Under 9k installs, charted in the US Books Top Grossing: CrownNovel and a werewolf-novel app on the same production line
What it is An English romance novel reader app. Werewolf, domineering CEO, and divorce-revenge storylines, where readers spend coins to unlock the next chapter at the best parts.
Why it took off Romance readers will pay to keep up with serials, and the book category's Top Grossing chart is easy to crack: a few hundred paying readers can push a new app into the top 40. Users were most likely bought through Facebook and TikTok ads.
CHow you could follow it A team with a romance content library that also knows how to run ads could copy the "free chapters, then a coin paywall, plus check-in and watch-ad unlocks" model, target smaller languages big companies haven't served well, or do better on the things users complain about: top-ups that actually credit, and customer service. Pure coders should stay away.

CrownNovel is an English romance reader that a developer published on Google Play in Sep 8. Readers have to buy coins to unlock the next chapter at the most gripping moments. By Nov 6, its cumulative installs were only 8,908, yet it ranked #30 to #34 on the Books & Reference Top Grossing charts in the UK, Canada, US, and Australia, sitting beside apps with tens of millions of installs. It has no real product innovation. It relies on a playbook Chinese web-novel going-global companies have long run, and several nearly identical new apps were competing for the same charts at the same time. Below: how it gets paid, where users come from, who's competing with it, and whether indie devs should follow.
A 36-person-upvoted one-star review
In Oct 4, a reader named Tessa Gregory left a review on CrownNovel's store page: "I think they should make it clear this is a pay-only reading site. I can't find any way to unlock chapters by watching ads. Check-in gave me one reward and that was it... I have plenty of reading apps with good stories on my phone, and I'm not spending money I don't have here." 36 people marked it helpful. As of Nov 6 it's still the top review on the store page (Google Play, 11-06).
Two weeks later, on Oct 18, Audrey Cole wrote about the same issue: "Just as things get good, you have to pay. You can't earn coins, you can only buy them." 27 people marked it helpful.
8 days later, on Oct 26, CrownNovel shipped version 1.2.10 with the release note "unlock chapters by watching ads and earn points" (per third-party version records). That small episode is basically the app's whole playbook: it collected money from a few willing readers behind a paywall first, then within two weeks of the backlash added "you can also read by watching ads" to keep the non-paying users.
What it is
The store description is very generic: "Browse curated titles in Discover, keep your recent reads in History, and enjoy a reader designed for long reading sessions with adjustable themes and font sizes." Not a single book title, and no mention of genre. But the latest release note gives the game away at the end: "Update now and start your next romance adventure!"
The content is the category's standard lineup: werewolf partners, domineering CEOs, post-divorce revenge and comeback, mainly for Western female readers. Payment is by coin per chapter, with in-app prices on the store ranging from $4.99 to $99.99 per tier (Google Play, 11-06). Its website crownread.net is a single page that says "Where Every Reader Wears a Crown" and "Always Free," which is the opposite of the top negative reviews on the store page.
Put simply, it's a smaller copy of web-novel apps like GoodNovel and Dreame.
How 8,908 installs got it to #32 in the US
This is a chart ranked by revenue, not downloads, and it reflects money. Nov 6, US Google Play Books Top Grossing:
| Rank | App | Total installs |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | GoodNovel | 38.9M |
| 6 | Dreame | 41.5M |
| 7 | WebNovel (China Literature) | 32.3M |
| 20 | Wattpad | 346M |
| 25 | VelloraNovel (listed 9-22) | 5,376 |
| 32 | CrownNovel | 8,908 |
| 33 | FlipNovel | 33k |
Two reasons it climbed this high. First, romance web-novel readers pay: serials paid chapter by chapter, and spending dozens of dollars in a single evening isn't unusual (estimated). The biggest coin pack sells for $99.99. Second, the book category's Top Grossing chart sets a much lower bar than games or the overall chart. A few hundred paying readers can push a new app into the top 40. On the US chart, CrownNovel climbed from #10-29 39 to #11-06 32, and on the same day it appeared in category charts in 24 countries. Singapore, India, Turkey, Vietnam, Nigeria, and the UAE all had it around the sixtieth spot.
But it doesn't rank high on the Top Free chart (#89 in the US store), and it has never charted on the overall chart. It's an app with few downloads and high revenue per user. No public figures show how much it earns, and there's no way to verify what 30 on the chart translates to in daily revenue.
