Sandwiched between ReelShort and Netflix: a drum pad from an app factory in Da Nang, Vietnam, and how "switching categories" pushed a decade-old genre into Europe
What it is A phone drum pad plus piano tiles game made by Vietnam's Neli Creative, a casual way for beginners to tap out beats and unwind. Free, with lots of ads.
Why it took off Instead of sitting with the crowd of drum pads in the music category, it went into Entertainment. That put it on European country charts with tens of thousands of installs a day. In late October, the studio's 24 apps all scaled up together in Europe, paying back through ads.
CHow you could follow it Don't copy the app; copy its category logic: take your existing light utility apps, put them in a related category with low competition and a low barrier to entry, prove ad payback in cheap markets first, then concentrate on small countries like Poland and the Netherlands to push up the category charts.

In Nov 6, the top 18 free Entertainment apps on Google Play in Poland were short drama and streaming: DramaWave, ReelShort, DramaBox, Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. At #19 was a phone drum pad called Easy Drum Pad: Music Maker, made by Neli Creative in Da Nang, Vietnam. It has 1.91M cumulative installs, and +167k in the last 7 days. The product itself has nothing new: the drum pad genre was fully worked out 2014 years ago. It got in because of three things unrelated to the product: it went into a category nobody else was putting drum pads in, it's backed by a pipeline of 24 apps' worth of revenue, and it has an ad monetization setup that can absorb cheap installs. Below I break down these three things, and why you probably shouldn't copy it as-is, though you can copy its category approach.
A one-star review with 32 likes
The most visible review on the store page is a one-star review from user Tuiba Jacob on Jul 31:
worst game every I think all the others review are paid ones every click ads and can't event play one game peacefully 5 or 6 time ads
32 people marked it as helpful. Another review with 12 likes was more specific: "To actually play it, you have to watch 5 ads first, and then another one shows up after 2 minutes."
That's pretty much the business model of this app: users install it, tap the drum pad a few times, watch a few interstitial ads, and leave. Ads pay for everything.
What it is
A phone drum pad plus a piano tiles game. The store page says "Two Fun Modes: Drum Pad for making beats, Piano Tiles for a relaxing rhythm game." There are also sample packs (Trap, Lofi, EDM, Dubstep), a loop sequencer, recording, and several effects. The positioning is blunt: for beginners and people who want to unwind, "no music theory needed."
The package name crams in two search clusters: easy.drum.pad.beat.maker.music.dj.piano.tiles. Anyone searching for drum pads or piano tiles might see it.
Free to download, with ads. Starting Oct 31 it added in-app purchases, now just $5.99–12.99 (most likely to remove ads or unlock sounds; inferred). The third-party site AppGoblin examined its APK and found 13 ad networks and 2 mediation SDKs integrated, and judged 100% of revenue comes from ads.
How much it grew, and when
| Timeline | Total installs | Daily new installs | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 5 | 840k | A few hundred to three thousand | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| July | 970k → 1.22M | About 15k | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| August to mid-October | 1.22M → 1.62M | About 4–5 thousand | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| Oct 29 → Nov 6 | 1.69M → 1.91M | About 28k (8 days +225k) | Google Play |
The inflection point came around Oct 25. Timeline recorded by the third-party site AppInsider: 10-25 in one day it entered charts in 7 countries including Brazil, Germany, the UK, and Italy; 10-27 France and Sweden; 10-28 Germany top 100,11-01, US, Indonesia, Taiwan. By Nov 2 it was on 26 charts: #16 in Vietnam, #19 in Poland, #23 in Sweden, #24 in the Netherlands.
Before the scale-up it went through updates: 10-15 and 10-22 back-to-back releases, 10-31 added in-app purchases, 11-02 another release, 11-03 changed the IAP pricing (per the Google Play update log and the third-party timeline). Tuning monetization first and then scaling is a standard move for paid-acquisition teams.
The store's "release date" says Jul 9, but in early June it already had 840k installs. Another 11 apps from the same company also have release dates between Jun 23 and Jul 10, and each already had traffic before then. It looks like the whole developer account had its info reset at once during that period, which reset the launch date (inferred). The real launch date wasn't found.
Two numbers suggest most of these installs didn't come from word of mouth. One is the rating rate: 1.91M installs produced only 885 ratings, about 0.46‰; in the same category Groovepad is 14.8‰ and Drum Pad Machine is 4.7‰ (Google Play, 11-06). The other is the rating distribution: 1 stars 139, 2 stars 23, 3 stars 0, 4 stars 139, 5 stars 582, with not a single three-star rating, which doesn't look natural. Together with the "other positive reviews are fake" remark, there's suspicion of incentivized positive reviews (unverified).
