> It does one thing: helping users not forget what they've memorized. Deep similar-verse matching and a question bank, plus careful Arabic pages, earned organic traffic from Play search and the Saudi Education chart. Thabat - Quran Hifz Review · Jannah Mobile Apps

# How to not forget what you've memorized: a Haifa programmer builds one thing, reviewing · 2.5 months · 16k installs

**What it is** An app that helps people who have memorized the Quran review daily so they don't forget: spaced-repetition review queues, quizzes, drills on look-alike verses, and it can listen to you recite and flag the mistakes.

**Why it took off** It does one thing, "keep what you've memorized," and does it deeply: similar-verse and question-bank features are well built, and the Arabic pages are written with care. It picked up organic traffic from Play search and Saudi education category charts. In late October it charted, added recitation follow-along, and started charging, all around the same time, and daily installs rose from about 140 to about 380.

**C** **How you could approach it** Don't build another Arabic or English one. Switch to languages with big memorization communities like Urdu, Indonesian, or Turkish, and add the teacher side Thabat doesn't have: let memorization class teachers assign reviews to students. Ship it before Ramadan.

C grade: real demand and people paying, but anyone can build the features. Dozens of similar apps crowded into this same niche in 2026 years. The ceiling is Tarteel at 16M installs, and Thabat itself has only 16k. Worth learning from its narrow positioning and restrained copy, but following it isn't a great bet. Few people know about it yet

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)

Thabat is a Quran memorization review app built by one person. It launched at the end of August, and by Nov 6 it had 16,590 installs on Google Play. It climbed from #62 to #41 on the Saudi education free chart, and 470 ratings are all five stars. It spent nothing on paid acquisition, and no one has written about it. What it got right is a small thing: it doesn't teach you new verses, it just keeps you from forgetting the ones you already memorized. But this niche has drawn dozens of indie devs over 2026 years, and Tarteel, with 16M installs, sits at the top. For anyone trying to follow, there's more to learn here than money to be made.

### One review, one question

Eight days after the iOS launch on 2026 Aug 26, a five-star review showed up in the US App Store from a user named Omarbiadsay:

> "I really like this app. It tells me which passage comes before the one I'm reviewing."

Two days later, on Aug 28, the Google Play app was getting roughly 1,300 installs a day (third-party estimate), and 8 in its first 2,675 days. Then it dropped to a hundred-plus a day, the pattern of a group of acquaintances passing it around and then stopping. The developer, Mahmoud Jabarin, is an Arab living in Israel who did a data science master's at the Technion in Haifa. Biadsy is a common surname in Arab towns in Israel, so the first users most likely came from his circle (inference).

A month later, a Saudi user's review explained what the product is for more clearly (App Store Saudi Arabia, 09-21):

> "First, it keeps those who have memorized from forgetting, keeping what they've learned steady. Second, it reminds us not to neglect the Quran, may God forgive us. One thing I don't understand: how does it pick which juz' and verses to review today?"

### What it is

People who have memorized all or part of the Quran (huffaz) have to review for life, and forgetting weighs on them. Thabat handles just this one job:

- Mark which passages you've memorized, by verse, surah, juz', or page, and set how many minutes you can spare each day.

- Spaced repetition builds the day's review list, bringing back the passages you're most likely to forget sooner.

- Five quiz types: continue the next line, start of the next verse, fill in the blank, "which verse comes before this one," and a dedicated similar-verse discrimination quiz. The site says the question bank has over 50k questions, with 4,120 pairs of similar verses: same opening, one word changed, different ending, the kind of thing even experienced memorizers trip on.

- Recitation check: pick a page, hide the text, recite to your phone, and it follows word by word, marking where you got stuck or made mistakes. Added in the Oct 24 1.0.10 update.

The copy is restrained, which counts as a plus for a religious product. Reminders learn your usual times ("After Fajr, your review is ready"). If you've already reviewed that day, it stops reminding you. If you come back after a few days away, it says "It's okay, let's start lighter today." Travel or illness can pause your streak. Recitation check only verifies words and doesn't judge tajweed.

The free version has usage limits. Thabat Plus removes the quiz limit, gives more recitation time, and adds more similar-verse tools and analytics, with a 3-day free trial. On the App Store it's $7.99 a month or $64.90 a year. The subscription terms took effect Oct 15.

### How much it grew

| Timeline | Play cumulative installs | About how many per day |
|---|---|---|
| 08-21 launch → 08-29 | 0 → 2,675 | The first-week cold start |
| 09-01 → 10-20 | 3,140 → 10,164 | About 140 |
| 10-21 → 11-06 | 10,164 → 16,590 | About 380 |

(Google Play; the iOS version launched first on Aug 18)

- **Chart** : From Oct 19 it entered Saudi Arabia's Education free chart at 11-06 #41. The same day it was #40 on Oman's Education free chart and #93 on Israel's.

