# 751 installs a week squeezed Hitomi into Korea's comics chart at #13: the full story behind the name "Hitomi"

**What it is** A wrapper comic reader that makes money from ads. Its name borrows from the adult fan-fiction site hitomi.la, and it is one of more than twenty packages a small UK company has put out under borrowed site names, using four developer accounts.

**Why it took off** hitomi.la gets huge traffic in Korea and has been blocked. People searched the store for "hitomi"; a same-named rival, September, was taken down, and Korea's comics category chart has a very low bar. A few hundred installs a week was enough to reach #15.

**D** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the borrowed name. If you want to learn from it, learn its keyword picking and testing: find demand where the original site is blocked and the store has no official app, build a legitimate reading or tool product, and test search volume cheaply on small-country category charts.

D grade: small scale, ads only. It is itself a copycat, and at least several other groups are putting out the same shell. All its growth rests on someone else's trademark. The previous same-named app was taken down within two months, and followers get nothing that lasts. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-14 · 11-07 installs 5,191

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Hitomi : Manga & Comics is an Android comic reader, listed in July, with no updates since. It has no ratings and only 5,191 total installs, yet it sits at #13 on Korea's Google Play free comics chart, with official platforms that have hundreds of thousands or millions of installs right beside it. It doesn't win on product. It wins on a word borrowed for the title. Behind it is a small UK company that has spread more than twenty similar packages across four developer accounts. Below: why the word is valuable, how this kind of shell makes money, and why you shouldn't copy it.

### September 29, a same-named app was taken down

In 2026 September 29, a comic app called "Hitomi La : Read Manga & Comic" on Google Play was taken down. Its developer was ManzaStudio. Two months after launch it had collected 3,100 installs, and its best rank was #22 on Korea's comics chart (per AppBrain and AppWinners records).

Another app with an almost identical name took over its spot. Hitomi : Manga & Comics, from developer BrightAxisDigital, launched in Jul 14. From 8 to September it added twenty to fifty installs a day, and from October it grew to 50–110 a day (third-party estimates). On Nov 6 it ranked #13 on Korea's free comics chart: the app ranked #12 above it was 애니툰 (766k installs), the one below was 코넥트 at #14, and #16 was Shueisha's Manga UP! (8.93M installs). It added 751 installs that week.

Two same-named apps, and both peaked in Korea. That is no coincidence.

### What it is

Open the store page and the five screenshots show the same dark interface: "Hitomi" in the top left, with "Trending Now" and "Most Watched" below, and covers for 《I Level Up Alone》, 《Dressing Doll Falls in Love》, 《I Want to Become the Shadow Ruler》, and 《That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime》. These are popular titles from official platforms, and this developer probably doesn't have licenses for them (inference). The description is a generic template, "Hitomi is a modern manga reader…". The content rating is "Everyone", labeled "Contains ads", with no in-app purchases.

The version number has been stuck at the build released in Jul 15 1.0.0. The privacy policy was copied from a sports app and still contains phrases like "teams, leagues, or matches". We did not install the app to verify what content it actually shows.

### Why Korea, and how big the word is

"Hitomi" was not picked at random. hitomi.la is one of the largest adult fan-fiction sites in the world. A third-party traffic tool estimates its August visits at about 650M in 2026, ranking roughly #50 globally, and **#6 in Korea** (Semrush basis; another tool, SpyMetrics, gives a figure an order of magnitude lower, and we have not verified which is accurate).

The site has been blocked by Korean regulators for a long time. namu.wiki has a dedicated entry, dcinside and Naver blogs are full of workaround guides, and a YouTube video titled roughly "How to watch 히토미 (VPN)" has 132k views. Lots of people want to see it, and few can reach it directly, so people search the app stores for "hitomi" looking for an app that works as soon as it's installed.

Almost nothing in the store can catch that search. hitomi.la has no official app, the same-named Hitomi La was taken down in September, and what's left is this one. The search volume that word brings is enough to push an empty shell to the top 15 on Korea's low-barrier category chart. It ranks #19–25 in Germany, and sits at #50–86 in more than a dozen countries including India, Poland, Turkey, and Southeast Asia, again because those small category charts have low barriers.

