# 37 installs in two and a half months, 25k within 90 days of paid launch: how the hairstyle app HairStylo was bought

**What it is** Upload a selfie and AI shows you hairstyles, hair colors, and makeup matched to your face shape. You hit a subscription wall right away, weekly or annual, up to $69.99.

**Why it took off** The product is the same as dozens of rivals. The growth was bought: starting in mid-October it ran video ads showing the effect, across English-speaking markets, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and squeezed into several low-barrier beauty category charts.

**C** **How you could play it** Don't build another generic hairstyle swapper. A team that knows paid acquisition could take its "shell + paywall + Meta ads" template and look for photo-try-on categories that aren't crowded yet, or focus on the Black hairstyles it doesn't cover, and offer one free generation up front while making cancellation clear.

Grade C: AI hairstyle swap apps on Play are already crowded with dozens of near-identical clones. The top player is dozens of times bigger, and many free web tools and general LLMs can substitute. Its growth is entirely bought, and estimated revenue is under $10K a month. You can learn the distribution playbook here, but following this category isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

HairStylo is an AI hairstyle and hair-color app on Google Play. It launched at the end of July and had only 37 installs by mid-October. Paid ads started around October 12, and within 25 days cumulative installs reached 90k. It also took #1 in South Africa's Beauty Top Free chart. The product is almost identical to dozens of rivals. It differs in only two ways: it spends heavily on acquisition, and it charges from the first open. Anyone building an app can see clearly how a "shell + paywall + paid acquisition" template runs here. As another hairstyle app, though, it isn't worth it.

### October 12, two 1-star reviews from South Africa

On the morning of Oct 12, 2026, a South African user gave HairStylo 1 stars on Google Play: "The ads are very deceptive. The ads show the app being used just fine, but as soon as I open it, it asks me to pay. One of the worst apps I've used so far." That same evening, another South African user also gave it 1 stars, with just one line: "Racist. There isn't a single Black person in the app, so it's boring."

A day earlier, on October 11, someone asked: "Why not just say up front that it isn't free? Why make people download it before they learn it costs £63.99 a year?"

Also on October 12, HairStylo entered the top 10 of the beauty free charts in Australia, the UK, and Vietnam, and the top 100 in Germany (per AppInsider chart records). The bad reviews and the chart entries landed on the same day for the same reason: that's when paid acquisition started.

### What it is

The store page describes a three-step flow: take or upload one front-facing photo, let the AI analyze your face shape, then swipe through hairstyles, hair colors, and makeup as they would look on you. The taglines are "Don't risk a bad cut" and "Walk into the salon with confidence."

Opening the app shows the paywall right away. In-app prices run $9.99 to $69.99 (Google Play, 11-06). Per reviews, the options are weekly and annual subscriptions. No ads inside. One user wrote on October 22: "I started the free trial, changed my mind, and couldn't find how to cancel. This app is a trap."

The developer is NetPilot, with AppGoblin listing the UAE as its location. Two other apps under the same developer account are Antivirus Threat Block (50k+) and Wifi Expert (5k+), both utilities. This isn't a beauty team. It's a small publisher that makes whatever category looks like an opening. The website behind the app, hairstylostudio.com, shows an empty Laravel page, and its privacy policy is hosted on Google Docs. Inside the app is a typical setup: Apphud handles subscriptions and the paywall, and AppsFlyer plus the Facebook SDK handle paid-acquisition attribution (per AppGoblin SDK scan, 10-15).

### How the installs came in

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-18 | 8 | Third-party estimate |
| 2026-10-12 | 37 | Third-party estimates, two and a half months after launch |
| 2026-10-19 | About 30k | Third-party estimate |
| 2026-10-22 | About 49k | About +12k on the peak day (estimated) |
| 2026-10-29 | 67,090 | Google Play |
| 2026-11-06 | 90,670 | Google Play, 7 days +15k |

Almost nobody installed it in the two and a half months after launch. Volume only picked up after October 12. From there HairStylo charted country by country, in order: 10-13 Canada and Thailand, 10-16 Saudi Arabia, 10-21 Russia, then Mexico, India, Indonesia, and Turkey (AppInsider). It pushed English-speaking markets, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East all at once. Organic growth doesn't look like this.

The clearest evidence comes from users themselves. The first review's line "the app in the ad works fine" shows it ran video ads demonstrating the effect. The app includes the Facebook SDK and AppsFlyer, and in October the developer created a Facebook page called "HairStylo AI" with only a dozen or so likes, posting Reels and "Install now" links straight to Play. So it's safe to conclude this was Meta paid acquisition. How much was spent and the ROI can't be seen from the outside.