Where users come from: almost certainly paid acquisition
You barely see it in public channels. TikTok search doesn't surface its videos, nobody talks about it on X, there's no press coverage, and no Reddit threads. The store description isn't stuffed with keywords, so it doesn't look like it gets organic search traffic. Yet after its first US chart appearance on Oct 15, it spread across 13 countries' category charts within a week.
Installs started climbing in mid-October. Third-party estimates put cumulative installs around 10-18, about 1,300,10-26 to 4,400. Google Play shows the install count as 11-06 at 8,908, averaging about 420 a day over the last week. The store's data safety section says it shares location, in-app activity, and device IDs with third parties, which is the usual wording for apps running ad and attribution tools.
Everyone in this space knows the standard approach: run ads on Facebook and TikTok for "rejected werewolf partner" or "she took my crown, I'm back" chapter screenshots and plot short videos, with clicks going straight to the store or a landing page. GoodNovel's Facebook page has plenty of these posts. I didn't find CrownNovel's own ad creatives, so "paid acquisition" is an inference, but a strong one.
There's another odd number: from 10-29 to 11-06, its rating count went from 460 to 1,114, while installs only grew by about 4,500. That's roughly one rating for every 7 new users, with 1 rating it, when a typical app sees one or two percent. Ratings came in at a steady 60 to 138 a day, and most had no written review. The likeliest explanation is an in-app prompt asking for five stars in exchange for coins (inferred), though review farming can't be ruled out. That's how the store rating has held at 4.3 to 4.4.
Who's behind it, and who else is doing the same thing
The Google Play developer account is called burgerpzhone, registered with a gmail address, and the registered entity is Yunnan Yanmengliang Technology Co., Ltd. in Kunming. A personal-name account, a gmail address, and an obscure small company is the standard setup for this kind of clone-app business: one reader template, a new name and icon make a new app, and several accounts run ads at once, with budget going to whichever one pays back.
In the same quarter, several new apps with nearly identical setups appeared:
- VelloraNovel: listed Sep 22, developer account shenggui with gmail, registered to Haikou Shenggui Network Technology Co., Ltd.; 5,376 installs, #25 on US Books Top Grossing, #19 in the UK.
- ReignNovel: listed Sep 16, account Guanxinghe with gmail; 662 installs, #152 on US Top Grossing.
- Novellea: Werewolf Romance: listed Sep 21, Hong Kong entity; 29k installs, #10 on Italy Books Top Grossing.
- Add FlipNovel, NovelMira, and NovelSpark to the list.
I haven't verified whether these are the same team or share the same outsourced template. Separately, there's also an unrelated app with the same name, CrownNovel (crownnovel.com), run by a different company. It has a web version, comics, short dramas, and an author backend, and its iOS version launched in Oct 19. It has nothing to do with this app.
Its problems
- Paid but never credited, and no one to contact: "I bought coins to keep reading and they never showed up. Contacted customer service and got no reply. There's no way to link my records with a Google login. Totally a scam app!!!" (Nickie Miller, 10-11,32 people marked helpful)
- Called free, but actually paid: the website says "Always Free," but the store has a coin paywall.
- Abnormal ratings: the ratio of rating count to installs is too high. Google often purges ratings and even removes clone apps, and personal accounts with gmail addresses can only survive so many bans.
If it were you
One-line verdict: you can learn from it, but don't go head-to-head. The category does make money, but it's an industrial business built on content plus paid acquisition, and a solo indie dev has neither.
Who it suits: a team that already has an English (or Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Polish, etc.) romance novel library, whether through signed authors or licensed translations, plus someone who can run Facebook and TikTok ads and knows their payback period, and tens of thousands of dollars ready to test creatives. Chinese web-novel going-global companies and veterans of novel platforms going solo fit best.
Who it's not for: people who only know how to code. The reader template is easy for anyone to build. The hard part is content and traffic: without hundreds of serialized, hooky stories, the paywall just sits in front of an empty shelf, and if you can't run paid acquisition, you won't get a single install out of 8,908 tries. It's also a bad fit for anyone hoping to build word of mouth slowly with one app. In this space the play is to launch several, test fast, and swap out whatever doesn't work, because any single app's shelf life is short.
How to do it (if you really have the content): copy its design. Make the first few chapters free, put a coin wall at the key plot points, and offer two free routes, check-in and watch-ad unlocks. CrownNovel got flak precisely because it lacked both at first. Another route is picking a language big companies haven't served well. CrownNovel added Polish in Oct 29, and by Nov 6 it was already #44 on the Polish Books Top Free chart, higher than its free-chart rank in the UK and US, showing that romance readers in smaller languages are looking for books (which languages big companies haven't seriously tackled, you'll have to check the country charts yourself). And a third option is doing better on what it does badly: top-ups that always credit, email replies from real people, and no hidden subscriptions. In a category full of one-star reviews, that alone is a selling point.
