> It isn't a hit product. It takes the exact name of the original and rides its search traffic, adds a suspected rating filter to hold 4.7 stars, and possibly small paid acquisition, to squeeze into personalized category charts in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Behind it is a catalog of five same-name clones, all shipped in one month.

# The unchanged name: How 3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K hit 55k installs in one month

**What it is** An Android 3D parallax / 4K live wallpaper app. Its title and features copy SmoothX Studio's namesake hit with tens of millions of installs, and it makes money from ads and in-app purchases.

**Why it took off** The product didn't take off. It uses the exact same name to siphon search traffic from the original, backed by suspected rating filtering that holds up 4.7 stars and possibly small paid buys. It broke into personalized category charts in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Behind it is a batch operation that launched five same-name clones in one month.

**D** **How you could follow it** Don't copy this package. If you really want to enter wallpapers, go narrow (a specific anime, a sports team, a city). Show people the content before you put up a rewarded ad, and use a TikTok account network to post before-and-after lock screen videos that drive people to store search.

Grade D: it's copied from someone else and relies on their name. It hit 55k installs in one month and is already declining. Same-name traffic siphoning risks takedown, and the wallpaper niche is packed with decade-old giants with tens of millions of installs. Followers wouldn't capture its volume and would struggle to differentiate the product. Few people know about it yet

Android · Ratings count (cumulative)

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)

Listed in Oct 6, 3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K has a name identical to SmoothX Studio's wallpaper app with 19.4M installs, and its description is lightly reworded from the original. In one month it reached 55k installs and a 4.7 rating, peaking at #50 on the Japan personalization category free chart. It has nothing new. What's worth looking at is how it got its volume, and why that volume is hard to turn into an opportunity for you.

### Watched four ads before the app opened

10 月 17 日,一个叫 Adam Armenio 的用户在 Google Play 上留了一条评论:「I had to watch 4 ads just to open this app & every time I touched anything more ads, immediate uninstall.」(光打开就看了 4 个广告,点哪儿都弹广告,马上卸了。)同一天,用户 Jarod 抱怨想给主屏和锁屏分别设一张壁纸,结果第二张总是覆盖掉第一张,括号里顺手补了一句「(4 ads later btw)」。另一个用户 Alex 写:「really awesome wallpapers but alot of ads」。

Looking at the original being copied, the reviews are nearly identical. On Sep 17, Stephanie O wrote that she was looking for space-themed wallpapers, "I was instantly taken over by ads and never even got to see any", and 20 people found it helpful. SmoothX's reply: the ads are what keep it free, and if you don't want them, upgrade to VIP.

Two apps with the same name, the same features and the same ad density, even the same complaints. The only difference: one is the real thing, the other a shadow that appeared a month ago.

### What it is

An Android 3D parallax / 4K live wallpaper app: pick an image and set it to the home screen, lock screen or both, and the picture has depth as the phone tilts. Categories include anime, nature, cyberpunk, city, cars, space and minimalism. Its feature list matches the original point by point. The original's description says "Experience the next level of screen customization", and this one says "Take screen customization to the next level". The original says "Optimized for all devices", this one says "Built to run well on many devices". The middle line "✨ Transform your screen with stunning 3D live wallpapers, 4K wallpapers, and dynamic moving backgrounds!" is word-for-word identical in both apps' Google Play store pages (11-06).

Money comes from two sources: ads, plus in-app purchases priced at $3.49–29.99 per item (store page, 11-06). The version is stuck at 1.0.x and hasn't been updated since Oct 14.

### Where the volume comes from

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10-13 | About 1,900 | First week on the store |
| 10-19 | About 5,500 | A few hundred a day |
| 10-20 | About 10.5k | Up 5k in a day |
| 10-24 | About 25k | Another jump, about 6k a day |
| 10-29 | 30,485 | Ratings 708 |
| 11-03 | 46,725 | Ratings 1,035 |
| 11-06 | 55,128 | rating 1,169,7 days +24,643 |

(October numbers are AppstoreSpy estimates; the 10-29 start is Google Play install counts)

**The first channel is the name.** People who search "3D live wallpaper" on Play, or who saw the original's reviews or YouTube tutorials and went looking for "3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K", would see two identical names side by side. The package name live3d.wallpaper.hd4k was also built from the keywords. The original's search demand, built over more than ten million installs, gives it a free slice.

