"Your dad raised you for twenty years, and you call him a rice cooker?": a foul-mouthed AI rabbit selling English speaking lessons in Vietnam
What it is An AI English speaking practice app whose AI is a snarky rabbit. Say something wrong and it scolds you. Mainly used by Vietnamese people studying for IELTS or afraid to speak.
Why it took off "Get scolded by a rabbit for one wrong sentence" is a ready-made short-video bit. A group of newly created TikTok alt accounts filmed the same gag, and accounts with a few hundred followers hit a million views. Student creators promoting discount codes and pushing for reviews added fuel, and it took off in October.
AHow you could follow it In a country nobody has touched yet, build an AI speaking sparring partner with a snarky character written in the local language. Run 5–10 TikTok story alt accounts posting "wrong answer, get scolded" daily, plus student KOC discount codes, and launch by mid-January 2027.

Hala is an AI English speaking practice app built by an indie developer in Vietnam. Its features are similar to ELSA and Speak. What's different is the main character: a rabbit that scolds you in Vietnamese whenever you get a word wrong in English. The "scolded by a rabbit" bit was turned into a meme on Vietnamese TikTok by a group of accounts with a few hundred followers. The top video reached 2.41M views. The Android version launched in August, and in early November it added 15k installs in a week, reaching #60 on the Vietnam Google Play Education Top Grossing chart. The playbook is clear and can be copied to another country. The question is whether you can write scolding lines people want to share.
The girl who called her dad a rice cooker
On 2026 Oct 16, the TikTok account @nhyhalarabbit posted a video with a single line of caption: "con xin lỗi ba…" (sorry, Dad…). In the video, a girl practices with the app's rabbit, trying to say "my father is the best cook in the family," and says "my father is the best cooker." In English, cooker means a cooking appliance, and the one Vietnamese people know best is the rice cooker. The rabbit replies:
"ba m nuôi m 20 năm để m gọi ổng là cái nồi cơm điện hả" ——Your dad raised you for twenty years, and you call him a rice cooker?
This line was the most-liked comment, with 21k likes (the on-screen wording is taken from this quoted line, inferred). By Nov 6 the video had 2.41M views and 164k likes. The comments split in two: one kind was "I wrote my father is the best cooker too 😭"; the other was "What is this app, is it paid?"
Two weeks later, the same account posted "We usually say freeship…" with 1.18M views. This time the rabbit scolds: "You buy a 30,000 dong phone case and still want them to give you a whole ship (free ship)?" The top comment is "NÓI lại Coiiiiiiiiiiiii" (say that again!), with close to 10k likes.
The account had only 6 followers in Nov 4,174.
What it is
- Name: in the Vietnamese store it's called "Hala: Luyện Nói Tiếng Anh AI" (Hala: AI English Speaking Practice), English name Hala Rabbit: Practice Speaking. The iOS version launched on 2025 Apr 15, developer credited as Bui Khoi. The Android version launched on 2026 Aug 16.
- Features: conversations with an AI character, pronunciation and grammar correction, IELTS speaking topics, vocabulary flashcards. The store description says "from B1 to C2" and "whether you want 6.5 or 8.0 points."
- The interesting part: the App Store description promises learners "a safe, judgment-free space." On TikTok, what it sells is exactly being judged. A three-star review states the gap between product and video plainly: "The AI chat from TikTok, many people can't find it, you have to check in continuously before it shows up" (App Store Vietnam, 10-28). So the snarky rabbit isn't something you see right away (inferred).

At 50k installs it hit #60 on the Vietnam overall Top Grossing chart. That sounds like good money, but the Vietnam chart bar is low, so the rank doesn't translate to much in absolute dollars. Third-party estimator Peekly puts it at about $5k/month, which we can't verify. Other countries have almost no users: 393 ratings on the US App Store, 76 in Indonesia, 59 in Korea. This is a Vietnam business.
Where users come from
A cluster of small story accounts with a few hundred followers each, all riffing on the same bit. Besides @nhyhalarabbit there's @learnwithchibach (bio: "My journey learning English with Hala Rabbit AI", 1,683 followers, one video at 10-11k views, 990k), @mymodimy (318 followers, one video at 170k), and @chanzhoctienganh, opened 11-04. The Indonesian-language account @studiewithpiy has only 307 followers, with two videos at 120k and 94k views, and its captions call it "kelinci gemblung" (crazy bunny) and "disemprot mulu" (always getting scolded).
These accounts share a few traits: they all started posting late September to late October, the hashtags are nearly identical (#halarabbit #hoctienganh #AI #fyp), and every video follows the same beat: someone says something slightly wrong in daily life and the rabbit scolds them. Wrong thing said at a wedding, wrong thing said after an exclamation, wrong thing said while liking a crush's post. This looks like an official or outsourced account matrix (inference, high confidence): one persona per account, one shared script.
