# "No coins, no VIP": a free short-drama app from a Kenyan account hit #1 on France's entertainment chart in a week

**What it is** An Android vertical short-drama app that sells no coins and no VIP, with only light ads. The shows appear to be taken from paid platforms and dubbed in Turkish with AI voices.

**Why it took off** Turkish users are fed up with paywalls like ReelShort and DramaWave. It hooked them with "completely free, zero ads on day one," and word of mouth spread in Turkey. The #1 ranking in France looks more like paid acquisition.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build a short-drama app. Take the tactics: turn the paywall that users hate most at big platforms into the selling point, trade zero ads in the first days for good reviews, and use AI dubbing to make licensed content available in smaller languages. Apply this in categories where licensed content is accessible, like audiobooks or children's animation.

Grade C: it runs because of pirated libraries, rented accounts, and near-zero costs. Followers either take on the same takedown risk or can't get cheap content. Big players like FreeReels and PineDrama already use licensed content for the same "free" pitch, and free-app slots are crowded. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-29 · 11-07 installs 131,601

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

NovaDrama is a vertical short-drama app with a simple pitch: shows that rivals lock behind coins or VIP play here for free, and on day one there are no ads at all. From Oct 29 to Nov 6, its Google Play installs went from 27K to 132K. Through word of mouth in Turkey it reached #2 on the free entertainment chart, and in France it reached #1. Below: what it sells, where the users come from, where the money comes from, who it competes with, and why you probably shouldn't copy it.

### A three-star review

Oct 31, a Turkish user gave NovaDrama three stars on Google Play: "I downloaded it because it said completely free, no ads. The first two shows really had no ads, then the ads started. The shows are decent, though. I can put up with the ads and keep watching. If I get annoyed one day, I'll delete it."

A week earlier, on Oct 24, another review praised it to the skies: "I'm not an AI, and I didn't design the website. This app has never shown a single ad from start to finish. Lots of shows have Turkish dubbing. Every other video site is garbage next to it. You'll regret not downloading it. 5 stars is too few."

These two reviews pretty much sum up the app. The hook is "free, no ads." Users came for that, and for the first few days it held. Then ads were gradually added. By Nov 6, the 200-plus recent reviews visible on Play were almost all in Turkish, most were 5 stars, and the most frequent words were reklamsız (no ads), ücretsiz (free), and jeton yok (no coins).

### What it is

An ordinary vertical short-drama app: CEO romance, revenge, wealthy family dramas, sweet romance. Episodes run one or two minutes, you can follow updates and bookmark shows. The store description reads no differently from dozens of similar apps. On Play it's listed as "NovaDrama: MiniSeries & Reels," the developer is WanCom Engineering Solution, the address is in Kenya, it was published Sep 29, and the first version was 1.8.4.

The only real difference is the business model. The Android version has no in-app purchases at all, just ads. One review says "I couldn't even buy VIP if I wanted to." The ads are also restrained:

- "No ads at all on the first day, they started a few days later, but not as many as other apps." (10-26)

- "Other apps have 1 to 3 ads per minute. If you're fed up, come here." (10-26)

- "Watch one ad to unlock five episodes. Unlike other apps, it isn't a money trap." (11-04)

- "Ads are at most 5 seconds and rarely show up." (11-05)

Where do the shows come from? One review from Oct 30 says it plainly: "Videos from paid platforms are free here." It doesn't produce its own shows. The library appears to be taken from paid short-drama platforms, with AI-generated Turkish dubbing (inference, no public evidence of licensing). Negative reviews focus on this too: "The Turkish dubbing is awful, you can tell it's AI translation, and it kills the mood." (11-02)

### Why it caught on in Turkey

Platforms like ReelShort and DramaBox let you watch the first episodes free, then unlock each one with coins, or buy weekly or monthly passes. DramaWave works by watching ads to earn coins. Turkish users don't earn much and are increasingly resentful of this setup. In NovaDrama's reviews, users name it directly: "The DramaWave ones are all scams. This app has no ads, and you don't have to watch ads to unlock anything." (10-24) "I got sick of watching ads to earn points. No such hassle here." (10-27)

Turks also love dramas dubbed in Turkish, and there's already a crowd of short-drama websites online with "TR Dublaj, free" in their names. NovaDrama combined both in one app: free, and in Turkish.

