# With 830 installs it hit #12 on India's books chart: how a sock-puppet novel app hit 50K in four days

**What it is** An English web-novel reading app covering werewolf, mafia, CEO romance and revenge stories. Contains ads, with in-app purchases for chapters.

**Why it took off** Users didn't find it on their own. A Vietnamese team launched it using a ready-made template and a corporate shell, and ran about 50K installs of paid acquisition between 10-31 and 11-03, just enough to push it into the top 10 of India's low-barrier Books free chart.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another template novel app. The only part worth taking is the move: find a low-barrier country category chart, spend a few days on concentrated paid acquisition to break in for visibility, hold off on monetization during the push, then check retention. Apply it to a product whose retention already holds up.

Grade C: the product has no differentiation. The same template is already run by several sock puppets chasing the same chart, the content has no visible source, and whether it can earn back its spend can't be seen. What you can learn is that India's category charts have a low barrier. Copying the rest isn't worth it, and it carries the risk of mass account bans. Few people know about it yet

Novels: Read Fiction Stories is an English web-novel reading app on Google Play. It launched in Oct 16 and reached 50K installs in under three weeks, squeezing into the top 10 of India's "Books & Reference" free chart. It has nothing new on the product side: the same template, a dormant UK company shell, four days of concentrated paid acquisition, and monetization turned on only after the push. This piece covers how it appeared, who is behind it, what's worth noting, and why we don't recommend copying it.

### Oct 29, #12 on India's Books chart

In Oct 29, the app had only 830 total installs worldwide, adding about a thousand a day, and was already #12 on India's Google Play "Books & Reference" free chart (third-party install estimates; chart 10-29).

The top 10 on this chart usually looks like this: Wikipedia, Kindle, a few Bibles, a few calendars. The only novel app is India's homegrown Pratilipi, at #6 (11-06). These are all established big apps with modest daily installs, so a new app adding a thousand a day can squeeze into the top 15, and adding tens of thousands a day can reach the top 10.

Over the next four days, that's exactly what it did:

| Date | Cumulative worldwide installs (est.) | Approximate daily new installs |
|---|---|---|
| 10-16 | 7 | Launched |
| 10-26 | 830 | About 250 |
| 10-31 | 5,897 | About 5,000 |
| 11-02 | 38,720 | About 33K over two days |
| 11-03 | 50,665 | About 12k |
| 11-04 – 11-06 | 52,618 | About 2,000 over three days combined |

On Nov 2 it peaked at #6 on this India chart, and its store page showed the badge "#10 top free books & reference" (India Google Play page, 11-06). Then the spending stopped, and daily installs fell from over ten thousand back to six or seven hundred. The remaining few hundred are most likely organic traffic from the chart and search (inferred).

### What it is

Open the store page and the title is the search term itself: "Novels: Read Fiction Stories". The first paragraph of the description is a string of genre tags: romance, drama, fantasy, revenge, werewolf, mafia, followed by "from love triangles and forbidden love to enemies to lovers and billionaire romance." Werewolf, mafia, CEO romance, revenge: these are the genres that sell best for English web novels going global.

The features are standard for a web-novel reader: "Trending Now," "Weekly Picks" and "Editor's Picks" sections, a bookshelf, resume reading, chapter skipping, adjustable font size and brightness, three themes (day, parchment, night), page-turn modes and a focus mode. Monetization is listed as "Contains ads" and "Contains in-app purchases" at $3.99 to $17.99 per item. Following the usual pattern for these apps, that likely means buying coins to unlock chapters (inferred).

Two details stand out: in-app purchases only appear from Nov 6, so monetization was off during the push. The version number is stuck at 0.0.4.16.10.26, and the store page's update date is Oct 28, with no updates since the push.

Rating: 3.3 stars from 40 reviews (11-06). The top two reviews are one from Oct 31 in Bengali script that reads only "❤️❤️❤️," and one from Nov 1 saying "best app." Both land right in the push window.

### Who's behind it: a dormant UK company and a Vietnamese phone number

The developer info on the store page lists the legal entity as AAHARUSH TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED, with an address in Altrincham near Manchester, UK. The contact phone number starts with +84 (Vietnam), and the support email is a random string of letters and digits at gmail.

