"Everything other apps charge for is free here": a no-ads prayer app built by a Turkish developer, and the dozen-plus rivals crowded into the same chart
What it is A solo-built, ad-free Islamic lifestyle app: prayer times, Quran, qibla, tasbih, short videos and AI Q&A all in one, earning from subscriptions for themes and sounds.
Why it took off Turkish users were fed up with ads from the established prayer apps. This year a wave of new apps went the opposite way with "no ads + subscription," and Elif is one of them; users mostly find it through store search, and expanding into Indonesia this November sped things up.
CHow you could follow Don't build another all-in-one Turkish version. Copy what the biggest player, Quran Widgets, did: go deep on widgets alone, keep the core free and charge only for customization, and enter a language market not yet saturated with the same template, launching before the February Ramadan 2027.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-12 · 11-07 installs 38,682
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Turkish indie developer Gökhan Kaya launched an Islamic lifestyle app called Elif in June 2026: prayer times, Quran, qibla, tasbih, short videos and AI Q&A, all packed into one app, with not a single ad. Four months later it had 39k installs on Google Play, adding five hundred to over a thousand a day, and the iOS version ranked #11 in Turkey's Reference free chart. The numbers aren't big. What's worth watching is the wave behind it: in 2026 Turkey saw a dozen-plus Islamic apps built on the same "no ads + subscription" template, and Elif is just one of them, sitting in the second tier. Below: why this template works, where Elif's users come from, how it makes money, and whether there's still room for you to get in.
Three reviews, four months apart
On Jun 2026, 21, a user named Ahmtky47 on the Turkish App Store gave Elif five stars with one line: "Diğer uygulamaların ücret aldığı her özellik ücretsiz" (every feature other apps charge for is free here). Elif's official Instagram account later posted that review as a screenshot, and it became the app's slogan.
July 27, another user, Katip65, put it more bluntly: "The well-known app out there has ads that drive you crazy. I hope you don't change once you get big."
October 30, a one-star review appeared: "Ücretli uygulama boşuna yüklemeyin" (Don't waste your time installing a paid app).
These three reviews pretty much sum up this category's story this year: users have been tormented by the established apps' ads for years, a wave of new apps came in promising "100% ad-free," and then they made money from subscriptions.
What it is
An "all-in-one Islamic lifestyle" app. The core is prayer times (precise to the district, with a countdown to the next prayer and reminders with an optional muezzin voice), qibla (compass and camera-based AR qibla) and the Quran (translations, transliteration, multiple reciters, real-page layout with tajweed marking, and a memorization mode). On top of that it stacks a lot: tasbih counting, hundreds of prayers, kaza (make-up prayer) tracking, Hajj guides, biographies of the Companions, "Ilham," a vertical short-video feed like Instagram Reels, group Quran reading for family and friends, and an AI Q&A called "Elif'e Sor" (Ask Elif), which states it follows Sunni positions and cites sources.
Users most often praise how comprehensive it is. In October 21, one review listed a long string of features and concluded "it's basically an Islamic social media platform"; in September 24, someone wrote "no need to install several apps anymore, it's all in one"; in October 18, someone wrote "I used to waste dozens of minutes scrolling on social media, now I scroll Elif."
The developer is one person. The App Store developer name is Gokhan Kaya personally, while on Play it's his company Kaya Teknoloji Geliştirme; his personal website is a freelancer page offering WordPress and mobile development outsourcing. Three other small apps under the same developer account never took off.
How big it is
| Metric | Source and date | |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play cumulative installs | 30,346(10-29) → 38,682(11-06), +6,082 in 7 days | Google Play installs |
| Play daily new installs | September 150–500, then steady at 500–1,200 from October on | Third-party estimate |
| Play rating | 4.7 stars, 526 reviews | Play Turkey page, 11-06 |
| Play charts | Turkey Lifestyle free chart #25–31; entered Indonesia Lifestyle free chart from 11-02, #111 → #53 | 11-06 |
| iOS ratings | 603 reviews worldwide, 4.6 stars; Turkey store 428 (10-28) → 583 (11-06) | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS charts | Turkey Reference free chart #11, Top Grossing #40–67 | App Store,11-06 |
The curve is a steady climb, not a spike. There was a small pulse from October 3 to 7, peaking at over three thousand installs in a single day; the cause wasn't found (guess: store featuring or a paid push). The iOS version launched first in June 10, with Play a month later; updates are very frequent, with 5 versions shipped in one week from October 28 to November 4.
