A South African shopkeeper gets a new poster every morning: the company behind Magic Poster AI is an Indian firm with over ₹500M in annual revenue
What it is A chat-style AI poster app for small shop owners: set up your logo and shop name once, then say a sentence and get a promo poster, and it auto-sends you a finished one every day.
Why it blew up India's Primetrace took the playbook Crafto already monetizes at home and moved it to South Africa; in early September it bought about 37k installs in two days, reaching the top five of the South Africa Art & Design free chart. The product itself isn't the main cause: a nearly identical sibling app from the same company got a tenth of the volume.
CHow to play it: don't build a standalone English poster app for paid acquisition. The better bet is to add a "set up your store once, auto-post a new poster every day, share to WhatsApp in one tap" flow into a tool your small-merchant users already have, or build for an emerging market in its local language where nobody is buying ads yet, and fix the things that make competitors annoying: hard-to-edit text and a paywall that blocks too early.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-10 · 11-07 installs 167,055
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
An AI poster app listed less than three months ago, with 167k installs. The developer name reads "P Labs," but scroll to the bottom of the store page and the legal entity is Primetrace in Bangalore, the company that makes Crafto. It hit the top five of the category chart in South Africa and is now falling. Here's what it sells, how the volume was generated, how well it collects money, and what you can take from it and what you can't.
A comment saying "there's a new poster every morning"
In 2026 September 12, a South African user named Brent Williams gave Magic Poster AI five stars on Google Play: "A few sentences and it made professional ads for my coaching business. Every morning it tells me a new poster is ready, and they're all great." The review has 13 "helpful" votes and was still on the first screen of the South Africa store page as of 11-06.
That sentence is basically the whole product: you set up your shop once, and from then on it proactively makes a poster for you every day and pushes it to your phone.
What it is
The store page's first line is blunt: "Magic Poster turns a sentence into a finished promo poster for your business." Usage takes three steps:
- Fill in your logo, shop name, and a one-sentence business description, once;
- Say in plain language what you want to promote today: a weekend discount, a new dish, changed opening hours. Attach a photo if you want it built around a product;
- The poster appears right in the chat window, ready to save to your camera roll or share.
It specifically highlights "no canvas, no layers panel, no design tools to learn," and lists a long roster of target users: cafés, food trucks, barbershops, fitness coaches, repair shops, tutors, real estate agents. The last line: "For shop owners who need to post something today, have no designer on hand, and no time to learn design software."
Compared with editors like Canva or Adobe Express, what it saves is the step of picking templates, editing text, and aligning elements. Compared with older template-poster apps, it adds "remembers who you are" and "sends you one automatically every day."
Who's behind it
The developer name in the store is "P Labs," but the legal entity in the developer info is PRIMETRACE TECHNOLOGIES PRIVATE LIMITED (Bangalore). The support email is [email protected], and the privacy policy is hosted on a kutumbapp page (Google Play store page, 11-06).
Primetrace was formerly Kutumb. Its Crafto app in India does exactly this: makes holiday greetings and promo posters for small businesses and everyday people, in Hindi and other local languages. Crafto has roughly 157M installs on Google Play. The company says it has about 15M monthly active users and about 5M paid subscribers, and Crafto contributes about 80% of company revenue. The founder's framing: they noticed "users were paying local designers to make social posts," so they "productized the graphic designer" (ET Entrepreneur, 2026-03-17). The same article puts annualized revenue at about ₹550 crore and annualized EBITDA at about ₹200 crore.
So Magic Poster isn't a new idea. It's a playbook already collecting money in India, translated into English, turned into a chat format, and tested overseas. The same company has another nearly identical app on Google Play, Business Poster AI (listed Aug 3, with copy that also says "new posters will keep appearing on your home screen"), plus an earlier app with the same name. That's multi-app parallel testing.
Where the volume came from: 37,000 in two days
The install curve makes the source obvious. Cumulative installs were about 13.9k on Aug 31. On Sep 1 and 2 they rose by about 17k and 20k respectively, reaching 51k cumulative by Sep 2 (third-party estimate, AppstoreSpy). From mid-to-late September it ran two to six thousand a day, October one to two thousand a day, and early November five hundred to fifteen hundred a day. On 11-06 it added 587 that day.
Organic word of mouth doesn't produce this shape. It's a concentrated paid push that then decays. Reviewers say so directly: "The ads say it's free, then after a while you have to pay" (9-26, South Africa, 2 stars). The parent company is an experienced advertiser: Google's Ads Transparency Center shows the PrimeTrace account with 348 creatives in total, 322 of them video, and 7 active in the last 117 days, though these point to Crafto and are mainly aimed at India. What name Magic Poster ran under and on which platforms can't be determined from outside.
