# "Born in Kolkata in 1955, which gemstone favours me?" A Hong Kong studio's AI astrology app: how did it get 20,000+ installs in India in one week?

**What it is** A free AI astrology app for India: it generates Vedic birth charts, chats with an AI astrologer, draws tarot cards, and uses AI to sketch your future partner. It earns from ads.

**Why it took off** It rode the concentrated Indian AI astrology boom of 9–October, borrowed the "soulmate sketch" hook already proven elsewhere, and its installs were very likely bought (inference). AdMob ads pay it back.

**D** 35 **How you could follow it** Don't go head-to-head with the leaders in India. Copy the studio playbook: graft the soulmate sketch onto another local fortune-telling market that isn't saturated yet, spin out multiple skins from one codebase, test by country with small budgets, and arbitrage paid acquisition with a free-plus-ads model.

Follow score 35: few people know about it, and the acquisition-arbitrage playbook is replicable. But the product itself has no differentiation. The Indian category is already crowded with players who have big-company traffic and budgets, like Astrotalk, Reva, and Astro99, and it sits near the tail among those peers. What you can follow is the playbook, which requires ad-buying skill and eCPM math. The window will also close as acquisition prices rise. Almost no one knows about it

Jyotiva is an AI Vedic astrology app from Hong Kong company NexLayer, launched 8 October. It draws birth charts, chats with an AI astrologer, draws tarot, and adds a "future partner sketch" generated by AI. It's free and heavy on ads. On Google Play it gained about 7k installs in 23 days and sits at #92–129 on India's Lifestyle free chart. It looks like a product on a growth run, but a closer look suggests a paid acquisition business: the curve climbs in steps, and the same company launched an almost identical app the day before, targeting Latin America. Below: how it got here, where it ranks in this category, and whether it's worth copying.

### A question left in the reviews

On 25 October, an Indian user named Sunil left a note in Jyotiva's Google Play reviews: "I was born on 1955 August 13 at 11:35 am in North Kolkata, West Bengal. Which gemstones are favourable for me?"

That's not a review, it's a consultation. He treated the review box as if it were an astrologer. 7 people marked it helpful. Another review the same day read: "Too many ads, but fun to pass the time." On 31 October another said: "Okay, just too many ads." (Google Play India store page, viewed 11-06)

These three reviews pretty much sketch the app's whole audience: mass users who aren't very app-savvy, possibly older, coming for charts and fortune questions. The product takes no payment, and the money comes from ads.

### What it is

The store page is blunt about six features:

- Enter birth date, time, and place to generate a Vedic birth chart (what Indians call a Kundli);

- Chat with an AI astrologer about relationships, love, and daily fortune, and follow up using your chart and any tarot draw;

- Draw three tarot cards and get readings;

- **AI soulmate sketch** : Based on your chart, it draws a sketch of your "future partner," and you can chat with that AI person afterward.

The one-line short description reads: "Chat with an AI astrologer about your Vedic chart, tarot, and future soulmate." The title and package name are stuffed with search terms like AI Astrology, Tarot, and vedic.astrology.

No in-app purchases. In India it has a 4.6 rating from 189 reviews, with a store tier of 10K+. The developer NexLayer Limited lists a Central, Hong Kong address and a +852 phone number. Its official homepage jumps straight to an app-ads.txt file that registers 89 AdMob publisher IDs. That's a list ad networks use to see which ad accounts you sell inventory through, and a typical small company doesn't need that many (inference: the domain is probably hosting it for a batch of apps or developer accounts at once).

### How it got to 20,000+

| Date | Total installs | This jump |
|---|---|---|
| 10-21 | About 1,000 | Third-party estimate |
| 10-26 | About 3,900 | +2,200 |
| 10-31 | 10,816 | +6,900 |
| 11-03 | 22,913 | +12,100 |
| 11-06 | 27,212 | About 2,100 per day after that |

(Google Play install counts, daily observations starting 10-29; earlier figures are third-party estimates)

Look at the shape: it doesn't grow a little each day. It flattens for several days, jumps sharply, then flattens again. Nothing outside explains these jumps. Searching its name on TikTok turns up only a namesake Indian celebrity, X has zero posts in the last 30 days, and no article covers it. It has charted only in India, and it has never made the overall or top-grossing charts.

