A five-star reviewer says "it's terrible": how a contacts app turned into a home screen and gets thousands of installs a day

What it is An Android dialer and contacts app that asks you to set it as your phone's default home screen and makes money from ads.

Why it took off Once it's the home screen, every press of Home returns you to it, so opens and ad impressions surge and retention is high. Continuous paid acquisition then brings in thousands of users a day, mostly older people who won't change phone settings.

CHow you could follow Don't copy this shell: dozens of teams already run the same play, and the platform could tighten rules at any time. If you do build in this space, take the idea of "getting into a high-frequency entry point" and build a real senior-friendly home screen that charges family members.

Grade C: the play works, but the space is crowded (over 35 comparable communication apps, and dozens more new ones each month across categories). This app is itself a follower. It relies on a gray tactic the platform could crack down on at any time, the product itself has no real difference, and it isn't worth it for a small team to follow. Few people know about it yet

An Android app called Contacts - Phone Calls, Home, published in August, has reached 197K installs by Nov 6, and in the last week it has been gaining about 4,700 a day. Its features are indistinguishable from the phone's built-in contacts and dialer. It does only one thing right: it gets you to set it as your phone's default home screen. Below we cover why this makes money, who its users are, how many others are already doing it, and why we don't recommend copying it.

A five-star review liked by 46 people

In 2026 Oct 19, a US user gave this app five stars on Google Play, but wrote:

APPALLING. My. mobile. will not let me send. texts or. make. calls, whats. app has. gone. why. i dont know

(Terrible. My phone can't send texts or make calls, and WhatsApp is gone. Why, I don't know.)

The review has 46 "helpful" votes and ranks first among US reviews. Further down: Sep 8, "Too complicated, I'm 83 years old, I can't figure it out"; Oct 26, "My contacts are gone from my phone, can't find them!!", also five stars; Nov 2, "Can't get into my email, and can't find my contacts." The most-liked French review (26 likes) says: "I'm going to try uninstalling, this app has taken over my whole phone." Another says "Can't delete it... meh." (Google Play US and FR reviews, as of 11-06)

These reviews already say most of what there is to say about who uses it and how it keeps them.

What it actually is

The store listing's feature list is ordinary: dialer, contacts, call log, themes for the incoming call screen, quick replies, callback reminders, blocking, backup. Google's built-in Contacts has 6.69B installs and Phone by Google 5.94B; this app doesn't exceed either on any feature.

The key is this sentence in the description: "Set Contacts - Phone Calls, Home as your default home screen, and swipe right to reach your contacts." It then adds how to switch back: "To restore your original home screen, go to your device's Default Home app settings."

Setting it as the default home screen (called a Launcher on Android) means every time you press Home, or close another app, you land on its interface. A dialer you open a few times a week becomes something opened dozens or hundreds of times a day, and the system generally won't kill the default home screen as a background process.

Where the money comes from

It's free with no in-app purchases, and the store page is labeled "Contains ads" (Google Play, 11-06). Opens are ad slots: every return to the home screen is another chance to show an ad. Similar "Home wrapper" apps have drawn user complaints that "every app I open shows an ad" (appy.fyi 2026-08-25 documents a game case); we have not tested whether this one inserts ads when other apps open.

It has no disclosed revenue. But it steadily buys thousands of installs a day, which suggests each user's ad revenue most likely covers the acquisition cost (inference).

Where users come from: a straight line

Connecting its cumulative installs since launch (AppstoreSpy estimates): 9-03 about 12K, 9-17 55K, 10-03 87K, 10-21 143K, 11-06 197K. It's adding 1,500 to 5,000 a day, with occasional days jumping over 10K, and no single day where it suddenly blew up. This is the shape of continuous ad spend, not word-of-mouth growth (inference). It appears on the "Communication" free charts in 14 countries, peaking at #44 in Italy, #45 in France and #96 in the US, and never reaching an overall chart (Google Play charts, 11-06).

We found none of its ad creatives, and no one discussing it on X, Reddit or in the media; online there are only APK download sites and app data sites auto-generating pages. Similar tactics are visible elsewhere, though: a similar app called Step Tracker Launcher has only 241 likes on its Facebook page yet runs 55 install ads at the same time (Meta Ad Library, November).