Here's how the volume grew (Google Play installs and charts, 10-29 to 11-06):

| Date | Total installs | Turkey entertainment free chart | France entertainment free chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 27k | #14 | #167 |
| 11-01 | 45k | #4 (10-31) | #17 |
| 11-02 | 94k | — | — |
| 11-03 | 117k | — | #4 |
| 11-06 | 132k | #2 (#1 was FreeReels) | #1 |

Added nearly 50K in a single day on Nov 2. On Turkey's overall app chart it climbed from #111 to #13.

### Where the traffic comes from

**Turkey: word of mouth, strong evidence.** The reviews start Oct 20, all in Turkish, many actively recruiting: "Download it, you won't regret it," "Recommend it to everyone." A Google Play link with `utm_term=novadrama reklamsız` turns up in search, which shows Turks really are searching Google for "novadrama no ads". But that link points to a different app with the same name, so people are even piggybacking on the name (Google search results, 11-06).

**How much of the praise is genuine: hard to say.** The line "I'm not an AI, and I didn't design it" reads like a prompt. Several reviews also complain about ads ("too many ads, please cut some down") yet give 5 stars. Most reviews are short and conversational, though, and read like real users.

**France: probably paid acquisition (inference).** In one week it climbed from #167 to #1 on France's entertainment chart, passing NetShort, ReelShort, FreeReels, and Netflix. But no French reviews surface, and no organic French content shows up on TikTok. The bar for France's free entertainment chart isn't high; tens of thousands of new installs a day is enough to top it. Google or Meta ads are the most likely explanation. No ads turned up in the ad library, but campaigns like this often fall outside what's searchable.

**The name borrows from the iOS app.** "Nova Drama" has a same-named iOS app launched Apr 10, from a Turkish individual developer account, Ihsan Ozturkmen, with 10,074 ratings in the US store at 4.9 stars (App Store, 11-06). It reached the top five on the Philippines entertainment chart. The Android site novadramab.top and the iOS site novadrama.top run on the same template with identical content. On TikTok, a batch of accounts such as novadrama_ca and novadrama_us posts AI short-drama clips, one with 6.4M views. A Philippine creator's video says "Nova Drama on iPhone, Rush Drama on Android" (TikTok, 11-06). The Android version most likely rides the search traffic for this name (inference).

### Who's behind it

Other apps under the same Android developer account use the package names `com.mrfix.io.spares.*` and `com.bodabora.*`. They were originally a Kenyan parts shop and a motorcycle delivery app, now renamed as games like Mole Mayhem and Cosmic Drift. That's a classic bought or rented aged account. The official site's privacy policy sits at `/xieyi/policy.html` (xieyi is the pinyin for "agreement"). Image captions read "Episode 1... Episode 10...", and the iOS bundle ID contains "chuang". It's fairly safe to conclude that a Chinese overseas-expansion team is publishing Android through a Kenyan account and iOS through a Turkish account (inference, high confidence).

### Where the money comes from

The Android version relies only on ads: interstitials and rewarded videos, "watch one ad to unlock five episodes." The privacy policy includes "reading the installed app list for ads." Ad rates in Turkey and France are modest, but costs are absurdly low: the shows are taken, the dubbing is AI, the account is rented, and the code is mature code with a new package name. As long as ad revenue slightly exceeds acquisition cost, it runs. The iOS version also sells a VIP subscription, and reviews call it "cheap." How much it actually earns isn't visible from outside.

