A food AI effects app's 7 days: how Vietnamese small shop AI Syrup bought 34k installs, and why it stopped
What it is A food-themed AI photo filter and photo-to-video app: upload a photo of a dish, and AI redraws it as a mood image or turns it into a short video. It earns money by selling coins.
Why it blew up It didn't catch fire on its own. 10-28 to 11-02 it ran concentrated paid acquisition in Indonesia, Thailand and similar markets, climbed the category charts, and got 34k installs with only 30 ratings. After the spend stopped, growth went flat. The food theme just made the ad creatives look fresh.
CHow you could follow A team that already has an AI effects backend and paid acquisition chops can treat this as one more theme in a multi-app portfolio: pick a theme that's trending on local TikTok and that big effects apps don't cover yet, spend a small budget for a few days in low-cost stores like Indonesia, Thailand or Brazil, then check the Top Grossing chart before deciding whether to scale.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-21 · 11-07 installs 34,856
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
EverLuu, a small studio in Ho Chi Minh City, took an AI effects template it had already built, re-skinned it around "food + lifestyle mood," and in late October spent a few days on heavy ads in Indonesia and Thailand. It got 34k installs in a week and reached the Entertainment Top Grossing chart in Indonesia. Once the ads stopped, growth stopped too. It isn't a success story so much as a clearly written manual for the "AI template + coins" business: how it scales, how much it earns, and where it gets stuck.
Five-star review says "it won't open"
Oct 29 this morning, an Indonesian user gave AI Syrup five stars on Google Play with a single line: "kenapa aplikasinya tidak bisa dibuka" (why won't the app open). Two days earlier another five-star review said "hrs pakai koin" (you have to use coins), and on Nov 4 another five-star review was just the word "berbayar" (paid).
The app has 8 written reviews in total, 7 of them clustered between 10-27 and 10-29, right before it started growing. Ratings are 25 five-star and 4 one-star, with nothing in between (Google Play, 11-06). The five-star reviews are either very short ("bagus", "aplikasiny memuaskan") or complaints. One-star reviews say "bnyk iklan" (too many ads) and "gak berguna" (useless). Seeding a few good reviews before launch is a common small-studio move, and there's no way to verify from outside whether these are too. One number stands out, though: 34k installs produced only 30 ratings.
What it is
Upload a photo, pick a style, and AI repaints it into mood images like "golden dusk backyard barbecue," "Japanese film summer watermelon," or "Turkish ice cream." Or pick a template for hot pot, sushi, desserts or Western food and turn a photo into a short video of a few seconds. The Indonesian store page one-liner reads "Unggah foto Anda & hasilkan seni makanan berbasis AI" (upload your photo and generate AI food art).
No account sign-up and no ads. It makes money by selling coins: in the Indonesian store the price runs Rp 54,000 to Rp 1,790,000 (about $3.3–$110), and the US store lists $2.99–$99.99 (Google Play, 11-06). Released Oct 21, updated Nov 2 to 1.0.2.

Source: Google Play installs and category charts, 10-29 to 11-06. The install count on the Play listing updates with a lag, so the ranking climbs first and the install number jumps a few days later.
The curve goes like this: three days of climbing, a peak, then a cliff. From 11-03 to 11-06 it added only about 1,400 in total. A product that spreads organically doesn't look like this. This is a promotion that ran its course.
Where users came from: bought
I didn't get its ad creatives, and I didn't verify which platforms it ran on or how much it spent. But three things all point to paid acquisition (inference, high confidence):
- Installs-to-ratings ratio of 0.09%. Organic users who find an app on their own usually leave ratings at a rate of 0.5–2%.
- No outside chatter at all. Searching "AI Syrup" on TikTok returns syrup and drink content. There are zero posts on X in nearly 30 days, and no media or blog has mentioned it.
- The predecessor did the same. The same company's AI Sweeter (portrait effects), released in June, now has 334k installs and over 10k ratings, and a third-party estimate puts its October revenue at $5K–$24K (AppGazers). Its reviews include "fake app, i want a refund, this is false advertising" along with plenty of borderline comments. It's reasonable to infer that its ad creatives leaned exaggerated and borderline.
