"What to Cook Today" hits #24 on Saudi Food & Drink chart: behind Tahwa's 6,288 installs is a chart with remarkably low entry requirements
What it is An Arabic recipe app: tell it what's in your fridge and it picks, from 800 recipes, the ones you can make right now. Offline, no sign-up, paid weekly meal plans and Ramadan menus.
Why it took off Saudi's Food & Drink chart is almost all delivery apps, and a few hundred installs a day gets you into the top 30. Its title uses the phrase locals actually search, "وش أطبخ اليوم" (what to cook today). Add two bursts of acquisition from unclear sources and it climbed to #24.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another ingredient-based recipe app. Copy the playbook instead: write store titles in local colloquial Arabic, run a short paid push to get onto a small-language category chart, pair it with a programmatic SEO site, and tie the subscription pitch to a time that returns every year, like Ramadan.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-28 · 11-06 installs 6,288
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-06 (9 days, 9 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Tahwa (طهوة) is an Arabic recipe app: tell it what's in your fridge and it picks, from 800 recipes, the ones you can make right now. In Oct 29 it reached #24 on Saudi Google Play's Food & Drink Top Free chart, the highest-ranking recipe app that day, while Cookpad sat at #173. Yet by Nov 6 it had only 6,288 installs worldwide, with just 13 added in the last three days. This piece covers how it reached "category #1" on very little volume, why that isn't the same as breaking out, and which parts of this playbook are worth copying.
The push notification from this morning 11:30
Open tahwa.app, and the homepage demo shows an ordinary day for a Saudi family. 11:30, a notification pops up on the phone: "وش غداكم اليوم؟" (What's for lunch today?). 11:31, you type or say "meat, potatoes, tomatoes, onions." It understands dialect, so when you say "بندورة" it knows that means "طماطم" (tomato). 11:32, it suggests "Potato and meat tray bake: you have everything." In between there's a shopping list, step-by-step cooking, and a 40-minute oven timer. By 13:25, the screen reads "صحتين وعافية!" (Enjoy your meal!), followed by: "What should we make tomorrow?" One tap builds a full week's menu, and this step is paid.
This demo is the whole product: Saudi colloquial Arabic, starting from "what do I have" and walking you through the daily lunch problem from start to finish.
What it is and how it charges
Built by a solo developer (the App Store seller name is Mohamad Husami, dev account IntelGet). Listed on Play in Sep 28, on iOS in Oct 7.
- Free tier: 800 recipes covering 11 cuisines including Gulf, Saudi, Levantine, Egyptian, Yemeni, Iraqi, and Maghrebi. Sorted by ingredients: dishes you can make right away first, then ones missing only spices, then ones missing one or two items, with home substitutes suggested for missing ingredients. Steps read aloud, a household dietary restrictions profile, everything works offline, no sign-up required.
- Tahwa Plus: full-week menus with matching shopping lists, a no-repeat iftar menu for all 30 days of Ramadan, daily calorie targets, and no ads. Monthly or annual subscriptions, with 7 days of free trial on the annual plan. The in-app purchase range listed on Play is $3.49 to $20.99. Watching one ad unlocks 24 hours of Plus, once a week.
- Dish photos are AI-generated, and the website's About page is self-written.
Revenue is not public. It hasn't charted in any country's top grossing, it has no ratings on Play, and the iOS Saudi store has only 5 ratings (all 5-star). From the outside, there's no way to tell whether anyone is actually buying subscriptions.
How the 6,288 installs were built up
| Date | Cumulative installs (Google Play, third-party estimate) |
|---|---|
| 10-20 | 655 |
| 10-21 | 1,602, up 947 in a single day |
| 10-27 | 3,125 |
| 11-01 | 4,686 |
| 11-03 | 6,275, store tier jumped from "1,000+" to "5,000+" |
| 11-06 | 6,288, only 13 more in three days |
The first three weeks saw a few dozen installs a day, then two sudden spikes: 10-21 brought 947 in one day, and 11-02 to 11-03 averaged about 800 a day. After that it nearly flatlined. This on-and-off shape looks like short-term paid acquisition, though it could also be one account reposting it. The source hasn't been verified. The public Meta ad library returns nothing for it, but that doesn't mean nothing was run. Its own content output is too small to explain thousands of installs: the YouTube channel @tahwaapp has 11-06 with 4 subscribers and 15 Shorts, and the latest ones have 45 to 142 views. Nothing turns up on TikTok or X.
