> An ad-buying company moved its iOS-validated app to Android. While Android rivals had stopped spending, it flooded Mexico, Argentina, and the US and Canada with performance ads, then used a rate-then-pay flow to hold its rating at 4.6 and recovered costs with high-priced weekly subscriptions.

# Score first, card next, $10.99 a week: how an AI car-mod app hit 620k Android installs in three and a half months

**What it is** Upload a photo of a car or motorcycle, write how you want it modified, and the AI generates a Android app of the modified-look rendering. There's a 3-day trial, then a weekly subscription.

**Why it took off** A performance-marketing company brought over an app it had already validated on iOS. It launched on Android when rival apps had stopped advertising, ran conversion ads targeting Mexico, Argentina, and the US/Canada, and used a score-first, pay-later flow to push ratings to 4.6 and recoup costs through a high-priced weekly subscription.

**B** **How you could follow** Don't build a second AI car mod. Copy the playbook: find a "one photo, before-and-after" AI tool that already works on iOS, where no serious ad spend has gone into the Android version. Build the Android version, run before-and-after creatives in Latin America, and collect payments in North America. If you want to stay in car modding, build "change only the specified part" and quote-from-shop features.

B grade: the gap of "prove it on iOS, then port to Android" is real, and few people outside have noticed this app. But car modding already has three Vietnamese-team packages chasing it, the product is easy to copy, free AI can substitute for it, and following it means you'll need to buy traffic and absorb Latin American refund and Play policy risk. Few people know about it yet

"ModsTune – AI Car Designer" does one thing you can explain in a sentence: photograph your car, write how you'd like it changed, and the AI renders the modified version. It has no proprietary technology; similar apps have existed on iOS for 2024 years. It reached 620k installs on Google Play in three and a half months and ranked #18 on the US Art & Design top grossing chart. The reason is a performance-marketing company that took the same app it had already made work on iOS, moved it to Android at a moment when rivals had paused their ads, and poured traffic into Mexico and the US. Below: who built it, how it collects money, who it's competing with, and whether you should follow.

### Finish the questionnaire, and the paywall pops up

On Sep 10, a user called KalongCaves wrote on Google Play: "I filled in my preferences one by one, and the app threw a payment page in my face. There's a 3-day free trial, but I'm just curious. I don't want to enter a card for a trial and then remember to cancel within 3 days." 17 people marked it helpful. Five days later, Clayton Ramsey wrote about something else: "It makes you rate it before you've used it, expecting 5 stars. I gave 3 stars first and will change it if it's good."

Mexican users were more direct. Oct 18: "It makes you rate it first, then walks you through the steps, and finally forces you to subscribe." Oct 20: "I never used it once, and I got charged $10.99 for 3 weeks. No refunds, and the five-star reviews are fake." Oct 27: "The ads are misleading. It's no different from any random AI car tool." (Google Play reviews, read 11-06)

That's the app that, as of Nov 6, showed 4.6 stars from 30,437 ratings and 623,946 total installs, up 68,176 from 8 days earlier.

### What it is

Upload a photo of your car or motorcycle and describe the look ("JDM style", "wide body", "retro restomod"), or pick someone else's car as a reference, and the AI renders it. It can change paint, add wraps, rims, body kits, spoilers and lights, and it can blur out license plates and reflections. Category: Art & Design. Listed Jul 23, 2026. Update notes: just one word: "Release!"

It collects money through a hard paywall and a weekly subscription. After installing, you go through the questionnaire, get the rating prompt, then the paywall, with a 3-day trial, after which it bills weekly. Prices mentioned in reviews include 10.99 a week (in euros or dollars), about 11,200 pesos in Argentina, and about 200 pesos in Mexico. The store lists in-app purchases at $9.99–29.99. Typical weekly prices for similar iOS apps are $4.99–9.99, so it sits at the higher end.

