The same "her", messaging several of his phones in the same second: how Dash, with 10k installs, squeezed onto the US Dating Top Grossing chart
What it is A "local dating" app for the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Germany. It hits a paywall after a few free messages and sells VIP plus in-app purchases at $4.99–$99.99.
Why it took off Paid acquisition started in October. The Dating category chart has a low bar, so three or four hundred installs a day gets you on. The paywall stacks charges, and each paying user pays a lot, so 10k installs is enough for the Top Grossing chart.
CHow you could follow Don't copy the dating vertical. What you can borrow is the mechanics: pick categories with a low chart bar and users willing to pay high prices for results, use a free trial built on a real service with a tiered paywall, start with paid acquisition, and treat the category Top Grossing chart as your scoreboard.

Dash is a dating app on Google Play for the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Germany. It launched in Aug 21 and had under 10k installs by Nov 6, yet ranked #65 on the US Dating Top Grossing chart, surrounded by older products with hundreds of thousands or millions of installs. There's nothing new about the product: behind it are a Chengdu team, a shell company at a London registered address, a paid acquisition budget, and a paywall that charges after three messages. Below: how it makes money, where the volume comes from, how many others use the same playbook, and whether you should follow it.
A 1-star review
In Oct 31, a US user left a 1-star review on Dash's store page. He said he had registered on several phones, and "the same 'person' messaged all my accounts at the same time, each showing a different location", followed by a batch of explicit videos sent to all his "fake accounts" at once. Last line: "nice try!!"
This isn't isolated. Another Oct 10 review says: "You get 3 messages, then the paywall. Everyone looks fake, too good to be true, all too close." In Oct 11 someone said they would report it to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The store page has 15 text reviews in total, and 11-06 of those... 1 five-star reviews make up 9 of them.
Yet the app's rating that same day was 4.7 stars from 278 ratings, of which 241 were 5-star, most with no written text.
What it is
On the store page, Dash is a perfectly ordinary "local dating" app: find singles nearby by interests and location, and when you like each other you match and chat. The copy reads "No endless pressure. No forced introductions. Just real profiles." Rated 17+, in-app purchases from $4.99 to $99.99, and the privacy policy mentions a "VIP subscription". Version 1.0.2, not updated since Sep 22.
What users actually encounter is different. Put the reviews together: as soon as you log in, a pile of "very close, very warm" profiles say hello first; after 3 free messages (some say 50) you hit a paywall; after paying for VIP, exchanging contact details and seeing the other person's location costs extra; without paying you can't even change the age filter. The "fake people" claim is currently only users' allegations, not tested, but the reviews describe a very common funnel in overseas dating apps: get male users "approached" first, then collect money once they're hooked.
Who made it
The developer is Dash Social Limited, a UK company, registered at Companies House in Aug 13, 8 days before the app launched. The registered address is 483 Green Lanes, London, a registered-address service with many unrelated companies. The sole director is a Chinese national born in 1963, with a correspondence address in Chengdu, and this is their only company, which looks like a nominee or family arrangement (inferred).
The contact email is Gmail, and the website dashx.club is a single-page template site launched in Aug 20. The privacy policy says "the US is the primary market" and integrates Kochava, an ad attribution tool that only products buying paid acquisition need. This developer has only this one app on Play.
10k installs, how does it chart in Top Grossing
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 9,992 (store shows 5,000+) | Google Play,11-06 |
| 7 new in the last day | 3,381, about +51%; recently 360–420 per day | Google Play, 10-30 to 11-06 |
| curve since launch | 10-01 only about 1,100; a sudden surge in mid-October, 10-18 to 10-20 at 650–780 per day | Third-party estimate (AppstoreSpy) |
| Top Free (Dating) | UK 45, US 48, Australia 65, Canada 72, Germany 79 | Google Play charts, 11-06 |
| Top Grossing (Dating) | US store, holding at 62–79 since 65,10-29 | Google Play charts |
Put these together and it's clear. First, the Dating category chart has a low bar: a few hundred installs a day can get you into the top 80 of several English-speaking free charts. Second, on the US Dating Top Grossing chart, the apps around it routinely have hundreds of thousands or millions of installs, while it has only 10k and still ranks #65. So the money doesn't come from volume, it comes from each paying user paying a lot: behind the paywall there are layers of separate charges, with in-app purchases reaching up to $99.99 (inferred). No public revenue figures exist, so monthly income can't be estimated.
