Hala Rabbit: Practice Speaking(Hala: Luyện Nói Tiếng Anh AI) · HALA RABBIT

"Your dad raised you for twenty years just so you could call him a rice cooker?" How a snarky rabbit got an English app onto Vietnam's top charts

What it is An AI English speaking coach app with a snarky rabbit that roasts you when your English is wrong, aimed at Vietnamese IELTS takers and people afraid to speak.

Why it took off "Got roasted by the rabbit for one wrong English sentence" is a ready-made short-video bit. Starting in October, a batch of TikTok accounts with a few hundred to a few thousand followers made this content, with single videos hitting millions of views, which drove downloads in Vietnam and Indonesia.

A72What you could copy Don't copy the product, copy the playbook: switch the country or the target language (Vietnamese people learning Japanese or Korean), build a localized, sharp-tongued AI coach persona, flood TikTok with a matrix of one-persona-per-account accounts, then add student KOC discount codes.

Follow-up score 72: few people know about it (no press, nobody flaunting revenue), the playbook has evidence and transfers across countries (Indonesia already copied it), and it runs on content, not big-company resources. Minus points: AI tutoring has no moat in itself, the category is crowded with paid-acquisition giants, single-account hits don't last, and once a big player copies the persona the window closes. Hala Rabbit, an AI English speaking tutor built by an indie developer in Vietnam, works much like ELSA or Speak. The difference is a rabbit inside that scolds you whenever you get something wrong. Starting in October, a wave of low-follower TikTok accounts started posting short skits about "getting scolded by the rabbit." One clip reached 2.4M views, and the app gained 15k installs on Google Play in 7 days, reaching #60 on the Vietnam Top Grossing chart with just 50k installs. Here's what it is, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, who it's competing with, and whether you could build something similar.

A 33-second video

On Oct 2026 16, the TikTok account @nhyhalarabbit posted a vertical video captioned with a single line: "con xin lỗi ba…" (Dad, I'm sorry…). In the video, a girl named Nhi talks to the rabbit on her phone, trying to say "My dad cooks really well" in English. The rabbit first makes her say "chef." She says cooker. The rabbit explodes: "A cooker is a rice cooker. Your family's rice cooker, how many meals did you forget to switch on?"

By Nov 6, the video had 2.42M views and 164k likes. The top comment (21k likes) read: "Your dad raised you for twenty years, and you call him a rice cooker?" Below it, a stream of people kept asking the same things: "What's the app called?" "Is it free?"

At that point the account had only about four thousand followers. The same account posted again in Oct 31. The girl tries to say "free shipping" and blurts out "free ship." The rabbit says: "A ship is a boat. You bought a 30k dong phone case and you want them to send you a boat?" It got 1.17M views.

What it is

Hala Rabbit (listed on the Vietnamese store as "Hala: Luyện Nói Tiếng Anh AI") is an AI English speaking coach: you converse with the AI, get pronunciation and grammar corrections, and practice IELTS speaking questions, with vocabulary from B1 to C2. The iOS version launched in April 2025, credited to developer Bui Khoi; the Android version didn't come until Aug 2026 16. The main market is Vietnam, followed by Indonesia.

Interestingly, its store description calls it "a safe, judgment-free practice space." What actually made it take off is exactly the rabbit that judges you, and judges you harshly.

Reaching #60 on the overall Top Grossing chart with 50k installs suggests a fair number of people are paying. But the Vietnam Top Grossing bar is low, so the rank doesn't mean the revenue is high.

Where the traffic comes from: one-persona-per-account skit accounts

Nearly all of it comes from TikTok, and the approach is consistent:

  • There's only one script: "a everyday sentence → wrong English → scolded by the rabbit → correct version." @nhyhalarabbit's titles form a series: "Said it wrong even at a wedding," "Said it wrong even when I yelled 'oh my god'," "Said it wrong even when I liked my crush's post."
  • Many accounts, one persona each: @learnwithchibach's bio reads "My journey learning English with Hala Rabbit." In Oct 11, one post, "Isn't turning on the light just 'open'? What's wrong?" got 990k views (the ending line from the rabbit: "The light is on, but your brain is still dark"). @mymodimy had one at 170k, and in Nov 4 a new account with only 9 followers appeared.
  • The same script moved to Indonesia: @studiewithpiy made videos in Indonesian titled "Not a single day without being scolded by the crazy rabbit." In Oct 18 one video got 280k, and in Oct 24 another got 210k views (TikTok, 11-06).
  • What they have in common: they all started posting from late September to October, with a few hundred to a few thousand followers, nearly identical hashtags (#Halarabbit #learnenglish #AI #fyp), and one post per day. This looks like an account matrix run by the official team or an outside agency (an inference, can't be confirmed directly). Accounts with a few hundred followers still going viral shows that the content itself drives traffic, not the follower base.

