2.4 stars, a wave of complaints, 1.49M installs in two months: a Vietnamese publisher's AI portrait reskin relay
What it is An Android app where you upload a selfie and apply templates to get AI portraits and holiday photos. It is free and earns through ads.
Why it took off A Vietnamese publisher first ran the same app as Flixart to prove the funnel, then swapped package names and accounts and re-ran it. In October they added a Halloween theme and increased ad spend, relying on heavy ad coverage to pay back, mostly from cheap installs in India.
CHow you could follow it Not recommended to copy outright. If you have a paid acquisition team, borrow its method of rotating holiday themes and relaying package names, but switch to credits or subscriptions and use real users' faces to generate images, and launch before Christmas.

Lumpix - AI Photo Generator went up on Google Play in Aug 11, had only 10k installs by early September, reached 6M by Nov 1.49, and has added 7k more in the last 237 days. Its rating is 2.4 stars, and nearly all the negative reviews complain about ads. It didn't take off because the product is good: a Vietnamese publisher first ran the same template through a sister app to 1M installs, then re-ran it under a new package name and developer account. In October they added a Halloween theme, and ad spend went up with it. Below: how it got started, where the money comes from, and whether you should copy it.
The most-liked review
Sep 14, a one-star review from an Indian store user: "I uploaded my own image and it used the default person from the image idea… you're better off using ChatGPT." By Nov 6,80, it had been marked helpful by enough people to become the app's most-liked review. The second most-liked came from Oct 16 with 63 likes: "ads cover nearly the entire screen… it just spit out the template unchanged without using the source image at all."
Between these two reviews, its install count rose from over 10k to over 80 million (Google Play install count, third-party estimate, 10-13).
What it is
A template-based AI portrait app: upload a selfie, pick a template, and get an AI portrait, a styled photo or a holiday-themed image; you can also generate images from text. The first selling point in the store description is "🎃 Seasonal & Spooky Themes", describing gothic looks, dusk moods and Halloween photos with "no makeup and no costumes needed". Halloween had already passed by Nov 6, and the description has not been updated.
Free, marked "Contains ads," no in-app purchases. Third-party estimates put it at about 290k MAU and over $10k in monthly revenue, 100% of it from ads (AppGoblin estimate). The app ships 10 ad network SDKs (Google AdMob, Facebook, AppLovin, Unity, etc.) plus 2 mediation layers, and also a ByteDance Volcano Engine SDK. The image generation likely runs on a cheap Volcano / BytePlus API (inferred, not verified).
Who made it: a Hanoi publisher with a paid acquisition team
The developer account is MinsapCorp, the site points to mnpfuture.com, and the homepage reads "YUTALABS – GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY." Partners listed are Google, Meta, Unity and Mintegral. They're hiring for "UA Marketing" (paid user acquisition) and recruiting publishing partners, whose second step is "run targeted paid campaigns with a set budget to validate." The company is Yuta Labs in Hanoi.
The same site runs at least two Play developer accounts:
| Account | Product | Launched | Installs (11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| MinhThao | Flixart - AI Photo Generator | 6-19 | 1.06M |
| MinhThao | Artisol - AI Video Generator | 7-04 | 470k |
| MinsapCorp | Lumpix - AI Photo Generator | 8-11 | 1.49M |
| MinsapCorp | App lock, game booster, music player, video downloader, and similar | From ¥2025 | Combined accounts ~10M (AppBrain) |
Flixart and Lumpix share the same naming format, and both use packages like com.xxx.aiphotogenerator. Flixart took off in July, peaking in August at 2 to 50k installs a day, then slowed in September. Lumpix launched in August and took over in October. This is a common paid-acquisition studio pattern: when one package's rating gets dragged down by bad reviews and ads get pricier, you swap in a new package name and account and keep buying (inferred; the timeline fits).
Side note: there's an App Store app also called "Lumpix: AI Photo and Video" and a site at lum.pics. Neither is related. They belong to a developer named Anton Karavaev, mainly in the Russian store, and the name is just a coincidence.
Where users come from: paid acquisition, plus one holiday
The install curve is stepped. From mid-to-late September it ran roughly 5,000 to 9,000 installs a day. From October 1 to 4, it jumped from 122k to 410k over 4 days, then grew 15 to 250k a week, reaching ~1.26M by October 27 (third-party estimate). Our own daily count: October 29 at 1.26M, November 6 at 1.49M, averaging about 30k a day.
