After Amino shut down: a Brazilian built a Portuguese-speaking community with "Miss Amino?"
What it is A Portuguese Amino: interest-based communities with group chats, voice rooms, blogs and wikis, plus level check-ins and virtual cosmetics like avatar frames and chat bubbles.
Why it took off After Amino shut down, Portuguese users had nowhere to go. It opened pre-registration with "Miss Amino?", pinned the official Discord link to discord.gg/amino, and got the admins of original Amino communities to bring their whole groups over.
C How you could play it Don't build another Amino clone. Take the playbook for the next platform that shuts down: within a month of the shutdown announcement, launch a pre-registration page in the local language, borrow the original platform's name to capture traffic, recruit original community admins to bring members over, and copy the original's cosmetics and membership monetization.

Amino is an interest-community app that shut down in Dec 19 2025, with no announcement and no migration path for users. Crystopher Felisberto, an indie developer from Sorocaba in São Paulo state, Brazil, built a nearly identical app called Ducks. It launched on Google Play in mid-July and had 49.5k installs by November 6. From late October it sat every day in the 83–93 range of Brazil's Play social Top Grossing chart. Its features aren't better than the rest. Its edge is moving first: the Amino name, Amino's Discord link and the old Amino communities, it claimed them all early. Below: how it caught these users, where the money comes from, who is competing with it, and whether it's worth copying the approach in another language or for another shut-down platform.
Jul 1, a Vampire Diaries fan community moved house
On 2026 Jul 1, the TikTok account @thevampirediaries.ducks posted a video titled "Passo a passo de como baixar o aplicativo Ducks e entrar na TVD PT/BR" (step-by-step guide to downloading the Ducks app and joining the Portuguese-language TVD community): step one, tap this Play Store link; step two, sign up; step three, search for the community name. The account used to be a US-TV fan community on Amino. After Amino shut down, they renamed it on TikTok and swapped the "Amino" suffix for "ducks." On Aug 22 it posted again: "É OFICIAL!!! O APLICATIVO DUCKS SERÁ LANÇADO EM 23/08/2026!" (Official!!! The Ducks app launches on 23 Aug!)
These videos don't get many views, a few thousand or a few hundred, but they all do the same thing: the original community admins bring the whole group over. On TikTok you can also find BTS and Demon Slayer fan community accounts that renamed themselves the same way. One Aug 6 video says: "Ducks made a new Amino, a better version, with pets that have streak flames like the chat streaks."
What it is
Ducks is Amino's shape: interest-based communities with feeds, blogs, collaboratively edited wikis, group chats, voice rooms and live streams. Each user has levels, points, daily check-ins and achievements, and can buy avatar frames and chat bubbles. The store subtitle reads "O aplicativo de comunidades 100% brasileiro" (the 100% Brazilian community app). On Play it's rated 14+, and the user base skews toward teens.
Old users barely need to learn anything. One Aug 24 Play review says "App ótimo! bem familiar para mim" (Great app, very familiar to me). A Sep 10 review says "até um pouco melhor que o amino" (even a bit better than Amino), but then: "but there are too many bugs, lag and updates, and calls sometimes won't open."
Where users come from: claim Amino's name and entry points first
Search capture. Early on, its name in the stores and Facebook groups was "Ducks - Comunidades de Amino", and the APKPure page for the package still lives at amino-ducks-comunidades. In June it opened pre-registration on X, with the copy opening "Você sente falta do Amino?" (Do you miss Amino?). The official Discord invite in the Instagram pre-registration post was discord.gg/amino, so anyone looking for Amino on Discord found Ducks. Once established, the store name changed to the neutral "Ducks App - Communities & Chat", and Amino no longer appears in the description.
Pre-registration + early access. In June pre-registration opened, and the official Spanish account @ducks.app.es has posted "#Amino #MuyPronto" (coming very soon) since Jun 12. In Jul 16 early access opened on Play; third-party daily install estimates show about 7,000 within 5 days of launch, over a thousand a day in the first week. That's the pre-registered users converting in a batch. In the week of the Aug 23 "official launch", the estimated daily count jumped 4,400 times. The most-viewed third-party TikTok video is from Jul 3: "AMINO ESTÁ DE REGRESO PERO MUCHO MEJOR EN LA APP DE DUCK" (Amino is back, but much better in the Duck app), with 13k views.