The timing lines up: the matrix took off in October, and the weekly Play install growth of 15k as well as the rise in Indonesia's chart rank all happened in the same stretch.

Two side channels: 4–July, Vietnamese student KOCs promoted it on TikTok with discount codes (@huongzang_z's bio has a code for 75% off, and @tieumaoo4 had one post with 350k views), paid out per code, mainly pushing iOS. In October 2025, the developer offered "$289 lifetime membership 48 hours free" on Reddit's r/AppGiveaway, an early cold-start push.

Also note: each account only had one or two hits. @nhyhalarabbit's new videos in early November dropped back to 14k–30k views each, and @learnwithchibach dropped to a few thousand. Keeping this going means constantly opening new accounts and constantly testing scripts.

Why users are willing to get scolded

Reading the comments, viewers aren't laughing at a joke, they're relating: "I once wrote 'my father is the best cooker in my family' 😭" "On my exam I also wrote the noun for cook as cooker." Some people even name the selling point: "It scolds so harshly you remember it quickly and for longer, unlike other stuff I forget after studying" and "Got scolded this badly, I'll remember it for life." The top-liked comment at 940: "English apps are scolding people now 😂"; another at 72 likes: "Paying to be scolded, but I'm happy."

Demand in Vietnam is big enough: people taking IELTS, people afraid to speak. Rival AI tutors all pitch "gentle, no pressure." Hala flips that and scolds you, which turns neatly into comedy, and every correction becomes a ready-made short video.

The comments also hold a signal worth noting: many people ask "Is there Japanese?" "Is there Korean?" "Do you teach Chinese?"

Where the money comes from, and how much the reviews are inflated

The download is free. AI conversation and unlimited practice require a subscription or in-app purchase, listed on Play at $5.99–239.99. One user mentioned a Pro VIP tier at 699k dong (about $27). Plus 75% discount codes.

The ratings are inflated. In recent five-star reviews from the iOS Vietnam store, a large number end with the same stock phrases: "Mê thật sự luôn." (Truly love it), "Ai ngại nói tiếng Anh thì tải liền đi." (Anyone afraid to speak English, download it right away), "Học mà như chơi á." (Learning like playing), "Xịn xò nha." (Pretty cool). They often start with a fill-in-the-blank pattern like "Phần mình khoái nhất: …" (My favorite part: …). This looks like the in-app rating prompt pre-loads phrases users can tap (inference). One reviewer at 11-02 wrote, "My favorite part: being scolded. Learning like it's a game." On Play, the ratio of rating count to installs is 6.7%, while comparable apps typically sit at 1–3% (ELSA 2.3%, Learna 1.6%). Both point to the same thing.

The negative reviews tell the other side (App Store Vietnam store, 9–October): "Tapped the 7-day free trial and got charged for a full year right away, refund request rejected" "My 8-year-old tapped the 699k Pro VIP, refund rejected twice" "auto-renewal". One one-star review flat out calls it dirty seeding ads (Quảng cáo seeding bẩn), says the pronunciation sounds like Google, and claims there's no real AI chat at all.

Who it's competing with

The Vietnam education charts are crowded with AI speaking tutors (Google Play Vietnam Top Grossing, 11-06):

ProductScaleCompared with Hala
ELSA Speak(2016)43.7M installs, #59 on Vietnam overall Top GrossingEstablished pronunciation-correction brand run by a Vietnamese-diaspora team, course-style, not entertainment-driven
Learna AI (Turkey's Codeway, 2024)54.4M installs, #41 on Vietnam overall Top GrossingGeneral AI tutor with heavy paid acquisition
Praktika(2022)21.1M installsVirtual teacher with a realistic feel, fairly serious tone
Speak(2019)12.8M installsUS company, course-based speaking
Loora / Stimuler / BetterSpeak, etc.1.95M–13.2M installsAI conversation plus scoring, driven by paid ads, no localized persona
ChatGPT / Gemini voicehugeFree and capable, but no question bank, no feedback, no pressure

On features, Hala has no edge. Its real difference is persona and tone, and that difference isn't mainly about helping people learn better. It's about the product generating short-video material on its own: the differentiation is distribution. I haven't seen anyone copy the "sharp-tongued AI rabbit" (no systematic search done). Few people are paying attention outside: no press coverage, no one discussing it on X, the founder has never shown revenue, and it's only listed on a few automated chart sites and estimate sites.