Growth has also already slowed: from Nov 4 to 6 it only added 27k in two days, roughly 14k a day (Google Play).
Where the traffic comes from
Switch categories. This is the one move that can be confirmed and is most worth studying. Other drum pads are almost all in "Music & Audio" or "Music Games"; this one is in "Entertainment." The same developer's Easy Piano is in the music category, with its best rank #165 in France; Easy Drum Pad is in Entertainment, #19 in Poland. Above it on the Entertainment chart are only short drama and streaming apps. The real peers aren't on this chart, so tens of thousands of installs a day are enough to reach the top 20, and once it's charted it gets extra exposure from category browsing. AppInsider's model estimates 47% of installs come from store browsing, 38% from search, and 15% from paid ads (model estimate; for reference only).
Push the whole pipeline together. Neli Creative has at least 24 apps running on Google Play, about 37.7M installs combined, almost all new releases from the first half of 2026: drawing, keyboard skins, wallpapers, alarm clocks, instruments, and more. In late October they rose together:
| App | Category | Installs | past 7 days | Best rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Draw & Paint - Classic & Pixel | Art & Design | 5.13M | +350k | #8 in Italy |
| Mechanical Keyboard: RGB Theme | Personalization | 3.77M | +300k | #1 in Vietnam |
| Origami World: Learn & Play | Art & Design | 5M | +290k | #4 in Poland |
| Cute Keyboard: Font & Emoji | Personalization | 4.43M | +200k | #4 in the Netherlands |
| Easy Drum Pad: Music Maker | Entertainment | 1.91M | +170k | #19 in Poland |
(Google Play,11-06)
Daily new installs across the family were about 530k in Oct 31 and about 550k in Nov 3. This isn't one app going viral; the same paid-acquisition and monetization machine is running in batches, and whichever app pays back gets more budget.
Paid acquisition. No direct evidence. Neither Meta's nor TikTok's public European ad libraries show it, and searching the Google Ads Transparency Center by company name and domain returns 0 results. Vietnamese tool studios often run Google app ads through agency accounts, so the advertiser not showing under their own name is normal (inferred). The indirect evidence: entering a dozen-plus European countries in a week, daily installs up four to five times, and an extremely low rating rate.
Search. The title, package name, and description are stuffed with drum pad, beat maker, music maker, DJ, piano tiles, lofi, trap, and EDM.
Creators and media: none. Searching "easy drum pad" on TikTok turns up only tutorial videos for physical practice drum pads; nobody on X has mentioned it in the past 90 days; only download sites and third-party data sites have pages for it.
How the money comes back: buy installs cheaply in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, pay back through interstitial and rewarded video ads, then earn a little more from a $5.99–12.99 in-app purchase tier from people willing to pay. Revenue figures are only third-party estimates: AppGoblin estimates ad revenue above $10k a month, and AppGazers estimates October in-app revenue under $5,000.
Who it's competing with
| Who | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Drum Pad Machine(Easybrain) | 2014 years, 223M installs | Category leader, subscription monetization, far more refined |
| Groovepad(Easybrain) | 2019 years, 118M | Real user word of mouth, rating rate 30× its |
| Beat Maker Pro – DJ Drum Pad(MWM) | 2018 years, 93.7M, on Top Grossing | Subscriptions plus AI, earning from paying users |
| Drum Pads – Beat Maker Go(Gismart) | 2018 years, 64.3M, +280k in the last 7 days | Big company buying installs openly, with ads on TikTok Europe |
| Learn Drum(WorkPlay Space) | 2023 years, 19.4M, +270k in the last 7 days | Similar Asian factory apps |
| Beat Maker Pro(Momcenter) | 2025-130M, +7k in the last 220 days | Drums plus guitar plus piano, growing faster than it |
| Easy Drum – Real Music Drum(AVA GAMES) | 2026-64.9M, +7k in the last 280 days | Same-period new release, also named Easy Drum, growing faster than it does |
| Beat Maker Pro: Drum Pad(LAMAI) | 2026-41.5M, +7k in the last 220 days | Nearly identical gameplay, with a rating rate of 0.4‰ as well |
| GarageBand, web drum pads (drum-pad.com and similar) | Preinstalled on Apple devices / unverified | Free, no install needed |
Easy Drum Pad's +167k over 7 days is middle-of-the-pack among same-period drum pad launches. The category isn't short on players. What's missing is a drum pad chart nobody is putting drum pads on.
