ParaDoor: AI Interactive Story · ParaDoor

Three days after Character.AI's bankruptcy: how a zero-ad AI interactive story app caught the users who left

What it is An English-language AI interactive story app. You step into a story with visuals, voice acting, and several characters, drive the plot by talking, no ads, and you pay with credits.

Why it took off Character.AI started inserting ads, then filed for bankruptcy in October. A big wave of English-speaking roleplayers went looking for alternatives. ParaDoor had already lined up a batch of anime fan-art creators on TikTok, with single videos reaching up to 700k views. Add the "zero-ad backup" pitch and ads that directly compare it to c.ai, and it caught that crowd.

CHow you could follow Don't build yet another generic c.ai alternative. Pick a language or fan community nobody is serving properly, copy its approach of driving traffic through niche creators, make credits feel fairer than the competition, then wait for the leader's next blunder.

Grade C: the playbook is worth learning, but the niche is crowded. A dozen similar apps launched around the same time, several of them bigger, and its own differentiation is shallow. The c.ai bankruptcy window has already passed, so copying it now probably just makes you another late entrant. Few people know about it yet

ParaDoor is from a small Singapore company. It hit Google Play only at the end of July, and in just over three months it has passed 217k installs, climbing the entertainment Top Grossing charts in the US, UK, Canada and Australia week after week. It has no proprietary tech, and several bigger competitors launched alongside it. What it did right was two things: it found the people drawing fan art on TikTok, and it got into position right when Character.AI stumbled. Below: how it took off, where the money comes from, and whether you can follow it.

A video that said "I already had a backup"

On Oct 12, 2026, Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. CNN's report the next day said roughly 12M users were worried the characters they'd spent so long building might get deleted.

On Oct 15, a TikTok account @zuzulilo2 (69K followers) that makes Korean-manhwa-style fan art posted a video captioned:

No cause what do you mean they went bankrupt? Good thing ParaDoor is my backup 😭 try it out

("What, bankrupt? Good thing I already had ParaDoor as a backup.")

The day before, on Oct 14, another account with 86 followers posted: "C.ai filed for bankruptcy, and I'm sitting here totally calm because I upgraded long ago... sorry babe, we moved on. Try ParaDoor". Over the next three weeks, a wave of accounts with only 4 and 20 followers kept posting the same message: "cai might shut down, switch to something better" and "zero ads, and it's free".

These accounts look like a network of small accounts or incentivized UGC (inference). But one thing needs to be clear: the bankruptcy jokes themselves got very little reach. The @zuzulilo2 video at 10-15 followers got about 1,300 views, and the small accounts each got a few hundred to just over a thousand (TikTok, 11-06). The videos that actually drove traffic were a different kind, covered below.

What it is

ParaDoor's Play Store title is "AI Interactive Story", and it claims over 100k AI stories: fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural, historical drama. You step into the story and drive the plot by talking. Compared with one-on-one chat on Character.AI, it adds several things: visuals and voice acting, multiple characters in one story, "Cinema Mode", the ability to see a character's mood and "hidden thoughts", and a "snapshot" card generated from any scene. Models come in two tiers, Standard and the pricier Premier. The website lists "Zero ads" as its third selling point.

The terms of service name the entity as LIVEWORLD PTE. LTD. in Singapore, with the package name butterflylink. There's an iOS version under the same name, sold by an individual, SHAO CHIN YU. The team is most likely a Chinese-run overseas team (inference, unverified).

Why it's blowing up now

First, Character.AI pushed its own users away. This year c.ai inserted ads mid-conversation and in full-screen, and users complained for months (both piunikaweb in February and WeavAI in July reported it). Then it went bankrupt in October. For the first time, a large wave of English-speaking roleplayers went looking for alternatives. ParaDoor launched in July 28, so when c.ai collapsed it already had a finished product, and creators were already posting videos for it.

Second, it recruited people who draw fan art, not "AI review accounts". The videos that drove traffic almost all came from anime and webtoon fan-art creators: Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen, Bakugo and Midoriya from My Hero Academia, Naruto and Sasuke, plus female-oriented tropes like "childhood friends grown into enemies" and "your rival became your boss". @zuzulilo2's October 20 video, "your childhood friend grew up to be a mob boss, and it's up to you whether to let him go, on ParaDoor", got 706k views and 109k likes. Another October 28 video, "your rival became your new company's boss", got 180k views (TikTok, 11-06).

One detail stands out: the same account's non-ParaDoor work from the same period usually got only 2,000 to 18k views, while the three ParaDoor videos got 42k, 180k and 706k. The creator may have put more effort into the sponsored material, or the brand may have boosted the posts with paid spend (inference). Every one of these videos ends in much the same way: "Try it out on ParaDoor" or "Try it for yourself". Such uniformity is hard to get organically. It's most likely a paid partnership (inference, unverified).

