A 12-second video posted before Ramadan, and an Android version that arrived seven months later: how a Quran lock-screen widget app copied the Bible app template

What it is A widget app that puts Quran verses and prayers on your phone's lock screen and home screen, plus prayer times, qibla direction, a tasbih counter and zakat calculator. It monetizes through a long onboarding flow followed by a subscription paywall.

Why it took off It took the Bible widget template that was already making money and swapped in Islamic content. It launched two weeks before Ramadan and used a few TikTok alt accounts posting the same line to get millions of views. The Android version carried over the iOS name and paywall and caught the Android users who had been waiting six months.

CHow you could play it Stop making Quran widgets. Take the "faith content × lock-screen widget × subscription" model to a faith or language group nobody has served yet. Launch two weeks before the holiday, use short videos from local-language alt accounts to build traction, make the paywall clear, and make subscriptions restorable.

Grade C: the Quran widget already has a top app with 66k ratings and a dozen copycats. Its revenue estimates are posted on several teardown sites, and there were earlier local products on Android. The template and the holiday playbook are worth learning, but chasing the app itself isn't worth it. Whispers in small circles

A small studio in Ankara, Turkey copied the "a Bible verse on your lock screen, then a subscription" template and applied it to Islam word for word. The iOS version launched two weeks before Ramadan in 2026, and a few Turkish-language TikTok alt accounts pushed it to the most-rated Quran widget app on the App Store. The Android version, released in Sep 30, reached 72k installs in five weeks. The template really does make money, but this path is now crowded with people copying it.

A video with 1.02M views, and the comments are asking "what about Android?"

In 2026 Feb 14, about four or five days before Ramadan began, the TikTok account @kuranwidgets posted a 12-second vertical video: an iPhone lock screen with a line of scripture added below the time, next to the next prayer time and a Ramadan countdown. The caption is one sentence in Turkish: "Kilit ekranına ayet ekle, namaz vakitlerini takip et, Ramazan geri sayımını takip et", meaning add a verse to your lock screen, track prayer times, and track the Ramadan countdown.

By Nov 6, the video had 1.03M views, 19k likes, and nearly 5,000 saves. Among the most-liked comments, one was from the official account: "The app is called Kur'an Widgets, the download link is in our profile." Another asked "what's the app called?", and a third said: "Android için nasıl indirebilirim acaba" (how can I download it on Android?). Two days later, another post from the same account (640k views) had comments like "Android gelsin" (bring out an Android version) and "ben bulamadım play store de" (I couldn't find it on the Play Store).

At that point it was iOS only. Android users waited more than seven months before the Android version launched in Sep 30.

What it is

An app that puts Quran verses, prayers (dua) and Islamic sayings on your home screen and lock screen, so you see one every time you check your phone. It piles on a lot of features: prayer times, qibla direction, mosque finder, tasbih counter, zakat calculator, stories of the prophets, Islamic animated wallpapers, and verse notifications at intervals you choose. The store page says Premium gives you "all themes and categories, premium widgets, unlimited reminders", with in-app purchases from $3.49 to $19.99 (Google Play, 11-06).

It makes money the standard way subscription apps do: after opening it, you go through a long series of onboarding questions (the paywall teardown site mobileappdesign.io recorded 20 onboarding pages), and only then does the paywall appear.

The developer is called Cloud Game Studios on Play and CLOUD STUDIOS Teknoloji Yatırım A.Ş. on the App Store, with an address in Ankara.

Who it copied

The name already gives it away: "Quran Widgets: Verses & Duas" is aimed at "Bible Widgets: Verses & Prayer".

The two Bible apps already proved that "scripture on the lock screen + long onboarding + subscription" makes money. Muslim users are more numerous, but there are few paid apps for them. This team's move was to swap the content for Islamic content.

Why this one broke out

It landed two weeks before Ramadan. The iOS version launched in Feb 5, and Ramadan began in mid-February. The Ramadan countdown, iftar and suhoor times were built directly into the widgets, and the TikTok captions were all written around Ramadan. @kuranwidgets' most-viewed posts all went up between Feb 13 and 16: 1.03M, 642k, 330k, 142k (TikTok, pulled 11-06). Once Ramadan ended in Mar 10, the account stopped posting.

