# A Hanoi factory's template AI speaking app: nothing new, 920k installs in three months

**What it is** An app where you practice English speaking by chatting with an AI teacher. Pick scenarios, keep daily streaks, compete with friends; subscriptions by week or year ($9.99–$59.99).

**Why it took off** Not because the product is good. A Vietnamese company with 41 apps and over 300M installs copied a template that was already proven, plugged in ready-made Google ad buying, wrote keyword titles in each country's language, and pushed store ratings to 4.6. In low-price-to-pay markets like Indonesia and Turkey, subscriptions pay back the spend.

**C** **How you could compete** Don't copy it and build another one. Go after the part it does badly: a speaking coach that actually corrects mistakes, aimed at a narrow group (people working abroad, IELTS speaking candidates, new immigrants) and a specific language pair. Acquire users first where that group gathers, using before-and-after corrections, and only buy ads once the numbers work.

C grade: subscription revenue has been proven, but this is one of the most crowded Google Play education categories over the past 2026 years, with sources like Learna and more than twenty factory apps bigger than it. Its edge is the factory's ad-buying machine and user pool, which a small team can't match. What's left, correction and the narrow-audience opportunity, takes real product work, and it's not clearly profitable. Few people know about it yet

A Vietnamese tools company took a template for "an AI teacher helps you practice English speaking, subscriptions by week or year" that others had already validated, and ran it again. It plugged in its own ready Google ad buying and gave each country's store page a keyword title in the local language. Three months after launch, LearnUp has 920k installs and reached #21 on the Indonesia Education grossing chart. The product itself has little to learn from; the pipeline is what's worth looking at, along with the part it does poorly.

### A 96-person-upvoted one-star review

On Aug 2026 21, three weeks after LearnUp launched, a Google Play user left a bad review: "It just translates whatever you say. It doesn't point out or correct your mistakes. If you want to really improve your English, there's nothing useful here. Honestly, practice on your own. I regret installing it, and I subscribed." By Nov 6,96, the review had been marked helpful by enough people to rank first on the store page. The second-ranked review, from Aug 30, said: "One lesson is about 10 minutes, and the background music can't be turned off. The AI won't turn it off either. Uninstalled."

Yet the same store page has an overall rating of 4.6 stars from over 30k ratings. It ranks #21 on Indonesia's Top Grossing education chart, #41 in Turkey, and #21 on Thailand's Top Free education chart (Google Play charts, 11-06). Users are complaining, and the money keeps coming in. This shows how LearnUp's business works: it was never built to win on the product.

### What it is

An AI speaking practice app. Pick a scenario (travel, work, interviews, ordering food, making friends), talk with an AI tutor, and track streaks and challenge friends. The store listing says it teaches English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and about ten other languages, but English is the focus. No ads. In-app purchases run $9.99–$59.99, weekly and yearly subscriptions.

It's made by iKame Applications - Begamob Global, part of iKame Global in Hanoi, Vietnam. The company was founded in 2014 and has about 160 staff. Under the same developer account it has 41 apps with 324M installs in total: TV remote, screen casting, PDF, Word reader, cleaner, translator, racing game. LearnUp is its move into education subscriptions.

The factory fingerprints are easy to spot. The latest update notes say: "Update for a smoother, more accurate **design** experience." A language-learning app saying "design experience" was probably copied from another app the studio makes (inference). Google Play's "similar apps" recommendations below its listing include Learna in second place.

### Whose template is it

The name "Speak & Learn English", the AI tutor, and the subscription paywall were first proven by Learna from Turkey's Codeway. It launched in September 2024, now has 54.4M installs on Google Play, and third-party estimates put its iOS revenue at $1.5M to $9.3M a month. Before that came Praktika (3D avatar tutor, funded) and Speak (backed by OpenAI).