The spend pushed it onto the South Africa Google Play "Art & Design" free chart: from 10-29 to 11-04 it held #4–#5, dropping to #11-05 and then #11,11-06 by 21. Nearly all of its reviews come from South Africa.
Apart from paid acquisition, it had no other channel. Searching TikTok for "magic poster ai" turns up no relevant videos (11-06), nobody mentioned it on X in 30 days, Reddit only has generic "AI for posters" discussion, and no media outlet has covered the app. The only thing that got press was the parent company's revenue.
Why South Africa
Inference: mostly Android, English works out of the box, small shops rely heavily on WhatsApp and Facebook for promotions, and ads are cheap. The reviewers are the target users: "This makes advertising and marketing so easy" (9-23), "Thank you Magic Poster team, my business is booming" (9-26), "You made me a star among my peers" (10-10, all caps). The South Africa store page shows 11-06 stars with 4.2 ratings and 269 reviews.
How well it collects money
The model is a hard paywall after a free trial. Starting late September, one-star reviews piled up: "Was a good app at first, now it says I have to subscribe and I can't use it, so I deleted it" (9-22), "Now it costs money" (9-26), "Won't open, forces me to subscribe" (9-26), "I don't want to subscribe, the limited free use was fine" (9-28). One user mentioned pricing: "Two weeks ago I paid 99, it said one month, now it won't work and wants me to pay again" (9-30). The South Africa subscription is about R99 a month, roughly $5+ (est.). The store lists in-app purchases at $29.00–$48.99 per item (US store view), and nobody outside can tell exactly how that maps to prices in each country.
Revenue signals are weak. 11-06 It appeared on the Art & Design Top Grossing chart in 15 countries, but always ranked between #132 and #149, and only on that one day. These charts are full-length lists of 200 apps, and the bar is low past rank 130. Inference: revenue is small, and at least for now it doesn't prove the Crafto model works overseas.
Costs are tightening too. 10-10 One two-star review said: "The system-generated posters used to be 4 a day, now it's only 2. There's a daily cap on posters, and I can't reach the developer." 10-27 Another said they get two automatic poster pushes a day, but tapping them shows nothing.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Crafto (same company) | About 157M installs, India | Localized and templated. Magic Poster is the English, chat-style overseas version. |
| Business Poster AI (same company) | About 15k installs, #48 on the same South Africa chart | Nearly the same product, launched later with about a tenth the volume |
| Canva | About 790M installs, #2 on the same South Africa chart | All-in-one editor, you pick templates and edit the canvas yourself |
| Adobe Express | About 164M installs, #1 on the same South Africa chart | Same idea, has AI generation but still an editor |
| Old template apps like AI Poster Maker – Flyer Maker | Each in the millions to tens of millions of installs | Template library route, doesn't remember your shop |
| Brands.live, Kaagaz, SnapX | Mid-500–10M range, India | Same approach as Crafto, hasn't gone global |
| Poster Maker: Design Flyers(SkyRocket Media) | Listed on 10-05, up ~7k in the last 4 days, #42 on the same South Africa chart | New entrant, also gaining traction in South Africa |
| Google Pomelli, image generation in ChatGPT / Gemini | Free | The general capability has existed for a while, but nobody has packaged "set up your shop once on your phone, get a finished product every day" |
The category isn't new and there's no shortage of giants. Magic Poster got in by making "one sentence to finished product" the shortest path in a cheap, empty market, backed by a parent company that buys user acquisition.
The clearest evidence is the sister bundle from the same company: nearly identical product, with Business Poster AI at 15k installs and Magic Poster at 167k. The difference is in the paid-acquisition pacing, not the product.
What you can take, and what you can't
What you can take:
- "Set up the shop once, push one poster a day". This turns a one-off tool into a daily habit, which is what the Brent Williams review praises. For a subscription, that matters more than "how good the output looks."
- Chat instead of an editor. It has the lowest bar for small shop owners who can't design. The most common complaints in reviews are "I typed one word wrong and can't change it" and "it doesn't understand delete." That's exactly where you can beat it.
- Bring a category proven in the home market to a cheaper one. Daily marketing posters for small businesses have already been shown to make money in India. The question is whether they will in other countries.
What you can't take:
- The ad budget, creative team, and multi-bundle testing capacity of a company with over ₹500 million in annualized revenue.