**The second channel may be paid acquisition.** The two step-like jumps on 10-20 and 10-24 went from a few hundred a day to five or six thousand in a single day. The charts it reached were concentrated in high-CPM markets: Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and the UK. This looks like small, targeted buys over several rounds, though a jump in search ranking or a featured slot is also possible (inference: the package name doesn't appear in public ad libraries, and that doesn't prove no spend).

**The third channel is ratings.** Of the 1,169 ratings, 5-star makes up 87%. Between 10-29 and 11-06, 5-star ratings gained 405, while 2-star and 3-star gained only 1 each. Ratings are 2.1% of installs, versus 0.9% for the original. This concentration, with almost no middle grades, looks like the app first asks "Enjoying it?" and only sends the people who say yes to the store to rate it (inference, not verified by installing it). The closing line in the description, "Enjoying the app? Leave us a review", was also adapted from the original's "be sure to rate it 5 stars". The 4.7-star average holds up the click-through on search results.

On the charts, its best day was 11-03: #50 on the Japan personalization category free chart, #60 in Korea, #64 in Taiwan, while charted in 20 countries at once. By 11-06 it had dropped to #64 in Japan, #82 in Korea and #97 in Taiwan, and the charted countries shrank to 10. It never made the overall or top-grossing charts.

### Who's behind it: five "same-name" apps in one month

The developer is SONYA INTERNATIONAL IMAGE (HONG KONG) CO LIMITED, registered at a warehouse building in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong, an address often used by company secretary services. The support email is a personal Gmail with a Vietnamese-sounding name, and the website is a Vercel template site whose homepage reads only "A modern solution for managing your content". It's probably a Vietnamese tools studio operating through a Hong Kong company (inference, based on the email and website).

This developer released a batch of apps between Sep 22 and Oct 13, each with a title identical to an existing hit:

| App | Install (Google Play, 11-06) | Who they copied |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker Cleaner: Water Eject | 805k, +196k in 7 days | A same-name app from World Labs Global, 2.34M |
| Silly Smile Live Wallpaper | 222k | Riding the "Silly Smile" wallpaper wave on Play |
| **3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K** | 55k | SmoothX Studio, 19.4M |
| GPS Map Camera - Photo Stamp | 14k | Wisdomlogix, 220k |
| PDF Reader - PDF Editor | 13k | Simple Design, 92.5M |

Together the five have about 1.1M installs. AppBrain shows the developer has 10 apps in total, and only became active in 2026. The playbook is clear: take names other developers have already grown, launch a batch at once, keep whichever picks up search traffic, and leave the rest dormant. The wallpaper one is a mid-to-low performer; the one that really broke out was the speaker-water-clearing app.

### Who it's competing with

Wallpapers are one of the most crowded categories on Play. Just counting titles containing "wallpaper", over forty apps added more than 100k installs in a single week (Google Play, 11-06).

- The original SmoothX "3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K" (2025-07): 19.4M, +143k in a week.

- Wallpaper 3D Live (VideoRoom Editor, 2024-10): 13.1M, +150k in a week.

- 3D Live Wallpapers 4D video 4K (Wallcraft, 2022): 36.6M, with its own content team and subscriptions.

- Live Wallpapers HD 4K (techpro, 2019): 48.8M, #4 in Japan's personalization category, competing for the same countries.

- SSME - 8K Live WallPaper (2026-01): 3.88M, taking a different route: many TikTok accounts post wallpaper videos ending with "search SSME for code xxxx", and the top single video reached about 1.07M views.

- Above that are Zedge, Google's own wallpapers, and TikTok's live wallpaper feature, all in the hundreds of millions.

It has no buzz on TikTok, and searching the developer name on X turns up nothing. It doesn't compete with these apps on product at all. It only siphons traffic off the one search term, the "same name".

### What users care about

Read the reviews from both sides together and the users want one thing: to see the wallpapers first. "the wall papers looks really cool… but the ads get in the way" (Mark T, original app, May 15), "Had i been able to get a clue about the app i would have gladly watched ads and possibly paid for premium" (Stephanie O). They don't hate ads. They hate being blocked by ads before they've seen the content. Add one small ask: home screen and lock screen should be set separately, without overwriting each other.