### Where the traffic came from: one performance-marketing company, one app already proven

**It's the Android version of an iOS app.** On the App Store there's "Mods: AI Car Designer & Tuning," seller MARKET2I OU, 2025 Nov 22 launch, and its store description is word-for-word the same as ModsTune's ("Transform your vehicle from a single photo / Try new colors, wraps, wheels…"). ModsTune's privacy policy also names the data controller as Market2I, address in Tallinn, Estonia. The iOS version has 1,360 ratings and 4.6 stars in the US store, 675 in Mexico, and has charted top 15 in the Top Grossing charts in Guatemala, Venezuela and El Salvador. In other words, the creatives, quiz and paywall ran on iOS for 8 months before being moved to Android.

**A paid acquisition company is behind it.** On Play it's credited to Mara Apps Development, and the entity behind it is Mara Apps FZC LLC in Ajman, UAE (developer info on the store page, 11-06). Its website mara-apps.org lists its core business as "Mediabuying": working with the biggest ad platforms, tracking through attribution tools, and paying per CPI (per install) and CPA (per paid action). The privacy policy says it uses AppsFlyer, the Meta SDK and Firebase for attribution, and states that there are no third-party ads inside the app, but these tools "help us determine whether external campaigns brought installs and subscriptions." Under the same developer account there are two apps; the other is "LumenX AI: Life Advice," a Human Design app.

**620k installs, barely any noise outside.** Searching "modstune" on TikTok only returns unrelated car-modding videos; on X, not a single post mentioning it in the past 90 days; on YouTube, just one Hindi tutorial with 137 views; and a 2026 roundup of "AI car modding apps" doesn't include it. A volume this large without organic buzz can only be bought. Which channels it spent on (Meta or TikTok) and how much can't be seen from outside. Unverified.

**The ratings are engineered.** 30,437 ratings against 620k installs is a rating rate of about 4.9%; a typical app sits at 0.5–1%. The reviews above already explain why: the rating prompt appears before users have actually used the product. The 150 written reviews in Mexico average only 4.14; most long reviews are 1 stars, yet the store page shows 4.6. A high score in turn lifts store-page conversion, so every paid install dollar works harder.

**The charts are steady.** In Nov 6, it ranked #6 in Art & Design free in Mexico, #13 free and #18 top grossing in the US, #13 top grossing in Canada, and #15 free in Argentina, plus placements in category charts across 23 other countries. Over the surrounding 9 days, US free stayed between #12–14 and top grossing between #18–20 (Google Play charts). Mexico and Argentina supply cheap volume; the US and Canada supply the payments (inferred).

### Demand was already educated by TikTok

"Use AI to modify my car" is not new in Latin America. On TikTok, the CapCut-template account kimberlihayes1 posted a Nov 2 video, "Venom effect: one emblem, one photo of your car, watch it transform," which got 440k views; the same account's October "turn your car into JDM style" template video passed a million views. In April 2025 someone posted a tutorial titled "modificar el coche con IA" with 860k views. Users already know this can be done; an ad showing a before-and-after pair of modified car images gets clicks.

This is also its weakness: CapCut templates are free, ChatGPT and Gemini image editing is free, and those can use your own photo. Reviews saying "just use free AI" have appeared more than once. Some users say the generated car "has nothing to do with the car I uploaded; it just applied its own template."

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (around 11-06) | How it differs from ModsTune |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mods: AI Car Designer & Tuning | iOS | 2025-11 | US store rating 1,360 | The original iOS version from the same company |
| Mody: AI Car Modifications | iOS | 2024-08 | US store 6,260 ratings, up only 20 in a week | Category pioneer, iOS only, past its peak |
| Modyfy: AI Car Designer (Turkey, Papcorns) | iOS | 2026-05 | US store rating 1,470 | New iOS entrant with the same model, not on Android |
| AI Car Designer Modify & Tune (Turkish developer Mobiversite) | Android | 2025-05 | 353k installs, +1.4k in a week | Entered Android a year earlier, now largely not buying |
| RevMod AI – Car Tuning & Design | Android | 2026-04 | 336k installs, +188 in a week | Scaled up once, then stopped |
| Midas / Car Modify / CarDes (same company as Vietnam's Medici) | Android | 2026-09 / 10-26 / 10-27 | 157k (1.3 stars) / 55k / 47k | Started a multi-package matrix in September, swapping ads to refresh; worst reviews |
| 3DTuning, MOTORMIA, etc. | Both platforms / web | 2014– | 3DTuning iOS 41k ratings | 3D configurator, can't use your own car photo |
| CapCut templates, ChatGPT / Gemini | Big-company features | 2025– | Single videos with millions of views | Free, educated demand, and also the ceiling |

