway: "it's a lottery ticket."
- That Reel was the lottery ticket. The viral one happened to be about FUTTEAM. The comments turned into a waitlist, and after launch he went back to recall them.
- Web users migrating. The web version has been running since at least March 2025. The old site (classic.futteam.com) has closed sign-ups, and opening it pops up a prompt to download the App.
- Launch-day hook. On Aug 22, the day it hit the App Store, the copy read: "Download today and get an exclusive founder card and a level-up item."
- The product recruits on its own. Creating a club means inviting teammates, and matches need the opponent to sign off on the score, so one user brings in a whole team and each match brings in two. PXP Valdemoro, an amateur five-a-side club in Valdemoro, Madrid, announced on Instagram in Oct 22 that it had become a partner. It's small, but it's a way to pull people in from the pitch.
The problem: @brodevs's most-viewed video is a programmer meme ("who pushed .env to GitHub", 147k views), nothing to do with FUTTEAM. TikToks specifically about FUTTEAM usually get a few hundred to a few thousand views. The top one, "Sube de media tu carta" (raise your card's stats by half, Sep 14), got 23.8k. No hit has repeated, and growth has followed the same downward curve.
Who it's competing with
"Amateur football organization tools" is already a red ocean. The combination of "FUT cards + real matches + opponent sign-off" has no solid competitor yet in the Spanish-speaking market.
| Product | Where | Scale | How it differs from FUTTEAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| FC Card Creator and similar card generators | Android | 3.86M installs | Only makes card images; you type the numbers yourself |
| Appito | Brazil | Play 1.37M | Books pitches and games, with gamified rankings; it's a venue business |
| Chega+ | Brazil | 856k on Play | Pelada (pickup football) organizers: sign-ups, payments, team splits, no cards |
| Spond / TeamSnap / SportEasy | Europe and the US | Play 2.29M–6.11M | General team management, no gamification |
| IF7SPORTS | Spain | 97k on Play | Event Apps tied to a specific seven-a-side league |
| STATZO | UK | Single-digit iOS ratings | Also turns data into cards, but aimed at parents and coaches of youth players, in English |
| FutRank | Ecuador / Chile | iOS Sports Top Free 78 | Same period, same idea: organizing games, peer ratings, personal profiles, but no FUT card design and no sign-off of scores |
| FutBalance | Spain | Small | Anonymous peer ratings, automatic team splitting, MVP |
FutRank, FutBalance, and a futteam.app from Costa Rica with the same name but a different product have all appeared over the past year or two, independently. Can't tell who copied whom. It means several people thought of this idea at once, but nobody has scaled it.
Its weak spots
The hook is "fun, good to show off," not a must-have. WhatsApp groups can already handle organizing games, team splits, and collecting pitch fees, and Brazil's Chega+ does more. FUTTEAM's reason to record matches is "my card needs to level up," and that motivation may only last a few weekends. It depends on whether a team has one person who wants to log every match. Comments under the Reel already include "created a team, tapped save and nothing happened," "if you log out you can't get back into your own team," and "how do you set 90 or 89 for a teammate". The learning curve is not low. There's no outside evidence yet on retention or payment.
If it were you
Verdict: B. The opportunity: the hook fits in a single video, few people know it yet, and the large market is still empty. But it hasn't proven it can keep users or collect money. Growth rests entirely on whether content goes viral.
Who it suits: indie developers or two- or three-person small teams who can make short videos on their own and understand the amateur sports scene in some country, ideally because they play pickup football or amateur leagues themselves.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to start with paid acquisition (a group subscription at a few dollars a month can't pay for ads); people who can't make content; people who want steady subscription revenue.
How to do it:
- Switching countries: Brazil is the most worthwhile. Portuguese-speaking pelada has million-user markets like Chega+ and Appito, yet none have been turned into card games. Next are Argentina and Colombia, Spanish-speaking countries with strong football culture, many FUT players, and no serious FUTTEAM coverage yet. Build for local leagues and local slang.
- Switching sports: basketball, padel, pickleball, cricket (India, Pakistan). Carry "cards + opponent sign-off" over as is, and redesign the cards in the game style that players of each sport already know.
- Fix what it does poorly: the onboarding flow (create a team in a minute, one link to bring in the whole squad), match entry (after the game, one screenshot updates the card design, easy to share in group chats and on social media), and an organizer version built around a venue or league, where one person pays and the teams underneath use it for free.
How to get users: copy its playbook, but don't wait on luck. First, post a "can you imagine" comparison video (real footage of a match cut to card stats going up) and treat the comments as a waitlist. Then go offline and approach amateur leagues and five-a-side venues. One venue can bring in dozens of teams. Generate a shareable card image after every match so players spread it for you.
When to move: the window isn't urgent. FUTTEAM is slowing on its own, and nobody has covered it. But several similar products appearing at once shows plenty of people are thinking of the idea. Launch before the new summer season in 2027 (Aug 1), when local amateur leagues reform their teams and a new FC release can drive another wave of interest.