Where users come from
Almost all of it is bought.
- Curve: after 40 days live it had only about 1 thousand installs, then a sudden surge in mid-October. That looks like a paid budget being switched on, not organic growth.
- The developer's own words: On Oct 9 someone left a 1-star review: "You said everything was free, you're lying." The developer replied: "We'll look into this, especially the ads run through our partners." In other words, they admitted partners were running ads for them, and those ads said "free."
- Attribution tool: Kochava, named in the privacy policy.
- Where it runs: not found. Searches of the Meta, Google and TikTok EU ad libraries turned up nothing for it. That doesn't mean it isn't advertising; creatives from ad networks and Google App ads are hard to see from outside.
- Content and word of mouth: TikTok, X and Reddit show no related content, and there's no press coverage.
Another layer: the 4.7 rating is held up mostly by 241 unlabeled 5-star ratings. It's likely a rating prompt in the app at moments like a fresh match, or possibly inflated, and outsiders can't tell (inferred). Nearly every negative review gets a templated reply; positive reviews go unanswered.
Who it's competing with
It isn't an originator. It's a smaller piece of an assembly line.
| Product | Launched | Scale | Its relationship to Dash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pullup: Meet Real Singles | 2026-03 | 149k installs, US Dating Top Grossing 22 | Nearly the same template: domains ending in "x", Gmail, a UK Ltd, $4.99–$99.99 in-app purchases; launched half a year earlier and already scaled up |
| Slip: Meet & Date Real Locals | 2026-06 | 44k installs, US Top Grossing 50 | Same model; UK company registered at the end of May, directors also in Chengdu |
| Rocco / Waffle / Luka | 2026-10 | Rocco 35k (7 days +28k), US Dating Top Free 3, Top Grossing 18 | Same-category paywall dating; one developer account launched three apps in a row, and its climb is much faster than Dash's |
| Emma: Meet & Bloom | 2026-08 | 14k, US Top Grossing 71 | Same period, same size, same playbook as Dash |
| Pairfect / Bliss / Alinfate and others | 2024–2025 | 140k–400k | Older overseas dating chat products with coins and gifts; in-app purchase caps up to $139–$999 |
| Tinder / Bumble / Hinge | 2012–2014 | Hundreds of millions of installs, US Top Grossing 1–3 | Has real users; Dash-style players can't match that |
Slip and Dash's directors are both in Chengdu, and the registration routines, domain style and price tiers are all the same. It's probably the same circle using the same service provider (inferred, circumstantial). This playbook is no secret in the going-global crowd: a UK shell company + template website + attribution tool + paywall, and when one account gets pulled, the next mask goes up.
The weak point of this business
The reviews already mention fake accounts, explicit content, and "we'll take this to the FTC." Apps like this have a high chance of being pulled by Google and facing heavy refunds and chargebacks, and their lifespan is often just a few months. That's why the same people keep launching new apps. How long Dash lasts depends on whether its paid acquisition math works and when Google moves.
If it were you
Verdict: C. You can learn the unit economics of "low-bar category chart + high-price paywall + paid acquisition," but copying it in dating isn't worth it. There's already a string of identical templates, behind which sit teams with mature service providers. The part that actually earns money (apparently fake profiles) is fraud, not gray area, and followers either can't pull it off or can't survive the takedowns and complaints.
Who it suits: teams already doing paid acquisition for going global, who have account matrices and payment channels and are already in this circle. Switch to a language or country that isn't crowded yet (for example Japanese, Korean or Latin American Spanish; not verified as empty) and launch another mask.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers who've never run ads (all traffic must be bought); anyone who wants a "real" dating product (real dating depends on user density, and cold start is far harder than this, with Tinder and co. holding the ground); anyone who cares about account and payment-channel safety.
How to do it (only the reusable parts): pick a category with a low bar on the category chart where people will pay a high price for a single result. It doesn't have to be dating: palmistry, emotional counseling, AI companionship, dream interpretation. Build the paywall around a service you actually deliver: a short free trial, key results behind payment, and in-app purchases in several tiers. Use that category's Top Grossing chart as the scoreboard, and see whether a few hundred installs a day can place you in the top 100.
How to acquire users: mainly paid, with an attribution tool connected. Start with a small budget in one English-speaking country, and work out the cost per install and the payback period per paying user. Don't write "totally free" in your ads; half of Dash's negative reviews come from that line.