### Who it's competing with

This lane is already crowded, and big players are already doing "free":

| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How NovaDrama differs |
|---|---|---|
| FreeReels(Skywork) | 246M installs, +3.64M in 7 days, #1 on Turkey's entertainment chart | Licensed libraries with the same "free + ads" pitch |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | 84M, +3.01M in 7 days | TikTok's own free short dramas, with platform traffic |
| Melolo (ByteDance) | 147M | Free + ads, focused on Southeast Asia |
| ReelShort / DramaBox | 307M each | Coins + subscription, exactly what users complain about |
| DramaWave / NetShort | 152M / 162M | Paid or unlocked by watching ads |
| Short TV (individual account) | 6.66M, #10 on Turkey's entertainment chart | The same individual-account shell packages, also running in Turkey |
| Halo Reels / Pro / Max | Three packages combined: about 26M | Same playbook, three packages launched together across Brazil and the Philippines |
| Drama World / Pro | 3.93M / 730k | Same white-label model, hitting the Philippines |

NovaDrama is three orders of magnitude smaller than FreeReels. Its only edge is "fewer ads, at least in the first few days," and that is already changing: on Oct 28 someone wrote "no ads at first, now constant ads," and on Oct 31 someone wrote "don't download it, the first one or two episodes have no ads, but every episode after has them."

### If it were you

**Verdict: C.** You can learn a few things from it, but copying it isn't worth it. The core of this business is a pirated library plus rented accounts. It works because the cost is close to zero, not because the product is good. Big players like FreeReels and the licensed PineDrama are pushing the same selling point, and white-label clones are already charting across several small countries.

**Who it's for:** teams already building global-market tools or content apps, with licensed short-drama catalogs (or access to cheap licenses for smaller-language markets), who can run Google UAC, and who want to use AI dubbing in a smaller-language market that big players haven't seriously worked.

**Who it's not for:** indie devs without a catalog, since the library is the whole business and you can't afford to shoot your own. Scraped content gets pulled and accounts get banned. Anyone hoping to make money from subscriptions, since these users come because it's free. And anyone who can code but can't run paid acquisition, since its volume in France looks bought.

**How to do it:** Don't build a short-drama app. Take three ideas from it that work on their own: ① Turn the things users hate most about big platforms (coins, paywalls) into the headline selling point on the first screen. ② Give new users zero ads on day one to collect good reviews, then add them gradually, but calculate where ads start triggering bad reviews (it started getting complaints on day 3 and 4). ③ Use AI dubbing to make existing content available in a smaller language, choosing a country with many users, low prices, and strong demand for dubbing, like Turkey. These three moves are safer in categories where you can license legitimate content, such as audiobooks, kids' animation, and comics, than in short dramas.

**How to get users:** First, prove it in one small country through store search and word of mouth. Write the store page and title in the local language, e.g. "free, no ads" (in Turkey: reklamsız, ücretsiz). Use free trials in the first few days to trade for reviews. Once word of mouth builds, push a small Google UAC budget toward adjacent entertainment charts, where a few thousand to tens of thousands of daily new installs can get you into the top ranks.

**When to move:** The window in Turkey is short. FreeReels is already #1 on the Turkish entertainment chart, and NovaDrama is adding ads. If you want to find the next country like this, pick it and launch before the first quarter of 2027.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① NovaDrama is still in the top ten of the French and Turkish entertainment charts a month from now, and its Android account hasn't been banned. That would mean scraping plus rented accounts is more durable than it looks. ② It adds in-app purchases or subscriptions on Google Play and charts on Top Grossing. That would mean free users are converting to paying users, and the model is worth more than pure ads. ③ The reverse: it falls off the charts or disappears from the store within a week or two. That's the normal lifespan of this kind of play, so don't follow it.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **Turkish reviews + store and Google search** : all 215 recent reviews are in Turkish, the earliest dated 10-20, many actively recommending "download it, you won't regret it." Google search results include a Play link with utm_term=novadrama reklamsız

- Inferred **Paid acquisition to push the France chart** : the French entertainment chart went from #167 to #1 in 7 days, but there are no French reviews and no French organic content. Meta and TikTok ad libraries don't show it (the libraries only track products on their watchlist)

- Inferred **Prompting or buying reviews** : reviews like "I'm not an AI, nor the designer... 5 stars is too few"; several posts complain about ads yet give 5 stars

