90k installs, not a single rating: DramaPop is yet another "watch ads to unlock" shell in the short-drama export wave
What it is A vertical short-drama player for melodramatic series. You unlock episodes by watching ads. No in-app purchases.
Why it took off Short dramas have already been popularized by the big platforms in India and the Middle East. This one most likely bought traffic in these low-cost regions (installs jumping every two days, 90k installs with zero ratings), and may have ridden the search volume of the better-known Drama Pops.
DHow you could play it Not recommended. If you insist on getting in, avoid generic shells: target a local-language market the leaders haven't seriously covered, use licensed local content, or offer upstream services like subtitling, dubbing, or translating episodes for these shells.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-06 · 11-07 installs 90,711
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-31 → 2026-11-07 (8 days, 8 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
A developer account that previously only published civil engineering and bookkeeping apps launched a short-drama player in October, and it reached 86k installs in a week with not a single rating. It's not a product story, it's a distribution story: how hot the short-drama category is, how this kind of shell makes money, and why you'd most likely be the 80th entrant if you got in now.
Nov 3, +39k installs in one day
2026 Nov 2, DramaPop: Short Drama & Reel's Google Play install count was 13,863, identical to the day before. Nov 3 it became 52,769, up 38,906 in a day. Nov 4 was 0, Nov 5 +19,003, Nov 6 +18,939, and it stalled at 90,711 (Google Play install count, 11-06). It jumps every two days and stays flat in between.
On the same days, its ratings bar and reviews section were empty. 90k installs, and not one person left a star.
It only charted in two places: the India Entertainment Top Free chart, climbing from #166 in Oct 31 to #55 in Nov 5, and #59 on Nov 6; and the UAE Entertainment Top Free chart, sitting between #142 and #157 from Nov 4 onward (Google Play charts, 11-06). Nowhere else.
What it is
A vertical short-drama player. The first line of the store page reads "Hooked in seconds, obsessed for hours." The content is melodramatic series a few minutes per episode: domineering CEOs, contract marriages, hidden-identity heiresses, betrayal and revenge, rebirth. The description literally lists "the cold boss who melts only for you." The home page has a daily trending section and day/week/month/year charts, a For You vertical feed where you swipe to switch shows, 20 subtitle languages, 0.5x to 2x playback speed, 1080p to 540p resolution options, favorites and resume-watching.
The money comes from one place, stated in the second-to-last line of the description: "Some episodes can be unlocked by watching a short ad." No in-app purchases, no subscription.
Version 1.0.0, listed in October 6, updated once in October 7, and not touched since.
Who made it
The developer is DAICAT INDUSTRIAL COMPANY, a name that sounds like a Vietnamese company (inferred). It has three apps on Play: a civil engineering app named "DAICAT INDUSTRIAL COMPANY", a Money Tracker bookkeeping tool, and DramaPop (Google Play developer page, 11-06). The third-party site AppBrain shows the account was active for about 3 months. The developer website is an empty blogspot blog reading "No posts," with a gmail contact address.
Warm up an enterprise developer account with a utility app first, then publish the app you actually intend to monetize. That's a common pattern for shells like this (inferred, unverified). No one on the web, X, or TikTok appears to discuss this developer or this app.
Where the traffic comes from: it looks bought, not organic
Three signs stack together:
- Shape. Installs jump every two days and sit flat in between. Organic spread doesn't grow like that. It looks more like batch paid campaigns or offer-wall incentives (inferred).
- Zero ratings. 90k installs with not a single rating means almost none of the installers stuck around to use it seriously, or they weren't really there for this app (inferred).
- Only India and the UAE. Installs are cheap in both places, and short dramas have already been popularized there by ReelShort, DramaBox, ShareChat's QuickTV, and TikTok's PineDrama. Users already search for "short drama."
There may be another source: the name. "Drama Pops" is a better-known iOS short-drama app (run by dramapop.com, unrelated to this one), and there's a rumor online that it made "$600k a month from 40k downloads" (unverified). On Play there's also at least one nearly identical "DramaPop: Short Drama & Reels" from another company. Stuffing the package name and title with drama, reels, and shortdrama may pick up some store search traffic (inferred).
Its ads don't show up in public ad libraries, but those libraries cover a limited set of products and regions. Not finding ads there doesn't mean none were run.
Where the money comes from
Watch ads to unlock: each unlocked episode is one rewarded video ad. Short-drama users can binge dozens of episodes in one evening, so each user can generate many ad impressions, and installs in India are very cheap. The business earns the spread between "ad revenue from one user's lifetime" and "what it costs to acquire that user" (inferred; no specific figures are published). The content most likely comes from an off-the-shelf library of translated short dramas, and the copyright source is unclear (unverified).
