Stuffing a couple's puzzle game into a "desktop launcher": a Pakistani solo developer's reskin pipeline
What it is A couples-themed brain-teaser mini game, disguised as an Android desktop launcher and listed under Tools, earning from ads.
Why it took off Listed under Tools, it charts easily in countries like South Africa and the Philippines; once set as the default home screen, users see ads every time they press Home, and it's hard to uninstall; the developer ships the same shell in batches with different themes, likely paired with paid acquisition in emerging markets.
CWhat you can copy Only the category arbitrage and the batch-testing of "one shell, many trending themes". Stay away from auto-start, out-of-app ads and hidden icons: that part breaks Play policy, and one app from the same developer has already been delisted.

Tricky Couples Launcher has been on Google Play for under two months, with 918k installs and 7k new installs in the last 370 days. The store calls it a "desktop launcher" and lists it under Tools, but it's really a couples-themed brain-teaser game wrapped in an Android desktop shell. The same developer has used this shell for five or six apps, about 17M installs in total. Below: why this shell is valuable, where the traffic comes from, who else does it, and which half to learn and which half to avoid.
A father who couldn't find the app
In Oct 3, a user named Eric Hazen left a negative review on Google Play: "Like a virus, it starts itself and shows ads. My daughter installed it, it doesn't show up in my app list, they are really trying to hide it." 62 people marked it helpful (Play listing, 11-06). The developer replied the same day: "We follow Google Play policy, and the app contains no malware."
The most-liked review (146 likes) is much shorter, Sep 25: "Beat it in a few minutes, want more levels."
Put these two reviews side by side and you have the whole secret of this app: the game can be finished in minutes, but once installed it doesn't leave.
What it actually is
The store page's first line reads "Tricky Couples Launcher is an Android launcher that changes your device's look and layout." The features listed below are wallpapers, color themes, icon shapes, gestures: all stock launcher-template stuff. The real content is hidden in the first item under "Main features": a built-in mini-game on the home screen called Tricky Couples, "solve funny, melodramatic couple puzzles and find the hidden lovers."
So users come for a couples puzzle game, and after installing, the app asks them to set it as the default home screen. Once set, every press of the Home button brings them back to it, and each time is an ad impression. No in-app purchases; Play labels it "Contains ads." All the money comes from ads.
How the traffic built up
| Date | Cumulative installs (est.) |
|---|---|
| 09-25 | About 5k |
| 10-08 | About 89k |
| 10-22 | About 400k |
| 11-06 | 918k |
Data from Google Play's public figures and AppstoreSpy estimates. It accelerated in early October, then settled at 25k to 50k new installs per day. Rating 4.6–4.7 from 5,000 reviews, with 150 to 300 new reviews a day. The 2-star count has stayed at 0 the whole time, which isn't natural and may mean prompted positive reviews. Unverified.
It only shows up on utility free charts in emerging markets: peaking at #22 in South Africa and #20 in the Philippines, plus Vietnam, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico and Argentina. In early November it occasionally squeezed into the overall app charts in South Africa and the Philippines, at #170 to #190. The US, Europe, Japan and Korea: no charts at all.
Where users come from
Three leads, and only one is confirmed.
Organic exposure from the utility chart (confirmed). With the same installs, it's nobody in the games chart but makes the top 30 of the utility charts in South Africa and the Philippines. If a mini-game sits honestly in the Games category, it competes with heavyweights like Brain Test (390M installs) and Tricky Prank (48.7M). Put it in Tools, and the competition becomes flashlights and cleaners.
Paid acquisition in emerging markets (inferred). No ads turned up in public ad libraries, but there are many signs: it only charts in a few low-CPI countries, daily installs are steady, and a new app from the same template, Shooting Skies Launcher, hit 800k installs within a month. There's also a Facebook page with the same name and zero posts, which looks built for ad buying.
A same-name TikTok craze (possibly coincidence). Starting in Sep 27, a TikTok filter game called "Tricky Couple Match" went viral. One account's single video got 10.3M views, timed just before this app's acceleration in early October. But those videos used TikTok's own filter and didn't link the app, so whether they drove store searches can't be told.
The users who stay are often ones who can't get away
The launcher shell brings more than exposure; it also brings passive retention. Once set as the default home screen, uninstalling is a hassle. The developer's website has nothing but terms, a privacy policy, and one substantive page: an "uninstall guide" that tells users to first switch back to their original home screen in system settings, then uninstall.