In the first half of 2026, more than twenty studios copied this template. LearnUp was not one of the fastest:

| Product | Launched | Google Play installs (11-06) | Compared with LearnUp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learna(Codeway) | 2024-09 | 54.4M, 7 days +510k | The template source, 50x bigger |
| Praktika | 2022-05 | 21.1M | 3D avatar tutor, mature brand |
| Speak | 2019 | 12.8M | Backed by OpenAI, deeper courses |
| Langla | 2026-04 | 9.53M, 7 days +815k | A same-period factory clone, 10x its scale |
| Lurnia | 2026-06 | 3.28M, 7 days +748k | Launched a month later, started faster |
| Fluzy, Linguza, LunaSpeak, BetterSpeak, YayTalk and others | 2026-01 to 07 | 900k–10M | Almost identical |
| **LearnUp** | **2026-07-29** | **925k, +58k over 7 days** | |
| ChatGPT voice, Gemini Live | — | Hundreds of millions of users | Free and general-purpose, no courses or streaks |

Among apps with "AI tutor / speak" in the title, more than 7 gained over 80k in the last 30 days, so LearnUp doesn't make the top 25. This category is one of the most crowded corners of Google Play education in 2026.

### Where users come from

**Google Ads, confirmed.** In the Google Ads Transparency Center, the advertiser BEGAMOB GLOBAL LIMITED has 1,033 creatives on record, with over 200 currently running. One matches LearnUp: a Turkish video titled "İş İngilizceni Geliştir" (Improve your business English), with the copy "Practice speaking with an AI language tutor and learn to speak fluently" and a "YÜKLE" (Install) button. It started running in Sep 30, was still running in Nov 3, and ran in 98 countries. The same advertiser also promotes a TV remote, a Word reader, screen casting and a PDF app. Google's app-ad creatives mostly don't appear in the Transparency Center, so actual spend is likely much larger than what's visible (inference).

**Store search.** Each country gets a title using the words locals search for: Indonesia "LearnUp: Belajar Bahasa AI", Turkey "LearnUp: Dil öğrenme AI", Thailand "LearnUp: เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ", Vietnam "Học Tiếng Anh Nhanh", Germany "KI Sprachen Lernen", Spanish "Aprender Idiomas", Saudi "تعلم الإنجليزية". Its Top Free education rank in Thailand and Turkey also brings in organic installs.

**High ratings.** 30k ratings against 920k installs, a rating rate of 3.3%. Peers in the same period mostly sit at 0.05%–0.8% (Langla 0.21%, Lurnia 0.15%); only the established Praktika and HubX's BetterSpeak reach that range. A ratio this high, combined with the most helpful reviews being negative, suggests the app is actively prompting for ratings (inference). High ratings lift store conversion and lower acquisition cost. Also, in Oct 29 its rating was 1 stars at 0, and by Nov 6 it had become 553. Whether that was a recalculation or a cleanup can't be seen from outside.

**Not found:** No TikTok videos about it turn up in search, and X, Reddit and the press haven't mentioned it. I found no Meta ads from its page; the studio's other apps advertise on Meta, but whether LearnUp does is unknown. Its sister translation app (over ten million installs combined) reaches exactly the people who want to learn English, so it's likely being used as a funnel (inference, no direct evidence found).

### Where the money comes from

Subscriptions only, no ads. AppGazers estimates its Google Play in-app revenue from Oct 7 to Nov 6 at $27k to $128k a month (a rough estimate with a wide range, read only as an order of magnitude). It ranks #21 on Indonesia's education Top Grossing and #41 in Turkey, so people in these low-paywall markets do pay.

Growth is flat. Installs rose from 867k to 925k over these 7 days, averaging over eight thousand a day. Averaged over the 92 days since launch, it's a bit over nine thousand a day with no spikes (Google Play installs, 10-29 to 11-06). This is the curve you get from spending against a payback model, not from a video going viral. The iOS version launched in Jul 23, and the US store has only 1,544 ratings, so the main battleground is clearly emerging Android markets (App Store, 11-06).

### Can you ride it?

Building another one like it makes little sense. LearnUp works because of a 160-person factory: a ready-made acquisition team and payback model, a user pool across dozens of apps, and a store-page pipeline covering over ten languages. A small team has none of that, and the category already has sources at Learna's scale and more than twenty same-template clones bigger than it.

But the two bad reviews point at real problems: **no correction** , and **lessons that are too short** . Most of this batch of factory apps follows the same playbook: a pretty home screen, the paywall up front, and an AI that was never properly tuned. A speaking coach that can tell you "this sentence is wrong here, and this phrasing sounds more natural" is the gap that's still open. Another gap is audience. Nearly all these apps teach "English for everyone in the world". Narrow niches, like teaching Japanese to Koreans, German to Turkish people living in Germany, or Japanese to care workers in Southeast Asia, are not being served by anyone.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** You can learn from it, but following it isn't worth it. Cloning the template means competing with the factory on paid acquisition, and you'll lose. What you can build is the part it does badly, and that part needs a product, not an assembly line.

