# Two strangers wrote word-for-word identical reviews: VideoClub and India's "pay-per-minute" video companion app

**What it is** An India-only one-on-one video companion app. It matches you with a host recruited by the platform, in the dialect you choose, billed per minute.

**Why it took off** Its parent company VoiceClub already makes money from voice companionship, and it moved the host pool, payments, and traffic-buying playbook over directly. It pushed hard from 9 to October, and by November the push had visibly slowed.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build a video version for India. First get host recruiting, per-minute settlement, and local payments working in one market with voice or text, then launch new shells by medium, language, and audience on a shared host pool.

Grade C: The traction comes from the parent's host pool and traffic capabilities, which followers can't access. The product has no real differentiation, and India already has a dozen-plus rivals with tens of millions of installs. What's worth learning is the "one host pool, many shells" approach, but copying the app itself isn't worth it. Chatter in small circles

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-29 · 11-07 installs 385,308

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

On Sep 2026 15, a user named Biren Hansda left a five-star review on Google Play for an app that had been listed for seven weeks: "Best live chat app Best live Video talking app Best talking app Akelepan se aaram." The last phrase is in Hindi and means "comfort in loneliness." The next day, another user named E Bhargav wrote the exact same line, with only a few commas added. By Nov 6, when I opened the India store page, both reviews were still sitting in the most prominent spot. The app is VideoClub. In just over three months it has reached 385k installs. It isn't a new team's new idea. It's a new video shell opened by VoiceClub, one of India's largest voice companion apps. Below: what it sells, where its traffic comes from, and why its growth looks fast but is hard to copy.

### What it is

VideoClub is a one-on-one video chat app, India-only. Its website's hero text reads "Made for Bharat · Video first," with three selling points: matching by the language you speak (the site claims 15+ Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil…), phone numbers kept private, and hang up anytime.

What it really sells is "someone to talk to." The person on the other end isn't a random stranger. They're a companion host recruited by the platform and paid per minute. The same developer has another app, VideoClub Partner, whose store page says it helps you "manage your video call schedule, track earnings, and stay in touch with clients." It is only for "officially onboarded Partners," and 11-06 shows 10k+ downloads.

The developer account is called "VideoClub," but at the bottom of the store page the company is CAPSLOCK MARKETPLACES PRIVATE LIMITED, based in HSR Layout, Bangalore. The support email is help@voiceclub.app, and the privacy policy sits under the voiceclub.app domain. In other words, this is VoiceClub's company.

The store copy was barely edited before going live: the body text says "support [9+] languages," with the brackets still there. The age note reads "for 18+ only," but the rating is 12+. The people behind it clearly weren't focused on the store page.

### The parent product already makes money

VoiceClub launched on Google Play in January 2023. By 11-06 it had 25.3M installs, a 4.1-star rating, and 41.8k reviews, and ranked #12 on India's social free chart. According to Inc42's public financials, its revenue went from ₹24 Cr in FY2.8 to ₹25 Cr in FY14.5 (about $1.7M), more than quadrupling in a year. In December 2023 it raised a $700k seed round led by Better Capital.

How the money comes in: users top up, the platform pays hosts per minute, and the platform takes a cut. VoiceClub's recruiting page is blunt: "VoiceClub Partner earns ₹40,000–80,000 a month," "paid to your bank account or UPI every 10 days," plus a calculator that works out earnings from 4, 8, and 12 hours online per day. The page shows five success stories earning "₹50–60K a month," with placeholder avatars made of gray backgrounds and two initials.

VideoClub has **no in-app purchases** on Google Play and no ads. This is common among India's companion apps: money moves through UPI or web payments rather than Play, which avoids the channel cut, but it also means the charts can't show how much they earn. Outsiders can't see what VideoClub charges per minute or how many people have paid (unverified).

### Where the traffic came from: pushed hard, then let go

Daily installs by third-party estimate:

| Timeline | Total installs | Daily new installs |
|---|---|---|
| 07-29 | — | Launched |
| 08-23 | 384 | Almost no push in the first month |
| 09-04 | 10.9k | |
| 09-10 → 10-04 | 16k → 198k | Mostly 6,000–8,000,9-11 at around 15.8k, 10-02 at around 19k |
| 10-08 → 10-27 | | 5,000–8,000 |
| November | 385k (11-06) | Dropped to 1,300–4,400 |

On India's social Top Free chart, it peaked at #10-31 and dropped to #79,11-06 162.