Ratings are also rising steadily: 15 to 28 more a day, 947 in total, with only 30 written reviews (Google Play, 11-06). Beyond the complaints above, the written reviews include "good" and "satisfied.", plus a passage about life that has nothing to do with phones. One side reads "it's terrible", the other gives five stars. The most likely explanation is that the app prompts users to rate it and many tap five stars without thinking (inference). A 4.5 rating among a pile of similar apps at three-something stars helps lift conversion on the store page.

The people brought in by the ads are exactly those least likely to change phone settings: older people. One review even says "I'm switching to a new phone and not using Straight Talk anymore," referring to a budget prepaid carrier in the US. Once set, it's never switched back, which is why retention is high; the same people also say in the reviews "can't delete it" and "my contacts are gone."

Who it competes with: it's a copycat itself

This isn't one person's idea. It's a wave on Google Play that has run from 2025 to 2026. Games ran the play first: Hole U Can Eat Home App hit 12.8M installs, Barber Salon Launcher 7.16M. Then in mid-2026 it started getting copied into utilities, photo and communication apps. Counting communication apps alone, there are 35+ listings since 2025 with Home or Launcher in the name or description. Across all categories, 2025 saw four or five new ones a month, and from July 2026 it's been 27 to 36 a month (counted from Google Play titles and descriptions, so there's noise).

Earlier and bigger in communication:

(Google Play installs, 11-06)

The closest match is EverCoreTech's app: it launched a month earlier, has nearly the same package name, and its description uses the same line word for word: "Swipe right to open the … Launcher app". That exact sentence shows up across 7 apps from 6 developer accounts, which suggests a white-label template or one company spreading listings across accounts (inference, not verified). The developer of this app, Decorify, also has Messages Home, launched in Aug 18, same shell with SMS swapped in, 89k installs.

Where the risk is

First, the platform. Packaging a non-desktop feature as a home screen, so users hand over their Home button without understanding what they've done, is exactly what Google Play's rules on deceptive behavior and adware target. Security vendors published several reports on Google Play adware this year (Check Point's GhostAd, 2025-11; McAfee, 2026-10), and appy.fyi already documents "user thought it was a game, it was a launcher" as a public case. If the rules tighten, a whole cluster of these accounts could be pulled at once.

Second, the users. This crowd is trapped, not retained. Reviews turn into one-star complaints eventually.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, but don't copy. Dozens of companies are already doing this, and this app is itself one of a dozen-plus copycats. The play depends on a platform that could tighten at any time, and it earns from older people who never change their settings.

Who it fits: teams already mass-producing utility apps on Google Play with ready-made paid acquisition and ad monetization, treating it as one category in a test matrix. They're already doing this and can afford to lose accounts.

Who it doesn't fit: indie devs and small teams. You don't have cheaper traffic, you can't differentiate the product, and one account ban takes out your other apps too.

If you want to build it for real: take the insight, not the shell. The insight is that a high-frequency system entry point, where open count is everything. The legitimate version is a real senior-friendly home screen: large text and buttons, one-tap dialing for frequent contacts, a way for adult children to set it up remotely, and a one-tap exit shown on the home screen. Don't rely on ad-filled screens; charge adult children a small subscription or a one-time purchase (inference). The people burned by these apps are exactly your users.

How to acquire users: the buyer of a legitimate senior launcher is the adult child, not the senior. On Facebook, target people aged 35 to 55 whose parents use Android. The creative is the scene "Mom can't find the contacts again". In the store, search terms like "senior launcher" and "big icons".

How much time you have: no rush. A copycat play's window is set by the platform, and it could close at any time. A legitimate senior launcher doesn't depend on a window.

Signs you've misread this: ① Six months from now these Home-wrapper apps are still adding dozens a month, the leaders are still growing, and no one has been pulled at scale. That means the platform is tolerating it, and the play is more stable than we think. ② A small team uses the same shell in a new category (say dialing or SMS in a smaller-language market) and hits a million installs within three months without getting banned. That means there are corners nobody has crowded yet.

Why Contacts - Phone Calls, Home (Decorify) works

  • Package name: com.contacts.home.phone.calls.manager | Channel: Google Play (COMMUNICATION) | Developer: Decorify (site neurabittech.xyz, email [email protected])
  • Launched 2026-08-15. Free, ad-supported, no in-app purchases (googleplay library app_snap, 2026-11-06).
  • Research date: 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It isn't a dialer or contacts app that won on product strength. It's one product in a batch of "tool app repackaged as a Launcher (Home App)" on Google Play from 2025 to 2026. It gets users to set it as their default home screen, so every press of the Home button returns to it. That yields very high open frequency and retention, monetized with ads. Installs are steadily fed by paid acquisition (most likely Google App Ads or ad networks; this library didn't directly capture its creatives). Its only differentiation is the trick of putting the contacts list into the Launcher, and dozens of similar apps are running that same trick.

