> Expense tracking is a daily need everywhere in the world. It wrote its store titles in local search terms for 50 storefronts (in Taiwan it's 'Meow Meow Bookkeeping'), and got steady organic traffic on finance charts in smaller regions like Taiwan and Hong Kong. The 'getting scolded by a cat' angle and the one-time purchase model made Thai iOS users willing to pay.

# A Cat That Scolds You for Overspending: a bookkeeping app built solo in Bangkok, with users from Taiwan and money from Thailand

**What it is** A multi-currency expense tracker with net-worth tracking. Three cats with different personalities change mood and roast you depending on how much more you spent this month than last; free with ads, with Pro and the paid cats sold as one-time purchases.

**Why it's taking off** Expense tracking is a need people search for every day worldwide. It writes its store titles in local search terms across 50 storefronts (in Taiwan it's 「喵喵記帳」), and it gets steady organic traffic from finance charts in small markets like Taiwan and Hong Kong. Being scolded by a cat plus the one-time purchase model gets Thai iOS users to pay.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another cute expense tracker. Take the "characterful cat that roasts you + one-time purchase + store pages in dozens of languages" and apply it to dry tools like water tracking, sleep, or habit check-ins. Or add what its users are asking for: budgets, finer categories, widgets.

Grade B: cheap to pursue, copyable by one person, almost unknown, and already proven to earn money. But the expense-tracking niche is crowded, the scale is small (26.7k installs, estimated revenue under a few thousand dollars a month), and a mascot that roasts users was copied within a month by Japan's Moneypet, so the ceiling is low and the moat is shallow. Hardly anyone knows about it

Money Meow (Chinese store name 「喵喵記帳」) is an expense tracker from a solo indie developer in Bangkok. It launched in July and had 26.7k Google Play installs by Nov 6, still growing 18% over the last 7 days. The function is a serious multi-currency expense tool wrapped in Japanese washi-paper styling, with three cats that change faces and roast you based on your spending. It's small and nearly unknown, but it's already taking in money. Here's what it is, where the users come from, where the money comes from, why its same-named Taiwanese counterpart earned only 17 cents in three months, and how you could follow it.

### Three Thai videos, then it stopped posting

In Jul 2026 26, a new TikTok account called @moneymeowmiki posted its first video with the caption: "Expense tracking app, super useful and super cute, and most importantly, it has cats." The next day it posted another, tagged #ใช้เงินให้แมวด่า, which means "spend money and let the cat scold you."

The three videos together got about 10.3k views, and the account has 10 followers (TikHub, 11-06). The account hasn't posted since.

The account belongs to the developer. His name is Daron Tancharoen, based in Bangkok. His LinkedIn lists him as CTO of a company, and the Google Play developer name is Celestial Insights. He previously made a tarot app (Tarot Meow, 19k Play installs). Money Meow went up on Google Play in Jul 10 and on iOS in Jul 20.

The promotion ran for three days and then stopped, but the installs didn't:

| Date | Google Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|
| 10-29 | 22,627 |
| 11-02 | 25,264 |
| 11-06 | 26,674 |

Over the last 7 days it's +4,047, about 450 to 1,350 installs a day, with a flat curve and no sudden spike like paid campaigns produce. Averaged over the 4 months since launch, it's about 220 installs a day, and the last week was more than double that.

### What it is: a serious expense tool dressed as a cat

Open it and the home screen is a "cat mood card." The cat's mood is calculated automatically from "how much more you spent this month than last," in five levels: ecstatic, satisfied, suspicious, disappointed, furious. The homepage demo shows a cat with a sideways glance and the line "Another coffee? Really?"

The three cats have different personalities (from the Taiwan Play store copy):

- Mochi (tabby): loyal, supportive, free and the default;

- Mikki (calico Scottish fold): "the queen of venomous roasts," paid;

- Anzu (Ragdoll): a warm "cat mom" who urges you to balance saving and treating yourself, paid.

Under the cats is a full-featured expense app: multi-currency (each account has its own currency, converted automatically), net worth and liabilities, daily/weekly/monthly/yearly reports, CSV import and export (with a column-mapping wizard, so moving over from another app is easy), iCloud and Google backup, no sign-up, and data stays on the device. New users see a demo ledger for 3 years, so the reports look full. The interface is cream paper, near-black ink, and vermilion accents, and the store page says it's inspired by "traditional Japanese paint-and-washi notebooks."