Another possibility: Play refreshes install counts in batches, so the "flatline" after 11-04 may just be a refresh lag (inference, needs a few more days of data to confirm).
What rank #24 is actually worth
This is the most important takeaway from this case. The Saudi Play food free chart is almost entirely taken over by delivery and restaurant apps, and recipe apps usually sit below #100. On 10-29, #21 Nora Burger had only 9,237 cumulative installs, and #29 "قوت كوكي" had only 779. In other words, a few hundred installs a day was enough to crack the top 30 on that chart.
Tahwa did exactly this: the title is the phrase Saudis actually type when searching for recipes, "طهوة: وش أطبخ اليوم؟ وصفات طبخ" (What to cook today? Recipes), the English description is stuffed with long-tail keywords (what to cook today, chicken rice ground beef, quick dinner, suhoor), and two concentrated bursts of acquisition turned it into the highest-ranked recipe app on the chart that day. Rankings of other recipe apps: "المطبخ الكتاب" #100, "وصفات الكيك" #114, WannaCook #115, Riafy's "وصفات الطبخ" #134, Cookpad #173.
But once acquisition stopped, the rank dropped: 33, 32, 37, 36, 40, 54, 105,11-06 fell to 175. On the UAE chart, 10-29 went from #86 to #10-30 and then dropped out of the top 93 200. Chart positions were bought or pushed, not earned or retained.
The effort it put into its website
The website tahwa.app is more worth studying than the app itself. It is a programmatically generated SEO site: about 212 recipe pages, 20 "ingredient combination" pages (for example "دجاج و أرز," chicken and rice), 11 cuisine pages, and topic pages like "Saudi food" and "Ramadan 30-day menu." There is also a page "افضل تطبيق وصفات طبخ" (best recipe app), where the author compares their app with Cookpad, Suha, and WannaCook, aiming at question-style queries like "best Arabic recipe app," whether on Google or AI search. Searching "طهوة تطبيق وصفات" in Arabic, the site ranks first. The site has only been up a few weeks, so how much traffic it brings is not visible.
The download links on the website and YouTube carry per-channel tracking parameters (utm_source=site, utm_source=youtube), which shows the developer is tracking results by channel.
Notifications and paywall prompts are timed to Saudi daily routines: a reminder before lunch asking "What should we make today?", a shopping reminder on Thursday (Saudi weekends are Friday and Saturday), and reminders during Ramadan about what time to start cooking to make iftar. The 30-day Ramadan menu is Plus's main selling point, but Ramadan in 2027 starts around early February, so this selling point hasn't had a chance to be tested yet.
Who it's competing with
"Find recipes by ingredient" is not new at all:
| Product | Scale | How it differs from Tahwa |
|---|---|---|
| Cookpad(كوكباد) | The two Play packages together have about 64M installs | A community where users upload recipes, requires sign-up |
| Old recipe collections from Riafy, One Music Player, etc. | Each 4M to 8.5M | A 2013 to 2016 year ad-supported collection, with no ingredient matching or weekly planning |
| WannaCook(أطبخ ايه) | 1.14M | Egypt-focused social recipes, also searchable by ingredient |
| SuperCook | 3.94M | An established English ingredient-based recipe app, weak coverage of Arabic and local dishes |
| طبختي, Sous Chef (شيفك الذكي), Lumi AI | 0 to 1 ratings | New apps with the same positioning that appeared on iOS between 2026 9 and November |
| ChatGPT, Gemini | — | Free. Ask "what can I make with chicken and rice" and it answers, but there's no fixed recipe library, timers, or offline mode |
Tahwa hasn't been copied by anyone. It is itself one of the crowd that piled in around this time, just the first to surface on the Play Saudi chart. The same seller also released Talhaq (medication reminders plus prayer times) and Misbar Quran (Quran memorization) on iOS in October: one person building several low-cost Arabic lifestyle tools and seeing which one takes off.
If it were you
Verdict: C. The playbook is worth learning, but the product isn't worth copying. Tahwa hasn't yet shown that anyone is staying or paying: 6,288 installs, 0 ratings on Play, never charted in top grossing, and once acquisition stopped its rank fell from 24 to 175. The category is also old: Cookpad and a batch of older collections dominate search, three or four new iOS apps appeared at the same time, and ChatGPT answers "what should I cook today" for free.