Third, the ads go straight after the rival. A post on r/CAIRevolution on Reddit reads "Even paradoor ad is roasting character ai": the ad uses a slovenly man to stand for "generic AI chat" and sets it against itself. On Facebook, a page called "ParaDoor-02" is running video ads, and the numbered name suggests several ad pages running at once. The website's download button is wired to AppsFlyer attribution. How much was spent isn't visible from outside.

It also did two smaller things: it generates a searchable web page for every character and story users create (paradoor.ai/content/…), which picks up long-tail search, and it changed the Play title from "AI Character, Story" to "AI Interactive Story" to grab the phrase "interactive story".

Data from Google Play daily charts and install counts. 8 days added about 25.6k installs, roughly 3,200 a day. That's a bit faster than its average since launch (about 2,200 a day), but nowhere near a breakout. The more telling signal is the category: Top Free is flat, and in the UK it's slipped from #37 back to #70 after peaking at #11-02. Top Grossing keeps climbing. Downloads aren't growing much, but more people are paying.

Where the money comes from, and what users are angry about

Monetization runs on credits. In-app purchases on Play cost $0.99 to $99.99 per item. You get daily login credits, and new users get more in the first week. Unlocking a snapshot or a "character mood" costs credits separately.

The most-upvoted Play reviews all say the same thing:

"Started with plenty of credits, and within a week it's almost none, and they reset at the end of the day if you don't use them... other apps give free credits much more generously." (12,100 people found this helpful)
"Daily check-in gives 100 credits, and that's gone after 20 messages. Unlocking one snapshot or one mood eats a whole day's credits." (40 people found this helpful)
"Don't let new-user credits expire every day, and after the first week don't cut daily check-in down to 30... that alone put me off." (72 people found this helpful)

The official replies to every one of these are the same: do daily tasks, join community events, enter giveaways to earn more credits.

The monetization logic is clear: keep people with generous credits in week one, tighten the free allowance from week two, and let the heavy users who stay pay. Top Grossing climbing shows this works for some users. A rating of 4.3 and complaints concentrated on credits show others leave over it.

Who it's competing with

This is a crowded niche. In 2026 8–September alone there were a dozen-plus similar launches, and ParaDoor is mid-pack among them.

Dulci: AI Interactive Story219k, +92k in 7 daysLaunched Sep 18, nearly identical subtitle, has already caught up in installs, #38 on DE Top Grossing

Dulci is the one to watch: seven weeks later, with nearly identical positioning, its installs are close to ParaDoor's and its weekly gain is more than triple. I haven't seen anyone specifically copying ParaDoor. Everyone is doing the same thing at the same time.

How many people know about it

Very little. No press coverage, no public revenue, the official X account has 229 followers, and Reddit mentions are sporadic. Its buzz lives in TikTok anime fan circles, and builders mostly haven't noticed it. But few people knowing about it doesn't mean nobody is working this area: AI roleplay and interactive stories are among the most crowded consumer AI categories this year.

If it were you

Verdict: C. You can learn a very usable playbook here, but copying it to build another clone most likely makes you the fifteenth Dulci. The c.ai bankruptcy window closed three weeks ago, several same-window launches are already bigger than ParaDoor, and its differentiation is shallow.

Who it fits: a small team that already has a working AI chat or interactive story product and lacks distribution, or someone who knows a specific fandom and has relationships with artists in it.

Who it doesn't fit: anyone starting from scratch to build a "better c.ai", anyone without money for paid acquisition or creator deals, and anyone who thinks features (visuals, voice, snapshots) will win. Every competitor has those.

How to do it: don't build generic roleplay. Pick a niche that ParaDoor and the same-window products haven't seriously worked: a non-English language (most of these products are chasing English markets, zeta has Japan and Korea, Amora went to the Middle East), or a specific genre and community. Don't copy its credit system: the most-hated thing in reviews is "out of credits a week in, reset daily." Keeping the free allowance stable will retain more people than it does.

How to acquire users: follow its approach, but work with vertical fan artists, not AI review accounts. The format is "[a specific ship or trope character], in your app," with a fixed CTA at the end. Push the handful of videos that perform with paid spend. At the same time, watch the leaders: the day they raise prices, add ads, or tighten moderation, get the "backup app" pitch out within 72 hours. But ParaDoor's experience also shows that these trend-jacking hooks are only a side dish; the traffic still comes from the videos about the niche itself.

Deadline: there's no hard one. This c.ai wave has already passed. The next opening comes when a leading product next runs into trouble, so have the product and creators ready in advance.