It's paid only by one-time purchase, no subscription: the free version has ads and limited daily actions; Pro is ฿269 (NT$290 in Taiwan) once, removing ads and unlocking everything; each of the two paid cats is ฿199 (NT$190).

### Where the users come from: store pages in 50 languages

The odd part is that the developer is in Thailand and posted Thai videos, yet the Google Play charts pushing it up are all Chinese-language and Southeast Asian small markets. 11-06 It ranks #71 on Taiwan's Play Finance free chart (it has stayed between #71 and #96 for the last 9 days), #74 in Hong Kong, #109 in Singapore, and #167 in Malaysia. Thailand isn't in the top 200, because Thailand's Play Finance free chart is filled with bank and loan apps.

The most likely reason is localization. Its listing says it supports 50 languages, and each storefront's title is swapped for the local search term people would actually use:

- Taiwan: "Miaomiao Bookkeeping: Budget & Finance Helper"

- Hong Kong: 「喵喵記帳:收支管理」

- Japan: 「マネーニャン:家計簿アプリ」

- Korea: 「머니야옹: 가계부 앱」

- Malaysia: 「Money Meow: Urus Kewangan」

Even the update notes mention fixing character display for Vietnamese, Polish, and Turkish. A single person building an app in Flutter can write local keywords into titles for 50 storefronts, and in a category people search for every day worldwide, that's a steady stream of organic traffic.

The Chinese name may also have helped (inferred). 「喵喵记账」 is the name of a long-running cat-themed expense app in mainland China, with 638k ratings on the China App Store. It's also on Android in China but not on Google Play. People in Taiwan and Hong Kong searching for 「喵喵記帳」 on Play may land on Money Meow instead. There's no search-term data to confirm this. The China App Store also lists it as 「喵喵记账:轻松管理财务」, but there it has only 1 ratings, because the established competitor is too strong.

### Its same-named Taiwanese counterpart earned 17 cents in three months

The name alone isn't enough. A small Taiwanese team, 翱翼數位, released an expense app also called 「喵喵記帳」 on Google Play in Sep 4. It also features a cute cat, manual entry, ads plus a one-time ad-removal purchase, and it promises to donate half its ad revenue to a stray-cat fan page. It publicly disclosed its AdMob revenue: 2026 9 to October, US$0.17 total (official site, updated 10-18).

Same name, same market, almost the same positioning. One made the finance charts; the other made 17 cents in two months. What's the difference? Three things stand out: Money Meow launched two months earlier; its cat has a personality and talks back instead of just decorating the screen; and the app is complete enough to actually use for bookkeeping (multi-currency, net worth, CSV import). On the Taiwan Play Store listing it has 829 reviews and a 4.8 rating (11-06). For an app with 26.7k installs, that's a high ratio, so users are willing to stop and rate it.

### Where the money comes from: Thai users buying it outright on iOS

Play brings the volume from Chinese-speaking markets, but the money mostly comes from iOS in Thailand. On the Thai App Store it has 198 ratings (10-28 more than 153,9 days ago, 40 more), its best Top Grossing finance rank was #19 (11-03), and over 9 days it ranged between 19 and 72. The Taiwan store has 68 ratings and Top Grossing ranks of 52 to 149; its best in Indonesia was 32. The Thai finance Top Grossing bar is low, so revenue isn't large, probably under a few thousand US dollars a month (unverified).

Thai reviews are almost all five stars and mention these points:

- "Bought Pro once and it's yours forever. Love it, and it's so cute" (10-31)

- "Paid a little and the ads are gone" (09-22)

- "Better than other expense apps. Not complicated but has everything. The cat is cute enough that I want to log expenses every day" (07-31)

Taiwan reviews are four to five stars, but users are starting to ask for more: budget features, finer categories (10-06), a custom monthly start date (09-23), and a home screen widget (08-31). Some Thai users also say "the menu is still limited" (10-14). In short, users come for the cat, and whether they stay depends on how detailed the bookkeeping is.