Nobody knows about it yet, but there's nothing to fight over
It has almost no visibility: no press coverage, no one posting revenue, no discussion on X. On paper that's good. But this kind of 'nobody knows about it' isn't worth much: drum pads are a decade-old red ocean, big companies are spending on it, and a batch of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian factory apps are spending too, and its own growth has already started to slow. The part nobody has spelled out is the category-switch move itself.
If it were you
One-line verdict. Don't copy this app. It worked because of a studio that ships 24 apps, a ready-made paid acquisition and ad monetization pipeline, and nothing in the product itself you can learn from. What you can learn is one move: put an app from a mature category into a sibling category where it doesn't belong, and use a modest budget to buy chart exposure.
Who it fits. Small teams that already have AdMob monetization experience, have run Google App Ads, and own a few lightweight tool apps with reusable code. This play runs on being able to work out exactly how much each install costs and how many days it takes to pay back.
Who it doesn't fit. First-time app makers counting on organic installs (the front pages of these charts are all paid); anyone wanting subscription or in-app purchase revenue (this one has IAP and has never charted in Top Grossing); anyone trying to build 'a better drum pad' (Easybrain and MWM have been doing that for a decade, and users here want a quick tap-and-go, not a good drum pad).
How to do it. Take a lightweight tool or casual app you already have, or can ship quickly, and on Google Play go through the several categories it could plausibly sit in. Check the top 30 entry bar in each country: if the top is a crowd of unrelated big products (short dramas, streaming, banks) while positions 20–50 take only a few thousand to tens of thousands of installs a day, you've found a mismatched category. Put the app there, and write the title and description to fuse two adjacent search-term clusters, the way this one did (inferred). Note that Google Play has policies on categories and descriptions: the category has to make sense, so don't place it in one that's clearly unrelated.
How to acquire users. Google App Ads. First prove ads pay back in cheap markets like Latin America and Southeast Asia, then pick one or two small European countries (Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, where chart bars are low) and concentrate spend to push into category charts. Once you chart, check whether browse traffic can offset the paid acquisition cost. Tune ad placements and the ad-removal IAP before scaling up. That's what they did.
When it stops working. This isn't a holiday play, but the entry bar moves: today the entertainment chart's top is short dramas, and once drum pads and pianos pile in, the bar disappears. You can test this now with the app you have.
Signs you've misread it. ① Before December, Easy Drum Pad drops out of the top 50 on the Poland and Sweden entertainment charts and daily installs fall to a few thousand, meaning the volume disappears as soon as you stop spending and category browse traffic can't hold it up; ② peers like LAMAI, AVA GAMES, and Momcenter start putting drum pads into entertainment too, meaning the gap has been filled; ③ you place an app in a category, spend budget for a month, and still can't crack the top 50, meaning the bar is higher than you calculated. Pick a different category.

Bottom line
It's one app from the production line of a Da Nang, Vietnam 'tool and casual app factory' (24 apps in our library on Play, 37.7M installs combined; AppBrain counts 55 apps, about 40M installs), a drum pad and piano tiles hybrid monetized entirely through ads (AppGoblin: ads 100%, 13 ad networks, 2 mediation SDKs). The product has nothing new. It worked because of its distribution play: entering the less competitive Entertainment category for chart exposure, with the whole studio pushing volume into Europe in late October, backed by an ad monetization model that can absorb cheap installs.
1. Data: how much did it actually grow?
(Source: our googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06; AppstoreSpy historical backfill app_day_ext, labeled 'AppstoreSpy estimate')
| Timeline | Total installs | Average daily new installs |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-06-05 (AppstoreSpy's first observation) | 842k | A few hundred to three thousand |
| 2026-07-09 ~ 07-31 (after the store 'release date') | 970k → 1.22M | About 15k |
| Mid August–October | 1.22M → 1.62M | About 4–5 thousand |
| 10-26 ~ 11-06 | 1.69M → 1.91M | About 20k (+167k in the last 7 days) |
- 885 ratings, rating-to-install ratio = 0.46‰. Veteran peers in the niche: Groovepad 14.8‰, Drum Pad Machine 4.7‰, Gismart Drum Pads 3.7‰; the same developer's Draw & Paint 0.5‰; LAMAI's Beat Maker Pro 0.4‰ (googleplay library 2026-11-06). A ratio this low fits 'lots of low-intent, bought installs', not organic word of mouth.
- Rating distribution [1★139, 2★23, 3★0, 4★139, 5★582] (app_snap 2026-11-06). The three-star share is exactly 0, which doesn't look natural. The top negative review on Play, with 32 likes (2026-07-31): "I think all the others review are paid ones, every click ads … 5 or 6 time ads"; another: "to actually play it's 5 ads and u can play for 2 min after another ad". This suggests possible review solicitation and very heavy ad density.
