Squishy toys on your phone: an influencer-marketing firm chased Korea's "왁뿌볼" craze with a digital toy, hit #8 on the chart, then fell back three days later

What it is A phone-based shelf of stress toys: slime, squishies, wax balls, each with its own feel, recorded sounds and vibration, collected by checking in for jelly or buying with money.

Why it blew up Korea's physical 말랑이 / 왁뿌볼 craze this summer, plus harmful-substance news from 8–September, created demand for a "safe, cheap digital version"; 11-01 The chart run came from a 10-29 update's ranking contest (#1 wins lifetime membership) and the team's own skit videos, and it slid back to #101 five days later.

CHow you could follow it Don't clone it in Korea again; copy the model: in the first two to four weeks after the next physical stress-toy craze (or safety scandal) shows up in Taiwan, Japan or Southeast Asia, ship a tactile MVP within three hours, acquire users with sound-driven short-video skits, and collect payment without choking the free tier.

C grade: the model is worth learning, that "when a physical craze turns into a safety scare, build the digital substitute". But it arrived late and was itself a follower: the Korean top spot is taken by 왁뿌볼, and a string of clones came after. Volume is small and fell fast after the event, so copying it now isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

This summer Korea was into a wax-shell burst ball called "왁뿌볼", and then came news about harmful substances. Mallangball (말랑볼) moved those squishies, slime and wax balls onto the phone, each with sound and vibration. It hit #8 on the App Store Korea entertainment chart, but it was a late entrant in this lane, and most of the volume came from a version event. Below: how it got going, why it fell back, and which part of this approach is worth taking.

Someone who pushed a score of 240 chasing the lifetime membership

Oct 29, 말랑볼 shipped v1.0.22, added a "keycap challenge," and the leaderboard's #1 spot gets lifetime membership. That same day, a four-star review on the Korean App Store: "I grinded for the lifetime membership, got to 240 points, which should have put me at #1, but my personal best of 231 still shows #3, and refreshing changed nothing. Ran it again, 240, and a popup said 'score under review,' and my rank still didn't move."

Two days later, Nov 1, 말랑볼 reached #8 on the App Store Korea entertainment free chart and #77 overall. After that it went 11-02 #16, 11-04 #39, 11-06 #101. Google Play lagged: cumulative installs went from 10-31 to 5,484 over 1,874,11-05, and the Korea entertainment free chart dropped from #11-02 to #79 39,11-06.

In one line: a small app pushed up by a version event, riding a craze someone else had already taken.

What it is

A "stress-toy shelf". Open it and you get a row of virtual toys: a stretchy glitter slime, "Starlight Pearl", whose dent slowly springs back under your finger; "Glass Sea", where you tilt the phone to pour sand through and pop bubbles; wax balls you press until they crack, then shatter with a "snap". Each toy has different physics, the sounds are recorded, there's vibration, and it supports iPad and Apple Pencil.

The money works like this: check in daily for "jelly", a reward at 7 days (the new version mentions 19 jelly), trade jelly for toys; if that's too slow, buy jelly packs directly, with Google Play in-app prices from $1.99 to $51.99. No sign-up, ads only show when you choose to watch them, no chat or community, and the site says "kids can use it safely". New toys are added weekly.

It's made by MAYACREW (마야크루) in Seoul, whose core business is "슈퍼멤버스", Korea's largest creator-experience team platform, which claims about 200k creators. This year the company shipped seven or eight consumer mini-apps on iOS: Y2K camera, to-do, sticker diary, four-cut photo booth, film camera… each with only single-digit to dozens of ratings. 말랑볼's 129 ratings are already the most of the lot. It looks like a small team inside the company trying "launch several and see which one gets traction" (inferred).

Where the demand came from: a ₩4,000 disposable toy and a safety scandal

In 2026 summer, Korean MZ and elementary students were into 말랑이 (squishies) and 왁뿌볼. According to a July report, each cost ₩3,500–4,000 and was gone once squished. From Aug 31, Yonhap, KBS and Kyunghyang reported that many 말랑이 / 왁뿌볼 tested positive for the humidifier-disinfectant ingredients MIT/CMIT and excessive boron, with another round from KBS and MBC on Sep 23.

말랑볼's iOS version launched on Sep 5, right in the middle of the panic. The reviews say it best:

  • "No need to worry about KC certification lol, way better value than real 말랑이, I already bought 4" (10-02)
  • "Every time I touched slime or 말랑이 my hands broke out in rashes; with this I don't worry, and I don't have to wash my hands either" (10-20)
  • "At first I thought touching a screen wouldn't feel like anything, but it really feels like squishing 말랑이, even the sound is gooey; I'm grinding jelly like crazy to unlock more" (10-07)

So users were buying "the same satisfaction, but safe, cheap and no clutter". The demand was real, but 말랑볼 wasn't the first to catch it.

