# The app everyone waited four years for: Korean commission platform CREPE hit #1 the moment it launched, but the buzz isn't newly grown

**What it is** A Korean anime and fan-community commission platform: buyers pay artists and writers to make a work that belongs only to them. The money is held by the platform and only released to the creator after delivery, and the platform takes a cut.

**Why it took off** The web version has run for four years, with 2025 transaction volume of 43.6B won and 327k members, but it never had an app. A three-week pre-registration plus a limited sticker pack for first-time logins made long-time users download all at once on launch day, and on X people saw it trending in real time.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't chase this surge; learn how it got started four years ago. Where commissions still run on private bank transfers over social media and there's no vertical platform in your language or community, build a web product with "escrow payment + community language" and recruit artists one by one.

Grade C: this wave of installs comes from the loyal members it built over four years, which followers can't get. In Korea it's already synonymous with commissions, and its numbers have been publicly reported by the media. What you can learn is how two-sided platforms get started and how to run an app launch, but starting a two-sided platform from scratch in another market is slow and hard, so following it isn't worth much. CREPE (크레페), South Korea's biggest commission platform for the anime and comics fan crowd, spent four years as a web-only product. It finally went live on iOS and Android on 2026 October 21 and 22, and hit #1 on the Korean App Store's overall free chart on launch day. It looks like a new app blowing up, but it's really 30 million-plus longtime users finally getting it on their phones. This piece covers what it is, where the installs came from, how it makes money, and what someone building a similar business can take from it and what they can't.

### Oct 22, 1:30 PM: a row of "I'm first!"

On Oct 22, around 13:36 in the afternoon, CREPE's Android version went live on Google Play. The first review read "내가 1빠~" (I'm first!). Over the next ten-odd minutes, four or five more people left nearly the same thing: "내가 첫 리뷰다 크레페사랑해" (I'm the first review, I love CREPE), "드디어 나왓구나" (it's finally out), "제가 첫 리뷰인가요!!!" (am I the first review?!!!).

The next day someone said it plainly: "크레페 드디어 나왔구나!! 맨날 폰으로 네0버 홈 추가로 들어가서 불편했는데" (CREPE is finally out!! I was always going in through a Naver home-screen shortcut on my phone, which was such a pain). Earlier, someone on Naver Knowledge iN had asked "Does CREPE have an app?" and the answer was: "No, most people just bookmark the website."

That same afternoon, "크레페" climbed near the top of X's Korea trending list. The company later said it ranked #1 on the App Store Korea free overall chart and #3 on Google Play's Art & Design free chart, both reached in those two days (reported by madclub and 디지털데일리 10-28, citing the company).

These weren't new users. They were a crowd of long-time users who had been holding back for a long time.

### What it is

"Commissions" (커미션, commission) are a consumer habit in Korea's anime and fan communities: you find an artist or writer, or even a fortune teller or craftsperson, and pay them to make something that belongs only to you. In an April report this year, the JoongAng Ilbo gave a typical example: an artist's commission post read "draw your favorite character in a round, soft-looking style," priced at 5,000 to 10,000 won per character. Others commission "the way I'd like my favorite character to look in Halloween costume," a chibi of their original character, a voice line for a character, or a playlist that fits a world.

This kind of trade used to happen through private Twitter chats and bank transfers, where paying and never getting the work, going silent, or being scammed were all common. CREPE is a side project that a few people who were already into commissions started in 2022, and its core rests on one thing: the buyer's money is held by the platform and only released to the creator after delivery. On top of that, it adds things insiders understand, like the "타입" (fixed package templates), tags such as "#오마카세" (fully leaving it to the artist), and "#고정틀" (fixed composition), along with a scheduling calendar.

The money comes from commissions. Creators' withdrawals were originally charged about 10%, and later switched to a points system, charging 3–4% on each side based on the amount (official help center). The points are what you buy in the app, which is why Google Play in-app purchases show "$0.69–46.99 each," and why it appears on the Top Grossing chart.

