# A Hausa football blogger with a million followers led his fans into his top-up app: Hausa Plus

**What it is** : an app for Hausa-speaking users in northern Nigeria: Hausa news, football scores and courses, plus buying airtime and data, paying electricity and TV bills, and a wallet.

**Why it took off** : Hausa football blogger Usman Mahmud (1.07M on TikTok, about 1.05M on Facebook) treats it as his own app. His bio only carries its download link, and he posts tutorials teaching fans "buy 1GB for 250 naira". The people who come are his audience, and the top-up margin is where the money comes from.

**C** **How you could follow** : don't build another one in Hausa. Switch to minority languages like Yoruba or Swahili, partner with a local big creator, and offer an "content + top-up" app already made. He brings the brand and traffic; you split revenue by volume.

C grade: the playbook is clear and almost nobody has noticed, but it took off on the blogger's own million followers and trust, which copiers can't get. The features are generic white-label top-up, and its own income isn't verified. To follow, you'd first need a head creator in a different language. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-10 · 11-07 installs 42,008

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Hausa Plus is an app in northern Nigeria with Hausa news and football scores, and it also sells airtime, data, and electricity. The features aren't new, and similar top-up apps are everywhere in the north. It took off because a Hausa football blogger with 1.07M TikTok followers personally brought his audience in one by one. 4 months, 42k installs, no ad buying seen. The playbook is understandable, but the most valuable part is him, and copiers can't get that.

### A video teaching how to "buy 250GB for 1 naira"

On Jul 31, 2026, Usman Mahmud posted a video on his verified Facebook page (about 1.05M followers) titled "Yadda ake samun 1GB kan N250 da yadda ake amfani da manhajar Hausa Plus": how to get 1GB of data for 250 naira, and how to use the Hausa Plus app. The video has 97K views and over 5,600 reactions.

Hausa Plus had just gone live on Google Play three weeks earlier. Four days later, on Aug 4, he posted a TikTok tutorial on "how to top up the Hausa Plus wallet", 116k views.

Usman doesn't usually talk about top-ups. He talks football: transfers, El Clásico, Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, all in Hausa. His TikTok account @uthmanbabakiyi has 1.08M followers and 38.6M likes, and his bio says only "Download Hausa Plus 👇👇👇", linking straight to the Play Store page (TikTok, 11-06). In his posts he calls it "Manhajar mu", our app.

A five-star Play review from Oct 15 reads: "ml usman Allah yabaka abinda kake nema na alkhairi", meaning "Teacher Usman, may God grant you what you seek of good." The people installing the app are his audience.

### What it is

Opening Hausa Plus, you see several sections:

- **Hausa audio and video news** : daily news bulletins, with background playback and offline downloads;

- **Football** : scores, fixtures, news;

- **Hausa courses** : digital skills courses, with certificates on completion;

- **Bill payments** : airtime and data for MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile, electricity, DStv, GOtv and StarTimes TV subscriptions;

- **Wallet** , with fingerprint lock.

The paid product is the "Hausa Plus Premium" monthly subscription, which unlocks news and courses marked Premium, billed via Apple in-app purchase on iOS. The Android version doesn't use Google in-app billing and has no ads (Google Play, 11-06), so the money mainly comes from top-up margins: users keep funds in the wallet, and each data purchase earns the platform the spread between wholesale and retail price (inference; this is how Nigerian "VTU" top-up apps generally make money). Its website also publishes a top-up API for resale to sub-agents, so it earns on the B2B side too.

The setup is lean. The Play developer is TenDevs; the iOS version is registered to RANO SOFTWARE LTD, a Nigerian outsourced software company, and the same account has other top-up apps. The privacy policy page was built with the AI site builder Lovable, and the backend endpoints follow Supabase path formats. It looks like a creator supplies the brand and traffic while an outsourced team writes the code.

It was first called "Hausa Global", with a Telegram channel opened in January 2026. From late June to early July it distributed install packages directly in the channel, with each post getting 5,000 to 9,000 views. It went on Play in Jul 10 and was renamed Hausa Plus in Aug 4. From June 1.0.4 to October 1.3.10, updates came often.

