# Tapped a shooting game ad, installed a new home screen: Shooting Skies Launcher and the "Game Shell Launcher" ad business

**What it is** An Android home-screen launcher with a built-in plane-shooting mini game. Once set as the default home screen it earns from ads, listed under the Tools category.

**Why it took off** The developer has already used the same template to produce three apps with millions of installs each, buying shooting-game ads and picking up chart spots in the less competitive Tools category; once users set it as default home screen, every return to the home screen is an ad impression, which supports the cost of acquisition.

**B** **How you could follow** Teams that can buy traffic can copy it: churn out launcher shells in batches with different themes, and start with cheap countries like the Philippines, Latin America and Vietnam. A safer approach is to swap "game-ad acquisition + high-frequency entry point" for a format users actually keep (lock screen, charging animation, a genuinely nice-looking home screen), and state clearly on the store page that it is a home screen.

Grade B: the template is still producing volume, and copycats in October can gain 450k a week, with few people outside the circle aware of it; but more than a dozen developers are already doing it, the barrier is all about paid acquisition breaking even, reviews are poor, and it sits on the edge of Google Play policy, so it could be pulled in batches at any time. Few people know about it yet

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)

A small Pakistani developer used the same template to make 5 apps in 8 months, about 17M installs combined. The latest, Shooting Skies Launcher, launched in October 8 and got 800k installs in under a month. On the surface it's a shooting mini game; in reality it's an Android home-screen launcher. Once users set it as default home screen, every return to the home screen is an ad impression. The business earns money and the approach is easy to learn, but a line of people is already doing it, and it sits on the edge of Google Play policy.

### A review from October 27

In October 27, a user named John M left a review on Google Play: "I wanted to install a game, and this launcher is what got installed. Not interested in this kind of thing, uninstalled." 131 people marked it helpful. An earlier one from October 15: "After installing this app my home screen menu broke!!", marked helpful by 369 people. The developer replied to both; the reply to the second was just "If you want a different look, you can change it anytime in settings."

These two reviews describe the app very clearly: users thought they were installing a plane-shooting game, and what they got was a launcher that replaces their phone's home screen.

### What it is

The store page is blunt: "Shooting Skies Launcher is an Android launcher that changes the look and layout of your device… Once set as default home screen, it replaces your Android home screen." The first feature listed is "Built-in game Shooting Skies", placed right on the home screen: shoot down incoming missiles, drones and planes with various weapons, "become the ultimate sniper." Only after that come the 10 game-themed wallpapers, color schemes, icon shapes and gestures as home-screen features.

It's listed under Tools, yet its age rating is "Everyone 10+ / Mild Violence," a rating normally reserved for games. The version number is still 0.1, with no updates since launch. It earns entirely from ads, with no in-app purchases.

### Scale

Cumulative installs shown publicly on Google Play (recorded daily):

| Date | Total installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 171,110 | 2,619 |
| 10-31 | 325,863 | 3,388 |
| 11-03 | 635,767 | 4,559 |
| 11-06 | 807,463 | 5,856 |

Over 8 days it gained 636k installs, averaging about 80k a day. 11-06 It ranks on the Tools free chart in 21 countries: best position #17 in the Philippines, #24 in Argentina, #34 in Vietnam, #39 in Brazil, #50 in the UK, and #62,10-31 in the US; its best placement was #11.

Rating 4.8, but the distribution is odd: among 5,856 ratings, one-star and two-star make up 0, and the same developer's older products Duck Blast Launcher and Pixel Monsters Launcher each have over 1,300 one-star ratings. Inference: it may only prompt for ratings when users are happy playing. But the two most-marked-helpful reviews at the top of the store page are complaints; this has not been verified.

### Why it worked from the start: the 5th replication

Hero Fighting Games' store contact email is a personal Gmail, its website is a Wix template site, the homepage image file is named "ChatGPT Image Jan 18, 2026", and besides terms and privacy policy the site has only one page, an "uninstall guide." Its 5 apps on Play are the same template with different themes (Google Play, 11-06):

| App | Launched | Total installs | New in the last 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel Monsters Launcher | 2026-02-17 | 5.39M | 230k |
| Duck Blast Launcher | 2026-02-23 | 6.43M | 500k |
| Makeup Challenge Launcher | 2026-02-26 | 3.46M | 200k |
| Tricky Couples Launcher | 2026-09-10 | 920k | 370k |
| Shooting Skies Launcher | 2026-10-08 | 810k | 640k |

The first three apps launched back to back within one week in 2, and all reached several million installs. So by the time Shooting Skies launched, the creative approach, the countries to target and how to plug in the ads had already been tested three times over. The theme was also well chosen: duck hunting (Duck Blast) and plane shooting are the shooting-game ad formats that convert well.