### How deep the roots go

Before the app launched, the website had already built a sizable business. The numbers are ones the company has publicly disclosed:

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 transaction volume | 43.6B won (about $30M), 1.74M transactions, up about 70% from 2024B in 25.7 | 디지털데일리, madclub, 10-28 |
| members | 2025 year 327k, +52% YoY | Toss Payments customer interview |
| Revenue | 2023 ₩1.2B → 2024 ₩2.3B | Same as above |
| Avg. per order | ₩2–30k | Same as above |
| Overseas | 8–10% of users; ₩2025B in overseas transactions in 2.5. They never ran English marketing; foreign users translated tutorials themselves and it spread. | Same as above, madclub |
| Core audience | Women aged 10–20 | Co-founder Jang Dong-hyun |
| Funding | 2024 August Pre-A ₩2B, led by Bonangels | platum |

Korea JoongAng Daily cites industry estimates that Korea's online commission market exceeds ₩500B a year. CREPE is the largest vertical platform in it.

### How the app grew after launch

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play installs | 10-29: day 30,630,11-06 to 38,614,7 +5,788 | Google Play,11-06 |
| Daily adds | In the first few days after launch it's roughly 2,000–4,800,11-05 a day, then it drops off to roughly 450–490 a day 11-06 | Same as above (estimated from install bands) |
| Google Play rating count | 495 → 709, adding 20–35 a day | Same as above |
| Google Play charts | Ranked #7–9 in Korea's Art & Design Top Free and #6–8,10-29 to 11-06 in Top Grossing, consistently | Same as above |
| iOS rating count in Korea | 621(10-28)→ 781(11-06) | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS charts | Best Korean Graphics & Design Top Grossing rank: #2. Top Grossing in Taiwan #26, Japan #99 | Same as above |

Two things stand out. First, the peak has passed; now old users trickle in and organic inflow adds a bit more. Second, Play shows 39k installs against 327k members, so the app is only a fraction of the user base. The main audience is young women with a high iPhone share, so iOS installs are probably larger than Android (inferred), and many web members still haven't installed the app. On Google Play it also sits at #17–55 on the Art & Design Top Grossing chart in 60 other countries, but that is a shared aggregate chart for small markets and doesn't mean real local users.

### Where users come from: old members, pre-registration, and Twitter

**Existing members moving over is the main driver.** The reviews above saying "finally" are the evidence. One reviewer wrote: "웹 사이트일 때도 항상 유용하게 사용하였는데" (I always found it useful even when it was the website).

**Pre-registration plus a first-login reward.** In October 2 the official X account posted: "크레페가 주머니에 들어가요!" (CREPE is going into your pocket!). Pre-registration opened on both platforms: "If you pre-register, the app installs itself on your phone at launch; logging in for the first time gives a limited emoji pack." Three weeks of pre-registration concentrated downloads on launch day, which is what got it onto the overall chart. One review reads: "웹으로만 계속 쓰다가 사전 예약해서 바로 깔았는데" (I kept using only the web, but pre-registered so I installed it right away).

**People posting about it on Twitter.** Commission culture already lives on Korean Twitter, where artists and buyers gather. It hit real-time trends on launch day, and the company says users reposting the launch news drove it.

**Press is the cherry on top.** In October 28, platum, Venture Square, inews24, The Economist Korea, Digital Daily and madclub all ran stories the same day, with headlines like "#1 free on the App Store." The timing came after the peak, so the boost to downloads was probably limited. It reads more like something aimed at investors (inferred).

**Paid ads: none seen.** Searching "크레페 앱" on TikTok only turns up an unrelated dessert crepe shop (11-06). The only promotion visible was on social media: "pay with quick transfer and get 1.5% off," which the company says was its best-performing ROAS campaign (Toss Payments interview). Not seeing paid spend doesn't mean there was none, but this surge didn't need paid acquisition.

