Short drama app with 1M installs in three weeks: Dramaly is a mold from a Vietnamese assembly line
What it is A vertical short-drama streaming app made by a small Vietnamese team: CEO romance, revenge, and sweet romance dramas. The first few episodes are free; after that you watch ads or buy coins.
Why it took off Starting Oct 29, it began buying Meta installs globally. It rode the short-drama category's momentum and the low bar of small-country category charts, pushing installs to 1.11M in three weeks. The product itself has no differentiation, and users barely leave reviews.
CHow you could copy it Not recommended. If you do it anyway, the only real difference can come from the content: get a library in a language or genre the big platforms haven't worked hard on, then run the same Meta paid acquisition and small-country chart push.

Dramaly has been live on Google Play for three weeks, with over 1M installs, and is charting in the Entertainment category in 18 countries at once. It looks like a dark horse. Look closer and it's one of about 160 copies of the same "shell" short-drama app on Google Play: a template app, a borrowed developer name, global Meta paid acquisition, and pushing small-country category charts. The playbook is worth studying, but it's not one for indie devs to follow.
A review stuck on choosing a language
In Oct 2026 17, a user named whitney scott left a comment on Dramaly's store page: 「can't seem to get past choosing language」 (stuck on the language selection screen, can't get past it). By Nov, 6,92 people had marked it helpful, making it the most-upvoted review on the app. The second-ranked review, from Oct 18, has 72 helpful votes: 「I watched a clip of that dirty man with long hair and a big beard, and it looked good. I just don't know if there are ads, and I hate ads.」 A third says 「they're good books, I just love fantasy」, treating it as a novel app.
All three reviews say the same thing: most people arrive after seeing a short clip, tap in, and nobody knows or cares who made the app.
At the same time, its numbers are climbing. Google Play global cumulative installs went from 786k in Oct 29 to 1.12M in Nov 6, up 331k in a single week.
What it is
It's a vertical short-drama player. The store description reads "CEO romance, urban revenge, sweet love stories" (alpha-male CEO romance, urban revenge, sweet romance, costume dramas), plus "Thousands of trending short dramas, updated daily." The first few episodes are free. After that you unlock by watching ads or buying coins, with in-app purchases from $3.99 to $79.99 (Google Play store page, 11-06).
The developer is listed as "Pol Teams", the contact email is a Gmail address with a Vietnamese name, and the website and privacy policy are hosted for free on Firebase at dramaly-e95d3.web.app. The privacy policy is a generic template that still contains clauses about "forums, multiplayer, friends lists", which have nothing to do with short dramas. According to IndieTower's records, Pol Teams has 7 apps on Google Play. The rest are utilities like VoxLock, Rock ID and Emoji Maker, and Dramaly is the biggest of them.
The Google Play listing date is Oct 15, but APKPure shows the same package name with a May 23 release already at 1.0.3 versions, updated all the way to 1.2.x. The package existed by May at the latest, so 10-15 is more likely a storefront change or a relisting that reset the date. I couldn't find what it was called before or which countries it was on.
Where the 1M installs came from
Meta ads, started Oct 29. Two Facebook pages are running ads for it in Meta's ad library, "Dramaly Film" and "Dramaly Short": 17 ads in total, 16 creative sets. As of Nov 4, 11 are still running, and the earliest started in Oct 29. The copy is one line, "Watch more great episodes on Dramaly now!". Targeting is Worldwide, with placements across Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and Threads. Reach in the EU is only about 1,200 people (Meta ad library, 11-04), so most of the spend is outside the EU.
The install curve lines up with the ad launch. Play counts installs in lumpy batches, so Oct 31 jumped 101K in one go, then Nov 3 jumped 136K (Google Play installs, rolled up over several days).
Charted in 18 countries' Entertainment category charts. It sits on the "Entertainment · Free" chart in 17 to 19 countries on any given day and has never reached the overall or Top Grossing chart anywhere. Its best rank was #17 in Spain (11-02, 11-03). In Nov 6 it hit Hong Kong 24, Nigeria 38, the US 44, Italy 49, Sweden 55, and the Netherlands 57. These are storefronts where the category chart is easy to crack: a few tens of thousands of installs can land you in the top 50, and charting picks up a bit of free store exposure on top of that.
