# A farm map selling raw milk and grass-fed beef, but you pay before you can see it: Localize's secret is a guy who roasts supermarkets

**What it is** A US local farm map app that finds nearby farms for things supermarkets don't sell: grass-fed beef, raw milk, raw honey, tallow skincare. Without a membership fee, you can't see anything.

**Why it took off** The founder first built about 500k followers with content against big food. The brand account then posted 6+ short videos a day of "scary supermarket food news + go find a farm on the app." It caught people riding the MAHA and raw milk wave who couldn't find supply. The hard paywall keeps downloads modest, but Top Grossing ranks high.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Localize in the US. Take the same structure into a narrower niche (raw milk, game meat, local beekeepers) or another country: first grow a stance-driven content account, then launch a directory app that lets people see how many farms are nearby before any paywall.

Grade B: willingness to pay in this audience is real, and pure paid-acquisition copycats have reached Top Grossing #26, yet few people know about it. But its real moat is the founder's personal account and several pieces of content a day. Followers have to build that from scratch, and three US players are already copying it. An Austin sports nutritionist spent half a year on short videos bashing "big food companies" and built a following of several hundred thousand. Then he launched a local farm map that you have to pay to open. Ten months later it holds steady in the top six of the US App Store Food & Drink Top Grossing chart. The product itself is easy to build. The hard part is getting a group of people to pay for it. Below: what it sells, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, who is already copying it, and where you could break in if you want to follow.

### "Released yesterday"

On Jan 6 2026, Zephyr Zoidis posted on LinkedIn that his app had "launched yesterday." The same day, the brand's TikTok posted an announcement video: "Announcing Localize: find small farms and ranches near you and support them directly. 30,000+ farms, 27+ categories, 218,000+ products." As of today that video has 14k views, not a viral hit.

But he wasn't starting from zero. Zoidis's LinkedIn lists him as a Performance Nutritionist. He's been posting content about "decentralized food systems" on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook since August 2025, focused on fitness and sports nutrition. At launch his personal accounts across the three platforms had about 500k followers combined (TikTok @zephzoid 46k, Instagram 304k, Facebook 135k, 11-06). On day 11 after launch he posted again on LinkedIn: it hit #40 on the App Store overall chart, "ahead of dozens of big food and fast food companies."

By Nov 6, the iOS app had 21,105 US ratings averaging 4.83 stars and ranked #5 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart. Since Oct 28 it has stayed between #4 and #6, adding 41 to 126 ratings a day.

### What it actually is

It's a farm map with product filters on top. The first line of the store page already carries a stance:

> Corporate consolidation is ruining our food system... (Corporate consolidation is ruining our food system...)

What follows is what it pushes: "Raw milk and raw honey, so fresh it's illegal in supermarkets", "Ditch toxic chemicals, find handmade tallow skincare", "From specialty meat farms raising bison and elk to grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chicken..." To farms it says "we take 0%", and its website slogan for farms is "Sell to 1.5M+ Americans, 0 commission."

A line of small print at the very bottom reads: "Local deals, maps, and ordering require a membership." That's a hard paywall: no payment, no view. Prices reported in reviews vary: some say annual fees of $30, $50, or $60, and others say they were charged $11, $35, or $40. The in-app purchase listed on Google Play is $19.99–44.99. It's likely testing prices or running several tiers: monthly, annual, and different discounts.

### Where users come from

Mainly content, and the content and the product tell the same story.

**The founder's personal account gathers the audience first.** Zoidis argues a stance: supermarket food is a problem, so buy directly from local farms. That lands right on a cluster of topics that have been hot in the US for 2025–26 years: MAHA ("Make America Healthy Again"), legalizing raw milk, grass-fed beef, tallow skincare, and opposition to ultra-processed food. These people want to find supply, but their only tools are LocalHarvest, late-1990s web directories, and Facebook groups.

**The brand account publishes like a newsroom.** TikTok @localizefood.app posted 10 videos in 2,004 months, averaging more than 6 a day, syndicated to Instagram and Threads. Look at the week from late October into early November:

| Date | What the video covers | TikTok views |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | Collab with creator @thehaydenjfox, "the truth is out" | 308k |
| 10-30 | Pouring clumps out of a FairLife protein shake | 1,642 |
| 10-31 | A mom nearly fed her kid a "rubber watermelon" | 3,021 |
| 11-01 | Supermarket beef vs. local ranch beef, "making Americans rethink everything" | 282k |
| 11-02 | A customer peeling the wax coating off fruit and vegetables | 21k |
| 11-05 | A video of Chinese workers soaking cabbage in formaldehyde | 30k |

The template is fixed: a scary food news story, then "go find a farm near you on Localize." Most videos get only a few thousand views, but every few days one passes 200k. The Apr 20 post "Decentralize the Food System" has 230k.