### Where users come from

- **Likely paid acquisition, though no ad itself is visible** . An Tools-category app doing 80k installs a day with no press coverage. Searching its name on TikTok turns up only videos of a toy with the same name, with no sign of organic word of mouth. Each app has a Facebook Page categorized as "Video Game." Shooting Skies' Page has 34 followers but 27,964 people talking about it; Duck Blast has 149 followers and 4,294 talking about it. Few followers with lots of engagement is the typical pattern of Meta ads, since likes and comments on ads get credited to the Page. Some TikTok accounts also repost ads for these "gamified launchers": one "Candy Race launcher Ads" video has 48k views (2026-03). We couldn't find which platforms they spend on or what an install costs.

- **Picking up rankings in the Tools chart** . It's a game, but it sits in the Tools category. In the Philippines, Argentina and Vietnam, a few tens of thousands of daily installs in the Tools Top Free chart can reach the top 20 to 35, and charting brings in a bit more organic traffic. The same volume in the Games category wouldn't rank near the top.

- **Store page packaged as a game** . The screenshots show missile and drone shooting, with a game age rating. Someone who clicks a shooter ad and lands on the store page will think it's that game.

### Where the money comes from

All of it is ads. The data site AppGoblin broke down the sister app Duck Blast, finding 19 ad networks, 2 mediation platforms and 3 attribution tools. It estimates Duck Blast at roughly 690k monthly active users and $10k+ in monthly revenue (third-party estimate, treat as a floor).

The money comes from the Launcher format. An ordinary mini-game gets opened for two days and then forgotten. Once a Launcher is set as the default home screen, every press of Home and every unlock returns the user to it, so it shows far more ad impressions than a mini-game does. To uninstall, you first have to switch the default home screen back in system settings, which is why the developer's website has a dedicated uninstall guide. This retention isn't users choosing to stay, but the ad revenue is real.

The cost is reputation. On Reddit's r/googleplay, someone posted telling people not to download "Duck Blast Launcher, or any game from Hero Fighting Games"; a YouTube video, "Duck blast Launcher Adware explained" (2026-06,680 views), calls it adware outright.

### Who it's competing with

Hero Fighting Games didn't invent this template, and others have been copying it for a while (Google Play, 11-06):

| Product | Developer | Launched | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hole U Can Eat Home App | Hadiz Studio | 2025-09 | 12.8M installs, the earliest and largest one we've found; the same developer also has City On Fire Home App (3.99M) |
| Barber Salon / Gun Chase / Crazy Farmer and other Launchers | Gamnest | 2025-10 ~ 12 | About 15.7M in total; Barber Salon 7.16M, once ranked #1 in the Tools category |
| Way Out: Parking Jam Launcher | HossamMetwally07 | 2026-05 | 2.09M |
| Arrow Launcher, Bus Out Launcher | Hewey Lane | 2026-10, 2026-08 | Arrow 470k, +450k in 7 days, ramping about as fast as Shooting Skies |
| Car Launcher: Road Puzzle | Gladys Bishop | 2026-09 | 330k |
| Mahjong Triple: Tile Launcher | Screening Developers | 2026-07 | 310k |

Another route also monetizes through ads via Launchers, but gets users without game creatives: in 2026 6 and July, a wave of "iOS 27 / Liquid Glass" look-alike home screens appeared, each with 1M to 2M installs, riding the "turn Android into an iPhone" topic.

The websites of Hero Fighting Games and Gamnest use the same Amazon ad-network account tag, and Gamnest shares another ad tag with them (from web search snippets, pages not opened to verify). Inference: these companies are either in the same circle or use the same ad management agency.

Bottom line: the products themselves have no real difference. The difference is only in which theme they pick and who runs the ads better.

### If it were you

**B | Worth testing, the opportunity is there, but the weaknesses are clear.** The template is still producing volume: Arrow Launcher, launched in October, still gained 450k in a week, and few people outside this business know about it. But it is essentially a paid-acquisition-plus-ads business, where the barriers are in ad buying and payback math, not the product. More than a dozen developers are already doing it, and they're skirting Google Play policies on "deceptive behavior" and "disruptive ads."