A jump of 4 days adding 290k looks nothing like organic growth. It looks like ad budgets switching on. The indirect evidence points the same way: the parent site names four ad platforms, the app integrates Adjust (which tracks which ad each install came from), and reviews keep saying "doesn't do what the add said" and "The ad leads you to believe it's something it isn't," so people arrived through ads. Which platforms and what each install cost are not visible from outside.
The traction started in early October, four weeks before Halloween. The first line of its listing is Halloween-themed, and it shipped a new version on Oct 26. Holiday-themed assets are easier to click, which is the other half of why it took off in October.
Almost no other channels: YouTube has three Hindi "how to use Lumpix" tutorials with 3,857, 1,038 and 434 views. Searching "lumpix" on TikTok turns up nothing but sales videos for a smart photo frame with the same name. On X, nobody mentioned it in 60 days, and no media covered it.
On the charts it only holds up in India: in early November it ranked #7 to #18 in the free Photography chart there, bounced between #120 and #200 in the UK and UAE, and never charted in any country's grossing ranks.
Where the money comes from: retention doesn't matter
钱的逻辑很简单:一个用户从打开到卸载,只要看完的广告比买他进来花的钱多,就能一直投。所以广告越塞越满。差评原话:"Half the screen is an ad and it shows another ad every 3 seconds"(半个屏幕是广告,每 3 秒再弹一个),"must watch ads for tutorials"(看教程也得先看广告)。还有好几条说一打开就是 Muse 的广告、关不掉,Muse 是同类竞品 Muselab AI,它在 Lumpix 里买广告位,把 Lumpix 的用户再买走。
Rough math on ~$10k+ monthly revenue against ~30k installs a day: each install returns only a few cents on average (estimate). That only breaks even in a market as cheap to acquire as India, so it's likely a thin margin (unverified). With 849 ratings against ~30k installs a day, fewer than one in a thousand users leave a review. Many of the 5-star reviews are just a name ("Santosh Barik ♥️," "Nitish Kumar"), which may be the result of an in-app prompt asking for a rating (inferred).
Who else is competing: dozens of identical shells
This niche is crowded. Since May 2026, there are 76 photo apps on Play with names containing AI Photo / AI Image / AI Art / Photo Generator. Together they have 92M installs, 22 of them have passed 1M, and in the last 7 days they added 4.47M between them. Half of India's top 40 free Photography apps are this year's AI portrait shells (Google Play, 11-06).
| Competitors | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Compared with Lumpix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refoto: AI Image & Video Maker | 2025-12 | 24.6M installs, #3 in India's free Photography chart | Same template-portrait model, 16x its scale |
| AI Photo Generator: Muselab AI | 2026-04 | 5.36M installs, 7-day +920k | Same category, also buying ads inside Lumpix |
| AI Photo Studio: Art Magic | 2026-08-07 | 3.85M installs | Launched the same week, same playbook, bigger scale |
| AI Art Magic - Photo Creator | 2026-05 | 3.1M installs, 7-day +500k | Same category, growing faster |
| Shots - AI Photo & Video Maker | 2025-07 | 2.55M installs, #74 in Turkey's Top Grossing chart | Has in-app purchases, actually collects money from users |
| Remini / Picsart / Hypic | 2011–2023 | 130M to 1.4B installs | Established, subscription pricing, full feature set |
| Gemini / ChatGPT image generation | From ¥2025 | Built in, free | Better output, named directly in reviews |
Mistmere, launched Oct 16, climbed to 230k in 7 days. Nobody copied anyone: dozens of teams were building the same thing at once. What Lumpix had extra was just two things: paid acquisition and ad monetization done well, plus a holiday-theme refresh rhythm.
If it were you
One-line verdict: this is worth learning from, but not worth chasing. It makes money from the gap between ad spend and ad revenue, not from the product itself, and this niche already has dozens of identical shells fighting over the same Indian users.
Who it suits: studios that already have a paid acquisition team, ad-monetization experience, and a pipeline for repeatedly reskinning utility apps. For them, it's just another category, and copying it is cheap.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers and small teams that don't buy ads. Without paid acquisition, an app like this gets essentially no organic users in the store, and its own YouTube tutorials add up to only 5,000 views.
If you do build one, how:
- Don't copy its ad density. Copy Shots instead: give a few images for free, then charge through credit packs or a weekly subscription, and aim for the Top Grossing chart. 2.4-star ratings are already dragging down its store conversion, and acquisition costs will only rise.