Store search (inferred). The name is Dramaly, the description is stuffed with terms like short drama, CEO romance and revenge, and Play's "similar apps" lists it alongside HoneyReels, JoyReels and StardustTV. It gets some search traffic, but the share is not visible.
Channels with no presence. Searching TikTok for "Dramaly" turns up no videos, nobody mentions it on X, and there is no press coverage. What you can find online is only APK sites and auto-generated pages from app data sites.
Did users stick around?
Almost no trace. 1.12M installs produced only 471 ratings, about 4.2 per 10,000 installs. For comparison: ReelShort has 64.5, DramaBox 184, FreeReels 83 (Google Play data, 11-06).
The ratings are split at the extremes: 1 one-star reviews 201, 5 five-star 214, with 2 to 4 stars adding up to 54 in total, averaging 3.09. The middle tiers are almost empty, which looks like half the users felt cheated and the other half tapped five stars on the way out. That distribution, plus the very low review density, usually means the installs were mostly bought: people tap in, watch two episodes, and leave (inferred).
Whether the content is owned, licensed or reposted is unverified. Apps like this usually buy licenses in bulk from small platforms or simply use other companies' shows.
Where the money comes from
In-app purchases (coins or membership, up to $79.99 per item) plus ads. It has never charted in any country's top-grossing list. The third-party site ShortDramaData ranks it #45 globally among paid short-drama apps (11-06). The usual playbook for apps like this is to hook people with free early episodes, recover money through rewarded ads and coins, and then put it back into Meta to buy the next batch of users. The return on that spend is not visible from outside.
Who it's competing with
Short drama is one of the most crowded app categories of the last few years, roughly in three tiers:
| Tier | Examples | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How Dramaly differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top platforms | ReelShort, DramaBox | Each about 307M installs; ReelShort grew 5.51M in a week | They make their own shows, hold rights, and have a brand |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Kunlun) | 246M | Free viewing with ads. Same playbook, but budgets orders of magnitude bigger | |
| PineDrama (TikTok), NetShort, ShortMax, GoodShort | 0.8–160M | Big companies or Chinese firms going global, with their own libraries and traffic | |
| Mid-tier | FreeDrama, BlinkDrama, StoryReel, VibeShort | 10M–43M | Real companies, some have hit top-grossing charts |
| Shell apps (Dramaly's tier) | Halo Reels Pro / Max, ShortFly Pro, NiceTV, AuraReel, LumaReel, DramaGo, ReelSaga, EmberDrama…… | Each 100k–8M | Exactly the same approach |
The last tier is easy to spot: listed 40 to 80 days, developer email a Gmail address with a Vietnamese name, website hosted on netlify, web.app or blogspot, and developer names often borrowed from unrelated Vietnamese companies (pharma plants, architecture firms), with one team shipping a Pro and a Max version. Using these markers, about 90 short-drama shell apps on Google Play have been listed for less than 160 days. Together they have 64.6M installs, and in the last 7 days they gained 13.1M combined (Google Play data, 11-06). AuraReel, LumaReel and EmberDrama each have 32 to 42 ads running on Meta.
So saying Dramaly was "copied" isn't accurate. It is running on the same production line as a very large group of apps, and it isn't the biggest one in that group.
What it got right
There's no visible product differentiation: the genre, vertical format, and coins-plus-ads model are identical to ReelShort, and the execution is weaker (3.1 stars, stuck on choosing language). What it runs on is three things stacked together:
- Short drama is a hot category worldwide, and users have already been trained by the big platforms, so a single alpha-male CEO clip is enough to make people tap install.
- Google Play's small-country category charts have low barriers. A template app plus global Meta ads can chart in 18 countries at once within three weeks.
- Vietnamese white-label teams have a mature production line: borrow a company identity, reuse a template, buy traffic, push charts, and when one account dies, switch to the next (inferred).
