1.5 stars, 1.15M installs: how an AI home-redesign app was built with ad spend
What it is Snap a photo of a room, pick a style, and AI generates a redesigned render. Free, monetized entirely through ads.
Why it took off A Vietnamese-linked matrix that published 93 packages started pushing it with Meta ads from Oct 8; it went from 47k to 920k in three weeks. Users didn't find it on their own.
CHow you could approach this Don't copy this package; learn the method. If you can run ads, apply the "one template across many packages, shared pages, before-and-after creatives" approach to another theme. If you really want the home-design niche, build a subscription tool that keeps the original room layout and outputs a shopping list, or pivot to B2B for design firms and agents.

Room Design AI: Home Decor hit 1.15M installs in three months but holds a 1.5-star rating. It didn't get there on product; it ran a proven playbook: the same code published under several package names, paid acquisition through Facebook Pages with fake personas, and interstitial ads that start paying back the moment a user installs. Below is how the playbook works, how the money adds up, which parts to learn and which to avoid.
3 minutes, 10 push notifications
In Oct 13, a user left a one-star review on Google Play:
"This app is garbage. In the first 3 minutes it sent me at least 10 notifications. After I finally got through the pile of pop-up ads, the designs it made were the exact opposite of my room's layout... my hallway to the bedroom got a wall and a few windows added."
By Nov 6, this review had 118 helpful votes. The one above it, from Aug 26, had 203 helpful votes: "The first screen is an ad, every tap is an ad, and I haven't even started using it." The third: "This isn't an App, it's an ad vault. I didn't see the actual content for 5 minutes, one ad after another, like I installed adware."
Those three reviews are the entire user experience. It has 797 ratings on Play, 687 of them one-star, averaging 1.48 (Google Play, 11-06). Yet on the same day its cumulative installs were 1,150,428, still rising 7k over the last 229 days.
What it is
The feature in one line: snap a photo of a room, pick a design style (Nordic, Japanese, industrial...), and AI produces a redesigned render. The store copy reads "Upload your room photo, try different styles, and find new ideas before you start a project."
The store page is labeled "Contains ads" with no in-app purchases. In other words, it charges nothing; all revenue comes from ad impressions. Version 1.0.3, and no updates since Oct 15.
When installs took off
It launched on Aug 1, and the first two months were flat: a few hundred to a couple thousand installs a day, reaching 7k cumulative by Oct 47 (AppstoreSpy estimate).
Then came Oct 8. That day it added 38,835 installs, and it kept climbing: 10-12 cumulative 150k, 10-15 350k, 10-17 610k, 10-27 920k. It grew twentyfold in three weeks.
At the same time, ad library showed Meta ads running for it. Three ad-page names, all look randomly generated: "Hernandez Rudd Sibby", "Delsie Broderickljq", "Scarborough Norenefjh". Followers from 79 to 447, and each page was running 70–80 ads at once. Every creative is a video, and the copy is always the same line: "FREE APP / Design Your Dream Home with AI. Download Now!!!" Tapping goes straight to Play. The earliest ad we can see pointing to it is from Sep 28, and then 10-08, 10-09, 10-22 new ones kept coming in. A new ad went live in Oct 8, the same day installs took off.
10-15 to 10-17 was the steepest stretch (+266k over two days). The few Meta ads we can see don't fully explain that. It probably also ran Google app ads at the same time. Not verified.
What we can confirm: there are no signs of organic traffic. Searching it on X turns up nothing. On TikTok, searching "AI room redesign" returns mostly prompt tutorials for "redesign your room with ChatGPT / Nano Banana" plus a few branded competitors. Not one video is about it. The only charts it made are the free Art & Design chart, and only in low-bar storefronts like France, Singapore, Nigeria and Hong Kong.
Now the budget is being pulled back. After Oct 29, its rank fell across every store: Hong Kong from #8 to #41, France from 19 to 36, Japan from 53 to 139 (Google Play category charts). Daily new installs also dropped from 40–50k at the end of October to 12k in Nov 6.