Switching to food made the creatives much cleaner and also avoided the review risk that comes with portrait effects. Indonesian TikTok already has a large pool of food effect videos under the label "Efek AI keren," such as @melani_margareta's "Epic Fried Chicken" with 45k views and @mimih_nings's "AI Giant Food" with 80k views (TikTok, 2026-09 to 10). Those videos use the effects built into TikTok and CapCut and have nothing to do with AI Syrup, but they show local users already understand the idea of turning food photos into fun AI videos, so the ads don't have to explain it from scratch.
Where the money comes from, and how much
In-app purchases for coins. Entertainment Top Grossing charts in Indonesia, Thailand and Brazil have low entry barriers, and a few tens of thousands of installs can get an app into the top 150, so "charted on Top Grossing" only means someone is paying, not that there's much money. AppGazers estimates its 10/2–11/1 revenue at under $5K, but that window is mostly before the surge, so it's not a strong reference. A better benchmark is the predecessor: a same-model app that ran for 5 months and reached 330k installs was earning roughly five figures in USD per month (estimate).
The company's method is a portfolio: the same AI effects backend and the same coin paywall, with each app getting a different theme, a different package name, and a disposable domain (aisyrup.top, aianimate.xyz). The official site everluu.xyz is a single vague page of "Road to AGI" copy. The contact email in the privacy policy is a gmail address.

Among recently launched new apps doing "photo to video / AI effects," AI Syrup ranks around #17 on 7-day new installs, mid-pack. It's the only generative food entertainment app I can see, but the broader category is already crowded, with plenty of Vietnamese studios in it (TOMODEV, LOTUS HUMAN RESOURCES and others).
Is the food theme why it grew?
Mostly not. The growth timing lines up exactly with the paid acquisition window, growth stopped when spend stopped, there's no word of mouth, and the scale isn't larger than general-theme apps from the same period. The theme's role was to give ad creatives freshness and avoid borderline review flags, and to ride the existing trend on Indonesian TikTok. There's no data showing food themes convert or pay better.
If it were you
C. The playbook is worth learning: one template backend, multiple themes, a portfolio of apps; pick stores where paid acquisition is cheap and Top Grossing entry is low, like Indonesia, Thailand or Brazil; spend for a few days and let the grossing curve decide whether to scale. But AI Syrup itself died once spend stopped, its revenue is small, several general template apps have already hit a million installs, and the real competition is the free TikTok and CapCut sitting on users' phones.
- Who it suits: small teams that already have an AI image or video generation backend and a coin paywall, have run Meta or TikTok ads, and track ROI daily. Treat it as one more theme in the portfolio, where the cost is a set of creatives plus a small test budget.
- Who it doesn't suit: people starting from zero who want to build a product around "AI food effects" alone; people who have never run ads (apps like this have no organic traffic and depend entirely on buying it); people who expect users to stay and subscribe long term.
- How to do it: don't build a general template. Pick a theme that's trending on local TikTok but missing from the big effects apps, and make each app about one thing. Before launch, check view counts on similar effect videos on TikTok, and only build when they're in the tens of thousands to millions. Monetize with coins, with the first tier set around $3. The reviews' "won't open", "too many ads" and "you have to pay coins" are ready-made negatives, so fix stability and paywall clarity first.
- How to acquire users: buy through Meta and TikTok, with before-and-after creatives of "an ordinary dish photo → a few-second AI video." Local dishes (Indonesian fried chicken, Thai tom yum, Brazilian barbecue) fit better than sushi or Western food. Spend 3–5 days on a small budget and watch whether the category Top Grossing chart moves.
- When to move early: windows for these template apps are measured in months. Every time TikTok or CapCut launches a free version of the same effect, a theme can die, so pick your theme and go during the few weeks it's trending locally.
- Signs you've got it wrong: ① the test budget is spent and the app doesn't break into the top 200 on Top Grossing, or paid revenue doesn't cover half the ad spend; ② after spend stops, daily installs fall to a few hundred, as AI Syrup's did; ③ within a month or two, TikTok or CapCut releases a free version of the theme you picked.