Where the money comes from
Free to download, no ads, monetized with a subscription called Elif Premium. The part worth copying is what it locks: prayer times, Quran, and qibla are all free. Paid only buys the "looks" and "sounds": color themes, more reciters and adhan voices, replacement icons. The November release also added 20 paid widget skins. In a religious app, locking core features draws bad reviews. Locking decoration doesn't.
Pricing is still being tested. On the Turkish App Store page, the monthly plan shows three tiers at the same time: ₺49.99, ₺99.99, ₺129.99. Annual shows three tiers too: ₺199.99, ₺249.99, ₺499.99 (11-06). On Play, the in-app purchase range for Nov 3 was lowered from $1.99–10.99 to $0.79–10.99.
Revenue is not public. The iOS reference chart entry bar for 40–67 is low, so monthly revenue is likely in the low thousands of dollars (inferred, not verified).
Why now: a whole wave of people are building the same thing
Prayer times + Quran + qibla apps are one of the most crowded categories in the Muslim market. The established players look like this (Google Play installs, 11-06):
| Product | Launched | Installs | How it makes money |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muslim Pro | 2011 | 149M | ads + subscription |
| Salatuk | 2012 | 83M | Ads |
| Ezan Vakti Pro | 2011 | 39.6M, #3 free in Turkey's Lifestyle category | Ads |
| Muslim App (Turkish company) | 2015 | 34.1M | Ads |
These apps built their numbers over more than a decade and monetize with ads, which is where user resentment comes from. In 2026, a batch of new Turkish apps appeared using the same reverse template: no ads, subscription, good design, widgets and lock screen. These are Elif's real competitors (Turkish App Store ratings and reference chart rankings, 11-06; Play installs, 11-06):
| Product | Launched | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Quran Widgets: Verses & Duas | iOS 2026-02 | rating 20,680,7 days +1,538, #4 Reference Top Grossing; Play 72k installs |
| Nurlu - Islam Guide | iOS 2026-03 | rating 9,982, #6 Top Grossing |
| Ruhun Gıdası: Kur'an-ı Kerim | 2026-04/05 | iOS rating 4,147, #8 Top Grossing; Play 171k installs, #1 free in Turkey's Books category |
| Rahman: Islam Super App | iOS 2026-07 | rating 4,697, #13 Top Grossing |
| Esma: Prayer Times & 99 Names | iOS 2026-04 | rating 399, #9 Top Grossing |
| Sebat: Namaz Vakti ve İrade | Play 2026-08 | 56k installs |
| Ayahfy | Play 2026-10-22 | 60k installs in two weeks (inferred: paid acquisition) |
| Ezan Vakti: Reklam Yok! | Play 2026-10-13 | 8,750 installs, named outright "Prayer Times: No Ads!" |
Among the top 15 grossing apps in Turkey's iOS Reference chart, 7 are Islamic apps launched this year. Elif's rating count is about 1/35 that of Quran Widgets and 1/17 that of Nurlu.
The most useful point in the comparison: the biggest, Quran Widgets, does only one thing, a home and lock screen widget that shows a new verse every hour. Elif does everything, and its reputation is good, but breadth hasn't turned into growth. Elif is now adding widgets too (hourly verse widget, Live Activity countdown, paid skins), which copies the leader's approach.
Where users come from
Mostly app store search. Its Turkish title is literally "Elif: Namaz Vakti, Kur'an" (prayer times, Quran), the subtitle stacks "Ezan, Kıble, Zikir" (adhan, qibla, dhikr), all terms Turkish users search when they look for this kind of app. The App Store's "customers also bought" section lists it alongside Rahman, Esma, and Nurlu. The install curve is steady with no spikes, which fits organic search (inferred, fairly confident). Some claim it runs Apple Search Ads, unverified.
Other channels are weak. I found no TikTok or X content about it (Elif is a common women's name, so searches are very noisy). No media coverage. The download buttons on the official site elifmuslim.com link to "#" (11-06 opened). The official Instagram account posts screenshots of user praise, but its impact is unclear.