- **Ratings** : 470 ratings on Play, all five stars, none lower. That's 2.8% of installs; in September the share was about 5%. That ratio is high, and having zero low ratings isn't quite natural. It could be that the flow prompted for ratings, or that religious app users just give five stars. Hard to tell which.

- **iOS is much smaller** : Saudi Arabia, the US, Egypt, and the UAE together have fewer than 100 ratings. It has charted on Bahrain's Education Top Grossing at #43 (10-31) and Egypt's at #125 (11-06). A handful of subscriptions can put you on a small Gulf country's education grossing chart, which shows people are paying, just not many.

In late October daily installs more than doubled. Three things happened in the same stretch: it entered Saudi's Education chart (10-19), added recitation check (10-24), and started charging (10-15). From the outside you can't tell which one was the main driver.

### Where users come from

Almost all organic Play traffic. The store title is just "Hifz Review," and the Arabic page and website use search-friendly phrases like "review memorization" and "consolidate," and its category ranking climbed steadily.

What I could confirm is absent: searching its English or Arabic name on TikTok turns up no videos, nobody has mentioned it on X in nearly 90 days, r/Hifdh on Reddit has no self-promo posts for it, and there's no press coverage. It also doesn't appear in public ad libraries, and the curve is flat with none of the sudden jumps that paid campaigns produce.

For comparison, Murajaa (its name is literally the Arabic word for "review") runs an official TikTok account posting feature demos, with 10-20k views per video. HifzPath posts repeatedly on r/Hifdh and has reached 63k installs. Thabat has published no content at all, and its installs are a quarter of HifzPath's.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale | Compared with Thabat |
|---|---|---|
| Tarteel | Play 16.3M installs, +127k in a week; #1 on Saudi's Books & Reference free chart | The leader: AI recitation correction, memorization plans, and subscriptions, with review as just one part |
| القرآن الكريم حفظ وتسميع(BAKRIN) | Play 2.48M | Arabic recitation and dictation, without spaced repetition or similar-verse quizzes |
| Tasmeea | Play 510k, launched 2025-10 | A recitation app that took off within a year, 30 times Thabat's size |
| HifzPath | Play 63k, 2026-04 | Indie developer, growing through Reddit |
| Sabr | Play 22k, 2026-04 | Indie developers from the same period |
| Murajaa | iOS 72 ratings, 2026-03 | Nearly the same idea, growing through TikTok |
| Retain Quran, Itqan Ayah, Hifz Mastery, Tathbeet, and others | Dozens to thousands | Each does a few things from spaced repetition, quizzes, and recitation |

(Google Play / App Store,11-06)

Over 2026 years, more than twenty iOS apps launched with hifz or "Quran memorization" in their names. Thabat isn't the origin of the trend, but a latecomer to the wave: Murajaa, HifzPath, and Sabr all came before it. Its edge is narrowness and detail: review only, the deepest similar-verse work, and the most polished Arabic pages. That's enough to win long-tail search and small-country category charts, but not enough to break out.

One more detail: its English website still has placeholder text saying "sample text, to be replaced once verified verses are in." For a one-person product, it's not finished polishing yet.

### If it were you

**Grade C.** The need is real and people will pay, but anyone can build the features, dozens of indie developers are crowding into the same niche, and the ceiling is Tarteel. If you copy Thabat and build an Arabic review app, you'll most likely be number 31.

**Who it suits** : people who are Muslim themselves, have memorized the Quran, or have a memorization class nearby, and whose first language is one of Urdu, Indonesian, Malay, Turkish, or Bengali. Many more people memorize in these places than in the Gulf, while nearly all the products in the table above are English- or Arabic-first (inference; I didn't check each language's store individually).

**Who it doesn't suit** : people without this faith background who just want to "make money with a religious app." Not a single word of the text can be wrong, similar-verse pairs need a knowledgeable reviewer, users are very sensitive to getting things right, and outsiders won't get it right. It's also not for anyone who wants to build something big: 16k installs and sporadic subscriptions is where this segment stands right now.

**How to build it** : review only, don't touch learning new memorization or full-feature scope, and copy Thabat on that. Differentiate in two places: language and local memorization habits (review by page, review the passages a teacher assigns); and the teacher side Thabat lacks, letting class teachers assign daily reviews and see which passages each student keeps getting wrong. The Saudi user's question, "how does it pick today's review," is one the teacher side can answer directly. A free tier plus a subscription with a 3-day trial, with limits based on quiz count and recitation time, is directly reusable.

