55K installs, 0 ratings: a Vietnamese studio's sixth "AI English tutor"
What it is An AI English-learning app: AI scenario conversations, listening, dictionary, grammar cards. Free with ads, with a subscription sold on top.
Why it took off The same Vietnamese studio template had already produced Lurnia at over 750K in a week, so they renamed it, used a new account, and put the budget into countries with low chart bars like Italy and Poland. A few thousand installs a day pushed it to #2 in the Education chart.
CWhat you could do: Don't build an English tutor, learn the matrix-testing playbook: same AI chat shell, 2–3 names, pick uncrowded niches (a specific exam, minor languages, job-specific speaking) and low-barrier countries, spend small on paid installs to chase category charts, then scale whatever holds.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-29 · 11-07 installs 55,641
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
In Nov 2, an English app that had been live for just five weeks and was still on version 0.2.0 suddenly showed up on Google Play charts in 14 countries, peaking at #2 in Italy's education free chart. It's called Eruden. By Nov 5 it had 55k installs total and zero ratings. The product didn't drive this. The studio behind it, in Ho Chi Minh City, has already shipped at least six nearly identical apps in this category. Eruden is the newest, and it's being tested with real money. This piece explains how the playbook works and why indie devs can learn from it but shouldn't copy it.
How an app nobody's talking about hit #2 in Italy
First, how installs grew (October figures are third-party estimates; from 10-29 on they're public Google Play install counts):
| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 10-06 | 8 |
| 10-13 | 199 |
| 10-19 | 1,208 |
| 10-26 | 5,026 |
| 10-31 | 12,434 |
| 11-03 | 35,635 |
| 11-05 | 55,641 |
Mid-October it added a hundred or two hundred a day. Early November it was adding seven or eight thousand to ten thousand a day, up 50k in one week. The curve didn't steepen gradually. It jumped in steps, like someone raising the budget one notch at a time.
The charts look the same. From 10-29 to 11-01 it sat between #83 and #121 on Canada's education chart. Then in 11-02 it appeared across 14 storefronts at once: Italy, Poland, Spain, Nigeria, the Philippines, the US, UK, France, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Argentina. Italy's education free chart peaked at #2, and its best overall ranking was #48 (11-03 to 11-04). By 11-06 it had slipped to #6 on Italy's education chart and #127 overall.
Put the two sets of numbers together: a global daily add of a few thousand to ten thousand was enough to reach #2 in Italy's education chart. That means the Italian chart's bar is low, and the money was concentrated in Italy.
You can't find it on social media. Searching "Eruden" on TikTok returns no related videos. On X there were 30 posts in the past 0 days, and no media outlet has written about it. The only trace is a page on auto-aggregator sites like AppBrain. 55k people installed it and not one rated it. Organically growing apps don't look like this. Bought traffic does.
What it is: a template
The store listing and website (astronex.ai/eruden, launched Sep 17) are blunt: "Listen · Chat · Look up · Learn." It has four features:
- Listening room: short audio for scenarios like the airport, the doctor, or a meeting.
- AI chat: role-play across 15 everyday scenarios, by typing or speaking.
- Dictionary: definitions, phonetics, pronunciation, example sentences.
- Grammar cards: A1 to C1, one rule per card.
Plus a translation box. The pitch is "No onboarding quiz, no streak guilt": no intake test, no streak anxiety, a few minutes at a time. The interface supports a dozen-plus languages including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian and Filipino.
Anyone can build these features. Eruden is nearly identical to the same studio's LexiUp and Elyra, just with different names and icons.
Who's behind it: a Ho Chi Minh City app portfolio
The developer on Play is DooMoon. The privacy policy is signed DooMoon Care Joint Stock Company, and the contact email is [email protected], with "aso" in the address. The account has 6 apps with about 1.07M installs in total. The two biggest are the AI video apps DreamShot (566k) and InFlux (350k). The English apps are LexiUp and Eruden.
Eruden's website isn't under DooMoon. It's on astronex.ai. The site is signed ASTRONEX JOINT STOCK COMPANY, with an address on floor 9 of the Saigon Paragon building in Ho Chi Minh City and a phone number starting +84. The homepage lists Eruden, EngJoy, LexiUp, Elyra, Lingozu, Pivo AI, InFlux, Kova and Lura AI, spread across at least 5 developer accounts: DooMoon, Astronex, Astronex AI, ApeHero and SPN Studio.