- Fix the most-criticized problem first: generating from a template and returning the original photo. Real-face output is what the two most-liked negative reviews are asking for.
- Copy its holiday rhythm: one shell, with templates, descriptions and creatives swapped out for each holiday.
How to get users: Google App campaigns plus Meta. Start by testing creative on cheap installs in India and Southeast Asia, and see how much ad and in-app purchase revenue each install returns. Only add budget once you break even. Put broad terms like "AI Photo Generator" in the app name to pick up some store search traffic.
When to be early: Diwali is on Nov 8, which is already too late. The next window is Christmas and New Year: templates and creatives need to be live by early December, and Valentine's Day by late January.
Signs you've misread it: if Lumpix or its peers keep adding tens of thousands of installs a day after Halloween and start charting in grossing, this shell model pays back better than estimated. Conversely, if its daily installs fall to a few thousand in November and the same studio launches a new package, "X - AI Photo Generator," then this one has run its course and the package-swap relay has moved to the next runner.

Why Lumpix - AI Photo Generator (com.lumpix.aiphotogenerator) took off
Channel: Google Play; developer account MinsapCorp (Yuta Labs / MNPFuture in Hanoi, Vietnam); launched 2026-08-11; research day 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It didn't take off on product. A Vietnamese paid-acquisition publisher ran its standard playbook: an "AI photo" shell, seasonal creatives, and heavy ad monetization. The same studio validated the template with Flixart in June, reaching 1M installs. In August it switched package names and accounts and launched Lumpix. In October it added a Halloween theme and boosted spend, and installs grew to 1.49M in two months. Money comes from ads, not in-app purchases (AppGoblin estimates 100% of revenue is from ads). The product reputation is poor (2.4★, with reviews mostly complaining about ads), and it has no real differentiation in this niche.
1. Data (our database + AppstoreSpy estimates)
- Install curve (Google Play library
app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates; daily adds are averaged across observation gaps):- 09-09 had only 11k installs; in mid-to-late September it was adding about 0.5–9k per day;
- 10-01 to 10-04 jumped sharply: 122k → 410k (+290k over 4 days);
- In October it added 15–250k per week: 10-08 589k, 10-13 840k, 10-21 1.11M, 10-27 1.26M;
- Our own collection (Google Play
app_day): 10-29 1.26M → 11-06 1.49M, +237k over 7 days, averaging about 30k installs per day.
- Charts (Google Play
chart_rank, 10-29 to 11-06): Only the India free Photography category chart holds up, ranking 7–18 (best 11-02 at #7; on the same day it also squeezed into #200 on the India overall apps chart). It hit the UK free Photography chart at 123–187 and the UAE at 145–199; Australia, the Netherlands, Poland, and France appeared occasionally at 180–200. It has never charted in any Top Grossing list. - Ratings: 2.4★ from 849 ratings (11-06). Histogram 1★ 526 / 2★ 0 / 3★ 16 / 4★ 67 / 5★ 237, polarized at both ends. Ratings grow by 7–32 per day; relative to roughly 30k installs per day, the review rate is under 0.1%.
- Monetization: The store page says "Contains ads" and there are no in-app purchases (Google Play
app_snap: offers_iap = False, ad_supported = True). AppGoblin estimates ~292k MAU and $10K+ monthly revenue, with ads at 100% and IAP at 0% (https://appgoblin.info/apps/com.lumpix.aiphotogenerator). - SDKs (AppGoblin 09-23 scan): 10 ad network SDKs (Google / AdMob, Facebook, AppLovin, Unity, etc.), 2 mediation layers (Unity, AdMob). Attribution uses Adjust, analytics uses Firebase, and there is one Volcengine (ByteDance's Volcano Engine) SDK. My guess is that image generation runs on Volcano / BytePlus models, but I have not verified this.
2. Who's behind it: developers and portfolio
- The developer site mnpfuture.com's homepage reads YUTALABS – GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY, lists partners Google, Meta, Unity, and Mintegral, and is hiring for Mobile Developer, Product Owner, and UA Marketing. It also recruits externally for "Publisher Partnership," where step two is "validate with a targeted UA campaign on a set budget" (https://mnpfuture.com/). The company is CÔNG TY TNHH CÔNG NGHỆ YUTA LABS in Vietnam (topcv.vn, itviec, and the Facebook page list a Hanoi address). AppGoblin tags MinsapCorp as 🇻🇳.