### Who it's competing with

Cute expense trackers are an already crowded category. Install counts below are from Google Play:

| Product | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Miaomiao Bookkeeping (Chongqing, mainland China) | iOS China store 638k ratings | Cat collecting and idle management, subscription, not on Google Play |
| Money+ Cute Expense Tracker | 4.14M installs | The cute-expense-tracker elder brother, with no snarky personality |
| Meow Money Manager | 930k installs | The cat is just a skin, mass-produced by a tool factory |
| MeowJot เหมียวจด (backed by Kasikornbank, Thailand) | 570k installs | Thai local cat-themed expense tracker that reads transfer screenshots to log automatically. Heavily reviewed by Thai TikTok creators (top single video 2.68M views) |
| Moneypet (Japan) | 4,952 installs, +1,197 over the last 7 days | Launched 2026-08. Pet comments on every expense, plus RPG progression. Closest to Money Meow, and also on the Taiwan finance free chart |
| Cleo AI (US) | 6.93M installs | The prototype of "roasting you for spending." Bank connections and subscription model |
| NYAKEI 貓缶簿 (Taiwan) | Not checked | Eight cats as eight budget envelopes, with AI chat-based expense logging |

Money Meow didn't open a new category. It layered "Cleo-style roasting" on top of "cute expense tracking," then swapped in a cat, a one-time purchase, and distribution across 50 languages. None of that is hard to copy. Japan's Moneypet came out a month later with nearly the same "pet comments on your spending."

### If it were you

**B** : Worth a try, but don't expect it to get big. What Money Meow proves is a cheap playbook: a utility people need, a character with personality, a one-time purchase, and store pages in dozens of languages. That lets one person get a few hundred organic installs a day in a crowded category and collect money. It does not prove this path reaches hundreds of thousands of installs or tens of thousands of dollars a month. The category itself is crowded, and someone can ship a mascot idea within a month.

**Who it suits** : a solo developer or a pair who can build a complete utility app and will take localization seriously (at minimum rewriting store titles with each region's search terms, not machine-translating them). Some drawing skill, or access to an artist, helps. The character is a selling point.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to differentiate on "cute expense tracking" alone (Money+ has 4.14M installs and Miaomiao Bookkeeping has 638k ratings already). Anyone who builds a shell with thin features (the same-name, same-positioning Taiwan app earning 17 cents in two months shows what that looks like). Anyone aiming at Thailand specifically (there's MeowJot, with bank backing and automatic logging, plus saturated creator reviews).

**How to do it** : two routes. (1) **Port the formula to other utility categories** instead of making another expense tracker: water intake, sleep, habit tracking, workout logs, study timers. These are tools people search for worldwide and that feel cold. Add a character that changes mood based on your performance and talks back. Make one free and one or two paid, sell a one-time purchase that removes ads, and skip subscriptions. (2) **Do what Money Meow hasn't done well** : the budget, finer categories, custom start dates, and home screen widget that Taiwan users are asking for, plus more snarky lines and holiday outfits. The roast content itself is the reason to open the app every day.

**How to get users** : store search is the main channel. At launch, cover 30–50 languages, and in each region write titles as "local category keyword + your name" (see "喵喵記帳：記帳理財小幫手" and "マネーニャン：家計簿アプリ"). Watch small-region finance charts like Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The bar is low, and a chart placement brings extra exposure. For the Chinese name, look for a term that's well known in mainland China but not yet taken on Google Play's Traditional Chinese storefronts. Short video is only a supplement: Money Meow's own 3 videos drew 10k views, which doesn't move much volume. If you do it, film the "getting roasted by a cat" moment, not the features.

**Timing** : there's no hard deadline, since this playbook doesn't rely on a one-time event. But "pets commenting on your spending" already has a second player (Moneypet). If you want to do expense tracking, move before early 2027. For other utility categories, the window is still open.

**Signs you've misread it** : (1) Money Meow's Play installs stall around 30k and it drops off the Taiwan and Hong Kong finance charts before 2027 January. That would mean the volume was mostly launch support, not something localization can sustain. (2) The reverse: it climbs past 100k or enters the Taiwan Play finance Top Grossing chart. That would mean the ceiling is higher than it looks and worth attacking head-on. (3) Moneypet or Money+ adds a character that talks back and launches across many languages. Once a big player fills that layer, the gap closes for small developers.