Several alt accounts posted the same line. Besides @kuranwidgets, there were @app.kuranwidgets and an English account @jonan.quranwidgets. The captions were nearly identical, and every profile bio said "Uygulamayı İndir" (Download the App). The method was lean: record a screen capture of the lock screen, add one line, and post it from several accounts over and over.

Turkey first, then a dozen-plus languages. On the App Store, the Turkish store has 20,800 ratings averaging 4.6 stars, Indonesia 13,688, and the US 5,904 (App Store, 11-06). Malaysia, France, Uzbekistan and Egypt each have three or four thousand. The title was localized into more than a dozen languages (Widgets du Coran, Виджеты Корана, 꾸란 위젯...). It hit #1 on the Indonesian category Top Grossing chart, and #1 on the Free chart in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

Android was a second wave for the same audience. The Android version has the same name, icon and paywall. It caught the people who had already heard of it in Turkey from the iOS version and who had asked "what about Android?" in the comments. On Google Play, installs read 10-29 at 33k, 11-06 at 72k, and 7 days added 39k. Ratings add about 220 a day. 11-06 ranks #8 on the Turkish Lifestyle Free chart and #10 on Top Grossing, and on the same day it charted in 17 countries. It hit #40 on the UK Lifestyle Top Grossing chart (Google Play, 11-06).

It is probably still running paid acquisition. One one-star Android review says: "Herşeyi de paralı yapmayın yahu, paralıysa da reklamlarda paralı yazsın da indirmeyelim" (Don't make everything paid. If it's paid, at least say so in the ads, and we wouldn't download it). That suggests at least some users came from ads. How much was spent and where can't be checked from outside (inference).

Where the money comes from and how much it makes

Only outside estimates exist. mobileappdesign.io puts iOS revenue at about $65K a month and about 200k installs a month. screensdesign.com estimates about $70K, and appsprint.app about $50K. All three count iOS only, are estimates, and the team has never published figures.

What can be seen on Android: five weeks after launch, it has held steady at #10–11 on the Turkish Lifestyle Top Grossing chart.

What users are complaining about

Almost all the reviews on Google Play are in Turkish, averaging about 3.5 stars. The one-star reviews all complain about one thing: payment, especially being asked to pay only after going through every onboarding step.

  • "her şey iyi güzel de bütün adımları yaptırıp sonunda ücret istenmesi çok saçma", meaning: everything's fine, but making you go through every step and only then asking for money is absurd (10-19,1 stars)
  • "Allah'ın kelamı parayla satılmaz", meaning: God's words shouldn't be sold for money (10-25,3 stars)
  • "Bu tarz hizmetleri diğer din mensupları ücretsiz sunuyor", meaning: followers of other religions offer this kind of service for free (10-21,1 stars)
  • "senelik üyelik alıp başka telefona geçiş yaparsanız o üyeliği kullanamıyorsunuz", meaning: if you buy an annual membership and then switch phones, you can't use it anymore (10-26,1 stars)
  • "uygulamamı iptal etmek istedim neden iptal etmiyorsunuz", meaning: I tried to cancel my subscription, why won't you let me cancel? (10-26,1 stars)

Under that 1.02M-view TikTok from Ramadan, someone also wrote just "Ücretliymiş, sağolun" (So it's paid, thanks). The complaints are real, but the ratings keep climbing and the chart rankings keep rising, so the paid model holds up. The backlash against charging for religious content in Turkey is real, though. Problems like no restore after switching phones and hard-to-find cancellation pile up into refund requests and bad reviews.

Who it's competing with

This niche is already crowded, and it's crowded from both directions:

  • Earlier ones. On Android, Turkish-language Quran verse widgets like Ayat Online - Hourly Widgets (2025-8.43M installs) and Connectinno's Müslim: Ramazan Kur'an Widgets (2025-1.28M installs) came out before it, and the latter now adds only about 100 in 7 days. Among general Muslim apps, Muslim Pro has 149M installs, with widgets as a side feature. Deen Buddy had a "verse on the lock screen" TikTok tutorial in March 2025 that got 2.56M views, so people had already been taught this use case.
  • Copycats. On iOS: Comma Labs' "Quran Widget - Verses & Duas" (2026-03, nearly the same name), Nizam (2026-04, about 7,400 ratings), Nurlu, Nuraly, Nur - Kuran Widgets, Hüccet, and IYONYA's Muslim Widgets: Quran (2026-08). On Android there is one also called "Quran widgets verses duas" (com.islamicwidget.app) and Umra Tech's Quran Widget (2026-437k installs). Most are run by individual Turkish developers or small companies.
  • It has also tried the reverse. 2026-07 made a Bible version, My Bible: Widgets & Prayers, which has only about 200 ratings worldwide so far. On the Bible side, the same playbook didn't take off.

