Bangladesh has no official "where's my train" app. A university graduate built one using passengers' phones, and it added 180k installs in a week
What it is: Bangladesh's version of "where's my train". Passengers on a train share their phone's location, and others see the train's position on a map. Each train also has a chat room.
Why it took off: the official option is paid SMS with no free live-location app, and it was first to market, so as users grew the locations got more accurate. In late October, a 3D map was filmed and shared as a short video, local media ran two tutorials back to back, and installs jumped from a few thousand a day to thirty or forty thousand.
CHow to follow it: Don't build another one in Bangladesh. Go to another country where trains or long-distance buses are constantly late and the official side offers no free live tracking. Copy the model: timetable-based estimates + crowdsourced rider reports + a chat for each trip + easy sharing with family. Name it with the words locals actually search for, and push it through local short videos and media ahead of the holiday travel rush.

Bangladesh Railway has only one official way to check where a train is: send a paid SMS. Md. Al Amin, a graduate of Jashore University of Science and Technology, built a free app that has passengers share their phones' GPS, so others can see on a map how far the train has got. It grew slowly through word of mouth for six months. In late October, a 3D map was posted on Facebook, and it added 180k installs in about a week. Below: why it took off, why the leader is getting harder to catch, why the money is so thin, and where to go if you want to copy it.
A review 57 people marked helpful
On Sep 9, a user named Eftyaz Ahmed left a review on Google Play for BD Train Tracking. He neither praised nor criticized it. He just raised a question:
"After installing, it doesn't request location permission by default, so passengers have to turn on 'share location' manually while riding. Many people forget, so the app can't show the train's real live position."
By Nov 6, this review was the one under the app that the most people had marked "helpful" (57 people). It names the core of the business: the app produces no data itself; the data all comes from users sitting on the train. The more people on trains with the app open, the more accurate the positions; the more accurate, the more people install.
Two months later, the loop started turning. On Nov 2, the Bangladeshi portal Jagonews24's tech section published a tutorial titled "Where is the train? How to check with the 3D map", whose second sentence reads "A young man named Md. Al Amin invented this app." The next day it ran another piece listing every way to check train positions, starting with the official SMS and then covering this app. In its words, "many people on Facebook are posting their experiences and train-tracking posts using the 3D map."
What it is
In one line: Bangladesh's version of "where's my train".
- Passenger crowdsourced location: you board a train, tap "I'm Inside Train", and your phone's GPS becomes that train's position. The store page is candid about it: "Live data is only available when users on that train are sharing their location." When no one is sharing, it falls back to the timetable.
- One chat room per train: people on the train and people waiting at stations can ask directly "where are you?" or "how late are you?". According to figures Jagonews cites, there are about 15k chat messages a day.
- Sharing with family: send your train's position to family at home, and they open the link and install the app.
- 3D map: trains move across a 3D map that you can zoom, and you can see other trains on nearby lines too. The late-October version added a "fly-in" animation. This is the piece best suited to short videos.
- Arrival alarm: added in the Nov 5 version (v4.8.7). It rings when you're near your stop, even on the lock screen or on silent, and has a backup alarm when offline.
Basic features are free, supports Bengali and English, and is available on Android and iOS (the iOS version launched Jul 30).
What gap it fills
Bangladesh Railway has official GPS data, but it's only exposed through one SMS service: you text "TR" plus the train number to 16318 and get back a text reply saying which station the train is at and how late it is. Each message costs money (about 5 taka), and there's no map. The official ticketing app Rail Sheba only lets you buy tickets and check schedules; it doesn't show live train positions.
And late trains are the norm in Bangladesh. The opening of the Jagonews piece describes the scene: you've bought your ticket, departure time is close, but you don't know whether the train will arrive on time or where it is now. People who have to pick someone up at the station also want to know where the train is first.
The need exists every day, and the government offers no free way to meet it. That's the gap.
How big the growth got
The launch date is much earlier than the store page shows. The store page says Nov 1, which is the date that got reset when the store info was changed. The developer posted on LinkedIn on Apr 12 saying BD Train Tracking was already "helping thousands track trains in real time"; third-party estimates put it at about 100k installs by mid-May.