**Another plus: anti-AI stance.** In 2025 it launched an anti-AI initiative called "버틀레리안", and in June 2026 it changed its terms to in principle ban trading generative-AI works (non-generative tools like spell-checkers are fine, as are some programming commissions both sides agree on). Among artists who dislike AI, that alone builds trust.

### What users say in the app

Nearly all reviews are five stars, but each is followed by a list of feature requests, a sign of heavy daily users:

> "Please move the bookmark back to the bottom. Let us unsend messages sent within 2 minutes. Let the screen rotate to landscape, it's a tablet and it's really inconvenient." (5 stars, 10-31) "Dark mode!!! I use CREPE a lot at night and my eyes hurt." (5 stars, 10-27) "The creator earnings tab has a total-earnings feature that sums up the period selected on the calendar, but it's only on PC, not mobile. Would love to have it." (5 stars, 10-29)

The most notable issue is payment. Someone asked "앱내 결제는 포인트 결제만 되는 것 같아서 카드로 결제 기능은 업데이트 예정 없는지" (it seems in-app payment is points only, is there a plan to add card payment?). Another said "포인트 살때 5000인데 7000원을 뜯어가는건 뭐에요..?" (buying 5,000 points, why did you charge me 7,000 won?). Others want "top up any amount, like the web version". So buying points inside the app goes through store in-app purchase with fixed price tiers, and the prices are higher than on the web. The gap is probably the store's commission (inference). Part of the web's transaction volume moved into the app has to go to Apple and Google. So for CREPE the app works more as a reminder and communication tool (checking the schedule, receiving messages, push alerts when followed artists open commissions). For actual payments, long-time users will probably still go back to the web (inference).

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale | How CREPE differs |
|---|---|---|
| Private commissions on Twitter + bank transfer | The most original and largest channel | No escrow; scams and ghosting are common. CREPE was built to solve this |
| Postype "Request" | Postype app has 1.15M installs on Play; the commission feature came in 2024-11, and creators with income grew to 13× their first month's earnings within a year (Postype official blog) | Its core business is paid serials and fan submissions; commissions are an add-on. One blogger said it is "copied from CREPE, no difference" |
| 크몽 Kmong | Play 2.33M installs | Covers the general freelance market; doesn't match the small-ticket commissions and in-group language of fan circles |
| Artmug and others | Not verified | Local peers, far less buzz |
| VGen (Western markets), Skeb (Japan) | VGen has 380k commission services; Skeb has 45k artists | Each serves its own language market. Skeb is one-off commissioning with no back-and-forth; CREPE lets you negotiate |

Korea has no second vertical commission platform of the same scale, and Postype, the closest, is a follower. The app isn't CREPE's moat; the moat is the two sides it built over four years. More artists means more buyers, and more buyers make artists more dependent on it. Some artists even write in their commission posts, "이젠 크레페에서만 커미션 오픈" (From now on I only open commissions on CREPE).

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** This surge can't be copied. It's an established two-sided platform shipping its first app, and the installs came from 30 million long-time members, which a follower doesn't have. What's worth learning is how it got started four years ago, not this one month.

**Who it suits:** Someone already inside a subculture who has commissioned or taken commissions, ideally a 1–2 person team: one who knows the community, one who can build payments and escrow. That's how CREPE started, as a side project of a few commission enthusiasts.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone wanting to go head-to-head with CREPE in Korea (it has already become "commission = CREPE"; even Postype, bringing 1.15M users, is only following); anyone hoping to buy their way into a two-sided market with ads (artists won't come because of ads, and buyers follow artists); anyone counting on AI-generated commissions (the community hates AI most, and CREPE earned trust by taking an anti-AI stance).