The most likely explanation is **paid acquisition** , most likely Google app promotion ads, scaled up in budget steps (inference: we didn't find it in the ad libraries, and Play's install counter also refreshes in segments, so part of the step shape may come from that). Apps that monetize heavily with ads typically follow this route: buy installs, users see ads, and as long as AdMob revenue exceeds acquisition cost, the spend keeps going up.

There's a further clue. The same company launched StarGuide: Love & Astrology on 7 October, one day before Jyotiva. Its description opens by calling it "AstroLuna: Soulmate Sketch", so the name and description don't match, a sign the reskin wasn't finished. Its features are nearly identical, just with the soulmate sketch placed first. It has 35k installs and the same stepped growth (11-01 +8,800, 11-02 +7,500, 11-05 +4,800, with zero-growth days in between), and it charts in Mexico, Argentina, and the Philippines' Lifestyle free charts. One product, two skins, two sets of countries, tested at the same time.

### Why this timing and this combination

**India's AI astrology boom ran from 9 through October.** Reva (launched Sep 8, owned by ShareChat's parent Mohalla) gained 716k installs in a week and hit #2 on India's Lifestyle chart. Astro99 gained 1.04M in a week. Astro AI (Sep 2), NakshAI (Sep 9), and VedaSky (Sep 30) all entered within that same month (Google Play, 11-06). Gaining a million in a week suggests these users are cheap and willing to try AI astrology. Jyotiva launched 8 October and rode that wave in.

**It borrowed a hook proven elsewhere.** "AI draws your soulmate" had already been huge on TikTok in Europe and Latin America for over a year: one "Starla is scarily accurate" video got 3.3M views, another "who is this guy" got 4.47M, and as late as October people were still posting "the soulmate Nebula drew looks exactly like the guy I blocked" (TikTok, viewed 11-06). Apps built around portrait sketches like Amora saw 1.39M to 4.7M installs. Jyotiva put this hook on top of the chart readings Indians already want, giving the ad creatives a fresh angle.

**Free plus heavy ads works in India.** Indian users are not willing to pay much, so subscriptions are hard to sell. But with no login, no payment, and ads everywhere, each install only has to earn back its acquisition cost through ad revenue. The recurring "too many ads" reviews suggest it pushes ad volume hard.

### Where it ranks in this category

Near the back. India's AI astrology space is crowded (Google Play total installs / new installs over the last 7 days, 11-06):

| Product | Scale | Compared with Jyotiva |
|---|---|---|
| Astrotalk(2017) | 115M / +580k | Human astrologers charge by the minute. #7 on India's Lifestyle chart |
| AstroSage Kundli(2011) | 82.3M / +295k | Long-established chart software with the most complete content, which has also added AI |
| Astro99 / Tarot99 | 16.1M / +1.04M; 10.1M / +530k | AI plus humans, large-scale campaigns |
| Reva | 7.73M / +716k | Entered at the same time, backed by big-company traffic |
| AskPandit | 3.07M / +160k | Local brand, focused on AI chat |
| Astro AI (overseas studio) | 2.64M / +97k | Nearly the same feature set as Jyotiva, at about 100× the scale |
| NakshAI, VedaSky, MyNaksh, etc. | 110k–2M | A wave of AI Kundli apps |
| Astrology GPTs in ChatGPT, various web versions | Not verified | Free, no app install needed |

Each of Jyotiva's four features was done first by a bigger product; even the combo of "birth chart + AI chat + tarot + portrait" is basically the same at studio products like Astro AI, which are 50–100× larger. In this category, ad budget and creatives decide scale, not the product. Jyotiva itself is a copycat, and nobody is copying it yet.

### If it were you

**The short take** : don't copy Jyotiva. It's a tail player in Indian astrology. What's worth learning is the studio playbook behind it: graft a hook that's been validated in one market onto an essential need in another, reskin one product, run small per-country budgets in parallel, and arbitrage paid installs with "free + ads."

**Who it's for** : small teams that already know Google App Campaigns and AdMob monetization, and can work out cost per install and ad eCPM to the dollar; people who already have an AI chat and image-generation pipeline and can ship a reskinned app a week.

**Who it's not for** : anyone aiming to win on product quality or build subscriptions (this Indian user base doesn't pay, and the top players have real human astrologers and big-company traffic); anyone who hasn't run paid ads or doesn't have a few thousand dollars for testing; anyone who cares about avoiding an ad-heavy reputation or is put off by entertainment fortune-telling content.