Who's behind it: a matrix that published 93 packages
The developer name on Play is "AMST FINANCIAL LLC". Searching it turns up a small US company in Indiana doing ATM and card processing, with nothing to do with AI home design. Scroll down to "About the developer" and it lists a different company, LUMEA VITALITY LTD, with an address in a self-storage unit on the outskirts of London. UK company records show it was incorporated in February 2026. The support email is a personal Gmail, and the website sits on a free netlify subdomain: homedecor710y13.netlify.app.
The display name and the legal entity don't match. Packages like this are usually bought or rented. What really gives it away is how the URLs are named: topic + three digits + y + serial number. Searching Google Play for this pattern turns up 93 apps, under 51 different developer names, using 43 email addresses, with 168M installs in total and 7M new installs in the last 6.13 days (11-06). The topics are all old monetization-by-ads staples: AI photos, tarot, Quran and prayer times, blood pressure logs, PDF readers, TV remotes, GPS location. A string of Vietnamese names shows up in the emails. The developer names vary wildly: US LLCs, German UGs, various "foundations", personal pseudonyms.
The "homedecor710" topic alone has at least 6 packages:
| Package | Under whose name | Launched | Installs | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dream Home AI - Decor Studio(y5) | TheND | 06-10 | 434k | +9k |
| Home Interior - AI Designer(y12) | Dien Tu Teach | 07-02 | 160k | +5k |
| Room Design AI (y13, the subject of this piece) | AMST FINANCIAL LLC | 08-01 | 1.15M | +229k |
| Design Home - AI Home Makeover(y4ru) | INFINITE HILLS PRODUCTIONS INC | 08-17 | 63k | +10k |
| AI Home Design: House Decor(z2) | Gladys Bishop | 10-12 | 420k | +407k |
| AI Interior Styler: Room Ideas(z11) | Fox Total Home | 10-22 | 22k | — |
Data: Google Play, 11-06.
The playbook is clear from the table: same codebase, swap the package name and the developer account, publish five or six times, then add money to whichever one has the best ad return. Room Design AI is the best performer in the y series, so it got the budget. The budget has now shifted to z2, launched in October, which is adding installs at the ten-thousands-per-day level. The three fake-name pages weren't set up just for it either. They were also running ads for other apps in the same category, the main one being Home Decor: House Makeover (7.76M installs, 7 pages, 227 ads). Pages are shared across the matrix, and budget is allocated per app.
Where the money comes from
No in-app purchases, only ads: an interstitial on launch, another one with every tap, and push notifications to pull people back after they install. How much ad revenue one install brings in is, by common ad rates, roughly a few cents to a dime or so (estimate). The install cost has to stay below that number, so it buys cheap regions and cheap Meta traffic. The strategy is "squeeze every ad out of an install once". It isn't trying to keep anyone.
A 1.5-star rating hurts store conversion, but bought traffic doesn't care much about ratings. People tapping the ads go straight to the install button.
Who it's competing with
This topic is already crowded. The ones actually making money are the subscription-based ones:
| Peers | Launched | Scale | How it makes money |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planner 5D | 2015 | 54.6M installs, Top Grossing #2 in Brazil's Home & Decor | Real 3D floor-plan tool plus AI, subscription |
| Home AI(HubX) | 2024-04 | 19.9M installs, has charted Top Grossing | Subscription, branded |

| AI Remodel(PulseApps) | 2025-05 | 8.04M installs, charted overall Top Grossing at #46 in the UAE | Subscription |
| NestAI | 2026-06 | 10.3M installs | Same netlify-site-plus-sock-puppet-account playbook, one order of magnitude bigger |
| RoomGPT / Interior AI / DecorAI | From ¥2023 | RoomGPT claims 4M users | Web app, subscription or credits |
| ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude edit the image directly | 2025–2026 | huge | Free |
Data: Google Play 11-06; RoomGPT's user count is self-reported.
The last row is the killer. TikTok is full of videos saying "upload your room photo to ChatGPT and paste this prompt". The big labs now give this away for free. That's also why Room Design AI's ads work so well: users have already been taught that "take a photo and get a redesign", and before-and-after videos get clicks. But for the same reason, an app that only does this feature will struggle to collect money, unless, like Planner 5D, it's building a real tool.