**Who it suits** : small teams that have bought ads for hypercasual games or utility apps, can work out what an install costs and how much ad revenue a user brings in; people who can make playable ads and short-video creatives; people who can accept an account being delisted and starting over with a new one.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who hasn't run paid ads and is counting on organic store traffic; anyone who wants to build a product users genuinely love and can sustain long term; anyone who can't afford their developer account being banned (especially if the main account also hosts other legitimate apps).

**How to do it** : there are two paths. One is to copy it: a lightweight Launcher shell plus a well-themed mini-game, listed in Tools, with one template reskinned in batches, each judged after 4 to 8 weeks. Pick themes from ones already proven in ads, like shooting, puzzles, "move the car" or "pop the arrows." The other is to do what the copycats do badly: the same "game plus high-frequency entry point" but in a form users are willing to keep, such as a lock screen, charging animation, or caller-ID theme, or a home screen that is actually good-looking. Write the store page honestly that it's a home screen, and make uninstall a one-tap process. This carries less risk of backlash and bans, but retention and ad revenue will also be noticeably lower.

**How to acquire users** : run short-form videos and playable ads showing game mechanics on Meta and TikTok. Start in countries where installs are cheap, like the Philippines, Vietnam, Latin America and Indonesia, then expand to the US and UK once payback looks good. Use chart placement in Tools to get a bit more organic volume.

**When to move** : there's no hard deadline, but the window is shrinking. Copycats have clearly multiplied since May 2026, and Google's scrutiny of Launcher-type apps will only tighten. If you're going to do it, get a first product out before early 2027, then decide whether to scale after a month or two of data.

**What would show you read it wrong** : if Hero Fighting Games, Gamnest, Hadiz Studio and similar apps get delisted from Play in bulk, or new Launcher clones can no longer break 500k, the window has closed. Conversely, if new accounts in 2027 still hit a million within a month of launch, the business is broader than it looks and worth moving up to A.

| Niagara / Smart Launcher / Microsoft Launcher / HiOS Launcher | Android | 2012–2021 | 18M ~ 940M | Sells the home screen experience itself (or is preinstalled by a manufacturer), with long-term users; Shooting Skies' home screen is just a shell carrying ads |

Where users come from

- Inference **Paid acquisition (gamified ad creatives, very likely on Meta)** : about 80k installs/day with no organic content spread (TikTok search only returns toy videos); the Facebook Page is categorized as Video Game, with 34 followers but 27,964 talking about this, while the sister app Duck Blast's Page has 149 followers and 4,294 talking about it; some TikTok accounts repost similar 'Candy Race launcher' ad creatives. Our metaads/googleads/tiktokads libraries did not track this developer.

- **Verified** **Store category charts (Tools chart placement)** : charting daily across 22–27 store × chart combinations, best Tools Top Free placement #11; the Tools chart bar is low in the Philippines, Argentina and Vietnam

- **Verified** **Developer portfolio / template reuse** : 5 same-template Launchers from one developer total 17M installs; new releases charted in 21 countries at launch

- Inference **Rating management** : rating distribution 1★0, 2★0, 3★51, 4★1307, 5★4483; sister apps each have thousands of 1★ reviews; likely controlling when the rating prompt appears

## Why Shooting Skies Launcher (com.herofightinggames.shooting.skies) is growing

> Channel: Google Play / TOOLS | Developer: Hero Fighting Games (Pakistan, personal Gmail contact) | Listed 2026-10-08 | Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It's not a new product. It's the **№5 clone of a template** : small ad-creative mini-games rebuilt as built-in games inside an Android home-screen launcher, parked in the low-competition TOOLS category, with paid acquisition pushing the launcher-wrapped games to users. Once set as the default home screen, every unlock becomes an ad impression, and uninstalling means switching the default home screen first. 100% of the money comes from ads. It moves fast because the developer already has 3 versions of the same thing with 3M–6.4M installs: the creatives, the ad buying and the monetization pipeline are all ready to go.

| 11-06 | 807,463 | 5,856 |

- +636k installs in 8 days (about 80k/day on average), with +340~480 ratings per day.

- Charting daily across 22–27 "store × chart" combinations; best TOOLS Top Free placement #11 (10-31); as of 11-06, the Philippines 17, Argentina 24, Vietnam 34, Brazil 39, UK 50, US 62.

- Rating distribution [1★0, 2★0, 3★51, 4★1307, 5★4483], average 4.8. The developer's older product Duck Blast has 1,326 1★ reviews and Pixel Monsters has 1,329 1★ reviews; the new app has no 1★/2★ reviews at all, which isn't natural (possibly rating requests only shown when the user is enjoying the app; not verified).