Curve since launch (AppstoreSpy estimate, app_day_ext): 9-03 about 11.5k → 9-17 55k → 10-03 87k → 10-14 117k → 10-21 143k → 10-27 164k → 11-06 197k. It's mostly a steady line of 1,500–5,000 a day, with a few single-day steps of 10k+ (9-17, 10-03, 10-21) and no viral breakout. That's the shape of sustained paid acquisition, not organic spread.

Rating growth is also steady: +15–28 ratings a day (app_day 10-29 to 11-06), most of them star-only. Text reviews are full of "good", "awesome", "satisfied." and even unrelated sentences ("new places n new faces…", "Tata la Trei copii…"), which fits in-app popups asking for ratings.

The developer's other app: Messages Home: SMS Texting App (com.messages.sms.chat.home.text.messaging, launched 2026-08-18, 89k installs, +7 over 4,692 days, rating 3.86). Same "Home" wrapper, SMS swapped in.

2. What it is and how it makes money

The core line in the store description: "Set Contacts - Phone Calls, Home as your default Home app to enjoy instant access to your contacts with a simple swipe… Swipe right to open the Contacts Launcher app". It also explains "To restore your previous Home screen, go to your device's Default Home app…" (app table description).

The features are standard dialer + contacts + call log + incoming-call screen themes + quick replies + callback reminders + blocking + backup, with no essential difference from Google's own Contacts and Phone apps. The real design is:

  1. Set as default home screen: once it's the Launcher, every Home press and every time another app closes lands the user on it. Opens go from "call occasionally" to dozens or hundreds a day, and the system doesn't kill the default Launcher in the background.
  2. Ad monetization: the app is labeled as containing ads, with no in-app purchases. Data safety says it shares data such as location and app activity with third parties (Play store page). Users and third-party analysts describe similar Launcher-wrapper apps as "showing ads every time you open any app" (a review cited in appy.fyi's report on Pillow Chase Home App, 2026-08-25). Whether this app also shows interstitials when other apps open is unverified.
  3. Hard to uninstall / stickiness: a French reviewer says "l'application a complètement pris le contrôle de mon téléphone" (26 likes) and "ont peux pas la supprimé". A US reviewer writes "My mobile will not let me send texts or make calls, whats app has gone" (46 likes), "Can't get to my email or contacts", and "my phone contacts have disappeared" (latest us/fr/it reviews pulled with google-play-scraper, 2026-11-06). The user base clearly skews toward older people unfamiliar with phone settings. That's exactly why this play retains so well, and also its risk.

COMMUNICATION category: since the start of 2025, apps with Home/Launcher in the name or description number 35+, mostly small indie dev accounts using blogspot as their website. The most direct predecessor is EverCoreTech's Contacts - Phone Call Launcher (package com.contacts.home.launcher.calls.phone.dialer), released a month before this one. Its description uses the same template line "Swipe right to open the … Launcher app easily". In the library this sentence appears in only 7 apps across 6 developer accounts (EverCoreTech, Decorify, Ignia LLC, Thebes Ads PTE LTD, Text Sticker Maker…, SAJAL MUKHERJEE). It is highly likely one white-label template vendor or one distribution network spreading installs across several accounts (unverified).

2. The bigger wave: every category is going "Home App"

The same playbook is spreading to games (Hole U Can Eat Home App 12.8M, Barber Salon Launcher 7.16M, Duck Blast Launcher 6.43M), utilities (QuickRecover HomeApp, PDF Reader Home App, Settings Home 908k and 7 days +290k), and galleries (Gallery - Photo, Video & Home, Ignia LLC, 1.21M). Counting this kind of app in the library by first-launch month: about 4 a month through mid-2025, then 27–36 a month starting 2026-07 (googleplay library, counted by title/description keywords, noisy). This product is a follower at the peak of the wave, not the pioneer.

3. The real dialer/contacts apps

Google Contacts (6.69B installs), Phone by Google (5.94B), CallApp (430M), Getcontact (400M), Simple Dialer (4.85M), Right Dialer (19.4M), and more. The system-built dialer is the biggest competitor; this app has no functional edge over it.