Its revenue estimates are posted on several paywall teardown sites, where subscription app builders can see them.

If it were you

Verdict: Stop building Quran widgets. This niche already has a top app with 66k ratings and a dozen copycats, and on Android there are local products that came out before it. What's worth taking is the playbook: "faith content × lock-screen widget × long onboarding + subscription", combined with launching around religious holidays and short videos from alt accounts.

Who it suits: A subscription app team of 1–2 people that has built onboarding flows with a paywall and can run Meta or TikTok ads. Ideally the team belongs to, or knows well, a faith or language community that this template hasn't reached yet (such as Hindus, Orthodox Christians, or a language-specific Muslim market where nothing is yet established. Check the store yourself, since we haven't verified each one; this is inference).

Who it doesn't suit: Anyone who wants to compete head-on in Turkish, English or Indonesian Quran widgets, anyone uncomfortable charging for religious content or unable to handle a flood of one-star reviews, and anyone who can build features but not distribution. There is no technical barrier here, and a team could build this in a month.

How to do it: Make the widget and lock screen the main entry point, and fold other features (time, reminders, counters) into the widget. Keep the onboarding flow, but fix the two things it got criticized for: make clear which features are free before the paywall appears, and make subscriptions restorable across devices with an easy-to-find cancel option. Don't wait seven months for Android. Once iOS works, launch Android the same week with the same name and icon.

How to get users: Copy what it did: open two or three small local-language accounts, post lock-screen videos with one line of copy, and keep it up for two weeks. Put the keyword "<religion> widget" right in the store title, and translate the title for each country. Note that its spike came from Ramadan, so your community needs its own timing hook.

When to start: Work backward from the next holiday, and go live at least two weeks before it. For example, Ramadan starts in early February 2027, so if you want to target the Muslim market with localized builds, ship before late December. Diwali and Easter work the same way.

Signs you misread it: ① Its Android version stalls at around 100k installs for a month or two and drops out of the top 20 in Turkey's Lifestyle Top Grossing, which means the paywall doesn't hold up outside Ramadan; ② followers like Nizam show flat ratings for several months, meaning that even with a new name, latecomers can't get volume; ③ the community you picked already has two or three "X Widgets: Verses & Prayer"-style apps charting in the store, in which case you're already late.

One line

This is the Android port of a small studio in Ankara, Turkey, CLOUD STUDIOS Teknoloji Yatırım A.Ş. (listed on Play as Cloud Game Studios). The iOS version launched 2026-02-05, ahead of Ramadan (starting mid-2026-02), and got its first wave of traffic from a Turkish-language TikTok / Instagram account network. It now has about 66k ratings across all countries, making it the most-rated Quran widget app on the App Store. The product takes the proven Christian "Bible widget" template (Bible Widgets, Bible Path) and transplants it to Islam: a verse on the lock or home screen, plus prayer times, qibla direction, dhikr counters and zakat tools, with a long onboarding flow ending in a hard paywall. The Android version on 2026-09-30 rides on a template and brand iOS had already proven, and it holds roughly the top 10 on Turkey's Lifestyle free and grossing charts.