- Inferred **Riding on the iOS Nova Drama version and the name's reputation on TikTok** : iOS Nova Drama has 10k ratings in the US store, and its website template matches the Android sites novadrama.top / novadramab.top exactly. There are many "Nova Drama free to watch" posts on TikTok

- **Confirmed** **Listing under a rented long-time developer account** : other apps under the WanCom account (Kenya, Edward Omondi) use package names com.mrfix.io.* and com.bodabora.*, now disguised with game-style names. The iOS Ozturkmen surname also has several unrelated accounts

### One line

It's a vertical short-drama app that runs on "free + few ads." It offers shows rivals charge for or unlock with coins, adds AI-dubbed multilingual versions, and monetizes only through ads. The Android version is listed under a Kenyan individual developer account. The same operator's iOS version, "Nova Drama" 2026-04, is live under a Turkish person's account. Users come because it's "free, no coins, barely any ads," and word of mouth spread in Turkey. The French chart push is probably paid acquisition, but there's no evidence yet.

### 1. Core numbers and growth

- **Android** : store launch date 2026-09-29 (the listing date may have been reset; the version number is 1.8.4, which doesn't look like a newly written app but like mature code repackaged under a new package name). Global cumulative installs 131,601, +104,831 over the last 7 days (googleplay library app_profile). Historical data from AppstoreSpy shows 10-24 cumulative 11.5k, 10-27 26.8k, 11-02 single-day +49.6k, 11-03 +22.2k, 11-06 132k (app_day_ext).

- **Charts** (chart_rank):
    - Turkey: entertainment free chart 10-29 #14 → 10-31 #4 → 11-06 #2 (#1 is FreeReels); overall app chart 111 → 13.
    - France: entertainment free chart 10-29 #167 → 11-01 #17 → 11-03 #4 → 11-05/06 #1, passing NetShort, ReelShort, FreeReels, and Netflix. Best overall app chart rank #28.
    - Canada: entertainment chart 73–171.

- **Monetization** : "contains ads," no in-app purchases (app_snap: offers_iap=False, ad_supported=True). A Turkish review says "I wanted to buy VIP but couldn't."

- **Ratings** : the Play page shows 5.0 / 22 reviews on tablets. The library collected 215 recent reviews, all from Turkey, most giving 5 stars.

- **iOS sister app Nova Drama** (id6761963411, developer Ihsan Ozturkmen, bundle id `app.tools.moviechuang`): launched 2026-04-10, 10,066 ratings in the US store, 4.9 stars. In the Philippines, +371 ratings in the last 7 days, entertainment chart #12, overall chart #61 (appstore library). Appfigures recorded it hitting #20 on the Philippines iPhone overall chart and #4 on the entertainment chart. mwm.ai estimates 750k+ downloads. The iOS version has VIP subscriptions.

### 2. Who's behind it: operator traces

- The Android developer is WanCom Engineering Solution, contact Edward Omondi, address in Kenya, email tokea.org@gmail.com. Other apps under this account use package names `com.mrfix.io.spares.*` and `com.bodabora.*` (a Kenyan parts shop and boda motorbike delivery), but now appear under disguised names like Mole Mayhem, Cosmic Drift, Aether Bounce, and Explore China. This is a typical **bought or rented long-time developer account** , used to publish white-label apps and transfer them.

- The website novadramab.top and the iOS app's site novadrama.top use **the same template, with identical page content** (both Brazilian Portuguese short-drama descriptions). The privacy policy sits at `/xieyi/policy.html` (xieyi is the pinyin for the Chinese word for "agreement"), image alt text reads "剧集1…剧集10", and the iOS bundle id contains "chuang." It's largely safe to conclude that a **Chinese going-global team** built it and listed it using a Turkish individual account (iOS) and a Kenyan account (Android) (inferred, unverified).

- The Ozturkmen surname also appears on the App Store for Zeynep Ozturkmen (DentHero) and Sefa Ozturkmen (Ballcade, Lista de Compras). These are unrelated small apps, which looks like a matrix of accounts.