If it were you
C. You can learn a complete paid-acquisition monetization playbook from it, but copying this app itself isn't worth it.
Its success doesn't come from the product. It comes from a matrix that already has 93 packages, shares ad pages, and reallocates budget by return. A solo developer copying an AI redesign app can't get that scale effect, and in this category they face three pressures at once: established subscription players, copycats running the same playbook like NestAI, and the big labs giving the feature away free.
Who it's for: people who already run ad-monetized apps, have Meta ad experience, and have a test budget they can afford to lose. What's worth learning here is the method, not the topic: one template shipped as several packages to race each other, shared ad pages, and before-and-after creatives.
Who it's not for: indie devs who want a long-term product and organic growth from word of mouth, or people who have never run ads and can't calculate what one install is worth. With 1.5 stars and ad blasting, a package's lifespan is a few months. This one is already being handed off to z2.
How to do it: if you do want to enter this topic, don't copy it. Look at DecAI and AI Remodel instead: build a subscription product that fixes what this one gets wrong. Reviews say "the generated image doesn't match my room layout". What actually earns money is "keep the original structure, only swap furniture and materials", plus a step that produces a shopping list, dimensions, or quotes, which ChatGPT image editing can't do. Or change the audience: B2B tools for renovation firms, real estate agents, and guesthouse owners, charged per use or per month.
How to acquire users: whichever route you pick, you'll need paid acquisition. The creatives are vertical before-and-after videos, one style per ad. Start by testing 20–30 creatives with a small budget in one or two low-cost countries. Only scale once you can get the cost per paying user below the first month's subscription price (inference).
When to enter: there's no hard deadline. This topic's window isn't closing on a schedule. It's being squeezed by the big labs' free image editing. The later you enter, the harder it is to sell subscriptions.
What would mean we got it wrong: ① z2 and the newer packages keep scaling one after another, and the matrix keeps adding packages to this topic. That would mean pure ad monetization is paying off well here and the math is worth redoing. ② The reverse: if a month from now Room Design AI and z2 both drop below a few thousand daily installs and fall off the category charts, the matrix itself is pulling out, and the paid-acquisition math for this topic no longer works. ③ If ChatGPT or Gemini ships a full "photograph a room, generate a render, add shopping links" feature, apps that only do this will get even harder to sell.

Bottom line
This didn't come from the product. It's the standard playbook of a Vietnamese-linked "ad monetization matrix": wrap AI room-redesign renders, publish under sock-puppet developer accounts, buy traffic through fake-name Facebook pages (Meta spend starts 2026-09-28, and from 10-08 installs jumped from a few hundred a day to tens of thousands a day), then recover the cost with aggressive interstitial ads. Rating 1.48 stars, 86% one-star. Retention and word of mouth are both poor. The 1.15M installs were bought with ad spend, so they drop as soon as the ads stop, and it's already dropping.
1. Data profile (our googleplay library, 2026-11-06)
- Cumulative installs 1,150,428; +229,246 in the last 7 days. 797 ratings, average 1.48; star split [1★ 687, 2★ 0, 3★ 7, 4★ 15, 5★ 78] (app_snap 11-06). Ratings are only 0.07% of installs.
- Tagged "Contains ads", no IAP (offers_iap = False, iap_range empty) → monetized by ads alone. No updates since version 1.0.3,10-15.
- Install curve (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates; from 10-29 on is our own collection):
- 8-24 to 10-07: slow climb, a few hundred to one or two thousand a day; 10-07 cumulative 47,481.
- Sudden spike from 10-08: 10-08 +38,835 that day → 10-12 cumulative 152k → 10-15 346k → 10-17 612k → 10-21 796k → 10-27 921k.
- 10-29 → 11-06: about ~29k a day on average, and slowing (10-31 +90k/2 days, 11-02 +80k/2 days, 11-05 +21k/2 days, 11-06 +12k).