4. Growth tactics

ChannelEvidenceConfirmed
Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns / ad network cross-promotion)The install curve is a flat straight line plus one-day step jumps, with no natural spike; 14 countries also charted in their category, but all within ranks 40—125; the reviewers are low digital-literacy users (a classic ad-traffic profile). Our Meta Ad Library, Google Ads Transparency Center and TikTok EU Ad Library do not index it (it is not on the Google ads tracking list; not found ≠ not running ads).No (inference)
Meta paid acquisition with the same approachThe Meta Page for a similar wrapper app, "Step Tracker Launcher", has only 241 likes but 55 live install ads (metaads library, 2026-11).Yes (a similar app, not this one)
In-app review prompts934 ratings with only 29 written reviews; daily ratings grow at a steady pace; most text is unrelated or a one-word praise.Yes (data pattern)
Matrix spam installsSame developer, two Home apps; the same description template across 6 developer accounts; many similar package names (com.contacts.home.*).Yes
Store search (ASO)Titles stuffed with "Contacts", "Phone Calls", and "Home"; descriptions heavy with repeated keywords like contacts app and phone dialer.Yes (visible in descriptions), but the contribution is unknown.
Content / creators / media / Reddit / XJina, Exa search, and x-radar found no discussion at all; there are only auto-generated pages on APK mirror sites, AppBrain, and Similarweb.checked, none

V. Why it broke through

  1. A tactic edge, not a product edge: "make the utility the default Launcher" turns a normally low-frequency dialer into an ad slot that opens every time someone presses Home. Ad revenue and retention per user are far above a regular utility, so paid acquisition pencils out. The wave was proven in 2025 H2 by game Home apps (millions to tens of millions of installs) and spread to utilities, communication, and galleries from 2026 mid-year.
  2. Paid acquisition + multi-country distribution: 14 countries chart at once, with a steady few thousand installs a day, the shape of continuous spend.
  3. Target people who won't change settings: replacing "Phone" and "Contacts", entry points everyone uses, works best on older users. Reviews saying "can't find contacts" or "can't delete it" show that once set, it's hard to leave.
  4. Prompt for reviews to hold 4.5 stars, so the store conversion beats a field of 3-star rivals.

VI. Differentiation

Versus the system dialer: no functional difference; the only "difference" is being the Launcher. Versus similar-playbook rivals (EverCoreTech and others): almost no difference. The description template, feature list, and package-naming style are all the same, and it's smaller than the earlier ones. So differentiation isn't why it runs; the tactic and spend are.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • No public revenue, and no coverage on media, X, or Reddit; only auto-generated pages on APK mirror sites and app data sites. For the app itself, "few people know about it yet."
  • But this playbook is already crowded in the overseas tools dev circle: the Contacts/Messages Home category alone has a dozen-plus players, and 2026-09, October keep adding dozens of new Launcher-wrapper apps every month. Security vendors published Google Play adware reports several times across 2025–2026 (Check Point GhostAd 2025-11, McAfee RewaFake 2026-10), and third-party sites already document the 'Home app that looks like a game but is actually a Launcher' pattern as a public case (appy.fyi 2026-08-25).

8. What others can learn from it

  • High-frequency entry thinking: attach a low-frequency utility to a high-frequency system entry point (Launcher, lock screen, default dialer/SMS role), and the number of opens decides ad revenue.
  • One template, copied in bulk across categories and accounts; test which categories pay back with paid acquisition, then scale up.
  • But see the cost: the user experience is poor ("can't delete it", "contacts disappeared"). Once Google Play rules this kind of setting-as-default-Launcher, unrelated to the Launcher's function, as deceptive behavior or an ad policy violation, the whole matrix could be pulled together. The decent move is to build a Launcher as a real elder-friendly or minimalist home screen, not use it as an ad container.

Nine. Open questions

  • No direct evidence for the specific paid channels or spend (Google UAC, ad networks like AppLovin/Unity, cross-promotion); none of the three ad libraries has it.
  • Whether it shows interstitial ads when other apps open (adware behavior) has not been tested.
  • Whether Decorify is the same entity as EverCoreTech, Ignia, Thebes Ads, and others is inferred only from the description template.
  • ARPU and payback are unknown; whether ratings include inflated counts is unverified.