Checking Companies House, the UK company registry: the company was incorporated in March 2022, with a single director, an Indian national living in the UK. Its filings for 2023, 2024 and 2025 are all dormant company accounts, meaning no trading. The name shown on the store, "AADHYA TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED," matches another UK company incorporated in 2013, so the two don't reconcile. The website aadhya-tech-limited.github.io is a GitHub Pages site showing 404, and the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites.

This is a common playbook among Vietnamese global publishing teams: buy or rent an already verified company developer account and use it to launch sock-puppet apps (inferred, based on the Vietnamese phone number, the dormant company and the sibling apps below).

The same account also has a short-drama app, Drama TV: Short Drama, Reels, launched in Sep 7 and at 935K installs by Nov 6. Its curve also comes in pulses: it added about 240K in one day in Oct 4, and about 150K in Oct 8 (third-party estimates). In Meta's ad library, the page running ads for Drama TV is one called "Mobile Review Journal S07": 73 likes, categorized as "Health & Wellness Service," with about 360 install video ads running in Nov 5. The same page also ran ads for an AI photo-editing app. A fake name, few followers, and one page promoting several apps is the typical pattern of a paid-acquisition studio.

The novel app itself doesn't appear in the public ad libraries of Meta, Google or TikTok. It may have run through Google's app campaigns, or through a different page, but we haven't verified this. Still, a curve that climbs 50K in 4 days and drops as soon as spending stops is not what word of mouth produces.

### It isn't the first, and it isn't the only one

On the same India chart, two nearly identical apps appeared weeks earlier:

| App | Launched | Installs (11-06, est.) | How they got there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novel Fic - Stories & Novels | 09-24 | 86k | Vietnamese company shell, same playbook: a bare github.io site, a Google Sites privacy page, a random gmail. From 10-12 to 10-15 it pushed about 60K and barely grew afterward. |
| My Novel: Read Stories, Novels | 10-07 | 61k | Another Vietnamese company shell, same template. From 10-21 to 10-26 it pushed about 50K, peaked at #26 on that chart, and has since dropped to #172. |
| Novels: Read Fiction Stories | 10-16 | 53k | This one |

The three apps have different company shells, but the template and rhythm are the same: launch, spend for four or five days, enter India's Books chart, then go quiet. We can't prove they're the same team, but it's the same playbook. Vietnamese sock-puppet short-drama apps have also come in large numbers over the past half year (TV Stories, AuraReel, VioletBinge and others, each from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of installs).

The real novel-reading players operate at a different scale:

| Product | Scale (Google Play cumulative installs, est.) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Wattpad | 346M | Community where users write and read their own stories |
| Fizzo | 85.9M | ByteDance-owned, free to read with ads, large catalog |
| Pratilipi | 54.6M | Indian homegrown original work in multiple languages, #6 on the same chart |
| Dreame | 41.5M | Leader in werewolf and CEO-romance genres, also unlocks chapters with coins |
| GoodNovel | 38.9M | Signed authors, owned rights |
| WebNovel (Qidian International) | 32.3M | Official translations of Chinese web novels |
| MoboReader family (BestNovel, ReadNow, etc.) | 2.7M–9.6M each | Also spreads across many package names, but has its own content library and has operated for years |

These major players all have their own content sources. This app's store page doesn't say where its books come from, whether licensed or taken elsewhere, and there's no way to tell from outside.

Also worth mentioning is Amberia: Novels & Stories (launched 9-17, 41K installs, up about 39K in the last 7 days), which has its own domain and polished copy, and reached #3 in a similar category in Japan. It looks more like a legitimate small novel company, and it isn't the same thing as the three sock-puppet apps above.

### What it actually proves

One thing can be confirmed: **India's Google Play free chart for books has a low barrier** . A thousand installs a day can reach the top 15, and tens of thousands a day can reach the top 10. India's paid acquisition is also among the cheapest in the world, so a single chart push likely costs a few thousand dollars (estimated, unverified).

What it doesn't prove is whether it makes money. After the push, daily installs fell to a few hundred. It has 40 reviews, and the content is hollow. Paid features were only switched on in Nov 6. Reading apps recover their costs through retention and repeat purchases, and from outside there's no way to tell whether a single push can pay back. Novel Fic and My Novel, from the same batch, also haven't recovered after their pushes, which doesn't prove they broke even either.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : you can learn a fact about chart barriers, but it's not worth copying. This is a Vietnamese studio's production line. Whether any one sock puppet makes money depends on the combined books of the whole batch, not on the single product.

