# Says it's a volume app, but installs and swaps your home screen: a "volume launcher" with 1M installs in four months, money from the Yahoo search bar

**What it is** An Android home-screen launcher marketed as "volume up to 100%+". Once installed, it replaces the default home screen and routes home-screen search to Yahoo.

**Why it took off** Behind it is a company that specializes in "feature hook + default home screen + search revenue share". It pushes prompts inside other tool apps and adds paid acquisition, scaling in batches in the US. Users can't switch back or find an uninstall option, and the search bar gets used every day.

**C** **How you could follow it** Stop building volume-themed apps. Teams with existing Android tool-app traffic and access to search revenue share channels can borrow its topic selection and cross-promotion methods, but should be upfront about the home-screen swap, keep an uninstall path, and avoid delisting risk.

C grade: the unit economics are clear and worth studying, but three or four companies already bid on the same theme, the early movers are three times its size, and making money depends on search revenue share channels and ad budgets that indie devs can't get. It also sits on the edge of Google Play policy. Few people know about it yet

A company registered in the Cayman Islands published an app called Volume Control Home, a "volume booster" on Google Play. It only advertised in one market, the US, and reached 1.01M installs in four months. What it really sells isn't volume: once installed, it becomes your default home screen, with the search bar on it running through Yahoo. Below is how this business works, where its users come from, who got there earlier, and whether you should follow it.

### A person trying to fix a microphone

In Oct 30, a US user gave it one star on Google Play: "My microphone broke, I installed an app called microphone cleaner, it recommended this one, and it swapped out my entire home screen. Don't install it."

Scrolling further back, another one-star review from Oct 7 gives more detail: first a prompt appeared saying "please download the updated PDF reader", and after updating, the install prompt for this volume app popped up. "I kept tapping install, it kept asking me to install, and there wasn't even a close button."

These two reviews pretty much explain where the app comes from: it isn't something people search for or get recommended. It gets pushed over from other small tool apps.

### What it actually is

The store page title and first half are all about volume: push media volume past 100%, adjust ringtone, alarm, and notification volume separately, a big volume dial, and a volume widget for the home screen. Further down is the real pitch:

- "A fast, clean launcher that replaces your default home screen"

- "Built-in web search bar"

- "Swipe right for news and content feeds personalized for you"

Small print at the bottom of the Google Play listing (11-06): "By tapping 'Install' you agree to install Volume Control Home and set the app's search to the service provided... This app will update your search settings, changing home-screen search to use Yahoo."

So volume is the hook, the product is a home-screen launcher, and the revenue is the search ad share from the home-screen search bar, plus the swipe-right feed and ads on the home screen. The negative reviews describe the same thing: "putting ads at the top of my home screen", "rearranged all my app icons and added a search bar".

The logic of building a launcher is simple: every time a user unlocks their phone, they see its home screen and its search bar. A normal tool app gets opened once or twice a day; a home screen gets seen dozens of times a day.

### Who's behind it

The developer account is named Utility Apps Home, with contact email eastendtechltd@gmail.com. It's run by East End Technologies (also using the EET Apps name), website eastendtech.ky. In their own words: "acquire high-quality audiences through direct-to-consumer marketing, then monetize through tier-one ad partners like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft."

This company is no rookie. Under its other account, Homescreen Apps, it runs Easy Homescreen (24.4M installs), Weather Now Launcher (7.18M), Email Homescreen (2.85M), and Bible Homescreen (410k). They're all the same template with different themes. Under the same account, Settings Home launched in Aug 31, already at 908k installs, and sits at #3 in the US store's Productivity free chart (Google Play, 11-06).

### How the volume built up

Cumulative installs as shown publicly on Google Play: Oct 29 954k, Nov 6 1.01M, +55k in one week, averaging about 7,800 per day.

Third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy) for monthly new installs show the real playbook: July about 9,000, August 200k, September 350k, October 410k, and the first 5 days of November 36k. The curve doesn't climb smoothly; it jumps in steps. From the August low, daily installs went from 13k to 20k, and on 9-03, 9-10, 10-04, and 10-21 single days spiked to 36k–50k. That looks like spend released in batches, not word of mouth spreading.