What would show you misjudged it: few teams still log scores a month after creating one; almost no one buys the subscription, not even the "admin pays for the whole team" option; or FUTTEAM is still doing only dozens of installs a day into early 2027 and hasn't charted on any Top Grossing list outside Panama. That would mean the card idea is good enough for one great video but not for a business.

- Verified through the developer's own Instagram/TikTok content (a viral Reel): brodevs's Instagram Reel "Can you imagine managing an amateur team like a FIFA Ultimate Team club" got 2025-10-18 39.4K likes and 154 comments, and at the time it drove traffic to the web version at futteam.com. After the app launched, the developer replied to comments one by one: "iPhone and Android are already up".
- Verified a year of daily posting, and the audience it built: brodevs 2026-08-31 TikTok says: 2025-09-01 on, one post a day, starting from 3,550 followers. Of 365 posts, some are programmer jokes, memes, Pokémon pack openings and FUTTEAM ads. From 10 to November, several posts hit 100k+ views, with 1,000 new followers a week. Now: 2,778 TikTok followers and 226k total likes. The top programmer-joke video got 147k views, but the best FUTTEAM-related TikTok only reached 24k views (futteam.app account: 2026-09-14)
- Verified Migration of web users: classic.futteam.com has closed sign-ups and shows a pop-up directing people to download the App. The futteam.app TikTok bio reads "+16k users" (more than the 10.6k on Play, so it likely includes web and iOS).
- Verified Early-bird incentives + invite-driven referrals within teams: on launch day, downloads got a "founder card + a +1 stat item." The product mechanics require inviting teammates and having the opposing club confirm the score, with "ghost members" holding spots until people join. FUTTEAM+ Club is paid by a single admin for up to 30 people.
- Verified Partnerships with local amateur clubs: PXP Valdemoro, an amateur five-a-side club in Valdemoro, Madrid, announced 2026-10-22 on Instagram that it had "become a FUTTEAM partner."
- Inferred paid acquisition: no paid-ad signals found. The official site says "no ads", and the install curve shows no ad-driven spikes. Ad libraries only track listed products, so this is unverified.

One line
A small two-person Spanish studio, brodevs (developer credited as Mario Sanchez Colmenero), built an amateur football app. It turns real goals, assists and clean sheets from weekend pickup, five-a-side and seven-a-side games into FIFA Ultimate Team-style player cards that level up. You can also build clubs, drag cards into lineups, and match scores need both clubs to confirm. There are MVPs, leaderboards, challenges and a monthly cosmetics shop. It makes money from FUTTEAM+ subscriptions (€1.99/month; the Club plan is paid by one admin and covers up to 30 members) plus in-app cosmetic purchases.
Verdict
It's still a small grower. Play shows 10.6k installs in total and roughly 100 per day now. Users came mainly from the developer's year of content, with a key driver being an Instagram Reel from 2025-10-18 that got 39.4k likes. The web version (futteam.com, now classic.futteam.com) caught that traffic first, 2026-08 before moving to iOS and Android. The whole process had no paid acquisition and no press coverage, and nobody discussed it on X. The differentiator (FUT cards driven by real matches) is exactly what that viral content showed, so it is indeed why it took off. But growth dropped sharply a few weeks after launch, and there is no evidence yet of retention or payments.
Data
- Play installs (AppstoreSpy estimates + googleplay library): 2,187 (09-07) → 3,784 (09-09) → 5,556 (09-18) → 7,061 (09-29) → 8,007 (10-06) → 8,983 (10-15) → 9,916 (10-29) → 10,567 (11-06). September averaged about 200 per day, mid-October about 50–130 per day, and the last 7 days added 651.
- Play charts: only charted on the Mexico Sports Top Free chart, climbing from #176 (10-29) to #98 (11-06). No ratings, and it never entered Top Grossing.
- iOS (appstore library / iTunes lookup): listed on 2026-08-21, version 1.2.0. 13 ratings in Spain (5.0), 4 in Mexico (4.25), and 1 in Chile. Sports Top Free: Mexico #74, Venezuela #73, Chile #83, Guatemala #111, Spain #207, Portugal #199. Panama Sports Top Grossing #43. This is the only revenue signal, and the Panama market is very small.
- In-app purchase range $1.79–$89.99. The official site says "free to start, no ads".
- The futteam.app TikTok bio says "+16k users", more than the 10.6k on Play. It likely includes iOS and older web users.
Where users come from
- Viral Reel (confirmed): brodevs posted a Reel on Instagram 2025-10-18: "Can you imagine managing your amateur team like a FIFA Ultimate Team club... rate your friends, set lineups, log games, see who's the real weekend MVP, free at futteam.com". It got 39.4K likes and 154 comments. Many comments came from Latin American users asking "is there 9-a-side" and "does it work on Apple". After the app launched, the developer went back through the comments replying one by one with "now on iPhone and Android, download at futteam.com", pulling the old traffic back in. (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DP9TwZmAimi/)
- One year of daily posting, now confirmed: brodevs 2026-08-31 reviewed it on TikTok. Starting 2025-09-01, he posted one video a day, with 3,550 followers across platforms at the start. Out of 365 videos, 143 were programmer quotes, 222 were memes, plus app videos, FUTTEAM ads, and Pokémon pack openings. The best stretch was 2025 10–November, when several videos passed 100k views and he gained 1,000 followers a week. His verdict: "it's a lottery." TikTok @brodevs now has 2,778 followers and 226k likes in total. His top-viewed video is a programmer joke ("who pushed .env to GitHub", 2026-08-03 147k views), unrelated to FUTTEAM. FUTTEAM's own videos usually get a few hundred to a few thousand views on TikTok. The best was @futteam.app's "Sube de media tu carta" at 2026-09-14 23.8k views.