Daily installs jumped from a few hundred to over ten thousand with no app update in between (the last update was 10-14), then tapered off after mid-October. That pattern looks more like a budget spent and then pulled than like word of mouth (inferred). Whether it was Meta / Google ads, or traffic from Capslock's other utility apps, which are pushed heavily (Vokey with 5.54M installs, #1 on India's utilities free chart; Shanti Club with 13.7M, ringtones; JhalakAI with 2.19M), can't be told apart from the outside.

Two more things:

- **A separate developer account** . VideoClub isn't under VoiceClub's account. Apps like this are easy to report and take down, so a separate account isolates that risk. This is standard practice (inferred).

- **The reviews look arranged** . The two identical reviews at the top, plus the fact that 653 reviews equal only 0.17% of installs and the overall rating is just 3.4 stars (VoiceClub's is 4.1), suggest most people who installed didn't leave a review, and some of those who did were prompted (inferred).

### The host side: "earn money from home"

Acquiring hosts is more interesting than acquiring users. On YouTube there are reviews like "voice club partner app | videoclub partner app | real or fake" (Mr Technical Seth, about 1,700 views, one month ago), and on Instagram reels like "Ghar Baithe Paisa Kamane Ka Naya Tarika" (a new way to earn money from home). The main recruits appear to be women looking for part-time work from home (inferred from comments and videos).

VideoClub Partner's store reviews reveal the other side:

> "girls Don't use this App very bad App u will get very less money" (Sadaf Shaque, 10-07)

> "i cant withdraw money ." (Moumi dey, 11-03)

On one side, recruiting pages promise ₹40–80K a month; on the other, reviews say "very little money" and "can't withdraw." The hard part of this business isn't the app. It's the host pool: recruiting them, keeping them, and making settlement trustworthy.

### Who it's competing with: a crowded field

| Product | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | Compared with VideoClub |
|---|---|---|
| FRND | 79.4M, #9 on India's social free chart | Already has video calls and "Conversation Coach" hosts, roughly 200x its scale |
| Dostt | 21.9M, #11 | The official site is literally called Video & Audio call, and it recruits Listeners with claims of 1 lakh a month |
| VoiceClub (sister app) | 25.3M, #12 | Voice-first parent product, sharing customer support and host system |
| Connecto / Achat | 32.5M / 39.2M | Voice-first social and companionship chat |
| Josh - Live Calls & Chat | 291M | Short-video giant VerSe pivoted to live video calls. VideoClub is the #1 'Similar apps' entry on its Store listing |
| ChaloJi / PyaarHai / Deka / Suma | 11.2M / 14.7M / 4.57M / 2.58M | An India-focused 1v1 video app from a going-global team. Coin-based in-app purchases, charted on India's Top Grossing |
| Chamet / Tango / MuLive / Joychat Pro | 78.4M / 387M / 7.69M / 5.73M | Global live streaming and 1v1 video. Some have launched India-specific versions |

The 'video + matched by Indian language + anonymous' pitch is already on FRND's and Dostt's homepages. VideoClub shows no product difference, and 385k is a small number in this table.

This playbook isn't a secret either. VoiceClub's funding and revenue are public on Inc42 and Entrackr, and "how Voice Club-style apps make tens of millions of rupees in India" has already been turned into Instagram and Facebook posts by outsourcing dev shops selling the source code.

### Why it could take off

In one line: the advantage is the team behind it, not the product.

- **Model ready** : Voice companionship has already run for a year at ₹14.5 Cr on VoiceClub. Video pays more per minute. FRND, Dostt, and Josh are all moving toward video, and Capslock opened a video shell on the side.

- **Hosts ready** : The recruiting, training, and every-10-day payout system transfers straight over from VoiceClub.

- **Traffic ready** : A company that mass-distributes utility apps and has tens of millions of installs can push 300,000+ installs to a new shell without much trouble.

- **Demand is real** : Men in India's second- and third-tier cities want people who speak their dialect to chat with for company. FRND and Dostt's tens of millions of installs already prove it.