This is the key to how the model makes money, and also its biggest risk. Google Play has clear policies against "off-app ads," "disruptive ads," and "deceptive behavior." The top negative review, which describes it launching ads on its own and hiding from the app list, describes exactly this kind of behavior.
A production line, not one app
The developer is Hero Fighting Games. The store listing registers an individual in Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan, with a Gmail contact and a Wix template website. The account started out making ordinary kung fu mini-games in 2022, then switched to "XX Launcher" in 2026:
| App | Launched | Total installs | 7 new in the last day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duck Blast Launcher | 2026-02 | 6.43M | 496k |
| Pixel Monsters Launcher | 2026-02 | 5.39M | 231k |
| Makeup Challenge Launcher | 2026-02 | 3.46M | 203k |
| Tricky Couples Launcher | 2026-09 | 920k | 374k |
| Shooting Skies Launcher | 2026-10 | 810k | 636k |
| Shark Madness Launcher | — | Up to 5M+ | Delisted |
Google Play data, 11-06. These titles share word-for-word identical descriptions and only swap the game name. Shark Madness was logged at over 5M downloads on a third-party tracker. The Play listing as of Nov 6 showed 404, cause unverified. One down, the next already on the way: Shooting Skies has been live for a month and its weekly adds have already passed Tricky Couples.
Who else does this
He didn't invent it. According to public data, "game-skin launchers" were first pushed by Gamnest starting in 2025 October (Barber Salon, Gun Chase, Crazy Farmer Launcher and others, about 15.7M installs in total, filed under Personalization; Barber Salon hit #1 on Brazil's Personalization free chart). StoryLine's Water Sort Puzzle Launcher and Minirog's Pizza Tycoon Launcher are doing the same. Hero Fighting entered four months later, and has grown bigger than Gamnest.
So it's not a secret in the gray-area utility app crowd, but outside it, almost nobody knows: no press coverage, no discussion on X or Reddit, just auto-generated pages on APK mirror sites.
If it were you
The bottom line: there's something to learn here, but I wouldn't copy it. Its growth comes from three sources: category arbitrage, high-frequency ads and passive retention from the launcher shell, and bulk reskinning of listings. The second is exactly what Google's policies explicitly ban, and this same developer has already had one app pulled. Remove that, and the other two aren't enough to make a couples puzzle game pay.
Who it's for: teams that already run hyper-casual games or a utility portfolio on Play, have paid acquisition experience in emerging markets, and can absorb the whole developer account being banned.
Who it's not for: anyone with a single developer account or who wants to build a product to run long-term; anyone hoping to make money in Europe or the US (this model only pencils out where acquisition costs are low, and eCPM is low too).
How to do it (the learnable half): learn category arbitrage: the same product, checked for which category has the lowest chart threshold in which countries. Learn batch testing of "one shell, many trending themes," picking themes from hot mini-games on the game charts and TikTok (duck shooting, pixel monsters, makeup challenges, and couples puzzles have all been validated). Don't learn the other half: auto-launching, off-app ads, hidden icons, prompted reviews.
How to acquire users: small-budget paid acquisition in emerging markets (South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil), using utility chart rankings to catch organic installs; follow TikTok's hit mini-games for themes, and keep icons and names close to popular search terms.
How long the window lasts: depends on when Google does a bulk cleanup. Right now Gamnest's and Hero Fighting's series are both still live. Once they're pulled in batches, the window closes.
Signs you've read it wrong: ① Hero Fighting's other Launchers get pulled one after another in the next month or two. That would mean this path is blocked, and even category arbitrage needs to be handled carefully. ② The reverse: it and Gamnest keep releasing new apps, individual titles keep climbing into the millions of installs, and the accounts stay safe. That would mean enforcement is looser than expected, and the business is steadier than it looks.

Why Tricky Couples Launcher (com.herofightinggames.tricky.couples) took off
The short answer: it isn't really a launcher product. It's a couples-themed brain-teaser / Tricky puzzle hyper-casual game wrapped in an Android launcher shell, then filed under TOOLS. This brings three advantages: the Tools chart threshold is far lower than Games; once set as the default home screen, users see it on every Home press, adding ad impressions; and users find it harder to uninstall. The developer is an individual from Pakistan, Hero Fighting Games. The same template had already been copied into 2026+ "XX Launchers" by 5, with about 17M installs in total. So its success comes from this model and assembly-line copying, and the product itself has almost no differentiation.
