"I want my old contacts back": a dialer wrapped in a desktop shell, installed on 510k European phones in three and a half months
What it is An ordinary dialer and contacts app, wrapped in a "set as default home screen" shell. The home screen shows weather, news, app recommendations and ads.
Why it took off Once it becomes the default home screen, every unlock shows ads. Each user is worth far more than an ordinary tool, so it can afford paid acquisition in Sweden, France and Australia. The name looks like the system contacts app, so people who aren't tech-savvy install it easily.
CHow you could approach it Stop building dialers and SMS apps. Pick a system-level tool people open every day that hasn't been wrapped yet, and build a genuinely useful desktop version. Use Google App Ads to buy installs in high-value countries with low chart barriers. This works only if you have paid acquisition experience and can afford to get banned once.

An Android app called "Contacts - Phone Call Launcher" does almost the same things as the phone and contacts apps that come with a phone. It launched in Jul 17, reached 6k total installs by Nov 513, and charts in the communication categories of 14 countries including Sweden, Poland and France. It has no new features. It earns through a "set as default home screen" shell and ads. Below: what this playbook is, where the money comes from, why it's already crowded, and whether you can still follow it.
A review 26 people marked helpful
In Aug 26 2026, a user named Susan Frei left a review on Google Play saying:
confusing - don't want new contacts, want my old contacts back (Confusing. I don't want new contacts, I want my old ones back.)
By November, this review had 26 "helpful" votes. Another from Oct 7 was blunter: "Can't use anything, I factory-reset my phone." Someone else in the comments went looking for a banking app: "Can't find Standard Bank anymore, I need to pay."
These people weren't scammed out of money. They installed an app called "Contacts" with an icon that looks like the system contacts app, tapped "set as default" a few times, and then their whole home screen changed. That is the business model.
What it is
An ordinary dialer and contacts app: keypad, call history, restyled incoming-call screen, quick-reply texts on incoming calls, callback reminders, blocking and dual SIM. The store page is clear: the first thing it asks is that you "set it as the default Home app," and a swipe right shows the contacts. The developer's website FAQ items 6 and 7 explain "why it needs to be set as the default phone app" and "why it needs to be set as the default home screen."
Once set as the home screen, the screen shows weather (hence the location permission), news, "app recommendations from developers or trusted partners," and ads (FAQ items 12, 13, 14 and 17). There are no in-app purchases and no subscriptions. The store page says "contains ads."
The developer is EverCoreTech. Its website sits on a domain called nonstoplocalnews.com, and the contact is a gmail address. Its Google Play developer page currently lists only this one app.
How it grew
Daily installs estimated by AppstoreSpy, and cumulative installs from Google Play:
| Timeline | Total installs | Average per day in that period |
|---|---|---|
| Listed 7-17 | 0 | |
| 8-11 | About 9,400 | About 400 |
| 9-01 | About 53k | About 2,000 |
| 9-17 | About 240k | About 12k |
| 10-01 | About 306k | About 4,700 |
| 11-06 | 513k | About 5,800 |
The peak was the first half of September, with over ten thousand in a single day. From October on, it has held steady at about 5,000 to 7,000 a day (estimated). Ratings grow by 25 to 40 a day, reaching 11-06 in total with a 2,353 score shown on the UK store page of 4.1 stars. The star distribution is lopsided: 1,610 five-star ratings, 221 one-star, and only 19 two-star (11-06).
This curve doesn't look like word of mouth. Word of mouth builds slowly and occasionally explodes after a viral video. This one jumped sharply in September and then leveled off at a fixed number, which looks like someone adjusting the budget (inference).
Where users come from
It isn't findable on X, there are no related videos on TikTok, and there's no press coverage. The clues we can see all point to paid acquisition:
Charting countries here are the "expensive" ones. 11-06 It is on the Communication Top Free chart in 14 countries: Sweden 17, Poland 26, Spain 35, France 36, Australia 38, Brazil 39, Italy 41, Canada 46, UK 49, Germany 52, Singapore 58, Mexico 75, US 79, South Africa 127. It's absent from India, Indonesia, Nigeria and the Philippines, which are the biggest organic-download markets for dialer apps. Similar dialers that grow through organic search usually peak in India, Nigeria and the Middle East. This one is the reverse, and the most likely explanation is that someone is deliberately buying Google app ads in high-value countries (inference; not yet verified in the Google Ads Transparency Center).
Low bar on category charts. In countries like Sweden and Poland, a few thousand installs a day is enough to reach the top 20 of the communication free chart. Once charted, it also picks up extra organic traffic from chart browsing.