Community leaders. Its website credits list 23 people, 1 developers, and the rest are admins and moderators, mostly from the original Amino communities. Giving former admins a role and letting them bring their entire community and roleplay group over is worth more than any feature.
No paid acquisition seen. After September the install curve flattened to 250–450 a day, with no paid-campaign spikes; over the last 7 days, 2,536 new installs (Google Play installs, 11-06). One caveat: an r/amino Reddit thread titled "Apps Impersonating Other Apps" names Ducks as "showing up everywhere lately, with a lot of alt accounts promoting it, caught by spam filters." The full post isn't accessible, only the summary; unverified.

Where the money comes from: copy Amino+, then collect "support" off-store
The app has ads and in-app purchases from $0.99–$47.99: in-app currency Quack, avatar frames, chat bubbles, community promotion slots, and the Ducks+ membership (including diary cloud backup). This is the model Amino validated years ago.
There is also an off-store "Support us" page (duckapps.com.br/apoie, 11-06) labeled "100% optional", with three monthly subscription tiers: about $8.23 gets an exclusive avatar frame, one community promotion a month and a Discord role; about $22 adds chat bubbles and VIP support; about $274 is a brand tier listing "in-app ad placement" and "direct contact with the developer." There's also a one-time donation starting at R$15. Collecting money off-store avoids the store cut and relies on the "help this project survive" sentiment.
How much could it earn? The 80–90 spot on Brazil's Play social Top Grossing chart has a low bar; near 90 on the same chart sits an established Brazilian community app with 4.53M installs. We estimate monthly revenue in the several-thousand-dollar range (inferred, unverified). That's enough to live on as an individual, not enough for a company.
On the Play store page 11-06 shows 745 ratings and 4.6 stars. The one-star reviews cluster around bugs: the keyboard disappears, the back button exits the app outright, calls won't open. The developer is shipping fast, though. In the Oct 28 update they added dozens of things, including letters, a diary, a "cinema" for watching shows together, weekly tasks, and per-person volume control during calls.
Who's competing for it: an "Amino successor" in every language
| Product | Positioning | Scale | How Ducks differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyodo | English / global | Play 100k+, 2.7k reviews | Around before Amino shut down. March shipped v2, twice the scale. No levels or community leader system. |
| KarboAI | Russian / Arabic | Play 893 reviews | Pitch is AI roleplay bots. Named Ducks on TikTok to poach Portuguese users. |
| Stubborn | Spanish / English | ~16k installs, 2.8 stars | Crashed at launch in May, bad word of mouth. |
| Aminoka | English web pages | Not verified | No app. Writes a pile of 'what to use after Amino shut down' articles to catch search traffic. |
| Discord / Reddit | Global | Giant | Where Amino users most often went, but no 'personal profile in the community + levels + cosmetics + wiki'. |
Scale figures come from each app's Play page and website, 2026 through 3 November.
These products have nearly identical features, all cloning Amino. KarboAI's site copy and Ducks' site ('Find your community / Build your space', 'Chat and voice', 'Create') look like they came from the same template. The real dividing line is language: English went to Kyodo, Russian and Arabic to KarboAI, Portuguese to Ducks. Ducks wasn't the first or the biggest, just the earliest in Portuguese and the most aggressive about shouting it. Brazil was one of Amino's biggest markets back then, so this is the juiciest and emptiest slice.
Few people outside know of it: no media coverage, revenue undisclosed, no big X accounts mention it. Discussion lives only on r/amino, in Portuguese and Spanish TikTok alt accounts, and in rivals tagging each other.
If it were you
C: This fight is mostly over. What's worth learning is the playbook, not this product. Amino has been down for 11 months. English, Russian, Arabic and Portuguese all have successors, and the scattered communities have already found new homes. Building another Amino clone now means going after people who have already settled, with a heavy product and revenue of only a few thousand dollars a month.
Who it suits: veteran moderators of a fandom or roleplay scene in some language, with a few communities they can bring over; or people watching for 'the next platform to shut down' who can launch within weeks of the shutdown news.