**Good fit for:** a small team that already has a channel into a language-learning, study-abroad, immigration or overseas-labor audience, or someone with language-teaching expertise who can make "correction" good enough that users say "this one actually helps."

**Bad fit for:** anyone hoping to buy their way to a #30 "AI Speak & Learn English"; anyone without budget for Google app ads who expects organic installs to take off (that keyword is already crowded); anyone planning to go head-to-head with the factories in Indonesia or Turkey.

**How to build it:** pick a narrow audience and language pair, such as people who must pass a speaking test before going abroad for work, people taking the IELTS speaking exam, or new immigrants settling in a particular country. Do one thing only: for every sentence, show what's wrong, why, and the more natural phrasing, plus a record that makes progress visible. Price it like the proven tiers, $9.99 a week or $59.99 a year, since people are already buying at that level.

**How to get users:** don't start by competing for Google ads. First find where your audience already gathers: exam groups, agencies, labor companies, study-abroad bloggers. Make short videos showing before-and-after corrections from an "AI fixes your speaking mistakes" tool. Once each paying user's payback works out, add Google app ads, and build store titles by language the way LearnUp does.

**Timing:** before the first half of 2027. Voice models keep getting cheaper, and free voice practice from ChatGPT and Gemini is moving toward correction too, so the window won't stay open.

**What would prove this wrong:** ① someone in this batch of factory apps gets correction right and reviews start saying "it really fixes my mistakes", which takes that ground; ② LearnUp and its peers drop out of the top 100 grossing charts within a few months, which would show the template's subscriptions can't carry paid acquisition and the whole category is ebbing; ③ ChatGPT or Gemini's voice mode adds courses and correction for free, which would make paid speaking coaches hard to sell.

## Why LearnUp: Speak & Learn English (com.ikame.ai.language.learning) got traction

> Channel: Google Play (iOS version id6773548270) · Developer: iKame Applications - Begamob Global (part of iKame Global, Hanoi, Vietnam) · Launched 2026-07-29 · Research day 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It has nothing new. The Vietnamese tools-app factory iKame/Begamob took the proven "AI speaking coach + subscription" template (the Learna, Praktika and Speak line) and cloned it, plugging it into its existing acquisition machine: Google app ads targeting emerging markets, store titles keyworded by language, and in-app prompts for ratings. Subscriptions at $9.99–$59.99 then get it ranked on education Top Grossing charts in low-paywall markets like Indonesia and Turkey. Growth is moderate, steady at 8k–10k installs a day, and it doesn't rank near the top of the AI language-coach group. It got this far through distribution and factory resources, not product differentiation.

### 1. Data (our googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)

- Cumulative global installs: 866,763(10-29) → 924,637(11-06), +57,874 over 7 days (about 8.3k/day). Roughly 92k total since launch, averaging about 9.4k/day over 870 days. The curve is steady, with no spike (app_day).

- Ratings: 28,756 → 30,526, adding 160~260 a day. **Ratings / installs = 3.3%** . New apps in the same category usually sit at 0.05%–0.8%: Langla 0.21%, Linguza 0.05%, Lurnia 0.15%, YayTalk 0.78%. Only HubX's BetterSpeak (3.18%) and the veteran Praktika (6.35%) are in the same range. A ratio this high suggests an aggressive in-app rating prompt (inferred, not verified).

- Star distribution: at 10-29, the 1-star share is 0, and by 11-06 it has become 553 (app_snap.histogram), average 4.6. Yet the most-helpful reviews on the store page are negative: "Only translates what you say, doesn't correct you, regret subscribing" (96 people found it useful) and "A lesson is about 10 minutes, background music can't be turned off." The positive reviews are mostly short phrases.