Who got there first: a wax ball built by one person in three hours

The pioneer was 「왁뿌볼」, an app by individual developer 김선욱, launched on Jun 16. The author says the MVP took three hours, and within three weeks it reached #1 overall free on the Korea App Store. It now has 133k installs on Google Play, 2,478 ratings on iOS Korea, and 940 in Taiwan. 말랑볼 came more than two months later, at about a twentieth of its volume.

How that volume was pushed

Four things are visible, none of them expensive:

  1. Own-account skit videos. TikTok @mallangball started posting in Oct 12, all scripted voiceover skits: "a friend who borrowed my iPad squished 말랑이 for three hours", "a friend tapping keycaps during exam week", "squishing at work and got caught by the team lead", in Korean, English and Traditional Chinese versions. The top one reached 9,542 views (10-18); most sit in the hundreds to three thousand. The same Reels were posted on Instagram.
  2. Instagram trend accounts seeding it. Several small accounts and trend accounts posted near-identical captions: "꼭 소리를 켜고 보세요 (Turn the sound on!) / 0원 디지털 말랑볼", with single to low double-digit likes. The copy is too uniform to be organic, so this looks like a coordinated push. The parent company already has a creator network, but I couldn't find any evidence of paid placements. 10-24 One comment reads: "Saw it on Ins, had to download it."
  3. In-version events. The 10-29 update: watch an ad for 5 minutes of free play with any toy, a keycap ranking contest that awards lifetime membership, event pop-ups, and boosted check-in rewards. Within two or three days it reached #8 on the entertainment chart.
  4. Keyword stuffing in the title. The Korean name is "말랑볼: 슬라임·말랑이 ASMR", and the website title also includes 왁뿌볼.

No paid acquisition shows up in public Meta, TikTok or Google ad records, but not finding it doesn't mean it didn't happen. No media outlet has written about 말랑볼, and nobody on X has mentioned it.

Once the event ended, its ranking fell from #8 to #39 in three days and to #101 in five. Judging by that fall-off speed, retention probably won't hold the volume after the big event (inferred).

What it got right, and what it got wrong

What it got right: the feel really is finer than the pioneers'. Reviews say "you can tell they iterated a lot", rated 4.3. The "pay per toy + weekly new releases + check-in currency" setup mirrors the real-world habit of buying 말랑이 one at a time, and someone has already collected 14 of them.

What it got wrong: it was late. Most of the craze's demand went to 왁뿌볼, and making something more polished didn't get it to break out. Reviews also show friction in the monetization: "I bought jelly to trade for toys and it still only lets me play 5 minutes a day, that's outrageous" and "give the free tier a bit more". Real revenue isn't visible, and it has never charted on the iOS Top Grossing list.

If it were you

One-line verdict: C. Copying the Korean version is already late. What's worth learning is the model: when a physical toy has a safety problem, build a safe, cheap digital substitute. Next time, move when the craze is just starting, not chase it afterward.

Who it suits: one or two people who can tune touch, sound and vibration finely in a mobile app; ideally someone based in, or familiar with, a market where physical stress toys are trending (Taiwan, Japan, Southeast Asia) and who can spot the next "왁뿌볼" earlier than locals.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build yet another 말랑볼 / 왁뿌볼 in Korea (the top spot is taken and a string of clones followed); anyone aiming at a global slime simulator (that's turf for big paid-acquisition players, with many older products at tens of millions of installs); anyone counting on a single event to chart and treating that as traction.

How to build it: start with a minimal shelf of three to five toys, with feel and sound good enough that people want to screenshot and record them. Borrow 왁뿌볼's three-hour MVP approach and ship first. For monetization, follow 말랑볼's model: check-in currency + unlock individual toys + weekly new releases, but keep the free tier generous, since designs like "even after paying, limited to 5 minutes" draw bad reviews.

How to acquire users: vertical short video, with sound essential: close-ups of squishing, pressing and breaking, paired with skits like "exam week / slacking at work / borrowing a friend's iPad". Post on local TikTok and Instagram yourself, and seed with a few trend accounts. Put the local name for this kind of toy in the store title. A ranking contest with a big prize can push a small app into the top 10 of a category within a few days, which is useful when you want a burst of volume, but don't expect it to keep users.

When to act: Watch for the next physical squishy craze in the news. Going by the 왁뿌볼 timeline, the window is two to four weeks after the craze hits the media; after that, the top players and a wave of clones are already in.

Signs we misread it: ① 말랑볼 stays in the Korea Entertainment chart top 50 or charts Top Grossing even in weeks with no big event, meaning collection-based paid play keeps people longer than we assumed, and late polished entries can still work; ② its Traditional Chinese and Japanese versions chart in the Entertainment top 50 in Taiwan and Japan, meaning the "go to other countries" path is open right now, no need to wait for the next craze; ③ the reverse: if 왁뿌볼's own installs and rating growth also stall fast, then even the leader was just a gust of wind, and this category isn't worth more time.

