# A "Mangadex" app that can't read manga: the name on Play has changed hands repeatedly, and this latest owner caught the traffic

**What it is** A manga info app that borrows the name of the manga scanlation site MangaDex. It has only charts, descriptions and ratings, can't read chapters, and makes money from ads.

**Why it took off** MangaDex never released an official app, so searching the name on Play turns up only impostors. After an earlier app with the same name was pulled in Sep 13, this one started gaining traction from Sep 18.

**D** **How you could follow** Don't build a name-squatting shell. What you can take away is how to find an empty slot: look for a site or open-source tool with lots of users that has no official store app, and build a non-impersonating, genuinely useful companion app, then get users through its community. Don't count on store search.

Grade D: all the traffic comes from misusing someone else's brand name. The slot has changed hands seven or eight times this year, each owner lasting only weeks to a couple of months, and ad revenue is thin. Honestly named competitors (Calico) can't catch that search traffic. Hardly anyone knows about it

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-24 · 11-07 installs 20,869

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

There's an app called "Mangadex: Manga, Comics" on Google Play, listed in Jul 24, with 20,869 installs by Nov 6. It gained 4,606 in the last week and reached the top 30 of the free manga charts in 20 countries. It can't read manga, and its store page itself says it "doesn't read, host or store any chapters." It gains traction because the real MangaDex never goes on app stores, so this name on Play became an empty slot. Since this summer at least seven or eight apps have taken turns occupying it: one gets pulled, the next catches the traffic. This piece covers what it is, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, and why it's not worth following.

### "This isn't the original at all"

In Jul 23, a user named AnimatingLion gave another Play app with the same name, "Mangadex : Manga & Comics" (developer GoldenDev Studio), one star: "Ridiculous number of ads. You can't tap twice without a full-screen video ad you can't skip." In Aug 29, another user, Menkent lozada, also gave one star: "Don't pretend. This isn't the original at all. Scroll, read or search and you get ten ads. Download the real app from their website."

This app had about 33k installs, 130 ratings averaging 1.26 stars, disappeared from Play in Sep 13, and was listed for 53 days (AppBrain).

Five days later, on Sep 18, the "Mangadex: Manga, Comics" this article is about started gaining traction: it had been getting only thirty or forty installs a day, and from that day on it passed a hundred a day (AppstoreSpy estimate).

### The real owner won't go on the store, so the name became an empty slot

MangaDex is one of the largest English-language manga scanlation and translation aggregators, run by volunteers and funded by donations. It has no app, only a web version that can be added to the home screen as a pseudo-app. A pinned post on its official forum is blunt: "We do not have apps on any app stores (especially Play and the iOS App Store). If you see an app claiming to be official..." (MangaDex forum, 2024-03). In 2025 November, someone asked on the forum whether "MangaDex - Online" on Play was official. The moderator's answer: no.

People who want to read MangaDex seriously on their phones use the open-source reader Mihon (successor to Tachiyomi), Kotatsu, and on iOS Paperback. None of these are on Play. You have to install the APK yourself.

So a group of people search "mangadex" on Play every day, and the real app never appears in the results. Whoever renames their app Mangadex catches that group.

### How many owners this name has had this year

The Play apps using "Mangadex" as their name since June 2026 that I could find (AppBrain, Google Play, 11-06):

| App | Developer | Time listed | Installs | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mangadex App | Wazeeran | 6-19 → 7-13 | 6,600 | Pulled, lasted 25 days |
| Mangadex : Manga & Comics | GoldenDev Studio | July → 9-13 | 33k, 1.26 stars | Pulled, lasted 53 days |
| MangaDex | SUPERB APPS | August → 10-23 | 21k | Pulled, lasted about 2 months |
| Mangadex: Manga & Comics(mangadeksh) | Unknown | Unknown | Unknown | 11-06 can no longer be opened |
| This app | OLEXK APPS STUDIOS | 7-24 to date | 20,869 | Still live |
| Same developer, two x accounts | OLEXK APPS STUDIOS | Unknown | Unknown | 11-06 can no longer be opened |
| Mangadex : Manga & Comics | OakFrameApps | September to now | 5,200 | Still live |
| Mangadex Manga Reader | ETHER-X | July to now | 3,100 | Still live |