### Who made it: one company, four accounts, more than twenty packages

BrightAxisDigital's developer page lists 11 packages in total: StoryToon, Mangahome, MangaHive, Manga Freak, MangaFlow, Mangadna, Manga Kakalot, Mangaball, Toonily, 3hentai, and Hitomi. Apart from StoryToon, every name is the name of a pirated comic site or adult site. The package names follow one pattern, `com.<site name>.apphdhh<random letters>`, and the descriptions are the same template.

Following the ad configuration file (hosted on a free netlify subdomain, 5,032 lines, wired to AdMob, AppLovin, BidMachine, and other ad networks) and the privacy policy paths, we found three more accounts using the same setup:

| Account | Representative packages | Installs |
|---|---|---|
| GoldenDev Studio | Tachiyomi, Mangazone, kotatsu, Bato, Manga ROCK, plus the video piracy shells Flixer and Anikuro | Tachiyomi 68k, Mangazone 41k |
| VexoraLabs | comix, Manga milion | comix 28k |
| VelmoraDigital | kagane, Weeb Central, Toongod | Not counted individually |
| BrightAxisDigital | Hitomi and 11 others | Hitomi 5,191 |

The company on the store page is ON A TANGENT LTD, based in Oxford, UK. UK company registration shows it **was incorporated in 2025 September 27** , and the contact email is a personal Gmail address. Within this group, Hitomi ranks in the middle-to-lower range. The package that gets the most installs borrows the name of the open-source reader Tachiyomi.

This playbook isn't unique to them. At least several other Play account groups, including Daniela Zimmer Studio, VerityLabsCodes, and QuietCodeWorks, are spreading packages using the exact same method: a borrowed site name, ad config hosted on netlify, and privacy pages on Google Sites. Each package gets a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of installs.

### Where the money comes from

All ads. Each app costs next to nothing to build: one template, new name, new icon, ship a 1.0.0 and walk away. A single app's monthly ad revenue at this install volume is likely tens to hundreds of dollars (estimate, unverified). The whole matrix adds up to a few hundred thousand installs, and what drives it is the number of apps, not any one app being good.

The cost is also out in the open. Packages that borrow someone else's trademark can be removed from Play at any time; the earlier Hitomi La lasted only two months. So the business has to keep publishing new packages, replacing each one as it dies. We see no sign of paid acquisition, influencer outreach, or social media promotion: in nearly 30 days on X, no post mentioning it turned up, and its daily installs are flat, which doesn't look like paid buying.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Hitomi La : Read Manga & Comic | 3,100 installs, 9-29 taken down | Identical playbook, already dead |
| The hitomi.la website itself | About 650M visits a month (estimate) | The real content source, blocked in Korea |
| Community tools such as Hitomi Downloader | Community-level | Can really access the original site's content, but has to be downloaded separately and can't be found in the store |
| The same-group Tachiyomi / Mangazone / comix | 68k / 41k / 28k | Same operator, different borrowed names |
| Official Korean platforms such as Naver Webtoon, Lezhin, and Toptoon | Several hundred thousand to 46M installs | Copyrighted and paid; this app is just borrowing a spot at the bottom of the chart |

### What's worth learning

The product itself has nothing worth learning. Three things are worth noting:

1. **Look for words with search demand but no official app.** A word with high traffic, a blocked or removed original site, and no official app in the store leaves search demand unmet. Using someone else's trademark directly gets you removed; the compliant route is to build legitimate content or tools around that demand.

2. **Small countries' small category charts have surprisingly low barriers.** #13 on Korea's comics chart takes only 751 installs a week, and German and Polish category charts are similar. To test whether a word has search volume, a few hundred installs will show you how the rank responds.

3. **The structure of the group.** Multiple accounts, one shared ad setup, one word per package, and a single package dying doesn't affect the whole. That is why it survives, and also why it can be wiped out all at once at any time.

### If it were you

**D. Understand it, but don't copy it.** It didn't break out. It borrowed the name of a blocked adult site and showed up briefly on a chart with a very low bar. 5,191 installs and ad revenue means very little money. It is itself a copycat, and at least several other groups are putting out the same shell. And all its growth rests on someone else's trademark, so takedown is only a matter of time.