**How to get users** : write the store title and description in the local language using scene words like "review memorization," and start by winning small-country education category charts. Do the content Thabat skipped: copy Murajaa's TikTok approach with posts like "These two verses differ by one word, can you tell them apart?", and copy HifzPath by posting in memorization communities. Then get a teacher or two at memorization classes and mosques to use it first and have them bring their students in.

**When to launch by** : Ramadan is when memorization and review peak. In 2027, Ramadan starts around early February, so you need to ship and collect your first batch of ratings before late January.

**Signs you've read this wrong** : ① before late January there are already three or more similar "review + similar verses" apps in your language's store; ② Tarteel launches a dedicated review mode in your language; ③ after Ramadan ends, Thabat's daily installs fall back to a hundred-plus from September, meaning the demand is smaller than it looks.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Play Arabic store search and category charts (organic traffic)** : nearly all volume on Play; Saudi Education free chart 62→41 steadily climbing, Oman #40, Israel #93 (AppWinners, on the chart since 10-19); title and website use review-scene keywords

- Inferred **Friends-and-community cold start** : about 2.7K installs in the first 8 days (08-28 about 1,300 per day, per AppstoreSpy estimates), then it dropped to about 100/day. It was charting in Israel's education category, and early reviewers have Israeli Arab surnames. I couldn't find the specific groups.

- Inferred **Rating prompts** : Play has 470 ratings, 100% five-star. The September rating rate was about 5% (apppage.net logged 7K+ downloads and 329 ratings). The mechanism is unverified.

- Inferred **Product updates (voice reading, Plus launch)** : the terms took effect on 10-15, and the 1.0.10 "read one page" feature with 10-24 shipped. Daily installs doubled from 10-21. The timing lines up, but causation is unproven.

- Inferred **Paid acquisition** : neither the Meta nor the Google ad library tracked it. The curve is smooth, with no step changes from spend.

- Inferred **TikTok / X / Reddit / press** : TikHub, x-radar, Reddit and web search each returned 0 results. Similar apps Murajaa and HifzPath are active on TikTok and Reddit.

## Why Thabat - Quran Hifz Review (com.jannahapps.thabat) got traction

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data comes from our googleplay and appstore databases (DuckDB, from 2026-10-29 / 10-28). Early launch curves are AppstoreSpy estimates (app_day_ext), web evidence comes from Jina / Exa, TikTok from TikHub, and X from x-radar.

### Bottom line

This is a Quran memorization **review** tool built by one Arab-Israeli developer, Mahmoud Jabarin (MSc in Data Science, Technion). It uses spaced repetition for daily review, 5 quiz types, 4,120 groups of similar-verse comparisons, and recitation checks that flag where you slipped. It's free, with a Thabat Plus subscription. It **hasn't really broken out, it's only gained some traction** . On Play it reached 16.6k cumulative installs over 2.5 months, and daily installs rose from about 140 in September to about 380 by late October. The rise overlaps with its entry into Saudi Arabia's free education chart (from 10-19), the launch of the "read one page" voice feature (version 10-24), and paid launch (terms effective 10-15). I found no evidence of ads, influencers or press. The volume appears to come from organic Play traffic in Arabic search and category charts, plus a friends-and-community cold start in the first week. Dozens of indie developers have shipped "hifz apps" in this niche over the past 2026 years, and Thabat's features aren't unique. What it does better than similar apps is **focus on review alone** , with deep question banks and similar-verse work, a carefully written Arabic store page, and a 100% five-star store rating.

### 1. Data

**Google Play (googleplay database, app_snap / app_day_ext)**

| Timeline | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-21 | 0 | Store launch (iOS 8-18) |
| 08-29 | 2,675 | About 8K in the first 2.7 days; AppstoreSpy estimates 08-28 at about 1,300 on the day |
| 09-01 → 10-20 | 3,140 → 10,164 | 49 days +7,024, about 143/day |
| 10-21 → 11-06 | 10,164 → 16,590 | +17 over 6,426 days, about 378/day; 10-21 to 10-25 at 400–770 per day |
| past 7 days | +3,425 | installs_gain_7d |

- Ratings: 470, histogram **[0,0,0,0,470]** , which is 100% five-star (every day since 10-29). Ratings are 2.8% of installs. A third-party page for September (apppage.net) logged "7K+ downloads, 329 ratings", an early rating rate of about 5%, which is abnormally high. Our database has no text reviews for it.