Put its install curve next to this table: after it was listed in late July, it had almost no installs for two months, while the GoldenDev app was still up. GoldenDev was pulled in Sep 13, and this one started adding over a hundred a day from Sep 18. Around the time the SUPERB APPS app was pulled on Oct 23, it showed a single-day spike of 1,520 on Oct 21 (AppstoreSpy estimate). Each time a predecessor goes away, it moves up a notch (inference: the timing lines up, but we can't see Play's search rankings). There are also two spikes of 1,300 to 1,600 on October 3, 4 and 8 with no matching removal event. Those days MangaDex's official site had emergency maintenance (r/mangadex, 10-07), and when the site is down some people go looking for an app in the store. That fits, but it's only a timing match.

It has outlasted its predecessors, probably for two reasons. First, it really only shows descriptions, characters and ratings, not chapters. Its store page ends with a paragraph saying "this app does not read, host, stream or download any manga chapters," so it's harder to knock down with copyright complaints than the ones that call themselves readers. Second, it has 0 ratings so far: GoldenDev's app got over a hundred one-star reviews, while this one has no reviews to speak of, so it's less conspicuous (inference).

### Where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from

Apart from brand-name search, I found no other channel. It doesn't show up in the Meta ad library, there are no TikTok creatives for "mangadex app," and no media or X discussion (11-06).

The rest of its exposure comes from the charts, and the bar for those is low. On the same day, the #3 free manga app in the US store had only 36.5k total installs. So at five or six hundred to seven or eight hundred installs a day, it can chart #11 in Brazil, #20 in the Philippines, #24 in the UK and #27 in the US (Google Play charts, 11-06). Charting in many countries is a result of volume, not the cause of the growth.

The only money is ads, no in-app purchases. Its app-ads.txt has only one ad network, BidMachine, with a real ID. The AdMob and Meta lines are still untouched template placeholders, which looks like a batch-cloned shell. At this scale, monthly ad revenue is probably a few dozen to a few hundred dollars (estimate).

The real business sits at the developer level. OLEXK APPS STUDIOS' store-backend address is a centralized mailing address of a registered agent in Casper, Wyoming, and the contact email is gmail. The same account also lists KuuFlix, Movierulz HD, Dramio, DramaBiz, Rotten Tomatoes (2.6 stars), DramaZone, Pocket TV and a string of other movie and short-drama name-squatting shells. On the manga side there are ClariToon, Comix and Tomato Manga (Google Play developer page). Each shell earns a little, and when it dies they switch to the next name.

Manga isn't the only category where this happens. From 6 through September this year, Kotatsu (borrowing an open-source reader's name, 97k installs), MangaFire, VyManga (borrowing a pirate site's name), Ikigai Mangas, Vortex Scans and SushiScan (borrowing a scanlation group's name) all went up in a cluster. Their package names use the same "brand word + random suffix" pattern, and several studios share one GitHub Pages account that hosts the same ad configuration file.

### What it actually offers

Almost nothing. For information, it's worse than MyAnimeList or AniList. For content, legitimate platforms like WEBTOON (194M installs) and MANGA Plus (30.8M) let you read, and it doesn't. For reading MangaDex, open-source readers really do work, and it doesn't. Users who search and find it can't read anything, so they probably leave right away (inference; retention data unavailable). Its only asset is the name, and the name isn't its own.

There's a useful comparison. On Sep 15, a developer named Printstream published "Calico - Reader for Mangadex" on Play: no ads, 2.76 MB, with the name honestly written as "a reader for Mangadex." By Oct 21 it had 280 total installs (AppBrain). It includes Mangadex in its name but doesn't pose as Mangadex, so it can't catch the search traffic.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** Don't follow. Its traffic comes from impersonating someone else's brand name, and this slot has changed hands at least seven or eight times this year. Tenure is measured in weeks and months. If you move in, you're just the next owner.

**Who it's for:** Developers already building manga or anime tools can treat it as a signal: "mangadex" has real search demand on Play, and no real owner is around to claim it year-round.

