"Once approved, how does the money get into my bank?": a loan calculator got 790k installs in two months by riding "people who borrow"

What it is A loan calculator for monthly payments and fixed-deposit returns. It's free, earns from ads, and doesn't lend money itself.

Why it took off Google strictly polices loan apps by country in these markets. People searching "loan" in the store were met by localized titles that caught that traffic, and waves of paid acquisition pushed it up the finance charts.

CHow you could ride it Don't build yet another loan calculator. Take the playbook: find a category where platform policy has choked off supply but search demand remains, build an adjacent tool that policy doesn't touch, localize titles by country to catch high-intent searches, and monetize with ads.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and it can still gain traction (a similar app that launched in September also rose 120k this week), but this niche already has about 45 same-template apps and account networks. It competes on paid acquisition and on when Google cleans up, and the product itself has no room to be better. What's worth learning is the playbook, not this category. Still almost nobody knows about it

Loan Finance Calc is an ordinary loan calculator on Google Play, made by a small studio in Indonesia that makes photo recovery apps. It has reached the finance free charts in the Philippines, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam and Argentina, and many people who install it assume it's an app that can get them a loan. This piece covers what it is, where the traffic and money come from, why there are more than forty identical apps, and whether you should follow it.

A Thai review

On 2026 Oct 22, a Thai user gave this app 4 stars and wrote: "How do we know if we're approved? If it's approved, how does the money get into the bank?" The next day another Thai user gave 5 stars: "If you can really borrow, thank you so much." The day before that, someone wrote: "Don't use my personal information, card ending 99672, for any purpose."

The app doesn't lend money. What it does is take an amount, interest rate and term and calculate monthly payments and total interest; it also has fixed-deposit calculation, side-by-side comparison of several loans, unit conversion and a world clock. Its Thai store name is "เครื่องคิดเลขการเงินสินเชื่อ" (loan finance calculator), in Malaysia it's "Kalkulator Kewangan Pinjaman", in Mexico and Argentina "Calculadora de Préstamos", and in Vietnam "Máy tính tài chính vay nợ". Each name contains the local word for "loan".

A one-star review from Argentina, 11-03, puts the gap most bluntly: "You can't do any of the paperwork, it doesn't exist at all."

It barely moved for the first two months, then took off in early October: after 10-13 shipped a new version it gained 80,000 in one day, and in between there were stretches of only a few dozen. A curve like this, in waves, doesn't look like organic word of mouth; it looks more like someone switching paid acquisition budgets on and off (inference).

Who's behind it

The store page's "About the developer" lists a person's name, Mohammad Jamil, country Indonesia, and a gmail address. The developer website is myrecoverdeletedphoto.com, which opens to another app's download page: the same developer's Photo Recover Go, a photo recovery tool with over 10M downloads. The privacy policy is a template page built on Google Sites.

In other words, this is a small studio that made ad-monetized tools like "photo recovery / flashlight" and moved the same approach onto the word "loan". The product itself has no barrier to entry.

Where users come from: people searching "loan"

To understand why it took off, you first need to know the situation for loan apps in these countries. Google Play has specific policies for personal loan apps in the Philippines, Nigeria, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Kenya and Pakistan: they require local licenses and restrict permissions like reading contacts and SMS, and in recent years large numbers of predatory loan apps have been removed (ESET and Lookout have both published reports). Real loan apps have become harder to list, but people searching for "loan", "préstamo" or "pinjaman" in the store haven't disappeared.

A calculator doesn't lend money, so these policies don't cover it. Retitling it with the local word for "loan calculator" lets it legitimately appear in those search results. The reviews are the evidence: "nice loan" (Philippines, 10-18), "helpful for agent requirements" (11-02,196 people marked it helpful), and the Thai reviews above asking whether they were approved. The people coming in want money, not a payment table.

Where the money comes from: full-screen ads

It doesn't charge; it runs on ads. The most-upvoted review (10-12,845 people found it helpful) says: "The pop-up ads are so annoying. I thought installing it would get rid of the ads covering the whole phone, but it still forces you to watch the same one." A Nigerian review from 11-05: "Don't install. You'll only keep seeing pop-up ads, and it never lets you see the app itself." The developer, 11-05, gave all these negative reviews the same polite canned reply.

Why the word loan: in Southeast Asia and Nigeria, people searching "loan" are the most valuable users to cash-loan companies, which bid aggressively for them locally, so a single ad impression is worth more when the user has financial intent than a flashlight user (inference; a common industry view, its ad rates were not verified). A more aggressive approach is also publicly taught in the industry: during review, only the calculator is shown, while real users who come in see a page stuffed with loan affiliate links, earning commissions per application. Whether this app does that can't be known, since no install package was obtained.