**Comment one word, get the link automatically.** The Instagram and Facebook Reels say "Comment \"Localize\"", and commenters automatically receive the download link. Engagement turns straight into downloads, comment counts rise, and the algorithm pushes it further.

**Plus organic shout-outs from niche creators and Meta ads.** Raw food and ancestral diet creators on TikTok post about the app on their own, and one post is explicitly tagged "not sponsored." AppFuel has indexed several video ads the app ran on its own Facebook page, running for 56 to 99 days. How much was spent can't be determined. No mainstream media coverage was found, and there's almost no discussion on X. Its traffic comes from TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

### Where the money comes from, and why the rating is so high

After downloading, users go through 8 onboarding steps, see "how many farms near you sell grass-fed beef," and then hit the paywall: a 7-day trial plus 50% off (ScreensDesign broke down its onboarding flow).

Its chart ranking runs well ahead of its download count. The Android version launched in Oct 16, and by 11-06 had only 5,725 installs, yet it ranked #13 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart (Google Play, 11-06). On iOS it hit #32 on Top Free and #5 on Top Grossing. ScreensDesign estimates 200k installs and $100k in revenue per month. That's a third-party estimate with no public revenue to check against.

The 4.83-star average needs a discount. One three-star review put it plainly:

> they prompt you to rate the app first and then they spring on you that you have to pay a subscription

On the latest page of reviews, one-star and five-star ratings are roughly split. Complaints cluster around three issues:

- **Paywall** : "To see which farms are around, I first had to pay for a subscription" and "I'm not paying $60 to find out whether anyone nearby uses it."

- **Stale data** : "90% of the farms listed within 100 miles of me closed more than 2020 years ago" and "at least two have been shut for over two years."

- **Hard to cancel** : "I canceled the trial, and it still tries to charge me $35 every few days" and "emailed for a refund, no reply in two weeks."

The positive reviews share one tone: "Didn't expect so many farms near me" and "No more digging through outdated websites and dead phone numbers." Some also mention that if you can't afford it, you can email for a free code.

### Who it's competing with

"Finding local farms" has been done before. Nobody just turned it into a subscription business:

| Product | Form | Scale | How it differs from Localize |
|---|---|---|---|
| LocalHarvest | Web, about 1998 years | Established national directory | Free yellow pages, no app, doesn't touch raw milk or tallow |
| USDA local food directory | Government web maps | National farmers market | Bad experience, can't browse by product |
| Locally Grown: Local Farms | iOS + Android | iOS US store 526 ratings; Play 75k installs | Leans toward ordering and delivery; no membership fee; no content account driving traffic |
| Market Wagon, Barn2Door | Delivery platforms, farm SaaS | Small | Take commissions or software fees from farms |
| Facebook farm groups | Free | Huge | Reddit users recommend it as a free alternative, but you can't filter by product |

After it took off, at least three iOS apps copying it appeared between 2026 and 6 and August:

- **Farm To Table: Farmers Market** (VIRALYZE LLP, listed 6-17): 116 ratings, peaked at #26 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, nearly identical copy, also pushing grass-fed beef and raw honey.

- **Grownhome** (listed 8-09): 54 ratings, also says "30,000+ farms, one map."

- **Reroot** (listed 7-06): 16 ratings.

Farm To Table is the most notable. With only 116 ratings and no founder account behind it, it still hit #26 on Top Grossing. My guess (inference): this audience really does pay, and paid ads alone can bring in money, but the scale is under 1% of Localize's.

### How deep is its moat

The product has almost no moat. The farm data is most likely scraped from public directories and then tidied up (inference), and many bad reviews complain the data is outdated. A map, category filters and a paywall can be built by one person in a few weeks.

What actually blocks others is distribution: a founder with a strong stance and hundreds of thousands of followers, plus a news account posting 6 times a day. Followers can't get either of those ready-made. The founder's audience has to be built from scratch; the news account can be copied, but it takes months to gain traction.