**Not for:** anyone who wants to copy the name-squatting play. The name isn't yours, so one MangaDex complaint or one bulk cleanup from Google and it's gone. The same-name slot already has at least three rivals queued up. A single shell brings in maybe tens to hundreds of dollars a month in ad revenue, so you'd need a dozen-plus shells running at once, like OLEXK, just to make the numbers work.

**How to do it (if you want to take anything from this):** The legitimate takeaway is how to find open slots. Look for sites or open-source tools that have a big user base but whose official team refuses to ship a store app. Their brand terms are empty slots in the store. The clean approach is a companion app that actually does something useful and doesn't pretend to be the original, like a chapter-update tracker built on MangaDex's public API. But accept what happened to Calico: no name-squatting means the store search traffic won't reach you, so you'll need another channel.

**How to get users:** Don't count on store search. MangaDex users gather on r/mangadex, the official Discord, and the forums, where people ask "is there an app?" every day. A compliant, free, open-source tool is easier to get in front of people there than it is in the store.

**Deadline:** No window worth racing. The brand-name slot will stay open as long as MangaDex stays off the store.

**Signs you're reading this wrong:** (1) This app is still on Play and still growing after March in 2027, meaning the "only a description, no chapters" pitch can keep a name-squatting shell alive for a long time, so this business lasts longer than it looks. (2) MangaDex officially publishes its own app on Play, which closes the slot, and both the squatting shells and companion apps have to be recalculated. (3) Calico, a reader that picked an honest name, reached tens of thousands of installs, showing you can serve this demand without squatting.

Where users come from

- Inference **Store search (brand-term interception)** : the title is literally Mangadex; the official team has clearly said it won't go on the store (r/mangadex, MangaDex forums); no traces of other channels; no search ranking data available

- Inference **Platform events (MangaDex DMCA / maintenance)** : in 2026 a DMCA takedown removed about 7,000 titles and over 25% of chapters, followed by 10-07 emergency maintenance and 10-21 maintenance; the app's install spikes come on 10-03/04, 10-08, and 10-21 (app_day_ext)

- **Verified** **Multi-country category chart exposure** : the COMICS chart bar is low, about 660 installs a day gets it into the top 30 in 20 countries (chart_rank)

- Inference **Paid ads** : Meta ad library app_link 0 match; no creatives for it show up in TikTok search

## Why Mangadex: Manga, Comics (com.mangexcomicbd.manganadcomix) could climb the charts

> Channel: Google Play; developer OLEXK APPS STUDIOS (the store page's "About the developer" lists OLEXK LLC at 5830 E 2nd St Pmb 7000, Casper, WY, a registered-agent mail drop for Wyoming companies, with a gmail contact); published 2026-07-24, and version 1.0.0 has never been updated. Research date 2026-11-06.

### One line

A "manga info shell" that borrows the name of MangaDex (the world's largest scanlation aggregator, **which has officially never released a store app** ): just rankings, descriptions, characters, and ratings. The store page itself says it "does not read, host, or provide any chapters." It has ads and no in-app purchases. It works because it catches the brand search for "mangadex app" on Play, and because the country charts for manga are very easy to enter. The product itself contributes almost nothing.

### 1. Data (source: googleplay library, 2026-11-06)

- Total installs 20,869 (the US store shows "10K+"); +7 over the last 4,606 days, averaging about 660 a day; rating count is empty (nobody has rated it) and reviews can't be retrieved.

- Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimate, `app_day_ext`): 8-22 about 1,300 → 9-17 about 2,400 (30–40 new a day) → from 9-18 on, 100+ a day → **10-03/04 one day 1,332, 10-08 one day 1,638** → 10-21 another spike of 1,520 → November stabilizes at 520–790 a day. In short, almost no one installed it in the first two months after launch, then it suddenly took off in early October.

- Charts: from 10-29 on it appeared daily on the COMICS free charts in 19–20 countries; its best showing was #11 in Brazil (10-29 hit #18 and climbed to #11), #20 in the Philippines, #24 in the UK, #27 in the US, and Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, Poland, and the UAE all landed between #20 and #30.