Who it's competing with: dozens of near-identical apps
Short-drama export is already a red ocean. On Google Play, newly listed apps with drama or reel in the name numbered 85 in August, 74 in September, and 58 in October (Google Play new-listing counts, 11-06).
| Product | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | How DramaPop differs |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort, DramaBox | about 307M each; ReelShort +5.51M in the last 7 days | Original or licensed content, coin and subscription monetization, heavy paid acquisition |
| FreeReels / DramaWave | 246M / 152M | Also free with ads, but three orders of magnitude bigger |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | 84M, +7M in the last 3.01 days | Official TikTok product, traffic routed from within the app |
| QuickTV(ShareChat) | 92M | Indian homegrown, competing for the same Indian users directly |
| Halo Reels / Pro / Max | 12.3M / 8.2M / 5.68M | One shell type, one developer filing three packages |
| Drama World Pro | 730k, +7k in the last 690 days | Same shell type, same stair-step growth, with weekly volume 8 times DramaPop's |
| Dramivo | 8.77M | Same shell type, dramapop in the package name too, listed under Tools |
DramaPop's features and monetization are exactly the same as the bottom half of this table. In the last 7 days it got 86k installs, which doesn't rank among these shells. Ones that gained 500k to 1.4M in a single week are a dozen or more.
If it were you
Verdict: D. Understanding how this business runs is enough. Don't follow it. This app has nothing you can't learn from the outside, but there's also no open slot for you: similar shells launch dozens every month, the leading free short-drama platforms are three orders of magnitude bigger, and ShareChat and TikTok are both competing in India themselves.
Who it fits: Teams already running rewarded-video ad monetization, with cheap traffic channels, who can calculate ad revenue per user against acquisition cost, and who can absorb the app being pulled or the account being banned.
Who it doesn't fit: Indie developers who want to build a "product". Here the competition is about content libraries, acquisition costs, and account matrices, not the product. And anyone without legal content sources, since a copyright complaint gets the app removed.
How to do it: If you must get in, don't build another generic short-drama shell (rank #80). The only angle that makes sense is narrow: pick a language the top players haven't seriously covered for dubbing and local content (say, a regional Indian language or a Southeast Asian minor language), and secure licensed local content. Or skip the consumer app shell entirely and sell upstream services to these shells: translation, dubbing, and subtitling for their content.
How to get users: This category has no organic traffic, so you have to buy it. Incentivized installs and low-cost ads in India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Test a week with a small budget for retention and ad revenue per user, and stop if it doesn't pay back.
When to get in: There's no window here. Short-drama aggregator shells started piling in around July this year, so getting in now means entering at the most crowded point.
What would show this read is wrong: (1) DramaPop's installs climb into the millions a month later with a large number of real ratings, meaning it found traffic or content sources others don't have, and it's worth revisiting; (2) the leading short-drama platforms collectively tighten free episodes and move to pay-only, which would free up the "free with ads" users in low-cost markets; (3) Google Play mass-removes short-drama shells with unclear copyright, at which point small teams with licensed content would have an opening.

Channel: Google Play | Developer: DAICAT INDUSTRIAL COMPANY | Launched 2026-10-06 | Research day 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This app didn't break out on its own product merits. It's another "watch an ad to unlock" aggregator shell in the short-drama going-global niche. The version is still 1.0.0, it hasn't been updated once since launch, and the developer account previously published civil engineering and bookkeeping apps. In the last 7 days it gained 86k installs, growth came in steps, and 90k installs still have zero ratings. Its main charted presence is the Entertainment Top Free chart in India and the UAE, and it ranks low. That looks more like buying cheap volume in low-cost markets, or riding search traffic from the "DramaPop / Drama Pops" name, than organic discovery. Across the niche it's small: similar shell apps routinely add hundreds of thousands to over a million installs a week.

The database only shows that acquisition started around 10-29; the growth between 10-06 and 10-28 isn't visible.
2. Who the developer is
- The developer's Play page lists 3 apps:
com.daicatahndev.civilworks(app name "DAICAT INDUSTRIAL COMPANY", civil engineering),com.dc.moneytracker.budget.planner(Money Tracker bookkeeping), and DramaPop (source: Play developer page, fetched via r.jina.ai). - AppBrain lists this developer as "active for about 3 months" (appbrain.com search snippet).
- The name reads like a Vietnamese company (Dai Cat), the website is an empty blog, and the email is Gmail. This fits the pattern of "publish a few utility apps to build the account, then launch the main monetized app" (inferred, not verified).
- Nothing about this developer or app turns up online, on X (x-radar has 30 posts in the last 0 days), or on TikTok.
3. Competitors (doing the same thing)
Short drama going global is already a red ocean. Apps in the googleplay database with drama or reel in the name, by launch month: 2026-08 has 85, 09 has 74, 10 has 58.