### 3. Why users come and stay

Turkish reviews are almost entirely one-sided, all making the same point:

- "reklamsız" (no ads), "jeton yok, premium yok" (no coins, no premium), and "ücretsiz" (free) are the most common words. Examples: "Ads don't flood the screen, no coins, no premium, I watched every show for free" (2026-10-24). "All the DramaWave stuff is a scam, this app has no ads and you don't have to watch ads to unlock" (10-24). "Other apps have 1–3 ads per minute, if you're fed up, come here" (10-26).

- The pattern is clear: **no ads at all on day one, then short ads of about 5 seconds start showing up** . Several reviews confirm it: "No ads the first day, they start a few days later, but not as many as elsewhere" (10-26, 10-27). "No ads on the first two shows, then they started" (10-31). "Watch 1 ads to unlock 5 episodes" (11-04).

- **The content comes from paid platforms elsewhere** : one review says "Videos that are paid on other platforms are free here" (10-30). An iOS review also says "Shows from other paid apps are free here, so I came here first" (quoted via mwm.ai). The library may be scraped without authorization (unverified).

- **The Turkish dubbing is AI-generated** , and the negative reviews focus on this: "The Turkish dub is terrible, it's obviously AI translation" (11-02). Other complaints include lag, low video quality, and fewer episodes than the original platforms.

- Bottom line: users' pain with paying for short dramas (ReelShort and DramaBox at around $20 a week, or watching ads to earn coins) gave it an opening. Turkish users have low purchasing power and are very sensitive to "free," and they like shows with Turkish dubbing (search results show sites like Shortizle and LiderDrama advertising "TR Dublaj free"), so word of mouth spreads fast.

### 4. Competitors

The vertical short-drama category is already crowded. In the googleplay library alone, dozens of apps with drama or short in their names are rising:

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 2026-11-06) | How NovaDrama differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | Android/iOS | 2022-08 | 307M installs, +5.51M in 7 days, best Top Grossing rank #10 | Original series + coins / subscriptions, expensive |
| DramaBox | Android/iOS | 2023-04 | 307M, +2.92M in 7 days, Turkey entertainment chart #3 | Mainly paid unlocks |
| FreeReels(Skywork) | Android/iOS | 2024-11 | 246M, +3.64M in 7 days, Turkey entertainment chart #1 | Big-platform "free + ads" version with licensed catalog, pushing the same selling point |
| DramaWave(Skywork) | Android/iOS | 2024-09 | 152M, +2.89M in 7 days | Paid + watch-ads to unlock. Turkish reviews compare it against this |
| NetShort | Android/iOS | 2024-07 | 162M, +2.66M in 7 days, France entertainment chart #2 | Mainly paid |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | Android/iOS | 2025-12 | 84M, +3.01M in 7 days | TikTok's official free short dramas, with platform traffic |
| Melolo (ByteDance) | Android/iOS | 2024-11 | 147M | Free + ads, focused on Southeast Asia |
| FreeDrama(Kuku) | Android | 2026-04 | 42.6M | Free model |
| Short TV: Movie Series(Tuan Genilai) | Android | 2026-05 | 6.66M, #10 on Turkey's entertainment chart | Same play: free short drama from personal accounts, running in Turkey |
| Halo Reels / Pro / Max(Nutri Plaza) | Android | 2026-07/08 | 12.3M + 8.2M + 5.68M | Same playbook, three packages launched at once |
| Drama World / Pro(Skylark Scan) | Android | 2026-07/09 | 3.93M / 730k | Same white-label model, hitting the Philippines |
| Nova Drama (iOS, same operator) | iOS | 2026-04 | US store 10k rating, #12 in the Philippines Entertainment chart | It's the iOS version, just with a subscription added |
| Shortizle / LiderDrama etc. | Web | — | Not verified | Turkish-dubbed short drama site, free |

NovaDrama itself isn't new. What sets it apart from the big players is three things: **fewer ads (at least in the first few days), no coins or memberships, and a catalog that looks like it was lifted from a paid platform** . In scale, it trails FreeReels by three orders of magnitude.