So copying Localize as-is isn't worth it. What's worth learning is its structure: find a group with strong convictions that mainstream channels don't serve, build a directory that helps them find things, feed it a steady stream of content, then collect money with a hard paywall.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** don't build another Localize in the US. Use the same structure in a different category or country: grow the content account first, then launch the app. The places Localize gets wrong (outdated data, nothing visible before paying, hard cancellation) are your way in.

**Who it suits:** 1–2 people, one of whom is already part of a "counter-mainstream" lifestyle community and can make opinionated short videos every day: raw food, wild game, natural parenting, toxin-free home, raw pet food; the other can ship a map, directory and paywall within a month. It also suits non-English speakers who can port the model to Canada, the UK, Australia, or German-speaking regions' organic and raw-milk communities (inference that similar audiences exist there; size not verified).

**Who it doesn't suit:** people who only want to code and won't appear on camera or edit video every day, since the product is the least valuable part of this business; anyone who wants to head-to-head the "local farm" keyword in the US, where Localize is already in the top six grossing and three copycats are following it; anyone who can't handle half the reviews being one-star and someone accusing them of "profiting under a political banner", because a stance-driven product will always attract opponents.

**How to do it:**

- Pick a category narrower than "all farms": for example raw milk only, or wild game, local beekeepers, pasture-raised eggs. That way you can hand-verify the data, and you beat Localize directly on accuracy.

- Before the paywall, let people see "there are N farms near you, here's one of them," turning the most common complaint in the bad reviews into a selling point.

- Make the cancel option obvious, and reply to support emails the same day.

- Also open a free farm sign-up page, charge farms 0 commission, and let the supply side keep the listings updated.

**How to get users:** copy Localize's news-account template: several "scary supermarket food news" clips a day, each ending with "find X near you on the app," posted to TikTok, Instagram, Threads and Facebook at once. Reels with "comment a word and get the link sent automatically." Film collabs with creators in the niche; one of Localize's two top-performing videos was a collab. Once the content account has tens of thousands of followers and single posts reliably pass 10k views, start Meta ads. Farm To Table shows that pure ad spend can still bring in money, just at a small scale.

**When to start:** US farmers market and farm-direct season ramps up in spring, so you need to launch before April 2027, which means starting the content account by late 2026. Stance-driven topics have hype cycles too: build while MAHA and raw milk are still hot.

**Signs that would mean you read it wrong:**

1. Localize's iOS app dropped out of the US store's Food & Drink Top Grossing top 20 for a full month in the first half of 2027, which suggests this crowd isn't paying, or that refunds on the paywall are dragging revenue down.

2. Copycats that rely only on paid ads, like Farm To Table and Grownhome, stopped updating or were pulled within six months. Without a content account it doesn't work, so build the content account before anything else.

3. Apple or Google may start cracking down on apps that "ask for a rating before the paywall" or make trial cancellation hard, which would narrow this monetization path.

4. If Google Maps or Facebook launches product-level filtering for local farms, the directory layer loses its value.

## Why Localize - Farmers Market (com.localizefood.app) took off

### One line

It's a US app for mapping and buying direct from local farms, listing 3–50k farms and ranches. It features grass-fed beef, raw milk, raw honey and tallow skincare, things supermarkets don't sell, takes a 0% commission from farms, and earns from a hard-paywall subscription. Its Android version (listed 2026-10-16) is just a **port** . The real breakout is the iOS version listed 2025-12-29: as of 2026-11-06 it had 21,033 US ratings and ranked #4–6 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart. The traffic comes from founder Zephyr Zoidis's personal anti-food-industry content (roughly 500k followers combined across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook), plus a brand account posting several "food system news" short videos a day. Distribution is the main reason. The product itself is an ordinary "directory + map," but the positioning is sharp: the MAHA / raw milk / grass-fed wave was already rising, and no solid app had captured it.

### 1. Data (from our database)

- **Google Play** (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 → 11-06): installs 1,522 → 5,725 (up 4,203 in 7 days), rating 200 → 370, steadily gaining about 22 ratings a day; best rank #13 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart. The other dozen-plus countries sit around #38–41, noise from small countries sharing the same aggregate chart. Play listing date 2026-10-16. In-app purchase prices range from $19.99–$44.99.

- **iOS** (appstore library + iTunes lookup): id 6756440767, launched 2025-12-29, current version 3.6.4 (2026-11-04). US rating count 2026-10-28 is 20,186,11-06 is 21,033, adding 41–126 ratings a day, 721 total over 7 days; average 4.83 stars. 2026-11-06 it ranked **#5 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart** and #32 on Top Free, and since 10-28 has stayed in the #4–6 range. Other countries have essentially 0 ratings, so almost all users are in the US.