**How to do it:** Find a place where commissions already happen a lot but are still arranged privately via bank transfer on social media, and build a website with "escrow payment + in-group language." Avoid markets and languages already taken: CREPE has Korean, Skeb has Japanese, VGen has English, and Mihuashi has Chinese. The rest could look at Southeast Asia or Latin America, where anime fandoms are large and no local vertical platform exists yet, but demand and willingness to pay there are unverified. First check how many "commission open" posts appear on local Twitter and Instagram. Launch the website first and don't rush an app: CREPE did ₩43.6B in annual transaction volume for four years without one, and in-app purchases get an extra cut from the store.

**How to get users:** Recruit artists before buyers. Go one by one to local artists on Twitter who are open for commissions. In the first few months, offer small orders commission-free (CREPE's early orders under ₩30k had no fee at all). Once artists post their commission links on Twitter, buyers follow. When both sides are running, copy CREPE's "three-piece app launch": open pre-registration three weeks ahead, give limited digital merch on first login, and have core users flood social media on launch day.

**When is the right time:** There's no holiday window, but there is an AI window. The more AI-generated images flood in, the more "made by a real human, backed by the platform" is worth. Entering while anti-AI sentiment is still rising is best.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① If CREPE's Play installs fall below 100 a day before December and it drops out of Korea's top 20 in Art & Design, old web users clearly don't want to move to the app, and the app route itself doesn't matter. ② If Postype or Kmong add scheduling calendars and limited emoji packs in their apps and start beating CREPE on the Top Grossing chart, the vertical-platform mindshare isn't that strong. ③ Conversely, if CREPE's iOS rankings in Taiwan and Japan keep climbing, overseas users are finding it on their own, leaving less room for others to take those markets.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X/SNS private commissions + bank transfer | Other | Has been around all along | The most original and largest channel for Korean commissions | No escrow; scams and ghosting are common. CREPE offers escrow payment and dispute handling |
| 포스타입 POSTYPE 리퀘스트 | Web | Commission feature 2024-11 (the app already had it) | Play 1.15M installs; iOS Korea 6,784 ratings; users earning from 리퀘스트 grew to 13x their first-month count in one year | Main business is a serial/submission community; commissions are a side feature. CREPE only does commissions and got there first in users' minds. |
| 크몽 Kmong | Android | 2012(Play 2015) | Play 2.33M installs | Broad business outsourcing market, doesn't fit fan culture or small-ticket commissions |
| 아트머그 Artmug | Web | Not verified | Unverified; media lists it among the main commission platforms | Local peer, with clearly less buzz and scale |
| VGen | Web | About 2021 | 380k+ commission services | Western VTuber-focused, English-language, also anti-AI; barely overlaps with the Korean market |
| Skeb | Web | 2018 | Japan's largest, 45k+ artists | One-off order → delivery, no communication in between. CREPE supports negotiation, back-and-forth chat, and a scheduling calendar. |

Where users come from

- **Verified** **web-user migration** : web operations since 2022; in 2025, 327k members and 1.74M transactions. Users kept asking for an app (Naver 知识iN). App installs were far below member count, so migration is still ongoing.

- **Verified** **Store pre-registration + first-login exclusive stickers** : 10-02 pre-registration opened on both platforms; official X and help-center notices said "first login gets exclusive stickers."

- **Verified** **Organic spread on X (Twitter)** : 10-22 afternoon, it reached the top of X's Korea real-time trends (madclub and Digital Daily cited company statements).

- **Verified** **Press release coverage** : 10-28 platum, Venture Square, inews24, The Economist Korea, Digital Daily, and madclub all ran stories the same day.

- **Verified** **Word of mouth from its anti-AI stance** : 2025 it launched the anti-AI project 'Butlerian', and 2026-06 its terms in principle ban trading generative-AI works (JoongAng, Digital Daily).

- **Verified** **Organic inflow from overseas** : no English marketing; overseas users make up 8–10%, spread by foreign users translating tutorials themselves (Toss Payments interview). There is an @CREPE_Global account.

- Inferred **Paid ads / TikTok** : searching TikTok for 'crepe app' in Korean turns up nothing relevant; our ad library doesn't track this product.

