Ahead of Google opening the door: a small "watch video in the car" player, 6,700 installs and 717 ratings
What it is A player that casts videos from your phone, M3U playlists, and Jellyfin/Emby servers to a car head unit screen. Meant for use while parked.
Why it took off In May, Google said Android Auto would allow video apps this year. By late October it was still "coming soon." People wanting to watch video in the car were searching for it, and the app stuffed those terms into its store listing. Add likely purchased ratings, and it climbed a chart in small countries where the bar is low.
CHow you could follow it Don't build the Nth screen-casting tool that rides keyword traffic. Either build a native media player for Android Automotive head units, or ship a compliant player before Android Auto opens video to capture the new search terms. Find TikTok creators in Vietnam, Thailand, and Mexico who teach "watch video in the car" and partner with them.

A small London studio published a car video player on Google Play in Oct 8. It got 6,734 installs in a month and charted in the top 50 of car categories in Vietnam, Turkey, and Thailand. It looks like it's gaining traction, but a closer look shows two things: a real demand window (Android Auto still doesn't allow video), and a very cheap way to chart (stuffed keywords plus suspicious ratings). Below: what it is, where the traffic came from, and whether you can still take this path.
A Vietnamese tutorial and a "coming soon"
In Oct 28, a Vietnamese TikTok account called @remotecartube posted a tutorial on watching YouTube on an Android Auto head unit. The account has posted several similar videos this year, and its January one got 75k views. The same month, someone in Thailand posted "Android Auto can now play YouTube!" with 17k views, and a Mitsubishi salesperson in Mexico posted "play video on any Android Auto or CarPlay screen" with 39k views (TikTok search, 11-06).
Two days later, on Oct 30,9 to 5, Google's reporting said that at its developer conference, video apps on Android Auto were still "coming soon." Google had announced in May that some cars would let video apps like YouTube run on the head unit while parked this year. With the year-end deadline two months away, there's still no beta. Cars running Google's built-in system (Android Automotive) can already install video apps, but most people use Android Auto, which mirrors the phone to the car, and that route isn't open yet.
Lots of people want to watch video in the car, and the official route isn't ready. Car Cast : Car TV Player was published into that gap.
What it is
It's a player: it plays videos on your phone and video links, imports your own M3U / M3U8 / Xtream playlists, and connects to Jellyfin and Emby media servers. Then you cast to the car screen over Miracast wirelessly or via USB-C to HDMI, and on supported Android Automotive cars you can install it directly.
The store listing has two parts that were clearly written with care. One is a disclaimer: "does not provide, host, or sell IPTV subscriptions, live streams, or movies", "only use while parked safely", "not affiliated with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or any car manufacturer." The other is a blunt admission: "this version cannot play video directly through Android Auto; support is planned for a future update, depending on platform availability." It also warns that a USB or Bluetooth pairing does not mean video output is possible. In other words, the thing most people want (plug in your phone to Android Auto and watch) it can't do yet.
The developer, Syscraft Labs, has a website that says "We find underserved niches, validate fast, and ship lean." It is registered in the UK, publishes only its own apps, and earns from ads, subscriptions, and IAP. The address on the store listing is 71-75 Shelton Street, London, a common registered-agent address.
Where the volume comes from
Start with the numbers (the cumulative installs and rating counts Google Play publishes):
| Date | Total installs | Added that day | Score | New ratings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 1,840 | – | 331 | – |
| 10-31 | 3,368 | +1,528 | 438 | +57 |
| 11-01 | 3,368 | 0 | 499 | +61 |
| 11-02 | 5,670 | +2,302 | 546 | +47 |
| 11-04 | 6,283 | 0 | 639 | +41 |
| 11-05 | 6,283 | 0 | 675 | +36 |
| 11-06 | 6,734 | +451 | 717 | +42 |
Three things look wrong:
- Too many ratings. 717 ratings for 6,734 installs is over 10%; in Oct it was 29%. A normal ratio on Play is usually 1–2%, not 18%.