Why AI Syrup (com.gourmet.syrup) broke out
Store: Google Play | Developer: EverLuu Technology Company Limited (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) | Store launch 2026-10-21 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
AI Syrup is a reskin by a small Vietnamese studio, EverLuu, of its earlier AI Sweeter, using the same "AI effects template + coin IAP" model but with a "food / lifestyle mood" theme. Its growth came from a concentrated paid acquisition wave between 10-28 and 11-02, aimed at Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, plus Brazil and Poland), not organic breakout: 34,856 installs against only 30 ratings, and no natural TikTok or X content. After the spend stopped, growth essentially stopped (about +1.4k from 11-03 to 11-06), and its chart positions kept sliding. The food theme is rare among its peers, but it's a hook for ad creative, not the reason it took off.

Source: googleplay library app_day / chart_rank; estimated daily installs from AppstoreSpy (app_day_ext): 10-31 about 2.1k/day, 11-01 to 11-02 about 12k/day, 11-03 about 4.7k, 11-05 about 34.
How to read this table:
- Its Top Free rank climbed steadily from 10-29 to 10-31, the same wave that drove the jump in installs (11-02). Play's install counter updates with a delay, so rank led and install totals followed. After 11-02 it dropped off all Top Free charts, with daily installs falling from tens of thousands to a few hundred or a little over a thousand. This is the shape of a promotion that ran its course, not the long tail of organic spread.
- The card's claim that it "only launched in Indonesia" is inaccurate: the US store detail page opens (
app_snap.detail_cc = us), and during the same period it charted in Malaysia, Thailand, Brazil, and Poland. Most payments, however, came from Indonesia, Thailand, and Brazil. - Revenue: its best Entertainment Top Grossing rank was #108 in Indonesia, #99 in Thailand, and #167 in Brazil. The bar for those regional grossing charts is low, which points to some paying users, but not at a large scale. AppGazers estimates revenue of 10/2–11/1 under $5K and downloads under 5K, mostly from a window before the breakout (AppGazers).
2. Where users came from: the evidence found
- Paid acquisition (inference is fairly strong, but ad creative was not directly retrieved)
- Rating-to-install ratio: 30 ratings against 34,856 installs, about 0.09% (live pull via google-play-scraper, 11-06). Organically grown apps in the same category usually land between 0.5 and 2%. The volume was bought, or pulled in through incentives, not found by users on their own.
- The curve is "climb for 3 days, peak, then cliff" (see the table above).
- No organic content: a TikHub search on TikTok for "AI Syrup" and "aisyrup" returned only syrup, drinks, and AI fruit short dramas, none related to this app; x-radar found 30 posts in the last 0 days for "AI Syrup" and "EverLuu"; Jina / Exa found no media or blog coverage.
- Our Meta, TikTok (Europe), and Google ad libraries don't track this developer, so a lack of results there doesn't mean no spend. Scraping the Facebook ad library web page directly also failed to render. Which platforms it ran on and how much it spent remain unverified.
- Sister app experience and creative style: the earlier AI Sweeter (com.ai.glamour.animate, listed 2026-06-03) has 331,316 installs and 10,533 ratings, and AppGazers estimates October revenue of $5K–$23.9K (AppGazers). Its reviews include "fake app, i want a refund, this is false advertising", "sex", "good when I'm horny", and "Saxsy" (google-play-scraper, 9–October). That suggests this developer's ad creative may lean suggestive and overpromising. AI Syrup's food theme likely makes its creative much cleaner, but the playbook is the same: flashy AI effect video ads to pull people in, then sell coins once they're in.
- Store reviews may have been seeded early: 8 written reviews cluster between 10-27 and 10-29, before volume picked up. Among them, the 5-star ones are very short ("bagus", "aplikasiny memuaskan"), and 25 5-star reviews sit against 4 1-star ones, so the ratings split to both ends. The 1-star complaints say "bnyk iklan" (too many ads; the app is listed as ad-free, so this may mean cross-promo ads), "hrs pakai koin" (requires coins), "berbayar" (paid), "gak berguna" (useless), and "tidak bisa dibuka" (won't open). Unverified whether these are fake, but the pattern looks like the common small-shop trick of seeding a few good reviews at launch.