## CREPE (크레페) Google Play version: why it's charting

> key: play_com.cookieplace.crepe | channel: play | developer: Cookieplace Inc. (쿠키플레이스, Seoul) | research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

This isn't a new product breaking out. It's **South Korea's biggest anime commission (커미션) C2C middleman platform moving four years of web users into an app** . 2026-10-02 opened pre-registration on both platforms (first-login gift: exclusive stickers), 10-21 iOS and 10-22 Android launched, and on launch day it hit #1 on the Korea App Store Top Free overall chart and trended on X Korea. The installs come from migrating existing users plus concentrated media coverage, not paid acquisition, and not new demand.

### 1. What it is

- Korea's anime/fan-culture commission middleman: buyers (신청자) pay to commission artists, writers, fortune-tellers, and others for a one-of-a-kind piece (art, writing, crafts, design, tarot, voice). The platform holds payment in escrow and releases it to the creator after delivery. For categories and tags like #오마카세 and #고정틀, see namu.wiki ([CREPE - 크레페](https://namu.wiki/w/CREPE)).

- Fees: creators pay 10% on withdrawals (4% service fee + 5% financial-related, see [the official X FAQ](https://x.com/CREPE_CM/status/1646034830982017025)); later it moved to a points system, with tiered fees of 3–4% on each side ([Help Center: introduction of the 포인트 system and fee overhaul](https://help.crepe.cm/hc/ko/articles/8553609029263)). The $0.69–46.99 in-app purchases on Google Play "per item" are most likely the points bought inside the app (data card iap_range), which is why it shows up on the **Top Grossing** chart.

- Company: 2022-04-27 founded and launched the web version at the same time; 2022-12 angel round; 2024-08 Bon Angels led a 2B KRW Pre-A ([unicornfactory](https://www.unicornfactory.co.kr/article/2024101510001992958), [platum](https://platum.kr/archives/236092), [LinkedIn job page](https://kr.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4270094779)).

### 2. Data (our database)

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Play installs | 30,630(10-29) → 38,614(11-06), +5,788 in 7 days | googleplay database app_day / data card |
| Play ratings count | 495 → 709, +20–35 per day | Same as above |
| Play Korea Art & Design category | Free chart #7–9, Top Grossing #6–8 (on the chart every day from 10-29 to 11-06) | googleplay chart_rank |
| Other 17 countries | Only on the Art & Design **Top Grossing** chart at #55–60. That's a shared aggregate chart for small countries, not evidence of real local users. | Data card charts_latest_day. |
| iOS (id 6753073065) Korea rating count | 621(10-28) → 781(11-06), +114 in 7 days | appstore library app_day |
| iOS Korea Graphics & Design Top Grossing | Best rank #2; Taiwan Top Grossing 26, Japan 99 | appstore app_profile |

Daily installs fell from roughly 2,000–4,800 in the first few days after launch (Play install buckets, not exact daily figures) to about 450–490 a day by 11-05–11-06: **the launch peak is over; now it's legacy users migrating slowly plus organic inflow** . Play installs are 39k, a small fraction of the 327k members the company reports (2025). That gap suggests many web users haven't installed the app yet, and iOS users are a large share too (iPhone usage is high among Korea's female anime audience).