If it were you
Verdict: Don't copy it. This is a paid-acquisition arbitrage business, and about 160 identical packages already exist in this lane. The real barriers are the content and the ad team, not the app. What you can take is the method, not the category.
Who it suits: Someone who already has short-drama content (self-produced, or cheap bulk licensing they can actually get) and an ad buyer who can track Meta acquisition costs to the decimal, and who wants a business where installs are bought and revenue comes from coins and ads.
Who it doesn't suit: Indie devs who only write code; anyone without content or planning to use shows of unclear origin (takedown and infringement risk for this kind of app sits entirely on the content); anyone hoping to grow through word of mouth and organic traffic (4 ratings per 10,000 installs means there is no word of mouth here).
How to do it (if you must): Don't build the 161th generic English short-drama shell. The only real difference can come from content: a localized library in a language or community the big platforms haven't seriously targeted, such as a dubbed version in a minor language, or short dramas on a religious or regional theme. Use the simplest template, free early episodes, and coin unlocks afterward.
How to acquire users: Same as Dramaly: global Meta ads, with creatives built from the most intense ten-odd seconds of the show (the "long-haired bearded man" from the reviews is the image people remember after clicking an ad). Pick countries with low category chart barriers and push to chart to spread the cost across chart exposure. Before launch, fix the first-screen language-selection trap, since 92 people already showed you how fatal it is.
When to move: There's no clear window. The big platforms and these 160 shells keep adding volume every week, so the later you buy traffic, the more it costs.
What would show this read is wrong: ① Several of these shell apps entered a country's top-grossing chart before 2027 January, which would mean coin recovery really works and the math should be redone. ② Dramaly's installs keep rising by a few thousand a day after ads stop, which would mean category chart exposure is worth more than it looks. ③ The reverse: if most of these apps are pulled within a month or two, Google Play is cleaning house, and this path is closed.
A closing note for anyone scanning the charts for opportunities: when installs climb fast, first check how many ratings there are per 10,000 installs, whether the developer email is Gmail, and whether the website is hosted on free hosting. If all three are true, it's most likely an ad business, not a product.

Why Dramaly (com.dramaly.shortfilm) made it onto the charts
Data as of 2026-11-06. Sources: our googleplay / metaads / googleads libraries (agent-im server), third-party sites IndieTower, AppDashboard, ShortDramaData, APKPure, and the Google Play store page.
Bottom line
Dramaly is a Vietnamese-made "shell" short drama app, not a new product format. There are 160 other apps on Google Play using the same playbook (listed less than 90 days ago, developer uses a gmail address, website hosted on Firebase / Netlify / Blogspot, per our library count). It reached 1.1M installs thanks to global Meta paid acquisition starting in late October, entertainment chart spread across 18 countries, and the short drama category itself being hot. Users barely leave reviews (4 ratings per 10K installs), and about half of those are 1-star. There's no visible product differentiation.
1. Basics
- What it is: A vertical short drama player with CEO romance, urban revenge, sweet romance, and period drama genres. IAP at $3.99–$79.99 per item, with ads (googleplay.app_snap, 2026-11-06).
- Developer: "Pol Teams", contact email [email protected] (a Vietnamese name). The website and privacy policy are both on Firebase free hosting at dramaly-e95d3.web.app. The privacy policy is a generic template that still mentions clauses about "forums, multiplayer, friend lists" that have nothing to do with short dramas. IndieTower shows Pol Teams has 7 other apps on Play, the rest being utilities like VoxLock, Rock ID, and Emoji Maker. Dramaly is the biggest of them (indietower.com/apps/android/com.dramaly.shortfilm).
- Listing date: Play shows 2026-10-15. On APKPure, the same package name already had a version in May 23, with 1.0.3 versions, updated steadily from 6 through October to 1.2.3 (apkpure.com/dramaly/com.dramaly.shortfilm/versions). This means the package existed at least since May; 10-15 is likely the date it was re-listed or the date it expanded to new storefronts. Which storefronts it was on before, and under what name, has not been verified.