Who it's not for: anyone without community ties who's counting on features to win (features here are all the same); anyone who doesn't want to handle content moderation and underage users (14+, voice rooms, DMs; one incident and you're delisted); anyone aiming for a real business (this niche only supports one or two people per language).
How to do it: if you still want to be an Amino successor, only languages nobody has claimed are worth looking at, such as Indonesian, Turkish, or French former-Amino communities (first search TikTok and Discord for '<language> + Amino' to see if anyone holds it). Copy Amino's features directly, no innovation. The better takeaway is to keep this playbook for next time: when a platform with many non-English users or a community tool announces shutdown, launch a replacement in the local language within weeks. Monetize by copying the original platform's cosmetics and memberships, plus an off-platform 'support' subscription.
How to get users: piggyback on the original platform's name for traffic. Put it in waitlist copy, Discord invite links, and early store names, then switch to a neutral name once established to reduce takedown risk. Don't recruit random users; go after the original community's moderators, give them admin roles and mod slots, and have them post 'step-by-step guide to moving over' videos on TikTok. Open a waitlist first, collect enough sign-ups, then launch so first-week installs burst together.
When to move, before what: the replacement window is 3–6 months after shutdown. Ducks opened its waitlist about 6 months after shutdown, which is already late, and succeeded only because nobody was seriously doing Portuguese. When the next platform announces shutdown, have a waitlist page live within a month.
What would show this read is wrong: ① Ducks' Play installs stay above 2027 per day into early 300 and its Top Grossing rank keeps climbing, meaning these communities retain well once moved and cloning deserved to be done earlier and more seriously; ② MediaLab actually launches an official 'Amino 2.0', or Kyodo ships a Portuguese version, meaning the successor business's moat was just 'arriving first' and will scatter under pressure; ③ someone builds an Amino successor in Indonesian or Turkish and it takes off on TikTok, meaning there's still room and the playbook is directly reusable.

One line
A Brazilian solo developer (Crystopher Felisberto, a MEI sole proprietor in Sorocaba, São Paulo state) built an 'Amino clone'. Amino shut down 2025-12-19, and Portuguese and Spanish Amino veterans had nowhere to go. Ducks opened its waitlist in June 2026 with the pitch 'Do you miss Amino?' across X / Instagram / TikTok / Discord, and after launching in mid-July it had about 7 thousand installs in the first week, reaching 49.5k today. It broke out mainly because of the Amino shutdown, plus it claimed Amino's keywords and community entry points (Amino in the name, the discord.gg/amino invite link). The product difference is mainly '100% Brazil, Portuguese first', plus very fast iteration. Monetization copies Amino's virtual cosmetics + memberships and has stably ranked #83–93 on Brazil SOCIAL Top Grossing, though that chart's bar is low.

How to read the curve:
- Cold start didn't start from zero. 5 days after listing it had 7 thousand installs, 1,000–1,500 per day in the first week. This is waitlist users and Discord / Instagram communities converting together.
- The 08-27 jump: single-day +4,420. Matches the TikTok community account @thevampirediaries.ducks posting 'Ducks official 22 launch' on Aug 08-23, so the stretch from mid-July to late August should be early access (the Facebook post title itself reads 'Acceso Anticipado').
- After September it fell back naturally to 250–450 per day, with no obvious paid-acquisition spike.
- Rating-to-install ratio is about 1.5%, and the ratio of daily rating gain to daily install gain holds steady at 1.5%–2%. For a fan-heavy social app mainly used by ages 13+ teens, this ratio is on the high side but not outlandish. Evidence for the recall note's claim of 'obvious prompting for good reviews' is thin. Also, 1 stars account for 21%, and 2 stars are 0; the distribution is a bit odd, cause unverified.
2. Competitors: the 'successor' track after Amino's shutdown
Amino (Narvii, acquired by MediaLab for about $10M in 2021) went dark around 2025-12-11 and officially stopped operating in 2025-12-19; both app stores delisted it. Sources: Wikipedia, aminoka timeline. MediaLab issued no announcement and no migration plan. Fans started a petition on change.org called 'Amino 2.0'; there has been no response to date.