Where users come from, the evidence we can see points the same way:

| Source | Evidence | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation slots and pop-up ads inside other utility apps | "microphone cleaner recommended me to install it" (10-30); "it made me update a PDF reader first, then popped up with no close button" (10-07); reviews on the sister app Settings Home include "installed through a fake ad" | High |
| Paid acquisition | The company's website says it relies on direct marketing for users; installs rise in steps; it only charts in the US | High |
| Store search | Name and description are stuffed with volume booster and beyond 100% type terms; a #6–#10 ranking in the US Music & Audio free chart also brings some organic traffic | Inferred, share unknown |
| Content, creators, word of mouth | 30 posts on X in the last 0 days; searching its name on TikTok returns only home amplifiers and wall volume knobs; no discussion on Reddit | Essentially none |

Choosing "sound" as the theme is deliberate. Microphone cleaning, speaker cleaning, and volume boosting are a chain of adjacent needs, and users move from one to the next, so intent is closest. Positive reviews reveal the audience: "my phone volume is always too low, people have to repeat themselves to me" (10-18), and one signed "rock preacher Roy B Simpson Jr." It skews older with weaker hearing, and they don't guard against "tap install and your home screen gets swapped."

### Why users stick around

Not because it's good, but because it's hard to get rid of. The same complaint keeps showing up in one-star reviews:

- "It hides itself, very hard to uninstall" (10-25)

- "I had to go to Play Store to uninstall it" (10-21)

- "To change it back I had to factory reset, and all my photos were gone" (10-21)

Every extra day a user stays on this home screen, the search box earns another day of revenue. It has 5,297 ratings averaging 4.23 stars, but the distribution is lopsided on both ends: 1-star 12.7%, 5-star 69.5%. Of the 150 recent reviews, 1-star: 69, 5-star: 56. Most of the 5-star reviews are short lines like "THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS" and "wonderful," and the developer reply says "feel free to share with friends and family." Whether it prompts for ratings in-app can't be seen from outside.

As of early November it's slowing: in late October daily installs fell to 5,000–6,000, and in the US Music & Audio free chart it slid from #10-29–#11-02 to #6 and then #10,11-03, dropping out of the top 200 of the US overall Free Apps chart. The timing lines up with its sister app Settings Home scaling up in October, so spend looks like it was moved over (inferred).

### It isn't even the first to this theme

The "volume + launcher + search" combo, AtomApplications' Volume Control Sound Launcher, was live in Dec 2025 3 already: now 3.36M installs, the store page says search is "powered by Google, Brave, and Yahoo," and it warns "as a launcher, your home screen layout may change after install." Atom runs 11 "XX Launcher" apps, including flashlight, clap-to-find-phone, weather, and notes, totaling about 40M installs (AppBrain).

Other same-theme apps:

| Product | Launched | Scale | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume Control Sound Launcher(AtomApplications) | 2025-12 | 3.36M installs | The pioneers, same playbook |
| Volume Control Launcher(Tiki Media) | 2026-07-07 | 197k, +67k in a week | Launched 6 days earlier, now growing faster than it |
| Volume Control Home Launcher (small developer) | 2026, date unknown | Unknown | Name piggybacks on existing terms |
| Volume Booster GOODEV and other long-running boosters | 2012–2023 | 33M to 89M | No home screen swap; earns from interstitial ads and ad-removal IAP |
| System volume panel, Samsung Sound Assistant | Built into the system | All Android phones | Controlling each volume channel separately has always existed |

Functionally it has no real edge; reviews say "it didn't make it any louder" and "the sound got worse." Its only difference is the business model: pick a function that's easy to write into an ad and easy to search for as a hook, install as the default home screen, route search to Yahoo, finish one theme and move to the next, with a separate domain per theme and a separate account per new theme.

### How much money

No revenue is public. A third-party estimate puts it at about 80k DAU and about $169 a day in revenue. That number doesn't square with a company that keeps buying 30–400k installs a month for months on end, so it likely undercounts search revenue share, and even as a reference it's barely usable (unverified). Three things are certain: no in-app purchases, ads are shown, and search goes through Yahoo. A company that has scaled the same template to over twenty million installs while constantly opening new themes suggests the math works for them (inferred).

