Search "Emoji Battery" and you get sixty identical apps: a follower that showed up four months late, and got 1.42M installs in three months
What it is An Android app that replaces the battery icon at the top of your phone with an emoji that changes expression, plus stickers and a pet that walks around the screen. Free, ad-supported.
Why it took off TikTok has fed the "swap your battery for an emoji" trend for three years. iPhones can't do it, but Android can. It rides the same names as the leader to capture search traffic, climbs charts in cheap countries like Brazil and Turkey, and most likely bought traffic too.
CHow you could follow Don't make the 61th version with the same name. To get in, switch audiences and languages (e.g., local aesthetics in Japan and Korea), or build a less ad-heavy version and test with small budgets in cheap countries using three-to-five-second vertical video creatives.

In November 5, a TikTok account called @adhdancemom filmed a short video with a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: the battery icon at the top of the phone had turned into a little emoji that changes expression, and a small animated pet was sitting at the edge of the screen. The caption was just one line: "The app in this video is called Emoji Battery, so cute!" But she didn't say which one. Search for the name on Google Play and you get a whole page of apps that look nearly identical. The one below is a Vietnamese small-studio version that launched in August, and in under three months it got 1.42M installs. It has nothing new to offer. What's worth looking at is how it squeezes through in a red ocean, and whether you should jump in at all.
What it is
Emoji Battery: Status Bar Icon, in Google Play's Personalization category, launched 2026-08-14, developer TRUNGHIEUCOM. The first line of the store page is "Bored of the same old battery icon?" It lists seven features at once: swap the battery for emoji, change the status bar icon size and color, add up to 5 animated stickers, an on-screen pet (it walks around the screen and can be dragged), "notch-style" shapes like hearts, and a prank called "Battery Troll" that shows a random battery level.
The mechanism is simple: it requests accessibility and overlay permissions and draws its own status bar on top of the system one, without root. The entire category works this way. Only Android allows this. iPhone status bars can't be modified, and iOS apps in this space are limited to widgets and charging animations. That's the foundation that lets this line take off on Android.
Free, ad-supported, no in-app purchases.
How fast it's growing
| 10-29 | 11-06 | |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 1.28M | 1.42M |
| Score | 2,004 | 2,162 |
Over 8 days it gained 143k installs, averaging about 18k per day (Google Play installs, 11-06). On 11-06, it was on the personalized free charts in 29 countries: #5 in Brazil, #12 in Turkey, #13 in Sweden, #20 in the UK, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland, #35 in Japan, #36 in Germany, and only #84 in the US. Between 11-01 and 11-03, it peaked at #4 in Turkey and #5 in Sweden.
One number looks off: 1.42M installs but only 2,162 ratings, about 1.5 ratings for every 1000 installs. The top player in the same niche, ZAppsolution's version, has 12.7M installs and 479k ratings, about 38 ratings for every 1000 installs. Much of the new install base is users who don't rate, which is typical of paid acquisition and ad network traffic (inferred, not confirmed).
Why a follower can still break out
To be clear about what it isn't: it's not a new category, and it has no differentiation. It launched 4–5 months after the leaders, every feature it has already exists in the leaders, and even the "battery + pet in one app" combo was done by ZAppsolution (July) and SHINK COMPANY (Aug 22) earlier or at the same time.
It broke through because of four things:
The category is still booming. The two leading Emoji Battery Icon Customize apps (ZAppsolution and New Widget Co., names nearly identical) are each still gaining about 400k installs over the past 7 days (Google Play, 11-06). Demand is spilling over, and latecomers can catch some of it.
TikTok has fed the demand for three years. Tutorial videos on adding emoji to the iPhone battery have existed since 2023, with individual videos hitting several million to 12.4M views (@iphonnation, 2025-02). In 2025–2026 the topic shifted to "apps that can actually change the battery icon on Android"; for example, @imparkerburton posted "Do you care which emoji you use?" in February, getting 1.59M views, and an account called @batteryicon posted "Custom Emoji Battery 2026. Download now." in July 31, getting 900k views. This demand wasn't created by any one app; it's the trend itself.