Where users come from

- Inference **Store search / localized ASO in 50 languages** : every regional title carries local search terms (喵喵記帳：記帳理財小幫手, マネーニャン：家計簿アプリ, Urus Kewangan, and so on). The only Play charts it appears on are Chinese-language and Southeast Asian small-region finance charts.

- Inference **Riding on the name (喵喵記帳 ↔ mainland's 喵喵记账)** : the Chinese names are nearly identical. The other app is only on the mainland App Store, and it isn't on Google Play in Taiwan or Hong Kong. There's no search-term data, so this can't be confirmed.

- **Verified** **Developer posts TikTok himself** : @moneymeowmiki posted 3 Thai-language videos between 07-25 and 07-27, about 10.3k views in total, 10 followers (TikHub).

- Inference **Paid acquisition** : the Meta, Google, and TikTok ad libraries don't track it, and the install curve is smooth with no sudden spikes.

## Why Money Meow: Expense Tracker (喵喵記帳) works

> Package com.celestialinsights.moneymeow · Google Play listed 2026-07-10 · iOS id6784250762 (listed 2026-07-20) · research date 2026-11-06

### One line

An indie developer in Bangkok, Daron Tancharoen (Play developer name Celestial Insights), built an expense tracker with a cat that roasts you for spending. The core is a complete multi-currency expense and net worth tool, wrapped in a Japanese washi-style interface with three cats of different personalities as mascots. The free version has ads. Pro is a one-time purchase at ฿269 / NT$290, and each of the two paid cats is ฿199 / NT$190. There's no subscription.

**Bottom line** : the volume isn't big, but it's already a small business that earns money from organic traffic. On iOS, the money mostly comes from the developer's home market of Thailand (Thai finance Top Grossing ranks 19–72, 198 ratings). On Play, the installs mostly come from Chinese-speaking markets like Taiwan and Hong Kong. The Chinese-language volume most likely comes from store pages localized into 50 languages, and the Chinese name probably benefits from sharing a name with mainland China's Miaomiao Bookkeeping, which has 638k ratings. No evidence of paid acquisition or creator promotion turned up, and no press has covered it. Its differentiator is combining Cleo's "roast you for spending" with a Japanese cute-pet aesthetic, then charging a one-time fee. That mix makes it stand out in a sea of similar expense trackers, but how far it goes depends mostly on how widely the localization reaches. The product itself has a shallow moat.

### 1. Data (googleplay / appstore libraries, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)

**Google Play**

| Date | Installs | Daily increase |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 22,627 | – |
| 10-31 | 23,907 | +1,280 |
| 11-02 | 25,264 | +1,357 |
| 11-03 | 25,734 | +470 |
| 11-05 | 26,218 | +484 |
| 11-06 | 26,674 | +456 |

- +4,047 over the last 7 days (about +18% per week), averaging about 580 installs a day. Averaged over 4 months since launch, it's about 220 installs a day, so it's accelerating.

- Free finance charts: Taiwan 79→71 (stayed between 71–96 for 9 days), Hong Kong 143→74 (11-06 jumped up), Singapore 109, Malaysia 167 (both of these are its first time charting, 11-06). In Thailand's Play finance free chart, the top 60 are filled by bank and loan apps, and it isn't in the top 200.

- 各区 Play 标题:台湾「喵喵記帳：記帳理財小幫手」、香港「喵喵記帳：收支管理」、马来西亚「Money Meow: Urus Kewangan」(chart_rank.title)。

- The same developer's Tarot Meow (2025-04 listing, tarot readings) has 18,965 installs on Play, +7 over the last 418 days. The "50k+" figure in the recall card doesn't match our database, so we go with the database.