(Android figures are public Google Play data; iOS figures are App Store rating counts)

Functionally, it's no different from these. The difference is all in execution. When July came in, the two similar apps with 30 million+ installs on Android had both stopped spending, so paid acquisition was almost entirely its own. It had iOS payback data, so it could bid high and spend big. Now that gap is being filled by the Vietnamese team with three packages; the two new packages they launched at the end of October each brought in about 50k installs in 10 days.

### What it's worth

Not public. #18 in US Art & Design top grossing and #13 in Canada suggest steady payments, but that category has a low bar; our estimate is tens of thousands of dollars a month (inferred, unverified). Retention and renewal rates aren't visible; many Latin American reviews mention "estafa" (scam) and "charged without a subscription," so refunds and Play policy are the ceiling for this playbook.

### If it were you

**Judgment (B):** Copying ModsTune to build a second AI car-modding app isn't worth it; this niche is getting crowded. What's worth learning is the approach: take an AI single-purpose tool that already works on iOS, go to Android where no one in the same niche is seriously buying, and ride the window with high-priced weekly subscriptions plus paid acquisition. The opportunity is real, but it requires that you can run paid campaigns, and the product itself is something anyone can build.

**Who it suits:** small teams that can run Meta / TikTok performance ads and work out CPI and trial-to-paid conversion; people who already have an iOS subscription app and want a second platform; or people who can make generation hold up to "still my car, only the parts I specified changed," using quality as the selling point.

**Who it doesn't suit:** indie devs who don't run ads and hope for organic store traffic; this category has almost no organic reach. Anyone chasing fast money through "rate first, then pay" or "auto-charge a weekly fee after the trial" will run into refunds and bad reviews in Latin America, and Play's policies are tightening too.

**How to do it:** pick one of two paths. First, keep the playbook but change the niche: look at the App Store for AI tools that show a before-and-after from one photo (tattoos, hairstyles, home décor, gardens, pet styling), and find ones with thousands of iOS ratings where the same niche on Play hasn't yet gained 10k a week; build the Android version with a quiz, a 3-day trial and a weekly subscription. Second, stay in car modding but do the two things they've all done badly: keep the model, angle and license plate completely unchanged and only alter the specified parts; after generating, provide wheel sizes and wrap color codes, and connect to local tuning shops for quotes, moving from "just playing" to "people who really plan to modify their car are using it" (inferred).

**How to acquire users:** the ad creative is a before-and-after car image, one original and one modified; the market uses this combination, buying cheap volume in Mexico and Argentina and collecting payments in the US and Canada. For those who don't want to rely entirely on paid acquisition, partner with Latin American TikTok accounts making CapCut car-modding templates; their audience is exactly people who want to see what their own car looks like modified.

**When to get in before it's too late:** the sooner the better. Since this gap opened in July, the Vietnamese company has added 3 similar packages in 6 weeks, and ad slots will keep getting more expensive; every update to ChatGPT or Gemini image editing takes a bit more premium away from single-function apps.

**What would show you're wrong:** ① ModsTune's weekly new installs fall below 20k within 30 days and it drops out of the US top 50 in grossing: that means paid acquisition isn't paying back and this playbook can't hold up on Android; ② a new Midas-family package still has weekly gains above 50k a month later: that means cheap markets still work but the paid slots are already full, so late entrants can only compete on price; ③ Play delists it or restricts its payment flow: that means the "rating first + auto-charge trial" route is blocked, and followers will need to change how they collect money.

Where users come from

- Inferred **paid user acquisition (Meta and similar performance ads)** : the developer's website is mainly a mediabuying business (CPI/CPA, MMP); the privacy policy lists AppsFlyer and the Meta SDK for measuring outside campaigns; a one-star review calls it "publicidad engañosa"; 620k installs but almost no organic buzz on TikTok, X, or reviews. Our ad library doesn't track it, and we haven't seen the creatives directly.