### If it were you

**C. You can learn a very tight unit economic model, but don't copy it.** At least three or four companies are already spending on this theme, and the pioneer is three times bigger. The part that actually makes money needs something you have and others don't.

**Who it suits** : small companies already running Android utility apps, holding hundreds of thousands to millions of existing users, able to run UAC or AppLovin, and able to negotiate a search revenue-share channel (Yahoo, Bing's search syndication, or a distributor). For you, it's a way to monetize existing traffic one more layer deep.

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie developers with no existing traffic and no paid acquisition experience; anyone who can't get a search revenue share (without it, the launcher only has feed ads, and acquisition cost never comes back); anyone unwilling to risk their developer account being banned.

**How to do it (if you still want to)** : don't do volume again. Use its method for choosing hooks: high search volume, something that fits in a one-line ad, and adjacent to a theme your existing apps already cover. Don't copy forced takeovers or hiding the icon. Before install, clearly state the home screen will change, offer an entry point that works without replacing the home screen, and put the uninstall path in plain view. That cuts your ban risk a lot, and retention will be lower; count that cost in.

**How to acquire users** : cross-promote from your own or partners' adjacent utility apps (the cleaning, speaker, and microphone chain), then add paid acquisition; target only the US, where search CPMs are highest.

**When is "before"** : there's no clear deadline. It's already slowing down on its own, and the theme's window looks narrower than when it launched.

**What would show you read it wrong** : (1) Google Play delists it, Atom, or Settings Home for device-settings changes or deceptive installs, which would mean this path is closing; (2) the reverse: over the next few months EET and Atom keep launching new themes monthly, and the new themes still break into the US top ten in their categories, which would mean the model has more room than it appears and is worth a B for teams with traffic and a search channel.

## Why Volume Control Home (com.eet.volume.launcher) could run

### Bottom line

Volume Control Home is one of the apps in the "feature bait + default home screen + Yahoo search revenue share" pipeline run by East End Technologies (EET Apps), a Cayman company. It uses "volume boost / volume control" as the hook, but what installs is a launcher that sets itself as the default home screen, reroutes the home screen search box to Yahoo, and earns back its cost through search revenue share and feed ads. EET didn't invent the theme: AtomApplications' Volume Control Sound Launcher was live in 2025-12, and it now has 3.36M installs. EET followed after the theme was validated. This one ran because of paid acquisition and deceptive installs, plus users whose home screens were swapped and can't switch back (passive retention), with little to do with product differentiation. It's now slowing, and the budget appears to have moved to its sister app Settings Home.

### I. Data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)

- Cumulative global installs: 10-29 is 953,694,11-06 is 1,008,306,7 days +54,612, about 7,800 per day.

- Curve since launch (AppstoreSpy estimates, app_day_ext): first on the store 2026-07-13. Added about 8,800 in July, then +204k in August, +347k in September, +411k in October, and +36k in the first 5 days of November. It clearly accelerated at the end of August (from 8-27), with daily adds of 13k to 20k; on 9-03, 9-10, 10-04, and 10-21 it jumped to 36k to 50k a day. The curve rises in steps, like money being spent in batches. Daily adds dropped to 5,000 to 6,000 in late October, which lines up with when its sister app Settings Home scaled up in October.

- Charts: it charted in the US store only. On the US Music & Audio Top Free chart it sat at #10-29 to #11-02 for a while, then #6, #7, #8, #8, #10 as it slid. On the overall US Top Free chart it sat between #10-29 and #11-02, around #162 to #192, and from 11-03 dropped out of the top 200.

- Ratings: 5,297 reviews, 4.23 stars, adding +34 to +52 reviews a day; reviews/installs about 0.5%. Histogram [671, 107, 216, 617, 3682]: 1 stars 12.7%, 5 stars 69.5%, so it's bimodal. Recent review sample of 150: 1 69-star, 5 56-star.

- No in-app purchases (offers_iap=False), ad-supported (ad_supported=True), version 1.6.4.