Who it suits: Solo developers who know a particular non-English market well, can write natural colloquial copy, and already have or plan to build a batch of localized utility apps. Three things to take away: the bar for the top of a small-language category chart is low, and colloquial titles plus a short concentrated acquisition burst can get you "#1 in category"; programmatic SEO sites (ingredient-combination pages, self-written "best app" comparison pages); and tying subscription selling points to recurring local moments (Ramadan, weekend shopping days).
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone hoping to build sustained revenue from a single recipe app; anyone who doesn't understand Arabic or Gulf daily life; anyone expecting chart rankings to bring organic traffic on their own. This case shows it brings little.
How to do it: If you still want to build in this category, don't make "yet another find-recipes-by-ingredient app." Pick a scenario with a fixed time slot and people willing to pay, such as iftar menus during Ramadan, meal plans for weight loss, or packed lunches for kids, and build a narrow version first. Use the colloquial phrase locals actually search for directly in the store title. Ship on Android and iOS at the same time, and pair it with a programmatic SEO site.
How to acquire users: For cold start, concentrate Google App ads or Meta spend for a few days to push into the top 30 of the local category chart; at the same time roll out the SEO site's ingredient-combination and question pages to capture long-tail search. Ramadan products should start spending a month before Ramadan, since search volume begins rising then.
When to do it by: To pursue the Ramadan angle, launch before early January 2027 (Ramadan starts around early February).
What would show this read was wrong: ① Tahwa charts in the top grossing of any Saudi or Gulf country during Ramadan 2027, which would mean "Ramadan menu subscriptions" is a real money-making hook and this category should be upgraded to B or higher; ② it stops acquiring but installs keep growing steadily, which would mean the SEO site or word of mouth is working; ③ conversely, if after Ramadan it still has no ratings and no top grossing positions, along with the iOS newcomers, then the Arabic recipe subscription route is largely a dead end.

An Arabic (Gulf dialect tone) offline app that builds recipes from the ingredients already in your fridge: 800 AI-illustrated recipes, no sign-up, works offline. The subscription, Tahwa Plus, sells weekly meal plans, a 30-day Ramadan meal plan, and calorie goals. Its "breakout" came from the low bar on the Saudi Play food free chart, where it once reached #24. It has only 6,288 cumulative installs worldwide, and after 11-04 growth essentially stopped. This is an early-stage solo-developer project that did not break out.
1. Data: how much did it actually grow?
Play install curve (googleplay library app_day + app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates):
| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10-14 | 339 | AppstoreSpy started tracking |
| 10-20 | 655 | dozens per day for the first three weeks |
| 10-21 | 1,602 | +947 in a single day, a sudden spike |
| 10-25 | 2,181 | About 145 a day |
| 10-27 | 3,125 | 400–530 per day |
| 11-01 | 4,686 | 10-28~11-01 averaging about 312/day |
| 11-03 | 6,275 | 11-02~03 averaging about 794/day |
| 11-06 | 6,288 | 11-04~06 added only 13 over three days |
- The install bracket went from "11-03" 1,000+ to 5,000+ (app_snap). The Play rating count is 0, and our library has not captured a single review.
- Charts (googleplay chart_rank): only ever charted on the Food free category chart. The Saudi run peaked at #10-29 24, then went 33 → 32 → 37 → 36 → 40 → 54 → 105,11-06 → dropped to 175. In the UAE it hit #10-29 86, then fell out of the top 10-30 93 200.
- The Saudi food chart has a very low bar: on 10-29, the #21 app, Nora Burger, had only 9,237 cumulative installs, and #29 "قوت كوكي" had just 779. So "#24" roughly corresponds to a few hundred installs a day. It was still the highest-ranked recipe app on that chart that day. Other recipe apps' ranks: المطبخ الكتاب #100, وصفات الكيك #114, WannaCook #115, Riafy "وصفات الطبخ" #134, Cookpad #173.
- iOS: iTunes lookup (Saudi store) shows 5 ratings at 5.0 stars, version 1.3.1 (updated 11-03). The appstore library only shows it charting on low-bar category charts in Oman (#75) and Kenya (#106), and rating growth was essentially 0. iOS volume is very small.