Growth slowed after the spike: 10-19 to 10-27 averaged about 4,600 installs per day, and 10-29 to 11-06 averaged about 2,900 per day (Google Play, estimated).

### Discount the charts

"#1 in South Africa's Beauty Free" sounds loud, but the apps ranked #2 to #10 on the same chart are beauty camera apps, Fresha, Booksy, and Avon (Google Play, 11-06), a low bar. It sits at #13 to #15 on the beauty free charts in the US, Canada, Poland, the Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. Many countries show identical ranks, which looks more like one aggregate chart reused across regions than real sales in each market.

The "#18" finishes on the beauty Top Grossing charts (India, Singapore, the Philippines, Nigeria, and about 20 other countries) are even more inflated. Those countries' beauty grossing charts hold only thirty-odd apps in total, and the US beauty grossing chart has 10, where it doesn't appear. All that shows is that someone is paying. AppGoblin estimates monthly revenue under $10K and about 33K monthly active users, unverified.

The ratings also need discounting. There are 116 ratings, with a star split of 1 1-star at 25, 4 2-star at 19, and 5 5-star at 70. The 2- and 3-star counts are both 0 (11-06), though one 2-star review is visible in the comments. Between 10-31 and 11-02, the 4-star count grew from 7 to 19 in two days. Several 5-star praises are one-word short reviews like "alihamissi," "Inclusive," and "Exceptional." That pattern looks like the app asks "are you satisfied?" in-app and sends only the happy ones to rate it, or it may be fake (inferred, unverified). Another site logs its rating over the past 4 weeks down to 3.3 stars.

### Where the money comes from

Hard paywall, high-priced subscriptions, no ads. The cheap installs from South Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East fill the numbers and charts. The users who will actually pay $60 for multiple years are mainly in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Whether the business makes money depends entirely on whether trial-to-paid conversion and refund rates can cover acquisition costs.

Reading the reviews, this step isn't going smoothly: out of 29 reviews, 18 are 1-star, and they all complain about the same three things: "nothing is free," "the ads are misleading," and "I can't cancel." One 2-star review hits the mark: "Good idea, wrong execution. Other free AI tools are much faster and work much better. Having to re-upload my photo every time I want to try a new hairstyle makes no sense." (10-26)

### Who it's competing with

AI hairstyle apps are already a crowded category on Google Play, and HairStylo is the smallest of the group.

| Product | Scale (Google Play, around 11-06) | Versus HairStylo |
|---|---|---|
| Sorapix: AI Hair Changer | Launched 2026-04, 3.14M installs, +7k in 430 days | Same template, 35 times bigger |
| AI Hairstyle Try On & Color(Vit Corp.) | Launched 2026-05, 2.68M | Peers |
| Beautix | Launched 2026-06, 2.53M | Peers |
| HairGenie | Launched 2026-05, 1.8M, #140 on India's Top Grossing | Also has subscription revenue |
| Hairisi | Launched 2026-08, 670k, #1 on Mexico's beauty free chart | Spanish localization, ads plus low-priced in-app purchases |
| Tressy | Launched 2026-03, 500k, 7 days +390k | Growing much faster |
| FaceLab, YouCam Makeup | 88M, 370M | an established all-round beauty app, hairstyle swap is just one feature |
| Glowify(iOS) | 13k US-store ratings, 4.74 stars | top subscription on iOS |
| Canva, hairstyleai.ai, assorted web tools | — | Free, no install needed |
| ChatGPT / Gemini generate images directly | — | Free, and reviews already say so |

Feature-wise they're all the same: analyze face shape, recommend hairstyles, change hair color, try on makeup. HairStylo's only difference is monetization: most products in this factory category run "watch ads + $3.99 in-app purchases," while it charges upfront, with yearly plans around $60–70. That squeezes more out of each install, but it also brings bad reviews faster. It only works because it spends money on paid acquisition, not because of this one difference.

### The part it does poorly

One South African user review is worth a closer look: "There isn't a single Black person in the app." On Oct 31, another 4-star review said: "You should add every hairstyle." HairStylo's paid acquisition is cheapest and its charting is highest in South Africa, yet its hairstyle library doesn't seem to cover Black hairstyles well (inferred from reviews; not verified in the app).

The gap is real, but others are already filling it: on the web, VEED, OpenArt and Sketchto offer free "AI hairstyle" and "Afro hairstyle" filters, and on iOS there's Nora, built specifically for Black women. On Reddit's r/BlackHair, someone asked: "Is there an AI app where I can put my photo in and try braids first? I need to see the result before I make a big change." Demand exists, but so do plenty of free alternatives.