- Charts: appeared only on the ART_AND_DESIGN free category chart, across 10 stores (fr sg ng hk tw sa kr jp id th). Every store has been falling since 10-29: Hong Kong 8 → 41, France 19 → 36, Singapore 19 → 38, Japan 53 → 139, Thailand 101 → 165 (chart_rank). Never charted on any overall or Top Grossing chart.
- Our database has no scraped reviews for it (0 rows in the review table). The three most-upvoted reviews on the Play page are all one-star, saying "the splash screen is an ad, every tap brings up an ad", "10 notifications in 3 minutes", and "can't get into the article for 5 minutes, feels like ad malware" (Play store page, 2026-08-26 / 10-13 / 10-14, marked helpful by 203 / 118 / 97 people respectively).
2. Developer identity: sock-puppet accounts + a Vietnamese-linked matrix
- The developer name shown on Play is "AMST FINANCIAL LLC". Searching it turns up a small company in Indiana, USA, doing ATM and card acquiring (amstfinancial.com). The "About the developer" section on the store page, however, says LUMEA VITALITY LTD, with an address at a self-storage unit in Stanmore, London (Unit 5066 Self Storage House). Companies House shows the company was incorporated 2026-02-24, with a single director of Indian nationality (Companies House 17050083). The support email is a personal gmail ([email protected]), and the website and privacy policy sit on the free netlify subdomain
homedecor710y13.netlify.app. The display name and the legal entity don't match, which most likely means a bought or rented developer account. AppBrain shows this account active since 2025, with 9 apps in total (AppBrain search summary). - The naming pattern gives the matrix away: developer websites in the Google Play library that follow
<topic><three digits>y<number>.netlify.appshow up on 93 apps, under 51 different developer accounts, using 43 email addresses, with 168M installs combined and +6.13M over the last 7 days (counted via regex on the googleplay library, 11-06). The topics are all paid-acquisition monetization staples: AI photo apps, tarot, Quran and prayer times, blood pressure and blood sugar logs, PDF readers, TV remotes, GPS location, EMF detectors. The emails include a lot of Vietnamese names (hung.tk67899, nguyendung.tk8899, tuxvietnam, hoangtran68889, supperhuy6, VIETBASE, Dien Tu Teach). The developer names are all over the place: US LLCs, German UGs, assorted "foundations," and personal pseudonyms. It's a textbook sock-puppet matrix. - homedecor710 has at least 6 clones in the matrix: | Package | Developer | Launched | Installs | 7-day | |---|---|---|---|---| | homedecor710y5 → Dream Home AI - Decor Studio | TheND | 2026-06-10 | 434k | +9k | | homedecor710y12 → Home Interior - AI Designer | Dien Tu Teach | 2026-07-02 | 160k | +5k | | homedecor710y13 → this one | AMST FINANCIAL LLC | 2026-08-01 | 1.15M | +229k | | homedecor710y4ru → Design Home - AI Home Makeover | INFINITE HILLS PRODUCTIONS INC | 2026-08-17 | 63k | +10k | | aihomedecor710z2 → AI Home Design: House Decor | Gladys Bishop | 2026-10-12 | 420k | +407k | | aihomedecor710z11 → AI Interior Styler: Room Ideas | Fox Total Home | 2026-10-22 | 22k | — | The playbook is clear: same code, swap the package name and the developer account, ship several times; whichever package has the best paid-acquisition ROI gets the budget. This one is the best performer in the y series; starting in October, budget visibly shifted to the new z2 package (from 10-31 to 11-03, up on the order of +100k per day, app_day_ext).
3. Where users come from: Meta paid acquisition (confirmed)
- metaads library: 3 Facebook pages under fake names are running ads for this app. "Hernandez Rudd Sibby" (385 likes, 81 active ads now, 508 in total), "Delsie Broderickljq" (447 likes, 89 active ads), "Scarborough Norenefjh" (79 likes, 79 active ads). All are video creatives with the same copy, "FREE APP / Design Your Dream Home with AI. Download Now!!!", linking straight to the Play listing.
- The earliest ad we saw landing on this app is 2026-09-28 (Delsie), followed by 10-08 (Scarborough), 10-09, and 10-22 (Hernandez). 10-08 is exactly the day installs jumped from a few hundred a day to tens of thousands, and the timing lines up.