- The same domain, mnpfuture.com, is attached to at least two Play developer accounts (Google Play library
app.developer_domain):- MinsapCorp ([email protected]): Lumpix, plus TurboGear game mode, ShieldMe app lock, MusicTunes music player, and HDClip video downloader (Play developer page). AppBrain says this account has 6 apps with roughly 10M installs combined, active since 2025, and the site lists both yutalabs.com and mnpfuture.com.
- MinhThao ([email protected] / [email protected]): Flixart - AI Photo Generator (launched 06-19, 1.06M installs), Artisol - AI Video Generator (07-4.47M), FitHealth (190k), DialGuard (11k).
- Flixart and Lumpix share the exact same name format ("X - AI Photo Generator", package name com.xxx.aiphotogenerator), and both sit on the India Photo & Video free chart. Flixart took off in July, fastest in August (2–50k a day), then slowed in September. Lumpix launched right at 8-11 and took over with a surge in October. This is classic "reskin relay": when one package's paid acquisition gets too expensive or its rating is sunk by bad reviews, you swap in a new package name and a new account and keep spending.
- Correction to the recall card: The recall card said the iOS "Lumpix: AI Photo and Video" (id6761535196) and the official site lum.pics were its "iOS Western subscription line." On checking, they are not the same company. The iOS app's developer is anton karavaev, launched 2026-04-06, and it mainly charts in the Russian store (appstore library: #16 on the Russia free Photography chart, with only 6 ratings; iTunes lookup). lum.pics sells couple and family portraits on iPhone. It's just a name collision. So the "Android India ads + iOS Western subscriptions" dual-track theory does not hold.
3. Competitors
The same concept (upload a selfie → apply a template to get an AI portrait, outfit swap, or festive style) is crowded on Play. In the Google Play library, 2026-05 or later, Photography apps with names containing AI Photo / AI Image / AI Art / Photo Generator number 76 apps totaling 92M installs, of which 22 passed 1M. Over the last 7 days they added 4.47M installs combined. Half of the top 40 on India's free Photography chart (11-06) are AI portrait shells launched in the past 2026 year(s).
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How Lumpix differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Refoto: AI Image & Video Maker(mAst App 2026) | Android | 2025-12 | 24.6M installs, +7k in 590 days, #3 in India's free Photography chart | Same template-portrait model, 16x its scale |
| AI Photo Generator: Muselab AI(Shotcut Video Workshop) | Android | 2026-04 | 5.36M installs, 7-day +920k | Same category, and it buys ad placements inside Lumpix (several bad reviews say opening it shows Muse ads) |
| AI Art Magic - Photo Creator(SSon Studio) | Android | 2026-05 | 3.1M installs, 7-day +500k | Same category, growing faster |
| AI Photo Studio: Art Magic(FunPrank) | Android | 2026-08-07 | 3.85M installs, +250k in 7 days, #10 in India | Launched the same week as Lumpix, at a larger scale |
| Shots - AI Photo & Video Maker(DeePix) | Android | 2025-07 | 2.55M installs, #74 in Turkey's Top Grossing chart | Has in-app purchases and actually collects money |
| Flixart - AI Photo Generator (MinhThao, same studio) | Android | 2026-06 | 1.06M installs, 7-day +120k | Earlier-generation reskin of it |
| Remini / Picsart / Hypic (Bending Spoons / PicsArt / ByteDance) | Android+iOS | 2011–2023 | From 130M to 1.4B installs, all in Top Grossing | Established, subscription monetization, full feature set |
| Gemini (Nano Banana) / ChatGPT image generation / Meta AI | Big-company features | From ¥2025 | Built in, free | Verbatim review: "better off using ChatGPT" |
4. Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns / Meta / Unity / Mintegral-type networks) | The parent company's site explicitly names Google, Meta, Unity, and Mintegral as partners, is hiring for UA Marketing, and sells the pitch "validate with UA, then scale." The app integrates Adjust attribution. Installs rise in steps (10-01 to 10-04, 4 days, +290k). Reviews such as "The ad leads you to believe it's something it isn't," "doesn't do what the add said," and "dont ever fall for the adds" show users arrived through ads. It also charted in the UK, UAE, and Australia. Our Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries don't track it (outside our list does not mean it isn't advertising). | Yes (strong indirect evidence; I did not obtain specific creatives) |
| Seasonal product selection: Halloween | The store short description is "Create unique AI halloween art…" and the first selling point is Seasonal & Spooky Themes. The October push landed right before Halloween, and it released 1.11 versions in 10-26. | Yes |
