The drama in the ad can't be found in the app: a Pakistani individual developer's short-drama shell, 500k installs in two months
What it is A 1-minute vertical short-drama app built by a Pakistani individual developer, with ads and coin-based in-app purchases, and no original shows.
Why it took off It buys Facebook ads every day, with creatives cut from 3-minute clips of other apps' hit dramas. When an old package gets taken down, it swaps in a new one and keeps spending. It sits in the Video Players category, and ten thousand installs a day is enough to chart across multiple countries.
CHow you could follow Don't build another shell. If you want into short dramas, do what the shells haven't done: legal catalogs, deep focus on one language, and copy its tactics of niche categories and long creatives.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-30 · 11-07 installs 504,968
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.Android · Ratings count (cumulative) Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)
DramaVibe isn't a better short-drama app. It's a more effective paid-acquisition playbook. A 3-minute clip of a popular drama ran on Facebook for 80 days, pulling people into a "drama shell" with no catalog of its own. The shell was then listed in the Video Players category, which has much less competition, and ten thousand installs a day put it on the category charts in 26 countries. It works, but anyone following it will find more than twenty of the same shells already out there.
A 104-person-upvoted one-star review
In Sep 2026 10, a user named aminah macumbal left a review of DramaVibe on Google Play:
the short that they posting are not in this apps DramaVibe, they just want you to install it……trying hard to scroll in that's apps to find the short that you wanna watch but there's no way to find out it
"The drama in the ad isn't in the app at all, they just want you to install it." By Nov 6, the review had 104 "helpful" votes, the most-liked review on the app. The developer replied the next day, asking her to email a gmail address.
Three weeks later, another US user, Cindy Hellsten, was more specific: she installed it after seeing an ad about "a man who wants to adopt a baby." She searched for ages and couldn't find that drama, but found a pile of adult content she "didn't want to think about," and uninstalled.
These two reviews make clear what DramaVibe is: users are drawn in by other companies' dramas.
What it is and who made it
DramaVibe - Dramas & Reels (Google Play, package com.dramavibe.stream). The store page describes "vertical short dramas of about 1 minutes per episode." It's ad-supported with in-app purchases, priced at $1.99 to $249.99 per unit, a classic coin-unlock episode model. The store listing's first release was 2026-08-30,10-26, and it has not been updated since.
The developer is Level Prestige, with a website on blogspot. Replies to reviews come from two gmail addresses (one containing zarkoontechnology, one containing zubairzarkoonisb), which matches the Islamabad, Pakistan individual developer Zubair Farooq (inferred, fairly confident). There is no company, no original content, no media coverage, and no one has mentioned it on X in the past 30 days.
How fast it grew
| Date | Total installs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 09-02 | About 2,400 | Third-party estimate (AppstoreSpy) |
| 09-16 | About 44k | Same as above |
| 10-01 | About 109k | Same as above |
| 10-13 | About 267k | Same as above |
| 10-27 | About 400k | Same as above |
| 11-05 | 505k | Google Play installs |
105k new installs in the last 7 days (Google Play, 11-06). The curve is flat: from mid-September each day ran 8 thousand to 16k, with no sudden spike and no drop-off. That doesn't look like word of mouth. It looks like someone paying for installs every day.
Another signal is the ratings: 500k installs but only 908 ratings, about 0.18%, while organically grown content apps usually sit far higher. The ratings are polarized: 5 one-star and 515 five-star reviews... 1 five-star, 231 one-star; the average slid from 10-29 to 3.79 11-06 and landed at 3.66.
11-06 It is on the free chart for Video Players & Editors: #3 in South Korea, #10 in the US, #13 in Japan and Turkey, charting in 26 countries in total. It isn't on any top-grossing chart.
