# 14k installs squeeze into the Korea Top Grossing chart: an AI portrait app with no free tier

**What it is** A phone app where you upload a photo, pick a template, and get AI portraits and short videos. It's built as a Korean version and only sells weekly subscriptions and token packs.

**Why it took off** It doesn't keep free users, so every install pays. It also picked Korea's entertainment Top Grossing chart, which is almost all short dramas and AI chat with very few tool apps, so a small ad budget was enough to get in.

**B** **How you could follow it** Stop chasing Korea. Take the playbook of "zero free tier + one high-paying country + an obscure category's Top Grossing chart" to another country or category. Build templates around local holidays and taste, buy installs on a small budget, and raise spend once the first week pays back.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, it can ship in two to three weeks, and few people know about it yet. But the product has no differentiation. It relies entirely on paid acquisition, Korea already has a bigger twin competitor in Xpic AI, actual revenue isn't visible, and there's platform policy risk. Few people know about it yet

MeraScene is a completely ordinary "upload a photo, get AI portraits and short videos" app, and every competitor offers the same features. It stands out in only two ways: it gives no free credits at all, and it targets only Korea. Those two choices, after just over two months on the store and 14k installs, got it to #49 on the Korea Google Play Entertainment Top Grossing chart. Below: how it did it, who it's competing with, and whether that gap is still open for you.

### #49 and #50

Nov 6, Korea Google Play Entertainment Top Grossing chart. #49 is "MeraScene: AI 동영상·사진 크리에이터" (AI video and photo creator), with 13,728 global installs cumulative. Right next to it at #50 is the short-drama app FreeReels, with 246M installs. The same day it ranked #162 on Korea's overall Top Grossing chart.

Looking back three months: in August 7, ROADONE LIMITED appeared in the Hong Kong Companies Registry's new company list; on August 12, merascene.com's terms of service showed a "last updated" date; on August 24, the app went live on Google Play. From company registration to listing took 17 days.

Install numbers have stayed modest: Sep 19 842 installs, Oct 8 5,053 installs, Oct 26 11,188 installs, Nov 5 13,728 installs, and 7 new installs in the last 2,539 days (Google Play installs). 13 ratings, not a single text review, and the store page shows 4.2 stars. Measured by installs, it's an app nobody noticed. Measured by the grossing chart, it earns more per install than most of its neighbors.

### What it sells

The store page has five screenshots: four photos and one video:

- "AI 포트레이트——추억을 특별한 한 장으로" (AI portraits: turn memories into one special image): a casual mother-daughter photo turned into a studio shot in white outfits and pearl necklaces;

- "AI 헤어스타일" (AI hairstyle): changing hair color;

- "AI 패션——영화 같은 스타일로" (AI fashion: cinematic style);

- "AI 일러스트——나만의 이야기 속 주인공으로" (AI illustration: become the protagonist of your own story);

- The last one is "비디오 템플릿" (video template): a street photo turned into a short black-and-white café clip.

The app is called "AI Video Creator", but the pitch to Korean users is mainly portraits. Templates fall into categories like travel, couples, cinematic, and holidays. Users don't write prompts. They pick a template, upload a photo, and tap "만들기" (create). The generation model isn't named. My guess is it wraps an off-the-shelf image-to-video and image-to-image API. By 2026 H2 those APIs were cheap and good enough, and a 17-day launch fits that.

### Where the money comes from: one sentence, "no free"

The most important line in the Korean store description is:

> 무료 이용이나 무료 체험은 없습니다. ——There is no free use and no free trial.

There are only two paid options: a weekly subscription, and one-time token packs (on Google Play, individual items at $9.99–$99.99). The price page on the official site, merascene.com, says "web and app share the same tokens." The new-user tiers are $9.99 for 2,300 tokens and $29.99 for 8,300 tokens (11-06 web).

Giving no free credits is rare in the AI generation category. Most competitors give a few free generations or a 3-day trial, and freeloaders end up consuming a lot of compute. MeraScene charges upfront and then rebuilds trust with a few promises:

- Failed generations refund tokens automatically;

- Uploaded originals are deleted from the server right after generation, and results are kept for at most 24 hours;

- There's no public community and no discovery feed, so no one can see what you made;

- It's for users 18 and over only, and you may only upload adult photos of yourself or people you have the rights to.

That's the whole secret behind "14k installs, #49 on the grossing chart": it doesn't keep free users, so each person who installs either pays or leaves. How much it earns per day isn't visible from outside. Roughly estimated from its place among Korea's overall Top Grossing ranks 160–190, it's a few hundred to a thousand or two dollars a day (estimate, unverified).