- **Chart bar comparison** : on the same day, #3 on the US COMICS free chart, Toonhub, had only 36.5k total and +9,717 over 7 days; #6 in Brazil, MyComics, had +35k over 7 days. A few hundred installs a day worldwide is enough to hit the top 30 in 20 countries, so multi-country charting is a result of install volume, not the cause of it, and not some extra push tactic.

### II. Competitors

**1. Similar "borrowed-name info shells / borrowed-name readers" (all launched together in 2026 and 6–September, the ones findable in the library)**

| App | Developer | Launched | Installs (7-day growth) | Name borrowed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kotatsu – Read Manga & Comics | BAV STUDIO | 2026-07-17 | 97,102(+6,300) | Open-source reader Kotatsu |
| VyManga : Read Manga | AWWSTUDIO | 2026-07-04 | 23,931(+530) | Pirate site VyManga |
| **Mangadex: Manga, Comics** | OLEXK | 2026-07-24 | 20,869(+4,606) | MangaDex |
| MangaFire - Read Manga Online | AWWSTUDIO | 2026-07-04 | 20,446(+660) | Pirate site MangaFire |
| Ikigai Mangas / Shinigami ID | AROUNDSTUDIO | 2026-07-13 | 13,963 / 6,941 | Spanish / Indonesian scanlation groups |
| Vortex Scans, CrunchyScan, SushiScan, Mgeko | ASUSEDEVSE / ASESSTUDIO | End of 2026-06 | 2k–5k | Various scanlation groups / sites |
| ClariToon, Comix, Tomato Manga | OLEXK (same developer) | 2026-07-23/24 | 7,408 / 5,618 / 3,705 | Generic term / Tomato family |

These apps all use the same package name pattern: "brand word + random suffix" (`mangakutsmanhwasdfe`, `firenowmanheasheewe`, `manganadcomix`). Privacy pages are on Google Sites, and app-ads.txt is hosted on GitHub Pages. BAV STUDIO and AWWSTUDIO share `bavgolkonda.github.io`, and AROUNDSTUDIO and ASUSEDEVSE share `fatbrandss.github.io` (googleplay library `app.developer_website`). Several studios are running the same template at once. OLEXK uses `manga.vegasbuy.shop`. There is also a same-name app, "Mangadex: Manga & Comics" (com.mangadeksh.reader, which Jina search can still find on the store), that was already 2026-11-06 when checked. OLEXK's own double-x alias (com.mangexcomicbd.manganadcomixx, whose search snapshot describes it as a movie app) has also 404 404.

**2. Legitimate ways to actually read MangaDex** : the official MangaDex website / PWA; the open-source readers Mihon (successor to Tachiyomi), Kotatsu, and Paperback on iOS. None of these are on Play; you install an APK. r/mangadex and several guides from 2026 say it outright: "There is no official Play / App Store app; anything called MangaDex in the app stores is fake" (reddit r/mangadex; privacyforged.com 2026-10-28; prayersflower.com). **3. Official platforms** : WEBTOON (194M), MANGA Plus (30.8M), Manga UP! (8.93M), K MANGA, VIZ; plus newer Chinese-run global readers MangaNest and MangaMuse (2026-06,7 days after launch, +138k / +174k, two orders of magnitude bigger). **4. Info / tracking apps** : MyAnimeList, the AniList client, League of Comic Geeks (219k), CLZ Comics (418k).

Compared to these, it has no feature advantage at all: its info is thinner than MAL or AniList, its content is less than the official platforms, and it can't read chapters. The only thing that sets it apart is its **name** : it holds the word "Mangadex" on Play.

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Brand-term interception (main cause, strong inference)** : the title is literally "Mangadex: Manga, Comics", and the icon and screenshots copy the look of a manga site. MangaDex is one of the largest scanlation sites in the English-speaking world (Wikipedia), and since there is no official store app, a user who searches "mangadex" on Play finds this one. The traffic of similar name-borrowing shells (Kotatsu, MangaFire, VyManga) roughly matches the search interest in the name being borrowed. No search ranking data directly proves this, so it remains an inference.