Where users come from: a 3-minute ad
It ranks first on BigSpy's short-drama ad chart (updated 11-02). The advertiser is "DramaVibe - Short Drama Hub / Level Prestige", with the copy "The home of viral dramas." The video runs 3 min 1 sec, ran from 08-14 to 11-01, for 80 consecutive days, with estimated impressions of 313M. On the same page, the top creatives from DramaBox and GoodShort run 40 seconds and get around two million estimated impressions. The impression figures come from monitoring tools and the magnitude is unverified, but the fact that a long creative kept running for several months suggests the math works for it.
The ad's thumbnail shows a blonde girl sitting among a group of people, laughing, with the subtitle "problem, not ours." A red R logo sits in the upper right, and a faint "ReelShort" watermark is in the background. In other words, the creative was likely cut directly from ReelShort's show (inferred from the ad thumbnail). This also explains the most-liked negative review: the drama in the ad belongs to ReelShort, so it's obviously not in DramaVibe.
3 minutes is much longer than typical peers. It's long enough to tell the full hook of a storyline, then get people to "go to the app for the ending."
Two not-very-proud but effective moves
Package swapping. The same developer had an earlier app with the same name and description, "DramaVibe - Dramas & Reels" (com.dramareels.drama.streaming), which reached about 480k installs, stopped updating after Jul 25, and has now been removed from the store. Two or three other packages in the same series were also taken down. The current new package launched on Aug 30, reusing the same ad creatives and brand name. Whether the old package was removed for violations or pulled voluntarily is unverified.
Picking the category. It isn't listed under Entertainment but under Video Players & Editors. Competitors in that category are CapCut, VLC and screen-casting tools, so ten thousand installs a day can land it in the top ten across several countries. The same volume in Entertainment would be fighting ReelShort and DramaBox, where the top 100 is nearly impossible. Charting also brings a bit of organic traffic from the store. The Korean store listing's title was fully localized into Korean (드라마바이브: 숏폼 드라마 & 세로형 릴스), and Korea is its highest-ranking market, so the ad spend was targeted by country.
Where the money comes from
The store lists "contains ads + in-app purchases." The app integrates Google and Facebook ad SDKs. Third-party estimates put it at about 150k MAU and "$10K+" monthly revenue, with 75% from in-app purchases (AppGoblin, estimated, unverified).
One number doesn't add up here: if the 300M impressions are real, the paid acquisition spend should be far more than $10,000 a month. Either the impressions are overstated or the revenue is understated. There's no way to tell from the outside.
There's also no good evidence on retention. The Korean reviews are short: "won't open" and "can't get in." The most-liked one (55 people) says "After installing it kept pushing me to download other things, so I gave up." That kind of "prompting another download" tactic was reported by VnExpress in October for a batch of short-drama apps in Vietnam. Whether DramaVibe itself does this is unverified.
Who it's competing with
Above it are big companies with real catalogs; below it are shells that look exactly like it.
| Product | Scale (Google Play) | How DramaVibe differs |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort, DramaBox | About 300M installs each | Original licensed dramas, a permanent spot on the top-grossing charts, and heavy paid acquisition |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Kunlun) | 250M / 150M | Free + ads versions from big players |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | 84M, +3M in 7 days | ByteDance entering directly |
| Reelora | 234k, +64k in 7 days | Similar shells launched at the end of September, also in Video Players |
| OlaDrama, Flixwatch, Drama Comet, AmorDrama and others | 10k to 500k | The same template, mostly from gmail developers in Pakistan and Morocco |
| "Earn money watching dramas" apps (CoinDrama etc.) | 100k to 18M | Use cash-out promises to push ad watching |
In the Video Players category, at least 20 new apps launched after May with "drama" in their descriptions. A Vietnamese company launched "DramaVibe: Mini Films" in mid-October, borrowing the name directly and running 28 ads on Facebook. DramaVibe is just the fastest-running one in this batch of shells.
If it were you
C: worth learning from, but not worth copying. It got where it is through three things: long clip creatives, niche categories, and switching packages when taken down. Each of these is already being done by more than twenty people, and the creatives are likely other companies' licensed dramas, so the risk falls entirely on you.