The name is the keyword. The title is "Contacts - Phone Call Launcher" and the package name is contacts.home.launcher.calls.phone.dialer, packing in contacts, phone, call, launcher and dialer. For an older user searching the store for "contacts" or "phone," it looks just like the system app.
Where the money comes from
It relies almost entirely on ads, but not the usual tool-app ads:
- An ordinary tool app is opened once or twice a day and shows one ad per session. A default home screen stays in the foreground every time the phone unlocks. Weather, news, recommendation slots and ads can get dozens of impressions a day, and the system won't kill it in the background.
- The dialer is also a high-frequency entry point. Stacking both means each user can be monetized many more times per day than with an ordinary tool.
- Users in Sweden, France and Australia carry high ad CPMs.
That's why it can afford Western paid acquisition. How much each user is worth and how long payback takes aren't visible from outside (unverified). Among the reviews, the ones saying "confusing" and "want my old contacts back" likely include people who uninstall quickly. Those who stay are the ones who can't work out how to switch back, or don't care.
Who it's competing with
A lot. EverCoreTech didn't invent this. It's a template that had already taken shape on Google Play by 2026.
| Product | Developer | Launched | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messenger: SMS Home Launcher | JB DEVELOPER APP | 2025-11 | 3.04M installs, +7k in the last 77 days, UK communication chart #17 |

Data: Google Play and AppBrain, as of 11-06.
Note the bolded line: an app with a name that's identical launched more than a month earlier and was pulled at the end of August. EverCoreTech is itself a copycat.
And "a desktop shell on top" is no longer only used for communication apps. Over the past six months, the fastest-growing new launchers with "Launcher" in the name include the shooting game "Shooting Skies Launcher" (live 29 days, 800k installs, +636k in 7 days), "Arrow Launcher" (+450k in 7 days), find-my-phone, settings, volume, cleaner, PDF and beauty-camera launchers, plus a batch of iOS "Liquid Glass" lookalike desktops. In some regions, search snippets for EverCoreTech's developer page showed "Arrow Puzzle Escape, Launcher" and "QR & Barcode Scanner, Launcher"; they are not visible on the English page now (whether pulled or only sold in some regions is unverified).
Its weaknesses
- Nothing different for users. The features overlap with Google's own Phone (5.9B installs) and Contacts (6.7B), and with dozens of reskinned dialers. Its only difference is the business structure, and anyone can copy that.
- It sits on the policy line. A name that looks like a system app, prompts to replace the default home screen, and ads and app recommendations on the desktop all brush against Google Play's rules on "deceptive behavior" and "disruptive ads." The same-named app was already pulled and lived just over two months.
- Growth has peaked. It topped 10,000 a day in September; it's now 5,000 to 6,000 a day and has been propped up by paid acquisition (inferred).
If it were you
Verdict: you can learn a tactic from it, but copying it isn't worth it. "Dialer + desktop shell + ads + paid acquisition on low-competition high-value country charts" is already run by dozens of companies, and same-named products have each been pulled once. It isn't well known only because people who build these don't talk about it publicly, not because nobody builds them.
Who it suits: a small team that already ships utility apps on Google Play, has dozens of developer accounts and Google app-ad experience, and can calculate how many ads each user sees before uninstalling. For them, it's just wrapping an existing utility in another shell.
Who it doesn't suit: solo indie devs with one developer account who can't afford a single ban; anyone who hasn't run Google app ads and is counting on organic installs; anyone who wants to build a product users genuinely love. This business's core user is "someone who can't figure out how to switch back," so reviews and retention won't be on your side.
How to do it: if you must, don't build another dialer or SMS app, since those are packed. Pick a system-level tool that hasn't been reskinned yet and gets opened many times a day. Looking at the list, communication, settings, volume, cleaner, scanner, PDF and flashlight apps are all taken. The desktop itself has to be genuinely useful, with a clear path back to the original home screen in one step. Don't disguise the name or icon as a system app. You'll earn less, but you'll last longer than the same-named app.
How to acquire users: use Google app ads. Start with low-competition category charts in high-value countries (Nordics, Eastern Europe, Iberia), spend a small budget, and see whether a few thousand installs a day can push you into the top 20 of the category. Then check how many times the people who stay unlock the phone each day.
Deadline: there's no holiday window; the window is Google's policy. Desktop shells spread this widely in 2026, and another large cleanup could come at any time. If you're going to do it, work out the numbers before the next mass removal, and stop if they don't add up.