- These same pages are running ads for other apps in the same matrix:
com.decor.home.inspiration.design(Home Decor: House Makeover, MINDWAVEAI, 7.76M installs; 7 pages, 227 ads, developer email [email protected], which suggests a Vietnamese HUST background and the same group),com.ai.home.design.interior.decor,com.homedecor.trends.modern.furniture.pro,com.ai.home.smart.house.living.pro, plus the caller ID appcom.callerid.phone.number.locator(HEYFLOW, email [email protected], the same email Tada Corp uses in the matrix). The pages are shared across the matrix, and budget is split by package. This product got only 7 ads (3 running now), while the main package is the MINDWAVEAI one. - There's a gap: the peaks between 10-15 and 10-17 (+125k and +266k across two observation intervals) can't be explained by the few Meta ads we saw alone. Google App Campaigns (UAC) was probably running at the same time, but the googleads library only tracks products on its list and didn't turn it up, so this is unverified. Nothing in the TikTok ad library either.
- No sign of organic traffic: X (x-radar, 60 days) has no hits. Searching the category keywords on TikTok returns mostly "edit your room with ChatGPT / Claude / Nano Banana" prompt videos and brands like DecorAI, none related to this app. The charted stores are France, Singapore, Nigeria and Hong Kong, low-bar category charts, which fits paid acquisition propping up the category chart.
4. Where the money comes from
No IAP, ads only: app-open interstitials, an interstitial on each tap, and push notifications pulling users back (the "10 notifications" from the reviews). Based on AdMob blended eCPM estimates, each install is worth a few cents to a dozen-plus cents (unverified). Acquisition cost per install has to stay below that to break even, so the spend goes to low-cost stores outside France and to cheap Meta traffic. The play is to squeeze ad impressions out of each install, not to chase retention. A 1.5-star rating hurts store conversion, but paid traffic doesn't depend much on ratings.

Takeaway: the space is already crowded, with the leaders being subscription tools (Planner 5D, HubX, DecAI, AI Remodel). This app has no feature differentiation. Its only "difference" is the monetization (ads only, no subscription) and the acquisition method (a sock-puppet matrix plus fake-name Meta pages buying traffic).
6. Why it broke out
- Paid acquisition: Meta fake-name pages started running at the end of September, 10-08 installs jumped, and the two line up in time (metaads, app_day_ext).
- Matrix playbook: the same template was published as 6+ packages (homedecor710 y4ru/y5/y12/y13/z2/z11). This app is the best performer, so it got the budget.
- Good topic choice: "snap a photo and change the decor style" is a demand that TikTok taught the mass market from 2025 to 2026, via ChatGPT / Nano Banana. The ad creatives are easy to shoot and get high click-through.
- Ad-only monetization: no paywall, ads start showing as soon as it's installed. It doesn't need retention to break even in low-cost stores.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No press coverage, no discussion on X, no disclosed revenue, only APK mirror sites re-hosting it.
- Copycats: mainly its own matrix copying itself (z2 is already taking over, and more aggressively). Outside the matrix there are similar-playbook apps like NestAI and MINDWAVEAI.
8. What to borrow
- Batch-publish "topic × number × sock-puppet account", pick the package with the best ROI, then add budget. Official sites use netlify subdomains, which costs nothing.
- Meta pages are shared within the matrix, with one page running ads for several apps at once, using before-and-after video creatives to get cheap installs.
- Pick a demand that AI giants have already educated the public about and that has strong visual impact (decor makeovers, AI photos, tarot), then build a light wrapper.
- The downside: 1.5-star ratings and ad-bombing mean a short lifespan. For a long-term business, study the subscription-plus-Top Grossing route taken by DecAI / AI Remodel.
9. Uncertain
- Unverified whether the 10-15 to 10-17 peak came from Google UAC.
- Ad revenue, eCPM and ROI are all estimates, unverified.
- The actual entity behind the matrix (which Vietnamese company) is unconfirmed. The names in the emails are only leads.
- AppBrain's "9 apps" figure wasn't checked app by app (the AppBrain page failed to scrape).