Look closely at the ratings too: of 347 ratings, 5 stars make up seventy percent, many 5-star reviews are just two or three words like "excellent thanks" or "good" yet get hundreds of helpful votes, and the 1-star reviews are almost all complaining about ads and "can't borrow money". The real satisfaction is probably lower than the 4.2 average (inference).

Who it competes with: forty-plus identical apps

Counting in Google Play's finance category, there are at least about 45 loan calculators published from October 2025 onward with "calc" in the title and the same approach: gmail addresses, developer names with no connection to finance, developer websites on other tool apps' domains, all charting on finance free charts in Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. The top few (Google Play, 11-06):

Three things stand out. First, it isn't the originator: it's a copycat, arriving three to four months after the 3–May wave. Second, someone is running a farm of accounts, bought or rented developer accounts ("Tennis Association" and "Medical Billing Co" both carry the same domain string). Third, the window is still open: Loan Calc Easy, which launched in September, also gained 120k this week, and new accounts are still launching through 9–October. So far there's no sign of Google clearing this category in bulk.

The real competitors aren't on this chart. Users want the actual cash-loan apps like Tala, JuanHand, and OKash, which rank in the top 20 of the finance charts in the Philippines and Nigeria. They're likely also advertisers on these calculators (inference). Functionally, Google search boxes and bank loan calculators on national bank websites are free and ad-free. These apps' value has never been in their features.

If it were you

C: You can learn a tactic here, but chasing loan calculators directly isn't worth it. This slot already has more than forty identical apps, and there are account farms running it. If you go in, you're competing on ad budget and on when Google cleans up, not on product.

Who it suits: small studios that already build ad-monetized utility apps, have a Google Play developer account and paid user acquisition experience, and can accept policy risk. For them, this is just a new keyword.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to build a product with real users, word of mouth, and long-term revenue; anyone without paid UA or ad-monetization experience; anyone who can't stand the gap between users expecting to borrow money and finding mostly ads. The bad reviews and takedown risk are part of this playbook.

How to do it (if you must): Don't build another identical loan calculator. Take the tactic instead: find a category where platform policy has blocked supply but search demand is still there, then build an adjacent tool that isn't covered by that policy to capture the search traffic. Write titles in the local language for each country separately, and push one package across ten countries. The closer user intent is to spending money, the more valuable the ads. If you stay in loans anyway, make the tool better than the templates: real local interest rates, fee comparisons across lending apps, and fraud warnings. Users who come in then get something useful, and ratings and retention will beat the competition.

How to acquire users: Store search is the main channel, with titles and screenshots localized by country. Then use a small paid UA or incentivized install budget to push the app into the top 50 of the finance charts, so chart exposure brings in organic traffic. This slot has no content play; nobody is watching short videos for it.

When to move: This tactic has been running since late 2025, almost a year now. The whole category could be cleared at any time, so if you do it, budget for payback in months, not years.

Signs this read is wrong: ① The calculators on the Philippine and Nigerian finance charts get removed in bulk within a month or two, or Google expands its personal-loan policy to cover loan calculators too. The window is closed. ② Later similar apps (like Loan Calc Easy) stall at a few hundred thousand installs, with daily new installs dropping to a few thousand within 7 days. That means paid UA has run out of room. ③ Conversely, if new accounts at year-end can still gain 100k+ installs a week, the ad money here is bigger than it looks, and the math is worth redoing.

Where users come from
  • Confirmed Store search / ASO (locally localized "loan" titles): The chart_rank data shows store-specific titles: เครื่องคิดเลขการเงินสินเชื่อ, Kalkulator Kewangan Pinjaman, Calculadora de Préstamos, Máy tính tài chính vay nợ. Searching "loan" on Play autocompletes to "loan calculator" (keyproxy tutorial).
  • Inference Paid UA or incentivized installs to push charts: 790k installs with a 0 rating; daily gains alternate between +12, +99, +3 and +82k; traffic ramped in step with v1.3.0.0 of 10-13. Ad library data isn't in the set, so this can't be verified directly.

Why Loan Finance Calc (com.financeflow.loan.calc) made it onto the charts

Channel: Google Play | Developer: MOROTAI SMART ([email protected]) | Store launch 2026-07-29 | Research day 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It didn't break out on the product alone. This is a utility shell / traffic arbitrage playbook: build a compliant, simple "loan calculator," localize titles into local languages to capture "loan / préstamo / pinjaman / สินเชื่อ / vay" search terms, and monetize through ads (the store lists it as containing ads, with no in-app purchases). It targets users who want to borrow money in the Philippines, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, and Argentina, markets with high cash-loan demand but strict Google enforcement on loan apps by country. The install curve jumps, with 790k installs and a 0 rating. That doesn't look like organic growth. It looks more like paid UA or incentivized installs pushing the app up the category charts, then feeding off store search. Our database has at least 45 more apps using the same approach. This one is among the later followers.