- **Confirmed** **iOS product copied to Android** : the privacy policy's controller is Market2I (Tallinn), which is the publisher of Mods: AI Car Designer & Tuning (2025-11-22) on the App Store under MARKET2I OU. The descriptions are word-for-word identical.

- **Confirmed** **review prompts / rating gate** : ratings are 4.9% of installs (typical is 0.5–1%); a one-star review says "primero te dice que la califiques… y te obligan a suscribirse" (it asks you to rate first, then forces a subscription); rating 4.5 versus an average of 4.14 across 150 Mexican reviews.

- **Confirmed** **store search and category charts** : the title stuffs "AI Car Designer", and the description covers wraps, wheels, body kit, widebody, and similar terms. Free in the US Arts & Design category ranks 12–14; Mexico 6.

- **Confirmed** **TikTok content creating demand (not their own)** : Latin American "modificar el coche con IA" tutorials get 860k views, and a single CapCut car-mod template has 1.12M views; searching modstune turns up no content from the app itself.

## Why ModsTune – AI Car Designer (com.mara.modstune) is working

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: Mara Apps Development (actual data controller Market2I OÜ, Tallinn, Estonia) | Listed 2026-07-23 | Research date 2026-11-06

### One line

A performance-marketing publisher (Mara Apps / Market2I) took its already-proven iOS app, which lets you snap a photo of your car and get AI-generated modding previews (iOS name: Mods: AI Car Designer & Tuning, live since 2025-11), and shipped it unchanged to Android. It's driving users from Meta and AppsFlyer-tracked campaigns into car-loving markets like Mexico, the US, Canada, and Argentina. The paywall hits right after onboarding (about $10.99/week), and review prompts push the rating up to 4.5. The product has no unique technology. It works because **the team already had an iOS unit-economics template that paid back on paid acquisition, and almost nobody was seriously buying ads for this niche on Android** .

### 1. Data

It also sits near the top of the Arts & Design Top Grossing charts in a dozen-plus other stores (hk/sg/in/id/vn/th/ae/tr, etc.), ranked around 23 (probably the same aggregated chart) | googleplay library chart_rank |
| Rank over 9 days | US Free 12–14, US Top Grossing 18–20, Canada Top Grossing 13–17; very stable | chart_rank |

Note: the install count jumps day to day (0, 16.8k, 0, 0, 32k…). That's the rhythm of Play's install counter updates, not real daily fluctuation.

### 2. Who's behind it

- The developer name on the store listing is "Mara Apps Development", contact email aicardesmods@gmail.com, and the privacy policy is hosted at mara-apps.org. Only two apps on Play share this developer name: ModsTune and LumenX AI: Life Advice (Human Design / life advice). Source: Play developer page (read via Jina).

- The mara-apps.org homepage describes the company as **"Mediabuying": partnering with major ad networks, tracking with an MMP, and CPI/CPA payment models** . This is a user-acquisition and publishing team, not a car-community team.

- The privacy policy names the data controller as **Market2I, Lootsa tn 5, 11415 Tallinn** . It uses Adapty for subscriptions and **Firebase, AppsFlyer, and the Meta SDK** for attribution, and states "we don't show third-party ads inside the app, but our attribution tools help us judge whether outside campaigns bring installs and subscriptions." Source: [www.mara-apps.org/privacy-policy-modstune](https://www.mara-apps.org/privacy-policy-modstune)

- On the App Store, **MARKET2I OU** publishes `Mods: AI Car Designer & Tuning` (id 6755485822,2025-11-22, live, version 2.1). Its description matches ModsTune word for word ("Transform your vehicle from a single photo / Try new colors, wraps, wheels… widebody builds"). So **ModsTune is the Android port of this iOS app** , which ran on iOS for 8 months before going to Android.
    - iOS ratings: US 1,359, Mexico 675 (7 days +35), Colombia 95. Best Arts & Design Free rank in Mexico is 13; Top Grossing in Guatemala, Venezuela, and El Salvador 8–14. Also Latin America-focused. Source: appstore library app_profile.