**Who it suits:** People already working on app store listings who want new keywords to test demand. They can borrow the approach: check which sites are blocked in which countries, check whether the store has an official app, then test search volume cheaply on small category charts.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone trying to build a product that lasts, that earns users and reputation. Borrowing the names of pirate sites and adult sites doesn't produce ratings or retention, and it doesn't produce anything you could raise money on or sell.

**What to do instead (if you want something from this at all):** Don't borrow the name, borrow the need. For example, Koreans looking for alternative entry points to get around the block are really after "a good comic reader that works as soon as it's installed." The legitimate version is a localized reading tool, an aggregator of legally free official chapters, or a comics-related utility app, with a title that uses generic need-based keywords instead of someone else's trademark.

**How to acquire users:** Store search. Use small-country category charts to test keywords first. Whichever keyword gets you onto the chart with a few hundred installs and climbs the ranks is the one to double down on.

**When to get in:** There is no window to race. Packages like this typically don't survive more than a few months, and this category turns over faster than you can publish.

**What would show this read is wrong:** ① Hitomi lasts past 2027 January without being taken down and passes 50k installs, which means these borrowed-name packages live longer than assumed, and the group's economics need recalculating; ② packages in the same group start accumulating large numbers of ratings and positive reviews, which would mean they really deliver content users stick with, not just an empty shell; ③ hitomi.la gets unblocked in Korea, the value of this word drops to zero overnight, and Hitomi's rank falls immediately.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hitomi La : Read Manga & Comic(ManzaStudio) | Android | 2026-07 | 3.1K installs, 2026-09-29 taken down; AppWinners records its best rank as #22 on the Korea Comics chart | Same play, also riding the Hitomi name, with its best rank in Korea too; it was taken down. Hitomi now picks up the search traffic it left behind |
| hitomi.la (the site being borrowed from) | Web | 2010 era | About 650M monthly visits, #6 in Korea (Semrush, 2026-08) | The real source of adult doujin content. The App only borrows the name; whether it can show the site's content was not verified |
| Community tools such as Hitomi Downloader and Hitomi Search Plus | Open source | Around 2020 through to today | Community-level | Can actually use hitomi.la content, but it has to be downloaded separately and isn't on Play. Hitomi App wins by working right after install and showing up in search |
| Sister apps from the same operator: Tachiyomi / Mangazone / comix: Manga & Comics | Android | 2026-07 | 68k / 41k / 28k installs | Same template, same app-ads.txt, just borrowing different site names. Hitomi ranks mid-to-low in the portfolio |
| Naver Webtoon, Lezhin Comics, Toptoon and other licensed Korean platforms | Android | 2010 era | Several hundred thousand to 46M installs | Licensed and paid. Hitomi has no content rights, it just grabs a spot at the tail of the charts |

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Store search: title borrows hitomi.la** : the title and package name com.hitomi.* both say 'Hitomi'. hitomi.la ranks #6 in Korea and was blocked by Korean regulators, so Korean users have strong demand for alternative entry points. The App's best rank is in Korea (#13), and the best rank of the taken-down App of the same name was also in Korea

- **Verified** **Category chart exposure** : 11-06 ranks #13 on the Korea Comics free chart with only 751 installs a week. The apps around it have hundreds of thousands to millions of installs, all licensed platforms. It is charted in 15 countries (googleplay chart_rank)

- **Verified** **Portfolio spam** : 4 developer accounts (BrightAxisDigital, GoldenDev Studio, VexoraLabs, VelmoraDigital) share the same app-ads.txt (aquamarine-profiterole-a87c0c.netlify.app), the same email and the UK company ON A TANGENT LTD (2025-09 registered in Oxford). The database has 14 of them, and the developer pages show more

- Inferred **Paid acquisition / content creators** : 0 posts on X; daily installs of tens to a hundred, which doesn't look like paid acquisition

## Hitomi: Manga & Comics (com.hitomi.apphdhhiiitomii) research report

> Channel: Google Play · Developer account BrightAxisDigital · Listed 2026-07-14 · Written 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

Hitomi is not a product that 'broke out'. It is a reskinned comic reader that borrows the name of the adult doujin site **hitomi.la** . The operator is the UK shell company **ON A TANGENT LTD** , which runs 4 developer accounts and has put up 20 packages that borrow pirate-site names. It reached #13 on the Korea Comics free chart for only two reasons:

1. hitomi.la has huge traffic in Korea and was blocked by regulators, so people search the store for 'hitomi'.