Window: no clear window. People have always been doing this kind of category; the only difference is whether your paid acquisition math works.
What would show this read is wrong: ① Dash, Pullup and Slip aren't pulled over the next two to three months, and installs and Top Grossing rankings keep climbing. That would mean the playbook is more durable than it looks and worth re-evaluating. ② A comparable app using real people or real services (not fake profiles) reaches the top 50 of US Dating Top Grossing. That would mean the "real version" can survive at this price point, and the opportunity is bigger than written here.

Why Dash: Dating App, Match & Chat (com.dash.social.dating) ran up the charts
Channel: Google Play | Developer: Dash Social Limited (UK shell company, directors in Chengdu) | Launched: 2026-08-21 | Research date: 2026-11-06
Bottom line
Dash didn't climb on the strength of its product. It runs on an assembly-line playbook: a Chengdu-based team registers a shell company in the UK, uses a template to build a "local dating" app, buys paid installs (it integrates the Kochava attribution SDK, and the developer's review reply itself mentioned "ads placed through partners"), funnels male users into a paywall that charges after 3 free chats, and collects revenue through subscriptions and $4.99–$99.99 in-app purchases. The Dating Top Free and US Dating Top Grossing charts have a low bar, so a few hundred installs a day and modest revenue can squeeze it into the top 50–80. It has no differentiation. What's worth borrowing is the playbook itself, and a batch of nearly identical peers (Slip, Pullup, Rocco/Waffle and others) is already running it.

On the US Dating Top Grossing chart, the apps ranked just above and below it are mostly long-running products with tens to hundreds of millions of installs (Turn Up 4.22M, BiCupid 1.22M). It has only 10k installs and still ranks #65, which means each paying user spends a lot (paywall + high-priced in-app purchases), not that it has a big user base.
2. Who it is: a shell company plus a Chengdu team
- Companies House: DASH SOCIAL LIMITED (17397676), registered 2026-08-13, 8 days before the app was listed. The registered address is 483 Green Lanes, London N13 4FG, a mass-registration agent address with plenty of unrelated companies at the same location. The sole director is QIAO, Yu, Chinese national, with a correspondence address of "Chengdu, Yahe South 1st Road 99", born 1963, and this is the only company under their name. This looks like a nominee or family-member appointment. (Source: find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/17397676/officers)
- The contact email is Gmail ([email protected]). The website dashx.club is a single-page template site that went live in Aug 20 (mirror at dashsocialltd.com). The privacy policy names "United States as a primary market" and integrates the Kochava SDK for "performance, attribution", which is used for paid acquisition attribution.
- This developer has only this one app on Play (AppBrain and our library's developer table both show 1).
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (ad networks / affiliate partners) | Integrates the Kochava attribution SDK (per privacy policy). One 1-star review says "claimed free but requires payment", and the developer replied "We will investigate this issue, particularly regarding ads placed through partners", effectively admitting partners are running ads. The curve barely moves for 40 days after launch, then spikes in October, which looks like a budget being switched on, not organic growth. | Mostly confirmed (which specific platforms were used is unverified) |
| Meta / Google / TikTok EU ad libraries | Not in our metaads, googleads, or tiktokads libraries (the list didn't track it, which doesn't mean it wasn't advertised) | Not verified |
| Store search / chart exposure | Reached #45–80 on the Free Dating chart in 5 countries, a bit of natural chart traffic; the title stuffs in the keywords "Dating App, Match & Chat". | Partly (very small volume) |
| Review management / rating manipulation | 270 ratings, but only 14 come with text. The written reviews are mostly 1 stars (paywalls, fake accounts, one "person" messaging several phones at once, explicit videos). Yet the star distribution includes 231 wordless 5-star ratings. Most likely an in-app rating prompt fired right when users got "matched", or the ratings were bought. | Inferred, unverified |
| TikTok / X / Reddit content | Searching "dash dating app" on TikHub returns only unrelated content (The Dash podcast, etc.); x-radar over 60 days found 0 results for "dashx.club" and "Dash dating"; no media coverage. | Confirmed none |
4. Why users pay (the monetization mechanics)
Recent reviews (the latest 15 US-store reviews pulled via google-play-scraper) reveal the pattern:
- "you get 3 messages. then pay screen. all users seem fake. too good to be true. all too close."
- "they got fake accounts that make you spend more for nothing."
