480k installs in six weeks, 3.2 stars: Dramix isn't a short-drama app, it's the seventh shell from a Vietnamese tool-app factory
What it is: a free Android app for vertical short dramas that makes money from ads and VIP subscriptions. It's one of seven identical shells from the Vietnamese company VTN Global.
Why it's growing: it runs paid acquisition using clips from popular short dramas, buying in batches and rotating across countries. Users first get monetized through ads (including suspected lock-screen and home-screen ads). The catalog is shared across all seven shells, so costs stay low.
CHow you could follow it: don't build the Nth drama-catalog shell. If you have paid acquisition and monetization experience, do the half it does badly: play the exact drama you bought traffic for, use properly licensed content, keep ads from pushing users out before they finish a show, and work out the unit economics in cheap countries first.

Dramix hit Google Play at the end of September. Six weeks later it has nearly 490k installs, about half from the last seven days. The product itself isn't new: vertical short dramas, free to watch, ad-supported. It's growing fast because the Vietnamese company behind it treats short-drama clips as cheap, effective ad creative. The same catalog is published under seven names from seven developer accounts and rotated through paid campaigns. Below: how the playbook works, where the money comes from, and whether you should follow it.
A 175-person-upvoted one-star review
On 2026 Oct 17, US user Phyllis Wilson left a review on Dramix's store page:
"Way too many ads. An ad on my screen told me to download this app, but once I got in I couldn't find the show from the ad. False advertising that plays on marketing psychology. Waste of time!"
By Nov 6, this review had 175 helpful votes and was the top review on Dramix's page. The second and third were posted the next day (10-18):
"Don't pretend!!! This junk app takes over your phone. It opens itself every time you turn the phone on, wastes data, and is so annoying." (74 helpful) "As soon as I installed it, it asked me to set it as a home app, and now it opens every time I start my phone... no thanks!" (38 helpful)
On another shell from the same company, "Short Drama: Movie & Series", the most helpful review (339 helpful, 9-11) spells out the funnel more bluntly: "I saw a clip of a show on TikTok, downloaded this app, and all I got was ads. There are hundreds of shows, and the one from the TikTok video isn't there."
Taken together, the three reviews make the business clear: users are pulled in by ads for a short-drama clip, then mostly see ads once inside, and some are pushed to set it as their home app. It doesn't keep people. It makes each acquired user watch enough ads before they delete it.
What it is
On the store page, Dramix's developer is listed as Astral Core, and the "About the developer" section says NGUYEN DINH DUC, with an address in a village in Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province, Vietnam. The same account publishes several other apps: a VPN browser, an auto-clicker, and a charging lock screen. That's a typical Vietnamese tool-app account. The first line of the description reads "100% original productions created in-house by VTN Global" (100% of content produced in-house by VTN Global).
VTN Global describes itself as a Vietnamese company making phone tool apps (screen mirroring, blood pressure logging, phone location), and claims over 100M installs. Its website getdramix.com says you can watch without signing up, for free and with ads, and can buy a VIP subscription to remove ads and unlock all episodes, with "no coins". The store lists "Contains ads + in-app purchases", priced at $8.99–$15.99.
How it grew: step by step
| Date | Cumulative installs (est.) |
|---|---|
| 9-27 | Launched |
| 10-08 | About 2,200 |
| 10-12 | About 42k (up 33k in one day) |
| 10-25 | About 162k (up 66k in one day) |
| 10-27 | About 242k |
| 10-31 | About 326k |
| 11-03 | About 424k |
| 11-06 | About 488k |
Source: the October figure is an AppstoreSpy estimate; from 10-29 onward these are daily Google Play install observations. The tier shown on the store page is "100k+".
The curve doesn't rise smoothly. It jumps a step every few days and then stalls, which is what batch-bought ads look like, not word of mouth. A second clue is ratings: 20–40 new ratings a day against tens of thousands of installs, a rate of about one in a thousand. Cold users bought through ads usually look like this.