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How CREPE differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private commissions via X (Twitter) / personal SNS + bank transfer | Other | Has been around all along | The most original and largest channel for Korean commissions | No escrow: paying first and never getting the work, disappearing, and scams are common. CREPE was built to solve exactly this ([Toss Payments customer interview](https://www.tosspayments.com/blog/articles/41109)). |
| Postype POSTYPE 'Request' (리퀘스트) | Web / iOS / Android | Commission feature 2024-11 | Play app 1.15M installs (Google Play database); iOS Korea 6,784 ratings; users earning from 리퀘스트 grew to 13x their first-month count in one year ([Postype official blog](https://www.postype.com/@blog/post/19879429)) | Its core is a paid serial / fan-submission community, with commissions as an add-on. One blogger wrote that it was built 'to take a slice of the commission market, copying CREPE, with no real difference' ([phalanx-club](https://phalanx-club.tistory.com/1460)). CREPE is a vertical platform for commissions only. |
| 크몽 Kmong | Web / App | 2012(Play 2015) | 2.33M installs on Play (googleplay library) | A broad freelance marketplace aimed at business outsourcing. Commissions are one category among many and don't fit the fan-culture vibe. |
| 아트머그 Artmug | Web | Not verified | Unverified. JoongAng Ilbo lists it alongside CREPE and Kmong as a main commission platform ([joongang](https://www.joongang.co.kr/article/25418750)). | A Korean local peer with clearly less buzz |
| 당근 / 번개장터 | App | Early on | A mainstream secondhand platform | Commission listings show up there too, but without the commission workflow, scheduling, or escrow tools. |
| VGen | Web | About 2021 | 380k+ commission services ([vgen.co](https://vgen.co/)) | Western VTuber / streamer-focused, English-language, and explicitly anti-AI. Barely overlaps with the Korean market. |
| Skeb | Web / App | 2018 | Japan's largest, 45k+ artists ([Medium](https://medium.com/skeb-jp/guide-154f3a80c3b6)) | One-off 'order → delivery' with no communication in between. CREPE is a commission where you can negotiate and chat back and forth. |

Korea has no second vertical commission platform of comparable size. The closest is Postype, whose commission feature only launched 2024-11, so it's a follower.

### 4. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Legacy web-user migration is the main driver.** 2025 327k members, +52% year over year; 2025 GMV 43.6B KRW and 1.74M transactions, up about 70% from 2024 (25.7B) ([Digital Daily](https://m.ddaily.co.kr/page/view/2026102817275997130), [Toss Payments](https://www.tosspayments.com/blog/articles/41109)). It was web-only until now, and the Naver 知识iN question 'is there no CREPE app?' ([Naver 知识iN](https://m.kin.naver.com/qna/dirs/304/docs/485406848)) shows users were waiting for one.

2. **Pre-registration plus a first-login reward.** 10-02 pre-registration opened on both platforms, with 'first login gets exclusive stickers' ([official X](https://x.com/CREPE_CM/status/2105873032145482221), [help-center notice](https://help.crepe.cm/hc/ko/articles/17838427569039)). The October newsletter also promoted it ([X](https://x.com/CREPE_CM/status/2109886854971478376)). On launch day, people who pre-registered downloaded in a wave and pushed it into the overall chart.

3. **Organic spread on X (Twitter).** Commission culture has always lived on Korean Twitter. 10-22 afternoon, 'CREPE' entered the top of X Korea's real-time trends; the company said users shared the launch news on their own ([madclub](http://www.madclub.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=15690)).

5. **Word of mouth from its anti-AI stance.** 2025 it launched the anti-AI project 'Butlerian', and 2026-06 updated its user terms to in principle ban trading generative-AI works ([JoongAng](https://www.joongang.co.kr/article/25418750), [Digital Daily](https://m.ddaily.co.kr/page/view/2026102817275997130)). Among artists who dislike AI, that alone works as a trust signal.

6. **Organic inflow from overseas.** No English marketing; overseas users make up 8–10%, spread by foreign users translating tutorials on their own ([Toss Payments](https://www.tosspayments.com/blog/articles/41109)). On Reddit, a British artist asked how to use CREPE ([r/ArtistLounge](https://www.reddit.com/r/ArtistLounge/)). There is also an official English account, @CREPE_Global.

7. **Paid ads: no evidence found.** Searching TikTok for 'crepe app' in Korean returns only a dessert shop of the same name and unrelated videos (TikHub, 2026-11-06). Our ad library doesn't track this product, so not finding ads doesn't mean there were none. The only thing visible is payment promotions on SNS like 'quick transfer, 1.5% off', and claims of good ROAS ([Toss Payments](https://www.tosspayments.com/blog/articles/41109)).

