First ad launched Sep 12, 1M installs in a week: Halo Reels Max is the third shell of a short-drama paid-acquisition machine
What it is An overseas vertical free short-drama app: one-minute episodes, unlocked by watching ads, also selling weekly subscriptions and coins. Mainly in Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Latin America.
Why it took off Behind it is a matrix. In Sep 12 Meta ad budget was shifted to this new package, targeting cheap-install Southeast Asian and Latin American markets, swapping local-language creative country by country to break into the top 10 of Entertainment charts, then inserting ads into every episode to earn back the paid-acquisition spend.
CHow you could follow Don't copy the Nth identical package. Teams with paid-acquisition capability could borrow the playbook of "one content library, many packages, one ad account, swap creative by country", or go after what it gets wrong: a short-drama app with fewer ads and transparent billing, tested on a small budget in the Philippines or Thailand first.

Halo Reels Max is a free short-drama app that launched on Google Play in Aug 18. For almost a month after launch, almost nobody installed it. In Sep 12 a Facebook page started running ads for it, three days later installs hit 156k, a week later they passed 1M, and by Nov 6 the total was 5.68M. Its shows, UI and copy are no different from its rivals. The difference is what's behind it: the same developer has three identical packages, Halo Reels, Halo Reels Pro and Halo Reels Max, and one ad page is buying traffic for ten short-drama apps at once. Max is just the one that got budget this time. Below is how the machine runs and what you should take from it.
"I only gave five stars so you'd see it"
In Nov 1, a user in the Philippines left a five-star review on the Halo Reels Max store page. It read: "This app is garbage! I gave five stars only to push the review up. Honestly I'd give it one star. Every episode has ads, and the ads auto-download other apps. If you want to watch shows, like those AI dramas, you're better off just going to TikTok."
The same week, another Philippine user wrote: "One episode is a minute long with 3 ads, so it's 3 minutes of ads." In Nov 3, someone else said: "I didn't even watch it, and it auto-charged me 555 pesos (about $9.5) in a week." Thai users had already complained in early October: "It says it's free with no ads, but after I watched 2 episodes it locked and wanted payment"; "When I subscribed it said the price would rise next week and I'd be notified before the charge. There was no notice at all, it just charged me." (Google Play reviews from the Philippines and Thailand, 10-02 to 11-05)
But the store page score is 4.73 stars from 126k ratings, with 81% five-star (Google Play, 11-06). Nearly a third of the written reviews complain about ads, yet almost all the star ratings are five. The "I gave five stars so you'd see it" review explains part of this. A bigger likely cause is that the app prompts for a rating right after you finish an exciting moment in an episode.
What it is
A vertical-video short-drama app: each episode runs 30 seconds to 1 minutes, a show has 60-plus episodes, and the genres are romance, revenge, hidden identities and rich-family feuds. The store description says "instant play, auto-continue, many genres," which every short-drama app says.
Several reviews mention "AI dramas," and a Thai user says "the shows are all made with AI, some good, some bad." It's a reasonable inference that a substantial share of the catalog is AI-generated short dramas. That would explain how it can spin up so many packages on such a low content budget.
There are two ways to watch: unlock by watching ads per episode, or buy a membership or coins. In-app purchases run $7.99–29.99 each. The Philippine users were charged 555 pesos a week for a subscription (Google Play store page and reviews, 11-06).

Source: Google Play install counts. The September figures are estimates from a third-party data platform.
The Sep 12 date is the key. There's a Facebook page called "PassionPro-Short" with only about 4,700 likes, yet in Nov 6 it was running 442 video ads at the same time, and it has run more than 20k ads in total (Meta Ad Library, 11-06). It promotes 10 short-drama apps: the three Halo Reels packages, BonusTV, ShortFly Pro, Drama World, DramaOL, AnyShort and others. The first batch of ads for Halo Reels Max started running in Sep 12, 20 versions at once, with the copy "Super intense, never-ending dramatic plots full of shocking reversals 💥😱". Installs started climbing the day the ads went live.
The developer's three packages were pushed up one after another. Halo Reels passed 1M in Aug 16, Pro passed 1M in Sep 10, and Max passed 1M in Sep 20 (third-party estimates). The three packages now total about 26.2M installs, and they're still adding 3M a week (Google Play, 11-06). When one package's growth slows, the budget moves to the next. The developer is named Nutri Plaza, which sounds like a supplement seller, and the contact is a personal Gmail. The main site haloreels.net says "HALOREELS LLC" in its footer, and the Max page says "HALOREELS MAX LLC". The page was built 5 days before the app went live.
Where users come from: cheap markets, creatives in the local language
From late October to early November, its best rankings were #3 on Thailand's Entertainment Top Free, #5 in the Philippines and #7 in Indonesia, plus #9 on Thailand's overall chart and #14 on the Philippines' overall chart. It also made the top 20 of entertainment charts in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong and Singapore. It sat outside the top 100 in the US and UK (Google Play charts, 10-29 to 11-06).