### 5. Growth tactics

- **Turkish word of mouth + store search (strong evidence)** : reviews go back to 10-20, all in Turkish; many reviews actively recommend it ("you won't regret downloading it", "recommend it to everyone"). One Google search result carries a Play link with the referrer `utm_term=novadrama reklamsız`, which means real Turks were searching Google for "novadrama no ads".

- **Likely incentivized or fake positive reviews (suspected)** : one review reads "I'm not an AI, nor the site's designer… you'll regret not downloading it, 5 stars is too few" (10-24), and several reviews that complain ("too many ads", "please remove the ads") still gave 5 stars. Reviews cluster around 05:00–08:00 Beijing time (midnight to 3 a.m. in Turkey), which could also just be real late-night users. Whether reviews were faked cannot be confirmed.

- **France chart push (inferred to be paid acquisition, unverified)** : in the France Entertainment chart it climbed from #167 to #1 over 7 days, yet the database has not picked up a single French-language review (reviews were only pulled from the best-ranking store), and TikTok shows no organic French content. With 5k–50k new global installs a day, topping the France Entertainment chart is plausible through Google UAC or Meta ads.

- **Ad libraries** : neither metaads nor tiktokads turned up NovaDrama, novadrama, or dramamini (both libraries track only a set list of products, and TikTok's only covers ads served in Europe; not finding them doesn't mean they weren't run).

- **TikTok / X** : a TikHub search for "novadrama" returns other companies' Nova Drama accounts (novadrama_ca_*, promoting "Nova Drama / Rush Drama" AI shows) and referral accounts for ReelShort and GoodShort. No organic creator content for this app itself was found. x-radar shows 0 posts in the last 30 days.

- **Name piggybacking** : "Nova Drama" is already a name many people use. The iOS version itself carries it, with traction in the US and the Philippines. On Android, same-name or near-name apps include THSolution's Nova Drama (com.movie.tvshow.vionixkly, 37k installs), CreativeSmart Living's NovaDrama (50k), and novadrama.org (a Romanian-language free short drama site). The Android version very likely borrows the fame of the iOS version's "Nova Drama free watch" TikTok push (inferred).

### 6. Where the money comes from

The Android version has no in-app purchases and runs entirely on ads (interstitial / rewarded video; the ad network is unverified, though the privacy policy mentions "reading the installed app list for ads"). Ad CPMs in Turkey and France aren't high, but the catalog is borrowed, so content cost is near zero, accounts are rented, and AI dubbing is cheap. As long as ad revenue exceeds acquisition cost, it works. The iOS version relies on subscriptions (reviews mention "cheap price").

### 7. Visibility

- No public revenue figures, no media coverage, no discussion on X; only auto-generated app pages from sites like mwm.ai and AppBrain, plus Appfigures chart data.

- But the model is already crowded: FreeReels, PineDrama, and Melolo, big players running licensed "free short drama", plus Halo Reels, Drama World, Short TV, and DramaOL, personal-account white-label packages pushing charts in small countries.

### 8. Verdict

- **Why it took off** : paid short drama platforms are priced too high (weekly $20, coin unlocks), which breeds resentment, so it made "completely free, zero ads for the first few days" its hook. The catalog is suspected to be lifted from paid platforms, and with AI-dubbed Turkish audio it grew in Turkey through word of mouth and search. The #1 France ranking looks bought. Underneath is a playbook from Chinese going-global teams: rent accounts (Kenya / Turkey), launch the same brand on iOS and Android at once, monetize through ads.

- **Differentiation** : on the product side, it only has "truly free, fewer ads" and multilingual AI dubbing. Users come for exactly that, and almost all reviews talk about it, so it is a real reason it took off. But the edge is hard to hold: ads are increasing and negative reviews followed; the catalog carries copyright risk; the Android accounts are borrowed and could be pulled at any time.

### 9. Uncertain

- Whether the France and Canada numbers were bought, and through which channels;

- Whether the catalog is unlicensed piracy;

- Whether the Android and iOS Nova Drama are run by the same team (the two websites are identical, so the odds are high);

- How many positive reviews are incentivized or fake;

- Retention: reviews already complain "ads start appearing on day three," and whether it can keep users once ads increase.