November's acceleration came mainly from expanding to new markets. It now supports 7 languages (Turkish, English, Arabic, Indonesian, Urdu, Bengali, French). The English iOS page specifically says it calculates using the UK Moonsighting Committee method, close to London mosque timetables, and offers Hanafi and Shafi'i options for Asr. The update notes say "overseas city support (for expats)." The result was Indonesia: iOS Indonesia rating count went from 39 to 142 in 9 days, and it ranked #12–18 in the Reference free chart. On Play, it entered Indonesia's Lifestyle free chart starting Nov 2. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, but willingness to pay there is lower than in Turkey, so how much revenue the new users bring is still unclear.
If it were you
One-line verdict: "No ads + subscription" as a rebuild of the old ad-funded prayer app has been proven to work, but Turkey is already packed. Building another all-in-one copy of Elif makes it the 10th-plus Elif.
Who it suits: indie devs who are Muslim themselves, know the fiqh details (Asr timing across schools, each country's religious affairs algorithm, how to calculate makeup prayers), and can write strong content in one language. Also suits people who already have mature widget or habit-app code and want a new audience.
Who it doesn't suit: people who aren't confident in religious content. Users of this category are extremely sensitive to accuracy and stance. One wrong prayer time, or an AI giving a wrong answer on a fiqh question, and the bad reviews arrive. It's also a poor fit for anyone counting on paid acquisition to pay back quickly, because the average order value and conversion rate can't support expensive ads.
How to build it: don't build everything. Copy Quran Widgets' single-point focus: make the widgets, lock screen, and Live Activity as good as possible, keep core features free, and only charge for themes and sounds. Pick a language market not yet filled by new no-ads apps: Malaysia, Egypt and Gulf Arabic, Pakistan's Urdu, and Turkish and North African diaspora in Europe. Start by counting how many Islamic apps launched this year in each country's App Store Reference Top Grossing chart.
How to acquire users: lead with app store search. Put the exact phrases locals search for, like "prayer times", "qibla", and "Quran", into the title and subtitle. Reviews that say "the old apps have too many ads" are a ready-made selling point, so put it on the first screenshot. Ramadan is the biggest traffic and conversion window for this category each year. Ramadan in 2027 starts around Feb 8 (calculated from the Islamic calendar). Launch and build your rating count before then.
Deadline: be live in your target market by mid-January 2027. Miss this Ramadan and you wait another year, while new apps using the same template keep appearing every month (in October, several more appeared on Turkey's Play store, including Ayahfy and Ezan Vakti: Reklam Yok!).
Signs you've misread the market: three or four new no-ads Islamic apps from this year already sit in the top 20 of the target market's Reference Top Grossing chart. Or, two months after launch, ratings climb fast but almost nobody buys the subscription (meaning this market only accepts free). Or established players like Muslim Pro or Ezan Vakti Pro launch cheap ad-free subscriptions and take back the "no ads" selling point.

- Inferred App store search (ASO): the Turkish title "Elif: Namaz Vakti, Kur'an" is itself a high-frequency search term. Apple's "customers also bought" lists it alongside Rahman, Esma, and Nurlu. The Play install curve is steady with no spikes.
- Confirmed Market expansion / multiple languages: 7 languages. The iOS copy describes the UK Moonsighting algorithm and the Hanafi option, and the update notes mention expat city support. Indonesia iOS rating count went from 9 to 39 in 142 days. From 11-02 on Play, it entered Indonesia's Lifestyle chart (111→53).
- Inferred Apple Search Ads: a recalled card claims appfigures shows it running ASA. Not independently verified in this report.
- Confirmed Official Instagram account: instagram.com/p/Dee7OsAiPoz posts user praise screenshots. Its impact is unknown.
- Inferred TikTok / X / media / Meta ads: TikHub, x-radar, metaads, and tiktokads all returned no matches. The official site's download buttons are "#", so it isn't a traffic funnel.

Bottom line
It didn't take off on its own. It rode the middle of the 2026 wave of Turkish indie developers building "no-ads, subscription Islamic lifestyle apps". Users had long resented the big ad-funded apps like Ezan Vakti Pro and Muslim Pro. A group of Turkish indie devs used the same template, "100% no ads + all-in-one + widgets + subscription," and collectively pushed into iOS reference charts. Elif is among the more complete of them, but clearly smaller than the leaders (iOS Turkey rating count 583, versus 20.7k for Quran Widgets and nearly 10k for Nurlu). Acquisition relies mainly on app store search (ASO). I found no evidence of TikTok, X, or media spread. The new users of the past two weeks came mainly from expanding to Indonesia.