- Ratings are decoupled from installs. On 11-01, 11-04 and 11-05, installs didn't rise at all, yet ratings still went up by 36 to 61 every day.
- Almost no one is talking. Of 717 ratings, only 3 have written text: "good", "good", "nice app". The reviewers have South Asian names, yet the app charted in Vietnam, Turkey, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. Before Nov 5, the star breakdown was 645 five-star and 29 four-star, with zero one- to three-star ratings.
So the ratings were most likely bought, or come from an "install and get a rating" incentive task (inference, high confidence, no transaction records seen). Third-party estimates of daily new installs also come in bursts: around 690,28 on Oct 24, close to 0 on 29, then 760 to 1,150 a day from Oct 30 to Nov 2, and back down to about 150 after Nov 4 (AppstoreSpy estimates). That doesn't look like organic growth. It looks like batches of purchased installs (inference).
Why can such a small volume chart? Because the car category's bar is very low. In recent days, the #20 free app in Vietnam's car chart had only 7,534 cumulative installs, and #50 had 1,619. Its best ranking was #28 in Turkey on Nov 1. In the US it stayed between #140 and #167 and never made any overall chart.
The rest of its organic traffic comes from store search: the title, package name, and description are packed with car cast, car tv, mirrorlink, screen mirror, M3U, Android Auto, and Android Automotive. The package name is literally mirrorlink, borrowed from a car screen-mirroring standard nobody uses anymore, because people still search for it.
Off-store, it's almost silent: 30 posts on X in 0 days, no TikTok videos found for it, no press coverage. Only auto-generated pages from APK download sites and app analytics sites.
Where the money comes from
No money yet. The store listing lists neither "contains ads" nor "in-app purchases." But the data safety section mentions that device IDs may be shared with third parties and that location is collected, so ad or attribution tools have likely been installed or are about to be (inference). Going by the usual pattern for tools like this, ads and subscriptions will be turned on once volume picks up.
One person, more than one package
In Oct 29, another developer account, Hotstuffbulldogs, published "Car TV M3U IPTV Player" under the package name com.cartv.carvideoplayer. It shares the prefix, and its description is nearly a sentence-by-sentence rewrite ("parked breaks", "charging your EV", "put your M3U playlists, phone videos, and video links in one library"). The contact email for this account starts with khalil, and the contact listed publicly on the Car Cast store page is also named Khalil. Its numbers are even more lopsided: by Nov 4 it still showed 0 installs but already had 107 ratings. On Nov 6, it had 602 installs and 211 ratings, with not a single written review. The account also has older apps such as an endoscope app and a dual-camera app. Its privacy policy is a 2024-year-old blog page, which suggests an old account registered years ago and later repurposed.
The likely explanation is one person running several accounts to push the same idea. If one gets delisted or stalls, another takes over (inference: the names and copy match, but there's no direct proof). There are also real copycats already: Gekko Soft published a "Car Cast : Car TV Player" with the identical name, with 100 downloads, ads included, and no traction yet.