It has never appeared on any country's grossing chart. The Entertainment Top Free chart 11-06 has a ranking in 17 countries, with its best being Hong Kong #38, UAE 46, Mexico 52, France 68, and the US 111. The US dropped from #63 in 10-29 to 111, while over the same period France rose from 179 to 68 and Mexico from 197 to 52. The spend appears to be shifting from expensive countries to cheaper ones (inference).
Searching "Dramix" on TikTok finds no organic videos, and nobody on X has mentioned it in the last 60 days. No media coverage, and no disclosed revenue.

Google Play installs, 11-06.
Signs that it's one operation: Dramix and Dramify were published on the same day, and their package names just reorder the same words (com.drama.short.video.story.series.pro and com.short.drama.video.series.story.app). Their websites are getdramix.com and getdramify.com. Every drama poster on getdramix.com comes from VTN's own image server, and the other sites share one template. An account named "Khanh Hoa Environment Joint Stock Company" also publishes a short-drama app, most likely a bought older company account.
The names were chosen too. "Dramix" was already the name of an existing short-drama app on Play, and "Dramify" shares its name with an app that has 3.97M installs. The new shells borrow established names to pick up some search traffic (inference; how much is unclear).
Where the money comes from
Mostly ads. The website itself says it is "free and ad-supported", VIP subscriptions are optional, and it has never charted on a grossing list, so paying users aren't the main revenue.
Those comments about "launches on boot" and "set me as wallpaper" point to lock-screen and home-screen ad slots: the app fires whenever the user unlocks or returns to the home screen, so it gets several more ad impressions a day. Vietnamese utility-app studios use this to lift ad revenue per user. The same account, Astral Core, also has a "charging lock screen" app. It sits in a gray zone of Google Play policy, and removal is a real risk.
The business math is simple (inferred): buy cheap traffic from emerging markets and Europe/US, then let interstitial, rewarded-video and lock-screen ads earn back more than the install cost before the user deletes the app. Keep spending while that holds. The content library is shared across seven shells, so content cost is spread thin. When one shell gets too many bad reviews, gets throttled, or is pulled, the next shell takes over. 3.2-star ratings aren't a problem for it; they're part of the design.
Who it's competing with
This is one of the most crowded categories on Google Play.
At the top are original-content platforms that produce their own shows, buy rights, and charge per episode: ReelShort (307M installs, +5.51M in the last 7 days, #10 on Vietnam's Top Grossing), DramaBox (307M, #6 on Malaysia's Top Grossing), Kunlun's FreeReels (246M) and DramaWave (152M), NetShort, Melolo, ShortMax, GoodShort, and ByteDance's PineDrama, launched at the end of 2025 (84M, +3.01M in the last 7 days). FreeReels, Melolo and PineDrama already run "free + ads", so Dramix's website line "watch free, no coins" is not a selling point.
Below that is the layer Dramix sits in. Since 2026 July, dozens of Play apps with "drama" or "reels" in the name have appeared, many under developer names of Vietnamese construction, environmental and trading companies (Hai Phong architectural design, Viet-Nhat group construction, Hoa Binh productions...). Halo Reels has reached 12.3M installs and also runs Pro and Max sister apps; ShortFly has Pro / Max too; ShortNext and Dramix launched the same day. At 488k installs, Dramix is mid-to-low tier within this layer.
Google Play installs, 11-06.
Why it works
- The demand was created by big players spending heavily. ReelShort, DramaBox and others put clips of "domineering CEO", "revenge" and "after the divorce" storylines in front of everyone on TikTok and Facebook, and those clips already get high click-through. Small shells use similar clips as creatives, and users assume tapping through will let them watch the full show.
- Utility-app factories already do paid acquisition and ad monetization. Short drama is just a new creative category for them. One backend can be copied across seven accounts, so losing a single shell costs little.
- No sign-up, free viewing and ad monetization mean every bought user can be monetized immediately, and lock-screen and home-screen placements push ad impressions per user higher still.