Who it suits: small teams that already make tools or content apps on Google Play, know how to run Meta ads, and want to learn the "category arbitrage" and "long creative" tricks for a category where they have legitimate content.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to run a short-drama app long term, anyone without licensed catalogs, and anyone who can't handle accounts getting banned or packages getting pulled. Without your own catalog, you're left running ads with other people's dramas, and that road won't last long with reviews and store review teams.
How to do it: if you really want into short dramas, the most worthwhile move isn't building another shell. It's filling the gap the shells left: legal catalogs (distribution deals with small and mid-sized short-drama rights holders, or AI-generated episodes), localization for one language (Korean, Turkish and similar markets that chart well), and making sure the drama in your ad is actually findable in your app. For distribution, copy the parts that work: pick less crowded categories and make creatives 2–3 minutes long that land the hook.
How to acquire users: Meta video ads. Test long creatives in one or two countries on a small budget, and if you're getting a few thousand installs a day, check whether the category chart ranking responds (inferred).
When this window closes: The category-arbitrage trick dies once Google Play moves short-drama apps into Entertainment or tightens category review. The more shells pile in, the faster the bar on this category chart rises. Worth testing, but test before the end of 2026.
Here's how to read it: ① DramaVibe charting Top Grossing in any country shows the shell can hold paying users, so this business is worth more than it looks; ② it was pulled before December and relaunched under a new package and kept buying, which shows the playbook can last, but also that this is a rebrand-and-repeat business; ③ the top 20 of the video player category was full of drama shells in early 2027, so that gap is already closed.

Why DramaVibe - Dramas & Reels (com.dramavibe.stream) is working
Channel: Google Play | Developer: Level Prestige (solo developer Zubair Farooq in Islamabad, Pakistan, with a Gmail address and a Blogspot site) | Store launch 2026-08-30 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This didn't grow from a great product. It runs on paid acquisition + repackaging + picking an under-the-radar category. A solo developer from Pakistan has run a 3-minute short-drama clip on Meta for a long time (BigSpy logs the same creative running from 11-01 to 2026-08-14 for 80 days, est. 313M impressions), pushing users into a "short-drama shell" app. The app sits in the low-competition Video Players & Editors category, so about 10k installs a day was enough to reach #3 on the South Korea category chart and #10 in the US. The previous package with the same name and description (com.dramareels.drama.streaming, about 480k installs) was pulled, and the current package is the replacement uploaded in Aug 30. There's almost no differentiation; the top-liked review says "the show in the ad isn't in the app."
1. Data (sources: googleplay library + AppstoreSpy backfill + third-party)
- Lifetime global installs 504,968 (2026-11-06, googleplay library app_snap), up 7 over the last 105,129 days.
- Install curve (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 09-02 about 2,356 → 09-16 about 44k → 10-01 about 109k → 10-13 about 267k → 10-27 about 400k → 11-05 about 505k. From mid-September on, it has held steady at roughly 8k–16k a day, with no spike and no decay. That's a sustained paid-acquisition curve, not the S-curve of organic growth.
- 908 ratings, a rating-to-install ratio of about 0.18% (organic content apps usually run much higher). The distribution is polarized: 5-star 515, 1-star 231 (11-06), and the average slid from 10-29 down to 3.66 via 3.79.
- Charts (googleplay library chart_rank, 11-06): Video Players Top Free: #3 in South Korea, #10 in the US, #13 in Japan, #13 in Turkey, charting in 26 countries total; it appears on no Top Grossing chart. The Korean store title is localized as 드라마바이브: 숏폼 드라마 & 세로형 릴스.
- Monetization: the store listing says "contains ads + in-app purchases," with in-app purchases of $1.99–$249.99 per item (coin/membership-style unlocks). AppGoblin detects Google and Facebook ad SDKs plus 1 mediation networks; estimated MAU about 149k and monthly revenue "$10K+" (75% IAP / 25% ads), estimate, unverified (https://appgoblin.info/apps/com.dramavibe.stream).
2. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing
Short-drama apps are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play in 2026. Similar apps from the googleplay library (11-06 data):
| Product | Channel | Launched | Scale | How DramaVibe differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort (NewLeaf / Maple Interactive) | Android/iOS | 2022-08 | 307M installs, 7 day +5.5M | Owned, licensed series, stays on the Top Grossing chart; DramaVibe has no owned content |
| DramaBox (STORYMATRIX / Dianzhong) | Android/iOS | 2023-04 | $307M, $7 daily + $2.92M | Same as above; top publisher with huge paid acquisition |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (SKYWORK AI / Kunlun) | Android/iOS | 2024-09/11 | 246M / 152M | The big-company free + ad model version |
| NetShort, Melolo, ShortMax, GoodShort, FlickReels | Android/iOS | 2023–2024 | 38M–160M | All Chinese publishers going global with licensed libraries, listed under Entertainment |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | Android | 2025-12 | $84M, $7 daily + $3M | Big players turning it into a feature; ByteDance entered directly |
| FreeDrama / Kuku TV(Kuku) | Android | 2026-04 / 2025-03 | 42.6M / 200M | Indian publisher, also spending heavily on Meta ads (same BigSpy page) |
| Reelora(xolbor) | Android | 2026-09-29 | 234k, 7 per day +64k | Short-drama shells from the same batch of Gmail solo developers, also in Video Players; smaller in scale |
| OlaDrama, Flixwatch, Drama Comet, SceneBreak, AmorDrama, Drama Sprout | Android | 2026-07 to 10 | 13k–530k | Same-template solo-developer shells (mostly Gmail developers from Pakistan and Morocco); DramaVibe is the fastest-growing of this group |
| CoinDrama, CashDrama, JoyClip, LuckyReels and other "watch and earn" apps | Android/iOS | 2025–2026 | 100k–17.9M | Relies on "watch to withdraw" to drive ad views; VnExpress 2026-10-19 reported on this type of scam ad or lure-to-download |
| DramaVibe(dramavibe.com,Cloud Sail Short Drama Media) | Web / iOS | 2026-07 | iOS rating 0 | Same name, different company, unrelated to this product |
Verdict: competition isn't the problem. The top players are big companies with content libraries. DramaVibe is one of the low-tier "shell" network, and the best performer in that group.
3. Growth levers: where users come from
- Meta family (Facebook/Instagram) long-form video ads: the main channel, with stronger evidence. The BigSpy short-drama ad chart (page updated 2026-11-02) ranks "DramaVibe - Short Drama Hub / Level Prestige / The home of viral dramas" first. It's a 3-1 min video, ran 2026-08-14 to 2026-11-01 and kept running for 80 days, with estimated impressions of 313M. On the same page, the top creatives for DramaBox, GoodShort and FreeDrama sit around 2M estimated impressions (https://bigspy.com/tools/short-drama-ad-spy-tool). Another search snippet shows the same developer's creative "Daily Quick Play Stories", 3 min 4 sec, running 2026-06-30 to 10-24. BigSpy's impressions are estimates and the scale is unverified, but a long creative running for months on end is itself a sign the ROI works.
- Our own metaads / googleads / tiktokads libraries did not track it (not being on the list doesn't mean it wasn't advertised).
- Bait creative: Top-liked store reviews (104 people found them helpful, 2026-09-10): "The show in the ad isn't in the app at all, they just want you to install"; another (2026-09-30): clicked the ad, couldn't find the show, got adult content instead. This shows the creative is clips from outside popular dramas with no matching content in the app, a classic case of buying traffic with borrowed hit-show clips.