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Ducks differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amino (dead) | iOS / Android / web | 2014–2025-12 | Once hundreds of millions of users | The original prototype; after it shut down, a large Portuguese / Spanish / Russian / Arabic community was left behind |
| Kyodo(Kina Digital Inc.) | iOS / Android / web | Amino was around before the shutdown; 2026-03-14 posts V2 | Play 100K+, 2.7K reviews, 3.9 stars | English / global targeting; started earlier and is twice the size; the aminoka review says it has no level or leader system |
| KarboAI (Kireva, a Russian team) | iOS / Android | 2025 years (2026-03 now on version 3.1) | Play 893 reviews, 4.0 stars; iOS 18 ratings | Mainly Russian / Arabic communities, pitched as "AI roleplay bots"; on TikTok it names Ducks to try to take Portuguese users (@ab.karboai, 9.6K views) |
| Stubborn(Stubbornn) | Android | 2026-05 | 16K installs, 2.8 stars, crashed at launch | Spanish / English, poor reputation; on TikTok someone made a "Stubborn vs Ducks" comparison |
| Aminoka | Web | 2026 | Unverified (the site claims it's active) | Lives off SEO: it wrote a lot of "what to use now that Amino is gone" blog posts; not on the stores |
| Quack: Communities & Creators(com.quack.app) | Android | 2018 | 4.53M installs, also on Brazil's SOCIAL Top Grossing chart (around #90) | A local Brazilian legacy community app aimed at creators; not Amino's fandom / RP structure |
| Discord / Reddit / Tumblr | big tech | — | Giant | The most common place Amino users went, but it doesn't have the personal profile + level + cosmetics + blog / wiki setup |
| Loreverse | Web | 2026 | Not verified | A Portuguese collaborative writing / RP platform; the recall card says it's linked to Ducks, unverified |
Bottom line: there are plenty of competitors, all "Amino clones", but each one has carved up a language: Kyodo takes English, KarboAI takes Russian / Arabic, Ducks takes Portuguese (plus a bit of Spanish). Ducks isn't the first or the biggest, but it's the earliest and most aggressive one to stake out Portuguese.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- The Amino shutdown + keyword squatting (confirmed).
- Early store / community name was "Ducks - Comunidades de Amino", see Facebook group post. The APKPure package page slug is still
amino-ducks-comunidades, see APKPure. - Pre-registration post copy: "Você sente falta do Amino? Call de voz? Ducks veio pra trazer uma nova experiência de comunidade!", see X @DucksApp_.
- The official Discord invite attached to the Instagram pre-registration post is discord.gg/amino, see Instagram. That vanity link is itself siphoning Amino's traffic.
- Later renamed to the neutral "Ducks App - Communities & Chat"; the store description no longer mentions Amino.
- Early store / community name was "Ducks - Comunidades de Amino", see Facebook group post. The APKPure package page slug is still
- Pre-registration + early access + TestFlight (confirmed). Play pre-registration, TestFlight beta, opened in mid-July; the official launch came 8-23 later, with a jump of +4,420 that same week.
- Community leaders moved their whole communities over (confirmed, small scale). On TikTok you can see former Amino community accounts renamed "xxx.ducks" to recruit members, e.g. @thevampirediaries.ducks posting a download tutorial (2.8K views), K-pop / BTS ARMY community accounts, and @knyaducks (a Demon Slayer community). This is key to Ducks' retention: communities moved along with their admins.
- TikTok alt accounts and an official Spanish account (confirmed, small volume). @ducks.app.es started teasing "#Amino #MuyPronto" from 2026-06-13, with single posts getting 179–3.6K views. The top third-party video, "AMINO ESTÁ DE REGRESO PERO MUCHO MEJOR EN LA APP DE DUCK", has 13K views (@masochist.ka2,7-03). Source: TikHub search.
- Alt-account networks pushing it on Reddit (alleged, not fully verified). r/amino has a thread, "Apps Impersonating Other Apps", naming Ducks: "lots of them lately, many alt accounts promoting it, caught by Reddit's spam filter", see reddit (the post body was blocked by Reddit; only the search snippet was retrieved).