- It doesn't need retention. Bad reviews, low ratings and a lifespan of a month or two are handled by constantly launching new shells and rotating countries.
If it were you
C. This is an arbitrage business built on paid user acquisition. It's worth understanding, not worth copying. The playbook itself isn't hard, but dozens of companies are already following it, and the real costs (a usable content library, a team that can run acquisition and monetization, a pool of developer accounts that won't get banned) are probably ones you don't have. The part that makes money sits on the gray line of Play policy and content rights.
Who it suits: teams that already run utility-app acquisition, have AdMob or ad-network monetization experience, and can get cheap drama sources (for example by licensing in bulk from overseas short-drama distributors), who want to test it as a new creative category inside an existing portfolio.
Who it doesn't suit: one or two people with no ad-buying experience; anyone building a long-term product that depends on word of mouth and retention (users here come to finish one show and then delete the app); anyone who can't handle accounts being banned or apps being removed.
How to do it, if you must test: don't build the Nth "has everything" drama library shell. The half worth betting on is the half the others do badly. The most common complaint in reviews is "can't find the show from the ad". Ads should point to the exact show they feature, and the first episode should play immediately with no ad in front. Use properly licensed sources, keep ad density at a level where users will still finish a show, and unlock revenue through VIP ad removal and rewarded video. Language is another opening: Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and Indonesian dubbed or subtitled short dramas look less saturated by big players than English does (inferred, not checked language by language).
How to acquire users: as Dramix does, buy traffic with vertical short-drama clip videos on TikTok, Facebook and in-app ad networks. Start with small budgets in cheap markets like Mexico, Brazil and Southeast Asia, measure the cost per install and seven-day ad revenue, and scale up once half the cost is recovered within seven days (inferred). Store titles should target search terms like "short drama" and "reels".
Deadline: shells in this layer only appeared in large numbers after July and are still accelerating. If you test this, aim to have a workable unit economics model by year-end. The window closes once Google starts mass-removing these apps, or once big players cut free-plus-ads prices even lower.
Where this analysis could be wrong: (1) Dramix, Dramify and the other shells launched between 9 and October get removed or stop growing installs before the end of 2026, meaning Google is tightening and the window is shorter than it looks; (2) the reverse: Halo Reels, VTN and similar portfolios keep launching new apps in Q1 of 2027, with individual apps still passing a million installs, meaning the unit economics are better than estimated and the math should be redone; (3) ReelShort, DramaBox or PineDrama launch "watch the full series with ads" and spend heavily on TikTok, which removes the hook small shells rely on.
Final thought for anyone building products: when a content category has been educated by big players spending heavily, the ones who earn the first "free + ads" money are often not the content makers. They're the utility-app factories that were already buying traffic. The next time you see a major player's creatives filling TikTok for some category, go search Google Play for how many new shells with similar names have appeared.

Why Dramix: Short Drama Series (com.drama.short.video.story.series.pro) showed up in the analysis
In one line: this isn't a new short-drama platform. It's one account in the "short-drama reskin portfolio" run by Vietnamese utility-app factory VTN Global. The same backend and the same content library are published in bulk under several developer accounts and names (Dramix / Dramify / Short Drama: Movie & Series / Daily Short Dramas / EpiScene...). It buys users with short-drama clips as creatives, then recovers costs through ads (including suspected lock-screen / home-screen hijacking formats) and VIP subscriptions. It "took off" because of its distribution playbook, not its product.
1. Basic data (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)
- The developer account is Astral Core. The store's "About the developer" section lists NGUYEN DINH DUC, based in Nghe An province, Vietnam, with contact email [email protected] and support email [email protected]. Other apps on the same account: Private VPN Browser Proxy, Auto Clicker, Battery Charging Lock Screen, typical of Vietnamese utility-app accounts (source: Play store pages, scraped via Jina 2026-11-06).
- First listed on the store 2026-09-27. Cumulative installs in the library 487,555, +245,992 in the last 7 days (about half arrived in the most recent week). 710 ratings, 3.2 stars. The store listing says "Contains ads + in-app purchases", with IAP at $8.99–$15.99.
- Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates, googleplay.app_day_ext): 10-08 about 2,196 → 10-12 jumps to 42,008 (+33k in a single day) → 10-20 57k → 10-25 162k (+66k in a single day) → 10-27 241k → 11-03 424k → 11-06 488k. It moves in discrete steps rather than the smooth curve organic word of mouth produces, which looks like batched campaigns.
- Rating growth: about +20–40 per day. Against tens of thousands of installs a day, the rating rate is very low (about 0.1%), consistent with cold users acquired through paid ads.
- Charts: no Top Grossing records at all; best showing is Free Entertainment category chart at HK 38, AE 46, MX 52, FR 68, US 111 (17 countries). US store slipped from #63 on 10-29 to #111 on 11-06, while France climbed 179→68 and Mexico 197→52 — paid acquisition is moving to other stores.
2. Competitors: this is one of the most crowded categories on all of Google Play
Leading original short-drama platforms (Google Play library, cumulative installs / last 7 days): ReelShort 307M / +5.51M (2022); DramaBox 307M / +2.92M (2023); FreeReels 246M / +3.64M, DramaWave 152M (Kunlun Skywork, 2024); NetShort 162M; Melolo 147M (2024); ShortMax 131M; GoodShort 99M; ByteDance's PineDrama 84M / +3.01M (2025-12 on the chart); Kuku TV, QuickTV (ShareChat), Rigi TV and other India-linked apps. These companies produce or license their own content and appear on Top Grossing charts (ReelShort at #10 in Vietnam, DramaBox at #6 in Malaysia).
Similar "reskin matrix" apps (launched after 2026-07, names with drama/reels, dozens in the library): Halo Reels / Pro / Max (Nutri Plaza, 12.3M / 8.2M / 5.68M), ShortFly / Pro / Max (Conservative Authority), MixReels 14M, Drama World, AnyShort, NiceTV, ShortNext / DramaGo (same developer Infinity Store; ShortNext and Dramix both launched on 9-27)... Many developer names are Vietnamese construction / environment / trading companies (HAIPHONG CONSTRUCTION DESIGN, VIET NHAT GROUP CONSTRUCTION, HOA BINH PRODUCTION...), classic "buy an old company account and bulk-publish" behavior. Dramix at 488k is only mid-to-low in this pile.
VTN's own matrix (apps whose Google Play listing says "VTN Global", 7 in total):
| App | Developer account | Launched | Installs | last 7 days |

| Short Drama: Movie & Series | Style Of Me - VTN Global | 2026-04-17 | 2,224,757 | +430,218 |

Evidence they're one setup: Dramix and Dramify launched the same day, with package names that just swap word order (com.drama.short.video.story.series.pro / com.short.drama.video.series.story.app), official sites getdramix.com / getdramify.com. The other sites are netlify template sites (shortdrama521by4 / by2...). getdramix.com's posters all come from img.vod-dev-vtn.com, and page assets come from webapps-assets.pages.dev/apptest-dramix-shortdrama. VTN Global (vtn.global) describes itself as a Vietnamese company making phone utility apps (screen casting, blood pressure, phone location), claiming 100M+ installs. On iOS there's also "VTN GLOBAL LTD - Reel Short - Mini Drama Shorts".
Name piggybacking: "Dramix" is already the name of an existing short-drama app (Dramix - Popular short dramas, package com.iw.short.drama.dramix.aos; there's also a DraMix on iOS), and Dramify has a same-name app with 3.97M installs (com.drama.reels.dramify). New listings borrow an established brand name to catch store search traffic. Effect not verified.