- Charts: it only charted in Saudi Arabia's free education category, climbing from #10-29 to #62,11-06 to #41 (chart_rank). AppWinners shows it charting from 10-19 onward. At 11-06 it was also #40 in Oman's free education chart, #41 in Saudi Arabia, and **#93 in Israel's free education chart** .

- In-app purchases $7.99–$64.99. The website says: "Free to start. Thabat Plus gives unlimited quizzes, more recitation time, advanced similar-verse tools and deep analytics, with a 3-day free trial." On the App Store it's $7.99/month or $64.90/year (checked at time of research).

**App Store (appstore database + iTunes lookup)**

- Launched 2026-08-18, developer Mahmoud Jabarin, version 1.0.8 (10-13). Ratings: Saudi Arabia 38 (4.74), US 22 (4.91), Egypt 18, UAE 3. Total under 100, an order of magnitude smaller than on Play.

- The charts it reached are low-barrier education categories: Bahrain Education Top Grossing #43 (10-31) → #166 (11-05), Kuwait Education Top Grossing #101 / #172, Egypt Education Top Grossing #125 (11-06), Yemen Education Top Free #93. This suggests occasional subscription revenue on iOS, but at a very small scale.

- Early US App Store reviewer ID is "Omarbiadsay" (Biadsy is a common surname in Israeli Arab towns), consistent with the developer's background. This hints that the first users came from personal networks (inferred).

### 2. Competitors

There are many products for memorizing the Quran and for review, and over 2026 years dozens of indie-developed hifz apps have appeared. In the appstore database, more than twenty hifz or Quran memorization apps launched in 2026 alone.

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Thabat differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tarteel: AI Quran Memorization | iOS + Android | 2016 / 2018 | Play 16.3M installs, +7k in the last 127 days; Saudi books and references free chart #1; iOS US 11k ratings | The leader. It has AI recitation correction, memorization plans and subscriptions. Review is only one part. Thabat only covers "how not to forget what you've already memorized." |
| القرآن الكريم حفظ وتسميع(BAKRIN) | Android | 2022-11 | Play 2.48M installs | A general Arabic memorization and dictation app with no spaced repetition or similar-verse tools |
| Tasmeea: Quran Memorization | Android | 2025-10 | Play 510k installs, Saudi books and references #33 | A memorization app that came up within a year, about 30 times Thabat's size. Its focus is recitation. |
| Quran by Quranly | iOS + Android | 2021 | Play 3.85M | A habit-tracking reading app, not a review tool |
| HifzPath | Android | 2026-04 | Play 63k installs | An indie developer who repeatedly posts on Reddit r/Hifdh to recruit users. Recitation correction plus review. |
| Sabr: Quran Memorization | iOS + Android | 2026-04/05 | 22k on Play, iOS rating 38 | Contemporaneous indie products |
| Murajaa(MOVIRA) | iOS + Android | 2026-03 | iOS 72 rating. Official TikTok account @murajaa.app keeps posting feature videos (1–17k views per video). | Named simply "Review", with Ayah Quiz and mistake tracking. Nearly the same idea, and it uses TikTok to drive traffic. |
| Retain Quran / Itqan Ayah / Tilawa / Hifz Mastery / Hifzan / Tathbeet and others | Multi-platform | 2023–2026 | Each has only dozens to thousands of users | Each covers some of spaced repetition, quizzes or recitation |
| ثبات القرآن(com.quran.thabat,Ahmed magdy esmail) | Android | Not verified | About 1.1K installs | Shares the name ("ثبات" means "steadfastness" and is common), an Arabic review app. No sign it copied Thabat. |

**Conclusion** : The need is real, but the niche is crowded, and giants like Tarteel exist. Thabat's features (spaced repetition, quizzes, recitation) are things others have too. What sets it apart is a **narrower focus** (review only, not teaching new memorization), **deep work on similar verses (mutashabihat) at 4,120 pairs** and a 50k-question bank, with Arabic first.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence found)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Play traffic from Arabic search and category charts | Most volume is on Play (16.6k vs under 100 ratings on iOS). Saudi education free chart rank went 62 → 41, climbing steadily. Oman and Israel education charts also list it. Store titles and the website use search terms like "مراجعة حفظ القرآن / تثبيت". | Partly confirmed (charts confirmed, search ranking unverified) |
| Friends-and-community cold start | About 2.7K installs in the first 8 days (08-28 about 1,300 in one day), then it dropped to about 100/day, like a one-time community share. It charted in Israel's education category, and early reviewers have Israeli Arab surnames. I couldn't find where it was shared. | Unconfirmed |
| Rating prompt | Play 470 ratings, 100% five-star, early rating rate about 5%. On iOS, 4 stars or below. | Inferred, mechanism unverified |
| Driven by product updates | 10-15 terms and privacy policy took effect (around the Plus launch). 10-24 shipped 1.0.10 "read one page" (word-by-word tracking, like reciting to a teacher). Daily installs doubled from 10-21. | Timing matches; causation not verified |
| Paid acquisition | Neither the Meta nor the Google ad library tracked it. (Ad libraries only track listed products, so absence isn't proof of no spend.) The curve is smooth, with no spend-driven steps. | No evidence |
| TikTok / X / Reddit / press | TikHub searches for "thabat app" and "تطبيق ثبات" returned no videos for it. x-radar shows 90 posts in 0 days. Reddit r/Hifdh surfaces self-promo posts for similar apps like HifzPath and Murajaa, but none for Thabat. No press coverage. | Confirmed none |