**App Store**

| Store | Ratings (11-06) | best finance category chart rank |
|---|---|---|
| Thailand | 198 (10-28 is +40 in 153,9 days) | Top Grossing 19 (11-03), 9 days charted between 19–72 |
| Taiwan | 68 (10-28 is 56) | Top Grossing 52–149 |
| Vietnam | 38 | Top Grossing 113–197 |
| Indonesia | 25 | Top Grossing 32–151 |
| Hong Kong | 9 | Top Grossing 61 |
| Hungary | 1 | Top Grossing 22–41 (low bar in small stores) |
| US | 7 | – |

- In-app purchases (Thai App Store page): Money Meow Pro ฿269, Miki the Anti-Social Cat ฿199, Anko - your supportive mom cat ฿199. The Taiwan store equivalents are NT$290 / NT$190 (recall card).

- User reviews (appstore database) are almost all five-star Thai reviews: "Pro is a lifetime purchase, I love it, and it's cute" (10-31), "Paid a little and there are no more ads" (09-22), "The cat is so cute I want to come in every day to log expenses" (07-31). No Play reviews were captured.

### II. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Money Meow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 喵喵记账 (Chongqing Aiyo Aiyo / Shuman) | iOS China store | 2019-12 | China iOS 638k ratings | It plays on cat collecting and management sim mechanics, sold by subscription, mainland China only. Money Meow shares the name, but has no raising mechanics. It's a serious bookkeeping tool. |
| Money+ Cute Expense Tracker(zotiger) | Android/iOS | 2020-06 | 4.14M installs on Play, and it charts in Taiwan's finance Top Grossing. | The cute-expense-tracker elder brother, with no snarky personality |
| Meow Money Manager & Tracker(glgjing) | Android | 2023-01 | 930k Play installs | The cat is just a theme skin on a tool shipped in bulk by a tool factory. |
| MeowJot เหมียวจด (KBTG / KASIKORNBANK group) | Android/iOS Thailand | 2023 | 570k installs on Play, heavy Thai TikTok creator reviews (top single video 2.68M views) | A local Thai cat-themed bookkeeping app that reads transfer screenshots and logs expenses automatically, backed by a bank. Money Meow is manual entry only. |
| Moneypod (Wanmai Apps, Thailand) | Android | 2022-03 | 250k Play installs | Thai cute-style expense tracker with no personified roasting |
| Moneypet (Japan's Moneypet K.K.) | Android/iOS | 2026-08 | 4,952 installs on Play, +7 over the last 1,197 days, also on Taiwan's finance Top Free chart | The closest contemporary rival: a pet comments on every expense, plus RPG raising mechanics. It launched a month after Money Meow. |
| Cleo AI | iOS/Android | 2019 | 6.93M Play installs | The prototype of "roast mode, a mocking AI for your spending": US-based, subscription, bank-connected. Money Meow turned the roasting into a cat, and it works offline and is a one-time purchase. |
| Local Taiwan bookkeeping apps (CWMoney 3.21M, Smoney 1.12M, Mabu Bookkeeping 320k) | Android | 2011–2021 | See left | Utility-focused or auto-logging, with no emotional pet design. |

Takeaway: "cute pet bookkeeping" is a crowded niche that was already saturated. Money Meow didn't open a new category. It stacked three things on top of the existing niche: a personified cat that roasts you, a Japanese washi-paper aesthetic, and multi-currency with net worth tracking.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Store search + localization into 50 languages (main driver, likely reliable)** : every store title carries the local core search term, such as "喵喵記帳：記帳理財小幫手", "マネーニャン：家計簿アプリ", "Money Meow: Urus Kewangan", "Money Meow: Controle Gastos", "머니야옹: 가계부 앱". The description says "Full Localization… in 50 languages", and recent update notes fix Vietnamese, Polish, and Turkish character rendering. Its Play charting is all Chinese and Southeast Asian markets, which fits a pattern of search-driven discovery.

2. **Riding a famous name (speculative)** : the Chinese name 「喵喵記帳」 is nearly identical to the mainland China app 「喵喵记账」, which has 638k ratings. That app is only on the mainland China App Store (not Google Play). People in Taiwan and Hong Kong searching for 「喵喵記帳」 on Play probably land on Money Meow. There's no search-term data to confirm this.

3. **The developer's own TikTok (confirmed, but small)** : account @moneymeowmiki (display name "Money Meow: จดรายรับรายจ่าย"), with 3 Thai-language videos posted between 07-25 and 07-27, about 10.3k views total and 10 followers. Hashtag #ใช้เงินให้แมวด่า ("spend money and let the cat scold you") (TikHub). They tried it in Thailand around launch and didn't post again after that.