- "same 'person' messaged all my accounts at the exact same time… sexually explicit videos sent to all my fake accounts"
- "swapping contacts costs too much", "even paid members cannot share their location… unless you spend an obscene amount"
- One 1-star review threatens to report it to the FTC.
In short: new users (mostly men) are immediately hit with a flood of "nearby, very eager" profiles, chat for free for 3 messages (some say 50), then hit a paywall. After paying for VIP, exchanging contact info and seeing location cost extra. This is the standard funnel of overseas "fake profile / bot + paid chat" dating apps, with high ARPU, which is why 10k installs can reach the US Dating Top Grossing chart at #65. Refund, delisting, and complaint risk is also high.
5. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | Differences from Dash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tinder / Bumble / Hinge | iOS+Android | 2012–2014 | 530M / 130M / 41M installs, US Dating Top Grossing #1–3 | Real user base, brand; Dash has no real user density and relies on the paywall and suspected fake profiles |
| Pullup: Meet Real Singles(Arrow BC Ltd) | Android | 2026-03-12 | 149k installs, US Dating Top Grossing 22 | Nearly the same template: an "x" domain (pullupx.com), Gmail, a UK Ltd, $4.99–$99.99 in-app purchases; launched half a year earlier and already at scale |
| Slip: Meet & Date Real Locals(Zyphorora Ltd) | Android | 2026-06-05 | 44k installs, US Dating Top Grossing 50 | Same model: slipx.shop, Outlook email; UK company registered 2026-05-26, director Cheng CHI also in Chengdu. Dash and it are very likely in the same circle / using the same service provider |
| Rocco / Waffle / Luka(Silver State) | Android | 2026-10-13 / 10-20 / 10-26 | Rocco 35k (7 days +28k), Waffle 15k; US Dating Free #3/5, Top Grossing #14/18 | Paywalled dating in the same category, but scaling much faster, with one developer account publishing multiple personas |
| Emma: Meet & Bloom(TECHONDA LLC) | Android | 2026-08-27 | 14k, US Dating Top Grossing #71 | Same period and scale as Dash, same model |
| Alinfate, Pairfect, Bliss, Kistime, Flirio | Android | 2024–2026 | 15k–400k | Similar "overseas dating chat" products; some use coins / gifts, with in-app purchase ceilings of $199–$999 |
| Mid-sized indie dating apps like Hily, Boo, Once | iOS+Android | 2017–2019 | 9M–44M | Real users and brand advertising |
Bottom line: competition isn't the problem. Dash is one of the smaller operators in this pipeline.
6. Differentiation
No. Its pitch is "local-first, authentic profiles, slow pace", template copy nearly interchangeable with Slip's and Pullup's. It got this far through unrelated-to-product factors: ① paid acquisition; ② paywall + high-priced in-app purchases push up per-user value enough to cover acquisition costs; ③ the Dating category chart has a low bar, so small volume can still chart; ④ a UK company wrapper, targeting high-ARPU English markets like the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Germany.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue isn't public (no TrustMRR, no founder posting numbers); no media or major X accounts have written about it; only automated aggregators like AppBrain, Apptopia, and APKPure. "Few people know about it yet", but the playbook itself is openly discussed in overseas indie circles.
- Copycats: no one is really copying Dash, since it is itself a copycat. The same-template Pullup (March) and Slip (June) came earlier; Emma, Rocco/Waffle/Luka launched at the same time or later.
8. What to take from it / Risks
- Worth borrowing: UK Ltd + template site + attribution SDK for paid acquisition, then validate unit economics via the Dating category free / top-grossing charts; reply to every negative review with a template. Pick categories with a low chart bar and high ARPU (Dating reaches US Play Top Grossing #65 with very few payers).
- Risks: reviews mention "fake accounts", "explicit content", and "reporting to the FTC". Apps like this have a high chance of Google delisting and payment chargebacks, and typically last only a few months, which is why new personas keep appearing.
9. Still unclear
- Which platform the paid acquisition runs on (Meta / Google UAC / TikTok / ad networks) wasn't found in creatives; none of our three ad libraries index it.
- "Fake profiles / bots" is only an accusation in user reviews, not verified by testing.
- Whether the 231 text-less 5-star ratings come from an in-app prompt or manipulation can't be told apart.
- Whether it and Slip (also in Chengdu) or Pullup are the same company / the same outsourced operator is only circumstantial evidence (matching template, domain style, price range, and registration pattern).
- Whether there is an iOS version: searching the App Store for the same name found no clear match.