- A recovery card cites AppSpy: about 80k DAU and daily revenue around $169; AppGazers: in-app purchase revenue <$5K. We haven't verified these numbers.

### 2. Who's behind it

- Developer account "Utility Apps Home", contact email eastendtechltd@gmail.com, website volumecontrolhome.com. Another app under the same account is Settings Home (com.eet.settings.launcher), launched 2026-08-31, 908k installs, #3 in the US Productivity chart.

- The company's older account "Homescreen Apps" has Easy Homescreen (24.4M installs), Weather Now Launcher (7.18M), Email Homescreen (2.85M), and Bible Homescreen (410k). The company website eastendtech.ky states: "builds high-quality audiences via direct-to-consumer marketing and monetizes those audiences via first-class advertising Partners such as Google, Yahoo & Microsoft". See the same batch report, play_com.eet.settings.launcher.

### 3. Where the money comes from (confirmed)

Play listing page (read via jina, 2026-11-06), original text: "By clicking 'install', I accept and agree to install Volume Control Home and setting the application's search functionality to that provided by the service... The app will update your search settings and will change your Homescreen search experience to use Yahoo." The page also says "A fast, clean launcher that replaces your default home screen", "Built-in web search bar", "Swipe right for a personalized feed of news and content". The Data safety section says personal information and app activity are shared with third parties.

- Monetization: first, the home screen search box runs through Yahoo, earning a search ad revenue share; second, the right-swipe news feed and ads on the home screen. Negative reviews include "put ads at the top of your home screen", "tons of ads", "garbage notifications and malware spam".

- Why it has to be a launcher: users see its home screen and search box every time they unlock the phone, so search traffic comes in every day.

### 4. Where the users come from

1. **Paid acquisition + deceptive installs + cross-promotion (high confidence)**
    - "I got this app as suggestion from app called microphone cleaner (my microphone don't work) AND IT CHANGED MY INTIRE HOME SCREEN" (10-30). It was recommended from a "microphone cleaner"-type utility app, which is direct evidence of cross-promotion or ad-slot traffic.
    - "I didn't even use the app after it wanted to be my home launcher. There is no option to just use the app without it integrating with your home screen" (10-25). It can't be used unless you set it as the default home screen.
    - Reviews like "it modified my home screen without my permission", "took over my phone without permission", "Hijacker", "Malware with features" appear dozens of times in the sample.
    - Reviews of the sister app Settings Home include "installs through fake ad" and "pop-up ad would not let me ... I had no choice but to install it". A user on the Samsung community described the full chain for the same company's Weather Launcher in 2024: they saw an Instagram ad, installed one app, and were then redirected to install a launcher.
    - Conclusion: traffic comes from ad slots or recommendations inside other utility apps (microphone cleaner, speaker cleaner, and similar sound-adjacent niches), plus paid ads. The specific ad network is unverified.

2. **Meta Ad Library** : the metaads library returns no advertisers matching EET, AtomApplications, or these domains. The library only tracks the products on its list, so no results doesn't mean they aren't running ads.

3. **Content / creators / SEO** : none found. x-radar returned 0 posts for "Volume Control Home" over the last 30 days; TikTok (TikHub) results were all home amplifiers and wall volume knobs, none for this app; no Reddit discussion. The only web hits are auto-indexed pages on download sites like APKPure, AppBrain, BlueStacks, and CNET.

4. **Store search** : the name and description are packed with high-volume terms like "volume booster / control / beyond 100%", and ranking #6 to #10 in the US Music category brings some organic traffic. The share is unverified.

5. **Audience** : some positive reviews say "phones that just don't have a way to boost the volume up enough to really hear what was said" and "Rocking and Rolling Reverend". That matches EET's usual audience: older users, people with hearing difficulties, and people who don't guard against deceptive installs.

### 5. Why it sticks around

- Passive retention: once it becomes the default home screen, the icons get rearranged, its own icon is hidden, and uninstall is hard to find. Reviews: "hard to uninstall", "tries to hide the app so it's hard to uninstall", "I had to go to the Google Play Store to Uninstall". Some people even did a factory reset. As long as users keep it on the home screen for a few more days, search revenue share keeps coming in.