Monthly new installs (third-party estimate):
| Month | New installs (est.) |
|---|---|
| May | About 20k |
| June | About 34k |
| July | About 30k |
| August | About 57k |
| September | About 60k |
| October | About 127k |
| November 1–5 | About 161k |
Google Play cumulative installs: 10-29 was 410k, 11-06 was 590k, and 7 days later it had added 180k more. Around 11-02 it jumped 78k, and around 11-05 it jumped another 82k, both times right after Jagonews published. The rating count over the same period went from 8,728 to 13,088, and daily new ratings went from 146 to 750–820. 11-06 When I opened the Play store page via the Bangladesh store, it showed 4.8 stars, 13.5k reviews, and #2 in the free Travel & Local chart.
It also sits on the free Travel charts in Saudi Arabia (best rank #12), the UAE, Malaysia and Singapore. All of these have large Bangladeshi worker and expatriate populations who are working abroad and need to travel home, or want to see where a family member's train is (inference; the expat share hasn't been verified).
Where users come from
A generic name. The app is simply called "BD Train Tracking", which is exactly the term Bangladeshis type when searching for this. In early November, searching "Bangladesh train live location app" in English put its Play page as the first result. The first step of the Jagonews tutorial is also "search for BD Train Tracking in the store".
Word of mouth on Facebook. It has its own Facebook group; local pages like Gen Z BD 360 shared a post about the arrival alarm (254 likes); Daily Manobkantha posted a video titled "Local youth invent new app"; and the local media account The Quoted posted a video in Nov 2, "Now you can see live trains and 3D routes", with 13k views.
TikTok alt accounts.@bangladesh_railway_fan1 posted "track Bangladesh trains with BD train tracking" in Nov 1, 11k views, plus a batch of smaller alts with a few hundred to a few thousand views. A journalist account with 89k followers posted "see all Bangladesh train live locations for free" in Oct 25, 277k views, 11.8k likes. The video may not promote this app; unverified.
The app recruits its own users.Share your location with family and they'll install it; correctly sharing location earns points, false reports get you banned. Every passenger can bring in new users.
Almost no paid acquisition. No ads found in the Meta or TikTok ad libraries (not finding them doesn't mean none ran), and its own Facebook page has only 1 followers.
One possible push is timing: Durga Puja falls in mid-October, exams end in late October, students head home, and lots of people ride trains (inference, no direct evidence).
Who it's competing with
No shortage of rivals; the shortage is rivals with enough users.
| Product | Scale | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Official SMS: TR sends 16318 | Official data | Accurate, but each query is paid and text-only |
| TrainKothai ("where is the train") | About 170k installs on Play, +7k in 39 days; 351 ratings on iOS | The most direct rival. Launched May 21, also crowdsourced plus timetables, and forwards official SMS data for free. No sign-up, with a website at trainkothai.com pulling search traffic. Added a 2D map in Nov 3. |
| BD Train Tracker(Hexora) | About 13K installs | A similar app that launched in June |
| TrainKothay(Saadel Lab) | ~1,700 installs | Launched Oct 24, with a name one letter off from TrainKothai |
| TrainTracking BD | Not verified | Launched in October with an almost identical name, posting TikTok tutorial videos every day |
| A batch of websites (trainkoi, trainjatri, etc.) | Search traffic | Most estimate position from timetables, not real GPS |
The product form is nearly identical and the features are easy to copy: TrainKothai added a 3D map the same day Jagonews covered 3D. BD Train Tracking leads on scale: it started a few months ahead of TrainKothai, has about 3.5 times its installs, and adds 4–5 times as many per week. In a crowdsourced product, scale is accuracy, and accuracy brings more scale. Chasing the leader in Bangladesh means chasing something that speeds up on its own.
Where the money comes from: very little
- Ads: the store page says it contains ads, and a reviewer notes "sometimes ads pop up, but for free it's great."
- Subscription: the website lists ৳20/month, ৳40/3 for three months, ৳65 for six months, ৳90/year. You get ad removal and more alerts. ৳20 is roughly $0.16 (estimate). In-app purchases on Play are $0.19–0.69 each.
- The website also has a donation link to "keep the servers running" and a small shop selling travel gear.
Revenue is not public. Ad rates and willingness to pay in Bangladesh are both very low, so each user brings in little money and the business depends on volume (inference). This is a product users love but one that struggles to make real money.