Who else is fighting for this: the street is already packed
| Product | Launched | Scale (Google Play installs) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car TV - IPTV Smart Player | 2023-07 | 16.3M | A generic IPTV player with "Car TV" in its name |
| Car Play Sync for Android Auto(BLOOMUP) | 2023-07 | 3.14M installs, charted in 29 countries | "CarPlay / Android Auto connect" tools that don't play video |
| CarLink - Car Play Connect | 2024-07 | 1.76M | Screen mirroring / connection apps |
| Car Play Connect Auto Sync(MONIQ TAP) | 2026-01 | 1.54M installs, +66k in 7 days, #1 on the Australian Auto & Vehicles Top Grossing chart | Same keyword-riding, already making money |
| Mirror Link - Cast to Car | 2024-08 | 1.02M, 7 days +48k | Head-on rival riding the same Mirror Link keywords for screen mirroring, much earlier and much bigger |
| Car Play Sync for Android Autu(GenieePlus) | 2026-07 | 310k, +66k in 7 days | Charted only this year, but a single week's new installs are ten times Car Cast's total |
| Carstream / Aaad CarStream | 2024-10 / 2025-07 | 140k / 105k | The sideloaded store version that actually lets you watch YouTube on Android Auto |
| Plezy (a Plex / Jellyfin client) | 2025-11 | 17k | A dedicated media server client with Android Automotive support |
Add two more giants in this category. First, Google itself: once Android Auto opens to video apps, official apps like YouTube will show up on the car screen directly, and searches like "car tv" and "watch youtube in car" will get swallowed by them. Second, hardware: CarPlay / Android Auto wireless boxes and car TV boxes that cost a few dozen dollars, with TikTok videos pulling millions to tens of millions of views. They can actually play video in the car, while Car Cast depends on the car's own support for Miracast or HDMI input, which most cars don't have.
Bottom line: Car Cast is a very late, very small entrant on this street. It didn't break out. It's demonstrating a playbook.
What this playbook can teach you, and what it can't
Three things to learn:
- Capabilities the platform has announced but not shipped leave a gap of several months. Demand is being pushed up by news and tutorial videos, official supply hasn't arrived yet, and a tool built around search terms can catch traffic in that window.
- Pick niche categories and small countries. The auto category in Vietnam, Thailand and Turkey lets a few thousand installs get you charted, and the chart listing itself brings a bit of organic exposure. Vietnam and Thailand also happen to be where TikTok has the most "watch YouTube on your car screen" tutorials.
- Put the disclaimer up front. "No content provided, only for use while parked, unrelated to Android Auto." Most M3U player listings on Play say this, which lets you keep the keywords while reducing takedown risk.
What you can't copy, and shouldn't: rating farms and multi-account shell packs violate Play policy, and if caught, your whole developer account gets tied to it. And the gap it relies on has a clear closing date.
If it were you
The verdict: you can learn a playbook of "catch search traffic before the platform opens the door," but copying this one app isn't worth it. The category already has million-install incumbents, and the gap it depends on, Google says, closes this year.
Who it suits: small teams already shipping utility apps on Play with ad monetization and ASO experience, looking for a small category to practice in; or people who are native speakers of Vietnamese, Thai or Spanish and can produce localized tutorials and store pages.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone planning to climb charts with rating farms and sock-puppet accounts (lose the accounts and you lose everything); anyone building a sideloaded "YouTube on Android Auto" solution (a gap Google is explicitly closing, and it becomes pointless the moment the official version opens); anyone expecting this app alone to become a big business.
How to do it: if you must enter, don't build the Nth keyword-riding screen mirroring tool. Build one of two things that still stand after official support arrives. One is a native media player for Android Automotive cars (local files, Jellyfin / Plex, USB drives). As more Google-system cars ship, Google already allows this, competition is thin, and Plezy, a dedicated client, has only 17k installs. The other is to be among the first to ship a compliant player that supports user-supplied sources the moment Android Auto video opens, and capture new terms like "Android Auto video player."
How to get users: rely mainly on store search, with titles and descriptions written in each country's local language; in Vietnam, Thailand and Mexico, partner with TikTok accounts that teach "watch video in the car," since their audiences are already asking "which app do I use?"
Before when: the opening date for Android Auto video apps. Google says it's within 2026 year(s), 9 to 5. Google, Oct 30, and I haven't seen a beta yet. The first approach doesn't need to hit this window; the second must have the app built and approved before the opening.