How to acquire users: Run drama creatives on Facebook and TikTok. Chapter screenshots, short videos in the style of "rejected partner" stories, targeted at women 25 to 55. Test dozens of creatives with a small budget first, then scale the ones that pay back within 30 to 60 days (inferred, the standard playbook for this category).
Is there a window? No clear deadline. This niche has been hot for years and wasn't kicked off by a single event, so the window won't suddenly close, but it won't get emptier either.
What would prove this read wrong? ① CrownNovel and VelloraNovel drop out of the top 60 of the US Books chart before December, or get pulled from the store. That would mean paid acquisition for these shell apps no longer pays back. ② The reverse: a small team with no Chinese web-novel backing holds a top 50 spot on this chart for over two months on its own content. That would mean the content bar is lower than it looks, and the math is worth redoing.
One last note: a new app with only a few thousand installs charting in a category's top grossing list is usually not a new opportunity. It's the Nth app from one company in the same niche. Check the developer account and contact email first, then decide whether the product is worth studying.

One line
It's another shell app from a small Chinese company going global with web novels: a templated English romance/werewolf/CEO-romance reader that unlocks chapters with coins ($4.99–$99.99 in-app purchases). Paid acquisition pulled in European and American women readers with very high willingness to pay. It reached the top 30 or so in the US, UK, Canada and Australia on the low-barrier Books & Reference category chart with under 10k installs. It has no product differentiation. It worked because this category has high ARPU and a low bar to enter the category charts, and because it uses the proven Chinese web-novel export playbook: reskinned app + paid acquisition + coin paywall + check-in/watch-ad retention.
1. Data (our googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Cumulative installs: 4,443 (10-29) → 8,908 (11-06), +2,971 in 7 days. The earlier curve from AppstoreSpy: about 1,288 by 10-18, about 1,893 by 10-21, single-day +753 on 10-22, and about 4,439 by 10-26. 10-30 single-day +1,494. It started scaling in mid-October, at roughly 300–700 installs per day, with clear pulses (10-22, 10-30, 11-02). That looks like budget released in batches, not the smooth curve of organic word of mouth.
- Rating count: 460 → 1,114 (+654 over 8 days, 60–138 per day). In the same period about 4,465 new installs came in, so new ratings / new installs ≈ 15%. Normal apps usually sit at 1–3%. Only 110 ratings (10% of total) include written reviews. The histogram jumps a lot within a few days (1-star went from 0 to 25,5 in a single day, +164). This looks like aggressive in-app rating prompts (rewarding coins for check-ins or asking for five stars in a popup). Review manipulation can't be ruled out. Not verified.

- It has never charted on any overall app chart.
- Version cadence (AppInsider timeline): 1.2.7 (10-14) → 1.2.9 (10-21, "redesigned store UI, optimized rewards and daily tasks") → 1.2.10 (10-26, "watch ads to unlock chapters, earn points") → 1.3.0 (10-29, added Polish). 10-15 was its first US chart entry. 10-16–10-20 it spread to charts in 13 countries within a week.
2. Competitors
The same thing (English web novels / romance fiction with coin-unlocked chapters) is a very crowded red ocean on Google Play, dominated by Chinese companies. Most of the top 45 on the US Books Top Grossing chart 11-06 are in this category (googleplay library, v_chart):

Closer "new copycat shell apps" (launched after June of 2026, already on the Books top grossing chart, found in the library):
- VelloraNovel (com.ans.velloranovel, developer shenggui / [email protected], registered to Haikou Shenggui Network Technology Co., Ltd.): listed 2026-09-22, 5,376 installs, US Top Grossing #25, UK #19. It's almost the same playbook as CrownNovel: personal-name developer account + gmail + small Chinese company entity + 5 thousand installs to reach the top 30 in its category's top grossing list.
- ReignNovel (com.oneyeah.oasisnovel, Guanxinghe / [email protected]): 2026-09-16,662 installs, already on US Top Grossing #152.
- Novellea: Werewolf Romance (Xinyuanhui, Hong Kong): 2026-09-21,29,391 installs, Italy Books Top Grossing #10.
- NovelMira (2026-06), FlipNovel (OussDevtrac, 32,926 installs, US Top Grossing #33), NovelSpark, AnyStories, Magfic, and others.