The timing fits. The matrix took off in October, Play installs rose by ~15k a week from late October to early November, and the Indonesian chart rank moved up over the same stretch.
But to be clear: the six videos @nhyhalarabbit posted from November 1 to 5 only got 14k to 30k views each. Hits are random, not every post pops. The point of the matrix is to open more accounts and post more, betting that one will land.
Student ambassadors with discount codes. From April to July 2026, iOS growth leaned on Vietnamese student KOCs. @huongzang_z's bio reads "Google Student Ambassador '26" and carries the discount code GAUOTRENMAY (75% off). One May video got 120k views, and a July video had the code GAU50. @tieumaoo (35k followers) had an April video at 350k views 4. If codes are settled per sale, the spend is just whatever sales come out of it (inference).
Free promotions to cold-start. In October 2025 the developer posted on r/AppGiveaway on Reddit: "iOS $289 lifetime membership, free for 48 hours." Small scale.
Facebook page "Hala Rabbit," pitching "chat with English and American AI" in Vietnamese. Whether they buy ads on Meta or TikTok isn't visible in the public ad libraries.
How the 4.8 stars came about
On Google Play, ratings are about 6.7% of installs (3,404 / 51,084). Comparable speaking apps usually sit at 1% to 3% (ELSA 2.3%, Learna 1.6%).
Reviews on the Vietnam App Store since late October show why. Of 80 reviews, most five-star ones end with the same lines:
"Mê thật sự luôn." (Honestly obsessed.) "Ai ngại nói tiếng Anh thì tải liền đi." (Anyone scared to speak English, download now.) "Học mà như chơi á." (Learning that feels like playing.) "Xịn xò nha." (Pretty awesome.) "Đáng tải nha mn!" (Worth downloading, everyone!)
There's also a fixed opener: "Phần mình khoái nhất: …" (My favorite part: …), followed by a single word like "AI chat," "details," or "useful." It looks like the in-app rating prompt pre-fills phrases for users to tap (inference, high confidence).
The real talk mixed in is useful too. One person wrote "My favorite is Đc bị chửi" (getting scolded), another "Mỏ hỗn á" (sharp-tongued). The bad reviews are the flip side: "One star, forces you to pay, might as well use Duolingo" (10-29); "The beginner section is too hard, feels like B2 material" (10-28). The most common question in TikTok comments is "Is it paid?"
Where the money comes from
Free to download, with daily lessons. AI conversation, pronunciation feedback and unlimited practice require a subscription or in-app purchase, listed on Google Play at $5.99 to $239.99. The 2025 October free promotion was listed as "$289 lifetime membership." Plus the 75% student-ambassador discount code.
An app with 50k installs reaching #60 on the Vietnam overall Top Grossing chart means payment rate and average order value are both decent. But the Vietnam chart bar caps it, so revenue is probably in the low thousands of dollars a month (third-party estimate, unverified).
Who it's competing with
The Vietnam education chart is crowded with AI speaking coaches:
| Product | Scale | vs. Hala |
|---|---|---|
| ELSA Speak | 43.7M installs, #59 on Vietnam overall Top Grossing | Veteran pronunciation-correction app run by a Vietnamese-American team, course-style, no persona |
| Learna AI(Codeway) | 54.4M installs, #41 on Vietnam overall Top Grossing | Turkish company, a general AI tutor scaled through heavy paid acquisition |
| Praktika | 21.1M installs | AI virtual teacher with a human feel, positioned as serious |
| Speak | 12.8M installs | US company, backed by OpenAI investment, course-based speaking |
| Loora, Stimuler, BetterSpeak, YayTalk, EasySpeak | 1.95M to 13.2M installs | AI conversation plus scoring, driven by paid acquisition, no localized persona |
| ChatGPT, Gemini voice mode | huge | Free and capable, but no IELTS question bank and no pressure to stick with it |
(Install counts from Google Play, 11-06.)
Feature for feature, Hala doesn't beat any of them. It isn't competing on who teaches better. It's competing on whose corrections can be clipped and posted to TikTok. ELSA, with 4,000 million+ installs, will never let its AI roast users. Big companies can't do that, and they don't want to.
I haven't seen a clear clone of the "sharp-tongued AI rabbit" product (no systematic search done). But a TikTok comment says "this app isn't as rude as Vietbuddy," which suggests Vietnam may already have other snarky AI products. I didn't identify which.
Why this one
- It turned correction into a ready-made joke script. Competitors all say "gentle, no pressure, feel free to speak." Hala did a scolding rabbit. "I said something wrong even in X, and the rabbit scolded me" is relatable to anyone, and viewers comment with their own versions of the same mistake. A few-hundred-follower account can still go viral, and the cost per user is roughly the cost of making one video.