### Why Korea

Pull up the top 60 of Korea's entertainment grossing chart for Nov 6 and it's almost entirely three kinds of apps: short dramas (DramaBox, ReelShort, NetShort...), AI character chat (크랙, 제타, 멜팅...), and video platforms (TVING, Disney+, Coupang Play). Only two apps are AI portrait or image-to-video tools: Xpic AI at #41, and MeraScene at #49.

Korean Play users are willing to pay, and tools are almost absent from the entertainment category, so breaking into the top 49 isn't hard. The #46 fan app 스타투 has only 35k installs, and the #48 스토리엔진 has 28k. MeraScene skipped English and Spanish markets and dozens of crowded paid campaigns. It made the title, description, and screenshots all Korean and went after one country with a less crowded chart.

### Where the users come from: mostly bought

It has almost no organic buzz. Searching merascene on TikTok turns up mostly clips of the DC character Mera. The official account @itsmerascene has 47 followers and 38 videos, with the top one around 900 views. The official Instagram account has 5 followers and posts in Hindi and Bollywood-themed content ("Mera Scene" means "my scene" in Hindi), which doesn't match the Korean market. The reason is unclear. On X it has 90 posts in 0 days, and Korean Naver and media searches find nothing.

The only paid-promotion lead I found: a personal Facebook profile named "Stella merin 0922" posted an ad, "Turn your photos and ideas into AI videos with MeraScene…". Using fake-person profiles to promote Play links is a common move for small apps buying installs. How much was spent, and whether it still runs on Google or Korean local channels, can't be found. The install curve also climbs in steps (about 21 single-day installs in Oct 1,200), with no viral-video spike, which looks more like a small budget bought steadily (inference). Separately, the Korean title "AI 동영상·사진 크리에이터" is pulling store search traffic, and sitting at #130–170 on the free entertainment chart brings in some organic installs too.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Xpic AI (WAGI Tech, Hong Kong) | Live from 2026-08-26, 42k installs, +7k in 11.7 days; #41 on the Korea entertainment grossing chart the day it charted, best #35 | Launched two days later, same Korea focus, same playbook, and it also made the grossing charts in Italy, Japan, Canada, France, the UK, and the US. Its scale is 3× MeraScene's. |
| Zuvia AI (Xiamen Yunyuedong) | Live from 10-14, 118k installs, +7k in 83 days | Updates more often, spends more aggressively on paid acquisition |
| Phant AI / Mivora AI (Shanghai Ziwei), MePic | 8M–12M installs, 18–28 countries | Large-budget players spreading across many countries |
| Shots / Dance AI (Turkey's DeePix) | 1.3M–2.6M installs | Viral mechanics around dance and anime templates, with a free tier |
| Meta AI, Google Gemini / Veo, CapCut | Huge | Free, or they give credits away; MeraScene sells "no learning needed, tap a template and get a video" |

The conclusion is straightforward: functionally, it has nothing that others don't. Its closest rival, Xpic AI, is nearly its twin and is bigger. The gap of "Korea + AI portraits + a hard paywall" is real, but more than one player has already spotted it.

### If it were you

**Worth trying, but don't expect a big business.** What's worth copying is the playbook of "zero free tier + one high-paying country + an obscure category's grossing chart," not this app itself. Korea already has two players in that slot, and getting in now means competing on ad spend. A better move is to take the same playbook to another country and another category.

**Who it suits** : a team of 1–3 people who can integrate model APIs, have run Meta or Google app ads, and can work out cost per install and first-week paying rate. Ideally someone who understands the target country's language and taste and can produce store screenshots and copy that don't read like translations.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone counting on organic reach or content marketing to get traction (this category has no organic buzz, and both MeraScene and Xpic were bought). Anyone aiming for a differentiated product with long-term retention (this is a "template + paywall + paid acquisition" business, and users paying once and leaving is normal). Anyone who can't stomach Google Play policy risk (AI face-swap and portrait apps can be tightened at any time, and a hard paywall invites refunds).

**How to do it** : build a template-based AI portrait / image-to-video app, with templates chosen for the target country's holidays, wedding photos, ID photos, graduation photos, and couple shots. No free credits. Weekly subscription plus token packs, with the entry tier around $10. Put "failed generations refund tokens", "originals deleted on upload", and "no public feed" in the store description. First, go through the top 60 of the target country's entertainment or photography grossing chart and confirm no more than one or two AI portrait apps are there. Japan, Taiwan, German-speaking countries, and Gulf states are worth checking first (inference; I haven't verified those charts one by one).