- The templates, festival calendar, and localization know-how Crafto built up over several years.
If it were you
C: worth learning from, but not worth copying step by step. This is a large company's overseas experiment, its volume is bought and already fading, and the weak revenue signal suggests even it hasn't made the business work abroad yet.
Who it suits: people who already have small-shop users or a channel in an emerging market. For example, teams building POS, bookkeeping, food-delivery, or WhatsApp merchant tools who could add "one automatic poster a day" as a feature to lift retention and payments, instead of building a standalone app and buying installs. Or people from a specific country or language (Indonesian, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Arabic) who know how local shops run promotions on WhatsApp.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to build a standalone English AI poster app and grow it from organic store traffic (Canva and Adobe hold the top two spots in this category, and Magic Poster itself has no organic content spread); anyone without ad-buying experience (paid acquisition is its only growth lever); anyone targeting developed markets (Canva and ChatGPT's free tiers cover about 80% of that).
How to build it: chat-based, record the logo, shop name, opening hours, and common products once; proactively push a poster each day tailored to local holidays and the day of the week (Friday pushes the weekend special, Ramadan pushes opening hours), one tap to share to WhatsApp status and Facebook; support local languages; get "edit one word" and "swap the image" right, since that's the biggest pitfall in its reviews. Don't paywall as hard as it does. Nearly all one-star reviews say "suddenly costs money." Give free users one or two posters a week, and sell daily posts and watermark removal to paying users.
How to acquire users: Google UAC and Meta ads in cheap markets, with creatives showing "a small shop owner gets a finished poster in the morning and posts it straight to WhatsApp" as vertical screen recordings. Test in one country with a small budget first, and see whether conversion can support a per-user price of a few dollars a month. (Inference: in these markets the price point is low, so acquisition cost has to be very low too.) A cheaper route is to partner with tools or payment channels that already have lots of small merchants and distribute through them.
Timing: no rush, but move before Primetrace spreads this playbook to more countries. It's currently testing in South Africa using several sister bundles. Once it finds a version that makes money, it will likely push the same approach into Nigeria, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
What would show we got it wrong: (1) Magic Poster or Business Poster AI scales up again in early 2027, and reaches the top 50 and stays there on the Art & Design Top Grossing chart in South Africa or another country. That would mean overseas payments work and the opportunity is bigger than written here, but the competitor is Primetrace itself. (2) It stops updating or gets pulled within a month or two, meaning the test failed and small overseas shops won't pay a monthly fee for this. Then don't build it on its own. (3) Canva or Google launches "set up your brand once on mobile, get a poster automatically every day" on phones. Then this gap is closed.

Why Magic Poster AI (com.magicposter.business.aipostermaker) took off
Bottom line: this isn't an indie hit. It's a test by Indian consumer AI company Primetrace (formerly Kutumb, parent of Crafto AI, 200M downloads, about 5M paid subscriptions), which is taking Crafto's proven "productized graphic designer" playbook overseas under the front developer name "P Labs," focused on South Africa. The launch came from a concentrated paid burst in early September (about 37k installs in two days). Afterward, paid-acquisition momentum and South Africa's category chart kept it going. Daily installs have now fallen from 20k to a few hundred, and its category rank dropped from #5 to #21 within a week. The differentiators (chat-style, one-time store setup, daily auto posters) are Crafto's playbook carried over. The real edge is the parent company's resources and acquisition capability.
1. Basics (data)
- The developer name on the store is "P Labs," but the legal entity on the developer info page is PRIMETRACE TECHNOLOGIES PRIVATE LIMITED (Bengaluru). Contact email is [email protected], support email is [email protected], and the privacy policy is hosted at kutumbapp.notion.site (Google Play listing, scraped 2026-11-06).
- Launched 2026-08-10, version 1.1.3 (updated 2026-09-22), Art & Design category, has in-app purchases, store shows 100K+; exact installs 167,055, +7 over the last 9,549 days (googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06).
- Install curve (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 08-31 only 13.9k; 09-01 and 09-02 each added roughly 17k and 20k, reaching 09-02 total 51k; mid-to-late September 2–6k per day; October about 1–2k per day; early November 500–1,500k per day. A classic "concentrated paid push, then decay" shape.
- Charts: from 10-29 (library data) it appears only on the South Africa Art & Design free chart. From 10-29 to 11-04 it held rank #4–5, then dropped to 11-05, then to 11,11-06, and 21 (googleplay library chart_rank).