- Monetization: Play in-app purchases range from $3.49 to $20.99. The website says "monthly or annual subscription, with a 7-day free trial on annual." A 1.3.1 update note also added a first-time free trial for the monthly plan. It has never appeared on a grossing chart, and revenue is unverified.
2. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Tahwa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cookpad(كوكباد) | iOS/Android | 2010/2011 | Combined cumulative installs across the two Play packages are about 39.2M + 24.7M (googleplay library) | A UGC community recipe app that imports from Instagram/TikTok. Tahwa instead offers 800 curated fixed recipes, matches by ingredient, requires no sign-up, and works offline. |
| Riafy "وصفات الطبخ" | Android | 2013 | 8.46M | An older content-style recipe collection with no ingredient matching and no weekly planning |
| One Music Player "وصفات الكيك" and "جميع وصفات طبخ الكتاب" | Android | 2014 | 7.88M / 4.32M | Ad-monetized recipe collections that live off search traffic from older packages |
| TarrySoft "المطبخ الكتاب" | Android | 2016 | 1.24M | Same as above |
| WannaCook(أطبخ ايه) | iOS/Android | 2020 | 1.14M | A social recipe app aimed at Egypt. It requires sign-up but also offers ingredient search. |
| SuperCook | iOS/Android/web | 2019 | 3.94M | Established English ingredient-based recipe app, weak coverage of Arabic and local dishes |
| Suha | iOS | 2026 | Not verified | AI-generated and curated recipes; try first, then subscribe |
| طبختي(Alwaleed Alfayez) | iOS | 2026-09-14 | 1 ratings | Nearly the same positioning ("recipes from what's in your kitchen"), 3 weeks ahead of Tahwa, from a Saudi developer |
| Sous Chef / شيفك الذكي(Salam Modallal) | iOS | 2026-09-18 | 0 ratings | An Arabic AI recipe assistant |
| Lumi AI: Recipes & Groceries | iOS | 2026-11-03 | 0 ratings | AI recipes plus a shopping list |
| What to Cook: Recipe Maker(SkyRocket Media) | Android | 2026-09-18 | 14,240 | English, same "what to cook today" angle |
| Asking ChatGPT / Gemini directly, e.g. "I have chicken and rice, what can I make?" | Big-company features | — | — | Free, but no fixed recipe library, step timers, shopping list, or offline mode |
Takeaway: "find recipes by ingredient" is not new at all (SuperCook, Cookpad, and WannaCook all do it). In 2026–November 9, at least 3 more new apps with the same positioning appeared on Arabic iOS. Nobody copied Tahwa; it is simply one of the crowd, and it charted first on the Saudi Play chart.
3. Growth tactics: where users come from
- Play store search and ASO (confirmed): On Play, the Arabic title is "طهوة: وش أطبخ اليوم؟ وصفات طبخ", which directly uses the high-frequency Saudi colloquial search phrase "وش أطبخ اليوم" (what to cook today). The English description is packed with long-tail keywords: what to cook today, chicken rice ground beef, quick dinner, suhoor.
- Category chart exposure (confirmed): The Saudi food free chart has a low bar and is almost entirely taken by delivery apps, so recipe apps usually rank below #100. A few hundred daily installs can push an app into the top 30, and charting brings some organic exposure.
- A short burst of acquisition, source unconfirmed: 10-21 a single day +947,11-02~03, averaging about 794/day. Then 11-04~06 it nearly flatlined. This on-and-off shape looks like short-term paid acquisition (a Google App campaign or Meta), though it could also be an account pushing a one-time promotion. Evidence:
- The metaads library can't find it by package name, domain, or Page name; the googleads library doesn't track it. Not being found does not mean it wasn't advertised.
- Owned content is too small to explain those thousands of installs: YouTube @tahwaapp has only 1 subscribers, its 9 Shorts range from 45 to 1K views, adding up to about 2K. Instagram @tahwaapp has Reels (11-01 posts), engagement unverified. TikTok (TikHub search for "طهوة") and X (x-radar search for tahwa) returned nothing.
- The website download link and the YouTube channel link both carry UTM parameters (utm_source=site/youtube, utm_campaign=organic), which shows the developer is tracking by channel and probably testing paid channels too.