This is the category's common flaw, and also the only visible gap: whoever lets people see the content clearly before asking for money will convert and retain better. But the gap isn't new. Big players and established wallpaper apps can see it too.

### If it were you

**D. Understand the playbook, but don't copy it.** This app is itself a copycat, living off someone else's name. It hit 55k and is already on the way down. Copying it means copying a copy. To go after what it does badly, the "fewer ads" angle, you'd be up against dozens of established wallpaper apps with tens of millions of installs.

**Who it suits:** teams that already run an Android tools / personalization portfolio and have AdMob monetization and paid-acquisition experience. For you, the rhythm is the thing worth noting: pick search terms that have already been validated, batch-ship five to ten packages in a month, use the rating prompt as a filter, get charted first in high-CPM markets like Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and spend more on whatever works.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone trying to build a product that retains long-term and can sell subscriptions; anyone unwilling to take on the risk of original-app complaints and Play removal for "impersonation" or "repetitive content"; anyone with a single package hoping organic store traffic will carry it.

**How to do it:** if you must enter wallpapers, don't use the same name. Build a narrow-niche wallpaper app (one anime genre, one sports team, one city). On the first screen let people browse and preview freely, and only put the rewarded video at the set-wallpaper step. Get the home / lock screen separation right. Name and screenshots should speak to that one niche only.

**How to acquire users:** learn from SSME, not from this app. On TikTok, run a batch of accounts posting before / after lock-screen videos, ending with the app name and wallpaper ID so people search for it in the store. On the store side, get the rating prompt, keywords and hero image right to catch the search demand.

**When to be early:** there's no clear window. Wallpaper demand is year-round. Themes follow anime premieres, seasons and holidays, so launch two to three weeks ahead.

**What would show you've misread it:** ① if this publisher's wallpaper packages are still steady at a few thousand installs a day two to three months later, with no removals, then the same-name capture is safer on Play than it looks, and the approach deserves serious evaluation; ② conversely, if it and its same-name peers disappear one after another, Play is tightening up and this route is basically closed; ③ if your narrow-niche package fails to reach the target country's personalization category top 200 within a month without paid acquisition, the niche was picked wrong, or wallpapers have already become a category that organic traffic no longer reaches.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **store search / same-name traffic capture** : the title is word-for-word identical to SmoothX's 19.4M-install app, and the description keeps the original sentence "Transform your screen with stunning 3D live wallpapers…" (Play store page)

- **Verified** **app portfolio** : the same developer published 5 apps between 9-22 and 10-13 (AppBrain says 10 in total), every title copied from an existing hit: Speaker Cleaner: Water Eject 805k, Silly Smile Live Wallpaper 220k, and so on, roughly 1.1M installs combined (googleplay library)

- Inferred **rating prompting** : rating rate 2.1%, versus the original's 0.9%; 10-29 to 11-06 5-star +405,2/3, 1-star each; the description asks for good reviews

- Inferred **paid acquisition (in high-CPM markets)** : two step-jumps, on 10-20 and 10-24, with daily installs going from 5,000 to 6,000; charted mainly in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Canada and the UK; the package name doesn't show up in the Meta or Google ad libraries

## Why 3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K (com.live3d.wallpaper.hd4k) got traction

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: SONYA INTERNATIONAL IMAGE (HONG KONG) CO LIMITED | Store launch 2026-10-06 | Research day 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

The product itself has nothing new. This is a **same-name clone** from an app-portfolio account: the title copies SmoothX Studio's 19.4M-install app "3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K" word for word, and the description is rewritten but keeps the original's full sentences. After launch it rode store search on that name (possibly with some paid acquisition, though no evidence found), and squeezed into the middle-to-lower part of the personalization category's free chart in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, where ad rates are high. The money mostly comes back from heavy ads (user reviews say "4 ads when you open it"). Scale is about 3,000 installs a day, which is small for the wallpaper space.

### 1. Data (all from our database)

| Date | Total installs | New today | Score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-13 | 1,902 | — | — | AppstoreSpy estimate (googleplay.app_day_ext) |
| 10-19 | 5,515 | ~760/day | — | Same as above |
| 10-20 | 10,523 | ~5,000 | — | Same as above (first jump) |
| 10-24 | 25,095 | ~6,000/day | — | Same as above (second jump) |
| 10-29 | 30,485 | — | 708 | googleplay.app_snap |
| 11-03 | 46,725 | — | 1,035 | Same as above |
| 11-06 | 55,128 | 3,479 | 1,169 | Same as above |

- 7 days of new installs 24,643 (googleplay.app_profile, 2026-11-06); after 10-26 it held steady at about 2,500–3,500 a day.