- The scolding gags have to be written in the native language. Jokes about rice cookers and "free ship" only land for Vietnamese people. Local-made, the way a foreign big company's translation couldn't be.
- Saturate one country first. Lots of Vietnamese people take IELTS and are scared to speak. The app has held its place on the iOS Vietnam education Top Grossing chart for over a year. The Android version only arrived in August, just in time to catch the Android users from October's TikTok wave.
- The same script is already being copied. The Indonesian-language account swapped in "crazy rabbit" and "always getting scolded." The same format gets six-figure views in Indonesia too.
If it were you
Bottom line: worth following. The persona-plus-account-matrix play is cheap, clear, and easy to port to other languages. Hala has only seriously worked Vietnam; Indonesia just started. The two bets: whether the scolding lines can be funny in your language, and whether downloads driven by being scolded stick around and pay.
Who it suits: 1 to 3 people, with at least one native speaker of the target country who knows local internet memes, can write short-video scripts, and ideally has posted TikToks. Southeast Asia and other markets where people study English and are afraid to speak are all options: Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia (Hala just entered, not yet established), Brazil, Turkey, the Middle East, Japan and Korea. The features can be built on off-the-shelf speech and LLM APIs.
Who it doesn't suit: teams that only build features and don't make content. This category has no feature moat: ELSA and Learna have tens of millions of installs and paid-acquisition budgets, and you can't out-feature them. Also not for English-market plays: native English speakers don't need to learn English. Swap in "you get scolded for learning Spanish or Japanese," and the competitor is Duolingo, whose sarcastic owl nudging you to keep your streak was the veteran of this exact approach.
How to do it:
- A product like Hala's is enough: AI conversation, pronunciation and grammar correction, exam topics, plus a snarky but lovable character. Don't copy its approach of hiding the snark behind streak-keeping. Viewers click through from the videos, and the reason to download is getting scolded in the first minute.
- The corrections are the material itself. Every scolding generates a screenshot or short video inside the app that users can share, so they do the posting for you.
- Pricing follows Hala: free download, AI conversation on subscription, plus a high-priced lifetime tier, and large discount codes for promoters.
How to get users:
- Open 5 to 10 TikTok skit accounts first, one persona per account (student, office worker, couple), with a shared set of tags, and every video is the same "said something slightly wrong, got scolded" beat. Follow @nhyhalarabbit's rhythm: one post a day per account. A few-hundred-follower account can still go viral. When one does, open more accounts.
- Find student KOCs, put the discount code in their bio, and pay per sale.
- Ask for ratings inside the app, timed to right after the user has laughed at being scolded or answered something correctly.
When to launch: before mid-January 2027, launch and start posting videos. Early in the year is when "this year I'll finally get my English right" resolutions kick in, and English-learning downloads usually rise (inference). Hala is already copying itself into Indonesia, and the further out you go, the more likely the markets closest to Vietnam get taken first.
Signs that would mean you read it wrong:
- Hala's Google Play installs stopped growing after November, with weekly gains down to a few thousand or less. This wave came from a handful of hit videos, and when posting stops, so does the growth.
- On the Indonesia education free chart it stalls beyond #100 and can't climb. The bit doesn't travel well to another country: it has to be Vietnamese people writing for Vietnamese people.
- If negative reviews about the scolding feeling "uncomfortable" or "offensive" start piling up, or the store rating drops below 4.5, the snark works for videos but not for daily use.
- The reverse risk: if big names like ELSA or Learna start giving their own AI a snarky persona and posting similar videos, the window is closing. Move fast.

Growth tactics (with evidence)
- A matrix of TikTok skit accounts, one persona per account, all riffing on the "roasted by the AI rabbit" bit (confirmed via TikHub 2026-11-06 scrape):
- @nhyhalarabbit (the handle itself contains halarabbit, 4,174 followers, 32 videos): "con xin lỗi ba…" posted 10-16, 2.41M views, 164K likes; the 10-31 video has 1.17M views; the 10-27 video has 720K views.
- @learnwithchibach (bio reads "my English learning journey with Hala Rabbit AI", 1,683 followers): posted 10-11, 990K views; several other videos at 25K to 108K views.
- @mymodimy (Vietnam, 318 followers): 170K views; @chanzhoctienganh (9 followers, new account, 11-04).
- Indonesian account @studiewithpiy (307 followers): 120K and 94K views; captions read "kelinci gemblung" (crazy rabbit) and "disemprot mulu" (always getting scolded).
- What these accounts have in common: most started posting in 2026-09 or as late as October, have very few followers yet still hit million-view numbers; hashtags are nearly identical (#LanguageLearning #learnenglish #Halarabbit #AI #fyp); the content is always "said one everyday sentence wrong, got roasted by the rabbit." This looks like an official or outsourced small-account matrix. One account with a few hundred followers going viral shows the format alone drives traffic.