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from ModsTune |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mods: AI Car Designer & Tuning(Market2I) | iOS | 2025-11 | US store 1,359 rating, Mexico store 675 | The original iOS version from the same company and product |
| Mody: AI Car Modifications(Scate) | iOS | 2024-08 | US store 6,260 rating, 7 days +20, past its peak | The category pioneer. It's bigger on iOS and never went to Android. ModsTune is grabbing the Android share it left open. |
| Modyfy: AI Car Designer (Papcorns, Turkey) | iOS | 2026-05 | US store 1,470 | New iOS entrant with the same model |
| AI Car Mods / Car AI / RevReel, etc. | iOS | 2026-04~09 | A few hundred ratings | Small |
| AI Car Designer Modify & Tune (Mobiversite, Turkey) | Android | 2025-05 | 353k installs, only +1.4k in 7 days | Got to Android earlier and has stopped spending. ModsTune's current growth is 50 times its. |
| RevMod AI – Car Tuning & Design(Easterly) | Android | 2026-04 | 336k installs, +188 in 7 days | Mostly stopped after an early acquisition push; price range $2.99–$119.99 |
| Midas: AI Car Modification (Echola AI / Medici, Vietnam) | Android | 2026-09-10 | 157k, 7 days +44k, rating 1.3 | Clear follower. Priced at $9.99–$49.99, with reputation collapsing |
| Car Modify: AI Car Designer / CarDes – AI Car Designer (both under Medici) | Android | 2026-10-26 / 10-27 | 10 days 55k / 47k | One Vietnamese team running a multi-app portfolio with near-identical boilerplate descriptions, copying this category |
| Posely / Car Z / Driftshot | Android/iOS | 2025–2026 | Posely 190k, Car Z 47k | Car "photo/video" apps, not modding previews. Adjacent. |
| MOTORMIA / 3DTuning / ModsNation web apps | Dual platform / web | 2014–2024 | 3DTuning iOS 41k ratings | 3D configurator. You can't use your own car photo. On TikTok, "powerful websites"-style videos often promote the free web versions. |
| CapCut template "transforma tu carro estilo JDM" | Big-company features | 2025– | Latin American TikTok single videos with 380k–1.12M views | Free and produces videos. It has built demand for "use AI to mod my car." |
| ChatGPT / Gemini image editing | Big-company features | 2025– | — | Free and works with your own photos; one-star reviews say it's "no better than free AI" |

Verdict: this category isn't empty. Mody has been on iOS for 2024 years, and a Turkish team built an Android version 2025 years ago. **ModsTune has no feature-level edge** . What sets it apart: (1) it's the only Android app in the category still scaling right now; (2) it's backed by a publisher with iOS payback data; (3) it targets Mexico and Latin America plus the US and Canada.

### 4. Growth tactics

1. **Paid acquisition (high confidence, but no creatives seen directly in the ad library)**
    - The developer's website is primarily a mediabuying business (CPI/CPA). The privacy policy lists AppsFlyer and the Meta SDK, which are used to measure "outside campaigns."
    - One-star review: "publicidad engañosa, es como mandarle a cualquier IA que te edite tu auto" (10-27, Mexico). There are ads, and they promise more than the product delivers.
    - Organic content is almost zero. Searching TikTok for "modstune" returns only unrelated car-mod videos; X has 0 posts; YouTube has one Hindi tutorial with 137 views; review roundups (Starrd's "Best AI Car Customization Apps 2026") don't mention it. 620k installs with no organic buzz means the installs were bought.
    - Our Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries don't show it. It isn't on the adwatch list, and the library only tracks that list. **That doesn't mean it isn't advertising. Still to verify** .

2. **Hard paywall + weekly subscription monetization** : lots of 1-star reviews say "you can't use anything without linking a card / subscribing", "after the 3-day trial I was charged €10.99 a week 3", "11,200 ARS a week". The devs reply uniformly "AI generation needs extra compute, some features require Premium". Classic paid-acquisition subscription template: install → quiz → rating prompt → paywall (weekly + 3-day trial), recovering CPI through trial conversions.