What would show this read is wrong: (1) over the next month or two, it and the other Gworth Sol and JB DEVELOPER apps stay live and installs keep rising, meaning policy risk is smaller than assumed and this path is worth more than C; (2) conversely, it or several apps on the same template disappear together, meaning the window has closed; (3) someone builds a "desktop shell" with a high rating, no "I want my old launcher back" reviews, and survives six months. That would be a legitimate version of this playbook, and worth studying closely for how it monetizes.

Why Contacts - Phone Call Launcher (EverCoreTech) gets traction
Google Play, package com.contacts.home.launcher.calls.phone.dialer, category COMMUNICATION, store launch 2026-07-17. Research date 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
It's an ordinary dialer / contacts app wrapped in a "set as default home (Launcher)" shell. Nothing new in features. It gets traction because of a template that was already established on Google Play in 2026: a utility app with a Launcher layer to capture the home-screen entry point, monetize through ads (plus app recommendations, weather, news), and buy traffic into high-value Western "Communication" category charts. EverCoreTech didn't invent this category. It's one of the better executors of the same template.
1. Data (source: our googleplay database, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Total installs rose from 467,171 (10-29) to 513,071 (11-06), up 8 over 45,900 days, about 5.7K a day; the store's install tier jumped from 11-03 from 100K+ to 500K+. AppBrain's figures: 170k downloads over the last 30 days, averaging 5.5K a day (appbrain.com app page).
- Rating count rose from 2,114 to 2,353, adding 25 to 40 reviews a day, average rating moving from 4.27 to 4.32. The histogram (1 to 5 stars) is [221, 19, 154, 318, 1610]. 1 stars is about 9%, 2 stars is nearly zero: a bimodal distribution.
- The country spread is unusual: all 14 countries where it charted are high-value or upper-mid-value markets. Its best communication free-chart ranks by country: Sweden 17, Poland 23, Spain 30, France 35, Brazil 37, Australia 37, Singapore 37, Italy 38, Canada 46, UK 49, Germany 51, Mexico 68, US 70, South Africa 113. India, Indonesia, Nigeria and the Philippines, the largest organic markets for dialer apps, don't appear at all. In our database, comparable dialers (Truecaller, Simple Dialer, various caller-ID apps) rank best mostly in in / ng / ae / sa.
- Monetization:
ad_supported = True, no in-app purchases (offers_iap = False). The official FAQ says there are ads, and it recommends the developer's own or partners' other apps; weather and news require an internet connection (nonstoplocalnews.com/Android/FAQContacts.html). - Updated in version 1.0.9,10-26. The developer has only this one app in our database; developer website domain nonstoplocalnews.com, contact email a gmail address [email protected].

Dialers / contacts apps without a Launcher (same function)
- Big-company built-ins: Google Contacts (6.69B installs), Phone by Google (5.94B), plus system dialers from Samsung, OPPO and other phone makers. They ship on the phone, so no download is needed.
- Established third-party apps: Truecaller (1.9B), CallApp (430M), Eyecon (150M), Simple Dialer (4.86M, open source), Right Dialer (19.4M).
- A large batch of reskinned tools: Contacts: Phone Dialer & Calls (Featured Festival, 7.61M), Contacts: Phone Calls & Dialer (o16i Apps, 3.22M), Show Caller ID & Phone Dialer (Vasundhara, 1.28M), and others.
The same tactic moved to other categories
The Launcher shell was a trend on Google Play in 2026. In our database, the fastest-growing apps with "Launcher" in the name, launched in the last 200 days, include: Shooting Skies Launcher (Hero Fighting Games, live 29 days, 800k installs, +636k in 7 days), Arrow Launcher (+450k in 7 days), Find My Phone Launcher, Settings Home, Volume Control Home, JunkCleaner Launcher, PDF Pocket: Launcher & Reader, Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher, plus a batch of "OS 27 / Liquid Glass" iOS-style desktops. EverCoreTech's own developer page has also shown "Arrow Puzzle Escape, Launcher" and "QR & Barcode Scanner, Launcher" (search snippets from the de_CH and fr_CA versions of the Google Play developer page; on appagg, its Arrow game is the 1.0.0 version, launched "9 days ago"). The English developer page we scraped now shows only Contacts. Whether the other two were pulled or are only listed in some regions is unverified.
Conclusion: lots of competitors, a commoditized template niche. Its differences from peers come down to execution: name, store assets, and which countries it targets.