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 2026-11-06) | How DramaPop differs |

| Halo Reels / Pro / Max(Nutri Plaza) | Android | 2026-07/08 | 12.3M / 8.2M / 5.68M installs | The same "ad aggregator shell" type, and one company runs three packages as a matrix |
| Drama World / Pro(Skylark Scan) | Android | 2026-07/09 | 3.93M / 730k installs; Pro 7 days +690k | Same-type shell, with a daily install series that also jumps in steps (10-31 +186k, 11-03 +320k) |
| ShortFly Pro / Max, DramaGo, ShortNext, AnyShort, MixReels | Android | 2026-07 to 09 | Each at 1.2M to 14M installs | Same shell type |
| Dramivo (Smart Net Tools Studio, package com.smartnettools.studio.dramapop) | Android | 2026-06 | 8.77M installs, filed under TOOLS | Same shape, package name also contains dramapop; the same developer also has a cleaning tool, EasyClean |
| DramaPop: Short Drama & Reels(Esame Marketing Limited,drama.shorts.reels…) | Android | Not verified | Not verified | Another app with an almost identical name |
| Drama Pops(iOS id6503891345)/ dramapop.com | iOS/web | 2024 | A Reddit post says "40k downloads, 600k USD a month" | A bigger product with the same name on a paid-wall model; no relation to this app |
Conclusion: there's no open slot in this niche. DramaPop matches FreeReels-type products and dozens of shell apps almost exactly, in features (trending chart, For You vertical feed, 20 subtitle languages, playback speed, quality settings, favorites, resume) and in monetization (watch-ad-to-unlock).
4. Growth tactics
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid / cheap acquisition (India, Gulf) | Installs jump in steps (+8,855 → +38,906 → +19,003 → +18,939), 90k installs with 0 rating, charted only in India and the UAE. It doesn't appear in the Meta, Google or TikTok ad libraries, but those libraries only track listed products, and the TikTok ad library only covers ads served in Europe, so not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't advertised. | No (inference) |
| Name piggybacking / store search | "DramaPop" and "Drama Pops" are already taken by known products (dramapop.com, the iOS app Drama Pops, whose revenue posts circulate on Reddit), and there's at least one other same-named app on Play. The package name and title are both packed with drama / reels / shortdrama keywords. | No (inference) |
| Overall heat of the short-drama category | Similar apps launch 50 to 85 new ones a month, and the top products run heavy paid acquisition in India and the Middle East. Users have already been trained. | Yes (library data) |
| TikTok / X / media / creators | Searching "DramaPop" on TikTok only returns dramapops (a different company) and repost accounts; x-radar has 0 posts; the web only has Play and APK mirror sites. | No (none found) |
Where the money comes from: there are no in-app purchases, only ad-unlocks and ad interstitials (AdMob-type). Install costs in India are low, short-drama users watch many episodes a day, and each episode unlock is a rewarded video, so the business runs on the gap between eCPM and CPI. The content most likely comes from a pool of translated short dramas, and the licensing source is unknown (not verified).
5. Why it got traction
- The category demand already exists: short dramas have been popularized in India and the Middle East by ReelShort, DramaBox, QuickTV, PineDrama and others, and users already search for "short drama".
- Free with ads to unlock beats a paywall for installs in low-price markets (FreeReels and Melolo already proved it).
- The growth shape looks like paid acquisition or an offer wall: installs jump in steps, zero ratings, few charting countries.
- The name may be riding DramaPop / Drama Pops search volume.
6. Differentiation
Almost nothing. Feature lists are standard for this category. "20 subtitle languages, app itself in 25 languages" in the description is also a common aggregator pitch. It gets installs not from differentiation but from category heat plus distribution: paid acquisition and borrowed names.
7. What can be borrowed
- The play itself: use an aged corporate developer account to ship a short-drama aggregator shell for a 1.0.0, monetize with ads only, buy cheap traffic in India and the Middle East to capture the eCPM spread, and stack multiple Pro / Max packages to build a matrix (Halo Reels, ShortFly and Drama World all do this). Low barrier, but dozens of similar apps already exist; the risks are copyright takedowns and account bans.
- Takeaway for us: this is not a new opportunity. 7 days and 86k installs doesn't rank in this category, and over a dozen similar shell apps have gone from 500k to 1.4M weekly.
8. Still unclear
- Install curve from 10-06 to 10-28 (the library only starts recording from 10-29).
- Whether it actually ran ads and on which channels; whether it used offer walls or incentivized installs.
- Where the content comes from and whether it's licensed; how much retention and revenue per user it gets.
- What the relationship is to the nearly identically named DramaPop by Esame Marketing (most likely no relationship; it's the same name-borrowing).