- Most of the 5 five-star reviews are short, like "THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS", "wonderful", "sharing", and the developer replies include "Feel free to share the app with your friends and family". There may be an in-app rating prompt, unverified.

### 6. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| System volume panel / Samsung Sound Assistant | Big-company features | Built into the system | All Android phones | Adjusting volume across apps is built into the system; what it adds is "boosts beyond 100%" and home screen takeover. |
| Volume Control Sound Launcher(AtomApplications) | Android | 2025-12-03 | 3.36M installs, +40k over 7 days, #23 in the US Tools Top Free chart. | **Early movers in the same model** : volume + launcher + search (Google/Brave/Yahoo). AtomApplications also has 11 "XX Launcher" apps, including flashlight, clap-to-find-phone, weather, and notes, with about 40M installs total according to AppBrain. |
| Volume Control Launcher(Tiki Media LTD) | Android | 2026-07-07 | 197k installs, +67k in 7 days | Launched 6 days before EET with nearly the same theme, smaller in scale, and now growing faster. |
| Volume Control Home Launcher(com.speaker.volume.launcher.sound.controller) | Android | 2026 (unverified) | Not verified | A small developer copying the trend (gmail address), with "Volume Control Home" in the name. |
| Volume Booster GOODEV / 360 Tool Volume Booster / Sound Booster(Prometheus) | Android | 2012 to 2023 | 33M to 89M installs | A pure volume booster that doesn't replace the home screen, monetized with interstitial ads and an ad-removal IAP. |
| Volume Styles(Tom Bayley)/ Precise Volume | Android | 2017 to 2020 | 25M / 5.36M | Products that actually improve the volume panel or offer fine-grained control, relying on word of mouth and a premium tier |
| Easy Homescreen / Settings Home etc. (same company) | Android | 2023 to 2026 | 24.4M / 910k, etc. | Same template, different theme |

### VII. Differentiation

There's no functional difference: adjusting volume is built into the system, and established volume boosters have been doing "beyond 100%" for a decade. Reviews include "it's not even that loud" and "made my sound and volume worse". Even the "volume + launcher" combo was first built by AtomApplications. Its real "difference" is the business model: it picks a feature that's easy to write into an ad and easy to find in search as the hook, installs a default home screen, swaps the search box to Yahoo for revenue share, then copies the playbook across niches (volume, then settings). That's why it runs: paid acquisition costs can be recovered through search revenue share and passive retention, which lets it push to 1M installs in the US alone. The product itself isn't the reason.

### 8. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: few people know about it. Revenue isn't public, 0 posts on X, no media coverage. The only things you can find are download-site listings and negative reviews.

- Copycats: already crowded. Same-niche players include AtomApplications (the pioneer, 3.36M), Tiki Media (197k, growing), and com.speaker.volume.launcher.sound.controller (name copied outright). AppBrain also shows a same-named knockoff from SGP FOODS. Zooming out, the whole "XX Launcher" category is run by several companies, including EET, AtomApplications, and Tiki Media.

### 9. What others can learn

- The unit economics of "utility hook + default home screen + search/news feed monetization": EET and AtomApplications have both reached tens of millions of installs.

- Pick the "sound, microphone, speaker" niche: users arriving from adjacent utilities (microphone cleaner, speaker cleaner) have the closest intent and convert best.

- When a niche's acquisition efficiency drops, switch to the next one (Volume slowed, spend moved to Settings). Each niche gets its own domain, and each new niche gets a new developer account.

- Risks: forced home screen takeover, hard-to-find uninstall, deceptive installs. This sits at the edge of Google Play's deceptive behavior and device settings change policies, and reviews already say "I'll report them". Weigh takedown risk before copying it.

### 10. What's still uncertain

- The specific acquisition channels (Meta, Google UAC, AppLovin/Unity interstitials, or paid recommendation slots inside utility apps) and spend; who made the "microphone cleaner" app.

- The Yahoo revenue share rate, retention days, and whether AppSpy's estimate of 80k DAU and $169 daily revenue is accurate.

- The installs and launch date of the copycat com.speaker.volume.launcher.sound.controller.

- How many of the 5 five-star reviews were prompted in-app.