### How much it grew

| Date | Google Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|
| 2026-07-10 | Launched |
| 08-17 | About 10.4k |
| 09-18 | About 20.4k |
| 10-08 | About 29.6k |
| 10-27 | About 39.1k |
| 11-06 | 42,008 |

(Google Play installs and third-party estimates, 11-06)

The curve is flat: about 10k in the first five weeks, then one to a few hundred to seven or eight hundred a day, roughly 10k a month. No sudden spikes from free promos or ad buys. From Oct 20 to 27 there was a small peak, 750 to 860 installs a day, right when Usman posted three El Clásico videos in a row (100k to 190k views each). The timing matches, but it can't prove those videos caused it.

On Nigeria's Google Play News free chart it peaked at #6 (10-29), and 11-06 hit #10, ahead of BBC and CNN. That sounds impressive, but the bar on this chart is low: two or three thousand installs a week is enough to reach the top 10. The iOS version charted in June and has only 5 ratings so far. Play has about 15 reviews in total, almost all five-star short notes: "Best application for football and data and airtime", "best app, buy data, kasamu labarin kwallo" (buy data, and read football news too).

### Where users come from

Almost all of it is Usman's own traffic:

- **Main TikTok account** : 1.08M followers, bio links only this. Football videos now get 25k to 190k views, and many casually mention "watch it in our app, Hausa Plus".

- **Facebook page** : about 1.05M followers, posts tutorials and news, driving traffic the same way.

- **Telegram channel** : 4,190 subscribers, used to distribute install packages before the Play launch.

- **Price hook** : "1GB for only 250 naira". That's wholesale data pricing, cheaper than carrier retail (the exact gap is unverified). Cheap data is an old trick for pulling users into these apps; coming from a blogger people watch every day, it carries trust.

- **Official side account** : TikTok @hausaplus has 14.7k followers, far smaller than the main account.

No ads found: it's not in the Meta Ad Library, nobody on X has mentioned it in 90 days, and there's no media coverage. Roughly, 42k installs is about 2% of the two main accounts' combined followers (inference), so acquisition cost is close to zero.

### Why it works

**The blogger brings his own distribution.** Someone whose videos each reach hundreds of thousands of views can swap his bio link to his own app and skip paid acquisition. For him it's a good deal too: where he used to earn only platform payouts and sponsorships, now every follower who buys data each week sends money through his app.

**Content keeps people, top-ups make money.** Users in northern Nigeria buy data almost every week. It's a must-have with high frequency. Users won't pay for news, so the news and football just get them to open the app, and once it's open, a top-up is a quick step.

**Trust is the hardest part, and he solves it for the app.** A new wallet app asking people to put money in is hard to launch. But when it's "Teacher Usman's app", his followers are willing.

**Low barrier to entry.** White-label top-up backend, Supabase, AI site builders, outsourced teams: four months and you can ship and keep iterating.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How it differs from Hausa Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Alrahuzdata App: Data & VTU | 1.05M installs, ~15k added weekly | A Northern top-up app with a Hausa-language UI, with 25x its volume, but top-ups only, no content |
| Elhassandatalink, Premiumsub, Maskawasub, etc. | 50k to 80k each | The same white-label top-up template, with each vendor selling through its own community |
| Arewa Topup, HAUSA DATA | 75k / self-reported 20k users | Pure top-up plays on the North and Hausa angle |
| VTU: Buy Cheap Data, GtmobileData | 410k / 330k | Nationwide top-up tools |
| BBC Hausa, Hausa Radio, etc. | 410k to 1.2M | Hausa-language news, but no top-ups and no local creators |
| AREWA24 ON DEMAND, ArewaFlix | 3.05M / 160k | Hausa film and TV, no news or payments |
| OPay, PalmPay, MTN MoMo | tens of millions | All let you buy data, but the interface is English and there's no Hausa content |

Both "Hausa-language content" and "top-ups" are crowded on their own. I didn't find a second app that puts both in one app and has a million-follower Hausa creator backing it. I also haven't seen anyone copying it.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : worth learning from, but not worth copying directly. The features are easy for anyone to copy. Its real moat is Usman himself and his 2M followers, and you can't get those.

**Who it suits** : teams already connected to a big creator in a small-language region, or creators in that position; teams with ready-made top-up and bill-payment backends that need distribution.

**Who it doesn't suit** : teams with no local relationships who only write code; anyone planning a second Hausa version in Northern Nigeria, since Usman already has that spot and pure top-up apps with million-install scale already exist; anyone wary of payments and funds compliance.

**How to do it:**

1. Swap the language or region: Yoruba, Igbo, Swahili, Amharic, or smaller South Asian languages. Start by finding local creators with 500k+ followers who post daily, ideally in football, news, or religion, where audiences are sticky and trust the creator.