**How to do it:**

- Don't go to India to fight Reva or Astro99. Pick a market with local demand for traditional fortune-telling where AI versions haven't flooded in yet: for example, BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu in Southeast Asia, primbon in Indonesia and Malaysia, tarot plus saint calendars in Latin America, coffee-ground reading in the Middle East. (We haven't systematically checked competition in these markets. Start by looking at the Play charts.)

- Graft the "AI draws your soulmate" hook onto it and make it the first screen. Keep the birth chart and AI chat good enough, not heavy.

- Ship two or three reskins off the same codebase, with different names, icons, and first-screen selling points. Run them against different countries. After a week or two, see which skin has the lowest install cost and highest ad revenue, then add budget to that one.

- Don't pack in ads the way it does and flood reviews with complaints. Once the review section is full of "too many ads," store conversion and paid acquisition costs both get worse.

**How to acquire users** : the main channel is Google App Campaigns. Start with small budgets by country, and use the "reveal" moment of the soulmate portrait as the creative. If you want India, remember TikTok is banned there, so short-video content has to go through YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. In Latin America and Southeast Asia, you can copy the TikTok creator format that Starla and Nebula use, where "the drawn person looks exactly like my ex."

**How much time is left** : the AI astrology wave really piled in around September. India is already crowded, and the other markets probably have about six months of window left. Once big players have all their portrait features and local fortune-telling in place and paid acquisition prices have been driven up, small-budget arbitrage stops working.

**What would mean you read it wrong** :

- Jyotiva and StarGuide stop climbing and fall off the charts before late November. That means the paid acquisition math never worked at that price, and the arbitrage doesn't hold;

- After two weeks of spending, your ad revenue per install is less than half of what you paid to acquire it, and switching to three reskins doesn't help. That means this market's eCPM can't support paid acquisition. Switch markets or stop;

- The top players (Astrotalk, Reva, Amora) put portraits and local fortune-telling into their free versions and start advertising in your target market. The hook is no longer fresh.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (likely Google App campaigns)** : installs jump in steps on 10-26, 10-31 and 11-03, the app charts only in India, and there is no organic exposure. AdMob monetization suits a paid-acquisition arbitrage play. A sister app shows the same curve. Not tracked in the ad libraries.

- Inferred **Store search ASO** : the title and package name are stuffed with keywords like AI Astrology, Tarot and vedic.astrology; the short description covers Vedic chart, tarot and soulmate.

- **Confirmed** **One developer, a portfolio of apps** : the same developer's StarGuide launched one day apart, with the same feature structure, and ran paid campaigns in Mexico, Argentina and the Philippines. The official site's app-ads.txt lists 89 AdMob pub IDs.

- Inferred **TikTok / X / media** : TikHub, x-radar and Jina search found no relevant content.

## Jyotiva: AI Astrology & Tarot (com.jyotiva.ai.vedic.astrology) research report

Research date: 2026-11-06. Channel: Google Play. Developer: NexLayer Limited (Unit 1501, Prosperity Tower, Central, Hong Kong; phone +852; email appdev@nexlayer.biz).

### Bottom line

It's not really a breakout. This is an ad-monetized wrapper app from a Hong Kong app studio, **an ad-monetized wrapper app** that mashes up two trends already proven to work: India's "AI Vedic astrology" and the global "AI soulmate sketch" craze, and aims them at India. 27K installs, #92–129 on India's Lifestyle Top Free chart. Next to its peers that's tail-end territory (Reva gained 716k in a week, Astro99 gained 1.04M). The "7 days +23k" the Recall scoring shows is a stepped climb off a very low base. The most likely source is paid acquisition (probably a Google App campaign), with the money recouped through AdMob ads. The same developer also runs a nearly identical sister app (StarGuide) using the same playbook.

### 1. Data

Source: googleplay library (app_day, app_day_ext, chart_rank, app_snap), data pulled 2026-11-06.

| Date | Total installs | Daily increase | Notes |

| 10-25 | 1,698 | — | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 10-26 | 3,921 | +2,223 | AppstoreSpy estimate, first jump |

| 11-05 | 25,016 | +2,103 | |
| 11-06 | 27,212 | +2,196 | |

- Store launch date 2026-10-08, version number has stayed at 1.0.2 (the store page's update date is 10-16).