4. **Paid acquisition (no evidence)** : Meta, Google, and TikTok ad libraries show no record of it. Play installs run 450–1,350 per day on a smooth curve, with no spike shape that suggests a paid push.

5. **Media, X, Reddit, creators** : none found. x-radar searches for "money meow", "moneymeow", and "喵喵記帳" return 0 relevant posts each. Jina searches only surface the store pages and its own website.

6. **The developer's existing cat IP** : Miki the cat first appeared in the Tarot Meow and food additive scanner apps, which makes for an IP matrix. But those apps are small (Tarot Meow 19k installs, scanner iOS 0 ratings), so they don't drive much traffic to Money Meow.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Cute theme combined with a real need** : bookkeeping is a long-running need that people search for in every market. "Cute + roast" gives people a reason to tap it in store search results. Reviews keep repeating "น่ารัก" (cute) and "ใช้ดี" (works well).

- **Broad localization** : a one-person app covering 50 languages, with local keywords in every store title. Small-market finance charts have low entry barriers (Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Hungary, Botswana), so it charts easily, and charting brings more exposure.

- **One-time purchase is a win on payments** : Pro is ฿269 paid once, with ads removed. That's a low bar for Southeast Asian users who dislike subscriptions. Each cat is also sold separately, a second revenue stream from the IP. Thailand's finance Top Grossing chart reaching #20–#40 shows people really are paying (the Thai market is low-bar, so the amounts are modest).

- **Product polish doesn't look like a small shop** : multi-currency, automatic exchange rates, net worth, CSV import/export, iCloud / Google Drive backup, a 3-year sample ledger, offline-first, and frequent updates (iOS 1.0.12,09-27). ### 5. Differentiation

- Compared with utility bookkeeping (Money Manager, Wallet, CWMoney): it adds emotional feedback. The cat's mood switches automatically across five levels (happy → satisfied → suspicious → disappointed → furious) based on this month versus last month, with roast cards.

- Compared with pet bookkeeping (喵喵记账, Money+, Moneypod): no collecting or raising. The cat comes in three "personalities" (standard, sharp-tongued, warm mom), and some are paid. The aesthetic is Japanese washi paper with vermilion red, not pastel cartoon.

- Compared with Cleo: the cat roasts you instead of an AI, with no bank connection, works offline, and is a one-time purchase.

- **Is this why it took off?** Partly. "Getting scolded by a cat" is a hook that makes people tap, buy the cat, and convert to paid (Miki and Anko sell separately). But the volume mostly comes from localized ASO and search traffic from the same Chinese name. The differentiation itself is easy to copy: Japan's Moneypet launched a month later with nearly the same "a pet comments on every expense" idea.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **almost no one knows about it yet** . Revenue isn't public, there's no press or X coverage, and its own TikTok has only 10k views.

- Copycats: none clearly spotted yet. Japan's Moneypet (2026-08-24 listing) is very close in concept, but it looks more like parallel independent ideas than a copy.

### VII. What to take away

1. Pick a long-running utility category with a real need, use a personality-driven mascot as the emotional hook, and put the paywall on the character, not the features.

2. A one-person Flutter app can localize into 50 languages cheaply. Write each store title with that market's core search term, and target low-barrier small-market finance charts.

3. One-time purchase plus ad removal, combined with cheap in-app character purchases, suits Southeast Asian and Chinese-speaking users who dislike subscriptions.

4. Find same-name or near-name matches to strong brands in local languages (喵喵記帳), and catch the search traffic in stores where the original doesn't have coverage (Google Play Taiwan, Hong Kong).

### 8. Not sure

- Whether Taiwan and Hong Kong Play installs came from search or from a small Google App Campaigns spend. The ad libraries don't track it, so it can't be determined.

- Actual revenue: Thailand's finance Top Grossing bar is low, so monthly gross is likely under a few thousand US dollars (unverified).

- Retention: Play's rating count isn't public and no Play reviews were captured, so retention can't be assessed.

- The recall card says Tarot Meow has 50k+ installs, but our database shows 19k. They don't match.