- Top Grossing signal is weak: on 11-06 it appeared on the Art & Design Top Grossing chart in 15 countries, but all its ranks clustered at 132–149. Those countries' Top Grossing charts are full-length lists of 200 apps (checked by the library), so the 130–150 rank bar is low. It also appeared on only one day, 11-06, so the "top-grossing in a dozen countries" point in the data card's recall reasons should be discounted.
- Almost all review samples come from South Africa (za). The store shows only 6 ratings (googleplay library review; Play listing).
2. Competitors (who else does the same thing)
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crafto AI (same company) | Android (India) | 2021-10 | 157M installs, +7k over the last 680 days. The company says about 15M monthly active users and about 5M paid subscriptions, contributing about 80% of Primetrace revenue. | Templated festival, greeting, and merchant posters for India and Hindi-speaking users. Magic Poster is a "lean" English, chat-style version for small overseas merchants. |
| Business Poster AI (same company, com.primetrace.businessposter) | Android | 2026-08-03 | 15k installs, #48 on the South Africa A&D free chart | Nearly the same product ("Fresh posters keep showing up on your Home screen"), in-app purchases $19.99–48.99. It only scaled from 10-12, looking like another package run as a parallel test. |
| Magic Poster AI (old package com.magicposter.ai, Primetrace Labs) | Android | Earlier than this package (specific date unverified) | About 10k+ / AppBrain records 39k | An earlier version with the same name, showing the same team runs multiple package tests |
| Canva | Android / iOS / web | 2017(Android) | 790M installs, #2 on the South Africa A&D free chart | All-in-one design tool. You pick templates and edit a canvas. Magic Poster sells "no tool to learn, one sentence makes the image." |
| Adobe Express | Android / iOS / web | 2018 | 164M installs, #1 on the South Africa A&D free chart | Same as above: has AI poster generation but is still an editor |
| AI Poster Maker – Flyer Maker(Taka Group / Maxlabs) | Android | 2019 | 8.88M installs, #19 on the South Africa A&D free chart | Veteran template poster app that added AI. You still have to apply templates yourself. |
| Poster Maker - Flyer maker (Splendid), Flyer, Poster & Graphic Design (Technozer), Poster Maker (ZipoApps), Flyer Maker (DesignWiz) | Android | 2018–2019 | 1,000–24M installs each | Template-library route. Merchants pick templates and fill in text themselves. |
| Brands.live, Kaagaz AI Posters, SnapX (CREDAPP) | Android (India) | 2020–2023 | 500–10M scale | Indian home-grown daily poster app for merchants, same approach as Crafto. No overseas expansion seen. |
| Poster Maker: Design Flyers(SkyRocket Media) | Android | 2026-10-05 | 7,750 installs, +7 over the last 4,035 days, South Africa A&D free chart 42 | New entrant, also gaining traction in South Africa. Whether it's copying this one is unverified. |
| Pomelli(Google Labs + DeepMind) | Web / big-tech features | 2025-10 | Free, no user count seen | Reads a merchant's website to generate a "Business DNA" and then a full set of brand content. Requires a website and leans desktop. Magic Poster only needs a phone, a logo, and a sentence. |
| Design.com AI Poster, PosterMyWall, ChatGPT/Gemini image generation | Web / big companies | — | Big | The general capability already exists, but nobody has packaged "set up your store once on your phone, get finished posts every day." |
Conclusion: the category isn't new and isn't short of giants. It squeezed in because South Africa is Android-heavy, full of small merchants, English-friendly, and cheap to acquire users in. There, "one sentence to a finished product" became the shortest path, backed by the parent company's acquisition capability.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Paid acquisition (highly likely, indirect evidence):
- The install curve jumped about 37k in two days around 09-01/09-02 and then decayed fast. That isn't the shape of organic word of mouth (googleplay library app_day_ext).
- A user review directly mentions ads: "The add posted says free but after awhile thy asks for payment" (2026-09-26, za, 1 stars).
- The parent company is an experienced paid-acquisition operator. Its Google Ads Transparency Center account "PrimeTrace Technologies pvt ltd" has 348 creatives in total, 322 of them video, all linking to Crafto, with 7 currently running over the last 117 days, mainly targeting India (googleads library adv_app / creative, 2026-11-06). Magic Poster itself isn't on our Google/Meta ad library watch list. Ads run under names like "P Labs" not finding them doesn't mean they weren't run.
- Reviews are concentrated in South Africa, a single market spike, which fits the overseas playbook of targeting one country to test ad ROI.