3. Growth tactics
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| paid acquisition, most likely Google App Campaigns, targeting Europe, the US and Brazil/Mexico | All 14 charted countries are high-value markets; India, Nigeria and other high-organic markets are missing, which is the opposite of the usual pattern for dialer apps that win on search. Daily installs hold steady at 5K to 6K, not like random organic exposure. Our Google / Meta / TikTok ad libraries have no record of it (it's not on our tracked list, not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertised). | No (inference) |
| Store search ASO | The title and package name are stuffed with contacts / phone / call / launcher / dialer; searching "phone call launcher" on Google gives a Play link with utm_source=google organic. | Partly confirmed |
| Content, creators, social | X (x-radar, last 90 days) returns nothing for it or its developer; TikTok search shows no related content. | Confirmed none |
| Media, celebrities | Jina and Exa find no coverage at all; only data sites like AppBrain, APK sites and similarweb index it. | Confirmed none |
| The amplifier for retention and revenue per user: default home screen plus default dialer. | Users are nudged to set it as default Home and default phone app (store description FAQ items 6, 7); the home screen shows weather, news, app recommendations and ads (FAQ items 12, 13, 14, 17). | Confirmed |
Who its users are: the reviews AppBrain shows mostly come from English speakers who seem older and not very comfortable with phones, e.g. "Can't find the Standard Bank app, I need to pay", "I want my old contacts back", "Where do I put my bank number?" So users are pulled in by a name that looks like a system app (contacts / phone); after install the home screen gets replaced, and some people don't even know how it happened. This audience generates high ad revenue in high-value countries, and the home screen is the entry point they see every time they unlock, so LTV can cover European and US acquisition costs.
4. Why it took off
- Entry point to revenue: the launcher is the screen opened most often on a phone. As the default home screen it stays in the foreground and isn't killed by the system, so weather, news, recommendation slots and ads get shown many times a day. The dialer itself is also opened often, so together each user can be monetized far more times per day than a typical utility app.
- Name looks like a system app: names like "Contacts" and "Phone Call" with matching icons are confusing to users who aren't familiar with phones, which helps both ad conversion and store search conversion. The confusion in the reviews shows exactly this.
- Buying the communication category charts in high-value countries: the Top Free communication chart in countries like Sweden and Poland has a low bar, so a few thousand installs a day can reach the top 20, and charting brings extra browse traffic. Users in these countries also command higher ad CPMs.
- Proven template, easy to copy: over the past year the same "SMS / Dialer + Launcher" formula has already worked for several developers (JB DEVELOPER's SMS Home Launcher has 3M installs). EverCoreTech is a follower but a tidier one: full features (quick replies, callback reminders, blocking, dual SIM), an FAQ page, and a rating of 4.3.
5. Differentiation
For users there is almost no differentiation. Its features overlap heavily with Google's built-in phone and contacts, and it is much the same as other clones of the template. The real "difference" is commercial: the dialer-plus-default-launcher combination produces high-frequency exposure and retention. That structural advantage is why it works, but it is not unique to EverCoreTech; competitors can copy it easily, and many already are.
6. Visibility, copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No media coverage, no discussion on X or TikTok, no disclosed revenue, only data sites index it.
- Copycats: there are already many apps with the same name and category (see table above). One same-named app was removed on 2026-08, earlier than this one was published, so it is also one of the followers.
7. What others can learn
- The "high-frequency tool + default home screen" structure: turn a system-level tool (dialer, SMS, settings, volume, flashlight) into a launcher and monetize the feed and recommendation slots on the home screen.
- When buying installs, avoid the overall charts in competitive countries and target category charts with low entry barriers in high-value countries (e.g. communication charts in Nordic and Eastern European countries).
- The same developer account batch-produces the template (Contacts, Arrow game, QR scanner all with a Launcher added).
- Risk: this approach sits on the edge of Google Play's policies on deceptive behavior and disruptive ads; similar apps have already been removed (the same-named Istrix App lasted only two months). Confusion in user reviews could become one-star reviews and complaints later.
8. Still unclear
- Which ad channels were used, how much was spent, and the payback period are unverified (none of the three ad libraries indexed it; you can search by developer name in the Google Ads Transparency Center).
- Which ad or recommendation networks power the weather, news and app recommendations, and whether there are background SDKs such as bandwidth sharing, are unverified.
- The developer's real identity and country (a gmail address, and a website domain borrowing the brand of a US local station, "NonStop Local") are unverified; whether EverCoreTech's other launcher products are still live is also unverified.
- Our database only has 9 days of data, so we can't yet tell whether install growth is accelerating or slowing down.