If it were you

The bottom line: worth following, and what you copy is the playbook, not the product. Give an AI speaking tutor a localized persona that scolds, flood TikTok with a matrix of skit accounts, and saturate one country first.

Who it's for: a 1–3 person who can build an AI voice-conversation app (speech recognition, scoring, and character dialogue all have ready-made APIs), who understands a country's internet memes, can write a short skit script every day, and can run a dozen-plus TikTok accounts. Ideally someone from the target country, or with students from there nearby.

Who it's not for: people hoping to win on features (ELSA and Learna have tens of millions of users and paid-acquisition budgets, and AI tutoring has no moat in itself); people who don't want to make content and only plan to buy ads or wait for organic store traffic; people worried about reputation risk from "scolding users" or who want to target younger users (the bad reviews already include kids who were charged by mistake).

How to do it: two directions, pick one.

  • Switch countries: Thailand, the Philippines, Brazil, Turkey, the Middle East, and other English-learning markets where people are afraid to speak but love meme-style jokes. Build your own sharp-tongued character in the local language with local memes (it doesn't have to be a rabbit).
  • Switch the target language: people in the Vietnam comments are asking about Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Vietnamese people learning Japanese and Korean (for work and study stints in Japan and Korea) is also a large market, and the same character and script transfer directly.

Don't try to out-build Hala on the product: corrections need to be accurate, and the scolding has to hit the mark (puns, near-synonyms, the "Chinglish"-style humor of literal translation from the native language). Every correction should export in one tap as a vertical video, so users spread it for you. For payments, follow its model: free trial, subscription plus a pricey lifetime tier, and large discount codes. But state the trial charge terms clearly and make refunds painless. Most of its one-star reviews are about exactly that.

How to get users: copy its matrix directly. Start 5–10 accounts, each with a real-person persona (student, office worker, young mom), with one script format and one set of tags, posting one per account per day. After two weeks, pull the scripts that passed 100k views and re-shoot them with new people and new settings. Then recruit local university students with discount codes and pay commission per code. Typically you'll need dozens of posts to get one hit (inference), so your content cost is your acquisition cost.

Why timing matters: this Vietnam playbook only took off in October, and I haven't seen the same thing in other countries (no systematic search done). Launching within six months and getting one million-view clip in one country is fairly reliable. If you wait until mid-2027, copycats and big players will most likely already be running their own "scolding mode."

What would mean you read it wrong:

  • Hala's weekly Play installs fall back to a few thousand by late November, and it drops out of the top 100 on the Vietnam overall Top Grossing chart. That would mean the meme's heat is gone and the playbook can't sustain itself.
  • ELSA, Learna, or Praktika launches a "roast/sarcastic" character and runs paid ads. Then the persona is no longer scarce.
  • You open 10 accounts, post for a full month, and not one video passes 100k views. That means your market doesn't bite on "getting scolded," or the script is wrong. Don't force it.

Growth tactics (with evidence)