Of these four, the only one a follower can bring along is the last.

### If it were you

**C: Worth learning from, not worth copying.** This is a big company launching a new shell for a business that already works. Its edge is a ready host pool, payments, and traffic muscle. The product has no differentiator, the category has a dozen rivals with tens of millions of installs, and it's already slowing down in November.

**Who it suits** A team that has already run companionship, voice rooms, or live streaming in some market and has a host pool and a payout system. What you'd take from Capslock is 'one host pool, many shells'.

**Who it doesn't suit** Indie devs starting from zero with no host supply. Anyone hoping to break into India with a 'video version' or 'dialect version' as the angle (FRND and Dostt have both already done it). Anyone unwilling to take on content moderation, minors, or payment compliance risk.

**How to do it** If you must, don't start with video in India. First get 'host recruiting + per-minute payouts + local payment collection (not Store IAP)' working on voice or text. That's the hardest part of the whole business. Once it works, open new shells by medium (voice → video), by language, or by audience, all sharing one host pool and backend, each under its own developer account. Moving to Bangladesh, Indonesia, or the Middle East works the same way. Those markets already have Chamet, Tango, and a set of going-global 1v1 video apps. What transfers is the ability to run local-language, local-host operations, not the app itself.

**How to acquire users** Buy on both sides. For users, follow Capslock's curve: a concentrated three-to-four-week paid push to build volume, then check retention before deciding whether to keep going. For hosts, use 'make money at home' short videos and reviews. The recruiting page should state how many hours a day you need to be online and what you can earn. But the payouts have to be real. A 'can't withdraw' comment under VideoClub Partner will talk the next batch of hosts out of signing up.

**Deadline** There's no clear window. These apps have been operating in India for five or six years. This isn't an opportunity that will suddenly close, and it's not one you can grab a spot in by entering now.

**Signs we misread this** ① VideoClub, with no major version update, returns to 5,000+ daily installs and back into the top 100 on the charts, and its rating climbs toward 4 stars. That would show the video version retains users on its own, not just through a push. ② Capslock publicly discloses VideoClub's revenue, or video takes a clear share of VoiceClub's revenue in its next fiscal year. ③ A small team with no parent-company resources builds a million-scale video companionship app in India using the same playbook. That would show the barrier is lower than it looks.

## Why VideoClub - Video Call Friends (com.cplock.videoclub) got traction

> Channel: Google Play (India only) | Developer account 'VideoClub', legal entity CAPSLOCK MARKETPLACES PRIVATE LIMITED (Bengaluru) | Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It's a **sister shell** from Capslock (VoiceClub's parent in India) that moves the paid-companionship playbook from voice to video. It's not a new product. The 385k installs came from the parent's resources: a ready host (Partner) supply system, proven traffic buying and monetization methods, and a whole lineup of sister apps. The product itself looks no different from FRND and Dostt, the big players already doing video companionship. The growth curve got a push from 9–October, then clearly slowed in November.

### 1. Data (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)

- Cumulative global installs **385,308** , +30,081 over the last 7 days. Charted in only one region (India, SOCIAL Free chart).

- Launched 2026-07-29. Install curve since launch estimated by AppstoreSpy (`app_day_ext`):
    - 8-23 only 384 installs, 9-04 10.9k. Almost no push in the first month.
    - **9-10 → 10-04 is the scale-up phase** : 16k → 198k. Daily installs mostly ran 6,000–8,000,9-11, with single days around 15.8k and 10-02 around 19k.
    - 10-08 → 10-27 still averaged 5,000–8,000 a day (10-22 around 12k).
    - **November fell to 1,300–4,400 a day** (11-05 +1,338,11-06 +1,737).

- India SOCIAL Free chart rank: best 79 on 10-31, then fell to 162 → 11-06 (chart_rank).

- Store listing (India, read 2026-11-06 via Jina): **3.4 stars, 653–656 reviews** , download tier '1L+' (100k+). Last updated 2026-10-14 (1.0.11). Reviews are only about 0.17% of installs.

- **No Google Play in-app purchases** (`offers_iap = False`, and the listing doesn't show 'Offers in-app purchases'). No ads. Like sister app VoiceClub, Dostt, and Connecto, it doesn't use Play billing. Indian companionship apps commonly collect money through UPI or web payments inside the app, which is why their revenue doesn't show up on Play's grossing charts.