Curve since launch (AppstoreSpy estimates):

  • Launched 7-29, reached only about 9-10 installs by 6,054, and about 9-29 by 17,818. Barely moved for the first two months.
  • Accelerated suddenly starting 10-04: 10-04 gained about +14.5k in a day, and 10-08 about +9.4k. In between, daily gains were single or double digits (a clear jump).
  • 10-13 release 1.3.0.0: cumulative 105,651 that day; 10-14 single-day gain about +82k; 10-23 single-day gain about +83k; 10-27 reached 578,332.
  • Monthly totals: September about 20k, October about 612k, first 6 days of November about 158k.
  • Our own daily snapshots: 10-29 → 11-06 went from 578,471 to 790,908; over the same period, category ranks climbed steadily (Philippines finance 34→20, Argentina 123→44, Malaysia 139→81, Nigeria overall 176→75).

Several anomaly signals:

  • 790k installs, 0 ratings. Comparable apps usually get one rating for every 1,000–2,600 installs, with 1 ratings (Quick Loan Calc has 2.21M installs and 837 ratings; Loan Calc Hub has 4.49M and 1,921). This app has none at all, or they're hidden. Users who install it and barely open or interact with it look nothing like people who found it on their own.
  • Jumpy daily gains: +80k in one day, then tens the next. Part of this is AppstoreSpy's observation gaps being averaged out. But 10-05–10-07 (+12, +99, +3) is the difference between real observations, which means installs came in waves (paid UA budget switches or bulk campaigns), not a smooth organic curve.
  • Every store's title is localized as a "loan calculator": Thai "เครื่องคิดเลขการเงินสินเชื่อ", Malaysian "Kalkulator Kewangan Pinjaman", Mexico/Argentina "Calculadora de Préstamos", Vietnamese "Máy tính tài chính vay nợ" (the store titles in the chart_rank table). This is deliberately targeting local "loan" search terms.

2. Who the developer is

  • MOROTAI SMART: Only this one app is in our database. The Play developer page describes it as "Offer features to help you search for and restore photos…". Its other app is Photo Recover Go (mica.recov.dlaq.phoqem), with 10M+ downloads, 3.5 stars, and 5.36K reviews (Google Play developer page, read on 2026-11-06). chrome-stats also lists Simple FlashLight (app.morotai.mobile.selam_morotai) under the same name. The AppBrain summary says "active since 2025" with about 10M total installs.
  • The "developer website" listed is myrecoverdeletedphoto.com. That page is just Photo Recover Go's download landing page. The privacy policy is a template page built on Google Sites. The email is a gmail address.
  • Conclusion: This is a small studio that builds utility apps like photo recovery and flashlights and monetizes through ads. (Morotai is a small island in Indonesia, and the name suggests an Indonesian background, unverified.) It took the utility-category playbook of paid UA and ad monetization and applied it to the "loan calculator" keyword. AppGazers estimates its in-app purchase revenue at under $5K (it has no IAP, so the money comes from ads).

3. Competitors: a whole cluster of "loan calculator shells"

In our database, FINANCE category apps with calc in the title, launched after 2025-10, number at least about 45. Nearly all share one template: a gmail address, a developer name unrelated to finance, a developer website that is another utility app's domain, few or no ratings, and placement on free finance charts in Southeast Asia, Africa, or Latin America. The top apps (googleplay database app_profile, 11-06):

A few things stand out:

  • One operator, several apps: the domains loancalculator355fy*.netlify.app are registered under GUT TENNIS ASSOCIATION INC, EXPERT MEDICAL BILLING LLC, Fergus Games, Shop Moon and INFINITE HILLS PRODUCTIONS INC, i.e. "tennis association", "medical billing" and similar shell names. These are clearly bought or rented developer accounts. wilsoncap's two apps share sre.sfgptzf.com.
  • Utility-app studios pivoting to loan calculators is common: the developer domains are photo recovery, PDF, antivirus, cleaner and location-tracking sites (pdfviewerplus, antivirusace, documentreaderpdfeditor, photorecoverfinder, allrecoverpro, excellentfilerecovery, cleansweepproa, gpslocationtrackerpro, phonelocationtrackers, vizaimagic). This app (myrecoverdeletedphoto) and Loan Calc Easy (photorecoverfinder) both came over from photo recovery.
  • This app launched 7-29, 3–4 months after the 3–May wave of leaders, so it is a follower, not a pioneer. It added 212k installs in the last 7 days and ranks third in the cluster this week, behind Quick Loan Calc and Loan Calc Hub.