**Who it suits** : teams that already have a reading or utility app with decent retention and just need visibility, looking for a cheap cold-start method. Also people already running paid acquisition in India or the Middle East who know how to calculate payback periods.

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie developers who want to build a web-novel reading app. Without a content source (signed authors or licensed rights), you're the fourth copy of a template. Pratilipi, Dreame and GoodNovel have tens of millions of users and their own libraries. It also doesn't suit anyone unwilling to touch sock-puppet accounts: Google Play bans duplicate content and linked accounts in bulk.

**How to do it (if you only take that one move)** :

1. Choose low-barrier "country × category" free charts. India and the UAE's Books categories are examples. First check how many new installs a day the top 20 on the chart is adding, to estimate how much volume you need to get in.

2. Spend for a few days on concentrated paid acquisition to reach the top 10 to 15, and use the exposure from the category chart and the "#N top free" badge. At the same time, track how much organic traffic remains each day after spending stops, and how many people are still using the app 7 days later.

3. During the push, hold off on monetization and don't show too many ads, to protect the rating. Turn monetization on only once the retention numbers hold up.

**How to acquire users** : this move is itself paid acquisition (Google app campaigns or Meta video install ads) plus category-chart exposure, with ASO that puts the search term directly in the title. There is no content channel and no word of mouth.

**When does the window close** : there's no window to speak of. This barrier has been there all along, and Vietnamese studios have been using it all along. If anything, the path narrows when Google Play tightens its rules on sock puppets and developer verification.

**When you'd be wrong** : if in a month or two its daily installs are holding or climbing rather than falling, reviews start mentioning specific books and actual readers talking about them, or it breaks into the Top Grossing chart for books in India or the Middle East, then it isn't just chart-gaming. There's content that keeps people coming back, and it's worth going back to look at where its books come from and how they're priced.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Concentrated paid acquisition (channel unknown)** : 830 to 50k installs in just 4 days; after it stopped, daily installs fell from over 10k to about 650. The app itself shows no ads in the Meta, Google, or TikTok ad libraries (the libraries only track listed products).

- **Confirmed** **Meta paid acquisition by a sister app (supporting evidence of the same playbook)** : Page "Mobile Review Journal S07" has only 73 likes and is running 360 video install ads, landing on Drama TV (metaads, 2026-11-05), from the same developer.

- **Confirmed** **India category chart exposure** : from 10-29 it ranked #6–#12 on the India Books & Reference Top Free chart; at about 1,000 daily installs it reached #12.

- **Confirmed** **Store search ASO** : the title uses generic search terms Novels / Read Fiction Stories, and the description is packed with genre tags like romance, werewolf, mafia, billionaire.

- Inferred **Content, creators, and press** : 30 posts on X in the last 0 days; web search returns only store pages, APK sites, and aggregators.

## Why Novels: Read Fiction Stories (com.fiction.novel.story) got to the top

> Channel: Google Play | Developer display name: AADHYA TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED | Launched 2026-10-16 | Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It didn't get there on its product. This is an English web-novel reader from a Vietnamese overseas "multi-brand" operation: it was published under a leased or bought dormant UK company developer account, using the same template (an empty github.io site + a Google Sites privacy page + a random gmail). Then a few days of concentrated paid acquisition pushed it (about 45k installs from 10-31 to 11-03 over four days) into the top 10 of India's low-barrier "Books & Reference" free chart. Once the buying stopped, daily installs dropped to a few hundred. It has no differentiation; the same people have copied this playbook in bulk several times.

### 1. Data (our googleplay library, with AppstoreSpy filling in history)

| Date | Cumulative global installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10-16 | 7 | Launch (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| 10-23 | 61 | |
| 10-26 | 830 | About 256 daily installs |
| 10-27–10-31 | 830 → 5,897 | About 1,000 daily installs |
| 11-01–11-02 | → 38,720 | About 16k daily installs (averaged over two days) |
| 11-03 | 50,665 | +11,945 |
| 11-04–11-06 | 52,618 | Up only 1,953 over three days, averaging about 650 a day |

- Source: googleplay library `app_day` / `app_day_ext` (AppstoreSpy estimates), checked 2026-11-06.

- Charts: since 10-29 it has consistently ranked #6–#12 on India's Books & Reference free chart (best was #11-02 on 6), #19 at best in the UAE, and ranked #100–#200 in 10 other stores (`chart_rank`). **On 10-29, global cumulative installs were only 830 with about 1,000 daily installs, and it still reached #12 on India's chart that day** , which shows the bar for this chart is very low: a thousand or so daily installs gets you into the top 15.