Signs you've read it wrong: ① Car Cast or those shell apps get delisted within 30 days, meaning Play is cleaning up this type, and the playbook itself doesn't hold; ② by 2027 January, Android Auto still hasn't opened video, while weekly new installs for keyword-riding tools keep growing, meaning the gap is longer than thought and worth entering earlier; ③ conversely, if within a month of opening, weekly new installs for older tools like Mirror Link - Cast to Car drop by more than half, it means search traffic really is being eaten by official apps, and "catching the gap" is only worth a few months.

Why Car Cast: Car TV Player (com.cartv.mirrorlink) managed to chart
Channel: Google Play · Developer: Syscraft Labs (SYSCRAFT LABS LTD, registered at a London address on 71-75 Shelton Street, a common registered-agent address) · First published 2026-10-08 · Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It didn't really break out. This is an app studio that describes itself as specializing in "finding niche categories and validating them fast." It rode the hot demand for "watching video on the car screen while parked" (Google announced in May 2026 that Android Auto would open to video apps, and it's still "coming soon") and shipped a screen mirroring / M3U player packed with keywords. It has only 6,734 installs worldwide. It charted because the auto category has a low bar. It has 717 ratings but only 3 written reviews, none at 1–2 stars, and its ratings keep rising even when installs don't, strong signs of rating manipulation or incentivized ratings. It also appears that the same person (Khalil) is likely using another developer account to spread the same sock-puppet packs.
I. Data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
| Date | Total installs | New today | Score | New ratings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 1,840 | – | 331 | – |
| 10-31 | 3,368 | +1,528 | 438 | +57 |
| 11-01 | 3,368 | 0 | 499 | +61 |
| 11-02 | 5,670 | +2,302 | 546 | +47 |
| 11-03 | 6,283 | +613 | 598 | +52 |
| 11-04 | 6,283 | 0 | 639 | +41 |
| 11-05 | 6,283 | 0 | 675 | +36 |
| 11-06 | 6,734 | +451 | 717 | +42 |
- Since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimate): from 10-21 daily installs of about 200,10-24 climbed to about 690,10-28/29, nearly 0,10-30~11-02 per day, then 760–1,150,11-04~06 dropped back to about 150 per day. It comes in bursts, not a smooth organic curve.
- Charts (chart_rank): only on the AUTO_AND_VEHICLES free category chart, in 14 countries. Best positions: TR #28 (11-01), VN #43, TH #45; in the US it stayed around 140–167. On the same day, the app at VN auto chart #20 had only 7,534 cumulative installs and was #50 with just 1,619. This chart only takes a few thousand installs to get on. It has never entered any overall chart or top grossing chart.
- Monetization: in the library, offers_iap = False and ad_supported = False; the store page has no "contains ads" or "in-app purchases" label, so it isn't earning right now. But the data safety section says it "may share device IDs with third parties" and "collects location," so an ad or attribution SDK is likely already in the package or about to be added.
II. Rating anomalies: clear signs of rating farming / incentivized ratings
- Rating / install ratio: 11-06 is 717 / 6,734 ≈ 10.6%; 10-29 is 331 / 1,840 ≈ 18%. On Play, normal is usually 1–2%.
- It has only 3 written reviews (app_snap.written_reviews). The store page shows just "good" (Satveer Yadav, 10-30), "good" (md bipul, 11-03), "nice app" (MOHAN PAWAR, 10-29). All very short template phrases, all from reviewers with South Asian names. Yet its charts are mostly in VN/TR/TH/SA/IT.
- Star distribution: 11-05 was [1 0-star, 2 0-star, 3 0-star, 4 29-star, 5 645-star] all along, with not a single bad review. 11-06 was the first time 14 3-star reviews appeared.
- 11-01, 11-04 and 11-05: cumulative installs stayed flat over three days, yet ratings kept rising by +36 to +61 every day. Rating count and installs are decoupled.
- Verdict: this looks like ratings bought from a rating/task platform (or incentivized installs that also leave ratings), used to push ratings and the car-category chart. No transaction proof obtained, so marked "strong inference, unverified."