- Chart ranks (chart_rank, best position): Indonesia Education Top Grossing 21 (over 9 days it climbed slowly from 24 to 21), Turkey Education Top Grossing 40, Thailand Education Top Free 18, Turkey Education Top Free 35, Indonesia Education Top Free 46, Sweden Top Free 54, Malaysia 58. The other dozen-plus storefronts all sit in the Education Top Grossing 128–138 band, which looks like the same aggregate chart at a low-threshold position across regions. US Education Top Free 134, Top Grossing 162.

- Store page titles were keyworded per language: Indonesia "LearnUp: Belajar Bahasa AI", Turkey "LearnUp: Dil öğrenme AI", Thailand "LearnUp: เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ", Vietnam "Học Tiếng Anh Nhanh", Germany "KI Sprachen Lernen", Spanish "Aprender Idiomas", France "Apprendre une Langue", Saudi "تعلم الإنجليزية" (chart_rank.title). This is standard per-language ASO.

- Monetization: no ads (ad_supported=False), in-app purchases of $9.99–$59.99 (weekly, annual subscriptions and the like). The AppGazers model estimates Google Play in-app revenue of 10-07 to 11-06 at **$26.8K–$128.4K/month** , with 170k–810k downloads (80% range; source: appgazers.com/reports/apps/android-com.ikame.ai.language.learning).

- The iOS version 2026-07-23 is listed, seller BEGAMOB GLOBAL LIMITED, with 1,544 ratings in the US store (average 4.5), Indonesia 142, Thailand 133, Vietnam 116, Turkey 64 (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06). The iOS footprint is clearly smaller than Android, so the main battlefield is Android emerging markets.

### 2. Competitors (doing the same thing: AI conversation speaking practice)

This is one of the most crowded Google Play education niches of 2026. Right now, more than 30 apps with AI tutor / speak in the title have gained over 80k in the last 7 days, and LearnUp's 7-day gain (58k) doesn't even make the top 25:

| Product | Channel | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How it differs from LearnUp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duolingo (incl. Max / Video Call) | Android/iOS | 2013 | 990M installs, +3.79M in 7 days | Course system + gamification, AI chat is only a paid feature |
| Learna(Codeway) | Android/iOS | 2024-09 | 54.4M, +510k over 7 days; AppGazers estimates iOS $1.5M–9.3M/month | The template's source: the "Speak & Learn English" naming, the AI tutor and the subscription-wall playbook were pioneered here, at 50x the scale |
| Praktika | Android/iOS | 2022-05 | 21.1M, 7 days +200k | 3D avatar tutor, funded, revenue estimated at $270k–1.4M/month |
| Speak(Speakeasy Labs) | Android/iOS | 2019 | 12.8M | Backed by OpenAI, brand and curriculum depth |
| Loora / Talkpal / Stimuler / Supernova | Android/iOS | 2022–2025 | 6M–26M | Early players, each with a different focus (India market, accent correction) |
| Langla(Aquaworld) | Android | 2026-04 | 9.53M, 7 days +815k | A same-period factory app, 10x LearnUp's volume |
| Lurnia(Astronex) | Android | 2026-06 | 3.28M, 7 days +748k | A same-period factory clone that started faster |
| Fluzy / Linguza / LunaSpeak / BetterSpeak (HubX) / Fluza / YayTalk / DailySpeak / EngLearn Speak / Elyra, etc. | Android | 2026-01 to 07 | 900k–10M | Nearly identical: AI tutor, real-life scenario conversations, streak check-ins |
| ChatGPT voice mode / Gemini Live | Big-company features | 2024– | Hundreds of millions of users | Free and general-purpose, no courses or streaks |

### 3. Where users come from

- **Google Ads (confirmed)** : In the Google Ads Transparency Center, advertiser BEGAMOB GLOBAL LIMITED (AR14881673759193825281) has 1,033 creatives in total, with 200+ currently running (hitting our crawl cap). The one that maps to LearnUp is a Turkish video ("İş İngilizceni Geliştir / practice business English with an AI teacher"), running from 2026-09-30 to 11-03 in 98 countries (googleads.creative). The same advertiser also runs TV Remote (23 creatives), Word Document (16), Cast (14), PDF, translation and more. We only see a sample of creatives, and most Google App ads (UAC) don't appear in the transparency center, so actual spend is likely larger than what we see (inferred).

- **Meta ads (confirmed the factory buys there, LearnUp not confirmed)** : Begamob's Check Legit page runs 85 ads, landing on marketing.begamob.com with adjust attribution. No LearnUp page in Meta's library turned up, so it remains unconfirmed.