- Web-version user migration (confirmed): classic.futteam.com has closed signups and a popup now guides users to download the app. 2025-03 already had a TikTok titled "Crea tu equipo de fútbol con FUTTEAM", which shows the web version ran for at least a year and a half.
- Launch cadence and early-bird hook (confirmed): Teasers began 2026-07-15 as "Agosto 2026" (6,008 plays). Countdown from 08-20, App Store launch on 08-22 with the copy "Download today for an exclusive founder card skin and a level-up item." At that point Android was still "date TBD." The Play launch date shows 08-16, and installs jumped in early September (averaging about 800 per day during 09-09). That likely lines up with the days Android went public (exact dates not verified).
- In-product referral (mechanism confirmed, effect not quantified): to create a club you invite teammates, and until they join, you fill spots with "ghost members". Scores require the opposing club to confirm within 48 hours, and the organizer decides if it times out. One user brings in a team, and one match brings in two teams.
- Local club partnership (confirmed, small scale): the amateur five-a-side club PXP Valdemoro 2026-10-22 in Valdemoro, Madrid, announced on Instagram that it is a FUTTEAM partner.
- Paid acquisition (not found): the install curve shows no ad-driven spikes, and the official site says no ads. Ad libraries only track listed products, so this is unverified.

| Squady | Android | 2026-06 | Play 3,068 | Team management tool |
Takeaway: "amateur football organizer tools" is a red ocean, and Brazil and Europe/US each have million-user products. The combo of "FUT card art + match-data-driven stats + club-vs-club play" has almost no established competitor in the Spanish-speaking market. FutRank, FutBalance and STATZO are all small products that appeared around the same time, and there's no clear sign of who copied whom.
Why it took off (to this extent)
- The hook fits in one video line: "your FIFA card, but the stats are from games you actually played". Spanish-speaking guys who grew up on FC/Ultimate Team need no explanation, and the 39.4k-like Reel proves it.
- Validated on web and content first, then app: the web version ran for 2025 years, viral traffic was first stored in the web app and comments, and when the app launched there was a ready-made audience to win back.
- A year of daily posting built content skill, a zero-cost distribution source. But FUTTEAM's own videos never went viral again, so growth decayed quickly after launch.
- The mechanics bring in new users: building a team requires inviting people, matches need the opponent to sign off on scores, and team subscriptions are paid by one person.
- Low bar for small Spanish-speaking country charts: Mexico, Venezuela, Guatemala and Panama's Sports category charts take a few dozen to a hundred installs a day to get onto, which is also why we could detect it.
Differentiation, and whether it's the real cause
Other products are either organizer tools or card generators that let users fill in numbers freely. FUTTEAM ties the emotional payoff of FUT (bronze/silver/gold tiers, legendary and icon cards, attributes that rise and fall after each match, season resets, limited-time monthly cosmetics) to "real matches confirmed by the opponent". That difference is the whole selling point of the viral content, which is why it is what made it take off. The catch is that it serves bragging and fun rather than a must-have need for organizing games: WhatsApp groups still work fine for setting up matches. After launch, daily installs fell from about 200 to under about 100, and there is still no evidence of retention or payments.
What to borrow
- Grafting familiar game mechanics (FUT cards, tiers, attributes) onto real-life data is a natural fit for short video.
- Test the web version and short-form content first, use the comments as a waitlist, and reply one by one to win users back at app launch.
- "Opponent confirmation" serves both anti-cheat and growth.
- Team subscriptions paid by one admin lower the payment barrier for small groups.
- Monthly limited-time cosmetics and holiday events (the Halloween "Noche" card art) keep the update cadence going.
- The same model could move to Brazil (Portuguese pelada), basketball, cricket, paddle/pickleball and other amateur sports. Brazil already has large players like Appito and Chega+, but none of them are card-based.
Visibility
Few people know about it yet. In the last 90 days, x-radar shows 0 results for "futteam". No media coverage or reviews, and revenue is not public. The only big traffic source was the developer's own Reel. Namesakes like Costa Rica's FutTeam and Chile's FutRank suggest several people in the Spanish-speaking world are building similar ideas at once, but all are still small.
Unknowns
- Play user country breakdown: the library only shows it charting in Mexico, and iOS ratings are mainly from Spain.
- Subscription revenue and conversion rate: the only weak signal is Panama iOS Top Grossing #43.
- Historical user count and retention for the web version.
- Whether the self-reported "2M views" video was related to FUTTEAM is unconfirmed.
- Android's actual public release date: Play lists the launch as 08-16, but the public messaging says Android came after iOS.