2. Don't start by building an app. Start by giving a creator a ready-made app: a white-label top-up backend plus a content backend the creator can publish to. The creator brings the brand, you bring the product, and you split revenue by gross.

3. Put the creator's own content in the app (audio, short videos, scores) and make the home screen the top-up entry point. The first tutorial video should show followers how to make their first top-up.

4. Once it's working, copy its approach of opening the top-up API to downstream agents.

**How to acquire users** : entirely through creators. Put one link in the bio, post "how to use it" tutorials, and mention it casually in regular videos. Use a cheap data price below retail as the hook.

**When to move** : no rush. The window isn't about timing, it's about whether you can sign the next creator. Almost nobody is watching this model right now, so whoever locks in the top creator in a language first holds that position.

**Signs you've misread it** : creators post two or three redirect videos and fewer than 1% of followers install; or people install but only read news and never load money into the wallet; or the top-up margin gets squeezed to near zero by big-company wallets. Check Hausa Plus itself too: if installs are still stuck around 10,000 a month after a few months with no revenue signal, then "creator + top-up" is just giving creators some pocket money, not a business.

## Hausa Plus (com.hausaplus.app) research report

Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our googleplay and metaads libraries (agent-im server), AppstoreSpy history backfill (app_day_ext), iTunes lookup, Jina web search and page content, TikHub (TikTok), x-radar, public Telegram channel pages.

### One line

Hausa Plus is the app of **Usman Mahmud** , a Hausa football news influencer in northern Nigeria (TikTok @uthmanbabakiyi with 1.08M followers, Facebook verified page with about 1.05M followers). It offers Hausa audio and video news, football updates, Hausa-language courses, plus airtime and data top-ups (VTU), electricity bill payments, TV subscriptions and a wallet. **It took off because an influencer moved his millions of followers into his own app.** His TikTok bio links straight to the Play listing. The product itself is a VTU top-up app, of which there are plenty across northern Nigeria, wrapped in Hausa-language content.

### 1. Who they are

- **The person behind it** : Usman Mahmud. His TikTok account @uthmanbabakiyi has 1,077,409 followers, 38.6M likes, and 147 videos. The bio reads "Download Hausa Plus 👇👇👇", and the bio link points directly to `play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hausaplus.app` [TikHub handler_user_profile, 2026-11-06]. His verified Facebook page has 1,051,203 followers [Jina search summary]. The content is Hausa-language football transfer and match news (El Clásico, Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, and so on), also posted on Facebook, including posts like "Ga jerin labaran da muka duba yau a **Manhajar mu ta Hausa Plus** " (Here are today's news stories we checked in **our Hausa Plus app** ).

- **User reviews line up** : one Play review, from 2026-10-15, reads "ml usman Allah yabaka abinda kake nema na alkhairi", meaning "Usman, may God grant you what you seek in goodness." That suggests the reviewer is one of his followers [googleplay library review].

- **Who wrote the code** : the Play developer is "TenDevs", email tentendigitalservices@gmail.com; tendevs.com has only one line, "We build apps for Android and iOS" [googleplay library app table; tendevs.com]. The iOS version (id6780659971, listed 2026-06-22, v1.3.10, **only 5 ratings** ) is under RANO SOFTWARE LTD. It's a Nigerian outsourced software company, and the same account also has Abujasub Data (VTU), Deili, DworQ, and PicoDocs [iTunes lookup; ranosoftware.site]. So it looks like the creator supplies the brand and traffic, and an outsourced team builds it.

- **Lean tech stack** : the privacy policy is hosted at `hausaplus-legal.lovable.app` (Lovable is an AI site builder), and the VTU API path on the website is `api.hausaglobals.com/functions/v1/...`, the format used by Supabase Edge Functions [googleplay library app.privacy_policy; hausaglobals.com].

- **Renamed** : it was first called "Hausa Global" (the website hausaglobals.com still uses that name). The Telegram channel @hausaglobals was renamed "Hausa Plus" in 2026-08-04. The channel was created in 2026-01-15, and from late June to early July, APK installers (v1.0.4–v1.0.8, 5–9 thousand views per post) were posted directly in the channel before the app went live on Play in July 10 [t.me/s/hausaglobals].