- The 'release date 2026-07-09' isn't the real release date: as of June 5, AppstoreSpy already saw 840k installs. The 'release dates' of 11 other apps from the same developer all fall between 06-23 and 07-10, but each already had installs before then (e.g., Neon Brush had 1.04M by 05-20). It looks like the whole developer account had its info changed or its regions expanded in one go between late June and early July, resetting the store release date. The real first-release date is unverified; the September 8 snapshot was already v1.4.19 (apppage.net), so the version history is not short.
- Charts (chart_rank): 10-29 entered the entertainment free charts in 17 countries (best was Vietnam #36); 11-02 climbed to 26 chart positions, Vietnam #16, Poland #19, Sweden #23, Netherlands #24; 11-06 at Poland #19, Sweden 31, Vietnam 36, Netherlands 37, Germany 42, Italy 43, France 58, UK 78, US 166. AppInsider's timeline: 10-25 added 7 new countries in one day (Brazil, Germany, UK, Italy…), 10-27 France and Sweden, 10-28 Germany Top 100,10-29, UK and Italy Top 100,11-01, Indonesia, Taiwan, US.
- Version cadence: 10-15 v1.4.19 (update notes 'Bring the World Cup spirit', new original drum templates), 10-22 v1.5.1 / v1.5.2,10-31 added IAP ($2.99–14.99), 11-02 v1.5.3,11-03 changed IAP to $5.99–12.99 (AppInsider timeline + app_snap). In other words, they updated the app and added IAP first (most likely ad removal), then scaled into Europe.
2. Competitors
Does the same thing: phone drum pads / beat makers / percussion simulators. The category matured 2014 years ago and has long been a red ocean.
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drum Pad Machine(Easybrain) | Android/iOS | 2014 | 223M installs | Category pioneer, subscription-monetized, in the music category |
| Groovepad(Easybrain) | Android/iOS | 2019 | 118M | Same as above, more polished |
| Beat Maker Pro – DJ Drum Pad(MWM) | Android/iOS | 2018 | 93.7M, in Top Grossing | Subscription + AI, making money from paid users |
| Real Drum(Kolb Apps) | Android | 2012 | 192M | Realistic drum kit, not a drum pad |
| Drum Pads – Beat Maker Go(Gismart) | Android/iOS | 2018 | 64.3M, +280k/7 days | Big-company paid acquisition; TikTok Europe has ads |
| BandLab | Android / iOS / web | 2015 | 144M | A real DAW plus a community |
| Learn Drum – Pad & Beat Maker(WorkPlay Space) | Android | 2023 | 19.4M, +270k/7 days | Asian factory apps of the same kind, filed under Music |
| Beat Maker Pro – Drum Pad(Momcenter) | Android | 2025-12 | 9.88M, +220k/7 days | Same-type clone, adds guitar and piano |
| Beat Maker Pro: Drum Pad(LAMAI) | Android | 2026-04 | 1.51M, +220k/7 days | Almost the same play (rating ratio is also 0.4‰) |
| Easy Drum – Real Music Drum(AVA GAMES) | Android | 2026-06 | 4.92M, +280k/7 days | New app from the same period, also named Easy Drum, filed under Music Games |
| Sprunki All Phases Beat Maker(Gotstar) | Android | 2026-03 | 14.5M | Riding the Incredibox/Sprunki hype |
| GarageBand Live Loops / Drummer | iOS big-company feature | — | Preinstalled by Apple | Free, pro-grade, iOS only |
| drum-pad.com, soundtools.io beat maker | Web | — | Not verified | No-install web drum pad |
| Magic Tiles 3 (Amanotes, Vietnam) | Android/iOS | 2017 | Not checked | Source of the "piano tiles" mechanic; this app stuffs it in as a second mode |
Bottom line: competition is heavy, and big players (Easybrain, MWM, Gismart) plus a batch of 2025–26-year-old Asian factory apps are buying paid installs at the same time. Easy Drum Pad's growth (+167k/7 days) is only mid-pack among its new peers, below AVA GAMES' Easy Drum, WorkPlay Space and Momcenter.
3. Growth tactics: where users come from
- Studio portfolio, scaling together (confirmed as a data pattern): Neli's 24 apps are 11-06 charting simultaneously in 30 countries (16 apps in Vietnam, 12 each in Brazil and Mexico, 11 in Poland, 11 in the US); family daily new installs 10-31 about 528k, 11-03 about 549k (googleplay library app_day rollup). Origami World (+290k/7 days, Poland Arts & Design #4), Draw & Paint (+350k/7 days, Italy #8) and Mechanical Keyboard (Vietnam Personalization #1) are all climbing at the same time. This is the same acquisition/monetization machine running in batches, not this one app blowing up on its own.