1. Basic data
- Released: 2026-09-10 (googleplay library
app.released,released_reset=False); current version updated 0.3,2026-10-22; labeled "Contains ads," no in-app purchases (app_snap). - Global cumulative installs: 917,532 (2026-11-06), last 7 days +374,459 (googleplay
app_profile). - Curve since launch (AppstoreSpy estimates, googleplay
app_day_ext): 09-25 about 5 thousand → 10-04 about 34k → 10-08 about 89k → 10-13 about 197k → 10-22 about 400k → 10-27 about 540k → 11-06 about 918k. It accelerated in early October and has held at 2.5–50k per day since late October. - Reviews: grew from 3,215 at 10-29 to 4,981 at 11-06, adding 150–310 a day, average rating 4.69. The star distribution has 2-star at 0 throughout (for example 11-06 is [122, 0, 228, 543, 4051]), which isn't natural and may mean prompted positive reviews. Unverified.
- Chart history (googleplay
chart_rank): only charted on emerging-market TOOLS free charts, including South Africa (ZA, peak #22), the Philippines (PH, peak #20), Vietnam, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, and Argentina; from 11-02 it occasionally entered the ZA / PH overall app charts at #170–#193. No charting record in the US, Europe, Japan, or Korea. - Developer: Hero Fighting Games. The Play page lists the developer as Syed Inayat Ali Zaidi, located in Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan, with a gmail support address and a Wix template website. The site has only an "uninstall guide," terms, and a privacy policy (Play detail page; herofighting-games.com). AppBrain shows the account active since 2022, with early work on ordinary games like Superhero Kung Fu; AppGazers lists 10 apps (appbrain.com/dev, appgazers.com search summary).
2. The same developer's copy portfolio (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)
| App | Launched | Total installs | 7 new in the last day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duck Blast Launcher | 2026-02-23 | 6,429,669 | 496,015 |
| Pixel Monsters Launcher | 2026-02-17 | 5,387,973 | 231,329 |
| Makeup Challenge Launcher | 2026-02-26 | 3,456,425 | 203,231 |
| Tricky Couples Launcher | 2026-09-10 | 917,532 | 374,459 |
| Shooting Skies Launcher | 2026-10-08 | 807,463 | 636,353 |
| Shark Madness Launcher | Delisted | AppBrain recorded 5M+ | — |
These apps have identical descriptions, only the game name changed. Shark Madness Launcher's AppBrain listing says "had 5,000,000+ downloads" (past tense), and 2026-11-06 opening its Play page returns 404, which means it's been delisted (possibly by Google, reason not verified). So this is a batch production line: once one is pulled, a new game goes up in its place. Shooting Skies has only been live for one month and already has more new installs per day than Tricky Couples did in 7 days.
3. Competitors
- Same play (game-as-launcher shell): Gamnest runs Barber Salon / Gun Chase / Crazy Farmer / Grass Puzzle Launcher and others, starting from 2025-10, about 15.7M installs combined, in the PERSONALIZATION category. Barber Salon reached #1 on Brazil's Personalization free chart. StoryLine has Water Sort Puzzle Launcher and 2248 Home, Minirog has Pizza Tycoon Launcher Plus, and both of these sites are on blogspot. By the database's count, this play first took off with Gamnest in 2025-10, and Hero Fighting followed in 2026-02 and went bigger.
- Regular games in the same theme: all in the Games category, e.g. Brain Test (390M installs), Tricky Prank: Brain Quest (48.7M, +1.18M in 7 days), Tricky Brain: Annoying Puzzle (10.8M, +1.56M in 7 days), Couple Life 3D (68.7M). They're two orders of magnitude bigger than Tricky Couples, but in the Games category they compete for chart spots with these top products.
- Real launchers: Transsion HiOS / XOS (about 930M installs each, driven by preinstalls), Launcher OS, various "OS 27 / Liquid Launcher" iOS-style launchers, Niagara, Smart Launcher. They sell home-screen functionality, whereas Tricky Couples' home-screen features (wallpapers, color schemes, icon shapes, gestures) are templated add-ons.
- Bottom line: the "couple puzzle" theme has plenty of competitors, and the "launcher" shell has plenty of competitors too. Its edge is combining the two and placing the result in a category with less competition.