Same keywords for search, and pushing into cheap countries for charts. The titles are packed with Emoji Battery, Status Bar, and Icon, identical to the leaders, to capture store search. The best rankings are in Brazil, Turkey, and Poland, countries with cheap acquisition and low chart thresholds, and once it charts, the chart itself drives more traffic.
It most likely bought traffic. This category spends heavily on TikTok, Meta, and Google. TikTok has ad videos tagged with creative version numbers, such as @gpsarea68's "Ubah ikon baterai ponsel Anda dengan aplikasi baterai Emoji (T1id_v1)" with 590k views, and other versions in the same series reached 8.69M. In European TikTok ads, a company called LUTECH ran about 80 ads for emoji battery apps in a single week in late October. Whether it ran ads itself, and how much, can't be determined (not finding evidence doesn't mean it didn't).
It's also worth noting who's behind it: the developer name is a Vietnamese name, but the legal entity is an "agricultural joint stock company" called VINASTAR INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURAL, the contact email is a Gmail under another person's name, the website sits on Firebase's free tier, and the account has only 2 apps. This looks like a common move in Vietnamese utility-app circles: publish under a company account to get around the personal developer account requirement of finding 20 people to closed-test for 14 days. Behind it is most likely an experienced small studio, not a newcomer (inferred).
Where the money comes from
It runs on ads. The most useful English review on the store page (Layla Holder, Sep 17,27, marked helpful by people) puts it bluntly: "Just tap apply or an arrow and an ad pops up... at least the ad doesn't ask me for money, haha." Turkish store reviewers also give it 3 stars, complaining about constant ads and permission requests.
Apps like this stay on screen all the time and get opened often, which makes them well suited to repeated interstitials. It gets into the top 20 in the UK, Australia, Sweden, and the Netherlands, countries where ad rates are high, and that is probably the main source of revenue (inferred). Revenue isn't public, and actual active users can't be seen.
Who it's competing with
Everyone. There are over 60 Android apps with names including emoji battery, status bar, or on-screen pet, most from developers in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, with most launching in 2026:
| Product | Developer | Launched | Installs | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize | New Widget Co. | 2026-04 | 15.6M | +376k |
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize | ZAppsolution | 2026-03 | 12.7M | +404k |
| Emoji Battery: Status Bar | HoangSi | 2026-06 | 3.9M | +23k |
| Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets | ZAppsolution | 2026-07 | 3.56M | +266k |
| Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets | SHINK COMPANY | 2026-08 | 2.04M | +99k |
| Emoji Battery: Status Bar Icon (this article) | TRUNGHIEUCOM | 2026-08 | 1.42M | +143k |
| Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar | ImoDevel | 2026-08 | 830k | +110k |
| Battery Emoji Buddies | STARVIA | 2026-09 | 780k | +188k |
(Google Play installs, 11-06)
On every metric it's a follower: launched four to five months after the leader, with about a tenth of its volume. And behind it there are more: in September, STARVIA and Lutech; in October, Growly, 368 Phuc Minh, and OMG! Bros, with new listings nearly every month. STARVIA's version launched a month after this one and is gaining faster than it over the past 7 days, and its ads can be seen running on European TikTok.
The on-screen pet line also has an older ancestor, Shimeji (launched 2016, 33.6M installs). Samsung's Good Lock, and themes from Xiaomi and OPPO, can also change the status bar, but none have this cute style.
To outsiders the category looks like something "few people know about": no media coverage, no X discussion in 30 days, and no one publicly reporting revenue. But for the studios in Vietnam and Southeast Asia that build utility apps, it's already a red ocean that everyone is paving.
If it were you
One-liner: Cloning a same-name version isn't worth much. What's worth learning from this line is the playbook, not the product.
Who it's for: small tool-app studios that already run a "reskin + keywords + paid UA + climb small-country charts" workflow, have several dev accounts, and can calculate ad payback. For you, this is just another skin to queue.
Who it's not for: first-time Android app makers, anyone who hasn't run paid acquisition, or indie devs hoping for organic traffic. You'd be competing with dozens of Vietnamese studios for the same search terms, the same creatives, and the same cheap countries, and they're faster, cheaper, and have more accounts than you.