- Ad-supported only (app_snap.ad_supported = True, no in-app purchases). Third-party estimates: AppGazers estimates 10/7–11/6 downloads, 26k–128k, and <$5K in in-app purchases (clearly underestimated and doesn't match store data) [appgazers](https://appgazers.com/reports/apps/android-com.herofightinggames.shooting.skies); AppGoblin estimates the sister app Duck Blast at roughly 689k monthly active users, $10K+ monthly revenue, 100% from ads [appgoblin](https://www.appgoblin.info/apps/com.herofightinggames.duck.blast).

### 2. The developer's product portfolio (same template)

| **Shooting Skies Launcher** | 2026-10-08 | 807,463 | 636,353 | 5,856 |

17M installs combined, +1.94M in the last ~7 days. A Shark Madness Launcher (v0.6,2026-08) also appears on Uptodown / Aptoide but not in our Play library; it may be a small test or delisted (not verified) [uptodown](https://shark-madness-launcher.en.uptodown.com/android). The official site is a Wix template, with a homepage image generated by "ChatGPT Image Jan 18, 2026" and only an uninstall guide, terms and privacy pages [herofighting-games.com](https://www.herofighting-games.com/). BuiltWith shows herofighting-games.com shares the same Amazon Publisher Services tag with gamnest.com and games-valley.com, and shares another ad tag with gamnest.com (from search snippets; the page is behind a captcha and wasn't opened to verify). This suggests it and Gamnest, which built this template earliest, are very likely in the same circle, using the same ad management agency, or even the same people.

### 3. Competitors: the "game-shell Launcher" template

Source: googleplay library, filtered by title containing launcher / home app and description with built-in games, 2026-11-06.

| Product | Developer | Launched | Installs / 7-day new | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hole U Can Eat Home App | Hadiz Studio | 2025-09-25 | 12.8M / 188k | The earliest and biggest of the same kind in the library: City On Fire Home App (3.99M), Teasing Simulator Home App (2026-09) |
| Gun Chase / Crazy Farmer / Grass Puzzle / Barber Salon Launcher | Gamnest | 2025-10 ~ 2025-12 | Combined 15.7M; Barber Salon 7.16M / 7 days +407k | Barber Salon hit #1 on the TOOLS category chart |
| Way Out: Parking Jam Launcher | HossamMetwally07 | 2026-05-06 | 2.09M / 215k | Copycats |
| Arrow Launcher, Bus Out Launcher | Hewey Lane | 2026-10-12 / 2026-08-28 | 470k / 454k; 150k | A copycat, with Arrow's ramp speed on par with Shooting Skies |
| Car Launcher: Road Puzzle | Gladys Bishop | 2026-09-08 | 330k / 71k | A copycat (the same account is also doing AI tools, a classic matrix account) |
| Mahjong Triple: Tile Launcher | Screening Developers | 2026-07-13 | 310k | Copycats |
| AimPro: Crosshair & Launcher | KueMiin | 2026-08-19 | 690k | Crosshair tool + Launcher |
| Real launchers: Launcher OS, Niagara, Smart Launcher, Microsoft Launcher, HiOS/XOS (preinstalled by Transsion) | — | 2012–2021 | 18M ~ 940M | They sell the launcher itself, not a game shell |
| "iOS 27 / Liquid Glass" look-alike launchers, a whole wave | HK Crafted, CAA Studio, Wazzion, etc. | 2026-06 ~ 07 | 1M–2M each | Also launchers running ads, but their acquisition rides the "fake iPhone" hook, not a game |

Takeaway: lots of people do the same thing, and Shooting Skies has no product difference. Its edge in this template is that the operator has **already run it 3 times** , so a new account hits charts in 21 countries at once.

### 4. Growth tactics

1. **Paid acquisition (high confidence, but our ad libraries have no direct evidence)** .
    - About 80k installs a day, and nothing in TOOLS, like content buzz or press coverage, could carry that volume; searching TikTok for "shooting skies launcher" or "duck blast launcher" returns only toy videos, with no organic spread (TikHub search, 2026-11-06).
    - Each product has a Facebook page categorized as "Video Game": the Shooting Skies Launcher page has only 34 followers but 27,964 "talking about this"; the Duck Blast page has 149 followers and 4,294 talking about [facebook](https://www.facebook.com/p/Shooting-Skies-Launcher-61595278980869/), [facebook](https://www.facebook.com/61588020355877/). Few followers, lots of engagement: the typical look of a Meta ad campaign (interactions on ads count toward the page).
    - On TikTok, someone is re-uploading ad creatives for gamified launchers like "Candy Race launcher Ads" (@biouxads, 2026-348k views), which suggests this template's acquisition is simply game ad creatives (TikHub).
    - Our metaads / googleads / tiktokads libraries don't track this developer, so not finding them doesn't mean they aren't advertising.