3. Growth tactics
- Short-drama clip creative for paid acquisition / traffic (confirmed, from user reviews): Dramix's most useful review (174 people marked it helpful, 2026-10-17): "The ad on screen got me to download, then I couldn't find that drama inside. False advertising." A review on the same matrix's Short Drama: Movie & Series (337 people found it helpful): "Downloaded the app after seeing a clip of a show on TikTok, opened it and it's all ads, can't find the show from TikTok." So they use clips of popular dramas (likely cuts or lookalikes of hits from ReelShort / DramaBox type apps) as creative, run them in ad slots on TikTok / Facebook / other apps, and land on Play.
- Ad libraries: Our Meta and TikTok ad libraries have not tracked Dramix / Astral Core / VTN (those libraries only track listed products, and TikTok only shows European ads, so not finding them doesn't mean they aren't advertised). Searching "dramix" on TikTok and "Dramix" on x-radar (60 days) both return 0 results: no organic content and no creator spread.
- Multi-account matrix + rotating storefronts (confirmed): The same library runs at least 7 account shells. Dramix's US ranking has slipped while it rises in Mexico, Brazil and Hong Kong, suggesting the spend is moving to cheaper storefronts.
- Store search / name piggybacking: Names and package names are packed with short / drama / video / story / series keywords, plus the existing Dramix brand, to catch Play search long-tail traffic (inferred, scale not verified).
4. Where the money comes from
- Ad monetization as the core: The store listing is marked "contains ads"; the official site says "free, ad-supported, optional VIP subscription (ad-free, unlock all episodes), no coins." Reviews: "pops up on its own when I turn on the phone" (73 people found it helpful), "after installing it wants to be set as a default app / opens every time the phone starts" (37 people found it helpful). This suggests lock-screen / launcher-style forced ad placements, a common way in the Vietnamese utility-app scene to raise per-user ad impressions (the same account also has "Battery Charging Lock Screen"). It's also a gray area under Play policy, with takedown risk.
- VIP subscription / unlock: IAP $8.99–$15.99, but no top-grossing chart record at all, so payments are not the main engine.
- The model in essence: cheap acquisition (emerging markets plus rotating Western markets) → monetize with interstitial / rewarded video / lock-screen ads. Keep spending while LTV > CPI. The content library is reused across multiple shells, spreading content cost.
5. Differentiation
- It claims "100% made by VTN Global", "no sign-up needed", "no coins, watch free with ads." Compared with ReelShort / DramaBox's "pay per episode with coins," this is "ads in exchange for free", which is a hook ad creative can use ("watch free to the end"). But the same line and the same library appear in 7 shells, and FreeReels, Melolo, PineDrama and other big products are also going free + ads, so for users there's no real difference.
- The real "difference" is on the supply side: a utility-app factory treats short drama as a high-CTR acquisition creative category and copies it through an account matrix. That's why it runs, not because of the product.
- 3.2 stars, with reviews concentrated on "all ads, can't find the drama from the ad, hijacks the phone." Retention is likely very poor, single-account lifespan is short, and it relies on constantly opening new accounts to pass the baton.
6. How many people have seen it
- No public revenue, no media or X coverage, no organic TikTok content. As a single app it's "barely known"; but this play (Vietnamese account matrix with short-drama shells) is already a red ocean on Play, with dozens of similar apps in the library at the same time. Halo Reels and ShortFly have already built Pro / Max multi-account versions.
7. Worth borrowing / uncertain
- Worth borrowing: in content verticals, "big players spend to educate users → small teams intercept with free + ad shells"; running multiple accounts, packages and storefronts from one backend with rotating spend; templated official / landing sites (pages.dev / netlify); riding existing brands and search terms in the name.
- Risks: creative that doesn't match the landing content, lock-screen hijacking, and whether "self-made" content is really original can all bring Play takedowns or copyright complaints. Not replicable as a moat for anyone wanting a long-term product.
- Unverified: whether the content is really VTN-made (show titles on the posters like "I Divorced a Poor Plumber…" look like common overseas short dramas; copyright not verified); the channel mix of spend (TikTok / Meta / AdMob networks), CPI and ad eCPM are all unverified; whether the shells are run by the same entity (account names and addresses differ; judged only from the shared backend domain and copy, high confidence but not official confirmation).