3. The same person is likely running look-alike packages
com.cartv.carvideoplayer"Car TV M3U IPTV Player", developer Hotstuffbulldogs, listed 2026-10-29. The package prefix is the samecom.cartv., and the description is almost sentence-for-sentence a rewrite of this app ("parked breaks", "charging your EV", "M3U playlists, phone videos and video links into one library").- Developer email [email protected]; the public developer contact on this app's store page is [email protected]. Both names are Khalil.
- Its numbers are even wilder: 11-04 has 0 installs but already 107 ratings. 11-06 is 602 installs with 211 ratings (35%), and it has 0 written reviews. It also hit #28 on the TR Auto free chart.
- Hotstuffbulldogs also has Dual Capture and USB Endoscope Camera. Its privacy policy page is a 2024-year-old blogspot, which looks like an old account registered early and reused later.
- Verdict: the same operator is likely running several developer accounts to flood the same product (a small-account matrix), so when one package gets pulled or stops performing, another takes over. The overlapping names in emails and the same-source copy make this fairly credible, but it is not directly proven.
- There is also a real copycat:
com.car.cast(Gekko Soft, developer id 6328199383390788821), with the same name "Car Cast : Car TV Player". Its description has the same structure. It has 100+ downloads, contains ads, and has not taken off yet.
4. What it does and where the demand comes from
- Features (store page): local video and link playback, M3U / M3U8 / Xtream playlists, Jellyfin / Emby, phone-to-car-head-unit casting via Miracast or USB-C / HDMI, plus a native Android Automotive OS (AAOS) version. The description has a long disclaimer: it provides no IPTV content, is for use only while parked, and states plainly that "this version does not support playing video directly on Android Auto."
- Timing:
- Google announced at 2026 May I/O that video apps would be allowed to run while parked on Android Auto for some models this year. By 10-30 9 to 5, Google was still reporting "still coming soon, with the year-end deadline approaching." Video apps on AAOS (Google built-in) are already open, and the browser is still in beta. <9to5google.com/2026/10/30/google-android-auto-video-apps-dea…>
- Starting February 2025, Google ran a "Car ready mobile apps" program to put phone apps in the Play store on AAOS head units. <developer.android.com/training/cars/car-ready-mobile-apps>
- "Watching YouTube / Netflix in the car" is a hot topic on TikTok. CarPlay box sales videos reach hundreds of thousands to 19M views (e.g., @dangdeals 19.4M), and there are plenty of "Android screen-casting to the car head unit" tutorials (search on TikHub). Users are looking for "watch video in the car," and many search the store for car tv / mirror link / cast to car.
- This app rushed out before Android Auto officially opened video, stuffing "car tv / car cast / mirrorlink / screen mirror / M3U / Android Auto" into the title, package name and description to catch search traffic. The package name is literally
mirrorlink, riding on the name of the MirrorLink standard, which has been discontinued.