3. **Incentivized good ratings** : rating/install ratio of 4.9%, 5–10× what a typical app gets; a negative review puts it plainly: "primero te dice que la califiques y después te deja hacer el paso a paso y te obligan a suscribirse" — it asks you to rate first, then lets you through the flow and forces a subscription. So the 4.5 score runs higher than the real sentiment in text reviews (the 150 Mexican reviews sampled average 4.14; long reviews are mostly 1 stars). A high score with a high rating count in turn lifts store conversion and search ranking.

4. **Store search / ASO** : the title stacks "AI Car Designer", the description covers modding terms like wraps / wheels / spoilers / body kits / stance / widebody / motorcycle; by landing #13 free in the US in the less competitive Art & Design category, it picks up organic traffic from category charts and search.

5. **Demand pre-warmed by TikTok (timing)** : LatAm TikTok already had plenty of "modificar el coche con IA" tutorials and CapCut filter hits (huugorg's 2025-04 tutorial with 860k views; kimberlihayes1's CapCut "JDM / Hot Wheels style car" template, one clip with 2026-10M and 1.12k views 380). Users already know "I can have AI modify my car", so ad creatives only need to show a before/after to get clicks.

### 5. Why it took off

- **Validate on iOS first, then port to Android** : the same team launched the iOS version 2025-11 and only shipped Android 8 months later, suggesting the creatives, paywall and ROI were already proven on iOS, with Android just a copy-and-scale.

- **Picked the right markets** : Mexico and Argentina have strong car-modding culture, high Android share and cheap CPI; the US and Canada drive revenue (#18 US Top Grossing, #13 Canada Top Grossing).

- **Rivals have quit paid acquisition on Android** : two Turkish apps, Mobiversite's and RevMod's, each with 30 million+ installs, now add only a few hundred to a thousand a week. ModsTune has nearly had this niche's paid acquisition to itself, until Vietnam's Medici started matching it with a bulk account setup in 2026-09.

- **Aggressive pricing** : about $10.99/week, versus the typical $4.99–$9.99/week on iOS; a weekly plan with a short trial lets a small share of converters cover CPI.

- **Rating engineering** : the rating prompt comes early, and a 4.5-star score offsets the "everything costs money" complaints.

### 6. Differentiation

Almost no product differentiation: it's "upload a photo + text description + pick a style → generated image", most likely on top of a general image-editing model (the privacy policy only says "AI processing and generation service providers"). Some users say the output "has nothing to do with the car I uploaded, it just fills a template". The real edge is in **distribution and monetization execution** : a paid-acquisition team with iOS data, a LatAm-plus-North-America market mix, a hard paywall, and rating prompts up front. These explain why it worked, not product differentiation.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Revenue isn't public, and no media or big X accounts have covered it, and review sites haven't picked it up → **few people know about it yet** (only third-party chart sites index it automatically).

- But copycats have started: Vietnam's Medici Technology Group runs 3 packages (Midas 09-10, Car Modify 10-26, CarDes 10-27) fighting for volume at the same price point; Car Modify and CarDes each hit 50k within 10 days of launch. On iOS there are also Modyfy, AI Car Mods, Car AI and others.

### 8. What to borrow

- "Validate on iOS → copy to Android": many iOS AI tools have an empty equivalent niche on Android, so porting them captures a window of upside.

- Pick categories with strong identity-driven hobby communities where one photo produces a visible result (car modding, tattoos, hairstyles, home decor, pets); the creatives naturally show before/after.

- A LatAm paid-acquisition plus North American monetization market mix; low-barrier categories like Art & Design make charting easier.

- Also learn the risks: the hard paywall plus auto-renewal drew "estafa" (scam) reviews in LatAm, and Play policy and refund pressure cap how far this playbook can go.

### 9. Uncertain

- Specific ad channels and creatives (Meta / TikTok / Google, which is primary) and how much was spent — not covered by the ad libraries, unverified.

- Actual revenue: a Top Grossing rank only shows that people pay. Art & Design has a low bar, and #18 US Top Grossing likely means tens of thousands of dollars a month, unverified.

- The relationship between Mara Apps and Market2I (same team, or is Market2I an outsourced publisher?) — not stated on the website.

- Which generation model it runs on and the per-generation cost — unknown.

- Retention: weekly renewal rates aren't visible.