How to do it: If you must enter, don't make the 61th "Emoji Battery". There are two viable directions. First, change audience and language: Japan and Korea both ranked 20 and below this time, so build storefronts with local aesthetics (Japanese character styles, Korean sticker culture) and local language. Second, fix what the leaders got wrong: the most common complaint in reviews is "tapping anything pops an ad." An ad-light, or even one-time-purchase ad-free, version could separate you from rivals whose ratings are padded at 4.5 stars (inference; this path has a low revenue ceiling). Technically there's no real barrier: accessibility + overlay, one person can ship it in a few weeks.
How to acquire users: the creative is a vertical short video of "the tiny emoji on top of the phone changes expression," understandable within three to five seconds. Test creatives first with small budgets in cheap countries like Brazil and Turkey, push for personalized-chart placement, then check whether high-CPM countries like the UK and Australia pay back.
When to get in: the leader is still growing 400k per week, so demand hasn't faded. But new accounts keep entering every month. If you want in, you need to launch and start buying traffic before year-end. Entering after next spring will likely mean scraps.
Signs you've misread it: ① Google Play tightens accessibility permissions and this batch of apps gets pulled or forced to change permissions in bulk. That's the biggest risk for the whole line, and a single account may only last a few months. ② The leaders' last 7 days of daily growth fall below 100k in December, meaning the trend is fading. ③ Conversely, if late entrants like STARVIA keep adding hundreds of thousands a month, paid acquisition still pencils out, and teams with a working process can launch another skin.

Emoji Battery: Status Bar Icon (TRUNGHIEUCOM): why it could run
Google Play package com.emoji.battery.icon.status.bar, in Personalization, listed 2026-08-14, contains ads, no in-app purchases. Today is 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
It didn't open a new category. It's a Vietnamese tool-app factory shipping yet another copycat version of a verified, booming niche (Android "emoji battery / status bar stickers / screen pets"). The features are essentially the leaders' features stitched together (emoji battery, animated stickers, Shimeji-style screen pets, notch styles, "battery prank"). It reached #5 on Brazil's personalized free chart and charted in 29 countries, riding category demand, store search, and probably bought traffic (unconfirmed). There's almost no differentiation. It didn't run on differentiation; it ran on timely follow-up + volume.
1. Data (source: our googleplay database, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Cumulative installs: 1,277,034(10-29) → 1,419,717(11-06), +142,683 in 8 days, averaging about 18k a day. Passed 1M in under 3 months after launch (store page shows "1M+").
- Ratings: 2,004 → 2,162,8 over 158 days; only about 1.1 ratings for every 1000 installs. Same-niche comparison: ZAppsolution's Emoji Battery Icon Customize 478,798 / 12.7M ≈ 3.8%; New Widget Co. 79,758 / 15.6M ≈ 0.5%; this one is about 0.15%. The rating rate is abnormally low, which suggests a large share of new installs come from users who don't rate (a typical sign of paid acquisition or ad-network traffic, but unconfirmed).
- Charts: each day it sat on personalized free charts in 28–29 countries. 11-06: Brazil 5, Turkey 12, Sweden 13, the UK / Australia / Italy / Netherlands / Poland all 20, South Korea 22, Japan 35, Germany 36; the US only 84. 11-01 to 11-03: Turkey peaked at #4, Sweden at #5.
- Reviews: every review captured was from the Turkish storefront (mostly 5 stars, short comments like "çok iyi"). Top English reviews on the store page include "every tap on apply or the arrow pops an ad" (Layla Holder, Sep, 17,27 people found it helpful), plus a promotional-looking five-star review full of emoji (Mayank Singh, Sep 6). Some Turkish users complain about "constant ads and permission requests" (3 stars).
- Store page: 4.5,2.18K reviews; contains ads; no in-app purchases; the data safety section says location, in-app activity, and other data are shared with third parties (a common disclosure for ad SDKs).
- Implementation: uses accessibility service + overlay permission to draw its own status bar over the system one (as its own description says). No root needed. The whole category works this way.
2. Who the developer is
- Developer name TRUNGHIEUCOM (Vietnamese name "Trung Hiếu"), but the legal entity is VINASTAR INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURAL JOINT STOCK COMPANY (a Vietnamese "agricultural joint stock company"). The contact email is a Gmail under another person's name (hoangminhtuananh663@…), and the website is a free Firebase hosting page, trunghieucomweb.web.app. Source: googleplay library, app table.