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found. The install curve shows no paid-spend spikes; the monetization page sells "in-app ad slots" as sponsor perks, which is the reverse: it is selling traffic.
- Media / big accounts: none. Searches for "Ducks App" and "DucksApp_" in the local x-radar corpus over the last 120 days returned nothing relevant.
4. Why users stay and why they pay
- Familiarity: reviews say "App ótimo! bem familiar para mim" and "até um pouco melhor que o amino" (Play pt-BR reviews, 2026-08 / 09). Old Amino users have almost zero learning curve.
- Social asset migration: communities, admins, and RP groups moved over whole; levels, daily check-ins, chat streaks, and weekly tasks give people a reason to come back every day (official changelog).
- Monetization copied from Amino+: avatar frames, chat bubbles, Quack currency, community boosts, Ducks+ membership. The official site lists 20 sponsors across three tiers (Supporter / Plus / Pro), showing core users will pay to "support the project". The bar for ranking #83–93 on Brazil's SOCIAL Top Grossing chart is low; revenue is estimated at a few thousand USD a month or less (unverified).
- Iteration speed: in 10-28 one update shipped letters, diaries, a Cinema room, weekly tasks, in-call individual volume control, and dozens of other features (official changelog). Negative reviews are mostly about bugs: keyboard issues, crashes, calls that won't open.
5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?
- "100% Brazilian" + Portuguese first: the store subtitle reads "O aplicativo de comunidades 100% brasileiro". Kyodo and KarboAI don't lead with Portuguese; Brazil was one of Amino's biggest markets, and after the shutdown that gap was the emptiest. This is the main reason it took off: not better features, but being first to claim the language that was left open, and being the loudest about it.
- Features are nearly identical to the competitors. KarboAI's site copy ("Find your community / Make a place of your own… Communities / Chat and voice / Posts") and Ducks' site ("Find your community / Build your space… Communities / Chat and voice / Create") have almost the same structure. Everyone is cloning Amino. Features are not the differentiator.
- A community-operations team: the official /creditos page lists 23 people on the team and 1 developers, with the rest being admins and mods, mostly people from the original Amino communities. That is harder to copy than features.
6. How many people can see it
- Revenue isn't public. No TrustMRR listing, the founder hasn't posted numbers, no media coverage, no major X accounts have written about it.
- Discussion is limited to r/amino, Portuguese / Spanish TikTok alt accounts, and competitors calling each other out (KarboAI's TikTok compares itself against it; Ducks' X jabs at others for "copia o Amino inteirinho").
- Verdict: it's being talked about in small circles. The niche is already crowded with Kyodo / KarboAI / Stubborn / Aminoka, but they're all copying Amino, not copying Ducks.
7. Takeaways
- A major platform shutdown = a ready-made demand pool. Claim each language within 3–6 months of the shutdown; the name, package page, Discord vanity link, and pre-registration copy all use the dead platform's name to catch search traffic. Later, switch to a neutral name to reduce trademark and store-review risk.
- Recruit community leaders, not individual users. Give original community admins titles and mod slots so they bring their whole community and RP groups along.
- Monetize with virtual cosmetics and memberships the original platform already proved out, and sell off-store sponsor subscriptions on the "support this project" emotional pitch, avoiding store commissions.
- Other abandoned audiences can run the same playbook (former Amino users in Russian / Arabic / Indonesian, other shut-down fandom platforms), but each language only supports a small team.
8. Uncertain
- How much of the install base is Spanish-speaking (there's an official Spanish account and Spanish Facebook groups) is unverified.
- Revenue scale: we only know it's on the low-barrier end of Brazil's SOCIAL Top Grossing chart (#83–93); the exact figures are unverified.
- The original text of the Reddit complaint about "alt-account network promotion" wasn't retrieved, only the search snippet.
- The link to Loreverse and the early developer name "Duck Apps Inc." come only from the recall card and haven't been independently verified.
- The reason for the 0 share of 2-star ratings in the rating distribution is unknown.
- Long-term risk: the Amino brand / MediaLab actually launches "Amino 2.0" (currently just a petition), or Kyodo localizes into Portuguese.