These are markets where an install costs a few cents to a few tenths of a yuan, judging from the figures. The creatives changed with each country. Before Oct 23 they were all in English. From Oct 31 they switched to Indonesian, "Alur cerita seru tanpa henti🔥". From Nov 1 to 3, there were 7 sets running back to back. In Nov 4 a Portuguese version was added (Meta Ad Library). Indonesia's entertainment chart is now at #10, which lines up with when the Indonesian creatives went live.
Apart from paid ads, there's almost no other source of traffic. There's no official TikTok account, nobody has mentioned it on X in the past three months, and no media has covered it. Searching online turns up only APK download sites and a few YouTube videos titled "how to delete Halo Reels" with a few hundred views each. Once it reached the overall charts it picked up some organic store traffic, but there's no way to separate out how much.
Where the money comes from
Ads are the main engine. Users describe it concretely: one to three ads after each episode, some longer than the show itself, some that jump to Google Play to install another app when tapped, and gambling and loan ads too (review quotes: "puro adds ng sugal", "Online Pautang"). In markets like the Philippines and Thailand, a single ad isn't worth much, but someone watching a 60-episode show sees hundreds of ads. That's likely enough to recover a few cents of install cost.
The supplement is subscriptions and in-app purchases. It reached around #60 on the Philippines' Entertainment Top Grossing, 72–75 in Thailand and below 126 in Indonesia. It never made the top 190 overall Top Grossing in any country (Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06). It brings in revenue, but not much, and the main money is probably still on the ads leg.
Who it's competing with
| Tier | Examples | Scale (cumulative Google Play installs, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|
| Top paid short-drama apps | ReelShort, DramaBox | 307M each |
| Big-company free short dramas | FreeReels / DramaWave (Kunlun Tech group), Melolo (ByteDance), PineDrama (TikTok) | 0.84–246M |
| Official paid platforms | NetShort, ShortMax, GoodShort | 0.99–162M |
| New batch from 2026 | FreeDrama, StoryReel, BlinkDrama, VibeShort | 10.7M–42.6M each, each adding roughly 1.2M a week |
| Randomly named copycats with the same playbook | MixReels, Short TV, AuraReel and others | 770k–14M |
| Same team | Halo Reels / Pro, Drama World, AnyShort, ShortFly and others | Over 100 million in total |
Another branch of the same team (the AnyShort group) uses the same ad page, the same template website and random Gmail addresses, and can be linked to 18 packages with about 100M installs combined. Halo is currently the largest branch. Above all of them sit ByteDance's and TikTok's own free short dramas.
If it were you
Verdict: Halo Reels Max has nothing worth copying in itself. It took off because of a ready-made library, a team that can run 20,000 ads across ten packages at once, and a budget rule that moves on to the next package as soon as the last one slows. Those belong to the matrix behind it, not to this app.
Who it suits: teams already doing overseas paid acquisition who have content or can produce it cheaply (including AI short dramas). They can use it as a playbook: split one catalog into a base, Pro and Max package, run one ad page, switch to local-language creatives by country, and push small-country entertainment charts.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers who haven't run Meta ads and can't front the budget to burn before recovering it, teams targeting the US or UK, and anyone counting on TikTok organic traffic to scale. In this category, organic traffic is close to zero.
How to do it: don't ship the Nth identical package, go after what it does badly. The complaints in reviews are very consistent: ads are longer than the show, ads sneak in app installs, and subscriptions charge without a reminder. A version with "one short ad per episode and a mandatory reminder before any charge" has a visible gap, especially in markets like Thailand and the Philippines where reviews are already full of complaints. AI-generated shorts have cut content costs, which is probably the only entry ticket a small team can realistically get.
How to acquire users: Meta paid acquisition is the only proven route. Pick one country (the Philippines or Thailand), make 20+ vertical creatives in the local language built around plot twists, test with a small budget until the cost per install is covered by ad revenue, then scale spend.
When to move: there's no clear window, but Google Play keeps clearing out duplicate-content copycat packages. How long this playbook lasts depends on when the platform decides to act.
Signs you've read it wrong: ① PassionPro-Short's active ad count halves within one or two months, or all three Halo packages stop growing together, which would mean the paid acquisition no longer pays off; ② Google bulk-removes multi-package duplicates of this kind; ③ the reverse: if a new short-drama package with fewer ads and no sneaky charges reaches the top 20 of an entertainment chart in Southeast Asia through word of mouth, the gap in user experience is real and worth going after.