- Ratings: the store page shows 3.2 stars and 39 reviews (Play India page, 11-06). The visible reviews are "❤️❤️❤️" and "best app" from accounts with Bengali names, with little substance. Our review library has no reviews for it.

- Monetization: the page is labeled "Contains ads" and "Contains in-app purchases." In our snapshots, `offers_iap` flipped from False to True only on 11-06, with IAP priced at $3.99–$17.99 per item. In other words, paid features were turned on only after the installs were bought (most likely coin packs for unlocking chapters). The version has stayed at 0.0.4.16.10.26.

### 2. Who the developer is: a leased UK shell + a Vietnamese team

- The "About the developer" section on Play lists the legal entity as **AAHARUSH TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED** , address 4 Heatherbell Close, West Timperley, Altrincham WA14 5YG (UK), phone **+84 394 085 194 (a Vietnamese number)** , email le6816142@gmail.com (from the Play store page).

- Companies House lookup: AAHARUSH TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED (13996207) was incorporated 2022-03-22, with a sole director, Anantha Sirisha Pulusu (Indian national, based in the UK). **Every year it files dormant company accounts** (2023, 2024, 2025 are all dormant accounts). Source: [find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/1…](https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/13996207/filing-history)

- The display name "AADHYA TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED" matches another real UK company (08514523, Epsom, incorporated 2013), but the legal entity doesn't match.

- The website aadhya-tech-limited.github.io is 404 (an empty GitHub Pages site), and the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites.

- Verdict: this is a common approach among Vietnamese overseas teams. They buy or lease a verified UK or Vietnamese company Play account to publish multi-brand apps. A sister app under the same account, **Drama TV: Short Drama, Reels** (com.dramatv.watch.short.drama.reels, launched 2026-09-07), has already reached 935k installs, and its curve is also a series of spikes: 10-04 single-day +240k, 10-08 +150k (app_day_ext).

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Concentrated paid acquisition (inferred, with strong supporting evidence)** :
    - Curve shape: 830 → 50k took just 4 days, and after it stopped, daily installs dropped straight back to a few hundred. Organic traffic and word of mouth don't grow like this; it's a classic budget-driven spike.
    - Paid acquisition by the sister app is confirmed: in the Meta ad library, Page "Mobile Review Journal S07" (73 likes, categorized as "Health Service") is running 360 ads, with 470 in total historically. All are videos with an install CTA, landing on Drama TV. The same Page also ran ads for an AI photo app (com.aiphoto.aiart.artgenerator.photoenhance). Source: metaads library, tracked by 2026-11-05. Using a small Page with a made-up name to run ads for several apps is standard practice for paid acquisition studios.
    - This novel app doesn't show up in the Meta, Google, or TikTok (Europe) ad libraries. Our libraries only track listed products, so **not appearing doesn't mean it wasn't advertised** . It most likely ran through Google App Campaigns or another Meta Page; not verified.

2. **Store exposure from the India category chart** : the other spots in India's Books & Reference Top Free top 10 are established big apps like Wikipedia, Kindle, the Bible, and various calendar apps (v_chart 11-06). The only novel app is Pratilipi (#6). A new app can squeeze in with a small budget and gain some category-chart exposure and the "#10 top free books & reference" label. From 11-04 on, it still gets a few hundred installs a day, likely leftover organic traffic from the chart and search.

3. **ASO uses generic keywords** : the title "Novels: Read Fiction Stories" uses the search terms directly as the name; the description is packed with romance / werewolf / mafia / billionaire / enemies to lovers, popular BookTok and web-novel tags.

4. Content channels and press: X (x-radar, 30 posts in the last 0 days) and Jina web search only return store pages, APK sites, and aggregator pages like Apptopia and Similarweb. There is no press coverage, no creator endorsements, and no Reddit discussion.