If it were you
One-line verdict: C. The fight in Bangladesh is already over. The leader has network effects, the number two and three copycats are already in the market. What's worth learning is the playbook, which can be moved to other countries, but each user brings in very little money, so work out the math before you start.
Who it suits: developers who live in (or know well) another country where trains and long-distance buses are routinely late and officials offer no free live location, and who can build it alone; people who can speak the local language on Facebook groups and TikTok; people who can accept treating it as public service plus a side project.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to launch another one in Bangladesh (the leader is pulling further ahead every day, and the fourth copycat has no spot); anyone counting on subscriptions (৳20/month is already the ceiling); countries where the government already offers a good free live location app (check this before you start).
How to do it:
- Choose the country first. Three criteria: lots of people ride trains or long-distance buses, delays are normal, and there's no free official live location. South Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa are all worth checking country by country (this article did not verify each one).
- Skip crowdsourcing at launch: estimate positions from timetables, and plug in official data where you can (TrainKothai forwards official SMS data). That way even trains nobody is sharing location for have a rough position.
- Location sharing should be on by default and take one step. The most upvoted complaint about BD Train Tracking is exactly this.
- One chat room per train and one tap to send your location to family: these two features together drive both retention and acquisition. Add arrival alarms too, a feature riders use every single trip.
- Name it with the words locals actually type when searching.
How to get users: build something that works as a short video (a train moving across a 3D map) and get the local railway fan and student accounts to film it. Pitch a how-to article to local tech media; two Jagonews stories brought spikes of roughly 80k each. Launch ahead of holidays and exam season, when everyone heads home.
When to be early: there's no single window, because each country runs its own. If someone in your chosen country has already reached the top, the same network effects will block you, so first check who is already building, then launch before the next homecoming peak in that country.
Signs you've read it wrong: ① Bangladesh Railway launches a free official live location app, or Rail Sheba adds live location, which means the gap will be filled by officials; ② TrainKothai catches up within a month or two using free data plus official feeds, which means network effects are weaker than assumed and late entrants in other countries can win on data sources; ③ after the spike, installs fall back to a few thousand a day, which means this wave came mostly from short videos and media, not from organic spread you can sustain.

Why BD Train Tracking (com.gatishil.bdtrainguide) came out on top
Channel: Google Play (iOS version id6791611007 also exists). Developer: Gatishil Ventures (founder Md. Al Amin / Al amin Hossain, a Jashore University of Science and Technology graduate, one-person company). Research date 2026-11-06.
One line
Bangladesh Railway has no official real-time train tracking app (the official option is a paid SMS, TR <train number> sent to 16318). BD Train Tracking built free train location tracking with "GPS shared by passengers on board + one chat room per train" and grew slowly on word of mouth for half a year. At the end of October, its 3D map view went viral in Facebook/TikTok short videos. In November, the Bangladeshi portal Jagonews24 ran two tutorial pieces back to back on 2–3, and daily installs rose from about 4k a day to about 2.7–39k a day. Crowdsourcing has network effects: the more users, the more accurate the locations, so the leader keeps getting stronger.
1. Data: how big it actually got
- The launch date 2026-11-01 on the data card is the date the listing was reset when the info was edited, not the real launch. AppBrain says the developer account has been "active for about 10 months" (i.e., since early 2026); the founder 2026-04-12 posted on LinkedIn that it's already "helping thousands of users track trains in real time"; and AppstoreSpy's backfilled data shows 2026-05-12 with 101,399 installs (googleplay library
app_day_ext). - Monthly new installs (AppstoreSpy estimates, aggregated monthly from
app_day_ext): May about 20k → June 34k → July 30k → August 57k → September 60k → October 127k → November 1–5 days already at 161k. - Our own collection (googleplay
app_day): 10-29 410,076 → 11-06 590,127,7 days +180,051. Rating count 8,728 → 13,088, with daily new ratings rising from 146 to 600–820. The store tier 11-02 jumped from 100k+ to 500k+. - The release cadence is fast: 10-28 v4.7.5,10-31 v4.7.9,11-05 v4.8.7 (added an arrival alarm that rings on the lock screen, and an offline backup alarm).