Just in AI English tutors, this one company has:
| App | Developer account | Launched | Total installs / last 7 days (Google Play, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lurnia AI Language Tutor | Astronex | 2026-06 | 3.28M / +750k |
| Elyra: AI English Coach | Astronex AI | 2026-06 | 1.78M / +96k |
| LexiUp | DooMoon | 2026-08 | 84k / +19k |
| Lingozu | ApeHero | 2026-08 | 53k |
| EngJoy | (same company) | 2026 | Not tracked |
| Eruden | DooMoon | 2026-09 | 56k / +51k |
Lurnia grew 750k in a week, which shows the template can work. The studio's method: change the name, change the account, ship the same thing again, and keep funding whichever one runs. Eruden is the one currently under test.
Where users come from: paid acquisition, concentrated in low-barrier countries
There's no direct evidence of which ad platforms Eruden itself is buying on. Indirect signals:
- Its Facebook page has 0 followers and 0 reviews, lists "Los Angeles" as its location, and its only link goes straight to the Play download page. It's a shell page built for running ads.
- Lurnia from the same company runs on Meta under 4 pages at once: Lurnia's own page is running 184 ads, and it also borrows the pages of AI song-writing and photo-crop apps, with No Crop running 220 ads. This is the old trick of rotating several pages through ads pointing at one download link.
- Eruden is only on Google Play and is mainly pushed in countries like Italy and Poland. That looks more like Google's app-promotion ads (inferred, not verified).
The other two levers are supporting. One is store search: the package name is learnlanguage, the title is AI English Learning, and the keyword field is packed. The other is chart climbing: once it reached #2 on the education chart, the chart itself brought in some organic downloads.
Where the money comes from: ads as a floor, subscriptions as the ceiling
The store listing says "Contains ads," and in-app prices run from $9.99 to $99.99, in line with the usual weekly and annual subscriptions plus a lifetime one-time purchase. Free users see ads and a few people buy subscriptions. It has never appeared on a top-grossing chart, so its revenue is invisible from the outside. This kind of studio's math: if ad revenue plus subscriptions can cover acquisition cost, keep scaling; if not, stop and move on to the next skin. 0.2.0 versions and 0 ratings suggest Eruden is still running those numbers.
Who it's competing with: the whole category is packed
11-06 of the top 40 apps on Italy's education free chart are AI language tutors. Besides this company's own apps, there are others:
- Big-spend buyer: Learna AI from Turkey's Codeway, 54.4M installs, +7k in the last 510 days.
- Similar apps that appeared within the past 2026 year: Langla (9.53M, +820k in a week) and Fluzy (10.4M), plus SayDuo, Engla, Linguza, TutorMe and LunaSpeak, from studios in Vietnam, India and South Korea, each with 1M to 10M installs.
- Serious funded products: Loora, Praktika, Speak and ELSA, with 10M to 40M installs, offering speech assessment and AI tutors with avatars.
- Duolingo: 990M installs, plus its Max tier with video calls.
- Free substitutes: ChatGPT and Gemini voice chat, which already works for speaking practice.
Eruden has no differentiation in this crowd. It made the charts because its studio has money, templates and accounts.
What you can learn
- One template, many accounts, test by skinning. Test several names at once on a small budget. Scale the ones that run (like Lurnia) and drop the ones that don't. If one account gets flagged, the others are unaffected.
- Chase category charts in low-barrier countries. In Italy's education chart, a few thousand daily installs can land you top three. Pick small-language countries and niche categories, and buy "top of the chart" visibility for very little money.
- Ads as the floor. Don't count on most users paying. Let ad revenue cover part of acquisition cost first, and treat subscriptions as upside.
What we don't know yet
- There is no direct evidence of which ad platforms Eruden buys on, how much it spends, or how the spend splits across countries.
- Retention and paid conversion are completely invisible. 0 ratings could mean the rating prompt isn't shown yet, or that the bought users are low quality.
- 11-06 has already dropped from #2 to #6 in Italy. Whether it scales up or stops depends on the data from late November.
If it were you
C. You can learn the tactics, but copying them isn't worth it. AI English tutors are one of the most crowded new-app spaces on Google Play, and Eruden is just the sixth skin from one Vietnamese studio. It runs on cash flow, ready-made templates and a stack of developer accounts, none of which indie devs have.
Who it suits: small teams already running paid installs on one or two apps, with a ready AI chat template and ad monetization in place. They can follow the same method, swap their template into an obscure category and obscure country, and test it. It doesn't have to be English.
Not for: anyone who hasn't run Google or Meta app ads. There's no technical moat and no organic traffic here, so without paid acquisition it's 0. Also skip it if you're hoping to build a better AI English tutor and grow on word of mouth: there are dozens of similar apps, with Duolingo and ChatGPT sitting above them.