- Chart data (googleplay.chart_rank): only charted in the **personalized category free chart** , never on the overall or Top Grossing charts. Best rank was #50 in Japan on 11-03, with South Korea 60, Taiwan 64 and Australia 75 the same day. On 11-03 it was charted in 20 stores at once, then shrank to 10 stores by 11-06 (Japan 64, South Korea 82, Taiwan 97, UK / Australia 143). **Already past the peak and on the way down** .

- Rating 4.74, histogram [1★43, 2★8, 3★8, 4★69, 5★1020] (11-06). Between 10-29 and 11-06, 5-star ratings added 405, while 2- and 3-star each added only 1. **Ratings ÷ installs ≈ 2.1%** , versus 0.9% for the original SmoothX (174,144 / 19.3M). Almost no middle ratings and such heavy clustering at 5 stars looks like review gating: asking "do you like it?" inside the app and only sending people who say yes to the store to rate. The description even ends with "Enjoying the app? Leave us a review". This is inference, not verified.

- Monetization: the store page lists "Contains ads" and in-app purchases of $3.49–$29.99 (Play store page, 2026-11-06). Public reviews include "opened it and saw 4 ads, popups everywhere" (Adam Armenio, 2026-10-17) and "wallpapers are nice, just too many ads". Versions have been stuck at 1.0.0 / 1.0.1,10-14 with no updates since.

### 2. Competitors

Wallpapers, and 3D parallax wallpapers in particular, are among the most crowded niches on Play. Searching "wallpaper" by title in our database, there are over 7 apps that have ever added 100k in a single day (googleplay, 40 2026-11-06).

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale (database) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K(SmoothX Studio,com.wallpaper3d.parallax4k.live4d) | Android | 2025-07-29 | 19.4M installs, +143k in 7 days | **The copied original** : same name, nearly identical description. It's the real one. |
| 3D Live Wallpapers 4D video 4K(Wallcraft / Nebuchadnezzar) | Android | 2022-07 | 36.6M | Established, with its own content team and subscriptions |
| Wallpaper 3D Live(VideoRoom Editor) | Android | 2024-10 | 13.1M, 7 days +150k | The head of the same category |
| Live Wallpapers HD 4K(techpro) | Android | 2019 | 48.8M | #4 in Japan's personalization category; the direct rival in the same markets |
| SSME - 8K Live WallPaper(Zhong Ye) | Android | 2026-01 | 3.88M | Drives traffic through a TikTok creator network ("search code xxxx on SSME", top single post about 1.07M views, TikHub) |
| Zedge, Google's official Wallpapers, TikTok Live Wallpaper | Android / big-company features | Years | Hundreds of millions | Platform-level players |
| Plaxa (Braly), WallHub, VibeWall and other parallax wallpaper apps launched in 2026 | Android | 2026-08~10 | 30k–5.1M | Same-period new entrants, some with their own brand names |

Compared with rivals, it has **no product differentiation** : features (3D parallax, 4K, lock / home screen) match the original exactly, and I found no exclusive content either.

### 3. Where users come from

1. **Store search + same-name traffic capture (confirmed)** : the title and SmoothX's hit are word-for-word identical. The description is rewritten, but keeps the original sentences "✨ Transform your screen with stunning 3D live wallpapers, 4K wallpapers, and dynamic moving backgrounds!" and closes with "Thank you for choosing 3D Live Wallpapers - HD & 4K" (Play store page; the summary of SmoothX's page in Jina search results is exactly this sentence). Users searching for "3D live wallpaper", or who saw the original's reputation or a YouTube tutorial and looked for this name, can all install it. The package name live3d.wallpaper.hd4k was also built from the keywords.