- Paid acquisition (likely, but not directly seen in ad libraries): Meta Ad Library, TikTok European Ad Library and our Google Ad Library show no Neli ads or this package name (these are watchlist-based libraries, so no hit doesn't mean no spend); Google Ads Transparency Center returns no advertiser for "Neli" / the legal entity name, but searching the domain neli-creative.com returns 0 ads. Vietnamese tool-app studios often buy Google App Campaigns (UAC) through agency accounts, so not seeing their own advertiser name is normal. Indirect evidence: ① it entered a dozen-plus European countries within a week of 10-25, with installs jumping from 5 thousand/day to 2–30k/day; ② rating ratio 0.46‰, far below organically grown peers; ③ AppInsider's model estimates "15% paid, 38% organic search, 47% organic browse" (model estimate, reference only).
- Category arbitrage (confirmed): similar apps are almost all in MUSIC_AND_AUDIO or GAME_MUSIC, but this one is in ENTERTAINMENT. In Poland's Entertainment Top Free chart, the top 18 are short dramas (DramaWave, ReelShort, DramaBox) and streaming (Netflix, Prime, Disney+); this is #19. A few tens of thousands of installs a day can chart, and charting brings "browse" organic traffic (AppInsider estimates 47%).
- Store search / ASO (confirmed as their approach): package name, title and description are packed with keywords (drum pad, beat maker, music maker, DJ, piano tiles, lofi, trap, EDM), with one description covering both "drum pad" and "piano tiles" searches.
- Content and creators: no evidence. Searching "easy drum pad" on TikTok returns only practice-pad tutorial videos; about 90 days of X corpus shows 0 posts; no press coverage, only auto-generated APK pages like softonic, CNET Download and updatestar.
- Review prompting (suspected, unverified): a three-star-heavy rating spread for 0, plus high-upvoted negative reviews saying "all the other good reviews are fake."
Where the money comes from: AppGoblin classifies IAP 0% / Ad 100%, integrates 13 ad networks + 2 mediation layers (AdMob etc.), estimated monthly revenue $10K+; AppGazers estimates October IAP gross < $5K. User feedback says "every tap is an ad". So the model is: buy cheap installs (Latin America, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe), recoup through eCPM on interstitial and rewarded ads, plus a $5.99–12.99 ad-removal/unlock IAP to capture some high-value users.
4. Differentiation
- Product-wise: Drum Pad + Piano Tiles in one, aimed at "beginners / stress relief", with Lofi, Trap and EDM sample packs. Compared with Groovepad and Drum Pad Machine it is shallower and more ad-heavy, so there's no product edge; "two-in-one" also shows up in clones like Momcenter (drums + guitar + piano).
- The real difference is distribution: getting filed under Entertainment for chart exposure, and running the studio's acquisition and monetization machine in batches, pushing the whole account's product line through Europe on one rhythm.
- So differentiation is not the main reason it took off; the main reasons are the play and the studio's ability to scale.
5. How many people have seen it
Few people know it yet: no press, no X discussion, no public revenue; it only has pages on auto-data sites like AppGazers, AppGoblin, AppInsider and AppBrain. But this category is already crowded with factory clones (LAMAI, Momcenter, WorkPlay Space, AVA GAMES), and "nobody knows" doesn't mean "nobody is doing it".
6. Takeaways
- A variant of a mature category, placed in a less competitive category (Entertainment), trading modest volume for chart exposure and browse traffic.
- One developer account spreads 20 light tool / casual apps across different categories, sharing acquisition, monetization and ASO pipelines; whichever app's ROI turns positive gets more budget (this round pushed Europe in a batch in late October).
- Tune monetization first (add IAP, adjust ad placements, ship 3 versions from 10-22 to 11-03), then scale.
- Package name and title stitch two search clusters (drum pad + piano tiles) into one app.
7. Uncertain
- Real launch date (the store date was reset; it already had 840k installs by early June); whether the "piano.tiles" in the package name means it started as a piano-tiles game and was later switched to a drum pad is unverified.
- Acquisition channels and spend: no creatives seen directly in the three ad libraries; agency-account buying is only a guess.
- Whether reviews are incentivized or faked: suspected, not verified.
- Revenue: only third-party model estimates (ads $10K+/month, IAP < $5K/month).
- Whether the European scale-up can last: 11-05 and 11-06 daily gains have already fallen back to around 14k.