**How to acquire users** : start with small Meta and Google app-ad budgets. The creative is the store-screenshot style "original → finished image" before-and-after. Test 10–20 creatives per country, and raise spend only on those that pay back in the first week. Write store titles in the local language with plain terms like "AI 사진·동영상" (AI photo and video) to catch search.

**When to move** : an app like this needs two to three weeks from company registration to launch. The window depends on how many similar teams are scanning country grossing charts. Before 2027 January, prove first-week payback in one country and catch demand for holiday portraits (Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day).

**Signs you've got it wrong** : ① MeraScene and Xpic AI both fall out of the top 100 on Korea's entertainment grossing chart within 1–2 months. That would show that not keeping free users still can't cover acquisition costs. ② Four or five copycats show up in the top 100 of Korea's entertainment grossing chart. The gap is full, so don't enter Korea. ③ Google Play tightens policy on AI portrait apps and removes them in bulk. ④ Meta AI or Gemini turns templated portraits into a free feature on phones and pushes it hard. Then nobody buys behind the paywall.

**Monetization structure (key)** : the Korean store description reads "MeraScene은 Google Play를 통해 주간 구독과 일회성 토큰 팩을 제공합니다……무료 이용이나 무료 체험은 없습니다", meaning: only weekly subscriptions and one-time token packs, **no free use and no free trial** ; failed generations auto-refund tokens; Google account login; users must be 18+; no public feed; source photos are deleted after generation and results are kept for at most 24 hours. The Korean store page title and description are fully localized ("MeraScene: AI 동영상·사진 크리에이터"), and the screenshots were made specifically for Korea.

### 2. Competitors

This niche is very crowded: Google Play has dozens of "AI Photo & Video Maker"-type Apps, mostly volume plays by Chinese teams using overseas entities.

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How it differs from MeraScene |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xpic AI: Photo&Video Maker(WAGI Tech Development Co., Limited) | Android | 2026-08-26 | 42k installs, +7k over 11.7 days; best Korea Entertainment Top Grossing #35, overall Top Grossing #118–143; also charted in Entertainment Top Grossing in Italy, Netherlands, Japan, Canada, France, UK, and the US | A near-identical twin in timing, playbook, and Korea focus, but it spans 9+ countries while MeraScene only does Korea |
| Phant AI / Mivora AI (CamSoft AI Magic, Shanghai Ziwei Network) | Android | 2025-06 / 2026-02 | 12M / 8.4M installs, charted in 18 countries | Goes big on paid acquisition across many countries; MeraScene is small and focused, one country only |
| MePic(Ocean Float Mobile) | Android | 2025-09 | 8.59M installs, 28 countries | Same as above |
| Shots / Dance AI (DeePix, Turkey) | Android | 2025-07 / 2026-01 | 2.55M / 1.33M installs | Viral gameplay built on dance and anime templates, with a free tier |
| Dradra / Facefame / Viyo(Jishi Design&Tech HK) | Android | 2026 | 200–4M installs, mainly in India | Same kind of Hong Kong shell portfolio, targeting India |
| Zuvia AI (Xiamen Yunyuedong) | Android | 2026-10-14 | 118k installs, 7 days +83k | Newer, more aggressive paid acquisition |
| HeyGen, Runway official Apps | Android/iOS | 2025-11 / 2026-04 | 2.08M / 2.56M installs | Branded "regulars" positioned for professional creators |
| Korean local players: Kapwing, Flick, Mage's Korean "AI scene generation" web tools, feelmaker, etc. | Web | — | — | Web tools, not mobile template-driven consumer products |
| Big-tech features: Meta AI image-to-video, Google Veo / Gemini, CapCut | Big-company features | 2025–2026 | Huge | Free or credit-based; MeraScene sells the convenience of "no learning curve, tap a template, get a video" |

(Scale and launch dates from googleplay.app_profile / v_chart, 11-06 query)

**Takeaway** : many similar products, and MeraScene has nothing unique in features. Its closest comparable is Xpic AI: launched two days later, also on Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing chart, and bigger than MeraScene.

### 3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

- **Paid acquisition (likely, only indirect evidence found)** : a promo post reading "Turn your photos and ideas into AI videos with MeraScene…" shows up on Facebook from a fake-persona page called "Stella merin 0922" (facebook.com/61594300516461). This matches the pattern described in our metaads library notes: small Apps using fake-persona Pages to run Play-link ads. Neither our metaads nor googleads library has it (it isn't on our tracking list), so ad spend can't be measured. Daily install curves step up in tiers (for example 10-21 on a single day at 1,219) rather than spiking from viral content, which looks more like steady low-budget buying.