  1. A matrix of TikTok skit accounts, one persona per account, all riffing on the "roasted by the AI rabbit" bit (confirmed via TikHub 2026-11-06 scrape):
    • @nhyhalarabbit (the handle itself contains halarabbit, 4,174 followers, 32 videos): "con xin lỗi ba…" posted 10-16, 2.41M views, 164K likes; the 10-31 video has 1.17M views; the 10-27 video has 720K views.
    • @learnwithchibach (bio reads "my English learning journey with Hala Rabbit AI", 1,683 followers): posted 10-11, 990K views; several other videos at 25K to 108K views.
    • @mymodimy (Vietnam, 318 followers): 170K views; @chanzhoctienganh (9 followers, new account, 11-04).
    • Indonesian account @studiewithpiy (307 followers): 120K and 94K views; captions read "kelinci gemblung" (crazy rabbit) and "disemprot mulu" (always getting scolded).
    • What these accounts have in common: most started posting in 2026-09 or as late as October, have very few followers yet still hit million-view numbers; hashtags are nearly identical (#LanguageLearning #learnenglish #Halarabbit #AI #fyp); the content is always "said one everyday sentence wrong, got roasted by the rabbit." This looks like an official or outsourced small-account matrix. One account with a few hundred followers going viral shows the format alone drives traffic.
    • The timing lines up: the matrix ramped up in October, and Play's weekly installs rose by 15K and the Indonesian chart ranking climbed over the same stretch.
  2. Student KOCs pushing discount codes (confirmed): @huongzang_z (bio: "Google Student Ambassador '26", code GAUOTRENMAY for 75% off) posted one video at 120K views in May and one code-bearing video GAU50 in July; @tieumaoo (35K followers) posted one at 350K views in April (4); @meidaily169, @growupwlala and @viet_ngthe (June, cross-posted on FB) are also promoting. This commission-per-code approach was used mainly on iOS during 2026 4–July.
  3. Review prompting (highly likely): iOS Vietnam reviews recently keep ending in the same stock phrases, such as "Mê thật sự luôn." (Honestly love it), "Ai ngại nói tiếng Anh thì tải liền đi." (Anyone scared to speak English, download now), "Học mà như chơi á." (Learning feels like playing), "Xịn xò nha.", "Đáng tải nha mn!", "Phần mình khoái nhất: …" (My favorite part: …). This looks like the in-app review prompt pre-filling phrases users can tap (appstore database, review table, 10-29 to 11-04). Play's 6.7% rating rate points the same way. AppRecs rates the "review manipulation risk" as 28/100.
  4. Giveaways and Reddit (verified, small scale): a developer 2025-10 posted on r/AppGiveaway: "iOS $289 lifetime membership free for 48 hours" (from Jina search results; the post body was blocked by Reddit). Used for early cold-start.
  5. Facebook page "Hala Rabbit" (promotes in Vietnamese as "chat with AI foreigners from the US and UK", 30+ hashtags, B1/B2 vocabulary). We did not track it in the Meta Ad Library (the metaads database returns no match, but no match doesn't mean no ads).
  6. No X, Hacker News or media coverage found (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 90 days).

Why it could take off

  • Turned an AI speaking coach into a shareable TikTok bit: competitors all sell "gentle, no pressure"; Hala went the other way with a snarky rabbit that roasts you for mistakes (user reviews say "Đc bị chửi" (I love getting roasted) and "Vui nha, hài hước" (fun, funny)). "Got roasted by the rabbit for mispronouncing 'X'" is a ready-made short-video script that viewers identify with, watch and share, and small accounts can make go viral. The customer-acquisition cost is almost just the cost of making content.
  • Saturate one country first: demand for IELTS prep and "scared to speak" is strong in Vietnam; the product is localized in Vietnamese (store name "Hala: Luyện Nói Tiếng Anh AI") and held a top-10 spot on the iOS Vietnam Education Top Grossing chart. The Android version only came in August, catching TikTok-driven Android users (Android has a high share in Vietnam).
  • Pricing: free to download, in-app purchases from $5.99 to $239.99 (lifetime or annual), plus 75% discount codes. With only 50K installs it squeezed into #60 on Vietnam's Play Top Grossing overall, but the Vietnam grossing chart has a low bar, so that rank does not mean high revenue (third-party estimates around $5K/month, unverified).
  • Indonesia was copied with the same script (Indonesian-language account studiewithpiy), showing the playbook transfers across countries.

Differentiation

Features are similar to ELSA, Speak and Praktika (AI conversation, pronunciation and grammar correction, IELTS topics). The real difference is persona and tone: a cute but snarky rabbit plus Vietnamese-localized memes. The difference is mainly there to serve distribution rather than learning outcomes: it gives the product built-in TikTok material. You could say the differentiation is why it took off, and it works through distribution.

Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: spreading inside niche circles. Vietnam and Indonesia TikTok has millions of views, but no media, X posts or founder revenue disclosures; only automated chart and estimate sites (appwinners, Peekly, AppInsider) list it.
  • Copycats: no product clearly copying the "snarky AI rabbit" was found (not systematically checked).

What others can borrow

  • Give an AI speaking coach a persona that "roasts" users so every correction becomes a short video; then test content with a matrix of skit accounts (one persona per account, shared tags).
  • Start with an exam or fear-of-speaking scenario in one small Southeast Asian country, localize deeply, then copy the same script with a different language to the next country.
  • Pay student KOCs with big discount codes on a performance basis; prompt reviews inside the app to lift ratings.

Unknowns

  • Whether the matrix accounts are run in-house, outsourced or paid creators cannot be directly confirmed; whether Meta or TikTok ads were run is unknown (not covered by the ad library).
  • Actual revenue: Vietnam's chart bar is low, and the amount behind a Top Grossing rank of #60 is unclear; third-party estimate of $5K/month is unverified.
  • No data on retention or paid conversion of the snarky persona.