- The theme hit a local traffic trend: TikTok's Indonesian side already has many "Efek AI keren"-style AI food effect videos, such as @melani_margareta's "Epic Fried Chicken" with 45k views and @mimih_nings's "AI Giant Food" with 80k views (TikHub, 2026-09/10). That shows Indonesian users already understand the idea of turning food photos into fun AI videos, which makes ad creative easier to get working. However, these videos use the effects built into TikTok / CapCut, and none mention AI Syrup.
3. Developer: a Vietnamese AI effects studio
- The privacy policy lists a registered address in Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon Ward, Nguyen Cong Tru street, No. 95, floor 1, with a contact email on gmail (novabit99@) (aisyrup.top/privacy.html).
- Each app uses its own one-off domain: aisyrup.top and aianimate.xyz. The official site everluu.xyz is generic "road to AGI" template copy with no product information.
- Both apps have been live for 2026 years and share the same structure: AI image / video effect templates, no accounts, coin IAP at $1.99/$2.99–$99.99. In the same library's batch of new "photo-to-video template" apps, several other Vietnamese companies appear too (TOMODEV JSC, LOTUS HUMAN RESOURCES JSC, etc.), so this is a mature reskin playbook for going global.

In the Google Play library, among new apps listed ≤120 days with 'photo-to-video / AI effect / AI filter' in the description, AI Syrup ranks #17 (34,652) by 7-day growth. It isn't at the top of this batch, just mid-pack.
5. What the differentiation is, and whether it explains the breakout
- Differentiation: it packages generic AI photo/video templates as a 'food + lifestyle vibe' theme: golden-hour backyard barbecue, Japanese film summer watermelon, Turkish ice cream, plus hotpot, sushi, dessert and Western food video templates. Among a pile of template apps built around portraits, couples and transformations, this theme is genuinely rare. We found no second food-themed generative entertainment app in the library.
- Is that why it grew? Mostly not. Growth tracks the paid acquisition window closely: stop spending and growth stops; organic content and word of mouth are zero; and its scale isn't bigger than same-category apps in generic themes at the time. The theme seems to serve as fresh ad creative that avoids portrait-effect creative fatigue and the risk of borderline-content review, while riding the existing 'AI food effect' trend on Indonesian TikTok. Whether the theme improves conversion or paying users, no data shows.
6. What to take away
- Matrix reskinning: the same AI effect template backend and coin paywall, each app gets a different theme (sweet / portrait swapped for food / lifestyle), a one-off domain, and a new package name, then they're launched in waves. The predecessor reportedly reached $5K–$24K a month (AppGazers estimate).
- Pick cheap-acquisition stores with low Top Grossing bars (Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil). A few tens of thousands of installs can push it into the top 150 of the category Top Grossing, then the grossing curve decides whether to keep spending.
- Match the theme to the AI effects currently trending on local TikTok, so the paid creative lines up with what users already recognize.
VII. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: almost nobody knows about it. No press coverage, 0 posts on X, no organic TikTok content, revenue undisclosed; only auto-generated aggregator pages like AppGazers, AppBrain and APKPure.
- Copycats: none found specifically copying 'food-themed AI video'. But it is itself one of many copies of the 'generic photo-to-video template app' (Funkedenic, CrocoTech, Lavish Food, SecureVault and others were doing the same at the time).
VIII. Unknowns
- Specific ad channels (Meta / TikTok / Google UAC / incentivized walls) and spend are unverified. Our ad library doesn't track this one, and we didn't pull the Facebook Ad Library web view.
- How many of the 30 ratings are incentivized or fake is unverified.
- Whether the growth stop was a deliberate pause, ROI that stopped working, or a move to iOS or the next sibling app is unclear. An iOS app named 'AI Syrup' (id 6756914547,2026-01, sketch-style video) currently can't be found via lookup, and its relationship to this one is unverified.
- Real revenue. AppGazers' estimate window predates the breakout, so its reference value is limited.