- Charts: in our library, 30 stores do not include Bangladesh. It appears in Saudi Arabia (best #12), UAE (27), US (39), Singapore (55), Malaysia (68), Japan, and Hong Kong's Travel Top Free charts. These stores either have large Bangladeshi labor and expat populations (Saudi/UAE/Malaysia/Singapore) or have low chart barriers; which one applies is unverified. The Travel Top Grossing ranks are nearly identical across stores, all at #141–162. This is the tail of the same aggregate chart, and should not be read as a revenue signal.
- Ratings: the Play page shows 4.4 stars and 13.4K reviews; Jagonews cites 4.8 stars and 10.1k reviews 11-02. Before 11-03 in our library, the rating histogram is in a placeholder format like [x,0,0,0,2x]. Only the later distribution is real, so the early distribution can't be used.
2. Competitors (doing the same thing)
| Product | Where | When it launched | Scale | How it differs from BD Train Tracking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official Bangladesh Railway TTMS SMS (send TR <train number> to 16318) / Banglalink Train Tracking VAS | Carrier SMS | Years ago | Official national railway GPS data | Accurate official data, but each SMS costs about 5 taka and is text only, with no map and no chat |
| Rail Sheba (official ticketing app) | Android/iOS | Years ago | Official main ticket-purchasing entry point | Only sells tickets and looks up schedules, no real-time location. This is the gap. |
| TrainKothai – BD Train Tracker(The Flutter Way / Algoramming Systems) | Android, iOS, and web at trainkothai.com | Android 2026-05-21,iOS 2026-07-09 | About 170k installs, +7k in 38.6 days; 351 ratings on iOS | The most direct rival: crowdsourced GPS + timetable estimation + free relay of official SMS data. No sign-up, a website for SEO, everything free. It also runs a 3D view (Facebook "V2 3D"). Its installs are about 1/3.5 of BD Train Tracking's, growing at about 1/5. |
| Find My Train: Bangladesh | Android | About 2025-11 (posted on r/Dhaka) | Unverified, not in our library | Community crowdsourcing, the developer promotes it on Reddit, small scale |

| BR Explorer | Android, web | Relatively early | Not verified | Pay per query (10 taka 5 per query) to see live locations |
| Websites: railwayticket.bd, trainkoi.com, trainjatri.com, trainlivelocation.com, trains.fyi | Web | Mixed | Relies on SEO and ads | Most only estimate location from timetables, not real GPS |
| Where is my Train (India) | Android | 2015 | 570M installs | Covers only Indian railways and doesn't work in Bangladesh, but it is the product-form prototype |
Conclusion: this market isn't short on competitors; it's short on a crowdsourced network with enough users. BD Train Tracking started early (2026 early, a few months ahead of TrainKothai), claimed the generic name "BD Train Tracking" (itself a term users search for), and with user density its data is the most accurate.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Store search + generic-name ASO (confirmed): the app name is "BD Train Tracking", and when searching Bing/Jina for "Bangladesh train live location app" or "bangladesh railway live train tracking november 2026", its Play page is the first result (the search terms are visible in utm_term). The package name bdtrainguide and the reset date on the data card suggest it changed its name and description to match this search term.
- Facebook short videos and group word of mouth (confirmed): Jagonews 11-03 original text: "Recently the most discussed one is BD Train Tracking; many people on Facebook are posting about their experience and watching trains on the 3D map." It has its own Facebook group (groups/1111739727261067), along with a Gen Z BD 360 post (an arrival alarm post, 254 likes), a Daily Manobkantha video ("local youth invents new app"), Instagram coverage, and more.
- Media (confirmed): The Quoted (QuotedBD) 11-02 posted a video, "you can now use BD Train Tracking to see live trains and 3D routes", 13k views and 298 likes. Jagonews 24 11-02 and 11-03 ran two back-to-back tutorial/roundup pieces, introducing it right after the official SMS as the first option. The article said "500k+ users and about 15k chat messages a day." The installs jumps of 11-02 and 11-05 (+78k, +82k) fall right before and after these articles.
- TikTok creators (partly confirmed): @bangladesh_railway_fan1 11-01 posted "use Bd train tracking to see live train locations", 11k views. @mricreating, @joy_robi_das, @its_jony_404 and other alt accounts also posted. The journalist account @saidulislam.sr (89k followers) 10-25 posted "see live locations of all Bangladesh trains for free", 277k views and 11.8k likes; 10-30 later posted another with 19k views. But whether the video promotes this app is unverified (the video shows up when searching "BD Train Tracking").