- Name clash: there's also a CrownNovel (crownnovel.com, Android package com.crownnovel.app, iOS id6811829541, seller FLIP DIGITAL SERVICES LIMITED / FlipLabs, on iOS 2026-10-19). It offers web reading, comics, short drama and a creator backend. It is not the same company as this app.
Bottom line: there's no competitive gap here. It's a low-cost copy of a niche that others (GoodNovel, Dreame and more) already validated.
3. Growth tactics
- Paid acquisition (highly likely, no creatives found directly): The install curve is pulse-shaped. The Data safety declaration shares location, app activity and device ID with third parties (typical ad/attribution SDKs). It reached 13 national charts within a week after more than a month of almost zero organic exposure. The store description is extremely generic, with no keyword stuffing, so it isn't relying on ASO for search. The AppInsider model estimates traffic sources over the last 30 days: organic search 38% / store browse 47% / paid 15% (model estimates, and identical to VelloraNovel's numbers, so low reference value). Our metaads library doesn't track it (we only track products on our list, so not finding it there doesn't mean it isn't advertising). TikTok (TikHub search for CrownNovel / crownread): 0 videos. X (x-radar, 60 days): 0 posts. Standard practice for apps like this is running Facebook / TikTok ads with chapter screenshots of CEO, werewolf and divorce-revenge stories, linking straight to Play or through a landing page (crownread.net is a single-page download site).
- Coin paywall + check-in/watch-ad: Reviews say it outright: "you can only buy coins, check-in gave one reward, no way to watch ads to unlock" (Tessa Gregory, 10-04,36 likes; Audrey Cole, 10-18,27 likes). 10-26's 1.2.10 added "watch ads to unlock chapters," which suggests it relied entirely on the paywall for monetization early on and added rewarded ads later to boost retention.
- Ratings: New ratings are about ~15% of new installs, far above normal. This suggests rating prompts tied to rewards. High ratings (4.3–4.4) help store conversion.
- Language/country expansion: 1.3.0 added Polish, and from 11-06 it appeared on the Poland Free chart at #44.
4. Why it took off
- High category ARPU, low entry bar on category charts: English romance web-novel readers have strong willingness to pay (per-chapter coins, with top bundles at $99.99). The revenue needed to chart in book categories is far lower than in games. 8.9 thousand installs is enough to land around #30 in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. In other words, a small number of high-value paying users is enough to chart.
- A mature, industrialized playbook for web novels going global: template app + off-the-shelf translated or AI-generated power-fantasy content libraries + paid acquisition + coin wall. Around the same time, VelloraNovel, ReignNovel and other apps built on the same template launched, which suggests a batch-produced, low-cost copy model.
- Timing: Listed in September, started paid acquisition in mid-October, at the same time as a batch of similar new apps pushing up the charts. No platform event drove it.
5. Differentiation
Almost none. Its product description (Discover / History / theme and font size) is a generic reader template. The content is BookTok-style werewolf, CEO and divorce-comeback stories, no different from GoodNovel or Dreame. The only "difference" is that it's smaller, newer and cheaper. As a shell app, it spreads risk across separate independent-developer accounts and lets you test fast. Differentiation is not why it worked. It worked because of high-paying category demand plus paid acquisition.
6. Visibility
Almost nobody knows about it yet. No press, X, TikTok or Reddit discussion. It's only passively listed on third-party chart sites (AppInsider, Similarweb, AppBrain). Revenue isn't public. But this playbook is well known in China's going-global circles, and the niche is already extremely crowded.
7. Risks and issues
- User complaints: coin purchases don't arrive, customer support doesn't respond, Google sign-in fails (Nickie Miller, 10-11,32 likes).
- The store listing says "Always Free," which contradicts the in-app coin purchases.
- Abnormal ratings, with a risk of Google purging the ratings or delisting the app. A personal developer account plus gmail is a hallmark of shell apps.
8. Takeaways
- In low-barrier categories like books and web novels, high-ARPU in-app purchases plus small, targeted paid acquisition can validate ROI and chart quickly.
- Adding check-in / watch-ad unlocks on top of the coin paywall to retain non-paying users (it did this within two weeks of negative reviews).
- One template, many shell apps and accounts running tests in parallel. Scale whichever one has positive ROI.
9. Uncertain
- Whether it actually ran Meta / TikTok ads, and how much, has not been verified (no creatives found).
- Revenue scale: what a #30 category chart position translates to in daily revenue is unverified. Whether it shares a team or template with VelloraNovel and others is also unverified.
- Whether the ratings are fake is unverified.