1. Data: how big it really is
Google Play (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Cumulative global installs 30,346 → 38,682, +6,082 in the last 7 days (about 870/day).
- AppstoreSpy's estimated curve since launch (app_day_ext): installs started picking up around 2,600 in mid-September, with daily gains of 150–500 in September. In October there was a small pulse on days 3–7 (10-03/04 about 1,864/day, 10-07 about 3,575 in one day). After that it stabilized at 500–1,200/day, with one day of about 2,000 in 11-03. This is steady climbing, not an explosion. The cause of the pulse is unverified (possibly store featuring or a single ad push).
- Charts: Turkey Lifestyle free chart #25–31 (since 10-29). From 11-02 it entered Indonesia's Lifestyle free chart, 111 → 68 → 53.
- Play Turkey page: 4.7 stars, 526 reviews, rated "10 B+" (10k+ tier) (Jina read of play.google.com, 11-06).
- No ads (ad_supported=False), with in-app purchases. The IAP range 11-03 was lowered from $1.99–10.99 to $0.79–10.99 (prices being adjusted).
App Store (appstore library)
- The iOS version 2026-06-10 launched first (a full month before Play), and it ships updates very often: 10-28's 1.1.9 to 11-04 1.1.14, 5 versions a week.
- Turkey: rating 428 (10-28) → 583 (11-06), +138 in 7 days. Reference free chart #9–11, Reference Top Grossing #40–67.
- Indonesia: rating 39 → 142 (rating count doubled 3.6 times in 9 days, +95 in 7 days). Reference free chart #12–18, Top Grossing #53–141. Indonesia is currently the fastest source of new users.
- iTunes lookup global rating 603, average 4.59.
- Subscription prices (Turkey App Store page): Premium monthly ₺49.99 / ₺99.99 / ₺129.99, annual ₺199.99 / ₺249.99 / ₺499.99. Multiple tiers coexist, clearly a live price A/B test.
2. Competitors: the same thing is crowded with players

(iOS data from the appstore library, Turkey store Reference Top Free / Top Grossing charts 2026-11-06; Play from the googleplay library.)
Verdict: Elif sits in the second tier of this wave. It has only 1/35 the ratings of Quran Widgets and 1/17 the ratings of Nurlu, and it trails five or six rivals on Top Grossing rank. Having no competitors isn't the issue here: the problem is that there are too many competitors, and they all use the same template.
3. Growth tactics: where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Store search (ASO) | The Turkish title is simply "Elif: Namaz Vakti, Kur'an" with the subtitle stacking "Ezan, Kıble, Zikir"; Apple's "Customers also bought" section pairs it with Rahman, Esma and Nurlu; the Play install curve is smooth with no spikes, consistent with organic search traffic. | Inferred, fairly strong |
| Market expansion / multilingual | 7 languages. The iOS copy specifically mentions the UK Moonsighting Committee calculation and the Hanafi/Shafi'i options (targeting UK diaspora), and the release notes say "Yurt dışı şehir desteği (diaspora)". Its iOS rating in Indonesia went from 9 days 39 to 142, and from 11-02 on Play it entered the Indonesia charts. | Confirmed |
| Apple Search Ads | The recall card claims appfigures shows it bought ASA; I could not independently open the appfigures page to verify this. | Not verified |
| Meta ads | No matching Page in the metaads library (it only tracks advertisers discovered through keywords, so no match does not mean no ads). | Not found |
| TikTok ads / creators | No mapping in the tiktokads library; TikHub searches for "elif uygulaması namaz", "elifmuslim" and "elif namaz vakti" returned no relevant videos (Elif is a common female name, so the noise is high). | Not found |
| An official account posts user review screenshots (post instagram.com/p/Dee7OsAiPoz: "Diğer uygulamaların ücret aldığı her özellik ücretsiz"). | Confirmed to exist; influence unknown. | |
| Website SEO | elifmuslim.com has Turkish/English pages and an FAQ, but the App Store / Google Play download buttons link to "#" (11-06 read), so the website is not a valid acquisition channel. | Confirmed weak. |
| X / media | x-radar search: 90 posts in 0 days; web search finds no media coverage. | None |
| Prompted reviews | App Store reviews: 30+ reviews, almost all 5-star, with a highly consistent tone ("Allah razı olsun"). But this is the typical review style of Turkish users in this category, so it can't be used to conclude the reviews are fake. | Not verified |
4. Why it took off
- It feeds on resentment toward the big incumbent apps: several App Store reviews say outright that "the well-known app's ads are unbearable" (07-27), "features other apps charge for are free here" (06-21), and "finally, no more being held hostage by those big apps" (07-03). "%100 Reklamsız" is the brand's core selling point.