- In-app social mechanics (confirmed): "I'm Inside Train" lets you share your location with family, who receive a link and may install the app too. Each train has one chat room. Sharing location correctly earns reward points, and sharing wrongly gets accounts banned. These mechanics let every passenger bring in new users.
- Season / timing (speculative): copycat TikTok captions read "exams are over, time to go home" and "mom is taking the train home". Late October to early November is the post-exam homecoming travel peak. There is also the mid-October Durga Puja. No direct evidence.
- Paid acquisition: none found. Neither the Meta Ad Library (which only tracks listed advertisers) nor the TikTok Ad Library shows it. Its own Facebook page has only 1 followers. It appears to buy almost no ads.
4. Why users stay and pay
- High-frequency need: train delays are normal in Bangladesh, and people waiting for or picking up passengers need to know where the train is. Official SMS costs money and is text only; this app is free and has a map and chat.
- Network effect: locations come from passengers on board, so the more people with the app on each train, the more accurate it is, and the leader keeps getting stronger. The top-liked review (56 people found it helpful) complains precisely that "location permission isn't requested by default and many forget to turn on sharing", showing that data density is what users care about most.
- Monetization: ads (Play marks it "contains ads") + subscriptions. The website lists ৳20/month, ৳40/March, ৳65/June, ৳90/year (ad-free, advanced notifications, etc.), and Play in-app purchases at $0.19–0.69. The website also has a "donate to keep the servers running" option and a shop selling travel goods. Unit prices are very low, so revenue per user is thin and it relies on volume. Revenue has not been disclosed.
5. Differentiation
Compared with similar products like TrainKothai, the product form is nearly the same (crowdsourced GPS + timetable). The differences are:
- Early start, large scale. Only the leader gets the accuracy that comes with data density.
- Social layer: a chat room for each train (about 15k messages a day, per Jagonews citing the founder's data) + sharing with family.
- 3D map, a selling point that suits short videos. The late-October Facebook/TikTok wave was driven by exactly this.
- Fast iteration (arrival alarm, lock-screen alarm, three versions in a week).
Of these differences, what actually made it take off is the network effect from scale and social features, plus the 3D view, a selling point that works in short videos. The features themselves are not hard to copy. TrainKothai is already building 3D, and TrainKothay and TrainTracking BD are copycats that only entered in October.
6. How visible it is
- Revenue isn't public, X search turns up nothing (x-radar: 0 posts in 60 days), and no English-language media or tech-circle big accounts have written about it.
- It has already broken out locally in Bangladesh: two Jagonews24 pieces, The Quoted, Daily Manobkantha, Facebook groups, and short videos.
- Copycats have already appeared (TrainKothay 10-24 on the store, TrainTracking BD with a name collision plus TikTok promotion, and Md Mehedi Hasan 10-17 teasing "BD Train Guide (Tracking)").
- Verdict: it's circulating in small circles. Specifically, it's already hot locally in Bangladesh, and nobody internationally knows about it.
7. What others can borrow
- Look for public-transport gaps where official data exists but is closed or paywalled (common in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa for rail and long-distance buses), and fill them with passenger-crowdsourced GPS. A chat room per vehicle and one-tap location sharing with family both serve retention and acquisition at once.
- Use the generic term locals actually search for as the app name ("BD Train Tracking"), add a visual hook that suits short videos (the 3D map), and hand distribution to local media and Facebook/TikTok.
- Local ability to pay is low, so pricing should use the local currency and very low entry points (৳20/month), with ads as the main revenue source.
8. Still unclear
- The real launch date (estimated early 2026) and the early cold-start tactics.
- How much of the installs come from Saudi, UAE, and Malaysian expats versus Bangladesh itself (our library has no Bangladesh store).
- Whether the video by @saidulislam.sr, with 277k views, promotes this app.
- Whether the high rating growth (600–800 new ratings a day, about 2–3% of that day's new installs) comes from in-app prompts and reward points, or is organic. Not verified.
- Revenue scale; subscription conversion rate.