- **Features** : Hausa audio news (background play, offline downloads), scores and fixtures, Hausa digital skills courses (with certificates), airtime and data top-ups for the four carriers (MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile), electricity bills, DStv/GOtv/StarTimes, a wallet, and biometric lock. The paid tier is a monthly "Hausa Plus Premium" subscription that unlocks news and courses marked Premium, with iOS billing through Apple In-App Purchase. The website also publicly offers a VTU API for third-party resellers (checking wallet balances, reselling airtime and data) [Play listing; hausaglobals.com]. The Play snapshot shows offers_iap=False and no ads, which suggests Android revenue comes mainly from VTU margins and the wallet, not Google In-App Purchase [googleplay library app_snap 2026-11-06].

### 2. Growth data

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-10 | 0 | Listed on Play |
| 2026-08-17 | 10,377 | More than 10k when AppstoreSpy started tracking |
| 2026-09-18 | 20,399 | |
| 2026-10-08 | 29,553 | |
| 2026-10-27 | 39,142 | About 750–860 per day from 10-20 to 10-27 (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| 2026-11-06 | 42,008 | Last 7 days +2,856 |

Source: googleplay library app_day_ext / app_snap.

- Launch curve: first 5 weeks about 10k installs, then steady at 150–800 a day, roughly +10k a month. No spikes from free promos or paid acquisition, which looks like steady content-driven traffic.

- There's a small bump on October 20–27, right when Usman posted the El Clásico videos (10-23, 10-25, and 10–190k views each). The timing lines up, but there's no way to prove those videos drove it.

- Chart: #6 on the Nigeria Google Play News Top Free chart (10-29), 11-06 at #10, ahead of BBC: World News and CNN [googleplay library, chart_rank]. 10-29/30 It also shows up at #140–200 on the hk/ae/sg/pl news charts. That comes from the small-store roll-up charts, so it doesn't mean there are users in those places. n_countries_now=1.

- Ratings: the Play library shows no rating (too few ratings, or not public). Only 15 reviews, almost all five-star one-liners ("excellent", "Masha Allah", "Live football", "buy data").

- Comparison: the bar for the top 10 of Nigeria's News Top Free chart is low. At two or three thousand installs a week it ranks #10, with big apps like X, Opera News and Google News above it. So "#10 on the chart" sounds much bigger than the actual volume.

### 3. Where users come from

1. **Founder/influencer's own traffic (confirmed)** : The TikTok bio, with 1.08M followers, links only to Hausa Plus on Play. 2026-08-04 posted a tutorial, "Yadda ake saka kuɗi a wallet dinka na Hausa Plus" (how to fund your Hausa Plus wallet), with 116K views. On Facebook, 2026-07-31 posted "Yadda ake samun 1GB kan N250 da yadda ake amfani da manhajar Hausa Plus" (how to get 1GB for 250 naira, and how to use the Hausa Plus app). It got 97K views and 5.6 thousand reactions. His football news videos now get 2.5–190K views each, and many of them push the app with "Manhajar mu ta Hausa Plus" [TikHub; Facebook page text].

2. **Telegram channel (confirmed)** : @hausaglobals has 4.19K subscribers. Before the Play listing, the APK was posted directly in the channel [t.me/s/hausaglobals].

3. **Price hook (confirmed)** : "1GB for N250." Since the carriers raised prices in 2024, the retail price of 1GB is clearly higher than this (exact price not verified). This is SME wholesale data pricing. VTUs already win users with "cheap data," and the creator is backing that price with his own credibility.

4. **Official backup account** : TikTok @hausaplus ("Hausa Plus Tv", 14.7k followers, posts Hausa political news) [TikHub]. Its reach is far smaller than Usman's main account. There is another account with the same name, @hausa_plus, that posts ghost stories and is unrelated, so don't mix them up.

5. **Paid ads (none found)** : no ads for this package name or "Hausa Plus" in the metaads library; x-radar returned 0 results in the last 90 days. The ad library only tracks a fixed list of products, so a miss doesn't mean no spend, but there's no sign of paid acquisition overall.

6. **Media (none)** : no press coverage found.