2. **Riding the TOOLS chart** : the content is a game, but it's listed under TOOLS. In countries like the Philippines, Argentina and Vietnam, tens of thousands of daily installs can reach the top 20 there, and charting brings a bit of organic traffic; the same volume can't reach the top of the games category.

3. **Store page packaging** : the screenshots and description talk about "missiles, drones, planes", with a "Everyone 10+ / Mild Violence" rating, so to a user who tapped a game ad, it looks like that game.

4. **Rating management** : of 5,856 ratings, 0 are 1★/2★, while sister apps each have thousands of 1★. They are most likely controlling when the rating prompt appears (unverified).

### 5. Where the money comes from

- 100% ads (no in-app purchases). AppGoblin found Duck Blast integrates 19 ad networks, 2 mediation SDKs and 3 attribution SDKs [appgoblin](https://www.appgoblin.info/apps/com.herofightinggames.duck.blast).

- The key is the launcher form: once set as the default home screen, every time a user returns to the home screen or unlocks the phone, they land in this app, so ad impressions far outnumber a regular casual game's. Removing it means first switching back to the original launcher in system settings, and the developer's website even has a dedicated "uninstall guide" page [guide](https://www.herofighting-games.com/guide). So retention is passive (users don't want to stay), but for ad revenue it's very real.

- Users call it adware: a Reddit r/googleplay thread "Do not download duck blast launcher or any game by hero fighting games" [reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/googleplay/comments/1swgn8g/really_important_app_virus_thing/); a YouTube video "Duck blast Launcher Adware explained" (680 views, 2026-06).

- Unit economics (inferred): the main markets are cheap-CPI countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, Argentina, Brazil and Indonesia, with coverage also in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France and Italy; the default-home-screen ad impressions are what pay back the spend. We don't know the actual CPI or ARPU.

### 6. Differentiation and whether it was engineered

- Versus real launchers: it doesn't sell a home-screen experience, it sells a "game"; the launcher is just the shell that carries the ads.

- Versus ordinary hyper-casual games: same paid-acquisition creatives, but once installed it occupies the default home screen, so ad impressions and "passive retention" are far stronger than a plain game's, and it can ride the TOOLS chart.

- Versus same-template competitors (Gamnest, Hadiz, Hewey Lane...): almost no difference, just a different game theme (shooting down planes). This theme, like "Duck Blast" shooting ducks, is one of the shooter ad creatives that converts well.

- So: **the "game ad → launcher" template is what made it work; Shooting Skies' own edge is just its theme and the operator's execution** .

### 7. Visibility

- No press coverage, no discussion on X (x-radar finds nothing in the last 30 days), no public revenue; only auto-generated pages from data sites (AppBrain, Similarweb, Apptopia, AppGazers) and a few posts calling it adware.

- But the template has already been copied by many small developers (see section 3), which shows it is an openly known play in Play paid-acquisition circles.

### 8. What others can learn

- "Games in ads" + a tool form that takes a high-frequency entry point (launcher, lock screen, charging animation, incoming-call skin, etc.), trading the tool form for ad impressions and retention;

- Riding charts in less crowded categories;

- One template, many themes, shipped in batches (same developer, 8 apps in 5 months), each run for 4–8 weeks.

- Risks: Google Play is cracking down harder on "deceptive behavior", "disruptive ads" and "improper use of system features"; users treat it as adware, so reputation is poor; the risk of delisting or ad account bans is high.

### 9. Uncertain

- Which ad platforms it runs on (Meta / Google UAC / AppLovin / Mintegral) and the CPI are not covered by our ad libraries;

- Whether the 0 1★/2★ ratings are controlling the rating prompt, or the app is just new and the bad reviews haven't shown up yet;

- Whether Hero Fighting Games and Gamnest / games-valley.com are the same company (only one indirect clue: a shared ad tag);

- Real ad revenue (AppGoblin's $10K+/month is only a lower-bound estimate).