### If it were you

**The verdict** : Don't build another generic AI hairstyle-swap app. The category already has dozens of near-identical apps on Play; the leader is many times bigger than HairStylo, and countless free web tools and general AI models can substitute for it. What's worth learning from HairStylo is its distribution playbook, not this category.

**Who it suits** : small teams that already run Meta app-install ads and can calculate trial-to-paid conversion and refund rates. Using this template to find the next "snap a photo, see the result" category that isn't crowded yet (beards, brows, tattoos, nails) is more promising than queuing up in hairstyles.

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie devs with no paid-ads experience. This category has almost no organic traffic: searching "hairstylo" on TikTok only turns up unrelated clippers with the same name, nobody has mentioned it on X in nearly 60 days, and there's no press coverage. Its 90k installs are all bought.

**How to do it** : if you insist on hairstyles, do the part HairStylo gets wrong: build specifically for Black hairstyles (braids, locs, Afro, coils), starting with Black women in South Africa, Nigeria and the US. Give one free generation before the paywall so people see the result before paying; let users upload a photo once and try many styles; and put the cancel-subscription option in plain sight. Those three fixes address the three complaints most common in its reviews.

**How to acquire users** : Meta Reels video ads, with creatives showing before-and-after of "the same face in five hairstyles." Test clicks and retention first in cheap-install markets like South Africa and Nigeria, and rely on the US and UK for paying users. Pair this with TikTok hairstylists who braid hair and use the app to preview looks for clients.

**Window** : there isn't a clear one. General models generating images keep getting better, and "change my hairstyle" is one step away from becoming a free button, so the later you start, the harder it is to charge. If you want to test it, finish a round before Q1 of 2027.

**Signs you've misread this** : (1) HairStylo's installs re-accelerate after late November and it enters the US Beauty top-grossing chart, which would show that a high paywall plus paid acquisition can pay back in English-speaking markets; (2) it or a Black-hairstyle-focused version holds a South African or Nigerian top-grossing chart spot for two weeks or more. Conversely, if its daily new installs keep falling to a few hundred after November, paid acquisition probably isn't paying back and the developer has likely stopped spending.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **Meta paid video ads** : app integrates Facebook SDK + AppsFlyer (AppGoblin); review: "The ad is very deceiving… Show the application to be working" (10-12); a recall record shows a Facebook page created in October with only 18 likes running Reels with an "Install now" button (not re-verified this time); the metaads library doesn't track this advertiser

- **Confirmed** **Multi-country push to climb low-barrier Beauty charts** : AppInsider timeline: 10-12 entered the top 10 free Beauty in AU, GB, VN, then CA, TH, SA, RU, MX, IN, ID, TR followed in turn; free Beauty in South Africa #1 (same chart includes beauty camera apps, Booksy, etc.)

- Inferred **In-app rating prompts** : star distribution 1★25, 2★0, 3★0, 4★19, 5★70; over 10-31 to 11-02, the 4★ count rose from 7 to 19; 5★ short reviews look like fake ones (alihamissi, Inclusive)

- **Confirmed** **ASO / multilingual store listing** : short description "AI Hairstyle & Hair Color Try-On"; store listings in Spanish and other languages

- Inferred **TikTok / X / press / creators** : TikHub and x-radar searches for hairstylo return nothing relevant; no press coverage

## Why HairStylo (com.hairstylo.app) got off the ground

> Google Play · Beauty · Developer NetPilot · listed 2026-07-27 · research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It has nothing unique at the product level. It's a standard playbook: **a reskinned AI hairstyle shell + hard paywall + Meta paid acquisition** . It had almost zero installs for two and a half months after launch (10-12 total only 37), started paid spend around 10-12, and **reached 90k installs in 25 days** . The charts it hit (#1 free Beauty in South Africa, #13 free Beauty in the US) have very low barriers. Revenue is probably modest (AppGoblin estimates <$10k/month), and whether it pays back depends on whether high-priced subscription conversion can cover acquisition costs.

### 1. What it is

Upload a selfie, AI analyzes your face shape, then swipe through hairstyles, hair colors and makeup looks. You hit a paywall right away: in-app purchases range $9.99–$69.99 (googleplay library app_snap). Reviews mention "£63.99 a year," and some users say they started a trial but couldn't find how to cancel (reviews 2026-10-11, 10-22). No ads (ad_supported=False).

- Tech stack (AppGoblin SDK scan, 2026-10-15): **Apphud** (subscriptions and paywall), **AppsFlyer** (paid acquisition attribution), **Facebook SDK** , Firebase. A classic "paid acquisition + subscription" setup. The backend domain is hairstylostudio.com, and its homepage title is "Hairs - Laravel," a bare Laravel site; the privacy policy is hosted on Google Docs.