2. The Korea Comics free chart has a very low bar: 751 installs a week is enough to rank #13.

Very small scale (5,191 installs), no content, no differentiation. What is worth learning is the keyword choice and portfolio tactics. The product itself has little to learn from.

### 1. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative global installs | 5,191(11-06) | Google Play library app_profile |
| 7 new in the last day | +751 (about 100 a day on average) | Same as above |
| Historical curve | 08-04 275 → 09-01 1,241 → 10-01 about 2,500 → 10-28 4,437; 8 through September about 20–50 a day, and from October on about 50–110 a day | AppstoreSpy estimate (app_day_ext) |
| Rank | Korea Comics free chart 10-29 #16 → 11-06 #13; Germany 19–25; India 51–72; charted in 15 countries | googleplay chart_rank |
| Rating / reviews | None | app_snap |
| Version | 7-15 has not updated since releasing v1.0.0 | app_snap.updated_at |
| Monetization | Labeled Contains ads, no in-app purchases | Play Store page |

**How low the chart bar is** : 11-06 On the Korea Comics free chart, #12 is 애니툰 (766K installs), #14 is 코넥트 (9,906), #16 is Manga UP! (8.93M). Hitomi's 751 installs a week put it right among these licensed platforms. On the German chart it sits at #24 too, between licensed platforms like Tapas and Marvel Unlimited.

### 2. Who made it: a portfolio, not a product

- The BrightAxisDigital developer page has 11 packages in total: StoryToon, Mangahome, MangaHive, Manga Freak, MangaFlow, Mangadna, Manga Kakalot, Mangaball, Toonily, 3hentai, Hitomi. Apart from StoryToon, all the names are ready-made pirate manga sites or adult sites (Play developer page, Jina scrape).

- Using Hitomi's app-ads.txt URL (`aquamarine-profiterole-a87c0c.netlify.app/app-ads.TXT`) and privacy policy path (`sites.google.com/view/<name>/on-a-tangent-ltd`), a reverse lookup in the database finds another 3 developer accounts using the same setup:
    - **GoldenDev Studio** : Tachiyomi (68,284 installs), Mangazone (41,210), kotatsu, Bato, Manga ROCK, MangaNest, Atsumaru and more. It also makes pirate film and TV shells like Flixer and Anikuro.
    - **VexoraLabs** : comix (28,433), Manga milion.
    - **VelmoraDigital** : kagane, Weeb Central, Toongod.

- The company info on the Play store page says ON A TANGENT LTD, address 80 Godstow Road, Wolvercote, Oxford (Play store page and Exa search results). UK Companies House number 16746857, **2025-09-27 registered** (Endole). The contact email is a personal Gmail address.

- The package name format is uniformly `com.<site name>.apphdhh<random letters>`, and the descriptions come from the same template. The privacy policy was copied from a sports app and still says 'teams, leagues, or matches'.

- app-ads.txt has 5,032 lines in total, including ad networks like BidMachine, AdMob and AppLovin, showing it plugs into ad aggregation platforms.

**Hitomi ranks mid-to-low in this portfolio.** The packages with the most installs in the portfolio borrow the names of Tachiyomi (an open-source reader) and Mangazone.

### 3. Why Korea: the weight of the word 'Hitomi'

- hitomi.la is one of the largest adult doujin sites in the world. From 2026 to August it got about 6.5–680M visits, ranking #48–50 globally, **and #6 in Korea** (Semrush, via isp.webinfotex.com). SpyMetrics' figure of 2026-09 is 65.5M (different methodology; we have not verified which is accurate).

- The site has long been blocked by Korean regulators, and users rely on VPNs, DPI bypasses or tools like 'Hitomi Downloader' to get in (the namu.wiki 'Hitomi.la' entry, bypass tutorials on dcinside and Naver blogs, and the YouTube video 'how to watch hitomi (vpn)' with 132K views). So Koreans have a strong incentive to look for an App that works right after install.