### 4. Why it has grown to this level

1. **Rigid demand, willing to pay** : people who have memorized the Quran (huffaz) need lifelong review, and forgetting weighs on them. A review tool is naturally opened every day. Education apps in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf have low paywall barriers, and a few iOS subscriptions were enough to chart in Bahrain, Kuwait and Egypt's education Top Grossing lists.

2. **Narrower positioning than most peers** : most hifz apps focus on "helping you memorize new material." Thabat focuses on "don't forget what you've memorized." Its store title is literally Hifz Review, with 4,120 groups of similar-verse comparisons and specialized quizzes like "which verse comes after this one." This targets the pain points of experienced memorizers (per the website and store description).

3. **A carefully written Arabic store page** : the website is mainly Arabic, with restrained, religiously appropriate copy ("reminders that don't rush you," "pause your streak while sick or traveling," "only checks memorized words, doesn't judge tajwid"). This converts well on Arabic-language search in the Play store.

4. **Strong store signals** : 100% five-star from 470 ratings stands out among its peers, which helped it climb the Saudi education chart.

5. **Late-October acceleration** : entry into the Saudi education chart (10-19), voice recitation launch (10-24) and Plus paid launch (terms 10-15) all happened at nearly the same time. Daily installs rose from about 140 to about 380.

### 5. Differentiation: is it the reason it took off?

The differentiation is **"review only" + depth in similar-verse comparison + Arabic first, with religiously appropriate store copy** . Parts of this exist in Murajaa, Tathbeet and Retain Quran too. Thabat's edge is doing review more thoroughly and presenting it more polished. That helps it win organic search and category charts, but the scale (16.6k) suggests this differentiation only drives long-tail traffic and hasn't broken out. The real ceiling is Tarteel (16M installs, +7k in 127 days).

### 6. How many people know about it

Still little known: no press, 0 posts on X, 0 posts on TikTok, no self-promo posts on Reddit, and revenue isn't public. Only auto-generated data pages like AppBrain, AppWinners and AppInsider (estimating "100+ downloads per day") mention it.

### 7. Copycats

I found no sign it's being copied. There are a few similarly named "ثبات" apps (com.quran.thabat, Thabat: Muslim Prayer & Quran, thabat-app.vercel.app), which share a common word rather than copying. Thabat itself is part of a 2026-year wave of hifz review apps. Murajaa (2026-03), HifzPath (2026-04) and Sabr (2026-04) all came before it.

### 8. What to borrow

- In a needs-driven religious and learning niche, don't compete with giants on full features. Pick the "review" stage and go deep, and put the scenario keyword (Hifz Review) right in the store title.

- Lead with the local-language (Arabic) store page and website, and go after the low-bar small-country category charts: Saudi Education Top Free hit the top 50 with just a few hundred installs a day; on iOS, a handful of subscriptions is enough to chart the Education Top Grossing in small Gulf countries.

- Free start + a 3-day trial for Plus, with quotas by quiz count / recitation minutes, paired with the daily review habit.

- Keep religious-product copy restrained (no urgency, pausable, scholars review the scripture, recordings not stored). That restraint is itself a conversion point.

### 9. Uncertain

- Where the first week's 2.7K installs came from (which WhatsApp / Telegram group, which institution, any mosque or memorization-class channel) hasn't been found.

- Whether 100% five-star ratings come from pre-filtering by rating, friends inflating scores, or religious-app users just liking to give five stars can't be determined; 0 low ratings on Play isn't natural.

- Whether the late-October acceleration came mainly from charting, the voice feature, or store featuring can't be separated; whether there was small-budget paid acquisition is unverified.

- Conversion rate and actual revenue are unknown; on iOS it only appears sporadically on the Education Top Grossing charts in Bahrain / Kuwait / Egypt.

- The release date of com.quran.thabat has not been verified.