### 2. Competitors: a large group of apps offer live video chat with real people, paid per minute

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs from VideoClub |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VoiceClub (sister app) | Android / iOS | 2023-01(Play) | 25.3M installs, India SOCIAL Free #12,4.1, 41.8k reviews. Also on iOS, 2025-12 (42 rating in the India store) | Voice companionship parent product. VideoClub is its video version, sharing the support email help@voiceclub.app and the Partner system |
| FRND | Android | 2019 | 79.4M, #9, has Play in-app purchases | Already has video calls and a "Conversation Coach" host recruitment; its scale is 200x that of VideoClub |
| Dostt | Android | 2024-06 | 21.9M, #11 | The official site literally says "Video & Audio call", and the Listener recruitment claims ₹1 lakh a month. The same model already had video. |
| Connecto | Android | Unknown | 32.5M, #14 | Social companionship chat, also with no Play in-app purchases |
| Achat | Android | 2023-08 | 39.2M, #15 | Singapore-registered entity, voice rooms + in-app purchases |
| Josh - Live Calls & Chat | Android | 2020 | 291M | Short-video giant VerSe has pivoted to "live video calls", and the first "similar app" listed in the store is this one |
| ChaloJi / PyaarHai / Deka / Suma | Android | 2024–2025 | 11.2M / 14.7M / 4.57M / 2.58M | An going-global team's video chat app for India, built on 1v1 video chat, with gold-coin in-app purchases, charting in India's Entertainment / Lifestyle Top Grossing |
| Chamet / Tango / MuLive / Joychat Pro | Android | 2010–2024 | 78.4M / 387M / 7.69M / 5.73M | Global live streaming + 1v1 video. MuLive and Joychat have India-specific versions, and they're in the top 25 of India's Social Top Grossing |
| OmeTV / Azar / Omega | Android / iOS | 2013–2019 | 250M / 290M / 51M | Random stranger video matching, not built around Indian regional languages |

**Bottom line** : "No competitors" is not the situation. India's video companionship niche is already crowded with FRND, Dostt and a pile of going-global 1v1 video apps. VideoClub's 385k is a very small slice of it.

### 3. Growth tactics: where users come from

1. **Parent company's playbook and resources (confirmed)** : The package prefix com.cplock matches VoiceClub (com.cplock.voice_club). The store page's support email is help@voiceclub.app, the privacy policy is hosted under sites.google.com/voiceclub.app, and the developer address is Capslock's office in HSR Layout. Capslock also runs utility apps built for bulk user acquisition, such as Vokey (5.54M, India TOOLS free #1), Shanti Club (13.7M, ringtones) and JhalakAI (2.19M, LIFESTYLE #3) (googleplay library). This shows the team already has the capability to buy traffic and ship apps in bulk.

2. **VideoClub has its own developer account (confirmed)** : It is not under VoiceClub's developer account. VoiceClub's store page "More by" lists only VoiceClub Partner, Partner Onboarding and Rooh AI. Apps like this get reported and taken down easily, so opening a separate account to isolate that risk is standard practice (inferred).

3. **Host supply is recruited via "earn money from home" content (confirmed to exist, scale unknown)** : A separate VideoClub Partner app (com.cplock.videoclub_partner_app, 10K+ downloads and 3.5 stars from 42 reviews on the Indian store page) serves as the host side. On YouTube there are reviews like "voice club partner app | videoclub partner app | real or fake" (@mrtechnicalseth, about 1.6K views, posted about 1 months ago). On Instagram there are reels such as "Ghar Baithe Paisa Kamane Ka Naya Tarika – Voice Club App Review". VoiceClub Partner's pitch is "earn per minute, paid out every 10 days".

4. **Paid acquisition (likely, no direct evidence)** : Daily installs jumped from a few hundred to 6,000–19,000 starting around 9-10, then declined gradually from mid-October and returned to a thousand or two in November. This looks like budget-driven spend followed by a pullback, not organic word of mouth. Organic growth doesn't swing this fast without a version update (the last update was 10-14). Our Meta and Google ad libraries don't track this app (checked the advertiser table, 0 rows; absence from the list doesn't mean it didn't advertise). SensorTower describes VoiceClub as "being advertised actively".