- Repackaging to keep the traffic from old creative. AppGoblin shows the same developer also had "DramaVibe - Dramas & Reels" (com.dramareels.drama.streaming), same name and description, with about 482k installs, last updated 2026-07-25, now pulled. There's also "DramaVibe -Stream Short Series" (com.level.presetige, 272 installs, pulled), "Short Drama Series - DramaX" (about 10k), and "Short Drama Series - FreeDrama" (com.level.dramavibe). The privacy policy page 2026-07-09 names it "DramaVibe - Short Drama Hub." In short: the old package reached about 480k before it was pulled in July, a new package launched in Aug 30, and the same creative kept running. This is the small-account-network / switch packages when banned playbook (source: www.appgoblin.info/developers/Level+Prestige).
- Category arbitrage: Listed under Video Players & Editors rather than Entertainment. Competitors on that category chart are CapCut, VLC, media players and screen-casting tools. About 10k installs a day was enough for #3 in South Korea and #10 in the US. The same volume in Entertainment wouldn't get it into the top 100. Charting also brought in a bit of organic store traffic.
- Localized store page: The Korean title is fully translated, and the high rankings line up with its category charts in Korea, Japan, Turkey and elsewhere, which suggests country-level targeting of the spend.
- Creators / X / media: none. x-radar: 30 days, 0 posts mentioning "DramaVibe"; TikTok search turns up no official account or linked videos for it (vibedrama_* is a different company); no media coverage, no public revenue figures.
4. Why users stay / pay
- No evidence that users stay or pay: it's absent from every top-grossing chart; ratings are polarized and the average is falling; Korean reviews say "won't open" and "after I installed it kept asking me to download more stuff."
- How the money comes back (inferred): the short-drama category's existing payment habits (big players have trained users to pay to unlock after episode N), plus in-app coin unlocks at $1.99–$249.99, plus free users watching interstitial and rewarded ads (Google + Facebook ad SDKs). AppGoblin estimates $10K+ a month. If the 313M impressions are real, acquisition cost would far exceed that. So either BigSpy overstates impressions or revenue is understated. This is unverified.
- Reviews like "keeps making me download other stuff" resemble the "lures users into downloading other apps" pattern VnExpress described in 2026-10-19 coverage of short-drama money apps. Whether DramaVibe itself does this is unverified.
5. Differentiation
- On the product side, nothing stands out. The description is generic marketing copy, the library's content source is unknown, and reviewers say the shows in the ads can't be found.
- What's actually different is the distribution playbook: ① use 3-minute long clips as creatives (far longer than the 40–60 second clips rivals use), telling the story hook and then pushing "watch the ending in the app"; ② sit in low-competition categories to get chart exposure; ③ when pulled, swap the package, with the same name, description, and creatives relaunched. These are why it took off.
6. How many people have seen it
- Few people know about it yet. No public revenue, no mentions on X or in media; it only shows up in tools like BigSpy and AppGoblin.
- But the playbook is already everywhere. In the Video Players category, at least 20 new apps launched after 2026-05 with "drama" in their descriptions (googleplay library), mostly from gmail-based solo developers (Reelora, OlaDrama, Flixwatch, Drama Comet, AmorDrama, SceneBreak, Drama Sprout…). Vietnam's VINAINCON also has "DramaVibe: Mini Films" (launched 2026-10-13, 12k installs) borrowing the same name, and its Meta page DramaBinge is running 28 ads (metaads library, app_link).
7. Takeaways
- Low-competition category + small, steady paid acquisition = top ranks in multiple countries' category charts. That's the real way to exploit Google Play's low chart thresholds.
- Long clips (3 minutes) can run for a very long lifecycle in the short-drama category.
- The risks came along too: creatives that don't match the content draw bad reviews and removals (the old package was already pulled). Swapping packages buys time, but accumulated ratings and account risk keep rising.
8. Uncertain
- Where the content comes from (licensed, aggregated, or pirated) is unverified.
- The basis for BigSpy's 313M impressions, plus actual ad spend and ROI, are unverified.
- Why the old package com.dramareels.drama.streaming was pulled (policy violation or voluntary removal) is unverified.
- Revenue: only AppGoblin's "$10K+/month" estimate.