- Third-party estimate: ScreensDesign estimates 200k installs a month and $100k monthly revenue (estimate, unverified) [screensdesign.com/showcase/localize-farmers-market]. The official site claims "1.5M+ members · 50,000+ farms · 4.8 star 20,000+ ratings" [localizefood.com]. Meta AI's summary of Facebook discussion says "claims 350k users."

- Timeline: the founder 2026-01-06 posted on LinkedIn "launched yesterday"; on day 11 after launch they posted again that it hit #40 on the App Store, "ahead of dozens of big food and fast-food companies" [LinkedIn posts activity-7414405521149075456, 7418047571421507584]. In other words, it was already charting in its second week after launch.

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Localize |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LocalHarvest | Web | Around 1998 | Long-established directory, CSA alone lists 4,000+ farms | Web yellow pages, free, no app or content; no ideological angle like "raw milk / tallow" |
| USDA Local Food Directories | Website (government) | Years | National farmers market directory | official data, bad UX, no product dimension |
| Eatwild / RealMilk.com | Web | Years | grass-fed, raw milk niche directory | single category, no map app |
| Locally Grown: Local Farms(JohnAnge Kernodle) | iOS + Android | iOS 2023-08 / Play 2025-05 | iOS US store 526 ratings; Play 74,929 installs (7 days +2,772) | leans toward farm ordering and delivery tools, charges no membership fee; no content IP driving installs |
| Market Wagon / Barn2Door | iOS / web (farm-side SaaS) | 2016 / about 2015 | Market Wagon has only 24 ratings on iOS | delivery, or selling software to farms and taking a commission; Localize takes 0 commission from farms and charges consumers |
| Farmish, PickFresh, Co-op app, roadside.market, FarmPixie, FarmScout | iOS / web | 2022–2025 | Dozens to 273 ratings | neighbor trading or free directories, no traffic |
| Farm To Table: Farmers Market(VIRALYZE LLP) | iOS | 2026-06-17 | 116 ratings, best rank #26 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart | **Copycats** : app studios doing the same thing, with nearly identical copy (grass-fed beef, raw honey) |
| Grownhome - Local Farm Finder(David Tong) | iOS | 2026-08-09 | 54 ratings, best rank #170 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart | **Copycats** : same pitch, "30,000+ farms, one map" |
| Reroot: Find Local Food | iOS | 2026-07-06 | 16 ratings | copycats or same-period entrants, same raw honey and grass-fed copy |
| Google Maps / Facebook farm groups | Big-company features | — | Huge | People on Reddit recommend "Facebook farm-to-table groups" as a free alternative; there is no filtering by product category and no curated list |

Verdict: "finding local farms" was done long ago, and web directories are everywhere, but **Localize is the only one that treats it as a subscription business inside an app, with a content IP driving installs** . Since it took off, at least 3 copycat apps have appeared since 2026 6–August, and one has already reached #26 on the Top Grossing chart.

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Founder personal IP (confirmed, main channel)** : Zephyr Zoidis, with a background in fitness coaching and sports nutrition (LinkedIn lists Performance Nutritionist and Zephyr Performance Co.), based in Austin. Accounts: TikTok @zephzoid 46k followers, 2.83M likes, 1,327 videos; Instagram @zephzoid 304k followers; Facebook 135k followers. He has been posting "anti big food company" content since 2025-08, building an audience before launching the app. His TikTok "App is linked in bio! ... over 30,000 farms" got 48k views (2026-01-05); on Facebook, "We need to Decentralize the Food System" got 20k+ engagements. [TikHub; public Instagram/Facebook pages]

2. **Brand account running high-frequency "food news" content (confirmed)** : TikTok @localizefood.app 58k followers, 1.86M likes, **2,004 videos** (10 months, averaging more than 6 per day), cross-posted to Instagram and Threads. The formula is "supermarket food scare news + go to Localize to find a farm": supermarket beef vs. local pasture beef comparisons (2026-11-1.28M views), produce waxing, formaldehyde-soaked cabbage, FairLife shake clumping, raw milk legislation, with a 200k+ hit every few days (2026-04-20 "Decentralize the Food System" 230k; 10-29 collab with @thehaydenjfox 308k). [TikHub 2026-11-06 scrape]

3. **"Comment 'Localize' and we'll DM you" (confirmed)** : Instagram/Facebook Reels use "Comment 'Localize'" (ManyChat-style auto-DM) to turn engagement directly into download links, while also boosting algorithmic reach. [instagram.com/reel/DTJNGbuAeLk, facebook zephzoid video]

4. **Creators and organic user UGC (confirmed)** : On TikTok, vv_abundant (13k views), ieatrawfood33 (10k, tagged "not sponsored"), casebradford, alpalmayne and other creators in the primal/raw food/MAHA circles are showing off the app; Facebook groups and Reddit users recommend it unprompted.