Signs I got this wrong: (1) ParaDoor keeps climbing the US and UK Top Grossing charts into the top 30 while Top Free doesn't follow, which would mean heavy credit monetization can earn big money even in a crowded category, and following it is worth more than I'm estimating; (2) Dulci, Afizzy and the rest of this cohort fall off the charts within a month or two, which would mean the window closed and everyone is fighting over a shrinking pie, so even a C is too high; (3) Character.AI, after its acquisition, goes back to no ads, and users flow back to it.

Bottom line

An AI roleplay / interactive story app run by a Singapore entity (LIVEWORLD PTE. LTD.) going global. It has no proprietary technology. It took off on three things: first, it caught two rounds of Character.AI's bleeding, starting with full-screen ads in 2026 April that angered users, then Character.AI filing for Chapter 12 bankruptcy in 11 October; second, it sold "zero ads, the c.ai backup" as its core promise; third, it seeded TikTok with a set of anime fan artists and manhwa-style creators (Sukuna, Bakugo×Deku, Sasuke×Naruto, "enemies to lovers" and similar tropes), plus a batch of few-follower "switch to ParaDoor" alt accounts. With these, it caught the female-skewing users flowing out of c.ai in English-speaking markets, then monetized through in-app credits.

1. Current data (googleplay library)

  • Listed 2026-07-28 (the date Play shows, which may have been reset by metadata changes). The developer "ParaDoor" has only this one app.
  • Cumulative global installs rose from 191,067 (10-29) to 216,629 (11-06): +25.6k over 8 days, about 3.2k a day. The average since launch is about 2.2k a day, so it's accelerating recently, but only slightly. Rating count rose from 1,065 to 1,220, +11–26 a day; store rating 4.3.
  • Top Grossing is steadily climbing, while Top Free is flat with a slight dip, which means payments are strengthening (Entertainment category):
    • GB Top Grossing 135 → 70; US Top Grossing 119 → 94; CA 104 → 76; AU 104 → 79; NL 101 → 89 (10-29 → 11-06)
    • GB Top Free best was #37 (11-02), and it's back to #70 from #11-06; US Top Free has stayed in the #140–#197 range
  • The main markets are the US, UK, Canada and Australia, plus the Netherlands, Sweden and Singapore, all English-speaking or English-accepting.
  • In-app purchases $0.99–$99.99 per item, credit-based; the official site says "daily login credits in the first week" and "Zero ads."
  • There's an iOS version with the same name, "ParaDoor: AI Character, Story" (id6779552768), sold by an individual, SHAO CHIN YU. mwm.ai estimates 25k+ downloads and 111 ratings. 11-06 iTunes lookup queries for us/gb/ca/au/sg/ng/ph all returned 0 results, so it may be delisted or moved to another store; unverified. 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. TikTok fanfic-artist creators pushing volume (the core channel, most likely paid partnerships). Searching TikHub for "paradoor" and "#paradoor":
    • @zuzulilo2 (69k followers) started posting "enemy / childhood friend turned gang boss on ParaDoor AI" in late September. One of those posts got 10-20 704k views and 108k likes; another got 10-28 180k views.
    • @zoromodeon (34k followers, Jujutsu Kaisen Sukuna) started posting in 8-03; one post got 10-14 132k views.
    • @shokuonishimya (BakuDeku fanfic) had one post at 10-15 100k views; @apexbru6e (Sukuna x Cinderella) got 66k / 83k views; @kyonparadox (SasuNaru) got 44k views.
    • The captions follow one template: "… on ParaDoor", "Try it for yourself on ParaDoor", "check them out now", and they reuse the same TikTok formats (judge×prisoner, cracking trend). This is a classic creator-driven volume play. Payment can't be confirmed directly, but this degree of uniformity is hard to produce organically.
  2. Riding the Character.AI bankruptcy news:
    • c.ai applied for Chapter 10-12 11; reports said 12M users feared their characters would be deleted (CNN 2026-10-13; Reuters 2026-10-30; c.ai official blog).
    • 3 days later, @zuzulilo posted in 10-15 "what do you mean they went bankrupt? Good thing ParaDoor is my backup 😭" 2
    • Accounts with a few dozen or even single-digit followers, @kyovex0 (20 followers), @anniiepie5 (4 followers), and @lunex0189 (4 followers), repeatedly posted "since cai might get shut down, just switch… download #ParaDoorAI" and "It's better than c.ai with no ads #bankruptcy #shutdown" between 10-05 and 11-04. These look like a sock-puppet matrix or incentivized UGC; unverified.
  3. Ad spend:
    • A post on Reddit r/CAIRevolution reads "Even paradoor ad is roasting character ai". That ad uses a scruffy man to stand for "generic AI chat" and compares it to ParaDoor, a direct comparative ad aimed at c.ai. Ad platform unverified.
    • A Facebook page named "ParaDoor-02" (id 61592838713129) posted a "Not another AI chatbot…" video. The numbered page name suggests several ad pages were run in parallel.
    • Instagram has promoted reels. The website download button goes through an AppsFlyer OneLink (pid=paradoor_web), which indicates an attribution setup.
    • Our metaads, googleads and tiktokads libraries have no record of this product. That only means it isn't on our tracking list; it does not mean it wasn't advertised.
  4. Official accounts: TikTok @paradoor_ai has 6,625 followers and, since late August, has posted character short dramas almost daily, each getting roughly 7–9k views and a few dozen likes. The views-to-likes ratio looks like paid boosting (Spark Ads or similar); unverified. On X, @ParaDoor_AI has only 229 followers, lists Singapore, and was registered 2026-06.
  5. SEO and web pages: paradoor.ai generates a searchable landing page (/content/<id>) for every user-created character and story, targeting long-tail SEO. The homepage title targets the "AI Companion Chat" search term.
  6. Store optimization (ASO): The Play title changed from "ParaDoor: AI Character, Story" to "ParaDoor: AI Interactive Story" (the Zulu-language page still shows the old name), going after the "interactive story" keyword.