- **Organic content is nearly zero** : searching merascene on TikTok mostly returns edits of the DC character "Mera"; the official account @itsmerascene has 47 followers and 38 videos, with the top one around 900 views. Instagram @merasceneofficial has 5 followers and 4 posts, aimed at Hindi / Bollywood audiences ("Mera Scene" means "my scene" in Hindi). X (x-radar, 90 days) has 0 posts. Korean Naver and media searches return nothing.

- **Store search / charts** : the Korean-localized title "AI 동영상·사진 크리에이터" is feeding off store search; it sits at 130–170 on Korea's Entertainment Top Free chart, which brings in a bit of organic traffic.

- **Website** : merascene.com has a web version that "shares the same credits" with the App (the Pricing page says Same credits on web and app). Some web payments are possible, but unverified.

- No evidence found of influencers, media, HN, Product Hunt, or Reddit.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **Hard paywall, every install monetizes** : no free credits, no trial, weekly subscriptions plus credit packs at $9.99–$99.99 per purchase. With only about 14k installs it still reached #162 on Korea's overall Top Grossing, because ARPU is high, no free users are carried, and AI generation costs aren't drained by freeloaders. (Korean store description; chart_rank)

2. **Picked Korea, a "high ARPU, low bar" market** : Korean Play users have strong willingness to pay, the top of the Entertainment grossing chart is mostly short dramas, AI character chat, and OTT, and few AI image-to-video tools compete there, so the bar for #49 was low. Xpic AI reached #35 in the same window, showing this is a repeatable gap. (v_chart kr grossing ENTERTAINMENT 11-06)

3. **Deep localization + scene templates** : Korean title and description, plus guided templates like travel, couples, cinematic, and holidays, so consumers can make videos without writing prompts.

4. **Rode the platform and timing** : by the second half of 2026, image-to-video model APIs like Kling / Veo / Seedance were cheap and good enough that a wrapper with templates could go live within weeks (company incorporated 8-07, launched 8-24, 17 days later).

5. **Most likely steady low-budget paid buying** : promo posts from a fake-persona FB page, stepped install curves, and zero organic buzz.

### 5. Differentiation

Functionally there's **almost no differentiation** : image-to-video, text-to-video, AI photo shoots, templates, every competitor has them. Only two things actually set it apart:

- **A harsher business model** : zero free tier, weekly subscription plus credit packs. Most rivals give a few free generations or a 3-day trial; this one asks for money upfront, then patches trust with "failed generations refunded," "original photo deleted after generation," and "no public feed."

- **A narrower market** : it's only charted in South Korea so far, unlike Phant AI or MePic, which launched across 20+ countries at once.

These two points are why it stands out on the "few installs, high grossing" metric. But they're easy to copy, and Xpic AI is already running the same playbook in the same market, at a bigger scale.

### 6. How visible it is

- Revenue isn't public, and there's no TrustMRR listing or founder revenue posts. No coverage from media, X, or Reddit. Only auto-generated pages from AppInsider, AppWinners, Softonic, and CNET's download site.

- Verdict: **few people know about it yet.** But the "Korea + AI image-to-video + hard paywall" gap is already being filled by Xpic AI, and it's bigger.

### 7. Takeaways

- For AI generation tools: drop the free tier, switch to a weekly subscription plus credit packs, and lower the paywall friction with "refunds on failure" and "privacy deletion" messaging.

- Pick one country with high ARPU and a weak category grossing chart (the Korean Entertainment category), localize deeply, and buy paid acquisition small enough to pay back, instead of spreading across 30 countries.

- A Hong Kong shell company, Google sign-in, and a model API wrapper can go live in two or three weeks to validate the idea.

### 8. Uncertain

- Actual revenue: how much daily income corresponds to ranks #160–190 on the Korean Play overall grossing chart is unverified (rough estimate of a few hundred to a thousand-plus dollars a day, unverified).

- Acquisition: which channels (Meta / Google UAC / Korean ad networks) and how much spend can't be found; the only indirect evidence is a post on a Facebook page with a fake persona.

- The team behind it: is ROADONE part of an app portfolio (only this one app under the entity appears in our database)? Why the Hindi content on Instagram doesn't match the Korean market is unclear.

- Ratings: our database shows 2.6, the store page shows 4.2, the figures conflict.

- How much paid revenue comes from the web version at merascene.com.