- SEO (in progress, results unknown): tahwa.app is a programmatically generated SEO site. Its sitemap includes about 212 recipe pages, 20 "وش أطبخ / ingredient combination" pages (for example "دجاج و أرز", chicken and rice), 11 cuisine pages, 38 tag pages, and topic pages such as "أكلات سعودية" and "منيو رمضان 30 يوم", plus a "افضل تطبيق وصفات طبخ" competitor comparison page that sets itself against Cookpad, Suha, and WannaCook. It is targeting searches like "best Arabic recipe app." On jina, the official site ranks first for "طهوة تطبيق وصفات", but the site is only a few weeks old, so the traffic it brings can't be measured.
- In-product retention hooks (confirmed, from the website): a "what to cook today" reminder before lunch; a shopping reminder on Thursdays (the Saudi weekend is Friday and Saturday); Ramadan reminders for when to start cooking before iftar; watching an ad unlocks 24 hour(s) of Plus (once a week).
4. Why it broke out
- Chart bar plus local colloquial ASO: The Saudi food chart is almost entirely delivery and restaurant apps. The recipe niche has only a few 2013–2016-year-old legacy collection apps. A new package whose title directly says "وش أطبخ اليوم" reached the top recipe spot on the chart with a few hundred daily installs (#10-29 24, Cookpad at #173).
- More complete features than the legacy collections: sorting by ingredients (what you can make, what's missing only spices, what's missing one or two items), substitution suggestions for missing items, understanding of dialect voice input (بندورة = طماطم), a step mode with timers, shopping lists grouped by supermarket section, household dietary profiles, offline mode, and no sign-up. None of this existed in the ad-driven collection apps of 2014.
- Solo developer, shipping apps in batches: the same seller released Tahwa, Talhaq (medication reminders plus prayer times), and Misbar Quran (Quran memorization) on iOS within 2026 of each other in October. All are Arabic lifestyle or religious tools, and the recipe illustrations are AI-generated (as the "About" page on the website admits). One person is spreading low-cost localized apps and seeing which one takes off.
- But it didn't really take off: only 6.3K cumulative, just 13 added over three days, chart rank fell from 24 to 175, no Play ratings, and no grossing chart appearances. It looks more like a brief chart push that never found a sustainable acquisition channel.
5. Differentiation, and is it the reason it's taking off?
- Differentiation: ① Arabic plus Gulf colloquialisms ("وش", "الحين", "بندورة = طماطم"); ② fixed recipes, offline, no sign-up; ③ sorting from "what do I have"; ④ reminders tuned to Ramadan and Saudi routines (Thursday shopping, the iftar countdown).
- During the growth window, the only thing that really mattered was ①: a colloquial title matching search terms, combined with a low chart bar. ② and ③ were already available in SuperCook and WannaCook; nobody had done them this thoroughly for the Arabic market. ④ can only be tested during Ramadan (in 2027, Ramadan begins around the early part of February), so it contributes no growth yet. The differentiation itself has not been validated by the market: no ratings, no reviews, no revenue signals.
6. How visible it is
Few people know about it yet: X (x-radar) shows zero mentions, TikTok returns zero results, there is no press coverage, and no one has posted revenue. The only third-party mentions are automatically indexed directory pages such as AppBrain and CNET Download.
7. What to borrow
- In small-language markets, the category chart (Saudi Play Food) has a low bar. A colloquial title plus a short acquisition burst can earn a "category #1" chart position, which can serve as a cold-start lever.
- The programmatic SEO playbook: ingredient-combination pages ("X و Y"), cuisine pages, and a self-written "best app" comparison page, aimed at question-style traffic from AI search and Google.
- Design push notifications and paywalls around the local routine (Thursday shopping, a 30-day Ramadan meal plan), and tie subscription value to moments that recur every year.
8. Still unclear
- The sources of the two acquisition bursts on 10-21 and 11-02~03 (paid ads, influencers, or something else) are unconfirmed, and no ad creatives were found.
- Subscription conversion and revenue are completely unknown.
- Follower counts and view data for the Instagram account were not obtained.
- Whether the growth cliff is due to paid acquisition stopping or to a measurement artifact from batch-refreshed Play install counts still needs a few more days of observation.