- Install curve (googleplay.app_day, precise global cumulative installs): | Date | Cumulative installs | Ratings | Average | |---|---|---|---| | 10-29 | 785,812 | 227 | 2.77 | | 10-31 | 886,846 | 282 | 2.83 | | 11-03 | 1,022,597 | 376 | 3.14 | | 11-06 | 1,116,593 | 471 | 3.09 | Up 331k over the last 7 days, averaging 4–50k per day. AppDashboard estimates it gained 604k over the last 30 days. IndieTower saw the store tier go from "500k+" around 10-19 (actually about 526k) to "1M+" on 11-06.
- Charts: Charted daily in 17–19 countries' Entertainment category chart under Free, never on an overall or Top Grossing chart (googleplay.chart_rank). Best rank is #17 in Spain (11-02, 11-03). Since 11-02 it has also charted in the US, ranking #41–#49. It has also been on the Hong Kong (#21–#43) and Nigeria (#22–#67) charts, plus Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, the UAE, South Africa, Turkey and South Korea. On ShortDramaData's global paid short-drama app chart 11-06, it ranks #45 (shortdramadata.com/en/apps/paid/dramaly).
2. Competitors
Short drama apps are one of the most crowded niches of 2023–2026, roughly falling into three tiers:
| Tier | Examples | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How Dramaly differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top original-content platforms | ReelShort (NewLeaf / China Literature) | 307M installs, up 5.51M in 7 days, #10 Top Grossing in Vietnam | Produces its own shows, owns the rights, brand advertising |
| DramaBox (StoryMatrix / Dianzhong) | 307M installs, 184 ratings per 10,000 installs | Same as above | |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Skywork / Kunlun) | 246M installs | Free to watch, monetized through ads, massive Google and Meta spending | |
| NetShort, ShortMax, GoodShort, Melolo, PineDrama (TikTok) | 0.8–160M installs | Big tech or Chinese companies going global, with their own catalogs | |
| Mid-tier | FreeDrama (Kuku), BlinkDrama, StoryReel, VibeShort | 10M–43M | Legitimate company entities, have charted in Top Grossing |
| Shells / white-label (same tier as Dramaly) | Halo Reels Pro / Max (8.2M / 5.7M), ShortFly Pro, NiceTV, Drama World Pro, AuraReel, LumaReel, DramaGo, ReelSaga, FlickReel, SwoonReel, EmberDrama, VibeFlix…… | Each 100k–8M | Same setup as Dramaly: gmail address with a Vietnamese name, free web hosting, developer name borrowed from a Vietnamese company (CENTRAL PHARMACEUTICAL CPC1 JSC, HAIPHONG CONSTRUCTION DESIGN, and similar), listed 40–80 days |
Among entertainment short drama apps in our library listed less than 90 days, any with a gmail developer address or a website on netlify / web.app / blogspot made it into the bottom tier of this table: 160 apps in total, 64.6M installs combined, and 13.1M gained over the last 7 days (googleplay library, 11-06). Dramaly is neither the source of this group nor its largest member.
3. Growth tactics
- Meta ads (confirmed): IndieTower found two Pages in Meta's ad library running ads for it, "Dramaly Film" and "Dramaly Short" (page_id 1375845912267752), totaling 17 ads and 16 creative sets. As of 11-04, 11 were still running, with the earliest starting 10-29. The copy is "Watch more great episodes on Dramaly now!", targeting Worldwide, placements on Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, and Threads, with only about 1.2K EU reach. So the spend is mostly outside the EU. Installs jumped twice, 10-31 and 11-03 (+100k and +136k, each over a few days combined), which lines up with when the ads started. Our metaads library doesn't track this app because it isn't on our watchlist. Among the same batch of shell apps, AuraReel, LumaReel, and EmberDrama each have 32–42 running ads in the metaads library, and FreeReels runs ads through a dozen or so gibberish-named Pages. Clearly this is the standard playbook in this circle.
- Multi-country entertainment chart spread (confirmed): Charting in 18 countries' category charts at once, but never in the overall chart. This is the typical pattern of using ad volume to hold category chart positions across countries, plus picking up some organic store traffic. It targets countries with low category chart barriers like Hong Kong, Nigeria, Spain, Italy, and the UAE.