| Long-tail YouTube tutorials in India | There are a few Hindi-language "Lumpix Ai Se Photo Kaise Banaye" tutorials on YouTube, with 3,857 / 1,038 / 434 views each (9-25 to 10-01, via the YouTube Data API). The volume is too small to drive hundreds of thousands of installs. It looks more like follow-on content that appeared after paid acquisition got it going. | Yes, but a very small contribution |
| TikTok / X / Reddit / press | Searching "lumpix" on TikHub returns mostly Lumipix smart calendar / monitor product videos and one account with the same name. x-radar shows 60 posts in 0 days. No media coverage; only auto-generated download-site pages from Softonic / Uptodown / APKPure. | None |
| Store search | The name stuffs in the broad term "AI Photo Generator," and the top 20 on India's Photography chart will also bring in some organic traffic. | guessing |
5. Why it took off
- It is a mature acquisition and ad-monetization pipeline, not a product. The Vietnamese publisher Yuta Labs / MNPFuture has a UA team and access to Google / Meta / Unity / Mintegral resources. It first validated "AI portrait template + ads" with Flixart up to 1M installs, then kept spending on Lumpix with a new account and package name.
- Money comes from ads: no in-app purchases. App open, interstitial, rewarded video, and half-screen banners are stacked (reviews: "Half the screen is an ad and it shows another ad every 3 seconds," "must watch ads for tutorials"). 10 ad network SDKs plus 2 mediation layers compete for fill. As long as ad revenue per user before they uninstall exceeds the cost per install in India and other emerging markets, it can keep spending. Whether users stick around does not matter.
- Timing: After the Gemini Nano Banana portrait craze in 2025, "AI portrait" became a mass search and paid-acquisition category in India, and users were willing to try it. In October, the Halloween theme made the creatives convert well.
- Low cost: Image generation most likely runs on cheap APIs such as ByteDance's Volcano / BytePlus (a Volcengine SDK is detected, not verified). Some reviews say that when applying a template it returned the template image itself instead of the user's photo, which suggests the actual generation volume and cost are kept very low.
6. Differentiation
No differentiation. The features (template portraits, outfit swaps, festive themes, text-to-image), the name, and the screenshot approach are the same as dozens of other "AI Photo Generator" shells on the same chart, even its own sibling Flixart. It only has two things going for it beyond the others: execution in acquisition and monetization, and a seasonal theme-swapping creative cadence. So it succeeded because of distribution, not the product.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. Revenue is not public (only AppGoblin's estimate page). There is no media coverage, and 0 discussion on X and TikTok. But the playbook itself is a public routine of Vietnamese / Indian tool publishers (a Mintegral blog post even describes how Vietnamese publisher XTech used AI-category apps to reach 50M installs), so this niche is not obscure.
- Copycats: no clear original, dozens launched at once: Refoto, Muselab, AI Art Magic, AI Photo Studio: Art Magic, GenFoto, PicsGen, Mistmere… 10-16 Mistmere went live and hit +230k in 7 days.
8. What to borrow
- Swap the theme by season (Halloween → Diwali → Christmas → Valentine's), keep one shell and keep swapping assets and short descriptions to chase search and ads;
- Rotate new package names and new accounts to shed bad reviews and ad fatigue from the old ones;
- Ad revenue caps out at the experience: a 2.4★ rating raises paid acquisition costs and tanks store conversion. For a long-term business, copy Shots / DeePix by adding in-app purchases to chart on Top Grossing, not Lumpix's ad density.
9. Still unclear
- Which ad platforms they spend on, how much, and CPI (none of our three ad libraries track it, and AppGoblin's creative page requires login);
- Whether ad revenue covers paid acquisition: AppGoblin estimates $10K+/month, and at about 30k installs a day, revenue per install is probably just a few cents. The most we can say is that it likely breaks even or makes a small profit on cheap Indian traffic. Not verified;
- User split by country (negative reviews skew English-speaking, but the charting only holds up in Indonesia);
- 5★ reviews include many name-only short reviews ("Santosh Barik ♥️", "Nitish Kumar"), possibly from an in-app prompt asking for ratings. Not verified;
- Whether the Volcengine SDK is actually used for image generation.