Others doing the same thing:

  • Legitimate loan / EMI calculators: Personal EMI Loan Calculator (5pm Technologies, 2.59M installs, mostly India / UAE), bank and central-bank web calculators (e.g. the Philippine central bank BSP's Bank Loan Calculator), web pages like calculator.net and Bankrate, and loan calculators built into Google search results. Functionally they are no different from this app, but they don't go after "loan" store search terms in Southeast Asia and Africa.
  • Real lending apps (Tala, JuanHand, MabilisCash, OKash, EaseMoni, etc., all in the top 20 of the ph / ng finance charts). They are what users actually want, and the most likely advertisers or traffic destinations for these calculator apps (inferred, not verified).

Differentiation: none on product. The personal / business / mortgage / car loan + FD/RD + rate comparison + unit conversion + world clock feature set in the description is basically the same template as the other apps in the cluster. The only real difference is distribution: per-store localized titles, the choice of market mix (Philippines / Nigeria / Thailand / Vietnam / Argentina), and the pace of paid installs.

4. Where users come from

Content / creators / X / mediaThe top 20 TikTok results for "Loan Finance Calc" have nothing relevant; x-radar shows 0 posts on "loan calculator app" in the last 30 days; on the web there are only auto-generated pages on data sites like similarweb, appfigures and appgazers.Confirmed none
Cross-promotion from existing usersThe same developer's Photo Recover Go has 10M+ installs and could be used for cross-promotionNo (unverified)

Where the money comes from: the store lists it as containing ads and with no in-app purchases, so revenue comes from ads. The logic: users searching "loan" in Southeast Asia or Nigeria are highly valuable to cash-loan advertisers (cash-loan apps buy heavily in these markets), so ad eCPMs for finance-intent users run higher than for ordinary utility apps. There is also a more aggressive play in the industry: "during review, show only the calculator / news; real users see a loan-navigation page embedded as a WebView with 10–20 affiliate links, earning CPA commissions, plus push notifications" (original text of keyproxy.net's financial-arbitrage tutorial). Whether this app has a remote switch or WebView redirection could not be verified, as the APK was not obtained (the apkpure download was blocked by 403).

5. Why now, and why these countries

  • Google Play has country-specific policies for personal loan apps (India, Indonesia, Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Thailand). Licenses are required, permissions are restricted, and many non-compliant loan apps have been removed (ESET welivesecurity's "Beware of predatory fin(tech)"; Lookout's report on predatory loan apps). Real lending apps have become harder to list in these markets, but the search demand for "borrowing" remains. A calculator does not lend money and so is not subject to that policy, which makes it the cheapest shell for capturing that search traffic.
  • This cluster appeared concentrated around 2026-03–05, and kept expanding through 10–November (9-09, 9-23, 10-09, 10-10, 10-14 all had new accounts), which suggests the approach has not yet been cleared at scale by Google (none of these apps appear in our gone table).

6. How many people have seen it

  • This app: no media coverage, not on X, not on TikTok, and the founder has not posted any revenue; only auto-generated data-site pages. → "Few people know about it yet."
  • But the approach itself is already crowded: the library holds about 45 apps on the same template, with the leaders at 200–5M installs, plus multi-account matrices (the 355fy series). The approach has long circulated in small circles (it is spelled out in affiliate-marketing and arbitrage tutorials), so this is not a blue ocean.

7. What to borrow

  • "Compliant shell + high-intent search terms": find a category where platform policy is restricting supply but demand is large (here, cash loans), then build an unregulated adjacent utility to capture the searches.
  • Localize the title separately in each store to capture local-language search terms, with one APK targeting 10 countries.
  • Finance-intent users carry a higher ad CPM. For ad-monetized utility apps, a finance shell earns more than a flashlight or photo recovery app.
  • Utility studios port the existing paid-acquisition plus ad-monetization playbook onto new keywords, so the marginal cost is very low.

8. Still unclear

  • Whether the volume is paid acquisition, incentive walls or fake traffic (the 0 rating could also mean ratings were hidden or deleted by Google; apiplay has an old screenshot showing it at 3.8 stars and 5K+ in the Cameroon store, suggesting it had ratings earlier).
  • Whether the app has remote config or WebView loan redirection (the APK was not obtained).
  • The ad CPM and ROI, and whether the money actually comes back; whether Photo Recover Go sends it traffic.
  • The developer's nationality and actual operator (the Indonesian link for Morotai is unverified).
  • Whether the store release date 7-29 has been reset (it shows up in a Sensor Tower URL for a 2026-04-20 Kenya finance chart, but that page most likely shows current data, so it can't be used as evidence).