1. Data

Android (library googleplay, app_snap / chart_rank)

  • Installs: 10-29 went from 33,184,11-06 to 72,083; 7-day new installs: 38,899. Rating 11-03 was 3,117,11-06 and is now 3,795, adding about 220 per day.
  • Charts: In Turkey's Lifestyle Top Free chart, ranked #7–10 from 10-29 to 11-06; Top Grossing #10–11. In the UK's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, #36–42; Top Free #55–62. Indonesia and Malaysia's Top Free charts sat between #34–82. Charted in 17 countries that day.
  • In-app purchases $3.49–$19.99, subscription model, store page lists "Premium: all themes and categories, premium widgets, unlimited reminders". Version 1.3, last updated 2026-10-14.
  • All 41 reviews captured in the library are from Turkey, averaging 3.5 stars. Almost all the negative ones complain about the paywall: "Made me go through every step and only then asked for money, ridiculous", "selling religious feelings for money", "if it's paid, say so in the ad, then we wouldn't have downloaded it".

iOS version (library appstore, app_profile, id 6758387571)

  • Launched 2026-02-05; combined ratings across countries are about 65,500–66,800, with a combined 7-day growth rate of about 3,700. By country: Turkey 20,680, Indonesia 13,636, US 5,892, Malaysia 4,218, France 3,999, Uzbekistan 3,895, Egypt 3,289.
  • Category charts: Indonesia best_cat_rank is #1 grossing; Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan #1 free; Turkey #3 free; Malaysia #4 grossing. App Store Tracker logged it hitting #1 on the Kazakhstan Reference free chart (appstoretracker.com).
  • The app name has been localized into a dozen-plus languages (Widgets du Coran, Виджеты Корана, 꾸란 위젯……), which is why it spread so widely worldwide.
  • Third-party estimates: mobileappdesign.io puts iOS monthly revenue at about $65K (+44% month over month) and monthly installs at about 200k; screensdesign.com estimates revenue of $70k and 200k installs; appsprint.app estimates about $50K/month. These are estimates and unverified.

Takeaway: this is a niche with a ready-made template and crowded competition. On Android, at least Ayat Online and Connectinno were making Turkish-language Islamic widgets before it. Its late rise on Android came not from new demand, but from building a leader on iOS first, then carrying the same product and monetization over.

3. Growth tactics

  1. In-house TikTok / Instagram account network (confirmed, mainly during the iOS period): TikHub found three accounts: @kuranwidgets (46 videos, 48.6k likes in total), @app.kuranwidgets (14 videos), and the English-language @jonan.quranwidgets. Profile bios all say "Uygulamayı İndir" (download the app), and the English account links straight to iOS. Video captions are nearly word-for-word identical: "Kilit ekranına ayet ekle, namaz vakitlerini takip et, Ramazan geri sayımını takip et" (add a verse to your lock screen, track prayer times, follow the Ramadan countdown). The hits cluster around 2026-02-13 to 02-20, before and during Ramadan: single videos at 640k, 450k, 330k, 230k and 90k views. The latest was posted on 2026-03-10 and then they went quiet. The Instagram @kuranwidgets account posted the same Reels, with "Download from the App Store" in the copy. This wave hit the religious calendar moment exactly.
  2. Paid acquisition (possible, unconfirmed): an Android user wrote in a negative review, "if it's paid, say so in the ad, then we wouldn't have downloaded it", suggesting at least some users came from ads. But our Meta ad library only tracks advertisers on its list, and this developer isn't on it. Searches by package name and iOS id turned up nothing, so spend is unknown. Turkish subscription apps generally rely on Meta paid acquisition to break even (Codeway is Meta's official case study), and this one probably does too, but that's unverified.
  3. Store search / keywords (likely): the name is "Quran Widgets: Verses & Duas", directly claiming the search term "quran widget", with titles localized by country. Within a month of the Android launch in Turkey it held a top 10,10-29 Lifestyle spot; since then it has added about 2,000–5,000 per day. The curve is step-shaped (caused by Play tier updates), with no spike of the kind a chart-climb produces, which looks more like sustained paid acquisition plus search.
  4. Cross-platform brand transfer: the Turkish iOS app has over 20k ratings, which first built awareness of the name "Kur'an Widgets" in Turkey. The Android version uses the same name and icon, so it caught Android users' searches.
  5. Media / X / Reddit: x-radar found 90 posts mentioning "Quran Widgets" in the past 0 days. The only ranking-change post was from App Store Tracker's automated account (x.com/appstoretracker/status/2032489390740566412). No press coverage found.