- Charts: almost only on the **India** Lifestyle free chart, ranking between 92 and 129. 11-03 and 11-04 appeared twice on the South Africa Lifestyle free chart (188, 170). Never reached the overall or top-grossing charts.

- Rating: our library pulled from the US store, where the rating came back empty. The India store page shows **4.6 stars, 189 reviews** , in the "10K+" tier (Jina read play.google.com, gl=in, 2026-11-06). Review count is about 0.7% of installs, a normal ratio with no obvious fake-review signal.

- Monetization: no in-app purchases (offers_iap=False in app_snap; ad_supported=False in the US snapshot). But Indian reviews repeatedly mention ads: "Too many ads but good for entertainment" (10-25), "good but too many adds" (10-31). The developer site nexlayer.biz redirects directly to app-ads.txt, which lists **89 AdMob publisher IDs** . So it's confirmed to monetize through AdMob ads.

- Sister app: com.starguide.soulmate.astrology, "StarGuide: Love & Astrology," listed on 10-07, store page labeled "Contains ads." Its description calls it "AstroLuna: Soulmate Sketch," a mismatch between name and description and a typical sign of a reskin. Its installs added 23,837 over 34,880,7 days, also in steps (11-01 +8,764, 11-02 +7,455, 11-05 +4,814, with 0 growth in between). It charts on the Lifestyle free charts for Mexico, Argentina, the Philippines and India (84–186). The two apps launched one day apart with nearly identical features: Jyotiva focuses on Indian Vedic charts, StarGuide on soulmate sketches, each targeting a different region.

### 2. Competitors

The **India AI astrology** space is very crowded, with many new entrants since September 2026 (googleplay library, 2026-11-06):

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (total worldwide installs / 7-day new installs) | How it differs from Jyotiva |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astrotalk | Android / iOS / web | 2017 | 115M / 580k | Human astrologers charge by the minute; India Lifestyle #7 |
| AstroSage Kundli: AI Astrology | Android / iOS / web | 2011 | 82.3M / 295k | Established chart tool plus AI, the most complete content |
| Astro99 / Tarot99(Primetrace) | Android | 2025 | 16.1M / 1.04M; 10.1M / 530k | AI astrologer plus humans at large ad spend; India Social #6, Lifestyle #4 |
| Reva - Personal AI Astrologer (Askk/Mohalla family) | Android | 2026-09-08 | 7.73M / 716k | Also a new entrant, but backed by a big company's resources (Mohalla, parent of ShareChat); India Lifestyle #2, already on Malaysia's Top Grossing chart at #166 |
| AskPandit: AI Astrology Chat | Android | — | 3.07M / 160k | Indian homegrown brand focused on AI chat |
| Astro AI: Tarot & Horoscope(Ahc Foundation) | Android | 2026-09-02 | 2.64M / 97k | Overseas studio generic-astrology clone of the same type as Jyotiva, roughly 100× its scale |
| MyNaksh / Melooha / NakshAI / VedaSky / Aura AI | Android | 2023–2026-09 | 110k–2M | A large group of AI Kundli apps; VedaSky (listed 09-30, 110k) is the closest in scale to Jyotiva |
| Amora - Astra Soulmate Draw / Amora: A Hint of Your Soulmate / Nova Match | Android/iOS | 2025–2026 | 4.7M / 3.99M / 1.39M | The top players in the "soulmate sketch" category, with lots of creator content on TikTok (Nebula, Starla, Amora, Karma, Himira, etc.) |
| ChatGPT GPTs (such as Jyai), astrojyoti.ai, grahajyoti.com and other web tools | Web tools / big-company features | 2024– | Not verified | Free web-based AI Kundli chat; many substitutes |

Bottom line: Jyotiva's features (Vedic chart + AI astrologer chat + three tarot readings + AI soulmate sketch and chat) **each have bigger competitors who got there first** . Its only distinct move is "bringing the soulmate sketch into Indian Vedic astrology." But studio products like Astro AI and NakshAI sell nearly the same feature mix.