### 4. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Hausa Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alrahuzdata App: Data & VTU(Batsari Computers) | Android | 2025-06 | 1.05M installed, +15k weekly | Northern VTU with Hausa/English switching; top-up only, no content. Volume is 25× Hausa Plus. |
| Elhassandatalink / Premiumsub / Maskawasub and other MSORG-template VTUs. | Android | 2024–2026 | 5–80k installs | Same white-label VTU template; each brand sells traffic through its own community. Hausa Plus adds a content layer and a creator. |
| Arewa Topup, HAUSA DATA (hausadata.com). | Android/Web | — | 75k installs / self-reported 20k users | VTUs branded with northern/Hausa names, with no content. |
| VTU: Buy Cheap Data (FraNKAPPWeb), GtmobileData. | Android | 2020/2024 | 410k / 330k installs | Nationwide VTUs, pure utility. |
| BBC Hausa / BBC World Service, Hausa Radio (easyjam), Hausa Radio: BBC, DW, VOA. | Android | 2014–2025 | 1.2M / 410k / 100k installs | Hausa-language news and radio aggregators. They have content but no top-up and no local creator. |
| AREWA24 ON DEMAND, ArewaFlix | Android | 2016 / 2026-04 | 3.05M / 160k installs (ArewaFlix +30k a week) | Hausa film and TV entertainment, no news or payments |
| OPay / PalmPay / MTN MoMo and other big-brand wallets. | Android/iOS | 2018– | tens of millions | All can buy airtime and data, but the interface is in English and there's no Hausa-language content. |

Source: googleplay library app_profile 2026-11-06; hausadata.com.

Takeaway: "Hausa-language content + VTU" already has plenty of competitors on each side. I didn't find a second product that combines both in one app, backed by a Hausa-language creator with a million followers.

### 5. Why it took off

- **The creator brings the distribution** : 1.08M TikTok followers plus 1.05M Facebook followers, with posts pulling hundreds of thousands of views each. The bio and tutorial videos both funnel users in. 4k installs in 42 months, roughly 2% of the two main accounts' followers. Acquisition cost is effectively zero.

- **Recurring, high-frequency need to monetize** : users in northern Nigeria buy data every week. A VTU earns a margin on every transaction, and users don't need to pay for the news. Creators used to earn only platform payouts and product referral fees. Now they have their own payment flow.

- **Content is the hook** : fans already watch his Hausa football news, and the app has the same news and scores. A comment like "best app, buy data, kasamu labarin kwallo" (buy data, watch football news) shows the combination working.

- **Low bar for small-language charts** : Nigeria's News Top Free chart puts an app in the top 10 with two or three thousand installs a week, and the chart exposure brings a bit of organic store traffic.

- **Built cheaply** : privacy policy built with Lovable, backend on Supabase, outsourced team iterating fast (June v1.0.4 → October v1.3.10).

### 6. Differentiation

Compared with VTU rivals, it adds Hausa news, football and courses, plus a local celebrity endorsement. Compared with Hausa news apps, it does top-ups and has a wallet. But the real difference is **distribution** : it belongs to a creator, not a software company. The feature mix is easy to copy (white-label VTU template plus a content CMS). What can't be copied is Usman Mahmud's million followers and the trust behind them. So the difference is why it took off, but that difference is the person, not the product.

### 7. Visibility

**Still little known** : no press coverage, 0 discussions on X, no disclosed revenue, nothing on TrustMRR-type trackers. It only circulates in Usman's fan base and in Hausa Telegram and TikTok groups.

### 8. Copycats

I didn't find clear copycats. The north already had many "Hausa/Arewa"-named VTU apps long before (Arewa Topup, HAUSA DATA, Alrahuzdata), and YouTube has Hausa tutorials teaching people to "build your own VTU site and app and make 100k naira a month," but all of these predate Hausa Plus, so they aren't copies of it.

### 9. What others can borrow

- **The "creator-owned app" model** : in African and South Asian minority languages, content creators with millions of followers funnel fans into apps that combine "content + high-frequency payments" (airtime, data, bill payments). Content keeps people around, the top-up margin makes money, and the creator's endorsement solves the hardest problem for a new payment app: trust. Yoruba, Igbo, Swahili and Amharic markets can all replicate it.

- **Very low technical barrier** : a white-label VTU backend, Supabase, Lovable, or outsourcing gets it built. You can also expose the VTU capability as an API for downstream resellers, turning it into B2B2C.

- For us, what's reusable isn't building one app. It's offering creators like this an "app foundation + VTU API" package.

### 10. Uncertain

- Revenue: unknown monthly VTU volume and Premium subscriber count. No Google in-app purchase records on Android.

- Is Usman Mahmud the founder and shareholder, or a paid endorser? "Manhajar mu" (our app) and the bio link only this one product, which suggests he's at least the brand owner, but the equity relationship is unverified.

- The link between installs and videos is based on timing only, with no attribution evidence.