- **TikTok Europe ads** : none in the library. TikHub searches for "LearnUp app / LearnUp english" returned no content videos either.

- **Store search / ASO (confirmed)** : per-language keyword titles as above. Education Top Free in Thailand 18 and Turkey 35 also bring organic installs.

- **X / Reddit / media** : 0 posts in x-radar over the last 90 days. Never mentioned in Reddit or media reviews. Searches for "LearnUp" mostly return unrelated namesakes (Taiwan's UpPath Labs getlearnup.ai, a San Francisco literacy nonprofit).

- **Factory resources (confirmed)** : the same developer account has 41 apps in the library with 324M total installs (Car Race 379M, Cast, PDF, AI Translate…). iKame Global was founded in 2014, is based in Hanoi, has about 160 staff, and bills itself as "a top Vietnamese publisher by global downloads" (ikameglobal.com, LinkedIn, digitalinasia.com). It also offers app publishing and ROAS/LTV optimization services (iKame Applications Publishing's Facebook page). Its translation apps (AI Translate All Languages 5.28M, Language Translator 7.79M) overlap heavily with people who want to learn English, so cross-promotion is likely (inferred, not verified).

### 4. Why it took off

1. **The niche is proven, so copying the template carries the least risk** : Learna is estimated at over a million dollars a month on iOS, Praktika and Speak have raised funding, and in the first half of 2026 more than 20 factory apps appeared. LearnUp's naming (Speak & Learn English) and feature list (AI tutor, scenario conversations, check-ins, friend challenges) are nearly identical to theirs.

2. **The factory's paid acquisition machine** : Begamob keeps 200+ creatives running on Google year-round across 98 countries, with ROAS modeling and attribution (adjust) already in place. A new product plugged in can scale against a payback model, so the curve is steady at 8k–10k a day, not a viral spike.

3. **Chose emerging markets and low-threshold charts** : user acquisition is cheap in places like Indonesia, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia and the Middle East. The education top grossing chart has a low bar: Indonesia #21 and Turkey #40 are revenue signals. Store page titles are localized, targeting searches like "learn English".

4. **Subscription monetization, no ads** : $9.99–$59.99 subscriptions, where each purchase is worth enough to fund paid acquisition (AppGazers estimates $27k–$128k per month on Play).

5. **Ratings pushed very high** : a 3.3% rating rate and 4.6 average, far above peers, while the most-helpful reviews are negative. High ratings lift store conversion and lower acquisition cost (inferred).

### 5. Differentiation

Essentially none. The iOS in-app purchase copy mentions "video stream" (possibly video-style AI tutors) and "free talk," but Praktika and Learna already offered 3D or video tutors. Its real difference from competitors is **who builds it and how it gets distributed** : the low cost of a Vietnamese tool factory, multilingual ASO and a mature acquisition team, not the product itself. So differentiation isn't why it worked.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: few people know about it yet. Revenue isn't public, there's no media, X or Reddit discussion, only automated estimates on sites like AppGazers.

- Copycats: it is itself a copycat. Over 2026 the same niche already had 20+ near-identical factory apps (Langla, Lurnia, Fluzy, Linguza, LunaSpeak, Fluza, YayTalk, etc.), many bigger than it. No dedicated copycat of it has shown up yet.

### 7. What others can learn

- A proven subscription category plus a factory pipeline: templated products, keyword titles localized per language, Google App ads targeting low-cost markets, and payback in regions where the education chart has a low bar.

- Cross-promoting through its own similar user base (translation apps) makes cold starts cheaper (inferred).

- In-app rating prompts can noticeably raise store ratings (grey area, with a risk of Google penalties).

### 8. Still unclear

- Actual ad scale and spend (the transparency center only shows 1 LearnUp creatives; UAC is mostly not public).

- Whether its own translation, PDF and other apps send it traffic.

- User retention and renewal rates (negative reviews center on "just translation, no correction" and "lessons too short"; refunds and churn may be high).

- The AppGazers revenue range is very wide, so it only gives an order of magnitude.

- 1 stars went from 0 to 553: either the rating was recalculated or Google cleaned out fake reviews. Not sure which.