Bottom line
Halo Reels Max is the third "relay pack" in a matrix of overseas free short-drama apps (unlocked by watching ads). The developer entity Nutri Plaza publishes three packs with the same content: Halo Reels, Halo Reels Pro and Halo Reels Max. They share the Facebook ad page "PassionPro-Short" for paid acquisition with AnyShort, BonusTV, ShortFly, Drama World, DramaOL and a dozen or so other packs. Max sat quiet for nearly a month after launching on 08-18, but once 09-12 this page started running ads for it, installs went from about 1 thousand to 156k within three days, and it passed 1M in a week. It took off because the matrix shifted Meta budget onto this new pack, targeting cheap-install markets like the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Latin America, with ads inserted between episodes and weekly subscriptions to recover the cost. The product itself has no differentiation.
1. Data (googleplay library)
- Launched 2026-08-18 (same day as Halo Reels Pro; the original Halo Reels first hit the store on 07-24). Developer Nutri Plaza, email [email protected], website haloreels.net/index-max.html.
- 5,677,354 total installs (11-06), 7 new over the last 764,533 days. 10-29 is about +4,912,821,8K over 760 days, roughly 95K a day. 125,774 ratings at 4.73 stars, with 1,000–2,000 new ratings a day (app_day).
- Curve since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): on 09-12 it had only 968 installs; by 09-15 it reached 155,731; by 09-19 it reached 976,969; it broke 10-04M on 3; after that it runs 5–150K a day, with swings that track ad spend (some days near 0, then a day with 40–800K catching up. That's averaging from sparse observation, so don't take it literally).
- Ramp order across the developer's three packages (app_day_ext, the day each first passed 1M): Halo Reels 08-16 → Halo Reels Pro 09-10 → Halo Reels Max 09-20. Clearly pushed one package after another. The three together are now about 26.2M installs, and +3.03M over the last 7 days (app_profile).
- Chart positions (chart_rank, daily, 10-29 to 11-06):
- Top Free: best Entertainment rank #3 in Thailand, #5 in the Philippines, #7 in Indonesia; best overall rank #9 in Thailand, #14 in the Philippines, #29 in Indonesia; Entertainment charts in Argentina, Mexico, Hong Kong, Brazil and Singapore all reached the top 20; US and UK Entertainment only ranked beyond #100. On the day, charted in 20 stores.
- Top Grossing (Entertainment): Philippines #60–68, Thailand #72–75, Indonesia #126–152, Mexico #141–159, Brazil #159–170; never reached the top 190 of any store's overall Top Grossing (in the Philippines it appeared at #194 overall for only one day). Revenue is there, but not high.
- Monetization:
ad_supported=True, in-app purchases $7.99–$29.99 (app_snap). A review mentions "555 pesos auto-charged weekly," which points to a weekly subscription. - Rating distribution (11-06 histogram): 5 stars 101,830, 4 stars 18,668, 1 stars 2,568, five-star share 81%. But in recent written reviews (Philippines, English), nearly a third complain about ads: "Every episode which is a minute long, contains 3 ads," "ads are longer than the episodes," "puro adds ng sugal" (nothing but gambling ads). The star distribution doesn't match the text reviews. Likely the app prompts for ratings at a good moment, like right after an episode (inference, not verified).
2. The matrix behind it
- metaads library: the FB page PassionPro-Short (page_id 1156915574179436) has only about 4,700 likes; 11-06 is running 442 ads (last check 258), lifetime total 20,301, 100% video, placements FB / IG / Messenger / Threads / Audience Network. It advertises 10 Play packages, including the three Halo Reels, BonusTV Pro/Lite, ShortFly Pro, Drama World, DramaOL, Passion Drama Pro and AnyShort (app_link).
- We found 17 ad groups pointing to Halo Reels Max (10 of them running now):
- The earliest ad started on 2026-09-12 (20 versions), copy: "Super intense, never-ending dramatic plots full of shocking reversals 💥😱 Simply click to sit back and enjoy the entire…" That's the same day the install curve took off.
- 09-17, 09-22 and 10-23 kept adding English creatives; from 10-31 it switched to Indonesian: "Alur cerita seru tanpa henti🔥 Klik untuk tonton semua episode sekarang😍"; 11-01 to 11-03 launched 7 groups back to back; 11-04 added a Portuguese version (Brazil). Its best Indonesian Entertainment rank was #7, and it's now #10, which matches the Indonesian creatives.
- The main haloreels.net site footer reads "HALOREELS LLC", the Max page footer reads "HALOREELS MAX LLC" (Jina reads the page, published on 2026-08-13, 5 days before launch). The footers on sibling AnyShort and other matrix sites read "REVERIE STUDIO LLC". Another study (play_com.anyshort.tvb) linked these packages by the same advertiser, the same template website and random Gmail developer addresses into one 18-package matrix with about 100M installs in total. The Halo branch is currently the largest in the matrix.