- Developer NetPilot: AppGoblin lists them in the UAE 🇦🇪. The same developer account also publishes Antivirus Threat Block (50K+) and Wifi Expert (5K+) (Play developer page). It's a small publisher of utility apps, not a beauty team.

### 2. Growth data

| Date | Total installs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-18 | 8 | AppstoreSpy estimate (app_day_ext) |
| 2026-10-12 | 37 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-19 | 29,994 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-22 | 48,749 (about +11.8k that day, the peak) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-27 | 67,071 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-29 | 67,090 | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-06 | 90,670 (7 days +15k) | googleplay library |

- The inflection point is **around 10-12** : AppInsider's timeline shows that 10-12 it entered the top 10 free Beauty charts in Australia, the UK and Vietnam at the same time, and reached #100 in Germany; 10-13 it entered Canada and Thailand, 10-16 Saudi Arabia, 10-21 Russia; 10-27 and 10-28 it reached the top 100 top-grossing Beauty charts in 9 countries. This is a simultaneous multi-country push; organic growth wouldn't look like this.

- After the surge, growth slowed: 10-19→10-27 averaged about 4.6k a day; 10-29→11-06 averaged about 2.9k a day (googleplay library).

- Rating: 4.1 dropped to 3.94, with rating count 71→116. Distribution: 1★ 25, 2★ 0, 3★ 0, 4★ 19, 5★ 70 (11-06 app_snap). **2-star and 3-star reviews are both 0, a polarized distribution** ; also, over two days 10-31 to 11-02, 4★ rose from 7 to 19 while 1★ fell from 14 to 12. This looks like in-app rating prompts (asking only happy users to rate), or possibly paid five-star reviews; unverified. AppInsider recorded the rating dropping to 3.3★ over the last 4 weeks.

- Review content (googleplay reviews, samples almost all from South Africa): since 10-08, 1★ reviews make up the majority, complaining mainly about three things: "ads are deceptive, it charges as soon as you open it," "nothing is free," and "no Black hairstyles." A few 5★ reviews are one-word praise like "alihamissi," "Inclusive," "Exceptional," which are low-credibility.

#### Discount the charts

- Free Beauty #1 in South Africa: on the same chart, #2–10 are beauty camera apps, Fresha, Booksy, Avon and the like, a very low bar (chart_rank za BEAUTY free 2026-11-06).

- Free Beauty #13–18 in the US, and around #15 in Poland, the Netherlands, Singapore and others: rankings are nearly identical across many countries, looking more like a global aggregate chart applied to each country (why.md notes that small-country category charts are often the same aggregate chart).

- Top-grossing Beauty #17–20 (in about 20 countries): these countries' Beauty top-grossing charts have **only 31–33 rows in total** , with the top 3 being Booksy Biz, VisionForge, Perfect365; the US Beauty top-grossing chart has 10 rows and it isn't on it. So "top 18 grossing" only shows some paying users, not large revenue. AppGoblin estimates monthly revenue at <$10k and MAU at about 33k.

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Meta paid acquisition (almost certain)** : the app integrates the Facebook SDK and AppsFlyer (AppGoblin); a user review states it directly: "The ad is very deceiving… Show the application to be working. And then when I open the app it's ask me for payments" (10-12). During recall, we found the developer's Facebook page "HairStylo AI", created in October with only 18 likes, which posts Reels video ads and "Install now" links straight to the Play Store (recall record; not re-opened to verify this time). Our metaads library doesn't track this advertiser, which doesn't mean they aren't spending.

2. **Multi-country push to climb category charts** : starting 10-12, AU, GB, VN, DE, CA, TH, SA, RU, MX, IN, ID and TR entered the charts in turn (AppInsider); English-speaking, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern markets were pushed together. It picked the Beauty category, which has a low bar, so charting brought some organic exposure.

3. **ASO** : the short description is "AI Hairstyle & Hair Color Try-On. Find the best match for your face shape!", with store listings in Spanish and other languages (Jina search surfaced pages for es_GT, uz and others), but keyword stuffing is weaker than in similar apps (Hairisi, for example, packs keywords into its package name).

4. **Rating prompt** : star distribution is polarized, with the middle tier at 0. That fits the "ask if they're happy first, only then send them to the store rating" pattern (inferred, unverified).