### 4. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, global cumulative installs) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wattpad | Android / iOS / web | 2006 (the app has been around a long time) | 346M | UGC community and writer ecosystem; this one has no community and no authors |
| GoodNovel (incl. Buenovela, MegaNovel) | Android/iOS | 2020 | 38.9M (main app) | Contracted authors, owned rights, a regular on best-seller charts (#20 on Thailand's Top Grossing chart); this one doesn't explain where its original content comes from |
| Dreame / Innovel | Android/iOS | 2018 | 41.5M | Leader in werewolf and CEO romance, also unlocking chapters with coins; this one is a stripped-down template version |
| Fizzo | Android | 2021 | 85.9M | ByteDance-owned, free to read with ads; the monetization is similar, but without the content scale |
| Pratilipi | Android | 2016 | 54.6M | Homegrown Indian multi-language content; ranks #6 on the same India chart |
| WebNovel (Qidian International) | Android/iOS | 2017 | 32.3M | Chinese web novel translations, licensed |
| MoboReader family (BestNovel, ReadNow, Lera…) | Android | 2017– | 2.7M–9.6M each | One company running multiple brands, the veteran of this app's playbook |
| **Novel Fic - Stories & Novels** (CONG TY CO PHAN NONG NGHIEP XANH HA NOI) | Android | 2026-09-24 | 86k | Same template: github.io site + Google Sites privacy page + random gmail; from 10-12 to 10-15 it pushed 60k installs, then went to zero |
| **My Novel: Read Stories, Novels** (CONG TY CO PHAN XAY DUNG ALPHA) | Android | 2026-10-07 | 61k | Same template; from 10-21 to 10-26 it pushed 50k installs and once reached #26 on that India chart, now only a few a day |
| Amberia: Novels & Stories(Crazy Finger Studio) | Android | 2026-09-17 | 41k | Has its own domain and copy, #3 on Japan's chart; looks more like a legitimate short-drama/novel company |
| Big-company features | Google Play Books, Kindle | Very early | tens of billions / 490M | Licensed ebooks, not web novels |

Also, the wave of Vietnamese mask short-drama apps (TV Stories, AuraReel, VioletBinge, SDramiq, Duvela, Cuentia…, listed from 2026-08 through October, each with 60k–900k installs) is the same crowd running the same playbook as this product's sister app, Drama TV.

### 5. Why it could "run" at all

- The India Books & Reference free chart is an easy bar: about 1,000 installs a day gets you into the top 15, and above 10k a day gets you to the top 10. Paid acquisition in India is also cheap, so a burst of a few thousand dollars (unverified, based on typical Indian CPI) is enough to push it up.

- The team has a ready-made pipeline: account shells, template code, privacy pages and ad landing pages are all in place, so it can push hard within two weeks of launch. Drama TV, on the same account, already proved the playbook (935k installs).

- The themes are werewolf, gangster, domineering CEO and revenge, which have been validated in web-novel going global, and the titles use search terms directly.

- This isn't pulled up by user demand: there are no accumulated reviews and no discussion, and after paid acquisition stopped, daily installs fell from over 10k to about 650.

### 6. Differentiation

No. The features (bookshelf, reading mode, font size, themes, categories, search) are standard for novel readers, and the copy is nearly the same template as sibling clones (My Novel, Novel Fic). The only real "differentiation" is operational: different company shells and package names, the same product spread across multiple copies, each pushed into category charts in India and the Middle East to see which one retains users and pays back. So it surfaces because of distribution tactics plus a low bar on the charts, not because of differentiation.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: almost nobody knows about it yet. No media, no X discussion, and revenue isn't public; only APK sites and data aggregators index it.

- Copycats or same-template apps: Novel Fic (09-24) and My Novel (10-07) came even earlier. It's less a copy of this one than the same playbook mass-produced, and the Vietnamese mask short-drama apps are a whole crowd of them.

### 8. What others can learn

- Start with low-bar "small country × category chart" combinations (India Books, UAE Books), get chart exposure with a small volume, then check organic retention.

- During the push phase, leave in-app purchases off, and only turn on IAP and ads after the push, to protect the rating and get past review first.

- Run one product across multiple accounts and package names to spread the risk of bans, and test different creatives and regions at the same time. There is compliance risk here: Google Play will ban whole batches of accounts for duplicate content and clone accounts.

### 9. Uncertain

- There's no direct evidence of which paid acquisition channels this novel app used (Google UAC or a different Meta Page), or how much it spent.

- Whether the content is licensed or scraped; whether the $3.99–$17.99 in-app purchases can pay back; and how retention looks.

- Whether it's the same team as Novel Fic and My Novel: the template and tactics match, but with different company shells this can't be confirmed.

- How many of those 39 reviews are fake.