### 3. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (likely Google App campaigns / AdMob cross-promotion) | Installs don't grow smoothly; they jump in three steps on 10-26, 10-31 and 11-03. It charts in only one country. There's no content or media exposure. Ad-monetized apps usually run a "buy installs → recover through AdMob" arbitrage. The sister app shows the same stepped curve in a different set of countries during the same period. | Not confirmed (inferred). The googleads and metaads libraries don't track this app or developer, and the transparency centers haven't been checked. |
| Store search (ASO) | The title is stuffed with "AI Astrology & Tarot", the package name includes vedic.astrology, and the short description reads "AI astrologer chat about Vedic chart, tarot messages and your future soulmate." Search volume for astrology/kundli in India is large. | Partly confirmed (keyword layout is visible; the share of search traffic is unknown) |
| TikTok / creators | A TikHub search for "Jyotiva" only returned unrelated videos such as Jyoti Amge (the world's shortest woman); no relevant results at all. | No (no evidence found) |
| X / Reddit / press | x-radar search for "Jyotiva" over the last 30 days: 0 posts. Jina web search finds no coverage at all, and no third-party APK site writes about it either. | No (no evidence found) |
| A multi-app portfolio from one developer | The same developer's StarGuide/AstroLuna launched one day apart, with the same feature set, targeting different countries. The official site's app-ads.txt lists 89 AdMob pub IDs, which suggests the domain is hosting app-ads.txt for many developer accounts or apps at once, most likely a studio mass-publishing apps. | Partly confirmed (the two apps are confirmed to be the same build; that the 89 IDs belong to one entity is inference) |

### 4. Why it got traction (what's driving it)

1. **Timing** : From 2026 through 9 October, Indian AI astrology saw a concentrated boom. Reva (09-08), Astro AI (09-02), NakshAI (09-09), and VedaSky (09-30) all launched in this window. Astro99 gained 1M in a week, which suggests these users are cheap to acquire and willing to try AI astrology. Jyotiva launched 10-08 and rode this wave.

2. **Theme mashup** : It combines the "AI soulmate sketch" hook already proven in Western markets (lots of TikTok content from Amora, Nebula, Starla) with Kundli/Vedic chart readings, which are a staple need in India. That gives the ad creatives a fresh angle.

3. **Low-friction monetization** : It's free, requires no login, charges nothing, and relies entirely on AdMob ads. That makes the math work even in a low-ARPU market like India. The reviews saying "too many ads" fit this: it packs in ad volume fairly aggressively.

4. **Retention** : No retention data. A 4.6 rating from 189 reviews, and the reviews read like "which stones favour me…" posted straight into the review box. That suggests mass-market users who aren't very app-savvy (it looks like ad-driven traffic).

### 5. Differentiation

The differentiation is thin: "Vedic chart + AI chat + tarot + soulmate sketch" in one package, and the only extra is the soulmate sketch hook. That is **not why it grew** . Growth came from the paid acquisition cadence (stepped jumps) plus a hot category. Similar studio products (Astro AI, NakshAI) use nearly the same combination and are 50–100× bigger, which suggests budget and creatives drive scale, not the product.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **Almost no one knows about it** . No media coverage, no X discussion, no TikTok content, and no public revenue.

- Copycats: It is itself a copycat. Dozens of similar apps already exist in both the Indian AI astrology and soulmate sketch spaces. I see no sign of anyone specifically cloning it.

### 7. Takeaways

- Cross-market theme mashup: Grafting a hook validated in one region (soulmate sketch) onto a need-driven framework from another (India's Kundli), then using that as the paid acquisition creative.

- One developer account runs two isomorphic apps targeting different language markets (India vs. LatAm/Philippines), testing theme and geography in parallel with small budgets.

- Use the "free + heavy ads" model to arbitrage paid acquisition in low-ARPU markets. You need to work out the cost per install and AdMob eCPM carefully.

### 8. Uncertain

- The acquisition channels and budgets are unverified (not tracked in the ad libraries). "Paid acquisition" is inferred from the curve shape and monetization model. Play's install counter also lags and refreshes in segments, so part of the stepped shape may come from that.

- Unknown whether ad revenue covers acquisition cost, or what retention looks like.

- Unverified who runs NexLayer Limited, and whether the 89 pub IDs in app-ads.txt belong to the same entity.

- US store details couldn't be fetched, so ratings are empty in the database; the 189 reviews come from the India store page.