2. **Timing: MangaDex's own troubles (timing matches, causality unverified)** : in 2026, MangaDex went through a string of DMCA purges (reportedly about 7,000 titles removed and over 25% of chapters), then announced it was "becoming a company" and going compliant (techbloat / umatechnology 2026-08; MangaDex forums; related TikTok @baldanime_ video with 108k views). In 10-07 the site had emergency maintenance, and in 10-21 there was another temporary maintenance (r/mangadex post title). This app's install spikes land right on 10-03/04, 10-08, and 10-21. When the site is unstable and content is being removed, users searching the store for a "MangaDex app" get caught by the squatting shell.

3. **Same-name rival removed** : the other same-name shell, com.mangadeksh.reader, is already 404. With one fewer rival competing for the same term, this app may rank higher in results (removal date unknown).

4. **No ads or content promotion found** : this developer or package name doesn't appear in the Meta ad library; TikTok searches for "mangadex app" return only user-made content and other apps (williamxu963 promotes a different MTL reader), with no creatives for this one. X (x-radar, past 30 days) and media coverage don't mention it either. The store shows 0 ratings, so there's no sign of fake positive reviews.

5. **Monetization** : the store listing says "contains ads" with no in-app purchases. Of the app-ads.txt entries, only BidMachine is actually filled in. The AdMob and Meta lines still hold unreplaced template placeholders (`Publisher_ID` / `Business_ID`), which suggests the shell was mass-produced from a template. A few hundred installs a day, a 0 rating, thin content: ad revenue is estimated at a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a month (unverified). The real play is a matrix. The same account runs KuuFlix, Movierulz HD, Dramio, DramaBiz, Rotten Tomatoes (2.6 stars), DramaZone, Pocket TV and other film/short-drama shells that borrow famous names (Play developer page).

### IV. Why it took off

- MangaDex is a big user base brand that **officially stays off the stores** , and nobody official is serving its Play searches (r/mangadex, multiple 2026 safety guides).

- In 2026, MangaDex got hit with DMCA takedowns, moved to compliance, and went through October maintenance twice, pushing a batch of users to look for alternatives in the store. The traffic spikes line up with these events (app_day_ext 10-03/04, 10-08, 10-21).

- The manga category has a very low bar for the free charts across countries. A few hundred installs a day is enough to land in the top 20 in 30, and chart visibility brings a bit of organic traffic back (chart_rank 2026-10-29→11-06, Brazil 18→11).

- The "info only, no chapters" disclaimer is there to dodge Play's copyright takedowns. The identically named mangadeksh and the owner's double-x alt are gone, but this one is still alive.

### 5. Differentiation

There is no product differentiation. The differentiation is "name + compliance wording": borrow the biggest pirate site's name to capture search traffic, and use the "metadata only" disclaimer to survive Play review a bit longer. That's genuinely why it ran, but anyone can copy it, and a crowd of studios already are (see the competitor table). It has no moat. A trademark complaint from MangaDex or one bulk cleanup from Google and it's gone.

### 6. What to take away

- Look for brands with a large user base that officially refuse the app stores (websites, open-source tools, PWAs). Those are the demand vacuums on Play. The legitimate move is a genuinely useful companion app, such as release-update reminders or a legal MangaDex API client (MangaDex has a public API), not an info shell.

- The multi-country charts in small categories have a low bar. A few hundred installs a day fills them, so they work for testing category demand.

- The window of "platform goes down → users flock to the store for an app" is useful. Monitor outages and takedowns at big sites.

- Risks: borrowing names carries trademark and policy takedown risk, and shells like this typically last only a few months.

### VII. Uncertain

- No direct data on the "mangadex" search ranking or search volume on Play. The causal link between the October rise and MangaDex maintenance / DMCA actions is inferred (timing matches).

- "MangaDex had the largest DMCA ever in October" appears only as a fragment of a reddit post title. The MangaDex forums and the reddit post bodies were blocked by a verification wall, so I didn't read them.

- Revenue and retention are unknown. Volumes for OLEXK's other film shells are not in the database.

- The takedown date and scale of com.mangadeksh.reader are unknown.