2. **The whole portfolio runs the same playbook (confirmed)** : the database shows 5 apps from this developer, concentrated in launches between 9-22 and 10-13, **and every title matches an existing hit word for word** :
    - Speaker Cleaner: Water Eject (805,424 installs, +196k over 7 days; original by World Labs Global, 2.34M)
    - Silly Smile Live Wallpaper (221,761; riding the 2025–26 Play "Silly Smile" wallpaper wave)
    - GPS Map Camera - Photo Stamp (13,695; original by Wisdomlogix, 220k)
    - PDF Reader - PDF Editor (12,803; same name as Simple Design's 92.5M app)
    - Roughly 1.1M installs combined (googleplay.developer). AppBrain shows this developer has 10 apps on Play in total, and only became active in 2026.

3. **Paid acquisition (unverified)** : install curves show two step-jumps on 10-20 and 10-24 (5,000–6,000 in a single day, only a few hundred either side). Charting concentrated in high-CPM markets like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Canada and the UK. It looks like small-budget targeted buys, or a jump from a store featuring slot or search ranking. The package name and developer don't appear in our Meta ad library (app_link) or Google ad library (adv_map), but those two only track products on our list, **so not finding them doesn't mean there was no spend** .

4. **Content and creators (not found)** : searching "3D live wallpaper app" on TikTok over the past 30 days returns trending posts that are all SSME and other rivals; searching the developer name on X (x-radar) returns 0 results.

5. **Ratings (inferred)** : 5-star makes up 87% while 2/3-star barely moves, and the rating rate is over 2 times the original's. Likely rating prompting or filtering, with high scores in the store carrying search conversion and ranking.

### 4. Developer profile

- The legal entity is a Hong Kong company at the Hoover Industrial Building in Kwai Chung. Addresses like this are often used by company secretary / nominee services. The support email is a personal Gmail ("dangthanhthu49015", a Vietnamese name). The website is a Vercel template site, zen-amo-website.vercel.app (homepage says only "A modern solution for managing your content"), and the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites (Play store page).

- Conclusion: probably a Vietnamese tools-app studio (or contractor) running a portfolio through a Hong Kong company account. The basis is the email and website, not verified. Batch same-name launches with ad monetization is a mature playbook in Vietnam's Play tools scene.

### 5. How visible it is

- No public revenue figures, and no media or X coverage. The only results are auto-generated pages from AppBrain, APKPure and CNET Download.

- The approach itself (same-name clone + ad monetization) is nothing new, not something "nobody knows about": the category is full of these, and this one is copying others too. Just in terms of this app specifically, few people know about it yet.

### 6. Why it took off (by weight)

1. **Name riding** : it inherits the search demand and name recognition built up by the original SmoothX's 19M installs, so cold start costs almost nothing.

2. **Matrix** : the same company put out 5–10 same-name clones in one month, and a few took off (Speaker Cleaner 800k, Silly Smile 220k). The wallpaper one is just mid-tier.

3. **High rating** : 4.7 and 1,169 ratings suggest a likely rating prompt, which protects search conversion.

4. **High-value markets + heavy ads** : charting is concentrated in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, where ad CPMs are high. With 3,000 installs a day and ads on app open, it's probably already cash-flow positive (inferred).

5. Has nothing to do with the product or timing. Clones have no moat: the original can file a complaint and get them removed, Play can flag them as duplicate content, or the next same-name app can eat their traffic.

### 7. Differentiation

No differentiation. Its only "difference" is **in distribution** : using an identical name to siphon search traffic from others, then adding rating prompts and ad monetization. That's why it works, but it's the low-volume, short-cycle kind of work.

### 8. What to borrow

- Same-name / near-name capture as a cold-start tactic: understand why it works (Play search matches exact names very strongly), and know the risks (trademark / impersonation complaints, duplicate content policies).

- Matrix it: ship 5–10 utility apps in a month and allocate resources based on which ones take off.

- Rating-gated prompts push the rating rate to 2× the original's, with a 4.7 rating holding up search conversion.

- Pick high-CPM markets to chart first (Japan, Korea, Taiwan).

### 9. Uncertain

- Whether and how much it spends on paid acquisition (the ad libraries don't cover it).

- Whether the jumps on 10-20 / 10-24 come from paid spend or store featuring.

- The rating prompt is inferred; I haven't installed the app to verify.

- Where the developer is actually based (guessed as Vietnam from email and website).

- The scale of ad and in-app purchase revenue; no grossing-chart signal.

- Whether the original SmoothX will file a complaint and whether Play will act on it.