- Searching "hitomi" on Play turns up almost no rivals: this is the only title with Hitomi in its name. The earlier same-name app, Hitomi La : Read Manga & Comic (ManzaStudio, com.hitomila.mangareadingnowasmanhwa), was live for 2 months with 3.1K installs before **2026-09-29 taken down** (AppBrain). Its best rank was also #22 on the Korean comics chart (AppWinners). **Both same-name apps peaked in Korea, which suggests the traffic came from searches for the term, not from the product itself.**

- The timing fits too: after Hitomi La was taken down in September, Hitomi's daily installs in October rose from 30–60 to 50–110 (AppstoreSpy estimate). This could also just be chart exposure snowballing on itself, and there is no way to tell them apart.

### 4. Growth tactics breakdown

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Store search: title borrows hitomi.la | Title and package name both use Hitomi; best rank in Korea; the earlier same-name app did the same | Confirmed |
| Category chart exposure | #13 in Korea, #24 in Germany, charted in 15 countries in total, with only 751 installs a week | Confirmed |
| Matrix spam installs | 4 accounts and 20 packages sharing one ad setup and privacy template | Confirmed |
| Paid acquisition, creators, social | x-radar: 30 posts in the last 0 days; daily installs are flat, which doesn't look like paid acquisition; ad libraries not checked | Not found |

**Where the money comes back from** : each package costs close to 0 to develop (swap the template, publish 1.0.0 and walk away), and income comes from ad aggregation platforms paying impressions. A single package may only make tens to hundreds of dollars a month (estimated from installs, **not verified** ). Across the whole portfolio the installs add up to hundreds of thousands, and the risk is bulk takedowns by Play. So the model requires constantly publishing new packages, replacing each one that dies.

### 5. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How Hitomi differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hitomi La : Read Manga & Comic(ManzaStudio) | Android | 2026-07 | 3.1K installs, 9-29 taken down | Exact same play, already dead |
| The hitomi.la website | Web | Already existed | About 650M monthly visits, #6 in Korea | The content source being borrowed |
| Hitomi Downloader, Hitomi Search Plus, etc. | open source / desktop | 2020 to date | Community-level | Really works off the original site's content, but isn't on any store |
| Sister apps Tachiyomi / Mangazone / comix | Android | 2026-07 | 68k / 41k / 28k | Same operator, different names borrowed |
| Other shell-app matrix (Daniela Zimmer Studio's Comix 49k, VerityLabsCodes' Comix / Ridibooks / Asura Scans, QuietCodeWorks' Tachimanga / ToonGod, etc.) | Android | 2026-06~07 | Thousands to tens of thousands | Same playbook: borrowed site name + netlify app-ads.txt + Google Sites privacy page, just a different set of people running it |
| Korean official (Naver Webtoon, Lezhin, Toptoon, etc.) | Android | 2010 era | 200k to 46M | Paid official apps; Hitomi just grabs a spot at the bottom of the chart |

### VI. Differentiation

No product differentiation: same template, no ratings, no updates after launch. The only real difference is the borrowed name. hitomi.la has three traits: huge traffic, blocked, and no official app on any store. That's why it showed up on the Korean comics chart. **The name is the whole reason it ranked** , and it's fragile: an earlier same-named app was pulled from the store within two months.

### 7. What's worth borrowing

1. **Picking keywords** : find brands or site names with heavy traffic, that have been blocked or delisted, and that have no official app, then target them in store search. The method is general, but using someone else's trademark gets you delisted; the compliant route is an official alternative or a tool.

2. **Testing demand on small charts** : small category charts like Korea or Germany can be cracked with a few hundred installs, a cheap way to test whether a term has search volume.

3. **Matrix structure** : many accounts, shared ad setup, one term per app. If one app dies, the whole operation is unaffected. The cost is that the whole batch can be pulled at any time.

### 8. What's still uncertain

- What's actually inside the app (whether it really connects to hitomi.la or serves adult content) was not verified by installing it.

- Share of users by country is unknown (Play only gives global installs); "mostly Korean users" is inferred from the rankings.

- Ad revenue and whether it runs paid ads were not confirmed.

- hitomi.la's traffic differs by an order of magnitude between Semrush and SpyMetrics.