4. Why it took off

  • Timing: Character.AI started putting full-screen and in-chat ads into its product in 2026, per piunikaweb 2026-02 and WeavAI 2026-07, then went bankrupt in October. Together, those two moves pushed English-speaking roleplay users to look for alternatives in large numbers for the first time. ParaDoor launched at the end of July, and by the time of the bankruptcy it already had a finished product and creators seeding it at scale, so it landed right in the gap. In the data we've tracked since 10-29, its grossing rank climbed steadily, in line with this window.
  • Precise positioning: The third selling point on the website is "Zero ads", and the TikTok copy repeatedly says "no ads", "better than c.ai", "my backup". Each line hits a pain point of c.ai users.
  • Content aimed at the right audience: Creator material is almost all female-oriented fanfic CPs and "possessive / enemy-to-lovers" tropes, exactly the heavy users of c.ai (teens and young women). This material converts far better than generic companion chat.
  • Monetization design: Credit-based, with a top single pack at $99.99; two model tiers, Standard and Premier (called Jazz Pro on iOS); plus "snapshot cards" (turning a chat into a photo card) and character moods and hidden thoughts. Each of these can be sold separately. Its climb on Top Grossing without a matching rise on Top Free suggests ARPU is improving.

5. Differentiation

The product's edge is a heavier bundle: visuals plus voice, multi-character interactive stories (not just one-on-one chat), Cinema Mode, character moods and hidden thoughts, snapshot cards, long-term memory, and zero ads. Taken one at a time, Talkie, zeta, Janitor and Dulci all have similar features, so the product itself isn't the main reason it took off. What worked was positioning and distribution: it was the only one making "zero ads + c.ai backup" its core message and concentrating it on the bankruptcy window. The contemporaries Afizzy, Amora and Dulci actually have more installs and faster growth, so ParaDoor isn't the big winner of this niche. It just picked up a share of the English-speaking female-oriented segment by riding an event.

6. Visibility

  • No media coverage and no public revenue figures; searches of the X corpus turn up no discussion (x-radar 90 days, 0 posts). Reddit has only scattered mentions.
  • Its buzz exists only inside TikTok's anime fanfic circles; almost nobody in the industry is tracking it.
  • But the niche itself is extremely crowded, with a dozen-plus contemporaneous launches. "Nobody is building this" doesn't apply.

7. Copycats

No clear evidence it copied ParaDoor. Dulci (ORIGO Game, launched 2026-09-18) shares the subtitle "AI Interactive Story", but it looks more like a parallel product in the same niche than a copycat.

8. Takeaways

  • Treat a rival's public problems (bankruptcy, adding ads, adding moderation) as a growth window: prepare a "backup" narrative in advance, so creators and sock accounts can push it within 72 hours of the event.
  • Recruit vertical fanfic artists as creators, use a fixed CTA template, and ride TikTok trending formats. Low cost, very precise.
  • Use the product-level "zero ads" to directly contrast with a rival's pain point, as a comparative ad.
  • Generate one SEO landing page for each UGC character.
  • Give daily credits during the first week to retain users before pushing them to pay.

9. Uncertain

  • Whether creator deals were paid and how much: unverified. Whether the sock accounts are an official matrix: unverified.
  • Which platforms the ads ran on and how much was spent: unverified (not in our ad libraries).
  • No install curve data for before 10-29 (whether there was a jump around the bankruptcy).
  • The current state of the iOS version, and why the individual seller doesn't match the Singapore company entity (possibly an early individual developer account later moved to a company): unverified.
  • Team background: package name butterflylink, iOS seller SHAO CHIN YU, entity in Singapore; presumably a Chinese-run team going global, unverified.