- The account has only 2 apps (the other is Mood Bloom, very small volume). AppBrain shows the developer only became active 2026 years ago.
- Reading: a company entity unrelated to the app business plus a personal email is a common pattern in the Vietnamese tool-app scene, "listing under a corporate developer account" (organization accounts skip the personal-account requirement of 20 testers for 14 days for new apps). This is a new or borrowed account, probably run by an experienced small studio, not a beginner. Unverified.
3. Competitors: this niche is packed
The googleplay library has 60+ apps with emoji battery / status bar / screen pet in the name, mostly from Vietnamese and Southeast Asian developers, and most launched in the last 2026 year. The main ones:
| Product | Developer | Launched | Installs | past 7 days | How it compares |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize(com.tstudio.emojibatteryicon) | ZAppsolution | 2026-03-25 | 12.7M | +404k | Category leader, 479k ratings, #1 on Spain's personalized chart; a late entrant |
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize(com.cute.emoji.battery…) | New Widget Co. | 2026-04-22 | 15.6M | +376k | Same name, same features, most installs |
| Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets | ZAppsolution | 2026-07-17 | 3.56M | +266k | The leader packaged "battery + pet" into a second app |
| Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pet / Emoji Battery Widget & Icons | Tools for Everyday - AI Tasks | 2026-06 | 3.39M / 2.89M | +105k / +82k | Same company running two accounts for volume |
| Emoji Battery: Status Bar | HoangSi | 2026-06-09 | 3.9M | +23k | Same name, now slowing |
| Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets | SHINK COMPANY | 2026-08-22 | 2.04M | +99k | Launched around the same time, nearly identical features |
| Battery Emoji Buddies | STARVIA | 2026-09-10 | 780k | +188k | Later launch, faster growth; running TikTok ads in Europe (see below) |
| Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar | ImoDevel | 2026-08-10 | 830k | +110k | Same period, charted in 29 countries |
| Anime Shimeji Screen Pets | Genadijs Ecom Holdings | 2026-01-08 | 2.33M | +19k | Single screen-pet product, #3 on Brazil's chart |
| Shimeji: Play with Screen Pets | Digital Cosmos | 2016-12 | 33.6M | +29k | The screen-pet ancestor |
| Super Status Bar | Tom Bayley | 2020-03 | 5.18M | None | Veteran status-bar customization, practical rather than cutesy |
| dynamicSpot | Jawomo | 2022-09 | 14.7M | +37k | Dynamic Island direction, overlaps with the "notch styles" feature |
| Assorted "charging animation" apps | Firehawk, Niam, etc. | 2021–2023 | 500–30M | — | Same users, same demand for "battery makeovers" |
- On iOS: the system doesn't let apps change the status bar, so you can only build widgets / charging animations. The biggest in the appstore library is Hypernova's Emoji Battery Charging (2026-09-09,5,698 ratings, #1 in the category chart). So actually replacing the battery icon in the status bar is an Android-only play, which is the foundation that lets this Android line boom.
- Big companies: Samsung Good Lock (QuickStar) and MIUI / ColorOS themes can change the status bar, but there are no emoji / sticker / pet cute styles. Since iOS 18 you can customize icon colors, but not the battery style.
- Open source: a few status-bar customization projects exist, very small scale, not real competition.
Bottom line: it's a follower on every dimension: it launched 4–5 months after the leaders, its installs are about a tenth of theirs, and its last 7 days of growth rank around fifth in the category.
4. Where users come from
- The demand itself comes from a long-running TikTok trend (confirmed): TikHub search for "emoji battery" shows iPhone emoji battery tutorials since 2023 with millions to tens of millions of views (@greenwaremobile 2023-03 8.45M views, @iphonnation 2025-02 12.4M views), and from 2025–2026 it moved to Android "battery icon apps." That's the category's demand base, not something it created.