How to do it: If you're going to learn from this, learn matrix testing, not "English tutor." Pick a category that isn't crowded yet, such as prep for one specific exam, a minor language, or speaking practice for one profession. Build 2 to 3 names on the same AI chat shell. Spend a small budget on each for a week in one or two low-barrier countries, and track the cost per install and the first 7 days of ad revenue.
How to acquire users: Google app-promotion ads, or Meta ads that point straight at the download link. Concentrate on countries where the category chart is easy to climb, get into the top five of the category, then ride the organic installs that come from the chart. Pack the store title and package name with keywords.
When to do it by: There's no hard deadline. New skins enter this category every month, and the later you test, the more each install costs.
Signs you've misread it: (1) If Eruden's daily adds fall back to a few hundred in late November and its Italy rank drops out of the top 50, the round didn't pay back, which means even a studio with templates and experience can't make the numbers work. (2) Conversely, if it holds ten thousand-plus daily adds for over a month and starts appearing on top-grossing charts, English tutors can still make money through paid acquisition in low-barrier countries, and the category is wider than it looks. (3) If Google Play starts mass-removing near-identical apps published by one company under multiple accounts, the matrix approach gets narrower.

Eruden: AI English Learning (com.eruden.learnlanguage), why it showed up
Bottom line
Eruden didn't break out on its own merits. It's another "AI English tutor" shell from Astronex, a Vietnamese app studio, published through multiple developer accounts (this one is DooMoon). It runs one template: AI scenario chat, listening, dictionary, grammar cards. Installs were bought in stages, targeting education charts in low-bar countries like Italy and Poland. 55,641 installs and 0 ratings is the classic paid-acquisition pattern. What's worth studying is the portfolio playbook, not this app.
Data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06; earlier figures are AppstoreSpy estimates)
- Store launch 2026-09-29 (app table); AppstoreSpy observations start 09-22, so the real launch was probably earlier, and the store launch date may have been reset.
- Cumulative installs (AppstoreSpy estimates + our library): 10-06 had 8 → 10-13 had 199 → 10-19 had 1,208 → 10-26 had 5,026 → 10-31 had 12,434 → 11-03 had 35,635 → 11-05 had 55,641. Over the last 7 days, +50,611, with daily adds rising from about 100–400 in mid-October to about 7,700–10,000 in early November (the ipd field in app_day_ext). That stepped acceleration is what budget being increased tier by tier looks like.
- Ratings: from 10-29 to 11-06, every day shows ratings = NULL, meaning 55k installs and zero ratings; the library has no reviews either. The version stayed at 0.2.0. The store marks it as containing ads, with in-app purchases at $9.99–$99.99.
- Charts (chart_rank):
- From 10-29 to 11-01 it only ranked #83–121 in Canada's education chart.
- 11-02 charted in 14 stores at once: Italy Education Top Free #2, overall chart #73; Poland Education chart #26; Spain 83; Nigeria 67; Philippines 97; plus the US, UK, France, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Argentina.
- From 11-03 to 11-04 it held #2 in Italy's education chart, with a best overall rank of #48; #10 in Poland.
- On 11-06 it slipped to #6 in Italy's education chart and #127 overall, with other countries at #24–189.
- Only a few thousand to ten thousand new installs a day worldwide, yet it reached #2 in Italy's education chart. That shows Italy's bar is low and the spend is clearly skewed toward Italy.
Competitors
"AI English / language tutor" is one of the most crowded new-release niches on Google Play. 11-06 In the Italy Education Top Free chart's top 40, about ten are AI language tutor apps (googleplay library, v_chart):
| Product | Developer | Launched | Scale (total installs / last 7 days) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duolingo | Duolingo | 2013 | 990M / +3.79M |
| Learna AI | Codeway (Turkish acquisition shop) | 2024-09 | 54.4M / +510k |
| Langla: Tutor IA | Aquaworld Infotech | 2026-04 | 9.53M / +820k |
| Fluzy | Mall Collections | 2026-03 | 10.4M / +380k |
| Lurnia AI Language Tutor | Astronex (same company) | 2026-06 | 3.28M / +750k |
| Elyra: AI English Coach | Astronex AI (same company) | 2026-06 | 1.78M / +96k |
| LexiUp: AI English Learning | DooMoon (same company) | 2026-08 | 84k / +19k |
| Lingozu | ApeHero (same company, website astronex.ai) | 2026-08 | 53k |

| Loora / Praktika / Speak / ELSA | Funded companies | 2019–2024 | 10M–40M |
Big-company products count as competitors too: ChatGPT and Gemini voice chat can be used directly for speaking practice, and Duolingo Max has Video Call.