- Riding category buzz and store search (inferred): The name Dramaly and the description are full of search terms like "short drama / CEO romance / revenge", and the store's "similar apps" section puts it alongside HoneyReels, JoyReels, and StardustTV. It has search traffic, but there's no data on how much.
- Channels not found: Searching "Dramaly" on TikTok returned nothing (TikHub). Nobody mentions it on X (x-radar). No media coverage. The only results online are auto-generated pages from APK sites and app data sites. Our googleads library doesn't have it either, but that library only tracks apps on our watchlist, so not finding it there doesn't mean it isn't advertising.
Where the money comes from: IAP in coins or memberships, up to $79.99 per item, plus ads. It has never charted in the Top Grossing of any country, and ShortDramaData ranks it #45 among paid short drama apps. Following how shell apps like this usually work, viewers likely watch the first few episodes free, then either watch rewarded ads or buy coins to unlock the rest, and that revenue gets reinvested in paid acquisition. What the ROI is can't be seen.
4. Retention and word of mouth
- It only has 4.2 ratings per 10K installs. The real platform ReelShort has 64.5, DramaBox 184, FreeReels 83. The same batch of Vietnamese shell apps sits at the same level: AuraReel 3.8, LumaReel 4.2, DramaGo 3.5 (googleplay library, 11-06). This suggests its installs are mostly bought, users watch and leave without reviewing, same as those shell apps.
- Ratings are polarized: 1-star 201, 5-star 214, and 2–4-star combined 54, averaging 3.09. The review with the most "helpful" votes on the store page says it gets stuck at the language selection step (91 people marked it helpful). Others say they don't know whether there are ads, and one treats it as a novel app. Users haven't shown any clear liking for the catalog or the experience.
- Whether the content is original, licensed, or reposted is unverified. Shell apps like this usually source content by batch-licensing from small platforms, or simply use other companies' shows.
5. Differentiation
No product differentiation can be found. The genres, vertical playback, coin and ad monetization are identical to ReelShort and DramaBox, and the experience is weaker (3.1 stars, stuck at language selection). It took off because three things stacked together: short drama is globally hot, Play's category charts have low barriers in small countries, and Vietnamese white-label teams have a mature pipeline of "borrow a company entity, make template apps, run global Meta ads, push multiple country category charts". The product itself isn't the reason.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. Revenue is not public, and there's no media or X discussion. Only APK sites, IndieTower, AppDashboard, and ShortDramaData auto-generated data pages.
- Copycats: Calling it copied isn't quite accurate, since it is itself part of an already large pipeline. Other apps using the same playbook in the same period include Halo Reels Pro / Max, ShortFly Pro / Max, NiceTV / NiceTV Max, Drama World Pro / Max, AuraReel, LumaReel, DramaGo, ReelSaga, FlickReel, SwoonReel, FrostBinge, EmberDrama, VibeFlix, DriftReel, PlayReel, Duvela, and about 160 more. Many are the same developer shipping both Pro and Max versions.
7. What to borrow
- Google Play category charts have low bars in small countries. One template app plus global Meta ads got installs to 1M in 3 weeks and charted in 18 countries at once. But big install numbers don't mean the product is good, keeps users, or makes money.
- How to spot this kind of app: very few ratings per 10K installs (< 10), a gmail developer address, a site on web.app / netlify / blogspot, a developer name that doesn't match the industry, and a Pro / Max double package. Use these traits in future screening to filter them out or group them separately.
- If you want to build a short-drama product, the barriers are the content library and rights, paid-acquisition ROI, and the ad buying team, not the app itself.
8. Still unclear
- 5–October: which stores and names this package has charted under (APKPure version history shows 1.0.3 already in May).
- Whether the content is licensed, self-produced, or reposted, and the risk of takedowns for infringement (common with shell apps).
- Actual revenue and paid-acquisition ROI; ad reach outside the EU (Meta's ad library only publicly shows reach data for the EU and UK).
- Whether Pol Teams and other Vietnamese shell-app teams are the same operator. Not verified.