4. Where users come from
- Paid acquisition: probably, but no direct evidence. Our Meta ad library has no ads landing on the herofightinggames package name. Google's ad library only tracks products on its watchlist, and this one isn't on it, so there's nothing to find. The TikTok ad library only covers Europe, and it doesn't advertise there. Indirect evidence: it charts only in markets with very low CPI like South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil and Indonesia; new installs run steadily at 2.5–50k per day; and the same template took a new title (Shooting Skies) to 800k installs in one month. All of this fits batch-buying through Google UAC or ad networks in tier-three markets. Verdict: unverified.
- Organic traffic from charts: the installs needed to reach the top 30 in the TOOLS category in these countries are far lower than for the Games charts. Once it climbs into the top 20–50 of the tools chart, it keeps generating store views (chart_rank).
- A same-name TikTok wave (possibly coincidence): from 2026-09-27 to mid-October, a filter game called "Tricky Couple Match / couple pair match" was popular on TikTok. supermarkawaiii has one video with 10.3M views and another with 1.74M views (TikHub search), and the timing overlaps with this app's acceleration in early October. But these videos are TikTok effect filters and don't link to this app. Whether it picks up traffic from searches for "tricky couple" is unverified.
- Facebook page: an empty page called "Tricky Couples Launcher" (facebook.com/p/Tricky-Couples-Launcher-61594184290166) with no posts, looks like it was set up for ads.
- No press coverage, X discussion or Reddit threads (x-radar search for "tricky couples" in the past 60 days returns 0 results); just auto-generated pages from mirror sites like APKPure, Softonic and FileHippo.
5. Why users stay, and where the money comes from
- Ads are the only monetization (Play lists ads, no in-app purchases). AppGazers' estimate of its IAP revenue below $5K is consistent with this.
- The launcher shell is the core of monetization: once set as the default home screen, users see it every time they return to the home screen, giving far more ad impression opportunities than a regular casual game. The most-liked negative review on Play (61 likes) reads: "Acts like a virus. Randomly starts and displays ads… it didn't show up under my app list. They really try to hide it." The developer's website even has an "Uninstall Guide" page that tells users to first switch the default home screen in settings before they can uninstall. This suggests that a large share of retention is passive (users can't uninstall it, or don't know how).
- The game itself is shallow: the most-liked comment (143 likes) says "cleared it in minutes, need more levels," so content gets used up quickly. Another negative review says "not good for children." With a rating of 4.7 where almost all the highly-liked comments are negative, plus a 2-star distribution of 0, the rating should be taken with a grain of salt.
- Ad revenue is unverified. eCPMs in tier-three markets are low, but launcher impression frequency is high, so each user's value can cover a very low local CPI. That's probably why this template keeps getting copied.
6. Was differentiation why it took off?
There's no product-level differentiation. The real "edge" is in the distribution structure:
- Category arbitrage: put the game in the TOOLS category to avoid head-to-head competition on the Games charts and gain exposure on the tools chart;
- Launcher shell: use the default home screen to get high-frequency ad impressions and passive retention;
- Batch-copying the template: one launcher codebase paired with different hit hyper-casual themes (duck shooting, pixel monsters, makeup challenges, couple puzzles, shooting), at very low reskin cost; when one is pulled, the next goes up.
These three points are why it has worked. They're also its weak spots: Google Play has "disruptive ads / off-app ads" and "deceptive behavior" policies, and the same developer's Shark Madness has already been delisted, which shows these apps can be wiped out in batches at any time.
7. How many people have seen it
Few people know about it yet: no disclosed revenue, no press or X coverage, only auto-generated pages on APK mirror sites. But the "game-as-launcher" play is already being run by several players (Gamnest, StoryLine, Minirog), and it's no secret in the gray-area tool-app circles.
8. Worth borrowing / uncertain
- Takeaways: on Play, do category arbitrage (put a game or tool in a less competitive category); use system entry points like the default home screen and lock screen to raise ad impression frequency; run one shell with several trending themes, launch in batches and test in batches; buy traffic in emerging markets with low CPI and monetize with ads. But a launcher shell plus off-app ads carries clear policy risk, so I wouldn't copy the "hide the icon, push off-app ads" part.
- Unknowns: whether it buys ads and on which channels (no ad library evidence); how much ad revenue each user brings in; why Shark Madness was delisted; whether the "Tricky Couple Match" filter wave on TikTok brought it search volume; whether the 2-star rating of 0 is inflated by fake reviews.