3. Where users come from
- Paid Meta acquisition (confirmed): see above. The ad start date and the ramp date line up exactly, the most direct evidence.
- Disposable app / relay packages (confirmed): the same content ships as base, Pro and Max packages, and each is pushed once the previous one ramps. Several hold chart spots at once (Halo Reels #6 Entertainment in Brazil, Pro #15 in the Philippines, Max #10 in Indonesia).
- Market selection (confirmed): installs cluster in Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong and Singapore; the US and UK sit beyond #100. Installs are cheap in these markets, and the ad eCPM is enough to recoup (recoupment is inference).
- Organic installs from store placement (inference): charting #9 overall in Thailand and #14 in the Philippines brings in some organic traffic, which can't be separated out.
- Incentivized ratings (unverified): the gap between the 81% five-star share and the negative text reviews is large.
- TikTok / X / media: none. x-radar shows 0 posts for "halo reels" in the last 90 days; TikHub TikTok search for "halo reels" returns Halo game videos and other short-drama accounts, no official account; the only web presence is APK sites like Uptodown / Aptoide / AppBrain and a few YouTube videos on "how to install / how to delete Halo Reels" (a few hundred views each).
4. Where the money comes from
- Mostly rewarded and interstitial ads: users say a one-minute episode takes three ads to watch, plus ads that send you to Play to install other apps, and gambling ads (reviews).
- Supplemented by in-app purchases and a weekly subscription ($7.99–$29.99; 555 pesos a week in the Philippines), around #60 on the Philippines Entertainment Top Grossing chart.
- The model is the same as AnyShort and Drama World Pro: install cost of a few cents plus several ads per episode, with ROI deciding which package gets more budget (inference).
5. Competitors (googleplay library, 11-06)
| Product | Launched | Installs / 7-day new | How Halo Reels Max differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort(NewLeaf / Crazy Maple) | 2022-08 | 307M / +5.51M | Original productions, paid per episode, top ten Top Grossing |
| DramaBox(StoryMatrix) | 2023-04 | 307M / +2.92M | Same, plus a free version, DramaBox Lite |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (SKYWORK, Kunlun Tech) | 2024-11 / 2024-09 | 246M / 152M | Big-tech free plus ads, with a much larger library and brand. The most direct rival. |
| Melolo (POLIGON, ByteDance family) | 2024-11 | 147M / +2.9M | Large free short-drama platform, #10 Top Grossing in Indonesia |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | 2025-12 | 84M / +3.01M | Traffic imported from TikTok itself |
| NetShort / ShortMax / GoodShort | 2023–2024 | 0.99–162M | Official paid short-drama platform |
| FreeDrama (Kuku), StoryReel, BlinkDrama, VibeShort, Coin Drama | 2026-02~05 | 10.7M–42.6M, +1.17M–1.32M over 7 days | A new batch of free short-drama packages from the past 2026 year, some already on Top Grossing (StoryReel #34 in Brazil, BlinkDrama #18 in Argentina) |
| MixReels, Short TV (Tuan Genilai), AuraReel, etc. | 2026-05~08 | 770k–14M | Same playbook from other random-name developer accounts |
| Same matrix: Halo Reels / Pro, Drama World / Pro, AnyShort, DramaOL, ReelMax, ShortFly | 2026-04~09 | See above | Same team, internal relay |
6. Differentiation
The product has no differentiation. The store copy is "short dramas, many genres, instant play, resume watching", which every short-drama app says. No originals, no exclusive content, no community. Against ReelShort and DramaBox, it skips premium per-episode pricing and leads with free plus ads; against FreeReels and PineDrama, it has no big-company traffic or catalog. The real difference is operational: one content set, one ad page, several shell packages in relay, and budget moves to whichever package has the best ROI. That's why it worked, but the capability belongs to the whole matrix, not to Max alone; Max is just the 09-12 that got picked for more budget.
7. Visibility
Nobody knows about it yet: no media coverage, 0 posts on X, no official TikTok account, no public revenue, appearing only on APK sites and data sites like appmagic and apptopia. But the "free short dramas + ads + emerging markets" niche is already crowded: big players (FreeReels, Melolo, PineDrama) and dozens of random-name small apps are all in it.
8. Copycats
Many small apps with the same playbook exist in the niche (MixReels, Short TV, AuraReel, Coin Drama, etc.), and the same matrix keeps releasing Pro and Max versions. No outside package copying the Halo Reels name was found.
9. Still unclear
- Content licensing: unverified.
- Who actually controls HALOREELS LLC / HALOREELS MAX LLC and REVERIE STUDIO LLC: unverified (likely a Chinese overseas-expansion team).
- Ad spend, eCPM, cost per install, ROI: unknown.
- Whether ratings are incentivized: inference, unverified.
- Whether there's an iOS version: not found.