- The category is running heavy paid acquisition on TikTok and Meta (confirmed as a category pattern, not as an individual app's activity): On TikTok, @gpsarea68's "Change your phone battery icon with Emoji battery app (T3en_v10)" videos carry creative version numbers, clearly ad creatives, with 5.94M to 8.69M views per video; @batteryicon has 2026-07-31 with 9.01M views and "Download now." In our TikTok ad library (Europe only), LUTECH SOFTWARE has run about 80 ads for emoji battery apps (10-29 to 11-04), 4 of which link directly to STARVIA's Battery Emoji Buddies. In the Google ad library, HYPERNOVA LIMITED is running ads for emoji battery and Shimeji. On Facebook there is also a Spanish-language promo video saying "try this trend" (Page 61593356556704). TRUNGHIEUCOM is not on the three ad libraries we track, so our search coming up empty doesn't mean it isn't advertising.
- Store search + category charts (confirmed): titles are stuffed with the keywords "Emoji Battery," "Status Bar," and "Icon," matching the leaders' terms. After entering personalized free charts in 29 countries, the charts themselves drive more volume. Google search results show similar app pages with
utm_term=emoji battery…organic search parameters, which confirms these are the search terms. - Markets chosen for low CPI and high chart positions (inferred): its best ranks are in Brazil, Turkey, Sweden, the Netherlands and Poland; the US only reached #84. Brazil and Turkey have cheap paid acquisition and low bars for personalized charts. Install counts jump in steps (59k, 50k, 19k), which may reflect how Play aggregates data, so they can't be used as proof of paid acquisition.
- Incentivized reviews (possible): the rating rate is extremely low but the average is 4.5, and the Turkish store reviews are almost all 5-star short comments, while the store page has long reviews that read like promotional copy. A rating prompt may be triggering them, unverified.
Where the money comes from: ads only (interstitials pop up on every action, and many reviews complain about them), with no in-app purchases. Accessibility permission plus an always-on overlay drives high open rates and session time, making repeated ad impressions easy. High-eCPM countries like the UK, Australia, Sweden and the Netherlands get it into the top 20, and that is likely the main source of its revenue (inferred).
5. Differentiation
- Feature list: emoji battery, status bar icon size and color, up to 5 animated stickers, on-screen pet, notch styles (including a heart), and a "battery troll" that shows a random charge level. Every one of these is already in the leading products. The only thing that counts as a combination is putting battery, stickers, pet and notch all in one app, but ZAppsolution's Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets (July) and SHINK's Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets (August) already do exactly that.
- So differentiation is not why it took off. The real reasons: the category is still growing (the leader adds 400k a week), Play is lenient toward look-alike apps, and a Vietnamese studio's proven playbook of "reskin + keywords + paid acquisition + push small-country charts."
6. How many people have seen it
- No media coverage. On X (x-radar, 30 days), "emoji battery" returns zero posts. The only results are auto-generated pages on AppBrain, Similarweb and Uptodown. Revenue is not public.
- But the category itself is no secret: 60 apps with the same name, and new ones launched every month (September: STARVIA, Lutech, randa; October: Growly, 368 Phuc Minh, OMG! Bros). The Vietnamese utility app scene clearly knows this lane. To outsiders it's "little known"; to utility-app builders it's already a red ocean.
7. What others can borrow
- Android-only personalization (changing the status bar, on-screen pets) runs on accessibility plus overlay permissions, and a small team can ship it in a few weeks.
- The cute iPhone customization trend on TikTok can be carried over to Android by an app that actually lets users change things.
- Playbook: copy the leader with same-name, same-keyword releases within 4–5 months, go after Brazil and Turkey first (cheap, low chart bars), recoup through ad revenue from high-eCPM countries, and run several accounts at once.
- Risks: Google Play is tightening review of accessibility permissions, so these apps can be ordered delisted or forced to change permissions at any time. The category is heavily copied, and a single account may only last a few months.
8. Still unclear
- Whether it runs paid acquisition and how much: none of the three ad libraries track it. Unverified.
- Revenue: no in-app purchases, and ad income isn't visible. You also can't see how many installs are real active users (the low rating rate is a red flag).
- Who is behind it: whether VINASTAR's legal entity and TRUNGHIEUCOM are related, and whether this is a front account used by a larger studio, is unverified.
- How long this category can stay hot: the leader is still adding 400k a week, but new apps keep coming, and the increment for a later entrant is now an order of magnitude below the leader's.