### 5. Why it took off

- **Why users are showing up now:** the platform has run for four years, with 327k members and 1.74M transactions a year, but only on the web. The native app launch, pre-registration push, and first-login stickers released built-up demand within a day or two.

- **Where they came from:** Korean Twitter commission circles and existing web users, the core audience the company calls the '1020 generation of women' ([madclub](http://www.madclub.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=15690)).

- **Why they stay and why they pay:** Commission work is high-frequency repeat buying (small Korean-won orders of 5,000–10,000 per piece are common, averaging 2–30k KRW a order), and one person keeps hunting for different artists. The app fixes long-standing pain points of the web version: a calendar for commission schedules, one-on-one messages without logging in again, and push alerts when followed artists open their slots (beta user feedback, [madclub](http://www.madclub.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=15690)). The reviews are full of 5-star feature requests (bumping posts to the top, bookmark placement, tablet landscape mode), which shows heavy users are actually using it (data from recent_reviews).

### 6. Differentiation

- Compared with **private X deals** : there is escrow, refund rules, and dispute handling. That's the core reason CREPE has grown since 2022.

- Compared with **Kmong** and other general outsourcing marketplaces, this one was built by commission insiders (the founding team came from the commission culture itself). Categories, tags, the "type (타입)" templates, #오마카세 (fully left to the artist's discretion), and scheduling calendars are all designed around fan-commission habits. Small orders (under 30k KRW) were once completely fee-free.

- Compared with **Postype 리퀘스트** : Postype's core business is serialized fiction and submissions, with commissions as an add-on feature. CREPE claimed the "commission = 크레페" mindset first, and commission posts openly say "이젠 크레페에서만 커미션 오픈" (commissions now open only on CREPE).

- Anti-AI clauses are a plus in the artist community, but VGen does this too, so it isn't unique.

- **The app itself isn't the differentiator.** It just moves an existing web advantage onto mobile. The real reason it worked is the two-sided network effect built in the web era (more artists → more buyers → artists depend on it even more), plus pent-up demand for an app.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- **Already widely reported in Korea:** GMV (43.6B), revenue (2023 year 1.2B → 2024 year 2.3B KRW), and membership numbers have all been made public. Central Daily News ran a feature on the commission market estimating the whole market at over 500B KRW, and 10-28 tech outlets ran press releases. So revenue is public and widely discussed.

- **Almost nobody outside Korea knows about it:** an X corpus search (x-radar, 30 days) for "crepe commission" returns 0 posts; overseas there are only scattered Reddit threads.

- **Copycats:** Postype 리퀘스트 (2024-11) is widely seen as imitating CREPE; no new copycats have been spotted in the app era yet.

### 8. What to borrow

- Build a vertical platform in a subculture that already exists but whose deals happen privately: escrow-backed transactions plus in-group language. Thicken the network effect first, then launch an app to capture pent-up demand.

- App launch playbook: open pre-registration 3 weeks ahead, give limited digital merch (emoji packs) to early sign-ups, and get core users posting about it on launch day on Twitter.

- As AI-generated content floods the market, publicly taking an anti-AI stance is a trust asset in a creator marketplace.

- Selling points inside the app lets part of the web GMV show up on store charts, which means extra exposure.

### 9. Still unclear

- The actual download split between Play and iOS, and pre-registration counts, have not been disclosed.

- Whether in-app points all go through Google / Apple in-app purchase (15–30% commission) or external payments are also used; this affects app-channel margins.

- No evidence was found of paid ads (Meta / Naver / Twitter ads), and it can't be ruled out.

- The scale and launch timing of smaller local competitors such as Artmug were not verified.

- The "No. 1 on the App Store overall chart" figure is the company's own claim. Our appstore database starts from 10-28, so it doesn't cover the overall chart on launch day.