5. Competitors

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car TV - IPTV Smart Player(Dmitri Iasibas) | Android | 2023-07 | 16.3M installs, +24k in 7 days | Also has "Car TV" in the name, but is really a general IPTV player. This one focuses on the car scenario and adds casting and AAOS. |
| Car Play Sync for Android Auto(BLOOMUP) | Android | 2023-07 | 3.14M installs, charting in 29 countries | Makes CarPlay / Android Auto "connection" tools (mostly onboarding screens + ads). This one focuses on video playback. |
| Car Play Connect Auto Sync(MONIQ TAP) | Android | 2026-01 | 1.54M installs, +7k in 66 days, AU car top grossing #1 | A tool riding the same CarPlay / Android Auto keywords, already monetizing. This app is not monetizing yet. |
| Car Play Sync for Android Autu(GenieePlus) | Android | 2026-07 | 310K installs, +7K over 66 days, charting in 30 countries | Same as above, dozens of times the scale. |
| Mirror Link - Cast to Car(Wallet Passes Alliance) | Android | 2024-08 | 1.02M installs, +48k in 7 days | Direct competitor: also riding Mirror Link keywords for car casting, much earlier and much bigger. |
| CarLink - Car Play Connect(CoolDev) | Android | 2024-07 | 1.76M installs | Screen mirroring / connection apps |
| Carstream Android / Aaad CarStream | Android | 2024-10 / 2025-07 | 140k / 105k installs | The store version of the "AAAD-style" sideload approach for watching YouTube on Android Auto. This app does not support Android Auto. |
| Plezy: Media Server Client(edde746) | Android | 2025-11 | 17k installs, AE entertainment top paid #1 | A Plex / Jellyfin client with AAOS support. This app treats a media server as just one feature. |
| Google official: Android Auto parked-video apps, YouTube / Google Cast on AAOS | Big-company features | AAOS is already open; Android Auto is "coming soon" within 2026 | – | Once the official launch happens, this app's "no Android Auto video right now" gap is gone, and search terms get taken by official YouTube-type apps. |
| Hardware: CarPlay / AA wireless boxes and car-TV adapters such as AutoSky | Other | Already there | TikTok sales videos with million-level views | Hardware solutions that really do play video on the head unit. This app depends on the car supporting Miracast / HDMI, which most cars in practice cannot use. |
Bottom line: this niche is already crowded with similar tools. This app entered very late and is very small.
6. Growth tactics
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Store search (keyword-stuffed ASO) | Title / package name / description stuffed with car cast, car tv, mirrorlink, screen mirror, M3U, Android Auto, Android Automotive | Yes |
| Buying ratings / incentivized ratings to push category charts | Rating / installs 10–18%; 717 ratings with only 3 text reviews; before 11-05 there were no 1–3 stars; rating still rises 36~61 per day while installs stay flat | Inference (very strong) |
| Pulsed paid acquisition / incentivized installs | AppstoreSpy's estimated daily installs jump between 0, 690, 1,150 and 150 | Inferred |
| Organic traffic from low-bar category charts | Hitting #43 on the VN Auto free chart needs only a few thousand cumulative installs | Yes |
| Sibling-app matrix | Hotstuffbulldogs' com.cartv.carvideoplayer shares the prefix, the copy and the contact name Khalil | Inference (high) |
| Paid ads | Not in the metaads / googleads tracking lists (not being listed doesn't mean no ads were run) | Not verified |
| TikTok / X / Reddit / press | x-radar: 30 posts in 0 days; TikHub search finds none of its videos; the web only has aggregator pages like AppBrain, Softonic and APKPure | None found |
7. Visibility
Few people know about it: no media coverage, 0 posts on X, no disclosed revenue, and no monetization yet. Only auto-generated app stats pages exist.
8. What to borrow
- Platform event arbitrage: the platform has announced a capability (Android Auto parked video) that has not launched yet. For a few months there is strong demand and weak official supply, so a tool riding the keywords catches search traffic.
- Picking cold categories and small countries: the car category on VN/TR/TH can chart with just a few thousand installs, and charting brings a bit of organic exposure.
- Compliance wording: long disclaimers in the description (no content provided, parked use only, not affiliated with Android Auto) let you stuff keywords while reducing takedown risk. M3U / Xtream players on Play usually read this way.
- Multiple IDs for one idea: the same concept is pushed through several developer accounts at once, spreading takedown risk.
- Risks: fake ratings and look-alike packages violate Play policy. Once Android Auto officially opens video, this gap will likely close.
9. What I'm still unsure about
- Whether the ratings were bought: no direct evidence (no task-platform orders found).
- Whether Hotstuffbulldogs and Syscraft Labs are the same person: judged only from overlapping names and same-source copy.
- Whether Google UAC / Meta ads were run: the ad libraries do not cover it.
- How it will monetize later (ads or subscription): not live yet.
- I can't tell whether the AAOS in-car install counts toward this 6,734 or how much of it does.