5. **Incentivized reviews (suspected)** : the most prominent positive reviews on the store page were written by two different users, 9-15 and 9-16, word for word: "Best live chat app Best live Video talking app Best talking app Akelepan se aaram." (Hindi for "comfort when lonely"). Templated praise like this is common when streamers or staff are asked to post it.

6. **Third-party stores** : PhonePe's Indus Appstore also carries it (indusappstore.com has its listing page).

7. **Nothing found** : No media coverage, no X discussion (x-radar search for VoiceClub over 90 days returned 0 posts), no Product Hunt. TikTok is banned in India, so not applicable.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Why users come** : Male users in India's second- and third-tier cities want to kill boredom by video chatting with people who speak their dialect (from the site: "Made for Bharat", 15+ Indian languages, phone numbers hidden, anonymous, hang up anytime). Demand has already been validated by FRND and Dostt.

- **Why now** : VoiceClub's voice companionship has already generated revenue (Inc42: FY24 ₹2.8 Cr → FY25 **₹14.5 Cr** , +425%; 2023-12 raised a $700k seed round led by Better Capital). At the same time, Dostt, FRND and Josh are all moving into video, which commands higher prices. VideoClub is Capslock's new shell in that direction.

- **Why people pay** : The sibling model is users topping up, paying hosts per minute, and the platform taking a cut. VideoClub's store page has no Play in-app purchases; specific prices and conversion rates are **unverified** .

- **Retention** : The 3.4-star rating is noticeably lower than VoiceClub's 4.1 stars. Install growth and chart rank both declined in November, so there is no sign it retains users.

### 5. Differentiation

- On paper the difference is "video + matching by Indian language + anonymity". But Dostt's site already says Video & Audio call, FRND says "in your language", and going-global apps like ChaloJi and PyaarHai also offer Indian 1v1 video. **There is no identifiable product-level difference** .

- The real difference is **who is behind it** : a voice companionship brand that already has 25M installs, an existing host recruitment and settlement system, plus the bulk-traffic capability from utility apps. It got 385k installs in three months because of that, not because of the product.

- So differentiation is **not** why it took off. It took off because of the parent company's resources plus one round of paid spend.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- No one has written about this app itself: no media coverage can be found, and no one is discussing it on X.

- But the model behind it is public. VoiceClub's funding and FY25 revenue (₹14.5 Cr) can be found on Inc42, Entrackr and Tracxn. "How Voice Club apps make tens of millions of rupees in India" has already been turned into Instagram reels and YouTube videos by outsourced dev shops selling source code (sunrasofttech and others). The playbook is no secret in India's developer circles, and the niche is crowded.

- Copycats: No clear case of someone copying VideoClub was found. MyChatClub, with a similar style (Instagram reel "India ka favourite voice & video chat hangout"), has appeared, but the relationship is unverified.

- Note: don't confuse it with PitchBook's "CAPSLOCK 2026-06-16 acquired by mthree", which refers to a UK cybersecurity training company unrelated to this Indian Capslock Marketplaces.

### 7. What others can learn

- First get one voice or text companionship product working end to end, covering host supply, per-minute settlement and UPI payments. Then open new shells by medium (voice → video), language and audience, sharing the host pool and backend. Open a separate developer account for each new shell to isolate takedown risk.

- Taking payment outside Play in-app purchases saves 15–30% in channel fees in India. The tradeoff is that revenue won't show up on Play's grossing charts, and the approach is more likely to hit policy red lines.

- The retention card's mention of moving to Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Middle East: these markets already have Chamet, Tango and going-global 1v1 video apps. What can be moved is not the product but the operating capability of "local language + local host supply".

### 8. Still unclear

- Payment methods and prices (whether the app takes UPI / Razorpay), conversion rates and host revenue share are all unverified.

- Whether the 9–October scale-up came from Meta / Google paid spend, or from cross-promotion by sibling apps like VoiceClub, Vokey and Shanti Club. Neither ad library tracks this app.

- Whether the November slowdown was a deliberate budget cut due to poor ROI, or policy risk (such as a Play warning).