5. **Meta paid ads (confirmed, scale unclear)** : AppFuel has indexed several self-run ad videos from its Page 994917550364379, running for 56–99 days [theappfuel.com/app/6756440767]. Our metaads library does not track this Page, so the number of active ads is unknown.

6. **In-app conversion design (confirmed)** : a 8-step onboarding flow that first shows "how many farms near you sell grass-fed beef," then a hard paywall + 7-day trial + 50% off, plus invite codes [ScreensDesign].

7. **Two-sided flywheel promotion (partly confirmed)** : the website pitches farmers with "Sell to 1.5M+ Americans, 0% commission," attracting farms to join and in turn expanding the directory.

8. **Media and X** : no mainstream media coverage found. In the x-radar corpus, searches for "localize farm" and "localizefood" each return 0 relevant results; almost no discussion on X; no public revenue and not listed on TrustMRR.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Timing** : In 2025–2026 MAHA, raw milk legalization, grass-fed/tallow skincare, and "anti ultra-processed food" are hot topics in the US. The brand account itself chases stories like "bipartisan lawmakers push to allow interstate raw milk sales." This crowd has a strong need to find products, but their tools are old web directories like LocalHarvest and Facebook groups.

- **Distribution** : The founder first built a "decentralized food system" persona with a few hundred thousand followers, so there was a ready audience on launch day. Since then, the news account's industrial output (more than 6 per day) keeps producing hits. The CTA is always "go to the app to find a farm near you," making content and product one and the same.

- **Ideological selling point written straight into store copy** : "Corporate consolidation is ruining our food system," "legally too fresh for grocery stores." For this audience, a subscription carries a statement of identity, so willingness to pay is higher than for an ordinary utility.

- **Business model** : 0 commission from farms in exchange for a large directory and farms promoting the app themselves; consumers subscribe behind a hard paywall. This is why its chart rank sits well above what its download count would suggest: on Play, only 5.7k installs was enough to reach #13 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, and on iOS it holds steadily in the top 6.

- **Data moat is weak, but it moved first** : 3–50k farms and 218k products, most likely scraped from public data and then organized (unverified). Anyone can replicate it. Copycats have already appeared, but they have no content IP, and currently sit at under 1% of Localize's scale.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with old directories (LocalHarvest, USDA): native app + map + filtering by product category (raw milk, tallow, bison), plus an aggregated "local deals" layer. Compared with marketplaces like Market Wagon and Barn2Door: no farm commission, no logistics, discovery only, with consumers paying a membership fee. Compared with copycats: **the only real difference is the founder's IP and content machine** ; the features are nearly identical. So product differentiation isn't the main reason it took off. "Content IP + a trending audience + a hard paywall" is.

### 6. What to borrow

- First build a values-driven lifestyle persona on a personal account, then launch a directory app that "helps this crowd find things"; each piece of content's CTA maps one-to-one to a product feature.

- The "news account" template: systematically track negative industry news, attach one line of product CTA, post several times a day across TikTok, IG, Threads and FB simultaneously.

- Turn free public data into a directory, charge the supply side a 0 commission for coverage, and sell subscriptions to demand via a hard paywall; in onboarding, first show "N near you" based on the user's location, so they see the value before the paywall appears.

- The same playbook can apply to other niche supply that mainstream channels don't carry: game meat, local beekeepers, farm eggs, handmade skincare, non-GMO seeds, and so on, and it can be moved to other countries.

### 7. Still unclear

- Real revenue: ScreensDesign estimates $100k/month. We only have chart rankings as supporting evidence, with no visibility into paid conversion or renewal rates.

- What counts toward the 1.5M members figure (signups, downloads, or trials).

- How much of acquisition comes from Meta ad spend.

- Where the farm data comes from (scraping or farms submitting it themselves) and how accurate it is: a LinkedIn comment complains that many farms are missing business hours and products.

- Whether the near-exact 22 ratings per day on Play is artificially driven. Unverified.