5. **No content or creators** : a TikHub search for "hairstylo" only returns unrelated hair clippers and barber accounts with the same name; x-radar shows 60 days and 0 posts; no media coverage. The only results are store-data pages like AppBrain, AppGoblin, Similarweb, AppInsider, and MRRBeam.

**Where the money comes from** : a hard paywall, weekly plus annual subscriptions, up to $69.99, no ads. Cheap paid acquisition in South Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East drives installs and chart rank, while the paying users are mostly in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Payback depends entirely on trial-to-paid conversion and refund rates. Reviews suggest many people leave as soon as they open it, and some complain they can't cancel, so refund and bad-review risk is high.

### 4. Competitors (same thing: AI hairstyle / hair color try-on)

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from HairStylo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FaceLab(Lyrebird Studio) | Android | 2020 | 88.3M installs, #30 in US Photography top-grossing | Established all-purpose face-swap app; hairstyles are just one feature |
| Sorapix: AI Hair Changer(NXL AI Solutions) | Android | 2026-04-24 | 3.14M, 7 days +430k (googleplay library) | Same template, 35× its scale |

| HairGenie(FuMaoMao) | Android | 2026-05-21 | 1.8M, #140 on the India top grossing chart | Also shows subscription revenue signals |
| Hairisi(CrocoTech) | Android | 2026-08-08 | 674k, #1 free Beauty in Mexico | Monetizes with ads plus cheap in-app purchases, localized for Latin America; HairStylo uses a hard paywall and high-priced subscriptions |

| Glowify(Flarial Interactive) | iOS | 2025-08-26 | US store rating count 13,126,4.74★ (iTunes lookup) | Top iOS subscription app, weekly around $9.99 |
| Hairstyle AI – Haircut Try On(PAO APPS) | iOS | 2025-09-18 | US: 238 ratings | iOS competitors |
| YouCam Makeup(Perfect Corp) | Android/iOS | 2014 | 370M installs | Major-brand all-round beauty app; hairstyle swap is one feature |
| Canva / CapCut / Adobe Firefly / hairstyleai.ai / haircutai.app | Web and big-company features | 2025–2026 | — | Free, nothing to install |
| ChatGPT / Gemini generate images directly | Big-company features | 2025 | — | Free, you can just write your own prompts; reviews already say "using any other free AI is much faster" (10-26) |

This library also has two more reports in the same category: Hairisi (play_com.hairstyle.tryon.haircolor.ai) and WantHair (play_com.ttmm3.wanthair).

**Bottom line** : there are dozens of similar apps in this niche. HairStylo sits in the **smallest** tier, with 90k installs, while the top apps have millions.

### 5. Differentiation

- There's no feature differentiation: "analyze face shape, recommend hairstyles, hair color, makeup" is standard across the category.

- The only real difference is the **monetization choice** . Factory-style apps like Hairisi use "ads plus $3.99 in-app purchases," while HairStylo uses "paywall on open, annual $63.99–69.99," with no ads. This earns more per install but polarizes reviews.

- That difference isn't why it broke out. It broke out through **paid acquisition** : in the 10-12 two and a half months before, the same product had only 37 installs.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public: no TrustMRR listing, nobody posting revenue; no media coverage; X shows 0 posts; nothing relevant on TikTok.

- It only appears on store-data aggregators like AppGoblin, AppInsider, MRRBeam, and Similarweb, so only people who look at the data will see it.

- Copycats: not really. It's already one of the copycats in this niche.

### 7. What to borrow

- The template "an AI image-generation API wrapped in a shell + Apphud paywall + AppsFlyer/Meta paid acquisition" has a short cycle from build to spend: launched late July, sat idle, started paid buying mid-October, and within 2 weeks it was on the category charts in a dozen-plus countries.

- To push installs, it picked **a low-barrier beauty category** , used cheap countries (South Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East) to stack rank, and relied on English-speaking markets for payments.

- Risks to note: the hard paywall plus exaggerated video ads drew "scam" complaints and refunds, and the rating dropped from 4.1 to a recent 3.3★ within a month. Anyone copying this should offer a free generation, add Black or curly hairstyles (South African reviews named this directly), and make cancellation clear.

### 8. Uncertain

- How much was spent on paid acquisition, in which countries, and at what ROAS: unknown. The metaads library doesn't track this advertiser.

- Actual revenue: a Top Grossing ranking doesn't say much; AppGoblin estimates <$10k/month, unverified.

- Whether there's an iOS version: a recall record says yes, but this iTunes search for "HairStylo" in us, za, and gb returned nothing. Unverified.

- The jump to 4★ and the middle star count at 0: whether it's a rating prompt or review farming is unverified.

- Growth is slowing. Whether paid spend will increase depends on the data from late November.