One line

말랑볼 is one of the consumer apps launched this year by MAYACREW (마야크루), a Seoul influencer marketing company whose product is Supermembers (슈퍼멤버스), Korea's largest creator-experience crew platform. It brings the "말랑이 / 왁뿌볼" (squishy toys, wax-shell burst balls) that were huge in Korea 2026 summer into a digital version. Each toy has its own physics, real recorded sounds, and haptics, and you collect toys through daily check-in jelly rewards and jelly pack purchases. It isn't the category's originator; it's a late follower. The originator was 김선욱's 왁뿌볼, an indie developer app (launched 2026-06-16), which reached #1 on the App Store Korea free overall chart within 3 weeks and now has 133k installs on Play. 말랑볼 launched more than two months later, with 5,484 installs on Play to date and 128 ratings on iOS Korea. The data card's "grew nearly 3x in 7 days" is actually the result of a 10-29 release (adding 5-minute ad-watch trials, a keycap ranking contest with lifetime membership rewards, event pop-ups) combined with short comedic videos posted to TikTok and Instagram from the company's own accounts, which created one burst of growth. 11-01 it reached #8 on the iOS Korea entertainment chart, then slid steadily to #101.

  • MAYACREW: parent company of 슈퍼멤버스 (influencer experience group / influencer marketing SaaS), represented by 오준호, claiming about 200k influencers on the platform and 2,000+ brands [mayacrew.io/recruit; innoforest; Korea University alumni coverage].
  • In 2026, this company launched a batch of consumer apps (iOS, iTunes lookup 2026-11-06): 얼짱캠 2003 (Y2K camera, 07-08), Runn to-do (08-21), 다꾸 sticker diary (08-29), 키라키라 스튜디오 four-panel photo booth (08-02), 말랑볼 (09-05), 롤리즈 film camera (09-28), 슈퍼멤버스 사장님 (11-02). Ratings counts are all between a few and a few dozen, and 말랑볼 (129 ratings) is the highest of them. On Play, the database has 2 apps from this developer with 8,341 installs combined (the other one is 롤리즈). It looks like a small in-house team shipping many small apps and seeing which one gets traction.
  • Product (mallangball.com, store pages):
    • Starlight Pearl (lustrous glitter slime), Glass Sea (tilt the phone to make sand flow), Caramel Pudding / Wax Ball (crack the wax shell), Cat Paw, Cloud, Fruit Jelly, Salmon Roe, etc., with new toys added weekly;
    • Recorded sounds + haptic feedback; supports iPad and Apple Pencil, with iPad heavily promoted;
    • Daily check-ins give jelly, with rewards every 7 days; use jelly to buy toys, or buy jelly packs directly. In-app purchases range $1.99–$51.99 [googleplay library app_snap];
    • No sign-up required; ads only appear when users choose to watch them; no chat or community, and the site stresses it's safe for kids;
    • v1.0.22 (iOS version date 10-29): new home screen, watch one ad for a free 5-minute trial of any toy, check-in rewards raised to 19 jelly over 7 days, keycap challenge and event pop-ups added, Google / Apple account linking [googleplay library recent_changes]. App Store reviews mention the keycap challenge prize: #1 wins "lifetime membership".
  • Launch: Play debuted on 2026-08-24 (charted only in the Korea store); iOS 2026-09-05. The iOS listing is now live in many storefronts (Chinese name "Mallangball 史莱姆・捏捏乐", Traditional Chinese TikTok videos), but charting is only in kr / jp / tw / th / hk / mo [appstore library].

4. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Own skit videos on social (confirmed): TikTok @mallangball started posting around 10-12, with story clips like "my friend borrowed my iPad and squished 말랑이 for three hours", "the friend in exam week tapping keycaps", and "got caught squishing at work", plus English and Traditional Chinese versions. The top video had 9,542 views (10-18), most in the hundreds to three thousand range [TikHub search]. Instagram @mallangball.app posted the same batch of Reels, with dozens of likes [Instagram]. The view timing lines up with the uptick around 10-16 to 10-23, but the scale is small.
  2. Seeded by small accounts and media (confirmed, paid status unverified): Instagram trend accounts including "Piece Of Us 피스오브어스 매거진", "Knewnew Trend 뉴뉴트렌드" and "모찌집" posted recommendations in a uniform "꼭 소리를 켜고 보세요 / 0원 디지털 말랑볼" format, with single-digit to dozens of likes. A personal account also posted an intro with a guide blog link at mz100.dasfl.com saying "(주)마야크루에서 만든…" [Instagram]. The copy is highly uniform, like a coordinated seeding campaign. MAYACREW itself runs influencer experience groups and has a ready influencer network, but no direct evidence was found of using 슈퍼멤버스 to buy ads for its own app.
  3. In-version growth mechanics (confirmed): v1.0.22 added "watch an ad for a 5-minute trial", a "keycap challenge leaderboard, with #1 winning lifetime membership", event pop-ups, and bigger check-in rewards [Play release notes; App Store review 10-29: "grinding to 240 points for lifetime membership"]. iOS hit #8 on the Entertainment chart 11-01, just two to three days after this version shipped.
  4. Store search and trend keywords (confirmed): The Korean name "말랑볼: 슬라임·말랑이 ASMR" stuffs trending search terms 말랑이 and 슬라임 into the title, and the official site title adds 왁뿌볼. The App Store "customers also bought" section places it alongside 왁뿌볼-style apps.
  5. Ads (not found): metaads, tiktokads and googleads all have no record for this product (we only track products on our list, so no hit doesn't mean they aren't running ads).
  6. Press (none): The coverage is all about the physical 왁뿌볼 craze and the 왁뿌볼 app (르데스크 2026-07-06, 한겨레, KB Think, 여성동아 08-25). Not one article covers 말랑볼. Searching "mallangball / 말랑볼" on x-radar returns 0 results.

5. Why it took off (for its scale)

  • Timing: a physical toy craze, plus a safety scandal. In summer 2026, Korean MZ and elementary school kids were hooked on 말랑이 / 왁뿌볼, a one-off at ₩3,500–4,000 (르데스크). From 8-31, 연합, KBS and 京乡 ran a string of reports that many 말랑이 / 왁뿌볼 tested positive for the humidifier disinfectant ingredients MIT/CMIT and excess boron, and KBS / MBC covered it again in 9-23. 말랑볼 9-05 launched on iOS right in the middle of that safety panic. User reviews: "no need to worry about KC certification ㅋㅋ" and "way better value than real 말랑이" [App Store Korea reviews, 10-02]. Its website also sells it as "safe for kids."
  • Better execution than the pioneers: each toy has its own physics, recorded sound effects and tactile feel, with iPad and Pencil support. Reviews praise it: "really soft and nice to touch," "you can tell they iterated a lot." Rating 4.3.
  • The monetization matches collector psychology: weekly new drops, check-in jelly currency, and paying per toy copies the real-world habit of buying 말랑이 one by one. Reviews mention people buying 4 and collecting 14. Real revenue isn't visible, and it has never charted on iOS Top Grossing.
  • Its growth muscle comes from the parent company: a company that does influencer marketing, where seeding small accounts and making skits is their bread and butter, so the push came fast. But the spend visible so far is small.

6. Differentiation

Compared with 왁뿌볼: 말랑볼 is a "better-feeling, cuter toy shelf + collection payments," while 왁뿌볼 is "the earliest, simplest, free with ads." Compared with global slime sims: it leans on Korean local toy culture (말랑이 / 왁뿌볼 / keycaps) and goes with "safe, no sign-up, no community," with no levels and no paid acquisition. That differentiation isn't why it took off: its scale is about a twentieth of 왁뿌볼's. This small surge came mainly from update-driven events and the company's own short videos, and it's already fading. What holds it up is demand from the craze and the safety panic, and the pioneers have already captured most of that.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Awareness: almost nobody knows about it yet. No media has written about it, nobody on X mentions it, and revenue isn't public. The only traces are a few Instagram seeding posts from small accounts and the company's own accounts.
  • Copycats: 말랑볼 is itself a follower. In the same period there were many iOS / Android clones like 왁뿌팝, 머니토이, 말랑왁뿌 and 왁뿌 슬라임. Vietnamese studio HIGAME 10-27 released Squishy Trade: Dumpling Master (Play 57k), copying in the global hyper-casual direction.

8. Takeaways

  • The "physical collectible toy + safety scandal" window: when the physical product has a safety problem, digital substitutes can sell on "safe / free / takes no space."
  • Selling each toy individually + weekly drops + check-in currency suits collection-style stress toys better than pure ad monetization.
  • Big in-version prizes like a competitive leaderboard and lifetime membership can push a small app into the top 10 of a category chart within days, but the buzz doesn't last.
  • Skit-style short video templates (iPad / exam week / slacking at work) are cheap to produce and easy to localize for Taiwan and Japan (it already ships a Traditional Chinese version).

9. Still unclear

  • Real iOS downloads and revenue (iOS is probably the main platform, with far more ratings than Play; no estimates available).
  • Whether the seeding posts were paid through 슈퍼멤버스, and whether there's Meta / TikTok paid acquisition (not tracked in our databases).
  • Retention: rankings fell quickly after 11-01, and daily actives after the event ended are unknown.
  • The Play launch date 08-24 predates iOS, probably a date reset after a closed beta.