Who's behind it
- Play developer "DooMoon", website doomooncare.com, privacy policy signed by DooMoon Care Joint Stock Company, contact email [email protected] (the email name itself includes ASO). The library shows 6 apps under this account, 1.07M installs combined: AI video apps DreamShot (566k) and InFlux (350k), plus Siven and Revion, and English apps LexiUp and Eruden.
- Eruden's official landing page is at astronex.ai/eruden/. The astronex.ai homepage lists Eruden, EngJoy, LexiUp, Elyra, Lingozu, Pivo AI, InFlux, Kova, Lura AI, and Quin AI, and these apps are spread across at least 5 developer accounts: DooMoon, Astronex, Astronex AI, ApeHero, and SPN Studio. Pivo's store link carries hl=vi, and Astronex's Artvilize sits on Vietnam's photography chart, so this is likely a Vietnamese studio.
- The same studio put at least 6 apps in this same category: Lurnia, Elyra, LexiUp, Eruden, EngJoy, and Lingozu. Eruden is the newest one.
Where users come from
- Paid acquisition (high confidence, but I haven't obtained Eruden's own ad creatives)
- The install curve comes in steps; 55k installs, 0 ratings; no organic discussion anywhere on social media (TikTok search for "Eruden" returns no relevant videos, and the X corpus has 30 posts over the last 0 days).
- Its Facebook page has only 0 followers and 0 reviews, links straight to the Play package, and lists "Los Angeles" as its location. It's a shell page meant for running ads.
- The same studio's Lurnia runs on Meta through 4 Pages in the Meta ad library (metaads library): the Lurnia page has 184 ads running, and it also borrows the Melix: AI Song Maker, No Crop (220 ads running), and TeraBot pages. This is rotating multiple pages to push Play links. Eruden's own page, pulled through Jina from the Meta ad library, shows "0 ads running right now," but this kind of logged-out scraping often returns unreliable numbers, so it's unverified and not usable as evidence.
- Neither our googleads nor tiktokads lists contain DooMoon or Astronex. Play-only, targeting countries like Italy and Poland, it looks more like Google App Campaigns (UAC), but that's unverified.
- Store search / ASO (medium): the package name and title are packed with keywords (learnlanguage, AI English Learning), and the developer email also starts with aso. Once it reached #2 in Italy's education chart, chart exposure brought in some organic installs.
- Portfolio reuse (high): the same feature set (AI scenario chat + listening + dictionary + grammar + translation), reskinned with a new name on a new account. Whichever one works (Lurnia gained +750k in a week, for example) gets more budget.
Where the money comes back
The store marks it as containing ads, so free users are monetized through ads (whether it's AdMob or something else is unverified). There are also subscriptions or in-app purchases, and the $9.99–$99.99 price range fits the common "weekly + annual / lifetime" structure. The library shows it never hit a top-grossing chart, so revenue isn't visible. This type of studio runs on ads plus a small amount of subscriptions: keep scaling spend as long as it covers acquisition costs. V0.2.0 and 0 ratings suggest it's still in the test-to-break-even phase.
Differentiation
Almost none. The pitch on the website: no entry-level quiz, no streak anxiety, five-minute sessions, UI in your native language. Functionally it's nearly identical to its sister apps LexiUp and Elyra. It got traction not through differentiation but through "studio portfolio plus paid acquisition in low-bar countries."
Visibility
Almost nobody knows about it yet: revenue isn't public, there's no press coverage, X has 0 posts, and TikTok returns nothing. It has only appeared on aggregator pages like CNET downloads and AppBrain. But the category itself is already packed: the top 40 of Italy's education chart includes a dozen or so similar apps.
What to borrow
- One studio runs multiple developer accounts across several categories at once: test reskinned copies of the same template on low budgets, then add budget to whichever works (Lurnia is the one that worked; Eruden is being tested now).
- Target countries with low chart thresholds to climb category charts (a few thousand daily installs can get you into the top 3 of Italy's education chart), then use chart exposure to pull in some organic installs.
- Use ad monetization as the floor and subscriptions as the upside.
Still unclear
- There's no direct evidence on where Eruden's own ads run (Google UAC or other Meta pages), how they're split by country, or how much was spent.
- Retention and paid conversion are completely invisible: 0 ratings could mean the rating prompt isn't set up yet, or that user quality is low.
- 11-06's ranking has dropped from #2 to #6. Whether spend keeps growing or stops depends on the data from mid-to-late November.