- The timing lines up: the matrix ramped up in October, and Play's weekly installs rose by 15K and the Indonesian chart ranking climbed over the same stretch.
- Student KOCs pushing discount codes (confirmed): @huongzang_z (bio: "Google Student Ambassador '26", code GAUOTRENMAY for 75% off) posted one video at 120K views in May and one code-bearing video GAU50 in July; @tieumaoo (35K followers) posted one at 350K views in April (4); @meidaily169, @growupwlala and @viet_ngthe (June, cross-posted on FB) are also promoting. This commission-per-code approach was used mainly on iOS during 2026 4–July.
- Review prompting (highly likely): iOS Vietnam reviews recently keep ending in the same stock phrases, such as "Mê thật sự luôn." (Honestly love it), "Ai ngại nói tiếng Anh thì tải liền đi." (Anyone scared to speak English, download now), "Học mà như chơi á." (Learning feels like playing), "Xịn xò nha.", "Đáng tải nha mn!", "Phần mình khoái nhất: …" (My favorite part: …). This looks like the in-app review prompt pre-filling phrases users can tap (appstore database, review table, 10-29 to 11-04). Play's 6.7% rating rate points the same way. AppRecs rates the "review manipulation risk" as 28/100.
- Giveaways and Reddit (verified, small scale): a developer 2025-10 posted on r/AppGiveaway: "iOS $289 lifetime membership free for 48 hours" (from Jina search results; the post body was blocked by Reddit). Used for early cold-start.
- Facebook page "Hala Rabbit" (promotes in Vietnamese as "chat with AI foreigners from the US and UK", 30+ hashtags, B1/B2 vocabulary). We did not track it in the Meta Ad Library (the metaads database returns no match, but no match doesn't mean no ads).
- No X, Hacker News or media coverage found (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 90 days).
Why it could take off
- Turned an AI speaking coach into a shareable TikTok bit: competitors all sell "gentle, no pressure"; Hala went the other way with a snarky rabbit that roasts you for mistakes (user reviews say "Đc bị chửi" (I love getting roasted) and "Vui nha, hài hước" (fun, funny)). "Got roasted by the rabbit for mispronouncing 'X'" is a ready-made short-video script that viewers identify with, watch and share, and small accounts can make go viral. The customer-acquisition cost is almost just the cost of making content.
- Saturate one country first: demand for IELTS prep and "scared to speak" is strong in Vietnam; the product is localized in Vietnamese (store name "Hala: Luyện Nói Tiếng Anh AI") and held a top-10 spot on the iOS Vietnam Education Top Grossing chart. The Android version only came in August, catching TikTok-driven Android users (Android has a high share in Vietnam).
- Pricing: free to download, in-app purchases from $5.99 to $239.99 (lifetime or annual), plus 75% discount codes. With only 50K installs it squeezed into #60 on Vietnam's Play Top Grossing overall, but the Vietnam grossing chart has a low bar, so that rank does not mean high revenue (third-party estimates around $5K/month, unverified).
- Indonesia was copied with the same script (Indonesian-language account studiewithpiy), showing the playbook transfers across countries.
Differentiation
Features are similar to ELSA, Speak and Praktika (AI conversation, pronunciation and grammar correction, IELTS topics). The real difference is persona and tone: a cute but snarky rabbit plus Vietnamese-localized memes. The difference is mainly there to serve distribution rather than learning outcomes: it gives the product built-in TikTok material. You could say the differentiation is why it took off, and it works through distribution.
Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: spreading inside niche circles. Vietnam and Indonesia TikTok has millions of views, but no media, X posts or founder revenue disclosures; only automated chart and estimate sites (appwinners, Peekly, AppInsider) list it.
- Copycats: no product clearly copying the "snarky AI rabbit" was found (not systematically checked).
What others can borrow
- Give an AI speaking coach a persona that "roasts" users so every correction becomes a short video; then test content with a matrix of skit accounts (one persona per account, shared tags).
- Start with an exam or fear-of-speaking scenario in one small Southeast Asian country, localize deeply, then copy the same script with a different language to the next country.
- Pay student KOCs with big discount codes on a performance basis; prompt reviews inside the app to lift ratings.
Unknowns
- Whether the matrix accounts are run in-house, outsourced or paid creators cannot be directly confirmed; whether Meta or TikTok ads were run is unknown (not covered by the ad library).
- Actual revenue: Vietnam's chart bar is low, and the amount behind a Top Grossing rank of #60 is unclear; third-party estimate of $5K/month is unverified.
- No data on retention or paid conversion of the snarky persona.