4. Why it took off

  • The template is proven: in the Bible widget category, Bible Widgets (140k ratings) and Bible Path (80k ratings) have already shown that "lock-screen scripture + onboarding + subscription" makes money. This transplants that to the Muslim market, which has more people and fewer paid apps.
  • Timing is tied to Ramadan: iOS launched 2026-02-05, and Ramadan was two weeks away. The Ramadan countdown and iftar / suhoor times went straight into the widget, and TikTok copy is written around Ramadan. Traffic and willingness to pay peak just before a religious observance.
  • Starting in Turkey: iOS has 20k ratings in Turkey, about a third of the global total. The team is local, so Turkish-language content and ads came easily. Only after that did they spread to Indonesia, Malaysia, Central Asia, France and the UK with a dozen-plus languages.
  • Monetization is hard-edged: a long onboarding flow plus a hard paywall (mobileappdesign logged 20 onboarding screens), priced at $3.49–$19.99. On Android many negative reviews complain about the price, yet ratings keep climbing and it stays in Turkey's top 10 grossing, which shows the model works.
  • The Android version is a second harvest: it was already a top earner on iOS, and after launching on Android it hit 33k installs in a month, then 72k a week later, using the same brand and the same product.

5. Differentiation

  • Compared with general Muslim apps (Muslim Pro etc.), it leads with widgets and lock-screen aesthetics. Prayer times and other features are folded into the widget, selling the feeling of "every time you check your phone, it's a verse" rather than a tool.
  • Compared with similar Islamic widget apps (Ayat Online, Connectinno, Quran Tiles, etc.): more features (prayer tracking, qibla, mosques, zakat, prophet stories, meditation, Q&A, holiday blessing cards), wider localization, and more aggressive monetization.
  • Verdict: the product difference is small; this is essentially a template ported over. It works mainly for three reasons: the category transplant from Christianity to Islam, the timing around Ramadan, and local distribution in Turkey (a matrix of small accounts plus high-probability paid acquisition). As for the Android version, the real reason is that the brand and funnel already proven on iOS were copied straight over.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: it's "circulating in small circles." The founders haven't disclosed revenue, and no media outlet or big X account has written about it. But the teardown sites mobileappdesign, screensdesign, and appsprint, which analyze paywalls, all list it and estimate revenue of about $50–70K/month. Peers building subscription apps will see those sites.
  • There are already plenty of copycats:
    • On iOS there's Comma Labs' "Quran Widget - Verses & Duas" (2026-03-23, with a nearly identical name), Nizam (2026-04), Nurlu (2026-03), Nuraly (2026-05), Nur - Kuran Widgets (2026-05), Hüccet (2026-08), and IYONYA's Muslim Widgets (2026-08), mostly from Turkish individual developers or small companies.
    • On Android there's com.islamicwidget.app, also called "Quran widgets verses duas"; there's also Umra Tech's Quran Widget (2026-437k installs).
    • It has also copied in reverse once: 2026-07 released My Bible: Widgets & Prayers, which has only about 200 ratings worldwide, suggesting the return to the Bible niche hasn't taken off.

7. What to borrow

  • The template of "religion/faith × widgets × subscription" can be ported across religions and languages. The key is finding an audience of similar size that hasn't been templatized yet (for example Hindus, Buddhists, Orthodox Christians, or language-segmented Muslim markets).
  • Ride religious calendar moments (Ramadan, Christmas, Diwali) by building holiday countdowns directly into the widget.
  • Use several small accounts to batch-post the same "how to add X to your lock screen" tutorial short videos. The cost is low.
  • Validate payments on iOS first, then port to Android, using the same name and icon to capture the brand search already built.
  • Risk: charging for religious content draws strong backlash in Turkey (many Android 1-star reviews), and reviews and refunds could become a long-term problem for 1.

8. Uncertain

  • Android acquisition channels and scale: Meta, TikTok, and Google ad libraries don't list this one, so no ad spend can be found.
  • On Android, the "2026-09-30 listed" date comes from Play and may have been reset; AppBrain shows this developer account has existed for 2024 years, but this is the only App it has.
  • Revenue is only a third-party estimate (about $50–70K/month, iOS only), unverified.
  • The parent company also has an app called Clip AI (AI video generation). Its website claims 10M downloads and 15 products, which don't match what's visible in the databases, and who is behind it is unclear.