- All-in-one + content-driven: it's not just prayer times, it also packs in the Mushaf, tasbih, kaza (missed prayer) tracking, the "Ilham" vertical short-video feed, Mecca live streams, an Islamic knowledge base, group Quran reading (Hatim), and the AI Q&A "Elif'e Sor" (with sources, aligned with Sunni positions). Reviews repeatedly call out "several apps merged into one" and "video like Instagram reels".
- Widgets + lock screen: a Quran verse widget that changes every hour, and a Live Activity countdown. The November update also added 20 paid widget themes. This is exactly the play that the leading Quran Widgets used to get started, and Elif followed suit.
- Fast iteration, one developer doing everything: 5 iOS versions a week, with user requests like Diyanet alignment, AR qibla and word-by-word Quran shipping quickly.
- Expanding to new storefronts for new users: once the Turkish market was saturated with similar apps, it grew by drawing on Indonesia (the world's largest Muslim-majority country) and UK diaspora. The November acceleration came mainly from here.
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
Its difference from the incumbents (Muslim Pro, Ezan Vakti Pro) is "no ads + subscription + design + full feature set". That is why it took off, but the difference is not unique to it. It is the shared template of a whole batch of new Turkish apps from the 2026 period (Quran Widgets, Nurlu, Ruhun Gıdası, Rahman, and even the one literally called "Ezan Vakti: Reklam Yok!"). Compared with its same-batch peers, Elif's distinction is more granular: it has the most features (short-video feed, AI Q&A, community, knowledge base) and the earliest multi-language and multi-school support, rather than drilling into one thing like Quran Widgets does with widgets. Judging by results, the single-focus apps ran bigger; Elif's "big and complete" approach earned good retention and word of mouth but never became a growth engine.
6. How many people have seen it
- Revenue is not public. The founder (Gökhan Kaya; his personal site gokhankaya.dev shows a freelance WordPress/mobile developer) has not shared revenue, and there is zero discussion on X or in the media.
- But the category is already conspicuous on the store charts: in the Turkey iOS Reference Top Grossing ranking, 7 of the top 15 are Islamic apps launched in 2026. The category is "being talked about in small circles", while the product itself "isn't widely known yet".
- Followers: it is itself one of the followers. Later entrants include Ayet Widget (10-08), Nûru'l Hüdâ (10-31), Ezan Vakti: Reklam Yok! (10-13), Ayahfy (10-22) and others continue to pour in.
7. What others can learn
- In a utility category where incumbents monetize through ads and users are fed up, rebuilding it as "no ads + subscription" can work in a high-frequency, habit-driven niche like religion.
- For religious apps, don't paywall core features (prayer times, Quran text). Paywall the cosmetics (themes, muezzin voice, icons, widget skins). Elif and Quran Widgets both do this, which avoids bad reviews.
- Once a market is saturated, reusing the same codebase to expand into Indonesia, Malaysia or UK diaspora is a low-cost second growth wave.
- But be aware: the Turkish market is already full of a dozen-plus same-template apps. Entering it now just makes you another Elif.
8. Uncertain
- Whether it is running Apple Search Ads / Google UAC / Meta (the recall card cites appfigures as saying it uses ASA; not verified, and our ad libraries don't cover it).
- The reason for the install spike in early October.
- Actual revenue: Turkey iOS Reference Top Grossing rank 40–67, a low bar. Estimated monthly revenue is in the low thousands of USD or less (unverified).
- The bundle ID huzur.islamiasistan shows it was originally called "Huzur", and there is an existing Huzur (com.huzur.app / huzurapp.com). Whether they're the same team: the Play developer and email differ, and there is no evidence they are the same team or a re-skin matrix. A rename is more likely (Huzur means "tranquility", a very common name).
- Our Play library has empty ratings, but the Play Turkey page shows 526 reviews, likely a scraping issue.