- Store category chart: after climbing to #4–5 on the South Africa Art & Design free chart, it picked up organic momentum from the chart. From 11-05 it fell off the chart, and daily installs dropped to a few hundred (googleplay library).
- Push / auto-generated pull-back: reviews mention "two auto-generated poster pushes a day" and "auto posters used to be 4 a day, now 2." Using the in-app "daily auto poster" to drive retention and return visits is an old Crafto move.
- Content / creators / social: a TikTok search for "magic poster ai" returned no related videos (TikHub, 2026-11-06). X local corpus had 30 posts over 0 days (x-radar). Reddit only has general discussion of AI posters. The Instagram hashtag page is just generic descriptions. No evidence of organic content spread.
- Celebrities / media: the product itself hasn't been covered. The parent company has (₹550 crore ARR, ₹200 crore EBITDA run rate, ET Entrepreneur 2026-03-17, Forbes India, YourStory), and none of that coverage mentions this overseas app.
4. Why it took off
- Demand was validated by the parent company in India: Primetrace's founder said Crafto came from seeing that "people pay local designers to make social posts," and that "we productized the graphic designer." Crafto brings in about 80% of revenue and about 5M paid subscriptions (ET Entrepreneur, 2026-03-17). Magic Poster takes that demand, already proven to pay, into English-speaking overseas markets.
- Picked the right market: South African small merchants rely heavily on WhatsApp and Facebook for promotions. Android dominates, acquisition is cheap, and English works directly. Reviews like "my business is trending" and "This makes advertising and marketing very easy" come from small-merchant users.
- Concentrated paid push to climb the chart: 37k installs in the first two days of early September, plus the ads mentioned in reviews, pushed it into the top 5 of South Africa's category chart and created a stretch of organic traffic.
- Hard paywall after a free trial: several 1–2-star reviews complain "you have to subscribe after using it for a while," "R99 a month," and "can't open it without subscribing." Conversion relies on a strong paywall. Some users also complain about paying and still having to pay again, so the experience is unstable.
5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?
- Product-level difference: no canvas, no template library, pure chat. Enter your logo, store name, and business description once, then each time give a sentence (optionally with a product photo) to get a finished piece. The history stays in the conversation. On top of that, it pushes a poster it has already made for you every day. Compared with Canva, Adobe Express, and veteran template poster apps, it skips the "pick a template, edit text, align" step. That makes it most friendly for small shop owners who can't design and just want to post something today.
- But this difference isn't the main reason it took off. The same company's almost identical package, Business Poster AI, has only 15k installs, and the old package with the same name has only tens of thousands. Same product, ten times the gap. The difference is in ad pacing. It took off mainly on the parent company's playbook + paid acquisition + South Africa as a cheap, underserved market. The product difference only helps the bought traffic convert and keep some of it.
6. How many people have seen it
- The product itself: few people know about it yet. No media, X, TikTok, or Reddit discussion, and no public revenue.
- But the parent company's revenue is public and widely reported (₹550 crore ARR). Industry insiders know the Crafto model makes money. Nobody has matched this overseas front package to it yet.
- Copycats: a SkyRocket Media app, "Poster Maker: Design Flyers" (10-05 installs, +7k in the last 4 days), is on the same South Africa chart. Whether it was deliberately copied is unverified. A more obvious copy is the company's own multi-package lineup (Business Poster AI, old Magic Poster AI).
7. What others can learn
- Validate a known paying need in one country first: take a category already proven at home (daily marketing posters for small merchants), translate it into English, and launch on Android in cheap-acquisition emerging markets (South Africa, Nigeria, the Philippines, etc.).
- Multi-package testing: run the same product under different developer names and package IDs in parallel, then put more money behind whichever has the best ROI.
- "Set up the store once + push finished products every day": turns a one-time tool into a daily habit, which suits a subscription model.
- Chat-style image generation replaces the template editor, lowering the barrier for small shop owners.
8. Still unclear
- Actual paid acquisition channels (Meta / Google UAC / TikTok) and the advertiser entity name: not tracked by our ad libraries, unverified.
- Real paid scale: Top Grossing ranks 130–150, appearing on only one day, so revenue is likely small. In-app purchases show $29–48.99 (US store view), and South African reviews mention R99/month. Pricing details unverified.
- Whether it's been re-spent in other countries after the early September push, and whether Primetrace treats it as a formal overseas product or a one-off test.
- Retention: reviews complain about "won't open", "stopped working", and "still charged after paying", and the free auto-poster quota was cut (4 posters → 2 posters), a sign costs are tightening.
